Fighting hunger

W

hen Toledo Free Press and several partners — Columbia Gas of Ohio, Hollywood Casino Toledo, Wells Fargo Advisors, WNWO and 1370 WSPD — launched Free From Hunger 2013, we of course knew there was no imminent end to the problem. If anything, the agencies we have helped — Food For Thought, Feed Lucas County Children and Cherry Street Mission Ministries — are busier than ever. But in terms of raising awareness and much-needed funds, the year’s campaign is a success. In addition to the $15,000 cash that has been raised and distributed to these agencies through the Toledo Community Foundation, several events kept the spotlight on hunger in our hometown. Free From Hunger 2013 played a role in such fundraising events as the concert with “Bachelor” Bob Guiney, the tremendously successful Jam City peanut Thomas F. Pounds butter-and-jelly event, Food Fight 419, the Hunger Awareness Family Festival, the upcoming “Anchorman 2” reception with WTOL-11 anchor Jerry Anderson and others. As we enter the holiday season, we will feature more about the Cherry Street Mission. As stated on its website, “Cherry Street provides a variety of services to roughly 400 people a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We serve any person in need of food, clothing, shelter, and supportive services who comes to our doors. No one is turned away.” That is a major responsibility that requires nonstop effort and action. As many of us prepare for the bounty and festivities of the holiday season, it is imperative that we help our neighbors. Cherry Street Mission does not receive any United Way or government funds for its programs. There are many ways you can help: O Make a monetary donation. O Mail in a donation form. O Donate online. O Become a Pillar of Hope monthly giver. O Volunteer your time and talents. O Donate items such as food and clothing. O Donate specific items on the mission’s wish list. O Donate other items such as cash, stocks, bonds, automobiles, boats, real estate, collectibles, bequests, life insurance, charitable trusts and donor-advised funds. We thank our partners in Free From Hunger 2013. And while we are pleased to have helped in some small way, we also recognize this is a long-term battle that will require many more movements, many more partners and many more understanding and giving hearts. A Toledo tradition since 2005 ToledoFreePress.com n MILLER CONTINUED FROM 3 “December Star” is a beautiful, emotional tribute that will take its place alongside the classics for those fortunate enough to hear it. Thank you, James. Another remarkable track, which like “If You Believe” was not conceived as a holiday song, is Jeff Stewart’s “Sleepyhead.” The intimate, heartbreaking track encompasses just two people, a long, cold night and snowy roads; it contains a hook that could be a line from a novel: “She writes ‘I am fragile’ with the refrigerator magnets/ There’s many more words to choose from but she picks this and its fragments.” Stewart reveals more about the inner workings of his characters in four minutes than many films do in two hours. If Stewart’s new CD maintains the quality of “Sleepyhead” and his Red Cross track, “Little One,” he will deliver a masterpiece.

Many champions

As always, there were many champions who helped make this project a reality. In addition to literally hundreds of artists, I owe gratitude to Christopher Stoll of Audioflare Productions and Zeta Recording Studio in Holland, who locked himself away for days to record nearly half of the CD’s tracks; Wyte, who engineers the disc and this year

If, like me, you are blessed with healthy children, you understand another of my motivations for this project — not ever taking that health for granted, and offering work and contribution as a way of displaying that gratitude and eternal thanks. There are more people to thank than I have space for, but every one of you should know in your heart that I believe in you and that your efforts will bring hope and belief to many, many local families. Today, there are many different treatment options for skin cancer. However, Mohs micrographic surgery (Mohs surgery) is a procedure that has proven to be the single most effective technique for non-melanoma skin cancers (such as basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas), with a cure rate exceeding 95% in most patients. Mohs surgery is a tissue-sparing procedure performed under local anesthesia to remove skin cancer one layer at a time. Removing skin cancer one layer at a time allows your surgeon to examine your skin cells immediately under a microscope to see if cancer cells are still visible. When no more cancer cells are detected the Mohs procedure is complete and reconstruction of the surgical wound commences, often on the same day. Mohs surgery is used for nonmelanoma skin cancers that: • Are located in a visible, sensitive and/or tight area of the body, including the face, head, neck, genitals, hands, feet, and shins. • Are aggressively growing or evolving rapidly. • Have a higher risk of spreading to other parts of your body. The CD’s producer, Michael S. Miller, editor in chief of Toledo Free Press and news director for 1370 WSPD, said he has no musical talent of his own, but relishes the opportunities to work with musicians and artists on the Make-AWish benefit CD. “I love music” Miller said. “I have no talent for it. I can’t sing, I can’t play an instrument. … Getting those families the money, that’s why we do it, but on a selfish level, I enjoy working with these artists and collaborating.” Miller said matching specific songs to specific artists is one of the great aspects of producing the annual CD. “Imagine, for me, the chance to work with Kyle White or Ramona Collins or Mighty Wyte or Joel Zmuda — for me to ask them to consider putting their interpretation on a song, and they say yes,” Miller said. “Then to finally hear their songs and see that vision realized for a great charity is an ultimate sense of accomplishment.” The benefit CD was born out of a project to digitize historical songs for libraries and universities. In 2008, Toledo Free Press collected old recordings from 78 and 33 1/3 rpm vinyl records and had them digitized for local libraries. Miller said a follow-up project the next year that collected original songs written about the city inspired the idea for a benefit CD for Make-A-Wish Foundation. The first year, Miller said he had to “beg, borrow and steal” to get artists to cut a track. This year he was overwhelmed with 80 artists who wanted to participate. Miller started listening to Christmas songs in July to narrow the list down to 45 artists, he said. “We could have produced a quality four-CD set,” Miller said. “And for two minutes, I actually thought about seeking a quote for a price to do that. “As far as the creative side, I could not be more humbled that the artists spent the hours they did to put together this CD,” he said. “In terms of Make-A-Wish, I hope this is a project that can fund a lot of wishes for local families.” O

“December Star,” a track written and performed by James A. Molnar and Luke D. Rosen on “Holiday Wishes 3,” sets a familiar scene — a holiday party lit by a fireplace, complete with laughing friends and family. But the song also asks: What about the loved ones who aren’t there? “We wanted to make [the song] something that was … universal and [focus on] that feeling at the holidays when you’re around all these people and you’re happy because all of these people are around. I always find the second I walk away from that situation, you can’t help but think about who wasn’t there and that’s what the song is about,” Rosen said. Rosen played the music for the song while Molnar sang. Rosen is the choral director for St. John’s Jesuit High School & Academy and director of music ministry at Corpus Christi University Parish. Molnar is the design editor for Toledo Free Press and Toledo Free Press Star. He is also a designer for “Holiday Wishes 3.” The two have been friends for about three years. Their track paints a picture of the journey home from a holiday gathering. In the bleak winter night, a shining star catches the singer’s eye. “For me, the star is my mom (Paula Molnar Fels, who died in 2011) and I think a lot of people will be able to relate with having their own star,” Molnar said. Molnar knew he wanted to contribute a track to “Holiday Wishes 3,” which benefits the Make-AWish Foundation, when production was wrapping up on “Holiday Wishes 2” last year.

“I got the idea and I said to Luke, ‘Hey, why don’t we do a song together for the Make-A-Wish CD? We can do ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ and you can come up with your own arrangement,’” Molnar said. Rosen recalled responding, “Or we could just try to write something original.” Both men knew they wanted the song to have a strong emotional core. “I didn’t want us to be doing some song that neither one of us felt strongly about,” Rosen said. The two discussed holiday imagery before landing on the star metaphor. They also turned to a poem Molnar wrote about his mother. “I had written a poem shortly after she died and I used that poem as a springboard to some of the lyrics for this song,” Molnar said. Molnar said the song’s heavy emotional content didn’t hit him until he was recording in the studio. Rosen said, “[James] was out on [his] own in that separate room kind of reflecting that aloneness that is in the music. The rest of us were all in a room together.” Molnar wasn’t the only one having a new experience. Recording with an electronic keyboard was new for Rosen. “I hadn’t done it that way ever. I’d always used a real grand piano,” he said. Rosen, who has written several songs, put musical references into “December Star” from two Christmas classics: “We Three Kings” and “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” “I like weaving some things in there. I think those things put you in the right frame of mind. They can subconsciously put you somewhere,” he said. Both Rosen and Molnar have sang and played music since childhood. Molnar, a member of The Toledo Swiss Singers, said he usually sings in choirs so performing “December

for who have lost a parent or had some kind of a loss like that, they’ve actually really gravitated toward it,” Rosen said. The fact that the track helps support the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions, is gratifying, they said.

“Make-A-Wish is a perfect organization … that really brings home what humanity should be about. It’s about helping others, especially kids, when they’re most vulnerable,” Molnar said. “Some of them are worse off than others. The bottom line is, some of them just need hope and Make-AWish helps provide hope.” O The Toledo Community Foundation helps individuals, families and businesses meet their charitable goals. As Christmastime returns, draw a chair closer to the fire, fill the glass, and listen to “Holiday Wishes 3” disc two, the bonus track. Familiar voices haunt the rendi-

tion of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” which begins and ends with Vincent Price to scare up a little holiday spirit. “It’s a nightmare before Christmas; it’s a haunting ghost story, but it’s a Christmas story. Who better than Vincent Price to start the reading?” said Michael S. Miller, Toledo Free

Press editor in chief, who produced the Make-A-Wish fundraising project. Price narrated a 1949 TV special of the yuletide classic. “It was one of those sublime moments when [Michael and I] found it and we were like, ‘This is cool,’” said music producer Mighty Wyte, sound engineer for the charity CD.

Miller decided to use the 1843 story to showcase the talent who volunteered for the disc. “I thought: Let’s do a radio play. And the absolute zenith of this art is ‘A Christmas Carol,’” Miller said. “I edited a radio script of [the story] down to its bare essence of the ghost appearances — Dickens, forgive me

for hacking at your work. But I’m extraordinarily pleased with the results.” Enter the star power — cue the recording — hear the fun! Fred LeFebvre, host of the morning news on 1370 WSPD, recorded an Ogden Nash poem for the 2012 CD. This year, he plays Ebenezer Scrooge. n CAROL CONTINUES ON 11

n CAROL CONTINUED FROM 10 “I took it as a challenge to become a character,” LeFebvre said. “I wanted it to be something that people would remember. You have to suck people into that story because it’s so familiar; you have to bring a little something new to it to make them want to pay attention.” And he does. From his first utterance, LeFebvre commands attention.

“There’s a little bit of evil in everybody, and I think I reached back to a little bit of Scrooge in my own self and pulled that out,” LeFebvre said and laughed. “I did put a little bit of an English accent on it, more like the original Alastair Sim’s version that people see on TV in black and white during the holiday season.” “[LeFebvre] just becomes Eb-

enezer Scrooge,” said Jerry Anderson, WTOL-11 anchor, who voices Jacob Marley. “There’s just so much talent in this city and in this region, and it’s really nice through this fun, seasonal project a lot more of it gets exposed than otherwise would; I think it’s great.” Floating in to be early-morning specters were Mary Beth Zolik and Rick Woodell of 101.5 The River.

“To watch all those people stand around when Sean walked up to the mic and uttered ‘God bless us every one!’ and was just so happy to do that — to watch the smiles on everybody’s faces, it just really warmed everybody. It was fantastic.” Local actor and director Matthew Gretzinger narrates the timeless tale, which also includes Toledo Free Press columnists Jeff McGinnis and Jim Beard. “[‘A Christmas Carol’ is] a story of realization and redemption and it goes down to the core of what makes us human,” Wyte said. “Who wouldn’t like to be able to get a do-over if you didn’t do it right the first time?” Zolik said. “Dickens and Scrooge will forever remind people — just like [Dr.] Seuss and the Grinch. Those two stories, which ironically are about sourpusses, illustrate how even in the grumpiest person, that light of Christmas shines through and makes us smile,” Miller said. O

“When you’re in a room with the talent we were in, it’s very easy to fall into character,” said Woodell, who plays the Ghost of Christmas Present. “And mostly everybody hit it cold.” “And did it in one take,” added Zolik, who voiced the Ghost of Christmas Past. “We were all in the same room and then one of us would get up from a chair and somebody else would sit down, somebody else would step in front of the microphone and somebody else would move out — it was like old-style radio. We thought it was so fun,” Zolik said. “Once the light came on, it stayed on until it was finished; it’s seamless,” Woodell said. That was even with two players making their recording debuts: Evan Miller, 7, and Sean Miller, 5, sons of the editor, have parts inIMPORTED the play. FROM ITOLEDO! “Evan and Sean and rehearsed for about five days. I had no idea how they’d react to being in the studio and being surrounded by the grownups acting to microphones,” Miller said.

12 Holiday Wishes

TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER news@toledofreepress.com

Producer / sound engineer / musician Mighty Wyte is no stranger to the “Holiday Wishes” series — he has contributed to the production of all three albums and recorded a song for the first album in 2011. For “Holiday Wishes 3,” he offered a new take on an old classic with “Sugar Plum Mighty,” based on “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker Suite.” “It’s actually really dope,” said Wyte, whose given name is Matt Feher. “I tried to encapsulate the orchestral side of the composition, and incorporate it with hip-hop and updated drums. It’s an instrumental, but I made it so it can be rapped over.” n MIGHTY CONTINUES ON 13

Mighty Wyte has engineered all four Toledo Free Press charity CDs and has recorded tracks for two of the christmas CDs.

n MIGHTY CONTINUED FROM 12 Wyte started playing guitar when he was 12, and played in bands all through high school. He went on to college, majoring in aerospace engineering, which severely hampered his musical time. “It was really hard to go to school

full-time, work a part-time job and find a group of guys to be in a band with,” Wyte said. At the time, in the late 1990s, affordable recording software and equipment was difficult to come by. Wyte would record single drum tracks, then replay them and tape

A Toledo tradition since 2005 guitar parts over it. He said it was not the highest quality of recording, but it served a purpose. “It was sort of my way of keeping my creative side alive,” he said. Wyte later transferred to the University of Toledo, dropped the aerospace engineering major and tried to

Holiday Wishes 13 figure out what to move on to next. He took a music recording techniques class at UT, which lit a fire. “That was the first time that I’ve ever seen real recording software,” he said. “I thought if I could learn [it], I wouldn’t have to have a band anymore.” Wyte still wasn’t considering music as a career, but he ended up with a recording internship, and things took off from there. After working in radio, Wyte seized an opportunity to fully devote his time to sound engineering, and eventually his tracks made their way onto various television shows and film scores, including the 2009 Sandra Bullock movie “The Blind Side.” “I got to quit my factory job and do music professionally, which is awesome, because I get to work out of my house, and I get to hang out with my dog all day,” Wyte said. Wyte said he and his wife like to

do volunteer work when possible, so donating a song for “Holiday Wishes 3” was an easy decision. “It’s really a good way for me to contribute to Make-A-Wish,” he said. “Doing this is a really cool way to raise money for people who could actually use it.” Toledo Free Press Editor in Chief Michael S. Miller, who produces the CD series, said Wyte is invaluable to the projects. “I bring him four dozen tracks recorded from three dozen different sources, and he edits them, makes them sound uniform and protects the audio integrity of the artists’ visions,” Miller said. Wyte, who is a Toledo Free Press contributor, also offered some advice to those contemplating whether to buy the album. “Thinking hurts. Just buy it. Who doesn’t like Christmas music? You can’t have too much.” O

Forte Trio Boys harmonize for ‘Joy’ of holiday track By Holly Tuey

TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER news@toledofreepress.com

The Forte Trio Boys are only in seventh grade, but they hold their own against the more experienced musicians on “Holiday Wishes 3,” a CD to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Reed Gnepper, Henry Seifried and George Mancy have known each other since kindergarten. They all took voice lessons separately with Jim Stanton, owner of Forte School of Music and the Arts. Stanton grouped them together as a trio and they have been singing together for about a year and a half. On “Holiday Wishes 3,” the boys perform “Joy Medley” — a combination of “Joy to the World” and

“Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee,” arranged by Stanton. The boys think their three-part harmonies make their track stand out. “There’s all these different things going on at once,” Gnepper said. The Forte Trio Boys are accompanied by Stanton for their song. They said it only took them one take to record the song, even though it was their first time in a recording studio. Gnepper’s mother Colleen said the boys performed at ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital last year at Christmastime. “They were taken by their environment,” she said. The boys enjoyed bringing joy to sick children, so when they heard about the Make-A-Wish CD project, they

n

saw it as an opportunity to help more children and wanted to be a part of it. “We want to give the gift of our singing, and we hope they enjoy it and always encourage us on the way,” Seifried said.

Mancy said he wants anyone considering buying the CD to remember that it is for a good cause. And Gnepper added that they can listen to good music while supporting Make-A-Wish. The Forte Trio Boys have a busy

schedule coming up. They will perform the National Anthem at a University of Toledo basketball game and a Toledo Walleye game, and they’ll be performing at The Toledo Club’s Christmas tree unveiling Dec. 3. O

Make-A-Wish CD

By Danielle Stanton TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER news@toledofreepress.com

Jazz singer Brad McNett credits Christmas — his favorite holiday — as the reason he fell in love with music. “When I was a kid, my mom had a Christmas compilation with Harry Connick Jr. singing, ‘It Must’ve Been Ol’ Santa Claus.’ I played that over and over when I was a kid. When I got older, I said to my mom, ‘What was that song?’ … That’s how I got into ... music and jazz.” The 24-year old from Ypsilanti sings jazz standards and songs from the Great American Songbook, a canon of the most important and influential American popular songs of the 20th century. He volunteered his time and talent to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, crooning “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas” for the benefit CD “Holiday Wishes 3: If You Believe.” McNett has been singing for as long as he can remember and has sung professionally since graduating from Milan High School in 2007. He performs regularly in Detroit. He was turned on to the benefit CD project through Kay Elliott, executive director of the Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Society, who put him in touch with the CD’s producer Michael S. Miller, editor in chief of Toledo Free Press. “I just like to give back and help organizations who deserve it, especially Make-A-Wish,” McNett said. “It’s nice to be able to give back to something like that and do my small part.”

McNett croons ‘It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas’

n

Brad McNett will appear in Toledo on Dec. 18 for Jazz on the Maumee.

McNett called the recording process “great.” He recorded the song twice, keeping the second as the final cut. “It was nice. We’re happy with the recording,” McNett said. “The band

was happy to do it. I love Christmas music, so especially for me I was happy to be a part of it.” McNett said he hopes listeners are inspired by the CD.

“I hope [listeners] get into the giving spirit and Christmas spirit and [the CD] makes them want to support Make-A-Wish Foundation further than just buying the CD,” he said.

McNett will be in Toledo on Dec. 18 for Jazz on the Maumee at the Aqua Lounge. He has a six-song album, “Please Come Home for Christmas,” available for free online. O

Scott McGorty thanks God for kids on holiday CD TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER news@toledofreepress.com

At 22 years old, Scott McGorty is

one of the youngest contributors to “Holiday Wishes 3,” but what he lacks in experience, he makes up for with musical sense and enthusiasm. “I’m not really a huge musician,

but I’ve always been intrigued by the story you can tell with a song,” McGorty said. McGorty’s contribution to the Make-A-Wish benefit CD is an Oak

Ridge Boys cover, “Thank God For Kids.” He is a lifelong fan of the band’s Christmas offerings, and has seen them in concert numerous times. “It’s the first song I listen to every Christmas season. I have heard the song pretty much every year of my life,” McGorty said. “What [the song] is talking about is, without kids in the world, what would the world really be like? You know, there would be no Mickey Mouse, no Santa Claus. All that happiness wouldn’t be there.” McGorty recorded the song with Chuck Mauk in Perrysburg. It was recorded using a backing track, with Mauk’s wife, Mandy, providing backup vocals. McGorty was first turned on to music when he watched Disney’s “Mary Poppins” at age 3. He later was involved in theater and choir at Bowsher High School, and now does a lot of production work in theater, including Bowsher’s musicals. McGorty said “Holiday Wishes 3” means a lot to him, and that he actually knew someone who took part in Make-A-Wish when he was younger. “He had leukemia,” McGorty said. “He’s 24 or 25 now, but he went into remission when he was around 5, so I got to see a little bit of that, because we went to the same church.”

However, McGorty said he really got to see the profound effect MakeA-Wish has on kids while he was an entertainment intern at Walt Disney World, a common destination for Make-A-Wish children. “To see the excitement on those kids’ faces, to be a part of something and to get to experience something they never thought they’d get the chance to in their entire lives — to see that is indescribable,” McGorty said. “Being in the park, you see all kinds of families who are well-off or typical American families, but there are others you can tell have been through a lot. You can just see the joy in the kids’ eyes and in the parents’ hearts. “That’s the reason it was just a nobrainer to be a part of this project. I will never forget those experiences.” McGorty said he hopes listeners will take note of the lyrics, and really appreciate that there are some kids who need some happiness in their lives. “There are children, even here in Toledo and Northwest Ohio, who may not be living in the most ideal conditions or situations, and I hope that people listen to these lyrics and just love a child, and thank God they are there,” he said. “It is the perfect fit for this album. It is a song thanking God for kids.” O

MAKE-A-WISH CD

By Danielle Stanton

TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER news@toledofreepress.com

Country artist TJ Thomas said he hopes people remember their own family traditions as they listen to his song “Christmas Time in My Hometown,” which he recorded for the Make-A-Wish Foundation benefit CD. “I’m hoping [the song] takes them back to a good place and a good time at Christmas and brings back some good memories,” Thomas said. “If it makes them cry, it touched them.” Thomas wrote the song about 15 years ago reflecting on memories of his hometown of Manchester, Mich., where he sat around with family members eating his mom’s homemade pie and playing his favorite Christmas songs. “Mom made apple pie and we’d play music,” he said. “It brought everybody together. At that time of year people put some of the petty stuff aside and put a smile on.” Old and young alike can relate to the song, he said, which is the only Christmas song he has ever written. “I wanted this to come off as if we were sitting in a living room with family and friends — not a lot of hoopla,” he said. “There’s a line in the song about peace on Earth all year ’round and that’s a great thing to wish for and I think anybody who can celebrate

Christmas can relate to this song, whether it’s mom’s homemade pie or cookies.” Thomas said he talked to producer and Toledo Free Press writer Mighty Wyte, who told him about the benefit CD, and decided to donate his time and talents as a way to give back. “I love [giving back],” he said. “I lost my dad to cancer when he was 52. Any time I have a chance to help people out I want to do it. I just think it’s a great cause. I’m all on board.” Thomas said he doesn’t have a lot of money and his music — which he calls “strong medicine” — is one way he can help a sick child. “I’m not made of money and it’s the only way I know I can help,” he said. “When I was asked to do it, you don’t have to ask me twice — let’s get to it.” Thomas recorded “Christmas Time in my Hometown” with his band Kentucky Strait. He said the recording process took 20 minutes. “My piano and bass player went in in August and we spent maybe 20 minutes in there and did a track to make sure we got the sound right and cut it from there,” he said. Thomas was born in Findlay and grew up in Manchester. After graduating from high school in 1981, he hit the road, touring across the United States. After 35 years in the business, he now lives in Point Place and plays throughout Michigan and Ohio. O

MAKE-A-WISH CD

By Jay Hathaway

TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER news@toledofreepress.com

Sanctus Real, a Grammy-nominated Christian rock band from Toledo, offers a variation on one of the all-time great Christmas classics for “Holiday Wishes 3.” Drummer Mark Graalman said the Make-A-Wish benefit CD was a great opportunity to share “Silent Night,” a song they already had in the bag. “We recorded that song a little bit ago. I think it’s been a few years, actually,” Graalman said. “We had never recorded any Christmas tunes at that point, and the label wanted us to do one for a compilation.” As far as what song they would choose for their first Christmas offering, Graalman joked that the record label made it an easy choice. “If I remember correctly, I don’t [know] if we necessarily had a choice,” he said. “I think they assigned us a song, to be honest. But obviously, who doesn’t love Christmas music? We’re all big fans of it.” “Silent Night” is traditionally a slow, ambient piece, and Sanctus Real stayed true to that while making it their own. “It was kind of a nice challenge for us to do a song like that, because we’ve always been primarily a pop rock band. To take a beautiful Christmas song and make it ‘us’ somehow was a fun challenge,” Graalman said. He said that, as a faith-based band, recording Christmas music can be a spiritual experience. “For us to be a bunch of Christian guys in a band together, everything we’ve done musically has revolved around our faith, pretty much,” Graalman said. “It’s always been the mission of the band to express our life

experiences, but coming from a Christian worldview. “It always felt very fitting for us to be involved in doing Christmas songs and Christmas tours. Really, it’s a celebration of everything we believe in, so it’s pretty cool.” Sanctus Real just wrapped up a fall tour of more than 20 cities, and is now taking a couple of weeks off. The band will embark on a brief Christmas tour, including a Dec. 1 stop in Fremont, and then head home for the holidays. They will then head to Nashville in January to start working on a new record. While Graalman has never had any personal association with MakeA-Wish, he said it’s definitely a charity he can get behind. “Make-A-Wish is so amazing with what they are doing. I don’t know anybody who doesn’t love what they do. Actually, I was really excited to hear about it being a Make-A-Wish CD, because of the whole ‘Batkid’ thing recently.” Graalman was referring to a recent event in San Francisco, where 5-year-old Californian Miles Scott was able to live his dream of being Batman for the day, thanks to Make-A-Wish Foundation. Scott’s leukemia is now in remission. “They’ve brought a lot of joy and encouragement to a lot of families out there that have been through stuff that no one ever wants to go though,” Graalman said. “We love being a part of it. More than anything, it’s really just an honor to be part of such a project. It’s very humbling.” Graalman added that he hopes listeners enjoy all of the bands and performers on the CD, and that listeners not familiar with Sanctus Real will enjoy their contribution as well. “Maybe a new twist on a familiar song will turn some people on to the band, but either way, it’s pretty cool to be a part of it.” O

Winfree programs the ‘Funky Santa Robot’ TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER news@toledofreepress.com

Come in for Black Friday Savings!

Solo artist Winfree brought the funk to this year’s Make-A-Wish Foundation benefit CD with his orig-

inal track, “Funky Santa Robot.” Winfree is not new to the “Holiday Wishes” project; he recorded a song

for last year’s CD as part of a group called MixxtBreed. Winfree said that song was slow-paced, so this year he wanted to do something more uptempo and fun. “I was at a friend’s house where they got their baby a Santa Claus [toy] that would jump,” he explained. “I thought, ‘That would be so cool to see a Santa Claus doing the robot or some hip-hop dance.’ ... I just kind of created my own toy there, made this imaginary Santa Claus that would come to life for whoever purchased it.” Winfree has worked with international artists in France, Japan, Chile and elsewhere since the early 2000s. He has worked locally on production with hip-hop artists and his first solo CD, “My Diary,” was released in 2006. Working on “Funky Santa Robot” locally with co-writer Thomas Kurek was something he said he really enjoyed. “The energy you get when recording sometimes is just something that you can’t repeat,” he said. “With this particular song, it actually went very well. ... The energy was there, so I

had fun with that.” Winfree said he is happy to be a part of the Make-A-Wish benefit project, to contribute to raising money for a good cause. “It’s not so much about the song,” he said. “I think it’s just the whole idea of it, the reason why people would give of themselves — give their time, their gift — and use that to help somebody is the one thing I think is the important message for people to take from this: Give of yourself, because you never know when in life you may need something.” The charity has a personal resonance for Winfree. He said his mother was seriously ill before her death, but his family received support from others. “There were charities that helped us to take care of her and I’ll never forget that,” he said. “Through music I can obviously give back something, and it makes me feel good to be able to do that. I got this opportunity and it meant a lot to me to be able to do that.” Winfree is working on a new album, “No Negativity,” set for release early next year. O

A Toledo tradition since 2005 ToledoFreePress.com

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer news@toledofreepress.com

Fixed atop every piece of United States paper currency are the words: “Federal Reserve Note.” What is the Federal Reserve? To say that it is part of the federal government is correct. To say that it is a private corporation is also correct. In fact, to say that the Federal Reserve is a reclusive organization born of a secret meeting of government officials, financiers and a handful of the country’s leading businessmen on a private island off the coast of Georgia in 1913 is, once again, correct. As a quasi-governmental agency, a term political scientists use for an organization that holds governmental powers and responsibilities but has private sector control over its activities, the Federal Reserve (or “Fed”) is undoubtedly one of the least understood yet most influential entities in modern American government. In the documentary, “Money for Nothing: Inside the Federal Reserve,” director Jim Bruce seeks to educate viewers on what the Fed is, how it was formed, what it has done historically and where, in Bruce’s view, it continues to make mistakes. The film, which has been playing in select theaters across the nation since September, was released in anticipation of the Federal Reserve’s 100-year anniversary Dec. 26. Bruce has worked in the motion picture industry for 15 years and has worked as an editor on such films as “X-Men: The Last Stand,” 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” and “Pitch Black,” as well as two documentaries, “The King of Kong” and “Dambe: The Mali Project.” “Money for Nothing” marks Bruce’s debut in the director’s chair.

Making sense of finance

Bruce was first introduced to investing during the tech stock boom of the 1990s, and like many investors of the period he entered the market just a little too late. “I started investing in 1999, not realizing there was a bubble,” said Bruce. “The tech bubble really opened my eyes. Fortunately, I was able to come out a little bit ahead, and going into the 2000s I became very interested in making sense of finance. I noticed several of the economists I was reading at the time kept talking about a coming housing bubble.” Concerned about what loomed

on the economic horizon, Bruce started a newsletter in 2006 for his friends and family urging them to financially prepare themselves for a pending financial crisis. He encouraged them to become “value investors” by moving their money into safer stocks, and cautioned against owning multiple homes. Bruce shored up his investments throughout 2007 and 2008, managing to turn a small profit that he used to finance part of “Money for Nothing.” “The Fed started the first Quantitative Easing in 2007 to deal with the housing bubble, and to me it felt like, ‘Here we go again repeating the same policies we used in the 2000s to get us past the stock bubble,’” said Bruce. Quantitative easing is a type of monetary policy undertaken by a central bank that puts more money into circulation in an effort to stimulate lending and spending in an economy. In the United States, the Fed has undertaken three rounds of quantitative easing (QE1, QE2, and QE3) since 2007. “I don’t think the Fed has been held accountable for its role in creating the housing bubble. I wanted to tell that story. ‘Money for Nothing’ is about the Fed not learning from its mistakes in propping up financial markets.” Before filming could begin, Bruce founded Liberty Street Films and began raising money through donations and a Kickstarter campaign. “A lot of people have strong opinions about the Fed. A fair amount of people in finance, many of whom by the nature of their work benefit from Fed policies, know where this course of action leads. The most common thing I’ve heard is that this story needed to be told.”

What we like about this film is it’s educational. This topic is often immediately political — either ‘End the Fed’ or following the Fed totally. This film looks at what they’ve done right, where they’ve gone wrong, and what economists across the spectrum have to say.” n MONEY CONTINUES ON 25

n MONEY CONTINUED FROM 24 The focus of “Money for Nothing” is the Federal Reserve’s actions during the past few years, though the film does briefly explore the central bank’s creation. Founded from the bolstered political will to create a strong central bank following the Panic of 1907, the Federal Reserve was terribly ill-prepared for the severity of the Great Depression. “[Federal Reserve Chairman] Ben Bernake has said the Fed learned from the Great Depression when it raised interest rates and failed to supply money to banks, all to disastrous effect, but has it learned lessons from the recent past?” Bruce asked. According to Bruce, the infamous atmosphere of big risk that existed among bankers during the 2000s was the direct result of deregulation and a low interest rate monetary policy created under former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan’s tenure. “Money for Nothing,” which is narrated by actor Liev Schreiber, takes

a “critical yet educational” view of the Federal Reserve’s recent policies. “The Fed is not evil and trying to destroy the banking system, nor do its policies solely benefit the wealthy. That’s a misunderstanding,” Bruce said. “I think the Fed is made up of wellintentioned people, but they haven’t learned from the past.” Several of the sources interviewed in the film are current or former Federal Reserve officials including former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker and current Vice Chair Janet Yellen. Shooting a documentary is difficult as it is much harder to attract an audience for a film about a central bank than it is to get people to line up to see the latest superhero movie. The secretive history of the Federal Reserve, with its lack of primary footage, only compounded the problem. But with widespread public interest in its topic and a compelling cast of characters, “Money for Nothing” has been well received in movie theaters and

Business Link 25

A Toledo tradition since 2005 college campuses since its release. “There’s Alan Greenspan, this vocal free-market libertarian who is continually manipulating markets; he’s a fascinating study in contradiction. Then, there’s Ben Bernake, this kind of larger than life character who takes the helm of Titanic right as it’s hitting the iceberg,” said Bruce. “I think the Fed is a fun topic and it’s being received by new thinkers. To shift the conversation, we need to reach a new generation who looks at things differently.” Bruce’s goal for “Money for Nothing” is to bring average people into the Fed’s history, show them how it works and what role it plays in the everyday lives of the American people. “I think people need to be more educated about the Fed because the Fed should be held more accountable and the American people deserve better policies,” he said. Terms like monetary policy and quantitative easing can be intimidating for those without much of an economics background, but Bruce said he hopes that “Money for Nothing” will demystify what has been a confusing black box in American finance. “Recently, economics has become all mathematics, formulas and theories, but in reality it’s a social science. You don’t need complex economic training to have an opinion on this issue.” “Money for Nothing” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Maumee Indoor Theatre, 601 Conant St. The screening is free but tickets are required. FORFEITED LAND SALE — THIS NOTICE IS REQUIRED BY OHIO REVISED CODE SECTION 5723 Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Lucas County Courthouse. The lands, lots, and parts of lots, in the County of Lucas, forfeited to the state for the nonpayment of taxes, together with the taxes, assessments, charges, penalties, interest, and costs charged thereon, agreeably to law, and the dates which said lands, lots, and parts of lots will be offered for sale, are contained and described in the following lists. Notice is hereby given to all concerned, that if the taxes, assessments, charges, penalties, interest, and costs charged on said list are not paid into the county treasury, and the county treasurer’s receipt produced for the payment, before the respective dates mentioned in this notice for the sale, each tract, lot, and part of lot, so forfeited, on which taxes, assessments, charges, penalties, interest, and costs remain unpaid, will be offered for sale on the respective dates mentioned in this notice for said sale, at One Government Center in the county, in order to satisfy such taxes, assessments, penalties, interest, and costs, and that the sale will be adjourned from day to day until each tract, lot and part of lot specified in said list has been disposed of, or offered for sale. If the tract, lot, or part of lot so forfeited, is sold for an amount that is less than the amount of the delinquent taxes, assessments, charges, penalties, and interest against it, the court, in a separate order, may enter a deficiency judgment against the last owner of record of the tract, lot, or part of lot before its forfeiture to the state, for the amount of the difference, if that owner of record is a corporation, the court may enter the deficiency judgment against the stockholder holding a majority of the corporation’s stock. Notice is hereby given to all concerned, that the forfeited tracts, lots, and parts of lots that are offered for sale pursuant to this notice may be subject to a federal tax lien that may not be extinguished by the sale or are subject to the right of the United States to redeem any tract, lot, or part of a lot that is subject to a federal lien and purchasers of the forfeited tracts, lots, or parts of lots are urged to search the federal tax lien index that is kept by the county recorder to determine if notice of a federal tax lien has been filed with respect to any of the forfeited tracts, lots, or parts of lots. Further notice is hereby given that procedural defects informer judicial proceedings may prevent any purchaser herein from acquiring good title to such lands, lots, parts of lots and that a title company may not guarantee title in the purchaser. Lucas County Auditor Forfeited Land sale Please note changes in the Rules Revised October 2, 2013 1. All sales are final. All payments on day of sale are non-refundable deposits. 2. Individuals who are attending the Auditor’s Sale for the first time with the intent to purchase a property are advised to proceed with extreme caution. The law in Ohio relative to Real Estate is “Caveat Emptor”, which means “Buyer Beware”. If the purchaser obtains a property that is different than the one he or she intended to purchase, the purchaser is still obligated to purchase the property or forfeit a substantial amount of money. Notice: Many of the properties offered for sale have undesirable characteristics, which have prevented sale in the past. If you have not carefully researched the property and physically viewed it, you may wish to reconsider bidding on the property. It is expected that all purchasers have contacted a Real Estate Attorney and Title Company prior to bidding. 3. Minimum bid is $60.00. Bids of $300.00 or less must be paid in full the day of sale. Bids over $300.00 require a deposit of half (50%) of the bid price. All deposits, fees and paid in full parcels will be required to be paid immediately at the close of sale for each parcel. Additional charges for deed preparation, transfer fees, recording fees, and current postage which total $73.99 are in addition to the bid price, Ohio Revised code 5723.12(A). You must have your money with you at the time you are bidding. No one will be allowed to leave and return at a later time to pay their deposits. Remember– if you do not have your money with you, don’t bid. Each parcel must be paid for immediately at the close of sale for each parcel. No checks, credit or debit cards will be accepted. Deposits will be accepted in CASH ONLY. The deadline for final payment is ten (10) business days from date of sale. Final Payments may be made by cash, or money order in the County Auditor’s Office, 7th floor, in the Forfeited Land Department. No extension of time will be permitted. If payment is not made in full on the 10th day, the purchaser will forfeit any monies paid in, and the parcel will be offered to the back-up bidder for the same price. The back-up bidder will have ten (10) business days to pay in full or the property will be offered at our next scheduled sale. 4 The Auditor’s Office will only prepare a deed in the name of the successful bidder, unless a Bid Release Form is filed. The bid release form allows a citizen to bid for another taxpayer who is unable to attend the sale. If you plan on putting property in a company name, you must have a copy of the Articles of Incorporation on file in the Auditor’s Office, prior to the sale. If your name is not included on the Articles of Incorporation, you must have a written letter of authorization submitted prior to each Forfeited Land Sale. The purchaser does not become the owner until the deed is delivered to the County Recorder. This will be about two (2) weeks after the sale. You cannot enter the property, alter it, or

remove anything from the property until you are the owner, which is after the deed is recorded. Notice: entering the property without the permission of the owner(s) or occupant(s) is a violation of the Ohio Revised Code section 2911.21 punishable by up to 30 days in jail and/or a fine of $250.00. further, physically removing the property of the occupants without a court order, even after receiving the deed, may result in civil or criminal liability. 5. The Auditor reserves the right to require payment in full on day of sale for select parcels marked by asterisk (*). On such select parcels the full bid price must be paid by cash or certified funds within 30 minutes of time of sale. 6. Forfeited lands shall not be transferred to any person that is delinquent on real property taxes in this state. Consequently, all purchasers will be required to sign an affidavit of prior non-ownership and present valid identification. Any sale that is refused for this reason will result in a forfeit of all deposits and may be prosecuted. 7. The County Auditor cannot give any warranty of title. All sales are subject to Federal Tax Liens, if any. Parcels designated as In-Rem are sold subject to all prior liens. The County Auditor does not give any representation regarding possession, eviction, prior inspection, scheduled demolition, health code violation, or any other matter. Buyers are encouraged to investigate these matters prior to the sale. 8. Attendance will be limited by seating capacity on a first-come, first-serve basis. You must register and have a bid card to participate in the bidding (there is no fee to register). Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. Sales will commence at 10:00 a.m. 9. The auctioneer may increase the minimum bid increments at his discretion in order to keep the bid process moving quickly. Do not delay in making your bid. Sale is final at the strike of the gavel. All decisions of the auctioneer are final. Acceptance of your bid creates a contract between you and the County Auditor. The Lucas County Prosecutor may file a lawsuit for breach of contract if you fail to pay the full price. You may be prohibited from participating in future sales. Bidding on property with the intent to delay the sale or with the intention of not paying the bid price constitutes the crime of obstructing official business under O.R.C. 2921.31. Persons violating this section may be prosecuted. 10. Sales are conducted based solely upon the permanent parcel number of the property. The county does not use addresses for any purpose. The county is not responsible for inaccurate addresses provided in the county records. The county does not warrant or guarantee any information provided in the county records. 11. Unsold parcels will be re-offered for sale a second time immediately following the last sale item for that day. The Lucas County Auditor will publish a list of delinquent lands in the newspaper the weeks of December 8th and December 15th, 2013. This delinquent land list will contain the NAME OF OWNER, a description of the property and the total amount of taxes, assessments, recoupment charges, penalties, and interest due and unpaid at the settlement. Delinquent lands will be certified for foreclosure by the auditor pursuant to law, unless the taxes, assessments, interests, and penalties are paid.
