LIGHTING THE FUSE
A wonderful start
O
n Dec. 20, a few of us played holiday hooky and went to see “It’s a Wonderful Life” on the big screen at Levis Commons as part of the Toledo Free Press-sponsored Rave Classic Cinema series. The glorious black-and-white Frank Capra/Jimmy Stewart masterpiece is one of my favorite holiday traditions, and being able to see it on a big screen for the first time reminded me of the many changes Rave Motion Pictures has brought since they invested in the local movie market by buying the area’s multiplexes from National Amusements last December (and really ramping up in June). There have been some initial growing pains — employee layoffs, the end of some Thomas F. POUNDS discount policies and the closing of the Maumee 18 — but a quick look at what Rave has improved is impressive. In less than one year, Rave has: ■ Added digital projection capabilites to all its screens at Levis Commons, Fallen Timbers and Westfield. ■ Added 3-D capacity to a market where there was virtually none. ■ Lowered ticket prices by 50 cents. ■ Offered free refills on large sodas and popcorn. ■ Continued and expanded art offerings with live events of concerts, operas and special shows. ■ Finally brought the area a large-screen format theater ■ Donated pianos to the Toledo School for the Arts. ■ Established the previously mentioned classic film series, which offers a treasure chest of movies waiting to be rediscovered. ■ Offered coupons in local media (Toledo Free Press Star is running a coupon that is worth a free medium popcorn when a medium or large drink is purchased, a generous deal given the price of popcorn). ■ On Dec. 20, announced it had sold the Maumee 18 to the Calvary Assembly of God. After watching the area’s other three abandoned theaters sit empty for years, it is impressive how quickly Rave was able to repurpose this property. The deal was reportedly a financial loss for Rave, which illustrates how seriously the company took its promise to find a use for the building. There are always starry-eyed promises and high hopes thrown about when a new company comes to town. It is gratifying to see that Rave has so far taken its promises seriously and worked to make them a reality. That is what makes Rave a star in the local entertainment scene. Thomas F. Toledo City Council passed a resolution recognizing Tom Pounds, Toledo Free Press president and publisher, for helping the Toledo Symphony Orchestra (TSO) raise private funds for its trip to Carnegie Hall. On Dec. 12, Pounds wrote a column challenging area businesses and individuals to raise funds to send TSO to New York, in lieu of using public funds as the TSO had requested. Toledo Free Press donated the first $1,000 and within a week more than $10,000 was raised for the orchestra’s trip. Pounds presented a check to Kathy Carroll, TSO president and CEO, during the Dec. 21 council meeting. “[The funding is] wonderful. It’s a great outcome,” Carroll said. At the same meeting, Council recognized Pounds for his financial contribution to TSO, as well as his encouragement of others to do the same.
“I’d like to thank Tom and the Free Press for going out there and putting their money and their time where their mouth is. They didn’t just go out and write an editorial, but went out and worked hard to have the courage of his convictions,” said Mike Craig, who sponsored the resolution. Mayor Mike Bell, who also contributed $1,000 as part of the challenge, thanked Pounds for stepping up and helping the city and TSO. “I was honored to receive the resolution. I never expected this after we made this challenge,” Pounds said. A total of $11,120 has been raised so far by Pounds through area businesses and individuals. Clear Channel, Fifth Third Bank, Owens Community College, Rohrbachers, Cron, Manahan, Trimble & Zimmerman Co., Romilio “Rome” Marinelli, Columbia Gas of Ohio, Toledo Edison, Dunbar Mechanical, Duke Wheeler Jr., Paul and Carol Kraus all contributed to TSO’s trip. TSO will perform at Carnegie Hall in May.

After the holiday rush, many families may find themselves wondering where they will find space for all the new toys in their households. The Town Center at Levis Commons in Perrysburg is offering a solution with its second annual “Play It Forward� used toy drive. The Town Center will collect gently used plastic toys for local families in need Jan. 7 and 8. Donations can be dropped off in front of the movie theater at Levis Commons from noon to 6 p.m. Donated toys should be plastic, in working order, clean and have fresh batteries if possible. “When functioning and useable toys are thrown out, they become
waste in a landfill, take up a lot of space and do not biodegrade,� said Casey Pogan, marketing director at The Town Center at Levis ComPOGAN mons, in a news release. “Adding to this is the fact that many children in our area go without toys, which are instrumental in creativity and imagination development.� The toys will be distributed in mid-January to the Aurora House and Mom’s House, both local charities serving women and children in Northwest Ohio. The Aurora House is a transitional housing shelter for homeless women and children, spe-
cifically women who were dealing with addictions. Mom’s House works to empower single parents through education and child care. Pogan said the idea for the drive was born as she and a co-worker talked about their young children. “Preparing for Christmas last year, we needed to clear out some old stuff to make room for new and it was just an idea that transpired from our own families,� Pogan said. In its first year, the drive collected three cargo vans full of toys for the Toledo Day Nursery. People donated everything from large swings and walkers to tiny miscellaneous items, Pogan said. “It was amazing. We carried box after box into the basement storeroom, but took two or three right into the children’s toy room and let them
open the boxes,� Pogan said. “It was such a good feeling, tingle-worthy, to see the kids grab a toy and take ownership of it.� Plastic toys are preferred versus soft toys, like stuffed animals, because plastic toys are more harmful in landfills and because they spawn creativity and imagination, Pogan said. Cousino Harris Disaster Kleenup will clean and sanitize the toys. “That is a huge thing, so if people are feeling hesitant about donating because something has been sitting in the attic, they don’t need to because it’s going to be cleaned and sanitized,� Pogan said. Fallen Timbers opens ice rink for winter The Shops at Fallen Timbers unveiled a synthetic ice rink Dec. 18. The 4,000-square-foot rink sits outside
Red Robin and the movie theater. “It’s something we’ve always wanted,” said Heidi Yanok, senior marketing manager. “We’ve always wanted a way for the community to gather.” The cost is $5 per hour or
$10 for the whole day. Skate rentals cost $1.50, Yanok said. The rink will be open until Feb. 28, but the rink is made from mostly synthetic materials so it does not depend on cold weather to operate.

Sister Cities International has awarded a two-year $115,000 grant to Toledo-Tanga Sister Cities International Committee to perform projects that address sanitation, health and water issues in urban areas of Africa, according to a news release. This project is funded by a $7.5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Toledo International Youth Orchestra traveled to Tanga, Tanzania, in summer 2009 as part of its musical outreach program. Toledo-Tanga Sister Cities International Committee played a role in the trip. “This Sister Cities International program represents a major effort to address fundamental needs of citizens of urban areas in Africa,” said Patrick Madden, president and CEO, Sister Cities International, in a press release. “These sister cities represent some of the strongest partnerships between the U.S. and Africa and will become the measure of how cities can help each other and leave an enduring legacy in tangible ways.”

Van donated to Little Sisters of the Poor The Little Sisters of the Poor-Sacred Heart Home is receiving a new transport van courtesy of two area grants. Little Sisters of the Poor received grant funding from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments (TMACOG) and the Toledo Rotary Foundation to purchase the transport vehicle. The van cost $37,951. ODOT and TMACOG provided 80 percent of funding, while the rest came from the Toledo Rotary Foundation. Bill Cook, director of development for the Little Sisters of the Poor, said the funding is “a very welcome donation.” The minivan will be used to meet the daily transportation needs of Sacred Heart Home’s residents, such as trips to doctor’s appointments, physical therapy and shopping, Cook said. The van is wheelchair accessible and can hold up to four people, he said. The home previously had a transport van, but it was getting older and was in need of replacement, Cook said. Additionally, Sacred Heart has a much larger vehicle to take more individuals on outings. — Staff Reports

property. While staying in the neighborhood was important to them, making the house look exactly like the original was not. They moved in Dec. 17. The Blanks’ new house FAMILY: is a little bit bigger and includes a more open kitchen, which pours into the family room. “We had a very small kitchen, very small counter space and not many cupboards,” Julie said. “This is the biggest difference, the kitchen. I love it, it is the best. This is where I hang out all day.” The first-floor bathroom used to be in the foyer, but now is near the garage entrance. Their builder, Mark Rigg, said houses these days don’t include bathrooms in the foyer. A pantry took the place of where the first-floor bath-

The Blanks are home, but it doesn’t feel like it yet. “It seems like a different house to me,” Julie said. “When I sit down in the kitchen, it is like totally different to me. I try to picture the old house and I can picture certain rooms, but it is not at all like the other house.” The changes are good. room used to be. The builder added a back door from the laundry room to the pool, which has been repaired and winterized. All the furniture is new, except for two end tables that were found after the tornado. Those are in the Blanks’ newly finished basement. The base-
ment also contains the sofas bought for the condo they lived in while their house was rebuilt. “I made 30 trips back and forth from the condo,” Ed said. “All that is left in the condo is dirt, and we are having the carpets cleaned.” The move-in went smoothly with
meals supplied by the Blanks’ church, Zion Lutheran Church-Latcha. “It wasn’t that bad until I got sick and then I woke up Saturday morning with the flu,” Julie said. “I wasn’t able to help. I was in bed all day, but at least I was in the new house.” ■ BLANK FAMILY CONTINUES ON A9

playing knickknacks, putting up the window treatments and getting the phone and cable situated. “Casey has another dresser coming,” Julie said. “We have a family room couch and chair coming still. Part of the bar stools and kitchen table chairs came, but they were lopsided, so we sent them back.”
Even with work to be done, Ed said he and Julie will be hosting a New Year’s Eve party. They said they have missed entertaining. “It will be nice to have people over and not have to go anywhere. We might just tie one on that night,” Ed said, laughing.

Stephen Leggett, former intern for the department of public services, believes he was let go from his internship for supplying Toledo City Council with his report of the streetlight outages. Leggett, who once ran for Toledo City Council, told Toledo Free Press that he “absolutely” believes he was terminated in connection to the documentation he provided to council. Deputy Mayor Steve Herwat, told Toledo Free Press that Leggett was let go because it’s the end of the budget year and Leggett had only been working sporadically the past few months. While working as a full-time intern in the summer, Leggett noticed a number of streetlights out around the city and asked if he could tag them and contact Toledo Edison to get them fixed, he said. Leggett was given permission, so he began documenting lights at night. Leggett shared what he was doing with Herwat when he shadowed him for the day. Herwat expressed an interest in a report on the streetlight problem, so Leggett began compiling one, he said. “I did not want this to embarrass the administration [with my report]. I did this to help the administration,”
Leggett said. In his report, Leggett found roughly 27 percent of the lights sampled weren’t working properly. Leggett tried to provide the information to the administration, but was told by his superiors, Tom Crothers, director of public utilities, and David Welch, director of the department of public service, no one would want to know that information so he held on to his documentation, he said. Earlier this month, D. Michael Collins requested “the reports of the private consultant regarding street lighting. Consolidate what the intern did, which identified how severe the problem is,” due to conflicting opinions on how many streetlights were out. On Dec. 9, Robin L. Whitney, commissioner, engineering services, sent a memo to Collins and said the administration was never given such a report. On Dec. 17, Leggett was subpoenaed by Collins to present his information to the Public Safety, Law and Criminal Justice committee. The committee sought the information to determine if council should vote in favor of an assessment of public lights. Councilman Collins said Leggett’s termination sends a poor message to young men and women who might want to get involved to help the community. “An internship is really not a posi-
tion that the intern has a right to employment, however, retaliation and removal is an abuse of authority,” Collins said. “If Stephen Leggett’s report was inaccurate or misleading then of course one could challenge his credibility and therefore define as not worthy of continuing an internship, but that was not the case; there was never a demonstration by the city administration that his report was in error.” Leggett first began to question his internship status when he noticed his city e-mail no longer worked and he could get no one with the city to return his calls, he said. Leggett finally spoke with Herwat on Dec. 22. Leggett said he made arrangements to be Herwat’s intern next summer, but was told the administration decided to go another way, he said. Leggett asked Herwat if that meant he no longer worked in the department of public services and was told that assumption would be correct, Leggett said. Leggett said Herwat also told him at the end of the call, “Welcome to politics.” Herwat said Leggett has taken that comment out of context. “He told me he never meant to create the storm that occurred over the issue and that he never realized it would come out that way it is and I said, ‘Welcome to politics’.”

Candy canes, a holiday tradition dating back 600 years, are made today by the Spangler Candy Company in Bryan. Spangler makes 2.7 million candy canes per day as a major U.S.based producer of the confection. “I believe we’re the only company that still makes candy canes here in the U.S. We usually have 50 percent or more of the candy cane market depending on the year,” said Jim Knight, vice president of marketing at Spangler. There is even a special day to celebrate the candy as Dec. 26 is known as National Candy Cane Day. The day is meant to appreciate the history of candy canes and eating them the day after Christmas has become a tasty tradition. French priests invented the candy stick in the early 1400s for supporting Christmas tree branches when food was used for decorating the trees. Priests in Germany created the modern candy cane shape in 1670 to look like a shepherd’s crook. The hooked ornament was easier to hang on a traditional Christmas tree and a tasty treat for children who behaved well during holiday services, according to its history. The red stripe was added in the early 1900s to create the candy canes known today. Spangler purchased the A-Z Candy Company of Detroit in 1954 to become the largest candy cane maker in the nation. What the tax deal means to your estate plan
R
ecently, President Obama made a tax deal with the Republicans to extend the Bush income tax rates for two years. Along with the extension of the tax cuts, the issue of the federal estate tax was also addressed. As most people know, the federal estate tax in 2009 was 45 percent of anything exceeding $3.5 million. In 2010, this tax was Mark repealed and famiNolan lies like the famous Steinbrenners will save more than $500 million dollars in taxes since father George happened to die in 2010. The estate tax was supposed to come back to a tax rate of 55 percent on anything exceeding $1 million. The deal Obama made with the Republican lawmakers lowers the tax rate to 35 percent on anything exceeding $5 million for an individual and $10 million for a married couple. The law change also unifies the estate and gift tax exemptions allowing generous people to give away a lot more money without paying tax. What this means is that less than 1 percent of the population will end up paying any federal estate tax. As the robot on the old television show “Lost in Space” used to say, “Danger, Will Robinson!” What The Retirement Guys see as a danger here is falling into a false sense of security. As an estate planning attorney, I (Mark) saw it back in the ’80s and ’90s when the federal estate tax exemption was first $600,000, then $750,000, then $1 million, then $2 million and finally $3.5 million. At these exemption levels many folks out there thought they did not need to do any estate planning. If they were focusing only on estate taxes, perhaps they were correct. Now with the exemption amounts $5 million to $10 million, many people may think the same thing. Unfortunately, there are more is-
sues to estate planning than just estate taxes. Here are a few of them: 1. Plan of Distribution — everyone should think through what they want to happen with their assets when they die. Who do you want to get your house, money and the grandfather clock? 2. Appointments — who do you want to appoint to adCLAIR minister your estate BAKER to make sure everything gets where it is supposed to go? 3. Probate Avoidance — if you have assets that will go through probate, you may want to consider how much it will cost and how long it will take. A living trust may be the ticket to saving substantial attorney fees and to help speed up the process. 4. What If You Don’t Die? — every good estate plan includes health care directives and powers of attorney to name an agent to handle matters if you become too sick to do so. 5. The tax ticking time bomb (Income Taxes) — So many people forget about doing any estate planning for their retirement accounts like IRAs. 401(k)s, 403(b)s, etc. These accounts many times have never been taxed and if you don’t deal with it now, somebody will. There are laws in place now that allow for creating income tax-free dollars so that your family can inherit an amount that is equal to that which is now in your account rather than something like 40 percent less when Uncle Sam takes a big bite. 6. Who Will Be the Guardians of Your Children? — if you have minor children, you should think this through. Who will provide them the care they need and has views on life similar to yours that will provide a nurturing environment? 7. Beneficiary Designations — many do not know that their will or trust does not decide where accounts

Sixteen-year-old Trayvone Mathis started life with a mom and dad serving as role models to keep him on the right path. But when he was 11, his parents divorced and he started to fall from that path, hanging out with a rougher crowd and looking to his older friends for direction. “After years of following, I became the leader, leading those who followed me to nowhere,” Mathis said. “I stole and showed them how. I hit people for no reason at all and watched my followers do the same. Needless to say, I was lost.” The Start High School junior, speaking on behalf of the International Boxing Club (IBC), shared his story at a recent gathering of Chicks for Charity. The group of female fundraisers had come together to hear from three finalists, winnowed from 50 applications, vying for selection as the group’s next designated charity. Chicks for Charity, which recently announced that IBC will be the recipient of its next two-year fundraising effort, starting Jan. 1, has a twofold mission: Increase awareness of under-the-radar organizations doing great work in the community and raise money to help them do more of it, said founder Martha Vetter. Other finalists were Camp Courageous and the Great Lakes Center for Autism. Chicks for Charity has raised more than $260,000 for local charities since 2006, most recently raising about $156,000 in the past two years for The Victory Center, which provides support to those living with cancer, Vetter said. Mathis joined IBC at age 15 to learn to fight so he could be tough on the streets; but instead found new direction from Coach Harry Cummins and better examples from his new teammates. “My first few days at the gym, I was constantly corrected; no rule would be broken and no person would be disrespected. All of the things I had grown accustomed to over the years were severely punished,” Mathis told the Chicks. “Frustration at Coach Harry was commonplace. But for some crazy reason, I never quit.” He started to make changes in his life, molding himself to new role models and striving toward new standards. Instead of leading younger friends in the wrong direction, Mathis now serves as a positive influence to those around him. “I felt embarrassment toward my old role models that I thought were men, because as I looked upon them and the things they did, I saw nothing. They never accomplished anything over their whole lives,” Mathis said. He asked the Chicks to think about their role models growing up and who taught them right from wrong. “What if no one did, and the people you turned to to see what was right, always did wrong?” Mathis asked. The teen’s testimony was a big factor in swaying Chicks to vote for IBC, Vetter said. “It changed so many people’s minds. After you hear their stories, it’s inspiring, it really is,” Vetter said. “But it was so difficult; there are so many awesome groups out there doing great work that could have used the funding. The vote was pretty close. IBC definitely won, but not by a landslide.” ■ BOXING CONTINUES ON A13

A14 ■ TOLEDO FREE PRESS ■ BOXING CONTINUED FROM A12 Coach Cummins, executive director of IBC, said he’s still in shock because his gym was chosen. “It’s like we just won the lottery!” Cummins said. “This is going to be the turning point of the organization.” More than 4,000 students have passed through IBC since Cummins opened the gym in 1998. The club currently has 30 members, ranging in VETTER age from 8 to 19. About 10 percent choose to box competitively; the rest box for exercise. Cummins said IBC has a waiting list, so his No. 1 goal is to be able to add staff during the next two years so the club can expand and accommodate more members. When the gym opened, 75 percent of its members were failing school, Cummins said. “I only have two who are failing now and they are new kids,” Cummins said. “For the past few years, we’ve had none failing.” Sixteen of his former club members are attending local universities. “The kids have a lot of talent,” Cummins said. “The downfall is they’re always being put down and told they can’t do something. Give them a little confidence and it’s amazing what they can do.” Mathis agreed that one of the gym’s biggest assets is confidence-building. “Kids come here shy, with low self-esteem, and boxing raises their confidence to branch out into a lot of different areas,” Mathis said. “It gives you that boost you need to kick your life into gear.” Toledo was the first IBC in the nation to start a homework center and is the only one Cummins is aware of to have a vocational learning center. Club members are required to do an
hour of homework before boxing and their grades must be improving to work out. It usually takes a few weeks for new members to fall into the pattern, Cummins said. “At first they just want to box. But then they see other kids doing their schoolwork as well as boxing and those are perfect role models for the other kids,” Cummins said. “Then they start to see their grades pick up, they feel good about themselves, and then they’re hooked.” Cummins said one club member, a former gang member, spent most of the club’s recent Christmas party in the computer lab doing homework. “I told him he could take the night off, but he said he had a lot of work to do,” Cummins said. “That’s how I know the program’s working.” The vocational center, where older students can learn woodworking and basic electrical and plumbing skills in a pre-apprenticeship program, was added in June. The gym contains a computer lab, with all computers built by the students, and a pro shop, where students sell IBC merchandise, Cummins said. Through his Gloves with Love program, Cummins takes students into the community to do service projects. Cummins said IBC plans to host an open house early next year so the community can see firsthand what goes on at the gym, which was originally located on the East Side and is now at 1717 Adams St., in Downtown Toledo. IBC board member Mike Csizek was also hooked from his first visit, attracted to the positive energy and impressed that the club touches on so many key areas, including fitness, academics, social skills and leadership skills. Although boxing is typically maledominated, about 25 percent of IBC members are girls, Cummins said. Kelly Boucha joined the gym in junior high and boxed competitively against other girls. Now the 21-year-
old helps coach and will graduate from the University of Toledo this spring. “It made me more disciplined,” Boucha said. “I learned more selfworth and how to treat people. [Cummins] always instilled manners in kids so now I try to do the same thing.” Mathis takes his role as mentor to the younger members seriously. “When I go up in the ring, you can see them stop and stare and watch,” Mathis said. “I try to be like a big brother.”
DECEMBER 26, 2010 Cummins said he’d like to dispel a common misconception people have of boxing clubs. “We’re not here to promote violence,” Cummins said. “We use boxing as a hook to get kids off the streets. It’s great to have champions in the ring, but we’re trying to create champions in life.” Vetter said she is excited about starting a new chapter with IBC. “We want to tell the whole community what is going on down on

AAA of Northwest Ohio warns drivers that auto maintenance is the key to avoiding breakdowns and costly repair bills especially during the winter season. Disregarding maintenance of a vehicle can result in costly repairs but also can put drivers, passengers and others on the road in danger, according to AAA. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Preventive maintenance is the best way to avoid having your vehicle break down on the road,â&#x20AC;? said Eric Johnson, director of automotive services for AAA of Northwest Ohio. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Taking care of your vehicle can not only prevent a breakdown but also cost far less than a major repair that might be needed if regular maintenance is not followed.â&#x20AC;? The best way to catch problems before they happen is to have vehicles serviced regularly based on the manufacturersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; recommended maintenance schedule, Johnson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some motorists have cut back on maintenance or delayed needed repairs due to tight budgets in this tough economy, especially if the vehicle is drivable. With proper budgeting and regular maintenance, it can save drivers money, time and potential problems,â&#x20AC;? Johnson said. Now that winter has arrived, there are key components for winter car care that are susceptible to failure or wear when the temperature drops. AAA recommends checking antifreeze protection and flushing the cooling system if needed, checking for worn hoses and belts and examining brakes, tires, the battery and electrical system.
Antifreeze is usually the first item people think of when it comes to winter maintenance. AAA recommends a 50-50 solution of engine coolant and water to provide the necessary antifreeze capability. The coolant solution will only work if it stays in the system so the hoses and clamps that carry the mixture must be in good working order. Visually inspect cooling system hoses for leaks, cracks or loose clamps. Feel the hoses to check for any that may be brittle or excessively soft and spongy. Motorists should have the cooling system flushed and filled with new coolant as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, usually every two to five years. The efficiency of the battery decreases in colder temperatures. Have the batteryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s condition tested, especially if it is more than three years old. AAAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mobile Battery Service will test auto batteries for its members at no charge. Wiper blades should completely clear the windshield with each swipe. If there are streaks or missed spots, AAA advises that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to replace them. Winter wiper blades can help prevent ice and snow buildup that can inhibit good contact between the rubber blades and glass. Traction is the key to safe winter driving and having the right type of tires on vehicles is essential, according to AAA. Using snow tires on all four wheels will provide the best traction in heavy winter weather. Allseason tires will work well in light to moderate conditions, provided they have adequate tread depth of no less than 3/32-inch. â&#x2013; AAA CONTINUES ON A17

Brakes that are likely to grab or pull on a dry road are likely to lock on ice or snow-covered pavement. Most manufacturers recommend that the brake system be flushed and filled with new fluid every two to three years to avoid water in the system that causes rust, leaks and brake failure. “Properly preparing your vehicle for winter is essential for safe driving and will decrease the chances of your
vehicle leaving you stranded in the cold,” Johnson said. AAA of Northwest Ohio operates three auto maintenance and repair facilities in Toledo that meet high professional standards with ASE certified technicians. Those Car Care Centers are located on Airport Highway, West Central Avenue, and North Towne Square Drive. Some maintenance and repairs are best done by certified auto technicians, but there are several basic items motorists can check themselves, such as checking the oil, other fluid levels, wind-

shield wiper blades and washer fluid, air pressure in tires, air filter and battery cable connections, according to AAA. Many do-it-yourselfers can usually check those items themselves, while other drivers may want to rely on professional service technicians for their maintenance needs available. Many of the service technicians working in auto dealerships and service shops in this area are trained in
the Automotive Service Management program at Owens Community College. About 200 students per semester are enrolled in the program which has a 100 percent placement rate, according to Tracy Campbell, chairman of the program at Owens. AAA Car Care Centers have hired numerous graduates of the program from Owens, said Johnson, who serves on the advisory board for it there.

Travelogues are vehicle to world travel
T
ravelogues are certainly not the most popular form of entertainment, but they can be valuable to a certain segment of the population. For those who can’t afford to travel, they are an inexpensive vehicle to see our country and the world. For those who like to travel, they can suggest new destinations and impart much practical information. For those whose traveling days might be over, they can bring back many wonderful memories. For the next three months Toledoans will be blessed with just such an opportunity and it’s all free. Metroparks of Toledo Area and Hostelling International (HI) are sponsoring the Travel Circle series. If you are familiar with HI, you know it especially promotes hiking, biking and staying in hostels. Although some of the programs might feature some of those activities, they are generally more wide-ranging. They take place at several Metroparks (listed below) on Saturdays at 2:15 p.m. Refreshments are even free. If you are more ambitious, you can arrive at 1 p.m. and walk a few miles (or maybe cross country ski if snow) with a group, but that certainly is not required. Jan. 8: Westward Ho!
