Welcome Helgi Hrannarr Jรณnsson Managing Director Global Blue Iceland

Welcome to Iceland The Icelandic economy is now recovering after the crisis in 2008 and one of the most important aspects when reviewing contributing factors is the fact that tourism is booming and now plays a significant role in our success. This is a major change for our people and the economy and we are still discovering the right approach on handling the overwhelming attention Iceland is getting as a destination. One of the most important things for us going forward is to maintain the feeling among travellers that they feel welcome and that they are experiencing something different. Our hope is that we can deliver on both. Locally there is a growing concern about protecting nature for other generations. Whilst we as a society have yet failed to find the best ways to secure continuity, it is certain that increased number of travellers are both a concern but also important to secure funding. In our business which touches retail, tourism and financial services it is a key element to secure a simple flow and process around the service we provide. The system has changed from previous years and now travellers need to retrieve their VAT refunds prior to check in which means the operation has moved from airside to landside in Keflavik International Airport. Furthermore, after 20 years of cooperation with Landsbankinn a new bank will take over the service and we are happy to confirm our agreement with Arion bank for our VAT refunds in Keflavik Airport. On the retail side we are convinced that Iceland has something different and unique to offer, from local brands and locally handcrafted design, to high tech outdoor clothing as well as high quality woollen products. International brands are surely available but not as visible as in other countries which gives you a different shopping experience. Please take a moment to enjoy the retail scene in Iceland, you will be positively surprised. We at Global Blue hope that your stay in Iceland will create new memories and exceed your expectations. Yours sincerely Helgi Hrannarr Jรณnsson, Managing Director Global Blue Iceland

Icelandic design Over the past decade Icelandic fashion design has evolved rapidly from experimental to a well defined and disciplined industry making waves on the international fashion scene. Young Icelandic designers are inspired by influences at home and from abroad which allows them to explore and play with different themes within the social and historical context of fashion. Icelandic fashion design is dynamic, playful, original and ambitious but at the same time functional and most of all wearable. Icelandic fashion design shops are mostly found in the city centre, in the side-streets, alleys and attics, so be sure to keep your eyes open.

Jewellery Icelandic jewellery designers are individual in their designs, reflecting Iceland’s magnificent landscape and nature. Some designers create pieces using Icelandic semi-precious stones; others reflect the landscape, or take their inspiration from the Icelandic Sagas and Viking Period. Creating cutting edge and unique pieces from the best materials. The result is beautiful yet rustic and wearable jewellery and pieces of art. Be sure not to leave Iceland without visiting one of the many jewellery shops in the city centre.

Icelandic woollen Evolving over 1,100 years of exposure to the sub-Arctic climate, the Iceland sheep is a unique animal. The purity of the strain has been protected by centuries of isolation and a total absence of contact with others. By the same token, the wool it produces has no counterpart anywhere. The outer fibers are long, glossy, tough and water resistant, while the inner ones are fine, soft and insulating, providing a high resistance to cold. The distinctive patterns of Icelandic knitwear are as much a part of Iceland as its mountains, waterfalls and hot springs.

Iceland Airwaves REYKJAVÍK 2ND - 6TH OF NOVEMBER 2016

RVK DNB (Reykjavik Drum n Bass) at Iceland Airwaves 2015

The coolest music festival on earth! Since the first edition was held in 1999, Iceland Airwaves has become one of the premier annual showcases for new music – Icelandic and otherwise – in the world. It’s made a heap of friends and won many fans along the way. Rolling Stone magazine called it “The hippest long weekend on the annual music-festival calendar.” Some of the world’s most exciting artists have performed there, too. The Shins, The Rapture, TV on the Radio, Florence and the Machine, Klaxons, Hot Chip, Flaming Lips, Wolf Parade, Bloc Party and Fatboy Slim have made the short hop from Europe or North America to share the stage with Iceland’s finest talents, including performers such as Björk, Sigur Rós, FM Belfast, GusGus, múm, Of Monsters and Men and Seabear, to name but a few. And when the live bands have done their thing, top DJs from all over the world spin across the city until the crack of dawn. With inclusive package tours from major international gateways starting at less than you might expect to pay for airfare alone, getting neck deep in one of the hottest, coolest music festivals anywhere is maybe just a little too easy. Poke around the site, sign up for email updates, check the prices from your neck of the woods and read about what’s in store for 2016. Then come and join the party. The City Hall – Reykjavík

The City Hall Reykjavik City Hall opened in 1992. The location of this stark, modern building is unique as it blends in with the environment, surrounded by water and varied bird life. On the ground floor you will find a tourist information desk and a café with a lovely view which overlooks the lake, there is also an exhibition room featuring a large relief map of Iceland which is very interesting to study prior to or after touring the island. The City Hall is open to visitors, Mon. - Fri. 8:00-19:00 and Sat. - Sun. 12:00 to 18:00.

Höfði Höfði, built in 1909, is best known as the location for the 1986 summit meeting of presidents Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, that marked the end of the Cold War. The sculpture in front of the house depicts the high seat pillars of the first Norwegian settler in Reykjavik. Initially, Höfði was the house of the French consulate in Iceland and still bears many signs of its original purpose. The house is not open to visitors, although visitors are welcome to explore the house from the outside. A visit to Höfði can be combined with a pleasant stroll along Reykjavik’s northern waterfront.

It houses the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and The Icelandic Opera.

Between the hot-water tanks, is a spacious atrium with a an artificial Geysir which spouts every few minutes. One of the tanks contains the Saga Museum, waxwork figures bringing the Icelandic Viking Age to life.

The Parliament The Alþingi, founded in 930 at Þingvellir, is the national parliament. Icelandic salmon served with trout roe and a smoked egg yolk

The Icelandic Cuisine Iceland is well known worldwide for its fish which is pulled from unpolluted waters of the North Sea. The wild mountain lamb together with the fish makes a large part of Iceland’s organic cuisines. Lobster, ocean perch, cod, salmon, and trout are more delicious and fresher than you ever thought possible. Icelandic lamb has a distinctively “wild” flavour, reportedly due to the animals’ freewheeling and happy life roaming the countryside and eating untainted herbs. Fish is traditionally baked, salted, or thrown together with garlic and onion in a stew. Smoked salmon is a favourite, along with fish paté and pickled herring. The faint of stomach may want to avoid hákarl, shark meat that’s been buried for three months or more. The lamb dishes you’ll find in gourmet restaurants are probably the best you’ll ever have. But these newfangled lamb recipes are much different from the old, traditional dishes. Take ram’s testicles pickled in whey, for example. Or svið, a sheep’s head that’s been burned, cut in two, boiled, and either eaten fresh or pressed into jelly. And then there’s slátur, sheep innards tied up in a sheep’s stomach and cooked. Adventurous travelers should at least try these surprisingly tasty dishes, which have been sustaining Icelanders since medieval times. A swig of Icelandic spirit Brennivin (“Black Death”) or one of Iceland’s many excellent vodkas always helps for a dose of courage. For dessert, there’s skyr, best mixed with cream and topped with wild berries. Tax Free Shopping Guide

Golf in Iceland A UNIQUE GOLFING EXPERIENCE

Oddur Golf Course – Urriðavöllur

Oddur Golf Course This beautiful course was inaugurated in 1997 and is considered one of the best courses in Iceland. It is only a 15-20 minute drive from the city centre but the unique landscape offers golfers true tranquillity while playing. The course is surrounded by lava but is both easy to walk and offers competitive challenges for any golfer. The Oddur course is in our view the mandatory stop for any golfer visiting Iceland. Due to the 24 hours of sunlight during summer, playing golf in the evening or even teeing off at midnight is an incredible golfing experience. The perfect plan here is to play the front 9 at Oddur golf course, followed by a great dinner in the fascinating club house overlooking the course, and then strolling out for the back nine in the midnight sun. Oddur course and the surrounding area is a hidden treasure only 15 minutes away from Reykjavik. The course has a par of 71 and measures 5,908 m from the back tees. Oddur Golf Club offers rental clubs, buggies and carts.

Reykjavík THERMAL POOLS AND BATHS

Laugardalslaug – Reykavík

If you want to meet the locals Hot-spring water is one of Iceland’s primary natural resources. Icelanders were quick to realize the medicinal benefits of thermal water, which is partly responsible for their longevity and good health. Swimming in thermal water under a bare sky while breathing in clean, fresh air is one of the best exercises available anywhere. Most important, however, is the delightful feeling one gets from moving and stretching in a pool that is kept at a constant temperature of 29°C (84°F). Surveys show that 94% of foreigners who visit the thermal baths and pools in Reykjavík said that the experience had a positive effect on their health and well-being. One of the most popular features of Reykjavík’s thermal baths and pools are the hot pots, small pools of water is diverse sizes and shapes with water temperatures ranging from 37°C-42°C (98°F-111°F). Hot pots are an important meeting place - a social experience - where people often get into topical discussions. Laugardalslaug is the city’s largest pool with extensive facilities, located in Laugardalur Valley. Its facilities include a 50m outdoor and indoor pool, outdoor children’s pool, numerous “hot pots“, steam bath and two waterslides. Reykjavik’s thermal pools are open from early morning until late in the evening. There is simply no cheaper or healthier way to experience Reykjavik and to get to know the locals!

Akureyri NORTH ICELAND

Akureyri by Night

Hlíðarfjall – Ski Resort

There is a contiguous open area around Akureyri where the biosphere and landscape are extremely diverse, and vegetation in many places is especially lush. Within the Akureyri town limits there are many interesting recreational areas and hiking paths, such as the delta of the Eyjafjarðará river, Krossanes-borgir north of the Glerárþorp area and especially Kjarnaskógur, which is part of a forested, recreational area planned to surround the town of Akureyri.

Old Town If you take a stroll south from Akureyri’s town centre you will have the opportunity to walk through the history of early Akureyri. Among the sights are the old Theatre, the old Primary School , and the Old Hospital built in 1835.

The Botanical Garden The Botanical Garden is known far and wide for its beautiful walking paths and luxuriant flora. One of Akureyri’s gems, it was founded by women in 1911, and it contains nearly every plant found in Iceland as well as about 4,000 foreign plants.

Akureyrarkirkja The Akureyri church is the symbol of Akureyri. It is a Lutheran church designed by architect Guðjón Samúelsson and consecrated in 1940. The central stained glass window above the altar formed part of a set which was destroyed in an air raid on Coventry Cathedral in England.

Hlíðarfjall – Ski Resort Situated just 5 km outside of the town, Hlíðarfjall has been one of the prime skiing areas of Iceland. The hallmarks of Hlíðarfjall are high quality snow, extensive cross country trails and exciting ski slopes with breathtaking views of Eyjafjörður. The elevation of the site goes from 500 m to 1000 m above sea level. All the main runs are floodlit, allowing evening skiing. Tax Free Shopping Guide

The Peace Tower

R

VE ÐA TA ÚS

The Imagine Peace Tower is a memorial to John Lennon from his widow, Yoko Ono, located on Viðey Island outside Reykjavík. It consists of a tall “tower of light”, projected from a white stone monument that has the words “Imagine Peace” carved into it in 24 languages. These words, and the name of the tower, are a reference to Lennon’s peace anthem, Imagine. The Tower consists of 15 searchlights with prisms that act as mirrors, reflecting the column of light vertically into the sky from a 10-metre wide wishing well. It often reaches cloudbase and indeed can be seen penetrating the cloud cover. On a clear night it appears to reach an altitude of at least 4000m. The power for the lights is provided by Iceland’s unique geo-thermal energy grid. Buried underneath the light tower are upward of 500,000 written wishes that Ono gathered over the years in another project, called “Wish Trees”. Ono plans to have the tower lit every year from the 9th of October, Lennon’s birthday, through 8th of December, the date he was shot. Iceland was selected for the project because of its beauty and its eco-friendly use of geothermal energy. Construction of the tower started on 9th of October, 2006 when Ono dedicated the location, and it was officially unveiled on the same date in 2007. Yoko Ono said on the day of the inauguration that the tower was the best thing that she and John had ever done. Tax Free Shopping Guide
