Profile
During my time studying at Edinburgh School of Architecture, I have developed a strong interest in the sustainable design of buildings and towns, looking into circular economies, retrofit design and self sustaining communities. I am now excited to put this interest into practice as a part II architectural assistant, hoping to test where certain elements of design can work within the industry as it is right now. I currently have over two years experience in practice and on private design work, being involved with masterplanning, urban schemes and one off designs, with each project worked through on Revit and Microstation. I am passionate about the graphic representation of architecture as a means of story-telling and have experience with small project construction, which both compliment my time in practice. With this skill-set and passion, I believe I can make a strong impact in the movement of healthy places and sustainable design today.

GARDEN FOR AN ANCHORITE The project aims to imagine a self sustaining kitchen garden for the Island of Mont Saint Michel, off the coast of Normandy. It uses hints from the landscape that surround, carefully folded and reimagined into a condensed space, to harvest seafood and crops for the year round. Two houses of estrangement, formed within the fabric of the Abbey, become the seeds for the rituals that occur within the garden.

Gathering of landscape conditions The tectonics of the architecture have been drawn and then tested from a re-imagining of the landscape conditions of the bay, to make for a garden that uses the same techniques of farming that already exists here.

Situated in the bay The entire garden sits within a tidal landscape, built upon mudflats. Therefore the architecture has been set out to respond to this changing landscape, both daily and yearly. Certain areas are shut off from the tide, whilst other areas welcome it, using it for collection of salt or to encourage growth.

ANIMATION OF DETRITUS Designed for a pair of animators, the projects aims to create a home, studio and workshop for the animation of detritus and found objects. Situated on a disused salvage yard, habitable spaces are held above by a series of parallel walls, which in turn divide the rich animators playground below. Each wall has been formed from existing material within the site, reimagining the ‘detritus’ on the yard into an architectural experience.

Double House As part of the habitable spaces above, the two animators work as a pair, collecting contrasting elements of the world they find themselves in. One animator uses his house as a tool for capturing the horizon out to sea, whilst the other, focuses on the micro of the world beneath.

A world concealed Using the existing wall that separated the yard from the busy road in front, the architecture sits just proud of the stone, appearing as if floating above. Concealed by reflective zinc panel wrap arounds, these also create a contrasting phenomenological experience once inside the chaos of the yard.

WINTON TERRACE EXTENSION Commissioned to design a small rear extension for a family of four in Edinburgh, the project becomes an extension of the kitchen, bleeding out into an extended living area and fully opening up onto a new decking which leads to the garden. I was involved from the start of the project, taking it up to planning.

GARDEN OFFICE Taking an old garden shed, we were able to take apart and reassemble the prefabricated parts in a new location to form a garden office. All the parts were reused apart from the roof structure, which was converted from a pitch roof to a flat roof, to abide by planning rules.

CENTRE FOR INNOVATION A building designed around encouraging innovation, the arrangement of workspaces creates opportunities for collaboration wherever possible. The nature of flexible working also means that the architecture allows for change whether its for each day or each year, through its design for disassembly.
