Taxing responsibility
L
ast year at this time, our readers held history in their hands as Toledo Free Press became the first weekly newspaper to publish Lucas County’s delinquent land tax notices, at significant taxpayer savings. This year, we’re doing it again. Inside both this and the Dec. 7 issue of Toledo Free Press, you’ll find a special insert containing the list. The section will also be available online at www.toledofreepress.com in our free digital edition and at publicnoticesohio.com. The county’s delinquent land tax notices are required by law to be published each year by a newspaper of general circulation. “The most important reason why this ad has to occur is to protect property rights,” Lucas County Auditor Anita Lopez told Toledo Free Press earlier this year. “When we’re saying, ‘You’re delinquent to the point where we can take your property,’ this becomes the last call to the public to get in here and pay your taxes.” In October 2011, Gov. John Kasich Thomas F. Pounds signed into law Ohio House Bill 153, which broke the monopoly daily publications held on legal notices purchased with public money. The bill eliminated the limitation that linked charging for newspapers with being permitted to publish legal notices. It opened the legal publication business to any newspaper of general circulation that publishes at least once a week and meets other criteria, including containing at least 25 percent editorial content, being published continuously for at least three years and the ability to add subscribers to its distribution list, all of which Toledo Free Press satisfies. The bill also requires a participating newspaper to offer its best classified rate. Allowing newspapers such as Toledo Free Press to publish these notices is intended to ensure that the best rate offered by any participant in this market will be competitive. The result has been substantial savings for all who are required to publish legal notices. A number of agencies have begun taking advantage of our lower rates to reach Lucas County taxpayers, including the Village of Ottawa Hills, City of Toledo, City of Sylvania, Monclova Township, Lucas County Metropolitan Housing Authority, Toledo Public Schools, Metroparks of Toledo Area and Washtenaw County. During a special meeting Nov. 19, the Lucas County Commissioners voted to award this year’s contract for publishing the delinquent land tax notices to Toledo Free Press after the Auditor’s Office reviewed submitted bids and recommended Toledo Free Press’ as the “lowest and best.” We are pleased to print and distribute this list for the second year, at significant savings for Lucas County taxpayers. We are proud that the county chose us for this important task and are confident we will do a great job, as we did last year. O Tom Pounds is president and publisher of Toledo Free Press. Maybe Mr. Frat Guy unloads his cart with the speed of Barry Allen. Maybe the sweet little old lady has finally gotten a debit card. But no matter what, my choice is wrong. I could switch lanes, conceivably, but the faster lane — the lane I didn’t choose — is already filling up with new shoppers who have learned from my mistake. For more information, visit BeaSantatoaSenior. com or call (419) 472-8181. As we enjoy the sparkle of the season, let’s also remember those around us who might not have those holiday joys as well as the hardworking organizations who support them. O
The Toledo Community Foundation is offering matching grants for registered charities, with donated money going directly to the organizations. At press time, more than 180 local organizations were on the list, which can be found online at toledocf.org. What an amazing opportunity to transform the pressure to spend into something that will have a much more lasting impact. (Read more on page 8.) This is also the time of year when holiday gift drive donation boxes pop up for a variety of excellent causes. Lucas County Children Services is in the midst of its eighth annual drive. The agency is hoping to collect enough gifts to make sure 2,500 local children who are victims of abuse and
neglect will have a happy holiday. New, unwrapped gifts can be dropped off at 52 area locations through Dec. 17. People can also text BESTGIFT to 41911 to make an instant donation to the drive. (Read more on page 6; Toledo Free Press is a media sponsor of the drive.) Kids aren’t the only ones who might not have a merry Christmas this year. There are also gift drives planned for local seniors who might not get a visit from family or a single wrapped package of their own this year, including Be a Santa to a Senior, sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care. “It is heartbreaking to think of the senior members of our community spending the holidays all by themselves, without any gifts or any way to

As Black Friday approaches, the holiday shopping season is getting serious. But a local agency hopes shoppers also give serious thought to helping out Northwest Ohio youth who may not have so many presents under the tree. Lucas County Children Services (LCCS) is in the midst of its eighth annual Holiday Gift Drive, which will provide presents for 2,500 children who are victims of abuse and neglect. The drive benefits children living in foster homes and those living with relatives while their parents receive LCCS services as well as children still living at home with parents in the LCCS system. “They’re facing more than one adverse factor in their life,” said Clare Armbruster, president of Friends of LCCS, a nonprofit organization that supports LCCS. “We like to think if they get a few presents, they feel like at least someone cares about them and makes their holidays a little brighter.” Friends of LCCS volunteers are responsible for collecting new, unwrapped toys dropped off in boxes stationed at 52 businesses throughout the Toledo area. They will also help wrap the thousands of gifts. Those unsure of what to buy a child should remember four things, Armbruster said: Disney’s “Frozen” toys, Legos, action figures and gift cards, the last being the most desired gifts for teenagers. “We’re finding there will be a huge demand for ‘Frozen’ merchandise this year,” she said. “We’ve even been going out trying to buy some of it already because it’s really been disappearing. If someone is standing around the store with no idea what to buy ... I’d recommend that.” The drive received a major boost recently when Trans-Siberian Orchestra donated $11,023 to the holiday campaign. The band donated $1 from each ticket sold during their recent two-show appearance
at the Huntington Center to the gift drive. “It was a huge surprise to be selected because there are a lot of children’s charities, but I think it was a natural tie-in because their show is all about Christmas and this money was designated for the gift drive,” Armbruster said. Even with the large cash donation, Friends of LCCS still has plenty of work to do, with thousands of children to provide presents for. Students at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns have already been helping out with the drive, gathering toys and giftcard donations. Other community partners are Toledo Free Press, WTOL-11, Bennett Management Corp. and 101.5 The River. “We are a community-oriented company, and to be able to be a part of a successful program such as the [LCCS gift drive] is worth more than words can express,” said Beverly Benner, vice president of administration and marketing for Bennett Management, which owns and operates all Burger King restaurants in the Toledo area. “We invite the public to stop by any local BK and to drop off a toy or two,” Benner said. “Our Burger King restaurants will also be accepting monetary donations from the day after Thanksgiving through Sunday, Dec. 14.” WTOL-11 news anchor Emilie Voss said it’s gratifying to watch the community step up and support the drive each year. “These kids in our community deserve to have a special Christmas,” Voss said. “For me, I love knowing these kids are going back to school and can talk about their new toys just like their friends.” Voss’ co-anchor Jerry Anderson agreed. “I love that this toy drive puts smiles on the faces of kids who may not have had a lot of reason to smile in their young lives,” Anderson said. “Yet, while I know that happens, I don’t get to see it. What I do get to see is the generosity of all of those folks who drop off toys.” n KIDS CONTINUES ON 7

After the long shopping weekend that follows Thanksgiving — Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday — local organizations hope area residents will set aside some money to donate to local organizations during Giving Tuesday. The national Giving Tuesday campaign, set for Dec. 2, aims to create a day of giving and “raising funds and awareness for important causes everywhere,” according to givingtuesday.org. The campaign was started in New York two years ago by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation. Since then, community foundations across the country have gotten involved. The Toledo Community Foundation is planning an initiative offering a matching grant for charities that register locally. “We think it’s a win-win,” said Keith Burwell, president of Toledo Community Foundation. “It fits our mission of promoting philanthropy in the community.” Burwell said the donated money
goes directly to the organizations. “This is not a fundraising campaign for the foundation in any way; it’s directly for the organizations in our community,” he said. Steps and guidelines for local organizations wanting to participate in the campaign are detailed on toledocf.org. “We start with Thanksgiving. We go to Black Friday, we’re told to spend, spend, spend. We go to Small Business Saturday, we’re told to spend, spend, spend. We go to Cyber Monday, we’re told to spend, spend, spend,” Burwell said. “We think it’s a great idea, on a Tuesday, to go right back where we started to give a little thanks and give back.” Food for Thought is among the many local organizations participating. The Downtown-based nonprofit is looking to purchase a box truck with funds raised on Giving Tuesday. The organization currently loads their items by hand and is looking for a more efficient way. A used box truck with liftgate would cost around $8,000, said Jill Bunge, interim executive director at Food for Thought. n GIVING CONTINUES ON 9

n GIVING CONTINUED FROM 8 “It’s a tangible item that we can source at a reasonable cost and it will allow us to do our food pickups much easier,” Bunge said. “It’s something that, as we’re looking to increase service, would be such a huge help and save the backs of our drivers.” Bunge added that she has been in talks with other people in the area who would benefit from using the truck as well. Bunge said Giving Tuesday offers a great way to kick off the giving season by supporting a local organization that provides “a gateway between poverty and prosperity” by serving meals to people in need. “It’s more than just the food. We try to engage folks [and] have a conversation,” she said.

The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio is promoting the gift of girl power. Funds raised on Giving Tuesday will provide financial aid for the organization. The Girl Scouts have a policy of not turning away anyone who wants to join the organization and fi-
nancial aid helps make that possible. Funds will also support volunteers and outreach efforts. “Giving Tuesday is just a way to celebrate giving and celebrate how philanthropy can change the world,” said Major Gifts Manager Erin McPartland. “That’s at the heart of what we do … we’re building future philanthropic leaders.” The Girl Scouts are encouraging supporters to share why they donated on social media networks using #GiveGirlPower.
Lupus Foundation
The Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Ohio Chapter is also involved in Giving Tuesday. The group works to educate people about lupus and give support to those with the disease. A local group meets at the Washington branch of the Toledo Public Library from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every fourth Saturday of the month. This group will benefit from the funds as well. “It’s really important for people to keep in mind that there are a lot of nonprofits out there,” said Marnie Burke, vice president of programs and patient services.
Bittersweet Farms
Whitehouse-based Bittersweet Farms will also be involved for the second year in a row. The organization is looking to fund its growing horticulture program, which “enables individuals with autism to learn valuable work skills and benefit financially from the sale of Bittersweet’s natural and nutritious products,” according to a news release. Bittersweet’s board of directors will match the first $1,500 donated. The organization is also in need of gardening tools.

Toledoans will soon have the opportunity to help fight HIV and AIDS just by eating out. A Reason to Dine will see three local restaurants donate part of their proceeds to help fund HIV and AIDS-related services and prevention programs in Toledo on World AIDS Day. On Dec. 1, part of the bill for customers who dine at Pam’s Corner, 116 10th St.; Briarfield Cafe, 3220 Briarfield Blvd., Maumee; or Ferdos Mediterranean Restaurant, 3065 W. Bancroft St., will go directly to local services for the community. Those services include free HIV testing, advocacy programs, and educational and preventative programs for teens and adults. The annual fundraiser is hosted by the AIDS Resource Center (ARC) of Ohio, a nonprofit that provides local support to people living with HIV and AIDS. Special Events Director Lisa Grigsby said the event helps bring a more focused awareness to a global issue. “We need to have conversations in our community about [HIV/AIDS], and
what better way to have a conversation than over a meal?” she said. “This our step out into Toledo to say, ‘Hey, we need to have more people aware, we need to bring new friends to the organization, and have people talking about this.” This year will be the first time A Reason to Dine is held in Toledo after originating in Columbus six years ago. The annual fundraiser garnered $6,000 last year and typically hosts about 15 restaurants in Columbus, Grigsby said. Grigsby said she hopes to eventually replicate that success in Toledo, adding that the restaurants also benefit from the event. “We’ll have dining ambassadors, which means some of our staff and supporters will work on bringing groups out to have a meal at one of those restaurants involved so that the restaurants get to see some business from it,” she said. “It’s a fundraiser as well as a friendraiser.” Grigsby said the nonprofit makes a point to recruit local restaurants so that every dollar stays in the community. The restaurants also get to choose what percentage of their profits they want to donate. Pam’s Corner is donating 25 percent and Briarfield Cafe and Ferdos are donating 10 percent,

according to the event’s website. Pam Weirauch, owner of Pam’s Corner, said she was excited to sign up after a loyal customer and friend told her about the event. “A lot of people approach me to do things like this, and as a small business owner I really have to pick and choose. It has to be something I’m personally aligned with,” she said. “We’re thrilled to be a part of it, especially since it’s the
event’s first year in Toledo.” Grigsby said ARC Ohio always planned to bring the event to Toledo. According to the Ohio Department of Health, Lucas County has the fifth highest rate of HIV-positive cases in the state with almost 900 people diagnosed as of 2013. Grigsby said preventive education is extremely important because the perception of HIV and AIDS has changed.
“Back in the ’80s, if somebody had AIDS it was a death sentence. The good news is that we’ve made so much progress in the medications that are available that if we can test and diagnose somebody and get them into care right away, their life expectancy will be near normal now. You don’t see people dying of AIDS — for the most part in America — because we have the ability to help them. “Unfortunately, what we are still seeing are new infections, and half of those infections are in 13- to 24-yearolds. So what we’re now realizing is there’s a whole new generation who never remember AIDS as a fatal disease because in their lifetime it hasn’t been. It’s not at the top of the mind anymore.” To that end, Grigsby said ARC Ohio focuses on prevention and also assists with all aspects of treatment, like assigning those with HIV a social worker, finding them housing or getting them proper medical coverage. “If we test somebody, we will hold their hand through any of the processes they need to make sure they are getting the appropriate care,” Grigsby said. SHOP LOCAL
Area retailers offer myriad opportunities to support small businesses. By Danielle Stanton Toledo Free Press News Editor dstanton@toledofreepress.com
’Tis the season when consumers are faced with a shopping quandry: Where should one spend hard-earned dollars on holiday gifts? More and more people are opting to plunk down their bucks on locally made products and, to that end, Toledo certainly doesn’t disappoint. Handmade Toledo, a community of regional artisans, now has a brick-andmortar home at 1717 Adams St. Among the vendors at its re-
cent holiday Maker’s Mart was Jupmode, a Perrysburg-based specialty T-shirt company featuring locally themed slogans. “When you shop at local companies, the money stays in the area,” owner John Amato said. “It’s all a bunch of local people who put time into something they care about. For us, customer service is a really big thing. It’s important for us to take care of the people who are willing to buy our product.” Jupmode just got approval from the Toledo Zoo to remake the zoo’s iconic 1988 panda shirt. The new shirt is available for $20 and is anticipated to be
Amato’s biggest holiday seller. He’s also excited about the company’s other new item, socks with the Toledo skyline. Jupmode items will be on sale for Black Friday and on Dec. 17 to honor the anniversary of the slogan, “You Will Do Better in Toledo,” which is featured on Amato’s best-selling shirt. “When people order shirts from us, we’re able to create more fun things,” Amato said. “It’s important to understand that relationship; if you want that local supply, you have to support them.” Jules Webster, owner of The Art Supply Depō, 29 S. St. Clair St., said she competes with the big box stores during
the holidays as well as the Internet — which she considers her biggest competitor — by offering unique items for a “surprisingly” cheaper price. “We do provide a high level of customer service, so people come back,” Webster said. “They trust our advice and we ask questions [about] the recipient, and we put together a gift pack that they can’t find anywhere else.” On Black Friday, Webster will offer 25 percent off on her paint and drawing sets. They also offer a holiday snack assortment for $28.99. For an iconic Toledo item, try the Tony Packo’s basket, $61.99. Libbey Glass recently opened two seasonal pop-up stores, one at Franklin Park Mall in the space once occupied by Coldwater Creek, and one at Levis Commons next door to Jos. A. Bank Clothiers. A Toledo tradition since 2005
Menzel, Rucker among artists with holiday albums By Alan Sculley
Special to Toledo Free Press
In many years, when November arrives, it’s time to brace for the onslaught of Christmas albums. Often, the selection is filled with the usual by-the-numbers versions of holiday standards that add nothing to the hundreds of holiday albums that have come before them. This year, we get a break. Sure, there are a few predictable releases, but just as many boast some inspired and original approaches to Christmas music. Here are some releases to add — and delete — from your holiday album shopping list: O Taj Mahal/The Blind Boys of Alabama, “Talkin’ Christmas!” (Sony Masterworks): This holiday summit between blues legend Mahal and the equally venerable gospel/soul vocal group, The Blind Boys of Alabama, is a rousing success. Featuring several fine original songs and inspired and unique versions of a few holiday favorites, “Talkin’ Christmas!” rates as 2014’s best holiday album. O Earth, Wind & Fire, “Holiday” (Sony Legacy): The veteran group does exactly what one would hope with a holiday album — remakes a set of Christmas classics in its own rousing horn-laced R&B image, while rounding out things with a few spirited originals. O Farmer Jason, “Christmas on the Farm” (Courageous Chicken): Jason Ringenberg (of Jason & The Scorchers fame) adapts his kids-music
IDINA MENZEL persona for this collection of originals and standards. Ringenberg keeps things fun and clean for the kids, but rocks enough and shows enough cleverness that grown-ups will also get some kicks out of “Christmas on the Farm.” O Heart & Friends, “Home For The Holidays” (Frontiers): For the December 2013 concert captured on this CD/DVD, Heart played a warm and inviting set of holidayrelated songs written by the likes of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Harry Nilsson. Heart also rocks out on “Barracuda,” “Even It Up” and a cover of “Stairway To Heaven.” Then Train’s Pat Monahan, Richard Marx and Shawn Colvin join in on Dylan’s “Ring Them Bells,” a stirring finale for a fine — and unique — holiday show. O Over The Rhine, “Blood Oranges in the Snow” (GSD): This isn’t a holiday album per se. It’s a collection
DARIUS RUCKER
THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA AND TAJ MAHAL of mostly original songs set to a backdrop of the holiday season. Not exactly cheery, these are mostly tales of everyday struggles, small joys and wishes for better days ahead, housed within Over The Rhine’s familiar elegant folkpop sound. O The Roys, “Bluegrass Kinda Christmas” (Rural Rhythm): There’s nothing “kinda” here. The Roys have made a true bluegrass Christmas album that happily leans toward lively lesser-known tunes (“Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy,” “Christmas Time’s Comin’”) plus several solid originals. O Home Free: “Full of Cheer” (Columbia): Winners of NBC’s “The Sing-Off,” this a cappella group sounds like a cross between the Oak Ridge Boys and Straight No Chaser — with some comedy thrown in (note the title track, a rare happy Christmas breakup song). The vocal arrangements are fun and
frequently inventive, making for an entertaining album that lives up to its title. O Dave Koz & Friends, “The 25th of December” (Concord): The smooth jazz star’s latest holiday effort is a starstudded vocal-oriented affair. Johnny Mathis, India.Arie, Jonathan Butler and Heather Headley are among the guests who give inspired performances and add some sizzle to a nice mix of traditional classics and newer holiday songs. O Jim Brickman, “On A Winter’s Night” (Green Hill): This is Brickman’s eighth holiday album, but he sounds invested in the season. He sets the famous poem “Night Before Christmas” to music (with John Oates nicely handling the vocals) and creatively reinvents “Blue Christmas” and the Mariah Carey hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You” in his signature gentle piano sound. O Darius Rucker, “Home For The Holidays” (Capitol Nashville): The Setting a Higher Standard of
Hootie & the Blowfish singer, who has gone country as a solo artist, plays it safe here, performing agreeable, if predictable, versions of standards like “Let It Snow,” “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” O Idina Menzel, “Holiday Wishes” (Warner Bros.): The Broadway/film star’s holiday effort is heavy on the usual standards given familiar orchestrated treatments. Menzel’s voice is amazing, but she over-sings her way through most of the songs. O Various Artists, “Christmas At Downton Abbey” (Warner Bros.): There’s no reason this double album exists except to sell it to fans of the BBC series. Mostly, it’s some actors singing (some competently, some not that well — with the choir frequently carrying the performances) songs that have nothing to do with the fine television series. O

Soundtrack collection features the best of Mancini By James A. Molnar
Toledo Free Press Film Editor jmolnar@toledofreepress.com
What is the Pink Panther without his theme music? The two go hand in hand. The slick saxophone melody creates the perfect vibe for the eponymous, rose-colored cartoon character that opened the 1963 movie of the same name. This jazzy theme music is just one of the many iconic scores written by legendary composer Henry Mancini (1924-94) and captured on the new soundtrack collection by Legacy Recordings. A perfect gift for film fans, “The Classic Soundtrack Collection” of Mancini’s oeuvre boasts 18 soundtracks on nine discs, along with a never-before-heard version of “Nothing to Lose” with Julie Andrews from the 1968 comedy “The Party.” Frequenters of Friday night football games may recognize another iconic Mancini score in the collection — the television theme song from “Peter Gunn.” This high school band favorite won Mancini an Emmy Award and two Grammys. This theme was adapted for the film version of the show and is featured in the collection. Two years after winning those Emmy and Grammy awards, Mancini earned his first two
Academy Awards for his work on “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” which is also featured in the collection. Mancini won Best Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture for his work in the classic film starring Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly. He also won for the timeless “Moon River” with lyricist Johnny Mercer. The collection would be worth having just for those soundtracks, but it also works as an educational tool. Playing each of the nine discs, listeners may find quite a few themes they hadn’t realized were written by Mancini. Listeners may ask themselves, “He did this?!” after listening to another recognizable theme from Mancini — “Baby Elephant Walk” from Howard Hawks’ 1962 film “Hatari!” starring John Wayne. This catchy piece of music features a fun combination of woodwind and brass instruments, along with some supporting blasts from a tuba. It would be almost impossible to include every piece of music by Mancini because he wrote so much. This collection, though, is a great tribute to the legacy of the late composer, born in Cleveland and raised near Pittsburgh. O

Estar Cohen Project to celebrate debut album ‘Waiting for Dawn’ Dec. 5 Local jazz prodigy Estar Cohen is a young woman who is serious about her art and analytical about how it works, but also passionate and joyful about doing what she loves. Estar Cohen Project released its first CD, “Waiting for Dawn,” earlier this year. A release party for the album will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Toledo Museum of Art, featuring a live performance by the group. The band has performed together
for over two years. Cohen, who is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music at the University of Toledo, has spent a lifetime around music. Growing up in Sylvania as part of a family of passionate musicians (her siblings are also dedicated performers), Cohen had plenty of

inspiration to follow in their footsteps. “It wasn’t until a little bit later that I discovered jazz. It wasn’t until I was maybe a sophomore or junior in high school that a friend took me out to Murphy’s [Place], and that’s where I fell in love with the music,” she said. As she fell COHEN in love with the form, Cohen was taken under the wing of musicians like Tad Weed, whose influence she speaks of with warm regard. “Sometimes people don’t realize all the opportunities that are out there, or things that you can create to get your music performed, or to do them yourself,” she said. The album is a kind of snapshot of
who Cohen is as an artist at this stage of her growth — and how far the band that bears her name has come. “When we decided that we wanted to record, we were really thinking of documenting this time in our lives, our lives as musicians. And we had been working through these songs, these pieces, through gigs,” Cohen said. “We wanted it to feel kind of diverse. I feel that we covered some different ground from song to song.” The fact that the band is always growing and evolving — much like jazz itself — means they are in a different place now than when “Waiting for Dawn” was recorded. “We recorded the album in March, and I think it’s a good representation of what the group was then,” Cohen said. “[But] it feels like we could go in and do those tunes again, and it would be different.” O —Jeff McGinnis

foolish as to actually play the single in this set, which is, yes, stamped from pristine white vinyl, you will also find Run-DMC’s less-wellremembered rap version for 1989’s “Ghostbusters II.” You’ve been warned: There’ll be no one you can call. The Stay Puft set does have a whiff of marshmallow about it, but nothing overpowering. You can be assured that neither your dog, your cat, nor your children will be sniffing around it, begging for a taste. Inside the set you’ll also find some nifty lenticular stills from the film. If you pick up the limited edition package, you’ll also get a set of “Stay Puft Marshmallow Man facial expressions with three individual emotions.” Hey, we told you it was weird and cool. In its new release, Sony calls Parker’s theme “one of the world’s all-time great perennial party anthems.” This is one heck of way to honor it, as well as the spirited film it fronts. Ghostbusters.com is waiting for you to call to get yours. They’re waiting to believe you. O — Jim Beard

Sony Legacy must think “Ghostbusters” fans are living in the past. That could be the only reason that they chose to issue a 12” single, those famous Frisbees of the 1980s, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the original “Ghostbusters” film. The Stay Puft Super Deluxe Edition marshmallow-scented white vinyl 12” single is a true ode to that day in 1984 when audiences packed into theaters to experience one of the greatest horrorcomedies of all time. Nestled in a monstrous, puffy white sleeve that opens to a panorama of views of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man’s heinous attack on New York, this collectible vinyl surely wins the award for weirdest yet coolest Ghostbusters item. What better way could there be to remember one of the weirdest yet coolest films? The single features Ray Parker Jr.’s claim to fame, the “Ghostbusters” theme that ranks right up there with the 1966 “Batman” theme, The Addams Family theme and “Theme from a Summer Place.” If you’d be so

from the album, and its piano-laden introduction is right at home next to any Linda Ronstadt or Elton John song of that era. This collection chronicles Milsap’s continued success throughout the 1980s, and it includes his 1986 holiday release, “Christmas with Ronnie Milsap.” Though Milsap’s chart power dwindled after 1985’s “Lost in the Fifties Tonight,” the collection includes some of his later works, right up through 1991’s “Back to the Grindstone” and his 2006 return to RCA after a 15-year split, “My Life.” “My Life” featured a single, “Local Girls,” which proved Milsap’s adaptability to changing times. The song bears a distinct resemblance to many of today’s country hits and their typical subjects — beer and girls.

highlighted in this box set. Milsap was always known for being an early pioneer in crossover country music. Blind since childhood, Milsap looked up to artists like Ray Charles as he mastered the piano and embarked on a music career in the 1960s. His early works were heavily influenced by soul, rock, blues and R&B. A chance meeting with Charley Pride rerouted his career toward country music, where he essentially found his calling. One can distinctly hear the influence early rock and country pioneers such as Jerry Lee Lewis had on Milsap on his first RCA album, “Where My Heart Is” (1973). Milsap, who most often performed songs written by others during his early years, penned his own homage to the storytellers of country on “Country Cookin’” from 1975’s “A Legend in My Time.” In 1977, Milsap released “It Was Almost Like a Song,” which marked his official arrival on the adult contemporary charts and further solidified his role as a crossover artist. The title track was one of two No. 1 hits

Sometime between the harddrinking, hard-living outlaws of country music’s early days and the polished country-pop stars of today, the genre went through an era during which it tried to find its place in the music world. During this time — primarily the 1970s and 1980s — country singers began to branch out into crossover areas, inspired by other genres such as R&B, rock and pop. One of the most successful artists of that era was Ronnie Milsap, who boasted no fewer than 40 No. 1 singles, six Grammys and four Country Music Association Album of the Year awards. For the 2014 holiday season, RCA — the label that released Milsap’s records during his prime — is releasing its complete catalog of Milsap albums in one box set, “The RCA Albums Collection” ($97). Milsap is a 2014 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and he was also honored with the career achievement award from the Academy of Country Music this fall. The honors put the icing on the cake of an impressive musical career, most of which is

“The John Denver Radio Show “promotional record. Disc Two opens with the soaring “Rocky Mountain High,” now one of Colorado’s two official state songs. Also featured on this disc are selections from “Back Home Again” — arguably Denver’s most successful album — including “Annie’s Song,” written for his first wife, something of a mythic figure among fans. The live version of John Martin Sommers’ joyous “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” is here, as is the live version of Jim Connor’s rollicking “Grandma’s Feather Bed.” Disc Three highlights include the invigorating “Calypso” written for Denver’s good friend Jacques Cous-
teau and “Fly Away,” featuring the ethereal vocals of Olivia Newton-John. More duets are highlighted on Disc Four, including pairings with Plácido Domingo and Emmylou Harris. Listeners who know Denver’s work well may be slightly disoriented by the sequencing of some of the songs, and knowledgeable fans may notice one or two inaccuracies in Colorado Music Hall of Fame director G. Brown’s accompanying essay, but these are nitpicks. And no worries: Randy Sparks’ slam “Saturday Night in Toledo, Ohio” is not included. O —Becky Beard

A cemetery may not be one’s first thought to stop when researching the history of Toledo’s early movers and shakers. But two local women may help change that with the release of their new book, “Toledo’s Woodlawn Cemetery.” Rebecca Deck Visser and Renee Ciminillo Jayne have worked as docents for the past several years at the cemetery at cemetery at 1502 W. Central Ave., which was founded in 1876. The two teamed up to write the book, published this month as part of Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series. “There’s over 70,000 people buried here,” Jayne said. “Everybody knows somebody that’s here.” Visser said the duo wanted the book to serve as a guide to local history — a history many people are not familiar with. “There’s so much history here,” Visser said. “People have no clue. … You have names like Laskey, Upton, Secor. That’s Toledo.” Through the use of more than 200 images of both the people who came to be buried in the cemetery as well as their often elaborate, building-like monuments, the book gives insights into Toledo history using names such as Libbey,
Flower, Browning, DeVilbiss, Swayne and Ford. Baseball Hall of Famers are buried at Woodlawn. A survivor of the Titanic is there. The man credited with establishing professional baseball in Toledo is on its grounds. The man who invented roller skates is within its gates. “I’d like people to understand that everybody — it doesn’t matter if they’re a big name like Libbey or just a regular everyday person — everybody has made a contribution to Toledo’s culture in one way or another,” Jayne said. “The people we highlighted in the book, all of those people had something happen to them in life, either through hard work or some special skill or talent, that they were able to utilize to make Toledo a better place.” The authors each have their favorite parts of the book. Visser’s favorite is the last chapter in the book, dedicated to the Lloyd brothers, Toledo stone cutters who created some of the most elaborate monuments in the cemetery, making it an outdoor art museum of sorts.
“People don’t really look at the art that’s in the stones,” she said. “That’s my passion.” Jayne’s favorite part of the book was highlighting John Gunckel, whose stone pyramid memorial ranks among the most unique and impressive monuments in Woodlawn Cemetery. Sometimes referred to as the “Father of the fatherless,” Gunckel dedicated his life to guiding the most undisciplined boys of Toledo onto the right path through his program, the Toledo Newsboys Association. “He’s a person who, for a whole generation, saved these young boys from becoming societal dropouts. If it wasn’t for him, so many of these young men would not have been the responsible citizens they turned into,” Jayne said. A photograph of some of these boys standing beside his memorial was given to the authors by a granddaughter of Gunckel for use on the cover of the book. The 128-page, softcover book is available at Woodlawn Cemetery, area bookstores as well as major book outlets, including Barnes & Noble and Amazon. Its list price is $21.99. O

‘Kronos Rising’ offers a story with teeth ... giant teeth
If you’re a fan of big monsters, this is definitely a story for you. Max Hawthorne’s “Kronos Rising” takes readers on a roller coaster ride of gigantic scale. We’re talking prehistoric big. The heroes of the novel are Jake Braddock, the sheriff of a small coastal
Florida town, and Amara Takagi, a marine biologist. Then there’s the monster. The first clue readers get about its size comes from Amara researching a fragment of the creature’s tooth. According to her calculations, the whole tooth would weigh
about 8 pounds. The approximate size of the monster, when we finally encounter it, is more than twice the length and width of a typical city bus. This titanic beast is fast and vicious — at one point it takes down a massive bull sperm whale with little effort.
What’s more important than Black Friday or Cyber Monday? A global day dedicated to giving back.
However, the greater monsters in the book are the humans who want to hunt the beast down and kill it. These characters were your standard two-dimensional bad guys who early on seem destined to end up as monster chow by the end of the book. For the most part, “Kronos Rising” is a solid read. Hawthorne is good at writing action sequences and keeps the story moving at a brisk pace. That said, his handling of characters in the story was rather simplistic and two dimensional. But this is a book about a giant monster. I wasn’t expecting Hemingway.
BAD CREDIT? NO CREDIT? Office: 419-714-8010 or 419-345-5259 AND DRiVe TODAY!
Reminiscent of “Jurassic Park” or “Jaws,” “Kronos Rising” shows Hawthorne really did his homework to bring the creature to life in the story. He occasionally writes from the viewpoint of the monster in a way that pulls readers in. Overall, this is a book worth picking up, especially if you’re a fan of monsters or prehistoric animals. It’s a good adventure story and a pretty easy read, which doesn’t slow down or bore the reader. I would give it 8 and a half out of 10 giant fossilized teeth. “Kronos Rising” is published by Far From the Tree Press Publishing. For more information, visit kronosrising. com or maxhawthorne.com. ‘What If ?’ adapts popular webcomic into entertaining, offbeat read
Millions of people visit xkcd.com each week to read Randall Munroe’s witty, offbeat webcomic, featuring stick-figure drawings addressing topics of science, technology, language and love. The former NASA roboticist also maintains a popular Q-andA page on the site, where he offers concrete scientific answers to oddball hypotheticals like, “How much Force power can Yoda output?” and “What would happen if someone’s DNA vanished?” Now Munroe has collected updated and expanded versions of his most popular questions plus dozens of new ones into a book: “What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions” (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $24). The first chapter sets the tone as Munroe considers “What would happen if the Earth and all terrestrial objects suddenly stopped spinning, but the atmosphere retained its velocity?” His six-page answer begins: “Nearly everyone would die. Then things would get interesting.” For a humorous book, there is an awful lot of death. O “What would happen if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90 percent the speed of light?” (Death.) O “What would happen if you made a periodic table out of cubeshaped bricks, where each brick
was made of the corresponding element?” (Death.) O “If you suddenly began rising steadily at 1 foot per second, how exactly would you die?” (Depending on what you’re wearing, either hypothermia or loss of oxygen. Either way, death.) O “What if I took a swim in a typical spent nuclear fuel pool?” (Surprisingly, not death — as long as you stay near the top and don’t get too near the actual fuel canisters at the bottom. A theory I don’t plan on testing.) The chapters are broken up by lists of questions Munroe doesn’t answer — the “weird (and worrying) questions” that are apparently too weird and too worrying even for Munroe. (Exam-
ples: “Would it be possible to get your teeth to such a cold temperature that they would shatter upon drinking a hot cup of coffee?” “If a Venus fly trap could eat a person, about how long would it take for the human to be fully de-juiced and absorbed?”) Questions range from the mathematically thought-provoking (“What if everyone actually had only one soul mate, a random person somewhere in the world?” “When, if ever, will Facebook contain more profiles of dead people than living ones?”) to the just plain odd (“If every person on Earth aimed a laser pointer at the Moon at the same time, would it change color?” “Is it possible to build a jet pack using downward-firing machine guns?”). Most of the questions — while entertaining to consider — can be summed up by Munroe’s response to “What would happen if you set off a nuclear bomb in the eye of a hurricane?” Apparently this question is asked often enough that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration actually has an official response, which concludes: “Needless to say, this is not a good idea.” If you were skimming this review and found yourself musing, “Hmm, what WOULD happen if a hair dryer with continuous power were turned on and put in an airtight box?” then this is the book for you. Raise some Cash
Musicians to channel Man in Black for Feed Your Neighbor benefit Dec. 7. By Jay Hathaway Toledo Free Press Staff Writer star@toledofreepress.com
“Sometimes I am two people. Johnny is the nice one. Cash causes all the trouble. They fight.” —Johnny Cash
S
uch is the duality and fragile imperfection that defined Johnny Cash as a man and a musical artist — part rebel, part charitable Christian and both parts sincere.
A group of Toledo-area musicians have honored that same spirit in recent years, playing songs by the Man in Black and raising money for a cause while they’re at it. Raise Some Cash is once again ready to rock the stage at the Village Idiot, 309 Conant St. in Maumee, from 2-8 p.m. Dec. 7. Proceeds from the event benefit Augsburg Lutheran Church’s food pantry, which is part of the Feed Your Neighbor network of Toledo food pantries. This year’s lineup of performers
includes Old State Line, Kentucky Chrome, Dave Carpenter, Minglewood Labor Camp, The Thirsty Hooligans and Locoweed, as well as visual artists Streetspun Yarnbombing and paperDENIMart. The event is open to all, and children are welcome to attend with parents. A donation of $5 is suggested, and charity items will be available for purchase and raffle. This is “Volume 5” of Raise Some Cash, which has been held on a “not quite annual” basis over
the past seven years, according to founder Larry Meyer. Meyer, who is also the drummer for Old State Line, attends church at Augsburg. He explained that the event first came together after members of the congregation expressed a need for funds and food items. Meyer said he and a friend, John Rockwood, had worked on some fundraising events together before. When the pantry reached out and said they needed help, Meyer recognized his ability to contribute some-
thing through music and stepped up. “I had the idea for a fundraiser, and it all just sort of clicked with the Cash name, giving it sort of a snappy title,” Meyer said. “I stood up in front of the congregation weeks later and said, ‘Here’s what I’m willing to do. If you’re looking for a fundraiser in the church basement with some gospel singing, I’m not the guy, but this is what I can do for you,’ and they were very supportive.” n CASH CONTINUES ON 25

Donnajean Stockmaster, community connections director at TAM and director for Feed Your Neighbor , said the group’s mission is to make Toledo a better place to live by working with congregations to meet human needs, create community and work for justice. A Toledo tradition since 2005 well as one in Ottawa Lake, Michigan. The pantries supply three-day rations of food to those who come seeking help. Stockmaster said all the pantries are managed by volunteers. “That is another way to create community, having neighbors help others in their community,” she said. “It’s an easy way for the public to come in and bring a couple bags of
food, donate $5 and just kind of hang around, laugh and have some pizza, and listen to some top-notch music. It’s just a really enjoyable time. And Johnny Cash? Who better?” Lance Neil Hulsey of Kentucky Chrome has played all five events. “Cash’s music has an inherent quality that makes it timeless,” he said. “Cash had the ability to reel me in and sometimes make the Earth stop spinning momentarily. Very few artists have this effect on me.” Hulsey said he appreciates being able to raise funds for a good cause. “It is very easy to become consumed in your personal problems, forgetting about those who have problems worse than your own, like not having enough food,” he said. “I feel that using a gift that I’ve been given to, in turn, give a gift to someone else is a beautiful thing.” This is Dave Carpenter’s first year playing Raise Some Cash, but the longtime Toledo musician and co-
founder of Acoustics for Autism is no stranger to charity or Johnny Cash. “I think the camaraderie among musicians is the big draw — hanging out with other players. It’s fun, and we’re raising money for a good cause, too. ... [Cash] is very cross-generational. You’ve got people that maybe aren’t country fans, but still like Johnny Cash.” Meyer acknowledged that the duality of Johnny Cash is one of the things that makes him appealing, providing the perfect inspiration to play raucous Americana and roots rock music while focusing on philanthropy. “This is the same guy that could sing a song like ‘Cocaine Blues,’” Meyer said. “But if you know anything about his history, you know he never claimed to be perfect and was a devout Christian.” Meyer said the “cold, hard cash” raised by the event allows them to stock the Augsburg pantry and lessen the burden on Feed Your Neighbor. Toledo Area Artists By Sarah Ottney
TOLEDO FREE PRESS Editor in Chief sottney@toledofreepress.com
Toledo Museum of Art’s (TMA) annual juried exhibit of regional artwork opened Nov. 21 amid some controversy. The 95th annual Toledo Area Artists (TAA) Exhibition features 73 works by 28 artists, selected from a review of 462 portfolios. Mediums represented in the show include sculpture, painting, drawing, video work, installations and ceramics. The free exhibition was curated by TMA Mellon Fellow Halona NortonWestbrook. Los Angeles Times art critic Christopher Knight, a former Toledo Museum of Art fellow and a three-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in criticism, was the juror. “Given the nature of the show, there isn’t necessarily coherence among works, although I did notice certain things have been installed in ways where some works talk to other works in their vicinity,” Knight said during a media preview at the gallery Nov. 21. “I’m of the opinion that interesting works of art speak in two ways: They speak as loudly as possible in the voice of the artist but they also — really interesting artists tend to want to have their work speak to other art. I see art as a conversation among artists through the vehicle of the work they do and that gets reflected in the way this show is installed.” One example Knight offered was “Swilind,” an acrylic and photo collage by Katie St. Clair of Ann Arbor, which was awarded Best in Show, the show’s
top prize. The piece is installed next to a series of photographs by Charles Mintz of Cleveland. “Visually they don’t look alike, but both of them are about this kind of melancholic poetry of collapse,” Knight said. He also pointed to “City Band,” a massive pencil on paper drawing of a marching band by Chris La Porte of Grand Rapids, Michigan, which hangs across from a series of small oil painting portraits by David Eichenberg of Toledo — both examples of what Knight calls hyperrealism. “Both of them have a photographic quality, but that photographic quality I think is deceptive because this image, which does derive from a photograph, is very different from the actual photograph,” Knight said. “One of the obvious differences between a photograph and a drawing is a photograph is largely instantaneous and this drawing (‘City Band’) probably took a year. So you see time in it, in a way you don’t see time in a photograph. “And here’s a portrait (by Eichenberg) of a guy who works with his hands, clearly, and it’s a handwork portrait of a guy who works with his hands,” Knight said. “The historical style is kind of a traditional renaissance motif, of an aristocrat in profile, and aristocrats tended not to work with their hands. I also love the way his eyes are shaded with his glasses, which for him are to aid in perception, which is also what we are trying to do looking at the painting.” TMA has gotten some negative pushback from the local artistic community regarding the exhibit, particu-
larly with how few artists were chosen for this year’s show. But TMA Director Brian Kennedy said the show — like the museum and the art world itself — changes out of necessity over the years. He pointed to other controversies in the show’s history, including 1978 when photographs were accepted for the first time and 1991 when video was accepted for the first time. “My hope is in all of this, we’ll be just very thoughtful,” Kennedy said. “And being thoughtful is being open to critique and welcoming it and listening and then dialoguing and continuing to adapt, to come up with a model that works.” Knight also discussed the changes to the show Nov. 20 during an “Evening with the Jurors” dinner and reception conducted at the TMA Glass Pavilion. “I think [the changes] can be a really good thing,” he said. “I think it’s essential for shows like this to change. … The contemporary art world since the 1980s has become completely transnational. There are no boundaries anymore. So to restrict this exhibition to just a tight, local community feels out of place. I like the idea that it’s been opened up to a larger area, with a smaller number of artists, which requires a certain amount of niche from those artists to be meaningful. … Change is hard. Change is also essential.” TMA is one of the only major art museums to offer a juried art show for local artists each year. “It’s pretty special this still exists,” Norton-Westbrook said. “And part of that is keeping it fresh each year.” The artists are: Andrew Borowiec of

UT theater gives Swedish tale ‘Miss Julie’ modern twist By Jeff McGinnis Toledo Free Press Pop Culture Editor PopGoesJeff@gmail.com
In the world of theater, few plays are considered as transformational and groundbreaking as August Strind-
berg’s “Miss Julie.” Originally written in 1888, the tragic tale of an upperclass woman desperate to escape the trappings of her world through an affair with a servant has resonated with audiences around the world. Now, the University of Toledo De-
partment of Theatre & Film brings Strindberg’s tale to life once more in a new production directed by Associate Theatre Professor Cornel Gabara from a new translation of the original Swedish text by Daniel Thobias, assistant professor of theater.
You are invited! WCM 4th Annual
The show began its run Nov. 21 and will continue with a second weekend of performances 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5-6 and 2 p.m. Dec. 7 at UT’s Center for Performing Arts Center Theatre. Tickets cost $7-$12. “I’ve been translating things here and there, mostly modern pieces, and I wanted to try something a little more difficult,” said Thobias, a native Swede, in an interview with Toledo Free Press. “Strindberg is — it’s not modern Swedish, but it’s not that far removed, so it’s not too difficult to translate.” “When Daniel proposed a new translation of the play, I was immediately interested,” Gabara said. “Strindberg describes ‘Miss Julie’ as the first true Swedish naturalistic play. Starting from this statement, I consider this play to be about a woman who tries to live ‘truly’ to her nature, in
spite of differences established by different social classes, gender relationships and religious dogma.” For Thobias, “Miss Julie” is a text that has had resonance throughout his life. He was first introduced to the play in grade school in his native Sweden, where it is a standard. “When you read the original language, it actually comes across as fairly contemporary,” he said. “Even though the idioms and certain expressions aren’t used anymore, it still feels very vibrant and new.” Gabara believes that even though the class structure Strindberg depicted and deconstructed may be obsolete, the emotional core of the piece remains as relatable as ever. “The play has endured more than a century because Strindberg was able to understand human nature, and human nature has not changed.” O

CARLSON’S CRITTERS
A home for Cleo, Gramps
Cleo is a fun loving, happy and energetic girl. At 3 years old, she is full of energy and enjoys any type of toys you have to offer. She is food motivated, so training her will be easy. She enjoys other dogs’ company but does not like sharing her food or toys with them. Cleo’s foster mom also said Cleo loved sitting on her lap. She may be big, but that does not mean she won’t cuddle. Cleo will make someone a great best friend, you will just have to come in and meet her to find out how awesome she is. Cleo is spayed, up to date on her vaccinations and is microchipped. Do not let his age fool you, Gramps still has plenty of love to give. Gramps is a 9-year-old male cat looking for a home where he can relax and be himself. Gramps loves to be held and n SUDOKU ANSWERS FOUND ON 34

It is expected that all purchasers have contacted a Real Estate Attorney and Title Company prior to bidding. 4. ORC (Ohio Revised Code) 5721.16 states Parcels shall be sold for not less than the lesser of (1) fair market value, or (2) the total amount of taxes etc. found by the court in foreclosure action. Bids of $300.00 or less must be paid in full the day of sale. Bids over $300.00 require a deposit of half (50%) of the bid price. All deposits, fees and paid in full parcels will be required to be paid immediately at the close of sale for each parcel. Additional charges for deed preparation, transfer fees, recording fees, and current postage which total $74.00 are in addition to the bid price, Ohio Revised code 5723.12(A). YOU MUST have your money with you at the time you are bidding. NO ONE will be allowed to leave and return at a later time to pay their deposits. REMEMBER – if you do not have your money with you, don’t bid. Each parcel must be paid for immediately at the close of sale for each parcel. No checks, credit or debit cards will be accepted. Deposits will be accepted in CASH ONLY.
THE DEADLINE FOR FINAL PAYMENT IS TEN (10) BUSINESS DAYS FROM DATE OF SALE. Final Payments may be made by cash, or money order in the County Auditor’s Office, 7th floor, in the Forfeited Land Department. No extension of time will be permitted. If payment is not made in full on the 10th day, the purchaser will forfeit any monies paid in, and the parcel will be offered to the back-up bidder for the same price. The back-up bidder will have ten (10) business days to pay in full or the property will be offered at our next scheduled sale. 5. The Auditor’s Office will only prepare a deed in the name of the successful bidder, unless a Bid Release Form is filed. The bid release form allows a citizen to bid for another taxpayer who is unable to attend the sale. If you plan on putting property in a company name, you must have a copy of the Articles of Incorporation on file in the Auditor’s Office, prior to the sale. If your name is not included on the Articles of Incorporation, you must have a written letter of authorization submitted prior to each Forfeited Land Sale. The purchaser does not become the owner until the deed is delivered to the County Recorder. This will be about two (2) weeks after the sale. You cannot enter the property, alter it, or remove anything from the property until you are the owner, which is after the deed is recorded. NOTICE: ENTERING THE PROPERTY WITHOUT PERMISSION OF OWNER(S) OR OCCUPANT(S) IS A VIOLATION OF OHIO REVISED CODE SECTION 2911.21 PUNISHABLE BY UP TO 30 DAYS IN JAIL AND/OR A FINE OF $250.00. FURTHER, PHYSICALLY REMOVING THE PROPERTY OF THE OCCUPANTS WITHOUT A COURT ORDER, EVEN AFTER RECEIVING THE DEED, MAY RESULT IN CIVIL OR CRIMINAL LIABILITY. 6. The Auditor reserves the right to require payment in full on day of sale for select parcels marked by asterisk (*). On such select parcels the full bid price must be paid by cash or certified funds within 30 minutes of time of sale. 7. Forfeited Lands shall not be transferred to any person that is delinquent on real property taxes in this state. Consequently, all purchasers will be required to sign an affidavit of prior non-ownership and present valid identification. Any sale that is refused for this reason will result in a forfeit of all deposits and may be prosecuted. 8. The County Auditor cannot give any warranty of title. All sales are subject to Federal Tax Liens, if any. Parcels designated as IN REM are sold subject to all prior liens. The County Auditor does not give any representation regarding possession, eviction, prior inspection, scheduled demolition, health code violation, or any other matter. Buyers are encouraged to investigate these matters prior to the sale. 9. Attendance will be limited by seating capacity on a first-come, first-serve basis. You must register and have a bid card to participate in the bidding (there is no fee to register). Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. Sales will commence at 10:00 a.m. 10. The auctioneer may increase the minimum bid increments at his discretion in order to keep the bid process moving quickly. Do not delay in making your bid. Sale is final at the strike of the gavel. All decisions of the auctioneer are final. Acceptance of your bid creates a contract between you and the County Auditor. The Lucas County Prosecutor may file a lawsuit for breach of contract if you fail to pay the full price. You may be prohibited from participating in future sales. Bidding on property with the intent to delay the sale or with the intention of not paying the bid price constitutes the crime of obstructing official business under O.R.C. 2921.31. Persons violating this section may be prosecuted. 11. Sales are conducted based solely upon the permanent parcel number of the property. The county does not use addresses for any purpose. The county is not responsible for inaccurate addresses provided in the county records. The county does not warrant or guarantee any information provided in the county records. Sincerely,
Anita Lopez
Lucas County Auditor
