But the ability to strategically control and vary the hardness or softness of a line along its entire length hugely impacts the amount of energy required to form a loop and generate line speed. Zone Tech allows us mastery of this key variable, maximizing the performance of every inch of line. The Airflo Ridge - the world’s first textured fly line. Its genius lies in its very inception. Richard grew up fishing the rivers and lakes of Wales, and playing cricket and rugby. He studied zoology at Liverpool University specializing in freshwater biology and fisheries. After graduating, he worked for the Welsh Fisheries Department radio- tracking salmon on the river Usk and monitoring salmon recruitment on the river Wye. In 1988, Richard joined Airflo as a Marketing Assistant before moving over to product development, and ultimately running Airflo’s production facility. It’s fair to say that Richard can be credited with more “firsts” than perhaps anyone in the history of fly line production. He has pioneered the techniques required to produce fly lines in multiple layers - allowing the ability to progressively vary both line density and material hardness throughout the length of a line. Richard has also created many of the breakthroughs that now define m odern fly lines. These include the welded loop, double density heads, triple d ensity heads and the first commercially available multi-tip line. One of Richard’s inventions even hangs in the National S cience Museum in London - the Airflo Ridge line - the first modern fly line engineered with surface modifications to improve casting performance. And there’s one more brainchild of Richard’s you need to know about: Airflo Polyleaders. Available in seven different densities, they’re not so much leaders as they are seamless extensions of your line. Nothing transmits the energy of a cast as well as an Airflo Polyleader. Cast one and you’ll thank Richard for being the mad scientist he is.

Those guys got nuthin’on these two dudes. The idyllic trout streams of Wales flowed through his youth. And every day after school, his homework took second seat to pursuing their residents. Soon, Gareth began fishing the region’s lakes in search of monsters reportedly lurking t here. Along the way, Gareth turned into a fly casting machine. At 18 he won his very fi rst competition - the Welsh National Championships. Shortly thereafter, he earned a spot on the Welsh National team. Gareth fi shed on the team for many years and even helped take them to two World Championships - including in 2000, when the team fi nished second and Gareth picked up an individual Bronze. For many years, Gareth has also been a member of the highly successful Nymphomaniacs team - the dominant team in the United Kingdom during his tenure. His extensive experience w ith competitive angling has had huge impact on Airflo product design. And thanks to the river Usk having flowed through his backyard for the past 30 years, Gareth has mastered the technical skills demanded by these highly selective fish. The lessons learned from all this experience can be felt in every Airflo line you cast. Except for the occasional journey to various remote corners of the planet, Gareth’s presence at Airflo has loomed large for the past three decades. This diverse angling pedigree - competitive, technical and exotic - coupled with his close collaboration with Richard and others at Airflo, have been the driving force behind Airflo becoming the respected global brand that it is.
