Sahm Things Move, Sahm Things Stay By Ellen Kizik Ed Sahm, the successful owner of all six (and counting) Sahm’s Restaurant locations, has shared a genuine passion for great food since his childhood. It wasn’t really until high school, after carefully observing his grandmother, that Ed started experimenting with different recipes and dishes.
anything stir fry, and of course, last, but certainly the most important, the sour cream coffee cake. Although the steaks may not completely melt in your mouth, the taste for the price you pay is unbeatable. The seating area has slightly shrank from 195 seats to 155, but Friday lunch hour is just as packed as a Ed Sahm in front of the original typical Saturday night. Sahm’s Restaurant at 116th St. That’s a very good sign and Allisonville Rd. in terms of the quality, and of course, the longevity of such a restaurant.
He has worked in a restaurant since the age of sixteen, and acquired the knack to cook for his family of eight brothers and sisters in his spare time. Ed attended Purdue University and eventually majored in what is known today as Hotel and Restaurant Management. He went on to become a restaurant owner just one year out of college. Since its opening in 1986, Sahm’s Restaurant has been consistently delicious and never outdated. Its décor is modern and chic with a very welcoming atmosphere to compliment the homemade cooking that many regulars have come to enjoy over the years.
Sahm’s Restaurant offers a broad menu, served with a personal and caring touch. When it’s time to really eat, you can’t beat Sahm’s because there is no better place in the greater Indianapolis area that offers great food at such great value. www.sahms.com
Although their location has moved across the street from the corner of 116th and Allisonville, the restaurant still remains conveniently located for food lovers. The smokefree environment is more inviting and healthier all around. Sahm’s seems to have it all: excellent timing, excellent service, and to top it off, great food. Sahm’s delivers American cuisine like very few restaurants do. It is a local favorite for many reasons, some obvious, while others are more subtle and get better with time. Besides the same stained glass window panes, the environment has become more engaging with a separate, yet not completely closed off, dining room and bar. Sahm’s creates every dish from scratch, from the bread to their soups. Besides the main courses, don’t forget the side dishes, which are so good!

Bucket Full of Wishes on My List By Jennifer Alderman I’ve never made a bucket list. I guess I have always been so busy trying to get the things I need to get done completed that I haven’t had any time to think about doing the things that I wanted to get done. But when I was diagnosed with cancer, I naturally started thinking about those things, those bucket list items that I should consider trying to get around to, you know, just in case. And mostly I made the list because it was a fun distraction from the reality surrounding me – that I am a 34-year-old Mom trying to survive cancer. The bucket list gave me the outlet to escape that for a
minute and dream of all the things I could be out there doing. Here is a sampling of “to-dos” from my bucket list:
Take a snap as quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts
Hey, I never said the items on my list were attainable or realistic. If you’re going to make a list of all the things you wish you could do before you die, then I figure you might as well dream big. And maybe this one isn’t so crazy. What if I attended a practice, and Peyton pulled up with a cramp and Sorgi still had a sore shoulder and Painter was still hiding under a rock from the beating he took in the first game against the Jets? Then just maybe they’d need someone to step in and make a few passes. And who better than a 34-year-old soccer mom recovering from breast cancer? OK, I just read those last two sentences and realize that I sound like a complete lunatic. I guess this one falls under the “when Brett Favre retires or hell freezes over, whichever comes first” category.
Drive cross country in an RV and see the Grand Canyon
I have a burning desire to unleash my inner Griswald and see the country with my family the way God intended, in a gas-guzzling Ramada on wheels. My husband and I have actually had a few conversations about this type of trip. Our game plan is to wait until the kids are old enough to all tie their own shoes and get excited about traveling in a big rig, but before they get too old and spend the entire trip texting to their friends about how lame their parents are.
Attend the Tour De France
My Mom made a crazy list and all I got was this bucket.
I used to run triathlons, about a hundred years ago before chasing my kids became my main form of exercise. I used to hurry home during the Tour and watch the recap of the day’s stages on the Outdoor Network. This was back when Lance Armstrong was dominating the Tour De France, back when he was in the process of winning a total of seven yellow jerseys. My husband would come in and shake his head in confusion when I’d say to him, “Man! Look how bunched up the peloton is coming down this mountain! Somebody’s going to get killed!” And I dreamed of following the tour, of eating and drinking my way through France while I cheered on the American underdogs. My sister and I were inches away from dropping everything and hopping on a plane to Miami to cheer on the Colts this past Super Bowl, and as much fun as that would have been Carmel Community Newsletter
contestant on Top Chef) on the list. When I review my list I am reminded of the quote from comedian Paul Feig, “I made my bucket list tonight, and the only thing on it I have any hope of owning is a bucket.” And as much fun as I had compiling the list, I really just want to cross some items off my immediate “to-do” list. Finish chemo, grow my hair back, finish my reconstruction, hang out with my kids, feel normal again – these may not be as exciting as singing on stage or touring France, but if I could successfully check them all off, even if I never complete one item on the bucket list, I would feel pretty satisfied with my achievements. But if the Colts thing happens, that wouldn’t be so bad either.
(albeit disappointing) I would take a trip to the Tour over the best Super Bowl tickets in the stadium any day of the week. Unless they were going to let me take the first snap.
Play the guitar and sing on stage with Kenny Chesney
OK, so half of this one falls in the fantasy category again. We saw Chesney at Lucas Oil Stadium two years ago, and quickly realized that he and his band have the greatest jobs on earth. They get to travel the world, meet all kinds of new people, and have 50,000 people a night singing along with their music. I can’t imagine it getting much better than that. I don’t know that I have the emotional stamina (or more importantly, the talent) to be a rock star, but I sure would like to experience that feeling for about 10 minutes. It would definitely be a story for the grandkids someday. I took guitar lessons when I was younger, but never practiced hard enough to get very good, and I always regretted that. I’d like to pick it up again and get good enough to play a few songs so my kids could sing along with me. I can see us all huddled around a campfire on our Grand Canyon RV adventure, singing together in perfect harmony. I sound like lunatic again, don’t I? The list goes on, and there are some easily achievable items (see New York City) and some more fantasy items (be a

Do Ray Mi Fa So La Ti Do You Want to Learn About Music? By Mindy Fleming Do you have rhythm? Can you feel the beat? Would you like to have the word “harmony” in your vocabulary, and in your child’s vocabulary? If your answer is yes, then it’s time to connect with your child on a musical level and enroll in The Music Playhouse. According to Debbie Aikman, owner of The Music Playhouse, “It is critical developmentally to expose your children to music at an early age. Researchers have documented that exposure to music in early childhood has a positive effect on the brain and that the earlier you start, the better.” The Music Playhouse offers parent/child music classes, with the goal of obtaining basic music aptitude through lots of fun. While living in Atlanta, Aikman attended a similar music program with her children and realized, after moving back home to Indiana, there was a need in the Carmel area for this type of music learning. So she and her sister opened up The Music Playhouse in 2002. “Our classes are highenergy and lots of fun,” explained Aikman. “We incorporate all different types of music and activities to keep the learning fresh.”

Aikman went on to say that the music collections are very entertaining as well as educational. The collections are also designed to expose your child not only to a large quantity of music, but a large variety, including a wide range of scales, rhythms, instruments and styles. “Parents often rave about how much they enjoy our music selections.” The Music Playhouse offers a different collection of music for each 10-week session. Children will not only be able to play and explore different instruments such as egg shakers and drums, but they also dance and sing.
worth giving it a try.” The Music Playhouse offers a free trial class to anyone who would like to see the class dynamic first. Currently, there are two types of classes offered in Carmel. The Pups is for ages infant to five years old. “The mixed age classes can allow siblings and friends of different ages to enjoy class together,” says Aikman. The other class is The Cats, which is for ages four through six.
The Music Playhouse is located in the St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, Administration & Education “The most critical time in a child’s development is from Building, off Main Street and Meridian in Carmel. CAN NOT BE EDITED that the child’s likelihood of strong musical ability in the future is increased. Our dedicated teachers are carefully trained to stimulate this learning through playful classroom interaction.”
Aikman also explained that the teachers at The Music Playhouse are highly qualified and have extensive backgrounds in music, vocals and instruments. “My daughter plays ‘music class’ with her stuffed animals at home,” said Denise Murray, mother of Evelyn, who is two years old. Murray has been participating in The Music Playhouse for over two years. “I started when my son was two, and eventually brought my daughter,” explains Murray. “I just love the teachers and the music. It is very energetic and we look forward to coming every week.” Home participation is highly encouraged. A big piece of the program is parent involvement, as kids love repetition and will model what they see their parents do. “We have a lot of special needs kids come through our program,” says Aikman. “Kids with special needs oftentimes enjoy the program as much as other children, and many parents have reported a positive impact.” Aikman went on to say that each child is different and they take them case by case. “It’s definitely Carmel Community Newsletter

I Scream. You Scream.
We All Scre by Mindy Fleming
Hot and humid weather is quickly approaching. We’ve already had a good taste of it… just for it to be taken away with rain and cooler temps. But before we know it, the middle of the summer is here and fall is around the corner. My suggestion: eat some yummy cool treats as often as you can. Take advantage of the three warmest months in Indiana by cooling off regularly with gelato, ice cream, custard or sorbets. What is the difference, you ask? Well, I’ll just tell ya… Think you might gain a little weight during my suggested summer program? Think again. If you choose gelato, Italian for frozen dessert, as your cool treat, you have chosen a healthier choice. Key word: healthier, not healthiest. Gelato is made by folding the ingredients rather than whipping them (which reduces the amount of air that is in it), resulting in a Maggie Moo’s most popular flavor of “super” premium ice cream is Blue Cotton Candy. Shown here is Gavin Fleming who is trying to manuver his way around this tasty treat.

am... richer, creamier texture. It only contains between 6-10% butterfat (also called milkfat). Above: Best friends (L) Norah Nowlin and (R) Grace Fleming are very excited to start eating ice cream on a regular basis this summer. Maggie Moo’s offers many flavors of sorbet as well as ice cream. Norah is enjoying a Raspberry Sorbet cone. Grace decided to mix in chocolate chips into her Cool Mint ice cream.
Jim Colvin, owner of Gelato DaVinci, says, “Our gelato is very dense. It weighs almost twice as much per scoop as most ice creams.” Colvin went on to say that by using less air, they don’t have to use a high butterfat cream, which eliminates the greasy palate caused by a lot of fat. “Our gelato is made with milk, cream and sugar, with 7% butterfat. Because there is less fat, the flavor is more intense,” says Colvin. The top flavors this summer are Key Lime, Coconut and Watermelon sorbet.
Left: Located in Clay Terrace, Jim Colvin has created a cool oasis with Gelato DaVinci. Want to make your own gelato with the flavor of your choice, even if it is not on the menu? Gelato DaVinci offers “The Gelato Experience” that lets you do just that! Call 317-816-9100 or go to www.gelatodavinci.com for more information. Gelato DaVinci is located at both Clay Terrace in front of Dick’s Sporting Goods and at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Carmel.
Gelato DaVinci also prides themselves on their flavorful sorbet, which is a healthy alternative to other frozen dairy desserts. “Our sorbet is made with fresh fruit and natural juices, making it burst with flavor,” said Colvin. “It is an amazing treat for those watching calories since it has nearly half that of ice cream. It is also fat free, cholesterol free and gluten free.” Their sorbet has been tested by the American Heart Association as a Heart Healthy food item, making sorbet our “healthiest” choice for your summer indulgences.

You ran the Indy Mini Marathon. You ran the Geist Half Marathon. So you need to put on a few extra pounds? Go straight to Maggie Moos, Handels Homemade Ice Cream or Stone Cold Creamery. They serve up the finest ice cream, along with some tasty mix-in’s. We all know the definition of ice cream, so no explanation is necessary. As stated in the Code of Federal Regulations (yes, there is a “code”), “Ice cream must contain no less than 10 percent milkfat

(about 7 grams of fat per 1/2 cup serving).” And once you add in those peanuts, fudge and carmel, you are sure to bulk up in no time, while gaining lots of calcium and protein!
Carmel and Fishers, you are not far from paradise!
Tate Schuetz, owner of Maggie Moo’s at 146th and Hazel Dell, makes “super premium” ice cream. “It is higher in butterfat, doesn’t have as much air and in turn doesn’t melt as quickly,” explains Schuetz. “We make all of our ice cream, cakes and products right in the store.” Their most popular flavors are Better Batter and Blue Cotton Candy. And their most distinctive flavor is Buttered Popcorn. “It tastes just like the Buttered Popcorn Jelly Belly,” says Schuetz. “Red Velvet ice cream is another unique flavor as well.”
So you only ran the 5K. You need a few calories, but not too many. Try custard! That’s right – it Emma is not as fatty as traditional ice cream. Colvin is Steve Aguilar, owner of a local Ritter’s enjoying Frozen Custard, explains that custard her favorite was based on the now-famous flavor of Gelato, Cake French Vanilla flavor. Spectacular! “Custard is made with a little bit of egg yolk, which makes it less fattening and a lot richer and creamier.” Custard only has 10% butterfat, which is at the lowest end of the spectrum of ice cream standards.
Another informative fact about Schuetz’s Maggie Moo’s is that they will make special arrangements if your child has certain food allergies. “We do all what we can to help,” says Schuetz. “Just ask.” Schuetz’s daughter has a severe peanut allergy, which is why allergies are an important topic to him. Maggie Moo’s will be coming out with a new flavor each month all summer long. This month it is Watermelon Taffy, June is Fruity Gum, July is Lemon Sorbet and for August it will be Churro.
Americans consume about 15 quarts of ice cream per person per year — the most in the world. Source: About.com
What are the most popular flavors of Ritter’s Frozen Custard? Try Turtle Something, Cake Batter and Mint Chocolate Chip. And they have delightful flavors of sorbet (they call it Italian Ice) including mango and blue Italian Ice. Ritter’s can be found in Fishers off Allisonville Road by the airport and on Brooks School Road.
“My daughters and I love to get ice cream on a hot summer day,” says Christy Nowlin, Carmel resident, who lives right down the street. “My daughter, Norah, also has a peanut allergy and we just stick to the sorbets. She loves them.” I found some unique flavors at Handels that will surely entertain your taste buds: Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownie, Pumpkin Pecan, Graham Central Station, Rum Raisin and Spouse as a House, just to name a few. At Cold Stone Creamery, you can always choose a mix-in. That is their specialty, or what they call “creations.” They have everything from fruit, cookies, candy, and nuts to peanut butter, cinnamon, fudge and honey. With locations in both

Ritter’s is also launching a healthy alternative this summer called “tart” frozen yogurt. “It is not as sweet or milky as conventional yogurt,” explains Aguilar. “It uses live cultures and is non-fat.”
Some other local favorite places to enjoy a frozen dessert are Baskin Robbins, Dairy Queen, TCBY, Culver’s and Bub’s in Carmel. Let’s just pray for a nice, warm summer so you can enjoy a frozen dessert whenever you want! Oh, and by the way, Americans consume about 15 quarts of ice cream per person per year — the most in the world, according to About.com. Wow!

Locally, Faith Apostolic ministers to the homeless of Indianapolis by bringing supplies such as food and clothing to them, as well as busing them up to Sunday morning services where they are fed by a team of volunteers, and cared for spiritually through the worship service. Beyond the local level, Faith Apostolic is ministering to and serving people all over the world. Pastor Ball says, “We are heavily involved in Cuba right now, as well as Haiti, Uganda, and India.” A team from Faith Apostolic served in Haiti recently. Pastor Ball said this about their experience, “We just returned a few months ago from the earthquake in Haiti. We were one of the first groups on the ground with supplies, even before the airports were open. We went through the Dominican Republic and bought $20,000 worth of supplies and actually drove them over to some of the people in Haiti.” Pastor Ball says they have a mission trip planned to go back to Haiti, as well as trips to India and Cuba planned for this summer.

Garage Sales Wreak Havoc On Psyche By Michelle Momper If you’ve ever wanted to test your marriage, your sanity and your self-control, there’s one thing you must do: hold a garage sale. For it will be within the preparation period and the sale itself that you will find out your true convictions, your negotiation skills, and your ability to interact with strangers. Some of the areas that you’ll first have to come to grips with are the differences that you and your family members have when it comes to value: value for random items that have been sitting in your attic for decades, and value for sentimental trinkets that only serve to collect dust. Here is a typical conversation: Husband: Wow, look! My beer can collection from the ’70s! Wife: How much do you think we’ll get for that? Husband (with stunned look of shock and disbelief): We’re not selling any of these cans! They could be worth a fortune!
Wife: Isn’t that kind of the point of selling them? Husband: Well, what about this tote full of baby clothes? Do we really need every stained onesie and hand-knitted sweater from our children’s early years? Wife (with spine-chilling look of horror and disgust): Take your hands off the tote. Back away or die! And thus, the war begins. You have to leave any sort of logic out the door, because in the world of garage sales, nothing makes sense. It’s hard to explain why a woman will sell her entire living room décor after only two years of use, “because I’m tired of it… it’s just not me anymore.” At the same time, that same woman will not, to save her life, part with a hand-carved statue of the love goddess of Antarctica just because her great-uncle made it during his “recovery days.” As for additional challenges, let’s not overlook the garage sale fanatics that stalk the neighborhood during the predawn hours in order to capitalize on bargains. The act of actually opening your garage door in the morning is similar to conducting war games in training camp. “How do we

get our goods set up and out on the driveway without being assaulted by the enemy?” One of the hardest obstacles is to deal with those who will whittle your prices down, negotiating even the smallest of sales. “Will you take seven cents for this marble collection? You have it marked for a dime.”
So then why have a garage sale in the first place? Obviously, it’s to fulfill that far-fetched dream that you’ll sell every single trinket and every pair of faded blue jeans, and walk away with thousands of dollars. Which, of course, never happens, and is why I’ve sworn off garage sales for the time being. Until I can put that beer can collection up for sale.
“Are you kidding me? Just pay the (expletive here) dime and move on with your life, mister! You and your beat up pick-up truck full of lawn furniture and eight-track tapes. What do you do with this junk anyway?”

Garage sales test your sheer will to be nice to people. Deep breath, deep breath, smile and say “Have a nice day!” And this is happening while a random customer plows through your neatly folded stack of 2Ts, says she’s looking for size 10s, and then walks away from the rubble. Again, garage sales test your sheer will to be nice to people. They test your ability to compromise with your family members in the middle of temper tantrums and emotional outbursts. They also help identify any possible hang-ups you have that might require therapy.

Earth Day Art Contest By Leslie Webb The panel of judges included representatives from Citizens from Greenspace, the Carmel Arts & Design District and the Blue Egg Art Gallery. The judges selected one semi-finalist from each grade level for each participating school, and one district-wide winner from each grade based on representation of theme, focus on energy conservation and earth stewardship, and creativity. District winners included Stephanie Ding, kindergarten, Prairie Trace; Felicia Sanders, 1st grade, Smoky Row; Alexandria Dorn, 2nd grade, Cherry Tree; Andrew Callas, 3rd grade, Orchard Park; Bryn Walker, 4th grade, Orchard Park; Lexie Saunders, 5th grade, Cherry Tree. When asked what inspired her, 4th grade winner, Bryn Walker said, “There are a lot of bad things happening in Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard with Earth Day Art Contest winners. the world, but there are also a lot of good Carmel families enjoyed viewing the Earth Day exhibit at things happening, like this Earth Day Art Contest. I was also the World’s Smallest Children’s Art Gallery on a drizzly thinking about Mother Teresa who said ‘Small things done Sunday afternoon. The May 2 Open House featured artwork with great love can change the world.’” Bryn’s artwork is from the city’s first Earth Hour – Earth Day Art Contest entitled “Mother Earth.” for students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The contest Carmel’s green mayor recognized the winners.
