RIECHEN Einst war der Norden der Insel von einem dichten Lorbeerwald bewachsen. Los Tilos de Moya ist das, was heute davon übrig ist. Der Geruch der feuchten Erde könnte sich nicht stärker von der trockenen Luft im Süden unterscheiden. Im Osten hatte meine Oma ein Haus am Meer.

Wenn ich heute an einem sonnigen Nachmittag dorthin zurückkehre, empfängt mich der Geruch wie ein alter Freund, den ich lange nicht gesehen habe.

SEHEN Vom Roque Nublo reicht der Blick über die Küste hinaus: In der Ferne ragt Teneriffas Teide aus den Wolken hervor. Die Küste von Agaete schlängelt sich wie ein Drachenschwanz. Entlang der Straße kann man 40 Kilometer fahren, ohne ein einziges Gebäude zu sehen.

SMELL The laurel woods of Los Tilos de Moya are a remnant of what was once a thick forest covering most of the north of the island. The scent of its moist soil couldn’t be a starker contrast to the dry air in the south. My gran used to have a house on the eastern shore.

When I return on a sunny afternoon, the smell of the sea welcomes me like an old friend I haven’t seen for ages.

If you hike to the base of Roque Nublo, you can see as far as Tenerife, with Mt. Teide poking out above the clouds on the horizon. When you drive along the shore of Agaete – shaped like a dragon’s tail – you can go for 40 kilometres without seeing ▸ a single building.

HÖREN Jährlich im August tanzen und singen wir uns beim Fiesta de la RamaFestival gemeinsam die Seele aus dem Leib. Dabei rascheln wir mit den Zweigen, die wir die Nacht zuvor im Tamadaba-Hochland gesammelt haben. Das ist einzigartig. Genauso wie die Stille in Maspalomas. In den Senken der Dünen verschluckt der Sand völlig das Rauschen von Wind und Meer, das auf ihren Höhen tobt.

HEAR The night before the Fiesta de la Rama festival, we collect branches from the heights of Tamadaba forest.

When we dance with them, their rustling sound merges with the chants of the crowd. It’s just as unique as the silence you experience between the dunes in Maspalomas, where the sand swallows the sounds of the raging wind and the churning sea above.

Je kleiner und schrumpeliger die Kartoffeln, desto besser schmecken die papas arrugadas mit der scharfen roten Mojosoße. Ein Gedicht im Fischrestaurant Amigo Camilo in Las Palmas. Nachtisch gibt es am anderen Ende der Stadt, im Mercado de Vegueta. Kleine süße Bananen, direkt von der Insel. Ich kaufe meine beim Obsthändler José y Alicia.

Die Freundlichkeit dort versetzt mich stets in gute Laune.

The smaller and more wrinkled the potatoes are, the tastier. For dessert, I head to the Mercado de Vegueta at the other end of town, where José y Alicia sell our sweet-tasting, locally grown bananas. They’re so friendly, ▸ I always leave in a good mood.

TASTEN Die Gesteinsschichten am Punta del Caletón waren einst ein heißer Lavastrom, der im kalten Atlantik erstarrte. Ihre fein-raue Oberfläche stimuliert den Tastsinn genau wie das grobkörnige Salz in der Saline Las Salinas de Arinaga. Ihr Besitzer Roque Viera versteht das Meer und verkauft sein hochwertiges Produkt auch zum Mitnehmen.

The peculiarly shaped rock formations there feel truly out of this world. The coarse salt at Las Salinas de Arinaga. also stimulates the senses. xxxx Roque still produces it according to family tradition for sale – his knowledge of the sea is as deep as the ocean.
