Solidarity

n Nov. 25, about 100 Jeep workers and supporters gathered outside One Government Center to express support for a proposed land purchase near the Jeep plant that city officials and union leaders hoped would woo Chrysler into keeping Wrangler production in Toledo. Wearing red shirts reading “Solidarity on Stickney,” they chanted and carried signs reading “Keep Jeep,” “This is Home” and “Sergio Promised.” Like the former Southwyck Mall site, the former Textileather site has potential but no committed end-user. Unlike the Southwyck purchase, however, which divided Toledo City Council and passed by a narrow 7-5 vote, the Textileather site elicited only one response: support. On Dec. 2, Council moved to purchase the property with a unanimous vote. Councilman Tom Waniewski, who was among those critical of the Southwyck purchase, calling it too expensive a gamble once The Andersons dropped out of consideration, said he supported the Textileather purchase. “With Jeep, we have a viable tenant already there that has been looking for more room,” Waniewski told Toledo Free Press Editor in Chief Thomas F. Pounds Sarah Ottney. “We have to be at the table to play with Chrysler. By not passing this land deal, we would have in essence taken our cards and said we’re done for the night. But with this land purchase at least we’re still at the table, we’re still playing with them ... and hopefully convince them this is still the best place to continue to build Wrangler.” Although the city is focused on Chrysler, City Development Director Matt Sapara told Ottney officials have also talked to other potential end-users with the goal being to land the biggest economic driver possible for the city. That would seem to be Chrysler. The company employs more than 6,000 people locally, not to mention those employed by local parts suppliers and other related businesses. “It matters where you make it and we make it better here than anywhere on this planet,” Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins told Council after the vote. That’s not just empty praise. Toledo’s assembly complex has submitted to productivity test after productivity test and continuously comes up on top, UAW Local 12 President Bruce Baumhower told Council last week. Toledo builds 240,000 Wranglers per year, working seven days a week, 20-24 hours a day, including holidays — the best production output in the world — and still can’t keep up with demand, he said. Between Cherokee and Wrangler, Toledo produced 50,000 vehicles in October, more than any other North American location has in years, he said. Despite all that, we still might lose Wrangler. But of course we never go down without a fight. Tuesday’s vote shows Chrysler this city is standing in solidarity with Jeep workers and Toledo’s long history with the brand. Although Chrysler has indicated it would build another vehicle in Toledo if it pulls Wrangler, the loss would be devastating, Baumhower told Council, pointing to Chrysler’s ambitious five-year plan of expanding Wrangler’s market globally. “Do we want to play in that sandbox that we built? That’s gonna get a whole lot bigger?” Baumhower asked Council on Nov. 25. “Hell yes, we do. That’s the one we want to build.” Yes, we do. Go big or go home. This is home. We’re going all in. Feeding your neighbor

I

n his First Letter in the Bible, the Apostle John writes that the new commandment, one which Jesus always taught his disciples, is to love one another in truth and action, not in word or speech, living this out as you give selflessly of yourselves to see that others in need are helped or — as in the case of Toledo Area Ministries’ (TAM) Feed Your Neighbor (FYN) program — fed. As FYN director, I see examples of this every day as our pantry coordinators and volunteers give selflessly of their time and abilities — sometimes up to 40 valuable hours a week filling the pantry shelves so others don’t go hungry. They drive their own vehicles around the city to pick up food. Then they store the food, stock the shelves and keep the pantry clean and welcoming. They help visitors select the best foods for their households from the pantry shelves, and then they help them out to the car with Donnajean it. They do endless paperwork. They net- STOCKMASTER work with other pantries and organizations to present the best, freshest and most nutritious foods to those in need — all for zero dollars in payment but endless gifts from the heart. I give thanks to God for them, always! TAM’s Feed Your Neighbor Program is celebrating 40 years of service to those in the Toledo area who are experiencing food insecurity — the approximately one in five Lucas County residents who are hungry and unsure of what, where or when their next meal will be. This may be a first time or singular experience, or a regular occurrence for families that have been accessing food pantries on a chronic, long-term basis. Most are unemployed, underemployed, disabled, seniors or military families. They visit the FYN pantry in their neighborhood on the day and time it’s open, once a month, to receive a generous three-day supply of food, enough for everyone in their household. We believe in “client choice.” Pantry volunteers help visitors “shop” the pantry shelves to make their own choice of the nutritious foods they like to eat and are able to prepare. FYN is a network of 13 food pantries throughout the Toledo area, including one in Ottawa Lake, Michigan, and the newest at Toledo Campus Ministries (TCM), a collaboration between FYN, TCM and the University of Toledo Center for Experiential Learning & Career Development. However, despite all our efforts, hunger in our neighborhoods is not going away. Last year, 68,450 people were helped by FYN. Our pantry coordinators all reported record numbers this past September and October. Serving this number of people is only possible through the generosity and compassion of our community. All of our pantries are run and staffed by volunteers. Each pantry is located in a church or community center that offers the space and utilities at no charge to FYN so that all of the money donated to FYN is spent on food. We rely very heavily on food drives, personal donations and all the food we can get either free or at minimal cost from local food banks — so heavily, in fact, that it only costs FYN approximately $1 per person for a three-day supply of food. How can you help? Stop by The Village Idiot in Maumee between 2-8 p.m. this Sunday, Dec. 7, to “Raise Some Cash.” Cost is $5 per person. Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit FYN’s Augsburg Lutheran Church Pantry. There will be lots of charity items, including local artwork, up for raffle and available for purchase plus some great local bands playing lots of Johnny Cash tunes. In case you can’t make it, the next best way is to donate money or food to Feed Your Neighbor. Send a check to: TAM Feed Your Neighbor Program, 3043 Monroe St., Toledo OH 43606. Or donate online at www. tamohio.org and be sure to designate it for FYN. Check out FYN’s website for information on pantry locations and schedules. We also put info about our upcoming food drives and fundraisers on the site and Facebook. Contact me for more information. Many thanks from our hearts for all the times you have donated to or even prayed for Feed Your Neighbor. Please keep it up! O Donnajean Stockmaster is program director for Feed Your Neighbor. A Toledo tradition since 2005 ToledoFreePress.com n OTTNEY CONTINUED FROM 3 Speakes: I don’t think so. I don’t think there’s been any — Kinsolving: Nobody knows? Speakes: There has been no personal experience here, Lester. That right there is the telling line for me. In other words, if it isn’t happening to me, it isn’t happening at all. I don’t quote this particular conversation to throw Speakes under the bus or cast aspersions on Reagan, but only to point out how easy it is to ignore or make light of something that doesn’t affect you or anyone you know. And how hard it is to stomach someone doing so when it does. Ohio Sen. Rob Portman reversed his stance on same-sex marriage last year when his then-21-year-old son came out as gay. Suddenly the issue was personal. Brian and Cindy Hoeflinger of Ottawa Hills became national advocates against teen drinking after their 18-year-old son was killed by a drunk driver — himself. It wasn’t that they didn’t care before. But suddenly the issue was personal. On Dec. 2, Toledo City Council voted 12-0 to amend language referring to sexual orientation in the city’s ordinance against hate crime to include “a person’s actual or perceived heterosexuality, bisexuality, homosexuality or gender identity, by orientation or practice.” Candice Milligan, a transgender woman who was attacked and robbed Downtown last month, was there. “It’s important to help people who live here, who are a member of this community, feel safe and also to send a message that hate crimes are not going to be tolerated here, that that kind of behavior isn’t going to be tolerated here and this is a place where that’s not welcome,” she told me after the vote. Toledo’s move is a step in the right direction, advocates said, but Ohio still doesn’t include sexual orientation in its hate crimes statute, which means it’s difficult to charge crimes allegedly motivated by sexual orientation as hate crimes. Asked by another reporter how she was doing, Milligan said that’s a difficult question. Speaking through her teeth, her broken jaw still wired shut, she said she’s “getting by.” It’s “back and forth,” she said. Mostly forth, I hope. She was also in court when one of her alleged attackers came before a judge. Her build is slight. But she’s clearly strong. “Keith” expressed a common sentiment when he posted a comment on that story online: “‘Hate Crime’ destroys equality in our judicial system. Yes, one more special group was added to the club, but it sends the message that certain people have more value than others. If a person attacks a transgender person as opposed to an elderly woman in a robbery, ITS THE SAME CRIME, but now the homosexuals are demanding more punishment than the

elderly woman who also could have been the victim in this example, which just makes the judgement less fair for the defendant. Or what if a homosexual attacks a heterosexual and the heterosexual in self defense injures the homosexual… was it a “hate crime”? The words ‘Hate Crime’ need to be removed from the equality that is intended in justice for all.” Keith and those who subscribe to this view misunderstand the very notion of hate crime. A crime against a person who happens to be transgender or black or Muslim doesn’t make it a hate crime. It’s a hate crime if the action is motivated primarily because of the person’s real or perceived sexual orientation, race, religion, etc. It is different. Two years ago, I talked to Ed Hoffman about the 35th anniversary of the Holiday With Heart Charity Gayla. Hoffman is one of the founders of the event, which has grown from a small gathering of friends to nonprofit status and an annual dinner-dance that raises thousands of dollars for local LGBT causes. This year’s event, which Toledo Free Press sponsors, is Dec. 7. Hoffman’s voice broke as he told me the Gayla is special because it’s a place where members of the LGBT commu-

nity can relax among those who accept and support them. “Unless you are in our community, you really don’t have a clue,” Hoffman said “Things you take for granted. You and your boyfriend or husband or whomever, you can dance slow all you want, nice and close and warm. We can’t. Unless we’re among our own. “You can feel comfortable there. You can hold hands together. You can kiss each other. You can dance. It’s wonderful to be able to dance with your partner, slowly, and not feel like who’s watching or feeling ill at ease.” No matter what your personal view on someone’s sexual orientation, race, religion or anything else, everyone has a right to feel safe and be treated equally. I wasn’t at the White House on Oct. 15, 1982. I wasn’t in Ferguson, Missouri, on Aug. 9. I wasn’t at 13th and Madison, Missouri, on Nov. 3. I will probably never truly understand what it’s like to live as an AIDS patient, a black man or transgender woman. But it’s our job as fellow citizens, as human beings, to try. With a unanimous vote approving the purchase of 28.8 acres of land near Jeep’s Toledo Assembly Complex, Toledo City Council hopes it dealt city leaders another round at the table with Chrysler and a fighting chance to keep Wrangler production in Toledo. Council voted 12-0 during its Dec. 2 meeting to buy the former Textileather property for $738,000. Local officials have been in talks with the auto company about Wrangler’s future in Toledo since Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne’s surprise comments during an interview at the Paris Auto Show in October that Wranglers may move from Toledo if the model switched to an aluminum unibody design. Toledo’s plant is set up for steel body-on-frame production. Shutting the plant down for six months to retool for aluminum would be too costly, as the plant already can’t keep up with demand for Wranglers even working nearly around the clock, UAW Local 12 President Bruce Baumhower told Council during an agenda review session Nov. 25. That session

was attended by more than 100 Jeep workers wearing red “Solidarity on Stickney” shirts. “This whole problem we’re facing has been caused by their phenomenal success,” he said. “They can’t shut that plant down for one minute. “Yes, there’s some risk in saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to buy this land and we don’t have a commitment from Chrysler.’ But you’ve got to weigh that against if we don’t do this, it’s game over. It’s gone,” Baumhower said. “Now what we’re saying is, ‘Let’s give him something to think about.’” Discussions so far have been about replacing Wrangler with another Chrysler model, Baumhower said. “There’s been no conversation about keeping Wrangler in Toledo because there was no scenario where it would work — until today,” he said after the vote. “This puts us back in the game and allows us to have some future dialogue with the corporation about keeping Wrangler here in Toledo.” Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins praised the decision. “It matters where you make it and we make it better here than anywhere on this planet,” Collins said. n JEEP CONTINUES ON 7

n JEEP CONTINUED FROM 6 The next step is closing on the property, which the city anticipates by mid-December, said Matt Sapara, the city’s director of business and economic development. The cost of environmental remediation at the site, expected to start early next year, has been estimated at $1.2 million. A carcinogen, PCB,

had been found in the soil and the Ohio and U.S. Environmental Protection Agencies are both involved in cleanup plans, he said. The site’s current owner, Textileather, will provide $1.75 million to cover the job. “It’s a little bit of a challenge for us, but I think we put ourselves in the best position we could possibly be in by acquiring the land and giving

Community

A Toledo tradition since 2005 Chrysler more options and more flexibility,” Sapara said. “It shows Chrysler we have a really united front from Council to the mayor to our elected officials. It’s really a team effort to put together something that will get their attention and I think we’re there.” The Textileather site along with the 4.1-acre former MedCorp property the city acquired in October plus

a few other smaller parcels would bring the city’s total acreage in the area to 70, Sapara said. The city has talked with Chrysler as well as several other potential endusers, he said. “Obviously Chrysler is our No. 1 and the end-user we’re hoping for, but my goal is to get the biggest economic impact for the community out of the disposition of that property, whoever that end-user happens to be,” he said. A new meeting date with Chrysler has not been set, Sapara said, but the city is hoping to meet before the end of the year. Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson declined to comment. Councilman Tom Waniewski, who was critical of Council’s 7-5 vote last month to purchase the former Southwyck Mall site, said he was in support of the Textileather purchase. “With Jeep, we have a viable tenant already there that has been looking for more room, so it’s not like we have no players there,” Waniewski

said. “The Southwyck property — once The Andersons dropped out of that, I thought, ‘We’re gonna end up holding the bag again.’ “We have to be at the table to play with Chrysler. By not passing this land deal, we would have in essence taken our cards and said we’re done for the night. But with this land purchase at least we’re still at the table, we’re still playing with them ... and hopefully convince them that’s still the best place to continue to build Wrangler.” It wouldn’t only be Jeep workers affected if Wrangler left. Parts suppliers and Toledo’s economy in general would also be impacted, Baumhower said. Frank Rao of Toledo, who works in the stock department on Toledo’s Jeep Cherokee line, came out to the rally last week to support his co-workers on the Wrangler line. “I think it’s important we all stick together as one voice,” Rao said. “Cherokee and Wrangler, we’re all one big family. It would be a hit to everyone if we lost the Wrangler.” O

Kenny Hetrick has cared for large exotic animals at his Tiger Ridge Exotics compound near Stony Ridge for 40 years, and not once has one of his animals escaped or harmed someone, he said during a recent interview. Hetrick prides himself on his safety record, but the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) sees it differently. The ODA recently inspected Hetrick’s property after sending him a letter giving him 10 days to either comply with a state regulation to obtain a permit or hand over his animals. Hetrick was in violation of a state law passed in 2012 that regulates the exotic animal industry. The law was signed after a 2011 incident near Zanesville in which dozens of exotic animals were shot and killed by law enforcement after being released by their owner. The letter to Hetrick set off a flurry of news articles, a Facebook page in support of saving Hetrick’s animals and action by the ODA to get Hetrick into compliance. However, at least two exotic animal experts have accused Hetrick of drag-

ging his feet and not accepting help when it was offered. They called him “stubborn,” a man who loves his animals, but who can’t care for them anymore. Hetrick refutes that. Hetrick has had two years to come into compliance with the law, but he said the permit process is expensive, and he’s “not a millionaire.” But thanks to donations by several hundred of Hetrick’s friends, he was able to submit the permit application with the $1,000 fee. He also made upgrades to his compound as required by state regulators, which included new fencing, spaying or neutering and microchipping the animals and paying a $500,000 insurance fee. “Everything they required, I did,” Hetrick said. “So what’s next? What’s next, I have no clue.” The ODA remains tight-lipped about its findings at Tiger Ridge. Erica Hawkins, ODA communications director, would not comment on the inspection results or whether Hetrick would be approved or denied a permit. “We don’t have a final report yet from the [inspection],” she said Dec. 3. “We’re reviewing the legal status of Mr. Hetrick’s animal permit.” n EXOTIC CONTINUES ON 9

Hetrick calls Tiger Ridge a safe haven for his animals, many of which he’s had for 40 years. The compound at 5359 Fremont Pike in Perrysburg houses six tigers and a black leopard, which are considered endangered animals, as well as two lions, a Kodiak brown bear, a liger, a bobcat and a wolf hybrid. Andrew Schuman, a Bowling Green attorney representing Hetrick, said his client has been licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for “years and years” (since 1987, according to Hetrick) and has always been in compliance. However, there are no federal regulations for exotic animals. The state law was considered necessary in response to the release of dozens of bears, big cats, wolves and primates by their owner, Terry Thompson, near Zanesville in 2011. Thompson committed suicide afterward. Most of those animals were killed by law enforcement. The new legislation, S.B. 310, made it illegal to buy, sell or trade exotic animals and to own many of

them. Those who possessed the animals before Jan. 1, 2014, are allowed to get a permit to keep them. Tiger Ridge is not exempt from the law because it is not an accredited sanctuary with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. So far, the ODA has issued permits to more than 60 owners. Hawkins said the ODA’s demands for compliance are basic requirements, nothing a responsible animal owner wouldn’t want for his or her compound. Tim Harrison of Outreach for Animals is a former police officer and former owner of exotic animals who now trains first responders in how to handle them. He said he offered to donate fencing to Hetrick when he was having difficulties finding the money to HARRISON upgrade his facility. But Hetrick said no, Harrison said, leading him to believe Hetrick was just a stubborn person, not interested in doing what was right for the animals. “We have been trying to help him for years,” said Harrison, who operates out of Dayton. Bobbi Brink with Lions, Tigers & Bears, an animal rescue and sanctuary in California, said she also ran up against Hetrick’s alleged stubbornness when she offered to take his animals for him when he ran afoul of the new law. She said Hetrick flat out refused, saying, “If I can’t have my animals, then no one can have them.” “I believe the state is going to take action,” Brink said. “In all honesty, for us here, we’re going to be dealing with him now or later. With private owners, they don’t want to give up, but they run out of food, cages break down, so they finally figure out they can’t provide for the animals.” Hetrick denied those claims, and said he has plenty of friends who helped him out of his jam. Hetrick has said he only wants to care for the animals, most of which are old, until they die. He is not rescuing any new animals. “Most people who do what I do don’t let people on their property,” Hetrick said. “I’ve always been open (to the public) since day one. Never a day goes by that someone’s not here. There’s nothing to hide. I don’t advertise, and there’s no fee. I have a donation box. I don’t make a penny. This is what I like, this is what I do. “I’m not real sure what they’re (ODA) going to come up with, but whatever they want me to do, I’m going to do it, and I have 1,200 friends who will help me. They’ve been helping me all along.” O

Toledo strengthens hate crime law to include transgender people By Sarah Ottney

Toledo Free Press Editor in Chief sottney@toledofreepress.com

Toledo City Council recently approved new language to strengthen the city’s existing hate crime law, adding language that clarifies and expands the section related to sexual orientation. The former ordinance, Toledo Municipal Code Section 554.06, read: “‘Intimidation’ under this section means committing a specified crime against an individual, or group, exclusively or in part, because of that victim’s race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, handicap, age or sexual orientation.” In the new ordinance, Toledo Municipal Code Chapter 555, the word “intimidation” is replaced by “hate crime” and the phrase “sexual orientation” is replaced by a broader description: “a person’s actual or perceived heterosexuality, bisexuality, homosexuality or gender identity, by orientation or practice.” The updated language, passed by a 12-0 vote during City Council’s Dec. 2 meeting, comes after the robbery and assault of transgender woman Candice Milligan in Downtown Toledo last month. Milligan, whose broken jaw is still wired shut, attended the meeting and said she was happy with the vote. “I was here to make sure the hate crimes ordinance passed as it should have been,” Milligan said. “It’s important to help people who live here who are a member of this community feel safe and also to send a message that hate crimes are not going to be tolerated here, that that kind of behavior isn’t going to be tolerated here and this is a place where that’s not welcome.” Milligan told police she heard homophobic and transphobic comments before being attacked by three men near 13th Street and Madison Avenue at 2:50 p.m. Nov. 3. One suspect, Christopher Temple, has been charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault. He has pleaded not guilty and has a trial set for later this month. The other two alleged attackers have not been identified. City Law Director Adam Loukx said the city wanted to flesh out the language “just to be clear.” “Our prior ordinance on the books was not as complete in terms of definition,” Loukx said. “This clarifies the ordinance and tightens it up. Just to make sure, we wanted to make sure we spelled it out very clearly.” However, the city’s ordinance af-

fects only offenses up to first-degree misdemeanors, such as traffic violations and nuisance housing violations, not felonies, such as Milligan’s assault, Loukx said. Felonies are charged under state law, which does not include sexual orientation or gender identity in its hate crime statute. “To the extent where a situation may arise where a misdemeanor is the level of offence, it’s certainly a valuable tool in enforcement and would allow the city to treat it with the maximum degree of seriousness,” Loukx said. David Crafts, executive director of EqualityToledo, applauded the effort, but said more work is needed. “It’s a good positive step,” Crafts said. “EqualityToledo is very impressed with the speed that City Council, especially Councilman Jack

Ford, approached the topic and got some changes made. “I appreciate the clear delineation between sexual orientation and gender identity, which are two very different things and many people continue to lump them into the same category. I’m also excited they’ve changed the verbiage to include the word hate crime, because we know many crimes are motivated by hate.” Crafts said many hate crimes go unreported by the victim out of fear. He said EqualityToledo is interested in talking to Toledo Police about establishing a liaison to the LGBT community to “continue to make inroads toward social justice.” “It’s something we have started to put our feelers out there for and are hoping they will be receptive,” he said. Girl Scout cookies to be sold online — but not in Northwest Ohio

Yes, Girl Scout cookies will now be available to order online — but not in Northwest Ohio. Eighty-nine of the 112 Girl Scout councils in the U.S. are participating in the new Digital Cookie program, according to the Girl Scouts website.

However, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, which encompasses 32 counties in western Ohio and southeast Indiana, including Lucas County, opted out of participating this year, said communications and marketing manager Amanda Aldrich.

“While Digital Cookie represents an exciting enhancement of the iconic Girl Scout Cookie Program, the virtual sales platform that launches in the 2014– 2015 cookie season is simply phase one of what will become a much broader and more robust program, and Girl

Scouts of Western Ohio is not among the councils participating in this initial phase of the program,” Aldrich wrote in an email to Toledo Free Press. Digital Cookie offers two sales platforms: via email, which invites users to visit a personalized cookie website to order online, or via in-person orders using a mobile app that allows for credit card processing and direct shipping. Among regional councils offering digital sales are Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan and Girl Scouts of North East Ohio. Northwest Ohioans who know a

Girl Scout from a council participating in online sales can receive an emailed invitation from that scout and have their cookies shipped for a fee. For safety reasons, online sales are only available via invitation, according to the Girl Scouts website. As with traditional cookie sales, funds raised from online cookie sales will stay with the local council operating the sale. Digital sales start in mid-December and traditional sales start mid-January. For more information, visit girlscouts.org. O — Staff Reports

TOLEDO FREE PRESS ASSOCIATE EDITOR tkonecny@toledofreepress.com

Faced with the staggering statistic that 60,000 Lucas County residents over age 25 do not have a high school diploma or equivalent degree, Cherry Street Mission Ministries and Penta Career Center have teamed up to try to lower that number. Cherry Street Mission, headquartered on 17th Street in Downtown Toledo, purchased the former Macomber High School on Monroe Street in 2013 and has spent the past year readying it to become its new Life Revitalization Center. Now through a collaboration with Penta Career Center, it offers GED and ABLE (Advocates for Basic Legal Equality) services at the location. Classes started Dec. 1 with 15-20 in attendance. “We know how to transform and stabilize lives, and we know how to stay with them and bring them to the fullness of healing,” said Dan Rogers, president and CEO of Cherry Street Mission. “Conversely, we don’t have any idea how to vocationally train, so the partnership of holistically reaching someone under the same roof is key. Every time you move somebody or ask them to move, that creates a barrier. One-roof systems are just key.” Also in the works is a potential expansion of Toledo Public Schools’ (TPS) adult education programs, the first step in a series of moves the Cherry Street Mission hopes will eventually make Macomber a fullblown residential vocational and career center. There has also been talk from TPS of a reborn Macomber concept nearby that would bring vocational training back to high school students. A Dec. 4 ribbon cutting was attended by several local dignitaries, including Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins, validating Rogers’ assertion that this new partnership is “a top five economic development story for our region.” Penta Superintendent Ron Matter believes that with this new affiliation, further adult training coming soon, and a possible new Macomber High School, this particular area is primed for good things. “What a corridor that could be to have adult options, and to get this

up and running with the other programs,” Matter said. “This really could be quite a hub.” Rogers said the former DeVilbiss High School currently offers adult training and is in early discussions with TPS about those programs potentially moving to the new Macomber site, in an effort to consolidate efforts all under one roof. Both Cherry Street Mission and Penta expect their efforts will increase access to those who are experiencing homelessness and poverty. “It’s amazing how things come together with just a conversation,” Matter said. “We struck up a conversation with Dan (Rogers). He explained how he wanted to revitalize Macomber High School and it all fell into place.” Matter said Cherry Street Mission clients remain their initial priority, but soon they want to open it up to all area residents. “It’s something that’s very exciting and going to be a big piece of the City of Toledo,” Matter said. “Partnering with Cherry Street to help others lift themselves up, that’s good stuff to be involved with.” Cherry Street Mission has steadily been making behind-the-scenes renovations to the Macomber property as funds became available. The property has a new parking lot, roof and heating system. Work has also been done in sections of the building, such as the auto shop, to repair their own fleet and practice how things might look if vocational services were to return to the 76-year-old structure that closed its doors to high school students in 1991. The University of Toledo donated classroom furniture to aid the cause. “We’re looking for other partners to get on board with us to get these services on the old Macomber site,” Matter said. “It has such a rich tradition at Macomber. It just makes too much sense.” Founded in 1947, Cherry Street Mission Ministries serves 900 meals a day and provides shelter and programming to more than 250 people every night. It is privately funded and does not receive government funding. Penta Career Center is a vocational public high school and adult education center in northern Wood County serving 16 school districts in Fulton, Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky and Wood counties. O

Lucas County sues City of Toledo for $1.3 million in jail costs By Danielle Stanton

The Lucas County Commissioners filed a lawsuit Dec. 2 against the City of Toledo for a breach of contract for

services at the county jail. The lawsuit, filed in Lucas County Common Pleas Court, demands payment of a fourth-quarter 2014 debt of $1.3 million the county says the city owes for inmates booked into the jail by Toledo Police.

“It’s not a palatable option,” said Carol Contrada, president of the Lucas County Commissioners. “We have a longstanding partnership [with the city] on a number of issues that are important to this region and we need to resolve these differences

and move forward. But when one party in the contract breaches the contract sometimes you’re forced to take legal action. But we will continue to work with the city.” As part of a budget-cutting strategy, Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins decided in October to have inmates booked under state law rather than city municipal code. The shift is expected to save the city $4 million, while costing the county the same amount. The county could also face an additional $5 million in costs for city inmates transported and housed at the regional jail near Stryker in Williams County due to overcrowding issues at Lucas County’s jail. “We have a contract for services, but the contract trumps the revision to Ohio code,” Contrada said. “Those are contract services which we continue to provide.”

The city has offered to pay the county $516,123 for the fourth quarter, according to an Oct. 23 letter from Collins’ Chief of Staff Robert Reinbolt, which stated the city’s obligation is “not defined in any valid contract” and feels that amount is “equitable and reasonable” for the services provided. But the county’s complaint states it agreed to offer pretrial/presentence services for the city for $865,071 annually, booking and custody services for $2.9 million annually, 35 reserved pretrial beds for $1.083 million annually and work release supervision services for $550,000 annually. All those fees are less than actual costs, the complaint states. City Law Director Adam Loukx declined to comment, except to say, “We have a copy of the filing and will defend it and take appropriate actions to defend the city’s interest.” O

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer vkroll@toledofreepress.com

Anyone who has slid behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang, revved up the thundering engine and felt the thrill of being thrown back in the bucket seat when accelerating knows the power of the pony. “Holiday Horsepower” is a small part of Holidays at the Manor House at Wildwood Preserve Metropark running Dec. 6-14 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free. All you’ll want to do, as Wilson Pickett sang on the 1966 hit, is ride around; Sally is optional. It’s been 50 years since Mustangmania first galloped across America. Coupes, ragtop convertibles, fastbacks, GTs, Cobras and Shelbys have rumbled down the road over the years. That silver steed gleaming on the grille first caught my attention at age 4 when a neighbor drove home her new blue beauty. Shortly after that, Santa brought me my own Mustang; it was orange and came in a Hot Wheels set. Fast-forward to when I took the reins of a new pony car. My 2011 Mustang has a 305-horsepower, 3.7liter V6 engine and is a smooth, sweet ride. The auto with the iconic logo continues to captivate me — and car fans everywhere. Thoroughly smitten, I wanted to pay tribute to that lifelong love as the stylish legend celebrates its 50th anniversary. How perfect that 2014 is the

Year of the Horse, according to the Chinese zodiac. So, giddyup and take a gander! Mustang décor and more will be parked in the Manor House’s basement appropriately by the iron horse aka the train display. Other themes featured in the Georgia Colonial mansion include Peanuts, “A Christmas Story,” “Star Wars,” Elf on the Shelf, sock monkeys, owls and ugly Christmas sweaters. This is the 39th year for the event, which draws 15,000-18,000 visitors annually and is made possible by more than 500 volunteers, according to Angela Metcalf, program production specialist with the Metroparks of Toledo Area. “I think people come back every year for that sense of home that we create in the Manor House and the inspiration to kick off their holiday season and to bring the holidays into their own home,” Metcalf said. Visitors are asked to add to that warmth by bringing mittens, gloves, hats and scarves to decorate a tree in the basement. Everything on the mitten tree will be donated to Toledo Public Schools and given to children in need, Metcalf said. The holiday café and craft show will take place in the nearby Metroparks Hall and a minibus will circle the park to give visitors a lift from the parking lots to the Manor House. The Manor House is located at Wildwood Preserve Metropark, 5100 W. Central Ave. O

Making BG Memories

By Matt Liasse

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer mliasse@toledofreepress.com

Former Bowling Green State University roommates Ryan Fowler and Kevin Goldner have turned being proud alumni into a profession. On Sept. 13, they launched BG Memories, an online store of BGSU apparel. The company was founded in response to the lack of apparel options for alumni no longer living in the area. Fowler and Goldner, who currently live in the Cincinnati area, discovered the demand for BG apparel outside Northwest Ohio was higher than the supply. Now, BG Memories makes it easier for anyone in the United States to purchase Falcon memorabilia. “What we realized in the last month is that alumni have been craving [opportunities] to buy not only merchandise, but one-of-a-kind designs,” Fowler said. The online store will conjure familiar memories for any BGSU alumnus; Designs include Brathaus, Campus Quarters, Myles’ Pizza and The Battle for the Peace Pipe. Fowler said his fondest memories

BG Memories partnered with Campus Polleyes to create a T-shirt with the restaurant’s logo. These designs are featured in The Memory Collection, created with the culture of Bowling Green in mind. The store features two other collections, Fanwear and Vintage, which use of-

The biggest response has been for hockey apparel, including a shirt commemorating BGSU’s 1984 NCAA National Championship, Fowler said. The website is currently offering Tshirts, long-sleeve shirts and hoodies. Prices range from $25-48. For more information, visit bowlinggreen memories.com. O

Residents, Swancreek Twp. trustees voice concern over pipeline By Don Lee

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer donlee@donleecartoons.com

A group of Swanton-area residents opposed to a planned natural gas pipeline found a receptive audience in the Swancreek Township trustees. Though the trustees stopped short of issuing a resolution against the pipeline, they expressed frustration at their Dec. 1 meeting at getting information from officials planning the NEXUS Gas Transmission project. Trustee Pamela Moore said she has been asking for information since Nov. 11 from Mark Wagoner, the Toledo lawyer representing NEXUS locally, but she said he suggested meeting privately. Moore told the audience of about 30 people at the trustee meeting she did not want a meeting that was not public.

A resolution may be proposed for a vote at the start of the township’s annual budget meeting on Dec. 8 at the township hall, 5565 County Road D in Delta. Though she said she was likely to side with local property owners, Moore said she wanted to “do my due diligence” before formally opposing the project. Wagoner, responding to a phone message, referred all questions to NEXUS spokesman Arthur Diestel. Diestel, responding by e-mail to a series of questions, pointed out NEXUS hosted nine informational meetings along the study corridor for affected landowners and is conducting an economic impact study with Ohio State University, which it plans to share with local officials. The project is in its early stages and “there will be multiple other opportunities ... for impacted landowners and stakeholders

to ... identify any potential concerns stemming from the project,” he said. He also said eminent domain, the process by which a government can take private property for the public good after fair compensation, would be a “last resort” and not a negotiating

A trailer Awakens

Two fans discuss whether ‘Star Wars’ teaser is worth getting excited about. has a crossguard. Otherwise, it’s just a bunch of quick cuts of images that are vaguely “Star Wars,” accompanied by star@toledofreepress.com the iconic theme. Frankly, it felt like a EFF: Never before has so much pretty lazy teaser to me. Yet the reacbeen written, with so much in- tion was over the moon. What are fans depth analysis, of so little actual going so crazy for? JIM: Because “Star Wars” is “back,” content. When it was revealed that the upcoming “Star Wars” sequel I’d say. Another friend said it was like — “The Force Awakens” — would JJ Abrams & Co. saying, “Don’t worry. see its first teaser trailer released in a We’ve got this,” and I have to say I handful of theaters over Thanksgiving pretty much agree with that. Maybe weekend, fans the world over salivated some people forget that we’re a little at the news. When the trailer was re- more than a year out from the film’s leased online on Nov. 28, the reaction release, and that this is only a teaser to was swift and rapturous. It seemed whet the appetite. A little historical perspective: that every “Star Wars” enthusiast the world over was thrilled with what they When I saw the very first “Star Wars” saw, and couldn’t wait to tell everyone teaser trailer in January of ’77, I gleaned little to no story or plot from else all about it. Strange, given how the trailer it- it. It was a jumble of images that I let self really offered no information at wash over me, and began to speculate all about the plot, characters or much over. — who knew? Flash forward to now. Same thing: a bright burst of “Star Wars” and I’m a kid again. I’ll be honest with you. I just went with it and allowed my gut to tell me what to think. And I thought it was pretty cool. The real trailer will come eventually and we’ll get some idea of the story. I’m not worried about it. For now, I’m assured that Abrams & Co. are delivering a “Star Wars” film that echoes the past and delivers the future, and that feels pretty good. JEFF: But are fans setting themselves up for a great fall? I remember the overwhelming excitement that accompanied the early trailers for “Episode I,” and the general response to the film itself was significantly more muted. As you said, you filled in most of the excitement and ideas yourself when you were a kid, and that same excitement fills you now. But considering how little you were given, it feels like you — and many fans — are doing

the heavy lifting yourselves. Yes, this is a teaser trailer, and the film is still over a year away. But that hasn’t stopped fans the world over from praising this snippet of footage as proof that Abrams has a firm grasp on the universe he has inherited. But there’s really no concrete evidence either way, based upon what we have seen. Trailers convinced me Abrams would deliver a great “Star Trek” experience, too, and in my opinion, he went 0-for-2 there. I’m not saying “The Force Awakens” WON’T be a great “Star Wars” movie. I’m just approaching this with caution — as a fan who has been burned before by trailers that offered considerably more meat to chew on than this one. JIM: I totally get what you’re saying, but my gut — my sensitivity to the Force, if you will — tells me that they’re at least heading in the right direction. And yes, “Star Wars”

fans, like most all other genre fans, can be their own worst enemy. With this teaser, I can really only speak for myself when I say that I don’t think I’m kidding myself by being optimistic for the film. From what we know and what we’ve seen, it appears as if they’re trying to be all-inclusive: diversity in casting, mystery in action, humor, dark fantasy, sly wrinkles on existing “Star Wars” iconography — it’s all there in the teaser, which I see as being carefully thought out. In some ways, it’s fairly masterful, because it sends a message without giving much away. It provides excitement, and despite some grumblings and the typical naysaying, as well as a few nuggets of mind-boggling racism over the casting John Boyega, the excitement seems heartfelt to this “Star Wars” fan. Maybe the supposed wounds over the prequels are healing. O

Pumpernickel’s Deli eyes return to Old West End By Joel Sensenig

Toledo Free Press Managing Editor jsensenig@toledofreepress.com

The owner of a former Old West End deli is bringing the sandwich shop back after a 10-year absence. Noticing a lack of eateries in the neighborhood, Dennis Lange opened Pumpernickel’s Deli & Café in 1995 at 2499 Collingwood Blvd., which is now the home of Black Kite Coffee. After a 10-year run at the sandwich shop known for its hearty sandwiches and homemade soups, Lange sold the business when he had an opportunity to work for Lucas County. Within several months of the sale, the business had closed. Now the semi-retired Lange is bringing Pumpernickel’s Deli back to the neighborhood, working on renovations to 2489 Collingwood Blvd., two doors down from Black Kite. He hopes to open the lunch establishment in mid-January. “There’s still a need,” Lange said when explaining his return to the dining scene. “I’ve had so many people say, ‘I wish you were still open.’ After a while, I got to thinking, ‘Maybe this could be my retirement project now.’” Lange previously ran another

business in the same building, a Victorian tea room. “The money I spent there 15 years ago is still there,” he said. “It just needed a good sprucing up.” Lange has a clear vision of what Pumpernickel’s strengths were in the past and what he sees them being in the future. “I’m not a huge foo-foo food person,” he said. “Everybody’s trying to make something that’s different for everybody. I’m looking at the person who says to me, ‘Gosh, I just want a good corned beef sandwich’ or ‘I just want a good Reuben.’ … So many of the new places people go in and you see the plate and it’s like, ‘Where’s the food?’ I want to give them a good hearty lunch, a salad that’s got something in it and a soup that’s got a lot of hearty and healthy things in it also.” The deli will cater to its customers’ individual tastes, Lange said. They can customize their sandwiches with a choice of breads, cheeses and toppings. “You tell me what you want on it, that’s what’s going to be on it,” he said. “It’s quite an extensive menu, but yet it’s a lot of the same ingredients just put together differently.”

It’s no coincidence Lange is returning to the Old West End for Pumpernickel’s second go-around. “I hope the neighborhood and community come back to support us,” he said. “It’s going to be great to see folks I haven’t seen in a long time

and be able to serve them again. … We’re hoping we can bring in some new business to the area, so we can help grow the area again. Over the last 8-10 years, the business community there has taken quite a hit. We’re hoping this is going to spark

Shineology juice, raw food shop now open Downtown After months of delays, Downtown juice and raw food shop Shineology has finally opened at 130 10th St. at Jefferson Avenue. Originally set to open in July, the shop ran into some permit problems with the city’s building inspection department. Shineology hosted a soft opening at the end of November. Open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday

through Friday, Shineology offers 13 different juices, depending on the season. The juices are prepared daily and sold for $7 in 13-ounce glass bottles. Current seasonal juices include Sweet Dreamz, a blend of sweet potato, pineapple, carrot and apple; as well as Rocket Berry Bliss, which contains organic pomegranate, cranberry and honey crisp apple.

In addition to juices, the shop offers three different cleanse programs available in one-, three-, five- or seven-day plans, with each day costing $43. A 48-hour advance notice is required for the cleanses. Each day includes six bottles of vegetable and fruit juices and one bottle of vanilla bean nut milk. “We make everything daily and absolutely

fresh,” said owner Ashima Rae. “It’s as fresh as it gets. … We want to keep it as fresh and alive as possible.” For more information, visit shineologyjuice. com or on Facebook, call (419) 386-1059 or email ashimarae@gmail.com. O — Joel Sensenig

CARLSON’S CRITTERS

A home for Clementine

Clementine is the perfect companion. She came into the shelter as a stray, but has adapted very well to the housecat lifestyle. Clementine is about 1 year old and is an Orange Tiger cat. Orange female cats are very rare, so Clementine must be something special. She is very laid-back and is not needy. If you just give her a sunny spot to lay she will be content for hours. Clementine is

spayed, up to date on her vaccinations and is microchipped. Toledo Area Humane Society is located at 1920 Indian Wood Circle, Arrowhead Park, Maumee. Adoption hours are noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Call (419) 891-0705 or visit www. toledoareahumanesociety.org. O

The law in Ohio relative to Real Estate is “Caveat Emptor”, which means “BUYER BEWARE ”. If the purchaser obtains a property that is different than the one he or she intended to purchase, the purchaser is still obligated to purchase the property or forfeit a substantial amount of money. NOTICE: Many of the properties offered for sale have undesirable characteristics, which have prevented sale in the past. If you have not carefully researched the property and physically viewed it, you may wish to reconsider bidding on the property. It is expected that all purchasers have contacted a Real Estate Attorney and Title Company prior to bidding. 4. ORC (Ohio Revised Code) 5721.16 states Parcels shall be sold for not less than the lesser of (1) fair market value, or (2) the total amount of taxes etc. found by the court in foreclosure action. Bids of $300.00 or less must be paid in full the day of sale. Bids over $300.00 require a deposit of half (50%) of the bid price. All deposits, fees and paid in full parcels will be required to be paid immediately at the close of sale for each parcel. Additional charges for deed preparation, transfer fees, recording fees, and current postage which total $74.00 are in addition to the bid price, Ohio Revised code 5723.12(A). YOU MUST have your money with you at the time you are bidding. NO ONE will be allowed to leave and return at a later time to pay their deposits. REMEMBER – if you do not have your money with you, don’t bid. Each parcel must be paid for immediately at the close of sale for each parcel. No checks, credit or debit cards will be accepted. Deposits will be accepted in CASH ONLY.

THE DEADLINE FOR FINAL PAYMENT IS TEN (10) BUSINESS DAYS FROM DATE OF SALE. Final Payments may be made by cash, or money order in the County Auditor’s Office, 7th floor, in the Forfeited Land Department. No extension of time will be permitted. If payment is not made in full on the 10th day, the purchaser will forfeit any monies paid in, and the parcel will be offered to the back-up bidder for the same price. The back-up bidder will have ten (10) business days to pay in full or the property will be offered at our next scheduled sale. 5. The Auditor’s Office will only prepare a deed in the name of the successful bidder, unless a Bid Release Form is filed. The bid release form allows a citizen to bid for another taxpayer who is unable to attend the sale. If you plan on putting property in a company name, you must have a copy of the Articles of Incorporation on file in the Auditor’s Office, prior to the sale. If your name is not included on the Articles of Incorporation, you must have a written letter of authorization submitted prior to each Forfeited Land Sale. The purchaser does not become the owner until the deed is delivered to the County Recorder. This will be about two (2) weeks after the sale. You cannot enter the property, alter it, or remove anything from the property until you are the owner, which is after the deed is recorded. NOTICE: ENTERING THE PROPERTY WITHOUT PERMISSION OF OWNER(S) OR OCCUPANT(S) IS A VIOLATION OF OHIO REVISED CODE SECTION 2911.21 PUNISHABLE BY UP TO 30 DAYS IN JAIL AND/OR A FINE OF $250.00. FURTHER, PHYSICALLY REMOVING THE PROPERTY OF THE OCCUPANTS WITHOUT A COURT ORDER, EVEN AFTER RECEIVING THE DEED, MAY RESULT IN CIVIL OR CRIMINAL LIABILITY. 6. The Auditor reserves the right to require payment in full on day of sale for select parcels marked by asterisk (*). On such select parcels the full bid price must be paid by cash or certified funds within 30 minutes of time of sale. 7. Forfeited Lands shall not be transferred to any person that is delinquent on real property taxes in this state. Consequently, all purchasers will be required to sign an affidavit of prior non-ownership and present valid identification. Any sale that is refused for this reason will result in a forfeit of all deposits and may be prosecuted. 8. The County Auditor cannot give any warranty of title. All sales are subject to Federal Tax Liens, if any. Parcels designated as IN REM are sold subject to all prior liens. The County Auditor does not give any representation regarding possession, eviction, prior inspection, scheduled demolition, health code violation, or any other matter. Buyers are encouraged to investigate these matters prior to the sale. 9. Attendance will be limited by seating capacity on a first-come, first-serve basis. You must register and have a bid card to participate in the bidding (there is no fee to register). Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. Sales will commence at 10:00 a.m. 10. The auctioneer may increase the minimum bid increments at his discretion in order to keep the bid process moving quickly. Do not delay in making your bid. Sale is final at the strike of the gavel. All decisions of the auctioneer are final. Acceptance of your bid creates a contract between you and the County Auditor. The Lucas County Prosecutor may file a lawsuit for breach of contract if you fail to pay the full price. You may be prohibited from participating in future sales. Bidding on property with the intent to delay the sale or with the intention of not paying the bid price constitutes the crime of obstructing official business under O.R.C. 2921.31. Persons violating this section may be prosecuted. 11. Sales are conducted based solely upon the permanent parcel number of the property. The county does not use addresses for any purpose. The county is not responsible for inaccurate addresses provided in the county records. The county does not warrant or guarantee any information provided in the county records. Sincerely,

Anita Lopez
