Breast Cancer Diagnosis Puts My Life on ‘Pause’ By Jen Alderman
will not work without me. I have too much work left to do here.” I allowed myself to dwell in that pity for the night. I felt I had earned that much simply by having cancer, but then the next day I focused myself. I am too busy to be sick. I do have too much work left here. I’m not happy about having breast cancer, but maybe this is an opportunity to slow things down, maybe this is someone’s way of telling me to take my foot off the gas and make sure I’m getting the job done right. Cancer may have hit my life’s “pause” button, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to let it hit “stop.”
So often, I feel like my life is moving in fast forward. One minute I’m graduating college, the next second I’m getting married and buying a house and starting a career. One minute I’m terrified as I bring my first baby home from the hospital, a few moments later I’m feeling a similar terror as I put that baby on the school bus for the first time. Bang, zoom, zip. I’m trying as best I can to grab on to memories as they fly past, stuff them in my pocket and hope like hell that they survive long enough for things to slow down so that at some point I can enjoy them. On Friday, October 30, 2009, it only took six words for my life to stop moving in fast forward and come to a screeching halt. When the doctor said, “I’m so sorry, you have cancer,” I could feel my world stop spinning on its axis; I could feel gravity firmly planting me in place. I am 34, I have three kids under the age of 5 and a husband who works 80-hour weeks as a resident. I thought I was too young to be sick. I thought I was too healthy to be ill. I thought I was moving too fast for cancer to catch me. I was wrong.
Jen Alderman is pictured here with her daughter Riley. A 34-year-old wife and mother of three, Jen was recently diagnosed with breast cancer just before Thanksgiving. She will be blogging about her journey and submitting monthly updates to the Carmel Community Newsletter.
To show your support of Jen in her journey, visit her blog jensmorningcoffee.blogspot. com.
I had found a lump in my left breast while doing a self-exam in the shower, and although I briefly thought about waiting to see if it would go away on its own, I thought better of it and called to make an appointment with my doctor. The following week I saw her, and after examining me, she didn’t think it “felt like cancer” but that it should be checked out further just to be safe. Four days later I had a mammogram, then a diagnostic ultrasound with a radiologist who had the sad job of saying those 6 six words that changed my life, that transformed me from a busy mom and wife to a breast cancer patient. When you are told that you have cancer, regardless of how old you are, you can’t help but feel like you have been handed a death sentence. When you are told you have cancer and you are still deeply entrenched in raising small children, you feel like your whole family has received a death sentence. I lay in bed that night after receiving the diagnosis of breast cancer and cried, thinking, “I can’t die, this family

An Eventful Carmel-Based Business of Vision Event Management in Carmel, Indiana. After 16 years in the promotions, advertising and marketing business, Graves will tell you that attention to detail and follow through are critical to pulling off the next big event. Graves learned this working in the trenches at Rockford Lightning, Crackers Comedy Club, Adam’s Mark Hotel, Entertainment Marketing and 99.5 WZPL. He followed up those jobs with positions for the 500 Festival and the MiniMarathon. He then parlayed those years of experience into Vision Event Management, opening his business in 2006 and hiring Chad Antcliff as Vice President of Events in 2008. Whether planning for a new event or gearing up for an already established event, Vision Event Management prides itself on bringing fresh vision and ideas to the table to bring about fresh results. “We can talk with people from any standpoint of where they are [in the planning process],” said Graves. Jeff Graves and Chad Antcliff organize big events all over the United States, including a few here in Carmel and northeast Indianapolis.
By Jane VanOsdol For example, Vision Event Management excels at taking an event that perhaps hasn’t met the expectations of the planners in years past and revamping it to produce better results.
Anyone who has ever planned a big event knows it doesn’t just happen. Just ask Jeff Graves, President
Graves and Antcliff handle festivals, parades, nonprofit events, concerts, golf outings and scavenger hunts. They have extensive experience planning 5K races and mini-marathons. As a matter of fact, they were the brains and experience that put together the Geist Half Marathon in May.

Geist is a favorite race for them. “Geist is outstanding, being that this event has only been around for two years, and it now has over 6,000 people and 700 plus volunteers … it has raised great money, gives back to the schools and has great course support. It’s unbelievable what they’ve done in just two years,” said Graves.

Over the years they have come to expect the unexpected when planning an event. Road construction, date changes and redoing signs are all things that often happen and necessitate regrouping and Plan B. It’s just a part of the business. And, interesting things often happen on the day of the events as well. Especially memorable was the time during the Madison Mini-Marathon in Madison, Wisconsin when a flock of wild turkeys decided to run the race course with the runners. While Vision Event Management plans events across the country, they are hoping to focus more on events close to home. “We love Indianapolis and the Carmel area and want to do more things and come up with more fun things for the community to do,” said Graves. As the business grows, Graves is looking for a college student to intern with their company. A semester long internship would be fine, but a year-long internship would be better just because of the length of time it often takes to plan an event. Any interested students can contact Graves through his website at www.VisionEventManagement.com.
things matter to us,” says Graves. “It’s important to us that the participants walk away with a great experience ... we really try to make a difference when we work on an event,” said Graves.
Overall, both Graves and Antcliff work hard to make each event they manage the best it can be—and better than the last one. “Our goal is to produce great events, and the little

“Something’s Coming” in 2010 that time of year when the world is ripe for change and resolutions abound for the coming year. In Carmel, there will be lots of interesting changes ahead — changes that will impact a variety of businesses, organizations and the users of their services. We talked to a handful of local organizations to learn what’s coming down the pike for them in 2010. At the Hamilton County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Sarah Buckner reports their marketing campaign focusing on “8 Great Towns/1 Destination,” has been highly successful in spite of last year’s uncertain economy. The HCCVB measures that success by the dramatic increase in website visits and the increase in room demand for Hamilton County hotels. “We started blogging and doing a lot of social media this year,” says Buckner. Her blog, found at blog.8greattowns. com, has become a pivotal tool in helping search engines direct traffic to Hamilton County. Adding to the synergy is a regular Wednesday blog feature highlighting 8 great things to do in Hamilton County over the following weekend. Bringing more visitors to Hamilton County is part of the HCCVB goal. According to Buckner, “In 2010 we will focus on local dining and unique places to eat.” Part of their print campaign promoting great dining in Hamilton County will feature Carmel native and Food Network regular, Ted Allen.
By Denise Reiter Sarah Buckner, communications coordinator for the Hamilton County Convention and Visitors Bureau, says that online social media and blogging have helped bring in visitors to Carmel.
Take a walk or a drive through Carmel and be a firsthand witness to the mounting excitement that’s building in our city. Some days you can all but hear that song of anticipation and expectancy from West Side Story, reverberating throughout the streets:
To give you a sense of the impact HCCVB’s work has, consider the economic impact of these numbers: 1.8 million visitors to Hamilton County, with visitor spending of $244 million. Think that’s impressive? The 2009 numbers are not yet available, but are anticipated to be even more substantial. In 2010, the HCCVB will be opening a new welcome center in Noblesville. This is in addition to the one at the Fishers train station and one next to their office on Main Street in Carmel.
“Could it be? Yes it could. Something’s coming, something good.” It’s almost a palpable rhythm that pounds under your feet when you see the change and growth happening all around as Carmel moves into a new year.
When asked why people want to visit here, Buckner replies, “Big city features but with small town charm. We offer a safe, unique place to visit and bring your family to.” By all accounts, it’s going to be a banner year for HCCVB. Accessibility is the buzz word for 2010 at the Monon Center

and Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation. Several new developments are in the works according to Michael Klitzing, Assistant Director at Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CPRP). “Our park board has been working with a consultant to develop a business plan to help guide the future. Part of that includes improvements to the Monon pass that allows use of all areas of the facilities,” says Klitzing. “We’ve traditionally used an a la carte system at the Monon Center. Based on feedback from the community, we are transitioning [over the next 2 years] to a more encompassing pass.” In 2010, the purchase of the new pass will give you access to nearly all the services the Monon offers, including the indoor fitness center, indoor and outdoor aquatics, and the gymnasium. Anyone who currently has the Monon pass will be able to use the KidZone for free. If you hold a household pass, you will have unlimited participation in all of the group fitness classes, including water aerobics. “It’s a more encompassing option than what we’ve traditionally offered,” says Klitzing. “We are enhancing opportunities for our guests and pass holders.”
This new arrangement for library users will expand the resources available to patrons and eliminate the need for Hamilton County residents to purchase a PLAC (Public Library Access Card) to check out materials at the following Hamilton County libraries: Sheridan, Westfield, Hamilton North (Cicero/Atlanta), Hamilton East (Noblesville/Fishers), and Carmel Clay.
Other changes in the new year, based on customer feedback, include the introduction of Little Seeds Preschool in the fall, with preschool opportunities during the day for families with younger children. Also, swim lessons will be available on a more flexible time schedule, including Sundays.
Kids will be kids.
Klitzing states that they are receptive to ideas and feedback from the community. “We’re a community based facility and it’s important to understand what all the citizens of Carmel and Clay Township want, but especially those who use our services and have their memberships with us. We’re dedicated to providing a high quality experience for family fun.” ARRISON

Carmel native and television personality Ted Allen will be featured in a Hamilton County Convention & Visitors Bureau ad campaign this year.
As in prior years, the library plans to stay connected to the needs and desires of its patrons. Smietana states, “We are always doing strategic planning and that involves surveying our patrons. We encourage comment cards and request for purchase cards asking for specific items or books. Library patrons are excited about the expanded benefits and services being offered in 2010.”
Other items on the 2010 agenda at the Carmel library are the installation of a new phone system to help staff work more efficiently. Also, a new RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system will be implemented to more fully automate the check in/check out system. RFID will speed up and allow greater accuracy in all processes involving the library’s inventory. Both initiatives are designed to better serve library patrons.
ADDBAC (Arts & Design District Business Association of Carmel) looks forward to strengthening its merchant community in the new year. Started in 2009, Second Saturdays is the brainchild of the association designed to encourage people to come and walk the Carmel Arts & Design District on the second Saturday of each month. During this event there are entertainment activities and special discounts that are offered by Carmel businesses. “We have about 45 businesses in the association within the arches,” says co-founders Bernie Szuhaj and Jill Zaniker. The duo explains that ADDBAC, in addition to supporting the growth and development of all businesses in the Arts & Design District, is active in philanthropy.

MovieMark’s Top Ten Movies of 2009 By Mark Dubec
BALL STATE+FISHERS
Over the past few months I have been watching more movies than any human being ever should. I’m a movie critic, so it comes with the job; however, I’m also a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association. Here are my Top Ten Movies of 2009. 10. Everybody’s Fine-Robert De Niro stars in a moving drama about forgiveness and family. 9. The Messenger-Woody Harrelson reminds us what a great actor he is in this military drama. 8. State of Play-Exciting and well-done political thriller with Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck. 7. Star Trek-An updated version of the classic series breathes new life into the characters and franchise. It was simply fun to watch.
5. District 9-Delivers a completely different version of the alien theme. This is an excellent film that’s full of action, surprises, and excitement. 4. (500) Days of Summer-A beautiful new take on the romantic comedy genre. Original and engaging. 3. The Hangover-One of the best times I ever had at the movies. Loaded with funny characters and LOL moments.
At the Ball State Fishers Center, you can advance your education and career in your own backyard. We’re offering professional development training, graduate degrees, and certificate classes at a convenient, new location, Olio and 131st Street in the Saxony Development.

2. Avatar-Visually stunning adventure that brings fantasy to life. A great achievement in film making and a nearly perfect movie. 1. Up in the Air-George Clooney and Anna Kendrick star in a movie about travel, communication, love, and work. This is my number one pick because it’s so well rounded. Veranda, which is a dedicated space for live entertainment. The 2,000-square-foot facility is located in Fishers Town Commons on E. 116th Street. Geist resident Ivan Crash, who has known the Thomas family for years and has extensive experience in the wine industry, is the manager of the new location. He says that what makes the Chateau Thomas label so unique for this area is that their wine offerings are distinct, due to the grapes that are shipped in from the West Coast. “The Chateau Thomas concept as a winery is a little different from other area wineries,” says Crash. “In general, the climate in this part of the country isn’t conducive to grapes … the final result from local produce is usually a very sweet wine,” says Crash.

“We wanted to produce more of an Old World product, so we have the grapes shipped in from the West Coast,” Crash says. “We crush them ourselves in our Plainfield facility. Because of that, we can really get a good Merlot, Cabernet or Chardonnay,” he explains. Those claims are backed up by the more than 600 medals awarded to the winery from international wine competitions, including many Double-Gold Medals, and a Best-in-the-Nation. For those who would like to know more about wine and the tasting process, Crash says their staff enjoys sharing their knowledge. “We truly have a customer service wine bar,” he says. “We’ll talk and guide you through it, according to your own personal taste.” Crash says that customers are often apprehensive when coming in for a tasting. “We really try to set customers at ease by teaching about the wine process and talking about the distinction between our over fifty wines,” he explains. “We take the time to teach customers how to taste and enjoy.” With a rich history behind the label, Chateau Thomas wines have been a staple in Indiana for over twenty years. started with Dr. Charles R. Thomas, who was a practicing obstetrician-gynecologist in Indianapolis at the time, and he loved everything about wine. In fact, he became so passionate about it, he started making it as a hobby. Thomas eventually traveled to Napa, California, and spent several years studying under famous winemakers in order to learn the craft. In 1984, Thomas, along with his wife Jill, founded Chateau Thomas Winery, and opened their first location on the south side of Indianapolis. In 1997, Dr. Thomas moved Chateau Thomas Winery to Plainfield from downtown Indianapolis, and it is now located just west of the new Indianapolis International Airport off I-70 west at Exit 66. MARK YOUR CALENDAR:
New Year OPEN HOUSE-
Wednesday, Jan 13th 4-8pm
Sun-damaged skin, dark spots and jowls age the face. Restoring healthy color and texture to the skin takes years off and provides a soft, natural improvement. A mini-lift tightens the neck , jowls and midface and removes 10-15 years of age from the face without giving a pulled or “stretched” look. Surgery is designed to turn back the clock without changing what you look like- a better, younger YOU. Healing requires one week of “down time””. Procedures can be done under sedation. Cost varies depending on the extent of surgery but ranges $1500-6000 (total). Dr. Catherine Winslow is one of the most experienced facial plastic surgeons in the country, and would be happy to consult with photo morphing to show you what changes are possible. Go to www.IndyFace.com for more before/after photos.
