Welcome Helgi Hrannarr Jónsson Managing Director Global Blue Iceland
Iceland – Europe´s favorite hotspot More and more international travellers have visited Iceland in recent years and with the country experiencing rapid growth in tourism in the last 10 years, it is now one of the most important industries in Iceland. Icelanders in general are very proud of their country and the history of our nation and are eager to make travellers feel very welcome when visiting Iceland. The majority of people travelling to Iceland want to see and experience nature and what it has to offer in some of the country‘s exceptional terrain, while an increasing number of people visit Iceland without any preferences. A major change in recent times is also the fact that the winter season is increasingly popular, especially with younger travellers seeking to stay in the city of Reykjavik and explore what it has to offer. We have seen that the majority of travellers want to buy souvenirs of their trip to Iceland, and the traditional Icelandic woollen sweater has been the crowd favourite for quite some time. Travellers also continue to seek the exceptional quality in outdoor clothing as well as other locally designed and produced goods. This is of course a valuable footprint and we have seen small companies starting up with a focus on serving tourists. As always, all travellers are entitled to their VAT refunds in a system that is both fast and reliable and we urge you to do your shopping and ask for your Tax Free cheque. We hope your stay in Iceland will be memorable and look forward to seeing you again. Yours sincerely Helgi Hrannarr Jónsson, Managing Director Global Blue Iceland

Icelandic design Over the past decade Icelandic fashion design has evolved rapidly from experimental to a well defined and disciplined industry making waves on the international fashion scene. Young Icelandic designers are inspired by influences at home and from abroad which allows them to explore and play with different themes within the social and historical context of fashion. Icelandic fashion design is dynamic, playful, original and ambitious but at the same time functional and most of all wearable. Icelandic fashion design shops are mostly found in the city centre, in the side-streets, alleys and attics, so be sure to keep your eyes open.
Jewellery Icelandic jewellery designers are individual in their designs, reflecting Iceland’s magnificent landscape and nature. Some designers create pieces using Icelandic semi-precious stones; others reflect the landscape, or take their inspiration from the Icelandic Sagas and Viking Period. Creating cutting edge and unique pieces from the best materials. The result is beautiful yet rustic and wearable jewellery and pieces of art. Be sure not to leave Iceland without visiting one of the many jewellery shops in the city centre.
Icelandic woollen Evolving over 1,100 years of exposure to the sub-Arctic climate, the Iceland sheep is a unique animal. The purity of the strain has been protected by centuries of isolation and a total absence of contact with others. By the same token, the wool it produces has no counterpart anywhere. The outer fibers are long, glossy, tough and water resistant, while the inner ones are fine, soft and insulating, providing a high resistance to cold. The distinctive patterns of Icelandic knitwear are as much a part of Iceland as its mountains, waterfalls and hot springs.

Iceland Airwaves REYKJAVÍK 5TH - 9TH OF NOVEMBER 2014
Mykki Blanco – Iceland Airwaves 2013
The coolest music festival on earth! Since the first edition was held in 1999, Iceland Airwaves has become one of the premier annual showcases for new music – Icelandic and otherwise – in the world. It’s made a heap of friends and won many fans along the way. Rolling Stone magazine called it “The hippest long weekend on the annual music-festival calendar.” Some of the world’s most exciting artists have performed there, too. The Shins, The Rapture, TV on the Radio, Florence and the Machine, Klaxons, Hot Chip, Flaming Lips, Wolf Parade, Bloc Party and Fatboy Slim have made the short hop from Europe or North America to share the stage with Iceland’s finest talents, including performers such as Björk, Sigur Rós, FM Belfast, GusGus, múm, Of Monsters and Men and Seabear, to name but a few. And when the live bands have done their thing, top DJs from all over the world spin across the city until the crack of dawn. With inclusive package tours from major international gateways starting at less than you might expect to pay for airfare alone, getting neck deep in one of the hottest, coolest music festivals anywhere is maybe just a little too easy. Poke around the site, sign up for email updates, check the prices from your neck of the woods and read about what’s in store for 2014. Then come and join the party. My City Reykjavík RAGNHEIÐUR ÖSP – DESIGNER
Ragnheiður Ösp Sigurðardóttir
Where were you born and what was your impression of the area? I was born in Keflavík, a small town by the ocean, home of the international airport and former home of a USA Navy Base. I had a great time growing up there. As kids, we would always find ways to entertain ourselves. Where do you live now and what do you like best about it? Now I live in the Laugardalur area in Reykjavík. I moved there last summer after having lived downtown Reykjavík for five years. I absolutely love it, Laugardalur is one of my favorite parts of the city, a beautiful area with interesting history. What I like most about it would have to be the Botanic garden and the swimming pool. If money were no object, where would you live and why? I’ve spent five years of my life living in the United States, both in Michigan and in Massachusetts, and a part of me is still there. I would love to own a house in a small New England town with loads of trees and a lake where I could go sailing. Which city is your favourite shopping destination and why? The giant shopping area on and around Shijo-Dori in Kyoto. I went there last year with my family to visit my sister. I could have spent days there browsing through gorgeous vintage kimonos and tea sets. What is your favourite stores in Iceland? Suomi PRKL! – for their lovely Nokia boots and salmiaki candy. Vínberið – for

their great selection of chocolate. Hringa – I always stop by their window to look at their jewellery. And of course all the lovely design shops! What are your favourite restaurants in Iceland? Since I am a vegetarian, I try to look for places that offer some veggie options. Bast – they have the best vegan burger in town. K-Bar – awesome Korean place with very lovely veggie options. Mandi – delicous falafel and friendly staff. Gló – vegetarian and vegan friendly. Do you have a favourite local café or bar that you go to regularly? Reykjavík Roasters, simply for their coffee, it is delicous. Where do you take out-of-town friends that are visiting Iceland? We’ve taken some of our friends visiting from abroad to the Reykjavík City Museum and they always seem to enjoy it. I think it’s the perfect place to go if you want to get a personal taste of Icelandic history. Are there any hidden spots you don’t want out-of-towners to know about? Probably some of the more excluded natural pools around Iceland. Best kept local secret? Bragðarefur at the Vesturbær ice cream shop. What is your latest local discovery? K-Bar, I had a lovely meal there recently with my friends. What’s the best landmark, building or tourist attraction in Iceland? There are so many good ones, all around Iceland. One I plan on visiting soon is Seljavalla pool. One of Iceland’s oldest swimming pools. Which person from Iceland do you most admire and why? So many, I don’t think that I could pick just one. We have incredibly inspirational people in all fields, from sports to arts. Where do you most like to travel for inspiration? I would like to visit as many places as I possibly could. As for Iceland, I grew up going to my grandfather’s summer house in Vík í Mýrdal. We still go there every summer, it is a beautiful place. What product or place can’t you live without? It would have to be Vík, I have so many great memories from there. My grandfather grew up there so he would take us around and tell us stories from the area. He would also take us for rides in his Jeep, over rivers, up mountains, to pick stones, rocks and driftwood that he then turned into lamps. I had many, many wonderful adventures in Vík and still do today every time I go there.

Christmas and New year REYKJAVÍK
New Year’s Eve – Skólavörðustígur
Christmas Christmas in Iceland is an interesting experience as this country has many old traditions for celebrating Christmas. Expect no fewer than 13 Icelandic Santa Clauses! In Iceland, they are called jólasveinn (“Yuletide Lad”). The first jólasveinn arrives 13 days before Christmas and then the others follow, one each day. After Christmas, they leave one by one. The Icelandic Christmas season lasts for 26 days. A special Icelandic custom for children is to put a shoe in the window from December 12 until Christmas Eve. If they have been good, one of the “Santas” leaves a gift – bad children receive a potato. Thorláksmessa (mass day of St Þorlákur) is celebrated on 23 December. Shops are open until 23:30 and then close for three days during Christmas. The main Christmas celebration takes place on Christmas Eve, including the gift exchange. Many attend midnight mass on the 24th.
New Year On New Year’s Eve many people attend community bonfires and exchange visits. At midnight there is a spectacular display of fireworks when almost every home in Iceland lights its own fireworks. Happy New Year is “Gleðilegt nýtt ár” in Icelandic. Nightclubs in the city are very crowded and tend to stay open until at least 5 am.

The City Hall – Reykjavík
The City Hall Reykjavik City Hall opened in 1992. The location of this stark, modern building is unique as it blends in with the environment, surrounded by water and varied bird life. On the ground floor you will find a tourist information desk and a café with a lovely view which overlooks the lake, there is also an exhibition room featuring a large relief map of Iceland which is very interesting to study prior to or after touring the island. The City Hall is open to visitors, Mon. - Fri. 8:00-19:00 and Sat. - Sun. 12:00 to 18:00.
Höfði Höfði, built in 1909, is best known as the location for the 1986 summit meeting of presidents Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, that marked the end of the Cold War. The sculpture in front of the house depicts the high seat pillars of the first Norwegian settler in Reykjavik. Initially, Höfði was the house of the French consulate in Iceland and still bears many signs of its original purpose. The house is not open to visitors, although visitors are welcome to explore the house from the outside. A visit to Höfði can be combined with a pleasant stroll along Reykjavik’s northern waterfront.

Hallgrímskirkja Hallgrímskirkja church is located at the end of the shopping street Skólavörðustígur. The 73-metre high landmark tower provides an excellent view all over Reykjavik. It is named after Reverend and hymn writer Hallgrímur Pétursson. The church tower is open everyday from 9:00 - 20:00. The church organ is the largest of its kind in Iceland.
Harpa – Concert Hall and Conference Centre Harpa is a concert hall and conference centre in Reykjavík City Centre. Harpa was designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in co-operation with Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. The structure consists of a steel framework clad with irregularly-shaped glass panels of different colours. The building is the first purpose-built concert hall in Reykjavík. It houses the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and The Icelandic Opera.
The Pearl The Pearl was built in 1988. The Dome has a 360 degree panoramic view of the city. Natural hot water is stored in the tanks below the dome which heats the city houses. Between the hot-water tanks, is a spacious atrium with a an artificial Geysir which spouts every few minutes. One of the tanks contains the Saga Museum, waxwork figures bringing the Icelandic Viking Age to life.
The Parliament The Alþingi, founded in 930 at Þingvellir, is the national parliament. Even after Iceland’s union with Norway, the Althing still held its sessions at Þingvellir until 1799, when it was discontinued for some decades. It was restored in 1844 and moved to Reykjavík, where it has resided ever since.

Icelandic Fish & Chips
The Icelandic Cuisine Iceland is well known worldwide for its fish which is pulled from unpolluted waters of the North Sea. The wild mountain lamb together with the fish makes a large part of Iceland’s organic cuisines. Lobster, ocean perch, cod, salmon, and trout are more delicious and fresher than you ever thought possible. Icelandic lamb has a distinctively “wild” flavour, reportedly due to the animals’ freewheeling and happy life roaming the countryside and eating untainted herbs. Fish is traditionally baked, salted, or thrown together with garlic and onion in a stew. Smoked salmon is a favourite, along with fish paté and pickled herring. The faint of stomach may want to avoid hákarl, shark meat that’s been buried for three months or more. The lamb dishes you’ll find in gourmet restaurants are probably the best you’ll ever have. But these newfangled lamb recipes are much different from the old, traditional dishes. Take ram’s testicles pickled in whey, for example. Or svið, a sheep’s head that’s been burned, cut in two, boiled, and either eaten fresh or pressed into jelly. And then there’s slátur, sheep innards tied up in a sheep’s stomach and cooked. Adventurous travelers should at least try these surprisingly tasty dishes, which have been sustaining Icelanders since medieval times. A swig of Icelandic spirit Brennivin (“Black Death”) or one of Iceland’s many excellent vodkas always helps for a dose of courage. For dessert, there’s skyr, best mixed with cream and topped with wild berries. Tax Free Shopping Guide

Golf in Iceland A UNIQUE GOLFING EXPERIENCE
Oddur – Urriðavöllur Golf Course
Oddur Golf Course This beautiful course was inaugurated in 1997 and is considered one of the best courses in Iceland. It is only a 15-20 minute drive from the city centre but the unique landscape offers golfers true tranquillity while playing. The course is surrounded by lava but is both easy to walk and offers competitive challenges for any golfer. The Oddur course is in our view the mandatory stop for any golfer visiting Iceland. Due to the 24 hours of sunlight during summer, playing golf in the evening or even teeing off at midnight is an incredible golfing experience. The perfect plan here is to play the front 9 at Oddur golf course, followed by a great dinner in the fascinating club house overlooking the course, and then strolling out for the back nine in the midnight sun. Oddur course and the surrounding area is a hidden treasure only 15 minutes away from Reykjavik. The course has a par of 71 and measures 5,908 m from the back tees. Oddur Golf Club offers rental clubs, buggies and carts.

The museum is divided into a couple of parts filled with interesting items related to Iceland’s history. There are tools and instruments used for fishing and farming, old handicrafts and papers, clothes and things related to superstition to name a few. A few years ago the museum opened a new exhibition house, specialized in objects which tell the story of technology and transportation and its development in Iceland in the 19th and 20th century.
