to try and educate myself about chemotherapy. I had to be very careful in this endeavor, because I have a tendency to overdose on information when I am researching something, especially if it is medically related. For example, my OB/ GYN had to instruct me to throw out the “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” book during my first pregnancy because I was driving him insane with questions such as, “I read in the book that hiccups could be a symptom of a knot in the umbilical cord and last night I had really bad hiccups, but then I wasn’t sure if the book meant it was bad for me to have hiccups, or for the baby to have hiccups, so I’m thinking we should do another ultrasound just to be sure.” Jeez. I’m lucky he still stuck it out with me until the delivery. I especially had to steer clear of the Internet, as it is an endless source of frightening information for any kind of condition. For every piece of valuable information I might find, there are ten pieces of scary anecdotal evidence regarding a horrible side effect of chemotherapy. As my OB/GYN told me, “There are some things you are just better off not knowing.” I made a conscious decision not to binge and purge on every result from a Google search of the word chemotherapy, and stick with the information I received directly from my oncologist.
Chemo Brain is a Terrible Thing to Waste By Jennifer Alderman Here I am receiving my chemotherapy.

I have to be honest. Until I started taking chemotherapy, I didn’t really understand chemotherapy. I knew a little about how the treatments were given, and had a vague understanding that the chemo drugs somehow killed cancer. I also had a vision in my head based on what I had seen in movies and read in books, which is that chemo patients spend most of their time puking and sweating and sleeping. So when I was facing my first treatment of chemo, like with so many other experiences I’ve encountered since being diagnosed with cancer, I was scared to death.
My oncologist and I had decided that the best course of chemotherapy for me was a combination of three different drugs to be administered over 16 rounds of treatment. First I would receive four rounds of the drugs Adriamycin and Cytoxan, and then 12 rounds of the drug Taxol. Cancer grows through rapid abnormal cell division, and chemotherapy works by killing those fast-replicating cells. Unfortunately, the chemo drugs don’t know the difference between healthy and diseased cells, and this is where all the potentially scary side effects from chemo come into play. The healthy cells affected by chemo include white and red blood cells and platelets. A decrease in white blood cells increases a person’s susceptibility to infection, and a decrease in red blood cells can contribute to fatigue. The obliteration of rapidly dividing cells is the culprit in hair loss, which, as I discussed in my last article, is the side effect most commonly associated with chemotherapy. Other side effects include nausea and vomiting, mouth sores, nasal congestion, constipation and/or diarrhea, and loss of appetite. I know, it all sounds like a real party!
So the first thing I did to overcome my fear before my first chemo infusion was

The bottom line from what I learned was this: chemotherapy drugs are not fuzzy kitten gentle drugs, they are big, bad, biker gang tough drugs designed to kill everything in their path. So I certainly did not expect to feel like running a marathon after receiving my first chemo infusion, but even after all my research I still wasn’t totally sure what to expect. The one big caveat that everyone told me was that everyone has different body chemistry, and so everyone has the opportunity to react differently to the chemo. The other thing I was reminded over and over was that oncologists have become very good at managing many of the chemo side effects with very sophisticated drugs. The first round was pretty rough, and it took a few days to work out the right balance of medicines to keep me from being sick.
high point: I semi-understand the plot of “Lost.” And I’ve managed to not think too much about the other potential side effects that I didn’t discuss previously that could result from chemotherapy, namely heart failure and developing leukemia. I decided that those are almost too scary to think about, especially when I’m already dealing with the scary notion of having cancer. My old OB would be proud that I’ve finally taken his advice and agreed, “. . . there are some things you are better off not knowing.”
At this point I’ve finished the four rounds of A/C and one round of Taxol, and like just about every other experience in life, there have been good days and bad days. I’ve experienced many of the side effects that I read about, but have managed to escape a good number of them as well. I’ve had some moments of being the puking, sweating, sleeping chemo patient from the movies, but I’ve also gone for a few long runs and a few much-needed “Mom’s Nights Out.” Maybe the most irritating of all the side effects has been “Chemo Brain,” an actual condition where the patient experiences forgetfulness and short term memory loss from the chemo. The low point: stopping with my underwear around my knees and momentarily not being able to remember if I was in the middle of putting them on or taking them off. The

The TS Alliance is making JUHDW VWULGHV WR ÂżQG D FXUH IRU this unknown to many, yet relatively common disease. TSC (Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, commonly called TS) is a genetic disorder that affects one out of every 6,000 live births each year. It is more prevalent than cystic ÂżEURVLV RU /RX *HKULJÂśV disease. The TS Alliance of Indiana hosts the Step Forward to Cure Tuberous Sclerosis walk to raise awareness and funds to help research HIIRUWV WR ÂżQG D FXUH Âł7KLV is just one way we can help out,â€? says Susan Campbell, Carmel resident and Chairperson for the TS Alliance in Indiana. “It is a fun family
Campbell is no stranger to the disease. Her son, Matthew, who is now seven, was born 10 weeks early because of tumors in his heart. TS causes non-cancerous tumors to form in major organs, such as the brain, lungs, kidneys, skin, liver and eyes. TS has a wide spectrum of severity, from needing total care to going completely unnoticed (depending on where the tumors are located in the organs). In Matthew’s case, he suffered many complications of TS at birth. Though the cardiac tumors have diminished, multiple tumors have developed in Matthew’s brain, causing seizures, developmental delays, and autism. Fortunately, though, Matthew goes to school every day and is a student in the Life Skills Program. “He is our miracle child, Campbell explains. “We had never heard of TS before Matthew was born. He’s been through so much, but he’s still such a happy boy. Campbell went on to say that the TS Alliance, the only venue for housing comprehensive TS support and facilitation of research, had provided them with many tools needed to educate themselves, as well as their family and friends.

to the discovery of a protein pathway responsible for the symptoms of TS. “We are steps away from finding a cure,” says Campbell. “It is just amazing they have come so far, so fast.” One big step the TS Alliance of Indiana takes is the annual walk, which raised over 50K last year from personal and business donations and a silent auction conducted at the walk. “We are a small, but mighty group,” says Mindi Schmidt, a Fishers mom of a son with TS who helps organize the walk. “Last year we pulled all our resources together and made a successful event.”
and is being treated for seizures. Schmidt continues to say that Carter is doing really well at this point. “The real saving grace for us is having a great support group like the TS Alliance of Indiana. We are very lucky.”
This year the walk is May 1 at Forest Park in Noblesville. Registration is at 11 a.m. and the walk will begin at noon followed by lunch for all participants. Bub’s Burgers, a Carmel favorite, will be providing the tasty lunch. There will be a kid’s corner with appearances by Mickey Mouse and Elmo! The fun will continue with games, prizes, face painting, balloon clown, magician and a live concert by Ruditoonz. “The walk is just under two miles and is very family friendly,” explains Schmidt. “We will either have a silent auction again, or hold a raffle. However, our main fundraising is done through online donations by family/friends at our site www.StepForwardtoCureTSC.org, through various sponsorship opportunities at the walk, or by donations collected by volunteers who ‘cold call’ on businesses.”
“It takes a community effort to make things happen,” Campbell says about being a part of the TS Alliance. “It’s definitely a group effort.” To help volunteer for the walk, contact Susan Campbell at sucampbe@gmail.com. If you are interested in walking go to www.StepForwardtoCureTSC.org to register. More information about TS can be found at www.tsalliance.org.
At the other end of the TS spectrum, there’s Carter, Schmidt’s son who is now three and has mild symptoms of TS. He was diagnosed at one day old. “We, too, had never heard of the disease,” Schmidt said. “Over the past few years, we have discovered Carter has tumors in his brain, heart, kidneys, eyes and skin.” As of now, he only battles mildly delayed speech

To further drive home the point of serving the city of Carmel, Pastor Kirk asks the question, “If Christ Community ceased to exist today would it matter tomorrow?” Beyond all of this CCC also has many other ministries. They offer Sunday school for the entire family (children-adults). For middle school and high school students, CCC offers a great youth program that involves retreats and mission trips. CCC also is a hub for a robust college campus ministry called Campus Outreach (www.coindy.org). Josh Christensen, an attendee of CCC, describes one of the most important characteristics of the church as a “body of believers approaching our human weaknesses with God’s honest truth, but gaining an understanding for the grace that heals our most painful imperfections.”

Christ Community Church By Jonathan Haag Twenty years ago Pastor Tim Kirk and his wife Sally Kirk moved their family to Carmel to plant a network of churches for the Presbyterian Church in America. They started Christ Community Church (CCC) back in 1991. CCC first started meeting in the Clay Middle School cafeteria and then moved to their current location on 131st and Gray several years back. I recently had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Pastor Kirk about the mission of CCC and how that mission relates to the city of Carmel. Pastor Kirk tells me that the

mission of CCC is threefold, “To exalt God’s glory, to equip God’s people, and to extend God’s Kingdom.” CCC is accomplishing this mission in a variety of ways, impacting everyone from young kids to the elderly and to those in the city of Carmel and those on the other side of the world. Pastor Kirk continues by saying, “As we approach our 20th anniversary, we are really trying to think through what it means to be a church not just in Carmel, but for Carmel.”

The mother and daughter team do their own fittings and alterations in the store. Not only do they sell bridal gowns, they also carry dresses for mothers of the bride and groom, bridesmaids and flower girls. Grooms and male attendants can also rent tuxedos at Brides of Carmel. The grooms’ tuxes are free when the remainder of the wedding party rents from the boutique.
Gifts of Memory Once you’ve said “I do,” your bridal gown is usually cleaned, sealed and packed away in a closet, never to be seen again. Peggy Latta, owner of Heirloom Textile Art, will create a miniature replica of your wedding gown that can be displayed in your home to remind you of your wedding day. Peggy adds, “It is my goal to create a miniature ensemble that is nearly identical to the original, as well as a piece that stands alone as a beautiful work of art.”
Using your materials, or similar fabrics and a 10.5 inch tall dress form, she captures the details of your gown and bouquet with her meticulous stitches and applies the bead work and details by hand. Over the past twenty years, Peggy estimates that she has created close to 500 gowns. These make a treasured keepsake and gift for an anniversary, birthday or holiday and can be a gift for a recent bride, or a woman who has been married for years.

Green Business Guide In fact, he is one of only four builders in Indiana that had built LEED certified residential homes. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is an ecology-oriented building certification program run under the auspices of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

But why does LEED matter and why should we care? “Once I realized all the benefits of building green, it became a ‘no brainer.’ I was sold and became very passionate about it,” said Frank Redavide. “We not only improve the energy efficiency of your home, we build a highperformance green building, which means you will enjoy better indoor air by not having toxic fumes emitting from materials on your floor and in your walls, save money on water usage, enjoy low maintenance landscaping, and generally build a structurally stronger building.”

The answer is very simple, ”It is the economy, stupid.” Most fascinating is the fact that you get all of the savings and additional health benefits for the price of a conventionally built home. Sound too good to be true? Check it out for yourself by contacting Frank and talking to his past customers. Castalia Homes will also work with you to make your existing home a high performance green building.
Frank Redavide, the owner of Castalia Homes, started to build custom homes in the Fishers and Carmel areas seven years ago. He quickly became known in the community as a “green builder.”

Holder Mattress Lauren Taylor, despite her young look, is the third generation of local family business, Holder Mattress. She’s been managing their Kokomo factory and two retail locations on a daily basis for the last six years. Holder Mattress was started by Lauren’s grandfather in 1947, and has been manufacturing and selling high quality hand-made mattresses locally ever since. Relentless focus on product quality has been one of the main reasons for the stellar success of the company throughout the years. “The number one thing that sets us apart is the highest material quality and durability of our mattresses,” says Lauren. Indeed, Holder Mattresses are two-sided, made with natural material and coil springs that will last without deforming over 15 years. The company recycles over 95% of the scrap from mattress production.
Holder Mattress Lauren Taylor, owner www.holdermattress.com
In July 2007, the federal government issued a regulation that had set very stringent standards for flame retardant qualities of mattress fabrics. The mattress manufacturers were required to use various chemicals, or flame retardant fabrics in order to comply with the regulation. The least expensive method and most common in the industry was to spray the mattresses with boric acid and antimony trioxide. Boric acid is a poisonous pesticide that effectively kills roaches, silverfish, ants, fleas, palmetto bugs and water bugs. Antimony trioxide is a known carcinogen. Holder Mattress decided not to utilize the least expensive way, but to retain their high quality standards that were in line with the family social values. “It is my guys in the factory that are going to be handling those chemicals. They are my family. I do not want them to be exposed to something that is so dangerous nor do I want my customers to be exposed to the same danger,” says Lauren. Instead, Holder Mattresses are built of nontoxic natural materials such as wool and latex fibers. These materials are inherently flame retardant, hypoallergenic and do not collect dust mites.

Green Business Guide ent load that comes from leaves, topsoil and fertilizer runoff contributes to rampant algae growth. The good news is that you can help! Since algae are particularly keen on phosphorus, you can stop its growth by using phosphorus-free fertilizers and demanding zero phosphate lawn treatments on your established lawns. Curb Appeal Outdoor Services has been serving the upper North side for over a decade. They provide most landscaping and lawn care services, from leaf removal to landscape design and installation for residential and commercial clients. “Al Peterson, the company owner, will bend over backwards to meet customer needs,” Mike Meyer, the company manager says. Despite their low-key profile, the company has been an industry pioneer by introducing conventional phosphorus-free fertilizers and organic fertilizers in their lawn treatments.

The most amazing thing is that it does not cost you an extra dime to use a phosphorus free fertilizer lawn treatment. The only thing you need to do is to call and ask for the zero phosphate lawn treatments. “The important thing for Geist Lake residents is to realize that they can do their part by making the conscious choice of fertilizers to use,” says Meyer.
What can you do today to rescue Geist Lake from algae with no extra out of pocket cost? As many of you know, Geist Lake is suffocating from the presence of bluegreen algae. The high nutri-

Team Green Dentistry Steve Green has been practicing dentistry for over 25 years on the Northeast side of Indianapolis. A former NBA player playing for IU College team first and then for Pacers, Steve is the first “Green” dentist in town. Steve has always been active in the community. Green is president of Donated Dentist Services that donates services to low income Hoosiers. Steve had his defining “green” moment during a Thomas Friedman speech on his latest book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution — and How It Can Renew America. “Green recalls, “Friedman said, it is time...” to become patriotic and lead the green revolution in America.” From that day, Green became a relentless advocate for implementing green practices in his dental clinic.
“We also are starting a program where we will be donating a percentage from patients’ visits to a designated charity. My hope is to attract people from the community that share my values of sustainability and giving back,” says Green.
Apart from not using amalgam mercury containing fillings for the last 15 years, Team Green dental practice started their path to sustainability by using local suppliers for its products and services; reducing waste to the minimum by reusing and recycling; using biodegradable supplies and not using chemicals to sterilize instruments.

Green Business Guide one was on welfare. People die of old age. These exceptional circumstances prompted an investigation by a group of physicians and a sociologist. The doctors looked at different factors that might affect the health and longevity of Rosetans, such as: diet and exercise, genetics, and regional environmental factors. They found that none of these factors were any different from the average resident of Pennsylvania. What doctors realized was that the secret of Roseto wasn’t linked to diet, exercise, genes or location. It was the Roseto community itself. If you walked around the town, you would understand what I mean. You would see Rosetans visiting one another, stopping to chat or cooking for one another in their back yard. You would see how many homes had three generations living under the same roof and how much respect the grandparents commanded. You would learn that there are twenty-two civic organizations in a town of fewer than two thousand people.

By transplanting their culture and way of life from southern Italy to the hills of Pennsylvania, the Rosetans created a powerfully sustainable and tightly knit community capable to support them economically and insulate from the destructive pressures and stress of the modern world.
I would like to tell you a story about a profound phenomenon that happened in a small town founded by immigrants from Roseto, a village in Italy. The town is called Roseto as well, only it is in Pennsylvania. In that town, virtually no one under fifty-five has died of a heart attack or showed any signs of heart disease. There was no suicide, no alcoholism, no drug addiction, and very little crime. Few kids left the town as they grew up and no
We want to make our communities to be more like Roseto. Businesses and residents must join forces, to make the Local movement a reality. Indiana Green Business and Community Alliance is a local organization whose purpose is to engage residents to support local green businesses in order to build economically selfreliant and healthy communities that secure prosperity to our families. Lena Lucas has also developed Indiana Green Pages – www.myhomegreenpages.com the online directory of Indiana green products and services that help local residents find local green businesses to support local economy.

A Wild Delight on 116th By Jen Alderman The restaurant industry is a tough business, and there are so many elements that contribute to the success of a new establishment. There’s location, experience, atmosphere, and most importantly, good food. Naomi & Robert Liu, the owners of the new restaurant Wild Ginger on 116th, have managed to balance all these elements perfectly with delicious results. “We live in Hamilton County, so we were drawn to this location because of the proximity to where our home is,” comments Naomi Liu. “This location is perfectly situated between Carmel and Geist, and right in the middle of Fishers, so it is perfect for attracting foot traffic.”
says Naomi Liu. With the excellent balance of great food and a pleasing atmosphere, the Lius have already far surpassed this goal.
Positioned on the corner of the Fishers Town Commons on 116th Street, the dining room of Wild Ginger has a very modern and clean vibe, decorated in rich reds and calming tans with the outlines of giant wild ginger blossoms adorning the walls. The newest addition to the space is a large vibrant chandelier handmade by the Lius from origami cranes.
SUSHI
We started our lunch with a crisp green salad and miso soup. The peanut dressing for the salad was tangy and tart, which set off the cool greens. Fans of the menu at Wasabi, which the Lius previously owned, will be very pleased to find many of their popular rolls on Wild Ginger’s list, including the mistake roll ($7) which Liu often describes to customers as Sushi 101. This spicy tuna roll pairs the crunch of tempura with the heat of the spicy sauce and is a terrific introduction to sushi for a novice. My order of the chicken teriyaki combination platter ($10) arrived with a generous portion of chicken, tempura vegetables, and a California roll. The chicken was aromatic and the roll was fresh and beautifully plated. However, the highlight of the meal can be summed up in two words: Spiderman roll. The Spiderman roll ($15) contains softshell crab, hot peppers, and ponzu sauce. It is indeed the superhero of sushi rolls! The subtle smokiness is delicately layered over slightly sweet and savory flavors, and the crispy crab is an excellent partner to the soft rice. Our meal ended with a dessert treat called banana tempura with ice cream ($8), two scoops of ice cream with your choice of ginger, mango, plum, green tea, coffee, or red bean nestled on top of crunchy banana tempura drizzled with honey.

Malbec 2008 - Argentina - 91 Rating! "Dense...with notes of blackberry, earth, roasted meats, and a hint of barbecue spice, this wine exhibits great fruit, delicious, full-bodied texture, silky tannins, and a long finish. It does taste more like a $30-50 bottle of Malbec than one that can be purchased for $15." Robert Parker Jr.
Shiraz 2008 - Australia - 90 Rating! "It has oodles of fruit, a big, thick, juicy mouth-feel, velvety tannins, and lots of creme de cassis, blackberry, peppery, and tar-like notes in a deep, full-bodied, lush style that should drink nicely for 3-4 years." Robert Parker Jr.
Primitivo 2007 - Italy - 89 Rating! "Lots of pepper, roasted herbs, meat juices...this spicy wine has in inky ruby/purple color and lots of body. It comes across like a rustic Zinfandel, but with loads of character and personality, displaying an almost savage intensity to its flavors. This is a wild, adventuresome wine. Bring on the Pizza!"
