DON LEE

The new cabinet T

oledo Mayor-elect D. Michael Collins announced the names of his proposed cabinet members Dec. 16. It is a list of familiar names — some too familiar — with a mix of new talent. The top of his list does not require City Council approval. As a followthrough to his promise to foster mentoring, Collins has paired former Carty Finkbeiner Chief of Staff Robert Reinbolt (returning as chief of staff) with Joel Mazur, from the City of Toledo’s Division of Environmental Services, as assistant chief of staff. Reinbolt first worked for the city in 1980. No one questions his experience, but it will be interesting to see how the dynamic with his younger assistant will play out as Toledo faces 2014’s challenges. We are proud to continue to chronicle the rise of Lisa Renee Ward. The former operator of the city’s best political blog, Glass City Jungle, worked as an editor with Toledo Free Press before making the leap to One Government Center as a legislative aide to City Council. She has been named Thomas F. Pounds an executive assistant to Collins and his public information officer. We have great faith in her insight, contextual knowledge of Toledo politics and sense of fairness. We’re saying an extra prayer for you, Lisa. We are pleased with two specific appointments. Matt Sapara of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority, will join the administration as director of business and economic development. Sapara was chief operating officer and director of development for the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority and COLLINS the business community should be supportive of his appointment. We are also in sync with the appointment of Toledo City Councilman George Sarantou, who served 11 years as the chairman of Council’s Finance Committee, as director of finance. We have consistently endorsed and supported Sarantou and have confidence in his stewardship of public funds. Law Director Adam Loukx, Fire Chief Luis Santiago, Inspection Director Chris Zervos, Health Department Commissioner Dr. David Grossman and Plan Commission Director Tom Lemon will remain in their positions. We wish Collins and his staff the best of luck as they forge their new team and try to keep Toledo moving. There is demonstrable momentum at stake, and we want to see this new administration build on that. Opinion

n MILLER CONTINUED FROM 3 The coverage, particularly in the opinion pages, has been … well, let’s take a look and you can decide. From “Public assets shouldn’t be sold like junk” by columnist Keith Burris, published Nov. 18, almost three weeks before the Treece marketability study — not their overall plan, mind you, just the marketability study — was published Dec. 6: “When I asked former Mayor Carty Finkbeiner what he thought of the proposed private takeover of Toledo Express Airport, he had a good one-word answer: ‘Outrageous.’ I’m with Carty.” “So what is Mr. Treece and his company putting on the table? Nothing. And that’s what the city should give back to him: nothing; a dead phone line; no serious consideration at all.” “… this deal has no meat; no center; no substance.” “The phrase ‘pig in a poke’ was invented for this deal.” “I think this deal is dead but, just to be safe, let’s drive a stake through its heart.” That seems like a lot of derision and rejection of a proposal that had not (and really still hasn’t) been detailed yet. Maybe it got better for the Treeces in Burris’ Dec. 9 column, “Treece boys not ready for prime time,” which was published just days after the release of the marketability study. “I am trying to come up with the right comparison for the Treece Boys … Mini Madoffs? Music men, as in Prof. Harold Hill of The Music Man? He said you could learn to play music by thinking about it. Dick Cheney, George W. Bush, and their neo-conservative foreign policy advisers? They developed the definitive mix of arrogance and ignorance in our time.” “They strike me as little big men. Would-be rainmakers.” “They are wannabe movers and shakers — wheeler-dealers who cannot wheel and will not deal.” “The Treeces are low on information, humility, and allies, but long on bluster. They are getting their name brand out there but they come off looking more like play actors than players.” Well, maybe it didn’t get better. I support criticism as long as it is informed criticism, but Burris’ approach here seems to be ready, fire, aim. Then fire again. Then burn down the target. Then piss on the ashes. I do not regularly read Burris’ column so I have no idea if this is typical of his work. I did notice during the mayoral election that The Blade tried to buy and artificially force Burris’ relevance through a cascade of billboards and full-page ads, rather than trust him to earn an audience organically; I can only speculate if that is a reflection of his employers’ lack of confidence in his ability to gain readers.

December 22, 2013

A Toledo tradition since 2005 ToledoFreePress.com Blade Editor Dave Kushma took his swing at the Treece piñata Dec. 8, also just days after the marketability study was posted, in “Toledo’s renewal needs more than a Michigan roll.” “After conducting back-channel communications with the Bell administration since last spring, the Treeces are dribbling out some details of their proposal on a Web site,” Kushma wrote. It sure would be embarrassing to The Blade and Kushma if it were revealed that the daily newspaper was in any way also included in those “backchannel communications” as far back as April, wouldn’t it? Dock David wrote to me Dec. 16: “In the spring of 2013, before deciding to move forward with a proposal to privatize the operations of Toledo Express and Toledo Executive, we asked a member of the Blade’s staff to speak with John Block about our idea and to inquire whether it was a concept John would oppose. In early May we were told that John had no reaction and it was suggested that we move forward, as the Blade’s publisher wouldn’t take a stand one way or another.” How’s that for back channels? “[The Treeces] recruited toadies in local media who are happy to play ball,” Kushma continued. Kushma doesn’t have the courage to name those he disparages as “toadies” but I doubt he is referring to his current allies at 13abc. “At The Blade, news coverage and editorial opinion are, always have been, and always will be utterly separate functions; one does not influence the other,” Kushma wrote. If lies make baby Jesus cry, that whopper is going to result in the Little Drummer Boy standing up to his waist in Kleenex. Maybe Kushma and Burris do not know how close they and the Treeces were to being co-workers, as The Blade has tried a number of times to get the advisers to move their column from Toledo Free Press to The Blade. According to Dock David, who has mentioned that to me a few times and wrote in a Dec. 16 email, “We have been casually approached a number of times over the past several years by different people within The Blade’s organization about writing for The Blade instead of the Toledo Free Press. We were asked most recently when meeting with an intermediary whom we asked to inquire whether John would oppose our airport proposal.” At least Kushma and Burris put their names on their opinions. These barbs come from an unsigned Dec. 1 Blade editorial, “Air piracy,” published before the marketability study was released. “a flimsy plan” “The potential rewards don’t justify the real public risk.”

“The Treece family cites as its main business managing about $40 million for its investment clients — relative chump change in the world of bigtime money management.” “The airport scheme ... What the rest of the region would get from their privatization — and wealthtransfer — scheme is far less clear.” Emphasis on “scheme” is mine. “Mr. Bell, the outgoing mayor, could and should have stopped this nonsense when it first emerged, but he didn’t. Now it’s up to Mr. [Mayorelect D. Michael] Collins and City Council to make clear that Toledo Express is a valuable public asset that will not be given away to fly-bynight private control.” Why such vehement animosity, not just to the idea, but to the Treeces personally? Dock has said that it stems from a personal clash between him and a Blade editor from long ago. The romantic in me likes to imagine a high-stakes poker game gone wrong, a sword duel for a woman’s hand or a double-cross of some great import. Whatever it was, it must have been a monumental event in someone’s life for the rancor to be carried for so long.

Vestigial power

But Blade opposition does not equal defeat. The Blade these days is like the Bumble from “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” It may once have been fierce and sharp-fanged, but now its power is largely a vestige of reputation as it blunders around, toothless and confused, wandering closer and closer to the cliff. Remember how strongly The Blade fought the fates of the old United Way building and the Seneca County Courthouse? I have bricks in my office that show how those fights ended. Remember how The Blade opposed Hollywood Casino Toledo? Did it support the merger of the University of Toledo and the Medical College of Ohio? Perhaps we will one day look back and add the airport privatization battle to the growing list of Blade defeats.

with such premature hostility (ask Penn National Gaming, Rave Cinemas and Dashing Pacific), it is no wonder Toledo languishes in limbo. It’s not easy to stand up when you know someone is ready to cut you off at the knees. O Michael S. Test for Collins

This is a serious test for incoming Mayor Collins. Will he remain openminded and facilitate a conversation, or will he let Blade rhetoric and bluster close a door that should at least be inspected before it is bricked over? It’s not an enviable place for Collins to be: Capitulate to a media hissy fit and risk a potential game-changing deal or remain cooperative with this business proposal and risk a poison pen in Pittsburgh. Welcome to the office, Mike. Many people in economic development wish more local investors with private money would come forward to help Toledo grow. That is a sentiment Toledo Free Press has strongly echoed. But when those who do are treated

Just noting for the record: In his Dec. 15 column, Blade ombudsman Jack Lessenberry, discussing Burris’ column on the Treeces, said, “Well, your ombudsman agrees those comparisons are strong stuff — but the beauty of the First Amendment — the foundation of our right of freedom of speech — is that columnists are allowed to express their opinions, no matter how outrageous they seem to be. … That’s what freedom of the press is all about.”

Notre Dame Academy student April Varner will sing at New York City’s CarnEgie Hall on Dec. 22.

Notre Dame student to sing at Carnegie Hall By Danielle Stanton

TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER news@toledofreepress.com

Sixteen-year-old April Varner, a junior at Notre Dame Academy (NDA), is looking forward to adding Carnegie Hall to her resume. The lifelong vocalist will sing at the New York City venue Dec. 22. “I'm very excited,” Varner said. “It should be really fun, especially during Christmastime when everything is decorated.” Varner was chosen to perform at the prestigious Manhattan concert hall as part of the fall 2013 American Protégé International Music Talent Competition. Her taped audition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Misérables” and

“If I loved You” from “Carousel” was chosen as a first-place winner from applicants from around the world. Winners will perform in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. Varner, who will be the 30th out of 34 performances, will sing “I Dreamed a Dream.” She will be accompanied by a pianist from the Manhattan School of Music. “It will definitely be a great experience,” Varner said. “My dream is to get to Broadway. To say I performed [at Carnegie Hall] is good. And you never know who is going to be in the audience.” She’s a little nervous, she said, but has been performing since she was very young. “I was 3 years old in the bathtub singing and my parents were outside the door listening,” she said. “I

kind of taught myself.” She listened to the choir in church and tried to imitate them, she said. Her family knew she was born to sing when Varner belted out Disney movie tunes while the family ate at a Fricker’s restaurant, she said. “We’re extremely proud,” said Varner’s mother, Diane. “She watched all the Disney movies and memorized all the princess songs. We were taking her to church and she watched the choir and … she was 4 and she said, ‘I want to do that.’ “It's an amazing opportunity,” Diane said. “We were just really surprised and are so excited about going [to Carnegie Hall]. I never imagined 10 years ago when she started performing that we would be where we are today.” Varner and her parents will fly to New York City on Dec. 20, staying for

a Dec. 21 rehearsal and the recital the following day. The family may catch a showing of “The Phantom of the Opera,” which April has never seen, her mother said. Varner most recently performed at another famous venue, the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn., with an all-national ensemble. At NDA, Varner is a part of an a cappella ensemble and has performed in the school’s fall musical for the past three years. She also played Fantine in St. Francis de Sales’ spring production of “Les Misérables” and was a cast member in the school’s 2012 production of “Guys and Dolls.” She is a member of Notre Dame’s dance and speech teams. She is also a member of the choir at Christ the

King Church, where she is a cantor. Varner plans to major in vocal performance in college. Her school of choice is the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. Legendary musicians who have performed at the prestigious Carnegie Hall include Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Judy Garland, Ike and Tina Turner, Glenn Miller, The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Stevie Ray Vaughn. The concert hall has 3,671 seats in three auditoriums. It was designed by architect William B. Tuthill and built by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1891. The hall was the longtime home of the New York Philharmonic until that orchestra moved to Lincoln Center in the 1960s. O

in June at Hansen Hall of Christ Presbyterian Church and emceed by Toledo Free Press Editor in Chief Michael S. Miller. It can be seen as a way for fans of the band’s classic style to celebrate its legacy and thank the group for decades of wonderful memories. But also, Jerry hopes, it

will provide new fans with the first of many wonderful memories to come. “It really started out, I realized there was a lot of memories of the orchestra’s 53 years, for most of the orchestra and for the audience,” Knorr said. “And I chose to title the concert at Christ Presbyterian Church ‘Thanks for the Memory.’ And some of the unique things about that was there are several families that we’ve played for three generations of the family —for their parties, weddings, anniversaries and special events. “And also, there’s a family of musicians that we’ve had three generations of the musicians play in the band. And while we’re on the threes, I guess I should mention I’m a third-generation musician, myself — not just my father, but my grandfather played piano for the silent movies.” But there are challenges for any group over time, especially a group with more than a half-century of history behind it, especially in an era where that thrilling big-band sound seems — superficially, at least — to be out of style. Early in 2013, Jerry Knorr found himself, and his family’s legacy, at a crossroads. For decades, a tradition for the Johnny Knorr Orchestra had been its big New Year’s Eve gala. “In recent years, due in part to the economy, and the fact that people were just not going out as much as they used to, crowds started to dwindle somewhat,” said Michael Shaw, owner of American Restrospects, a company that specializes in multimedia presentations of classic material. “I was having lunch with Jerry Knorr, I guess it was this past spring, and he had announced to me that he had decided not to have the annual gala,” Shaw said. “And I understood why — I mean, it was a lot of work, and it was costing money rather than making a few dollars. So, I suggested to him to put together a television show that might even reach a broader audience. So he concurred with that, and over a period of a couple months, the idea began to develop.” “It was just becoming where, financially, it wasn’t ... feasible to do it anymore,” Knorr said of the gala. “And so Michael thought that this program would be good to air on television on New Year’s Eve in place of the gala that we normally did.” Knorr said for the dozen musicians and two singers who make up the orchestra, the energy present during the recording at Christ Presbyterian was tremendous — but then, performing in front of an audience always is. “It’s always exciting performing for a live audience and getting the live

response,” he noted. “That’s always an exciting and enthusiastic time. ... Whenever there’s the live audience, that’s when it’s most enjoyable, in creating an energy with the musicians.” Jerry has had a lifetime of experience preparing for such moments. Ever since he took over the orchestra that bears his father’s name, the younger Knorr has led the group with a smooth confidence and style that lets JERRY KNORR you know he is his father’s son. But he admits he has always felt a pressure associated with the position — a position he was groomed for from a young age by a father who was very, very painstaking about how his son learned music. “Dad was a very particular taskmaster, and was very particular about things. And he made resources available to me, but was very specific on how they were utilized and how I tried to understand them,” Knorr said. “He was a difficult person to please in that respect, and it made it hard for me. But in hindsight, it has all been better.” His father’s firm guidance extended into Jerry’s first days as the Johnny Knorr Orchestra’s new bandleader. “Really, I started leading the orchestra, five, six years ago, when Dad was physically not capable of fronting the band. He still played in the band, so his eye was right there upon me, to see that things were done in the proper fashion. And so it was a heavy weight to do things the way he wanted or expected them to be done. “So by the time he was no longer being able to be a part of the band, I was pretty well groomed into his philosophies and his way of doing things.” So as the Johnny Knorr Orchestra takes the airwaves on New Year’s Eve — in celebration of memories old and new — the guidance of its namesake and founder will still be very much in evidence. But it will be his son holding the baton and leading the group into a new year — and maybe, into the sight of a new generation of fans. “Some of the musicians will sometimes think, ‘Well, we’re playing the same things time after time.’ But I believe it was Tony Bennett one time that was asked, [why] he does do the same concerts with very little change. And he says, ‘When you have something that’s good, don’t change it.’” O

ENTREPRENEURS

By Kevin Moore

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer news@toledofreepress.com

Toledo has a strong attachment to hockey. Since the Toledo Mercurys first took the ice in 1947, the city has hosted six hockey franchises. A glance at the banners hanging from the rafters in the Huntington Center will reveal that Toledo’s various hockey team incarnations have produced a number of champions. For Toledoans who grew up in the ’70s or early ’80s, the Toledo Goaldiggers, a franchise from 1974-86, represent a nostalgic and successful era for Toledo hockey. The team had six appearances in the International Hockey League finals and four championship titles. David B. Hamilton, a longtime hockey fan, can remember enthusiastically watching the Goaldiggers as a teenager. This summer, he founded Toledo Retro Hockey, a vintage sports apparel company and digital photo archive as a way to honor Toledo’s hockey history, particularly the Goaldigger era. “I had been thinking about starting a sports apparel line for a long time,”

said the corporate salesman-turnedentrepreneur. “But I wasn’t sure what that would be until the holidays last year. I wanted to see if I could find any Goaldigger apparel and discovered that aside from a few items for sale on eBay, there wasn’t much out there.” Hamilton spent the next several weeks conducting online research to locate the owner of the Goaldiggers’ trademark, Classic Sports Logo of Garland, Texas, and in February he began negotiations for licensing. When the two parties reached an agreement nearly three months later, Hamilton set himself the task of finding vendors and designers who could not only create quality sports apparel on par with NHL or college athletic clothing (facilitated by SP Apparel of Québec) but also accurately reproduce the team’s vintage artwork. “One of the biggest challenges with this was design,” said Hamilton. “Everything was hand-cut back then. They didn’t have PDFs. But now everything is produced digitally so I hired a graphic artist to re-create the Goaldigger artwork in the various formats I needed.” n HOCKEY CONTINUES ON 9

n HOCKEY CONTINUED FROM 8 Hamilton’s initial vision for Toledo Retro Hockey was to only sell Goaldigger T-shirts and hoodies, but he quickly realized there was strong enough interest in vintage hockey to branch into other areas of merchandise like hats, replica jerseys and souvenir pucks. “I was a little surprised with the reception. I wondered if

anyone would remember the Goaldiggers,” said Hamilton, who created a Facebook page for Toledo Retro Hockey on July 4 and activated the company’s website a month later. “But there are Toledo hockey fans all over the place! Toledo Retro Hockey currently has over 1,300 fans on Facebook, and I’ve sent orders to 16 states all the way from Maine to Alaska.”

A Toledo tradition since 2005 Now that he is able to wear the Goaldigger apparel he was unable to find online last Christmas, Hamilton receives several comments when wearing his merchandise in public. “When I started my firsthand market research, I found that people over 40 would notice what I was wearing, stop and say, ‘Wow! That’s old.’ Those under 40 typically just walked right by. But

as the number of fans on Facebook grows, I see the demographic is getting younger and younger. Young people are taking an interest in retro hockey, and bringing this vintage brand into the 21st century was one of my goals.” The “second prong” of Hamilton’s plan for Toledo Retro Hockey was to preserve Toledo’s hockey heritage for the next generation as well as for those who lived it. Toledo Retro Hockey’s website contains a historical photo collection of the Toledo Goaldiggers as well as the Toledo Blades and Toledo Hornets. Many of the images have been provided by vintage hockey collectors from across the country and even former players. Also featured prominently on the site’s homepage is an excerpt of the documentary “Toledo Hockey History,” courtesy of WGTE. Featured in the short clip are the “Miracle on Main Street,” when 10,000 fans crowded Toledo’s streets following the Goaldiggers’

9

unexpected 1975 championship win, and an interview with Mike Eruzione, who, after leaving the Goaldiggers, went on to play for the victorious 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team. Looking ahead to 2014 and beyond, Hamilton hopes to grow the website’s digital history collection. He would also like to expand Toledo Retro Hockey’s merchandise selection to include Toledo’s other historic hockey franchises and possibly open a bricks-and-mortar storefront. Hamilton believes there is enough interest in Toledo’s vintage hockey for him to do so. “Toledo is a blue-collar town with long winters,” he said. “We’re used to a ‘rock ‘em, sock ‘em’ style of physical hockey. It’s what we’re used to, we love it and it’s here to stay.” For more information about Toledo Retro Hockey, visit www.facebook.com/ToledoRetroHockey or www.toledoretrohockey.com. O

With help from a Toledo-area group, a young Haitian agricultural expert is starting a small model farm in his home country that he hopes will transform the land and the lives of his fellow Haitians. “Some people say I’m crazy because the vision is big and they think I’m not going to get there. Yeah, I’m crazy, but I have a reason to show you why I’m crazy,” 28-year-old Frantz Dorcel Ady said. In a meeting earlier this month at Toledo’s Seagate Foodbank, Ady said he has been offered well-paying jobs in Canada and the United States but is going back to Haiti because he feels it is something “God wants me to do.” He returned to Les Cayes, Haiti, two weeks ago and is buying seedlings to get the model farm started. “I have a relationship with God and I just want to follow his way. I don’t care what will happen in the future as long as I am going in the way he wants me to go,” Ady said.

He said he was orphaned at age 2 when his parents were murdered, and was raised by his grandmother and his aunt who sacrificed so that he could get an education. He graduated from the American University of the Caribbean in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and earned a master’s degree in environmental science from the University of Moncton in Canada in 2013. He also received an internship with The Ohio State University at Metrolina Greenhouses in North Carolina. Ady founded two organizations, Heart for a Better World and Planting for Hope and Future in Haiti, and his work caught the eye of Toledoan Kathy Radcliffe while she was on a mission trip to Haiti in 2008. “I thought, ‘Whoa! Who is this guy?’ He’s amazing. Very humble,” she said. “He has a lot of ideas that, because he is Haitian, he knows what’s going to work and what isn’t going to work. And he knows it quickly. And his heart is for his people.” n HAITI CONTINUES ON 11

n HAITI CONTINUED FROM 10 Radcliffe was so impressed with Ady’s efforts in Haiti that she founded the nonprofit group Harvesting 4 Haiti Foundation, based in Perrysburg. The charity raises funds to support the work of Ady’s Haitian projects. Ady said it is “ridiculous” that so many Haitian farmers are unable to grow enough crops to even feed their families, and his goal is to help them become productive farmers. “These people are working hard and they are creating things out of nothing to survive. And they are good workers. But because of lack of opportunity, they cannot be selfsustaining,” he said. He is starting with a leased onehectare plot, equal to 2.47 acres, with a stream running through it. One important part of the model farm will be to show people how to use water from the stream to irrigate the land. Ady said most Haitian farmers have enough fertile land and water to be self-sustaining but they lack the technology and know-how to put the resources to use. “It’s going to be about irrigation,” he said. “We are going to teach people how to farm, and not the old stuff that they’ve been doing. We

want them to be more productive. We’re going to use the resources that are available at these communities. They just need help putting the pieces together.” Among the crops he plans to grow are plantains, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, corn, watermelon, squash and lima beans. “We have to find a way to move forward,” Ady said. “There will be challenges on the way, but I’m ready for them.” Once the struggling Haitian farmers see the fruits of Ady’s efforts, and with some technological help to irrigate their land, he is convinced they will change their ways and adopt the new methods that will make their farms sustainable. “We want to stay there forever,” Ady said. “The vision is not just for us. The vision is for generation to generation. God has given me the vision; I just need to pass it on.” For more information, contact the Harvesting 4 Haiti Foundation, P.O. Box 887, Perrysburg, OH 43551. Legends Football League team relocating to Toledo Toledo’s Huntington Center will be the new home of a Legends Football League (LFL) team. The league announced Dec. 17 that its Cleveland Crush franchise will move to Toledo. The women’s 7-on-7 tackle football league, which started in 2009, was formerly known as the Lingerie Football League. Players wear helmets, shoulder pads and cleats — but little else. League founder and chairman Mitchell Mortaza is enthusiastic about the move, and said Toledo will be a good location for the team. “Cleveland is an incredible sports town and the [Quicken Loans] Arena is one of the finest arenas in the country. While it was an incredible combination for us, it simply did not fit within our business model moving forward,” Mortaza said in a news release. “Toledo and specifically the Huntington Center is an incredible setting for LFL Football and it also provides proximity to draw athletes, coaches and fans not only from Toledo but Cleveland and Detroit as well.” The team will be called the Cleveland Crush of Toledo, according to

We look forward to a successful relationship with the LFL,” Miller

Louis Cullum and his mother, Deb, of Perrysburg, entered the Toledo Farmers’ Market Chili Cookoff last month with Aunt Deb’s Triple Threat Sauce. When the pair took first place against Tony Packo’s, it was the beginning of a new small business that is looking for success. “Tony Packo’s is well-known for their sauce and other businesses in the area, too, and we respect them as small businesses,” said Louis, president of the company. Their product, he said, “was voted by Toledo customers and it felt good as a new business.” Aunt Deb’s Triple Threat Sauce is a family recipe. Deb worked at a restaurant for almost 40 years. She learned how to make the sauce from the owners and added her own variation to the recipe. At another restaurant that closed about five years ago, the hot dogs didn’t sell well, but with Deb’s sauce, they sold out. “I left the restaurant, but I made the sauce as a favor,” Deb said. She was asked to keep making the sauce and said it sold out every time. The Cullums decided to start selling the sauce because customers have given good feedback and kept asking for it. Aunt Deb’s Triple Threat Sauce is frozen, not canned.

“Sauces taste good at restaurants, but when they’re canned, there are added preservatives and it takes away the flavor,” Louis said. The product is made by Tank’s Meats of Elmore using Deb’s recipe and she asked them not to can it. The sauce can last up to eight months when it’s frozen. “If you add kidney beans and tomato sauce, it makes good chili or chili mac,” Louis said. They keep track of how much is sold and ask that the stores let customers give feedback. Louis said he hopes that Aunt Deb’s Triple Threat Sauce spreads worldwide, but for now, the plan is to stay in the Toledo area. The Cullums would like to sell their product at a booth in the Toledo Farmers’ Market in spring. In the meantime, they will keep sampling, talking to people and meeting with them. He is grateful for the support they have received from small businesses. “It means a lot that stores are taking us in,” he said. “Without my son, who does the selling and the hard labor,” Deb said, “it probably wouldn’t have gone anywhere.” Aunt Deb’s Triple Threat Sauce is sold at Sautter’s Markets in Waterville and Sylvania, Kazmaier’s Market in Perrysburg, Schorling’s 5-Star Market on Bancroft Street and Erie Food Market on Galena Street. The product is also available at Monnette’s Market

said they carry Aunt Deb’s Triple Threat Sauce because “It’s a good product and we had a demo first. There was customer support and they liked it. That’s the reason and

it’s also a local company.” “It’s locally made and it’s a good product. I tried and I liked it. It sells well,” said John DeFalco Sr., owner of Monnette’s Market. O

For those times when hungry Toledoans can’t decide where to go for dinner, a quick shuffle of some Foodie Cards can make the deci-

sion for them. Foodie Cards are a deck of 54 coupons to local restaurants, each for $10 off the bill. Restaurants include Rosie’s Italian Grille, bd’s Mongolian Grill, El Vaquero Mexican Restaurant, The Spaghetti Warehouse and Dé-

gagé Jazz Café. The deck also includes two jokers with coupons for Fat Fish Blue and the Funny Bone Comedy Club and four jacks with coupons for Paddy Jack’s Sylvania. Todd Gagné, CEO of It’s Interactive Media (i2m), said he wanted to stay local with the concept.

“That was the goal, to stay local and to promote local eateries,” Gagné said. Even though some franchises are included in the deck, like Buffalo Wild Wings, the coupon cannot be used anywhere in the country; they can only be used in the area. It did not cost the restaurants to participate; they only needed to agree to honor the coupon. “This is just a neat, unique idea to get people to try the new places,” Gagné said. “The ultimate goal is to get them to try it and when they go and have a good experience, then they’re going to go back.” The cards were released in August. Gagné has plans to expand and hopes to be in 10 cities by this time next year.

The cards are a great Christmas gift and are conveniently small for purses or pockets, Gagné said. They are being used for school fundraisers as well, which is currently the highest market. “It just kind of naturally lends itself to a fundraising opportunity,” Gagné said. “The fundraising is really what’s been knocking it out of the park.” The deck of cards costs $20, so redeeming two cards pays for the deck completely. The cards are available online at foodiecards.com or in local places like a kiosk in the Franklin Park Mall, Libbey Glass Factory Outlet, all University of Toledo federal credit unions and Costume Holiday House. If the unnamed putative father does not register in relationship to the above named birth mother or said child on the putative father registry at the Indiana State Department of Health within 30 days of the date of the filing of the above referenced Petition, or file a notice with the above named court to contest the termination of his putative parental rights within 30 days of receipt of this notice, or appear at the hearing on the above referenced Petition, the Court may enter a default judgment against him that terminates his parent/ child relationship with the child. Further, the birth mother has expressed the intention to place the child for adoption. If the unnamed putative father wants to be entitled to receive notice of an adoption petition concerning the child and to not have his consent to the child’s adoption placement irrevocably implied pursuant to the Indiana Law, the unnamed putative father must file a paternity action under I.C. 31-14 or register in relationship to the above named birth mother on the putative father registry at the Indiana State Department of Health within thirty (30)days after the date of the filing of the above referenced Petition and then perform such acts as required by law. This notice is being served by publication. Nothing Wilma Fordham or anyone else says to the unnamed putative father of the child relieves the unnamed putative father of his obligations under this Notice. Under Indiana law, a putative father is a person who is named as or claims that he may be the father of a child born out of wedlock but who has not yet been legally proved to be the child’s father.

China

Sasha

China is a 1-year-old female pit bull mix. A humane society cruelty officer brought her into the shelter after her owner moved away, leaving her behind in the backyard. China has missed being part of a family. Once she is settled into a new home, she will settle down some and just enjoy spending time with her new family. China has been spayed, examined by a Toledo Area Humane Society (TAHS) staff veterinarian, is current on her vaccinations and is microchipped. Sasha is an 8-year-old spayed tortie. She was found out in the cold and brought to TAHS so that she could

find a new home. Sasha loves sleeping in boxes and enjoys sitting in your lap. She would love to go to a quieter home where she can enjoy napping on the couch with her favorite people. Sasha has been spayed, examined by a TAHS veterinarian, is current on her vaccinations and is microchipped. Toledo Area Humane Society is located at 1920 Indian Wood Circle, Arrowhead Park, Maumee. Adoption hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
