Business Spotlight

Abby Appelt, founder of Thermography of Indianapolis.

Thermography of Indianapolis:

Finding Thermal Abnormalities in the Body By J. Andy Murphy The world of medicine, which is supported by the wonders of specialized imagery, is moving toward what might be the difference in discovering a disease well before it has advanced to life threatening situations. Abby Appelt was a woman diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue/ Fibromyalgia Syndromes. She went from doctor to doctor, undergoing multiple examinations, tests, blood draws and consultations. With no results or improvement in her condition, she found herself spending 95% of her time in 4

bed, too sick on most days to cope with the combinations of prescribed medications, blinding migraines, vomiting and constant pain. One day she decided she had to go beyond traditional methods and seek out alternative medicine. With this new perspective of alternate pathways, she told me she began by making healthier choices. First, she stopped all the pills, changed her diet and began slowly to exercise. She then began to read everything she could on diseases that had been diagnosed for her. “I didn’t find the answer right away

and had to try several things before I found something that worked for me,” Abby said. “Eventually my search led me to the Internet for alternative medical practitioners who were involved in the FDA approved, digital infrared thermal imaging commonly known as Thermography, which is a brief, non-invasive, radiation-free, pain free, clinical imaging procedure for detecting and monitoring a number of diseases and physical injuries, by showing the thermal abnormalities present in the body,” she added.

This history of Thermography is fascinating and now documented. In 1982, the FDA approved thermography as an adjunctive tool in breast cancer screening. Thermography’s role in breast health is to help in early detection and monitoring of abnormal physiology and the establishment of risk factors for the development or existence of cancer. When used with other procedures, the best possible evaluation of breast health is made.

Tangy, Tropical Salmon on the Grill By Amy von Eiff Grilled Salmon with mango salsa is a popular item on my menu but rarely made in the home. These two items are an easy match to make the dish tangy and tropical.

Jack daniels grilled salmon Preheat grill. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, combine equal parts of Jack Daniels, brown sugar, soy sauce, honey, and ginger. Bring to boiling. Lower heat to medium setting, continually stirring mixture until liquid is thickened and caramelized. Remove from heat. Salt and pepper the salmon fillets. Create a foil platter for your Salmon to grill upon by folding all 4 edges of the foil such that it creates a 1/2” lip around the platter. Place fillets skin side down on foil and grill on a low heat setting. Brush Jack sauce on fillets. Cook for about 7 minutes. Flip the Salmon fillets; the skin should stick to the foil platter. Continue to baste fillets with the caramelized Jack sauce 8

about every 3 minutes until fillets are cooked thoroughly. (About 15 minutes or until Salmon has a light pink color in the middle.) Serve immediately.

mango salsa • 2 cups chopped pitted peeled mango • 1 cup chopped red bell pepper • 1 cup chopped pineapple (try grilling the pineapple!) • 2/3 cup chopped green onions • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice • 4 teaspoons olive oil • 1 jalapeno seeds removed, diced Mix all ingredients in small bowl. Season with salt and pepper. (Can be made 6 hours ahead. Cover and chill.) Chef Amy von Eiff attended Ivy Tech as well as studying abroad in Florence, Italy. atCarmel.com Announces Another Radio Partnership Another radio partnership has been added to the TownePost. com network, expanding the reach and visibility of the hyper local websites and newsletters beyond the 99.5 FM WZPL (www.wzpl.com) partnership announced last summer. Tom Britt, Publisher of atCarmel.com, announced through a video update this month that he will be hosting a daily :60 second segment on MY 107.9 FM WNTR (www.my1079online.com) called the “Community Connection powered by TownePost.com.” “We started this segment last year as a way to help nonprofits promote their weekend events,” said Scott Roddy, Director of Programming for MY 107.9 FM. “Tom (Britt) was already involved in so many local events that we thought it was a good partnership for us. TownePost.com also gives our listeners a way to promote their events for free online.” Each week, Britt promotes 3-5 different nonprofit events during a :60 second segment which airs dozens of times Monday through Thursday. On Friday mornings at 7:15 am, he announces the event or events that will receive a live remote appearance on the following day from the MY 107.9 FM Community Connection van.

Spring Means Farmer’s Markets, Healthy Food By Melissa Webb Spring is here and summer is just around the corner. As we make our way outside after a long winter, our thoughts often turn to the garden. We all want fresh food, but we don’t all have a green thumb. Thank goodness the Farmer’s Market

has made a huge comeback in recent years. The push to eat local and organic drives more people to support Indiana’s smaller farms. It’s good for the local economy, good for the planet, and good for nutrition. Farmer’s markets enhance our sense of community. They become a weekly activity that the entire family can enjoy. There’s more than vegetables at the local farmer’s market. Local artisans bring bread, cheese, eggs, meat, even baked goods, caramel corn and flowers. Here are several other trends that go hand-in-hand with the farmer’s market.

Community Supported Agriculture

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) differs from the farmer’s market in that you purchase a “share” of a local farm, usually an organic farm, and you share in the harvest all summer long. CSA’s differ slightly in their set up, but generally you pay for the entire season in advance. Then as the season progresses, you receive a weekly delivery of whatever the farm has harvested. Each farm grows different vegetables based on their location, soil, etc. Farmer’s markets are great resources for organic vegetables and fresh produce. The Carmel Farmer’s Market (shown here) opens on May 19, 2012.

Joining a CSA is a food adventure and a great way to eat not only local but seasonal. There’s still time to find and sign up for a CSA before the season is too far underway.

Canning

CSA’s and Farmer’s Markets have brought back the age-old tradition of canning. Many of us recall the days when Grandma spent hours in the kitchen putting up green beans and tomato juice. Now a new generation has embraced this practice. All you need is a pressure canner, lots of produce, and some extra time. Canning can be a lot of fun and the whole family can help. Short on extra time? Many veggies can be frozen instead.

serviced down the street not across the country.

juicing

Juicing is also a hot trend these days. All you need a juicer and an excess of produce. The fun is in creating new blends that will please everyone in the family. Most people think of fruit when they think of juice. Most fruits, except the banana, make wonderful juice, but they can be high in sugar. Juicing the many varieties of vegetables is a great way to lower the sugar content of juice, while increasing the nutritional value. Of course, the grill is a great way to cook vegetables, and many veggies can go into a big salad on those nights when it seems too hot to be in the kitchen. So head out to your local farmer’s market, pick up what looks fresh and delicious, and do something creative with them. Melissa Webb is a certified yoga instructor that lives in the Geist area. Table for One, Hold the Applause By Queenie Bishop I’m a person who enjoys dining on meals not of the fast food variety. Not that I wasn’t appropriately disappointed when McDonald’s did away with their super-sized fries, but more often than not, I would prefer a leisurely meal that doesn’t include plastic silverware or a booth that must be carefully inspected prior to sitting for ketchup or snot or the perfect impressions of a child’s canines on a rainbowcolored wad of chewed gum. Yes, I’ve encountered all those things at fast food restaurants. Which chain? Take your pick. Anyway, I’ve logged hundreds of hours in cozy cafes with friends and loved ones, and some of my fondest memories revolve around marathon meals at special restaurants. If I’m being honest, though, dining out has also been a source of my-palms-are-sweating-and-I-think-I-might-faint trepidation over the years. Because dining in “singledom,” making your grand entrance into a restaurant with no wingman or woman and proclaiming boldly, “Table for one, please,” can be truly terrifying. Maybe it’s just because I’m scarred for life following some of my early forays into the world of dining solo. I’ve been seated next to the bathroom. I’ve had servers for whom my presence was taken as a personal affront due to my lack of tip potential. I once noticed in the middle of a meal that I was wearing one navy pump and one black pump, which, of course, were identical to each other except for the color. (That’ll teach me to get dressed in the dark.) And then I wondered if the woman across the aisle kept looking down at my feet because I had suddenly sprouted a horn in the center of my forehead, or because she, too, noticed my mismatched shoes. But the crown jewel of humiliation in my dining-out-alone repertoire happened on an otherwise lovely afternoon when I’d decided on a quaint soup and sandwich restaurant for lunch. I made it through my meal without incident — no spills down the front of my blouse, no errant hiccups from the carbonation in my Coke, no renegade food particles wreaking havoc with my smile (as far as I could tell). And, thank heavens, no audible comments from the other patrons in the restaurant like, “Oh, she got stood up, poor thing.”

realized about the time I stood up that it was sound asleep. What followed was a vigorous shuffle-stomp-skip-kick sequence worthy of an Irish jig number in Riverdance (if only I’d meant to do it) that took me from my table clear across the restaurant. At least I was lurching toward the exit as the pins and needles stabbed my foot and calf and I tried to regain my balance. I reached the door about the same time I found my equilibrium. My dignity, on the other hand, had flown the coop entirely. Every eye in the restaurant was trained on me. I could just imagine what they were thinking. Is she a one-women flash mob? Did somebody spike her Coke? She should be wearing clogs for that kind of a dance. I did the only thing I could. I mumbled, “Show’s over, folks,” in my best Irish accent and limped out of the restaurant never to return again. I’m less fearful about eating out by myself these days. Maybe it’s because as I get older I care less about what other people will think of me. Maybe it’s because I tend to frequent restaurants where I know solo diners are welcome. Or maybe it’s because once I’m seated, I keep both feet planted firmly on the ground.

Carmel Nation Never Tires of Winning Story By Mark Marrow, Photos by George Sinnis

with a chuckle.

I asked a friend and avid Carmel fan with ties to the athletic program this question: Do Carmel fans ever get tired of winning?

“Remember, there are a lot of fans who’ve lived in Carmel for years. They are the diehard fans. The fans that have blue and gold running through their veins. For many of us, though, it’s a cycle which occurs every 4 years as you graduate a senior class. Some parents remain involved; others aren’t. I think that’s especially true for people who have not lived in Carmel as long as others. Winning so much and so often, though, becomes a new experience for newcomers in the program. It’s a way of life at Carmel. It really is anticipated and expected,” Williams says, adding, “But when you have kids involved, parents are involved, as they should be. Carmel is a special community. And people, especially in the athletic community, are a very close-knit group.”

I asked that question after second-year coach Scott Heady led the Greyhounds to the Class 4A state basketball championship this past season at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. I asked that question because at times they win so much and so often that not everyone always seems all that excited. Maybe it’s because they are so accustomed to winning. Maybe it’s treated like another day at the office by some. Certainly, the athletes and coaches respond the most because they’ve been in the heat of the battle. It’s pure adrenaline and excitement for them. The student body always seems to be up for the occasion, of course. Principal John Williams Carmel boys basketball oftimes reacts like most team after their Class 4A of the kids, and interacts Championship earlier this year. with the cheer block. He might be the Hamilton County school’s No. 1 fan. Certainly one of the best administration fans I’ve ever seen. Anyway, getting back to my friend’s reply: “Do we ever get tired of winning? . . . No, no no!,’’ he said

At Carmel, it’s like everyone seems to be happiest once they get their athletic fix. Yeah, at Carmel winning can be addictive. But as much as it is about winning, it’s also about pride. They are a proud bunch, these Carmelites. “There’s also jealously by other schools and communities in Hamilton County, and around the state,I’m sure,” I said to my friend. “I mean, Carmel’s athletic success is a country mile or two more than any other school in Indiana.” My friend just smiled, leaned back, folded his arms, and replied, “Too bad!” Facts are facts. They don’t lie. Carmel High School added its 108th or so IHSAAsanctioned state championship by winning the basketball title (it’s a number that’s really becoming hard to keep track of). And the school has produced 7 state championships so far in the 2011-12 season, one more than the school’s previous state record in the 2010-11 school year. Yeah, I know,

everyone knows that by now. And keep in mind, a few more state tournaments lie ahead this season. So, is there more to come? Who knows? I, for one, certainly would not bet against it. The Lady Greyhounds softball team, coached by Emily Good, is the defending 4A state champion, and they’re still pretty good. The Lady Greyhounds are ranked among the state’s top 10 once again. The girls tennis team is the defending state champion, and it is now coached by Mike Bostic, one of the best around. He has led the boys to back-to-back state tennis titles, and 4 championships since 2003. Both track teams are good, too. So is the boys golf team. The baseball team returns a lot of experience, too. But it’s got a ways to go.

So, stay tuned, the excitement may not be over. When you throw in club sports, such as hockey and lacrosse and boys volleyball and competitive cheerleading (yes, those girls are treated like athletes and honored for their accomplishments, as they should be), I think the total number of state championships numbers something like 120.

CarmelFest Has a New Chairman By Stephanie Carlson Curtis A small, rural farming community transformed into a thriving energetic center of culture, business and diverse lifestyles welcomes fresh experiences while holding on tight to it’s roots. Throughout 2012, as Carmel celebrates its 175th birthday, tradition is as ingrained in the newness of the roundabouts as it is in the theme of the explosive Fourth of July festival – CarmelFest.

And the CarmelFest tradition marches on as, Jeff Worrell, a veteran volunteer, takes the lead as the new chairman for the fun-filled extravaganza. “Credit goes to Gary Frey who for 4-years ran the show and has a great aptitude for putting on an event like this. And Kudos for the organization he leaves behind,” said Worrell. Worrell started working on the CarmelFest committee 20years ago and has witnessed the evolution of the event from a few thousand revelers at the Carmel High School football stadium to Civic Square where it moved in 1994 and grew into a community-wide attraction that residents look forward to and appreciate. “Lots of people who have been involved over the years have added their unique and creative ideas,” said Worrell. “Each year, we want to make the celebration better than before, but the main objective is to protect that smalltown American flavor.” Reflecting on history, this year’s theme, “Celebrating 175 Years of Carmel”, salutes the pioneers who, in 1837, settled in this area, called it home and established Carmel. “We’ll recognize the people that played a significant role in the birth and growth of our great community.” Since 2004, The Rotary Club of Carmel has been responsible for ensuring that the tradition comes to life each summer. “CarmelFest is our largest community service project and all hands are on deck,” said Rich Taylor, President of the Rotary Club. The 170 members are true to the Rotarian motto, service above self, when it comes to operating the festival that attracts an estimated 50,000 people. With more than 400 dedicated volunteers, the event has been well-oiled over the years. The Carmel Police along with every other city department help out, and Worrell sees no reason to make any major changes to the already successful jubilee, but he has added some flare. “Committee member, Jay Kim, introduced us to musician Kynuga “Caroline” Ahn, and she volunteered to write an original melody that would convey the festival atmosphere and excitement.”

Jeff Worrell takes over for Gary Frey as chairman of “The Greatest Festival in Indiana,” scheduled for July 3-4. 18

Ahn was honored to take on the task of writing the CarmelFest theme song and concentrated on composing a tune that captures the dignity of the city. “My music is divided into 2 parts,” said Ahn. “The first section concentrates on the patriotic nature of the festival, and the second part is geared toward the festivity. Music always gets people going.” And she hopes the classic jingle that will be used to promote the festival, will inspire and encourage

people to contribute their talents. “What better way to bring people together than through music, our universal language,” Ahn adds. Another special feature for 2012 is the widespread venue that includes not only Civic Square, but encompasses the City Center and The Center for the Performing Arts. “We have a beautiful, brand new parking garage at the Palladium, and it will be wide open and free,” said Worrell adding, “Another 600 cars will be able to park close to the activities.”

look for the heart and smiley face.” In order to cover the $35,000 fireworks price tag, CarmelFest committee members will be selling spark buttons. “We have two versions. The deluxe lighted version for $6 and the traditional $3 design,” said Worrell. “Those who purchase a button have an opportunity to win $500.” Each pin has a number on it and one will be chosen as winner of the $500. Buying a button is a way to get something back for giving and every button comes with $50 in coupons from local merchants.

set up his family dental practice office.

Alex Titus knew from an early age exactly where his footprints would lead him in life. He wanted to be a dentist. His uncle was a dentist and this family relationship would evolve into a direct personal desire to helping people with their dental needs.

“I come from a big family. I grew up in Carmel and loved the area. I was fortunate to be able to take over the practice of a retiring dentist and the location on Medical Drive. Owning my own business allows me to be able to control my life and my involvement in the community, which is very important to me,” he added.

“I saw my uncle solve problems that had to do with people who had toothaches or were embarrassed by their own smile. His skills and care made a deep impression on me as a kid. I loved going to the dentist and always felt better after a visit to have my teeth cleaned or a cavity fixed,” he said with a beautiful smile of his own. When he graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry there was never a question as to where he would 20

This engaging young dentist balances his career with ongoing advanced training to make sure that his patients benefit from his “one-stop” approach of care from cosmetic veneer enhancements to difficult bridge construction. “It is important to me and my team to keep my practice based in the cutting edge of a high quality standard of care,” he reflected adding, “I don’t advertise a lot and am

Titus Dentistry offers care for the entire family with services that includes (but are not limited to): • patient exams • cleanings • cavity care • cosmetic veneers • sedation • digital X-Rays • bridge construction • oral examinations

It is interesting to note that Alex Titus is not the only Titus in the dental field. His brother Jonathan is also a practicing dentist who sees patients with Alex. Sam, his younger brother currently working as the office manager, has recently applied to the IU School of Dentistry. There is also one more brother who is seriously considering following in the Titus tradition of producing fine dentists who really do love this professional field of dental care. When you visit, you will also be introduced to Tammy Oyler, a dental assistant who makes you feel right at home within the Titus dental empire!

“What I see during my time at the Trinity Free Clinic are individuals who can’t afford or have no access to proper dental care. Helping them truly inspires me. It’s the least I can do and at the end of the day it is so very rewarding. To me, it demonstrates a lack of care Titus Dentistry also works with available in our society for so many patients who need finanical help people, and shows how the insurance by using Care Credit, an interestindustry has changed the landscape of free payment plan. dental care. Business Spotlight

World renowned painter Nancy Noel in her Zionsville gallery on Main Street. Behind her, an original painting called “Time” .

Timeless Paintings by Nancy Noel By J. Andy Murphy The award winning Sanctuary has been voted one of the best places to visit in Indiana, however the reputation of the gallery extends far beyond the quaint, historic town of Zionsville. As the majority of visitors, patrons, and collectors who flock to The Sanctuary not only come from coast to coast but also from around the world. Housed in an 1800’s renovated, Victorian church, with two fireplaces, 24ft ceilings, 10,000 square feet of area, custom made chandeliers, gift shop on the lower level, and a bistro with a Victorian back bar, The Sanctuary is not a typical art gallery. Visiting The Sanctuary is an experience in itself. Nancy was an adult before being diagnosed with dyslexia. She always suspected her brain didn’t process the same as others. Even though it caused a lot of pain in her childhood she has come to realize if it were not for her dyslexia she couldn’t do what she does. Today Nancy speaks openly about her “disability” and believes so called disabilities are not disabilities but rather our gifts. She believes “the real disability is in our inability to recognize the gift”. 22

The most powerful woman in the world, Oprah Winfrey, is Nancy’s most notable client having purchased not only works for herself but to give as gifts. Many celebrities and world leaders own Nancy’s work. Then as Trae Figley, N. A. Noel manager explains, “Everyday visitors relay extraordinary experiences when visiting The Sanctuary. Nancy’s art seems to touch people beyond words, there seems to be an emotional connection which people seem to have a difficult time finding words to explain.” Nancy came to realize that people were very interested in the stories of her paintings and tours have become a very popular attraction. Several times per week Jane Jimison leads tours for groups who come and spend the day having lunch at the bistro within The Sanctuary and visiting the gift shop on the lower level. Some visitors are fortunate enough to catch Nancy actually painting inside the gallery space. As her paintings have grown in size Nancy has been forced to bring her paintings from the farm studio to use the vast Sanctuary space, which is more accommodating to complete her large works. Nancy’s paintings and projects have been frequently in the news in past years. However it isn’t until you walk through

The Sanctuary 75 North Main Street Zionsville, IN 46077 (317) 773-1117 www.nanoel.com

The Sanctuary is housed inside of an 1800’s Victorian church with two fireplaces, 24’ ceilings, and 10,000 ft2 of space. the doors of the gallery that you see what she has been up to. Even people who have followed or collected her art for years don’t fully understand Noel’s work until they see the gallery. As time goes on, Noel has an even more insatiable need to learn both on and off the canvas. Having grown up with planes, two years ago she began flying lessons and today owns and flies her own plane. Riding horses all her adult life lead her to believe she could handle an elephant on her own. During a recent trip to India she did just that. Noel says, “I am more interested in challenging myself now than ever before.” Her school in Africa continues to thrive after 13 years and now educates and cares for over 250 children. She has several other philanthropic projects in the works. One particular project was inspired by her trip to Russia last year. She is considering now two prestigious shows, one internationally in Mumbai, India and the other in Mexico City. There seems to be no end to what comes from her imagination. Emotionally, spiritually and mentally, Noel continues to expand. One of the things that Nancy loves is to combine her talent with other arts. She feels the Sanctuary space provides the perfect platform to

accommodate musical and culinary arts. Because of this Nancy has joined with her son Michael to create a concert series bringing in talent from around the country who find the wonderful acoustical sound of the church irresistible.

Nancy’s newest image entitled “Divine Time” measures 9’ x 7’ and was recently hung in the entry of The Sanctuary. Her favorite prayer describes the meaning behind this image:

“The time may be delayed, the manner may be unexpected, but the answer is sure to come. Not a tear of sacred sorrow, not a breath of holy desire, poured out to God will ever be lost, but in God’s own time and way will be wafted back again in clouds of mercy, and fall in showers of blessings on you, and on those for whom you pray.”

As you wander through The Sanctuary, don’t miss the gorgeous, mirrored, Victorian back bar, which sets the stage for The Sanctuary’s exclusive Chef Ghyslain as he prepares the daily lunch and event menus with wonderful original recipes, some coming from Noel’s own cookbook. Chef Ghyslain creates artistry with his pastries and chocolates, as well as caters all events. It is THE place to have lunch with friends or for companies to host meetings. Private and peaceful with wonderful food is hard to beat when searching for a gathering place. To visit The Sanctuary is to walk into another time. The angels are still very present in this renovated church and you will be amazed by how the vast variety of subjects each offers their own profound message. Ready, Set, Pour! Annual Lemonade Day May 19, 2012

By Mindy Fleming The annual and much anticipated Lemonade Day of Greater Indianapolis is scheduled for Saturday, May 19. So if you haven’t already, get signed up, get your Lemonade Day backpack and start building your lemonade stand! For one local youth, Brady Fischer, 8, of Carmel, it was a no-brainer – he’s all signed up and ready to pour!

Two years ago, Brady came in 3rd place for ‘best business’ with a total profit of about $250 (after he paid back his loan and paid for all supplies). “It was a fun experience,” explained his father Brandon. “He figured out all the aspects of running a business, including business expenses, materials and paying his employee, Isabella, to help.” Brandon is an entrepreneur himself; he owns a business called Anacore, a custom software development company. So like father like son, Brady created a job for himself. Selling 118 glasses of lemonade that day kept the kids busy and happy! Brady, being the good business man that he is, split the tips (which were half of the profit) with his assistant, Isabella. Brady’s dad loaned him around 50 dollars to start the process and buy supplies. He also paid a store owner (a family friend) twenty dollars to ‘rent’ the store front for his lemonade stand. “That first year Brady had to understand how important location was,” said his dad. “Traffic was a big part of our success.” Unfortunately they do not have access to a store front this year. “Our primary goal is to find a creative way to generate traffic and find a good location,” said Brandon.

Brady Fischer and his assistant Isabella sold 118 glasses of lemonade two years ago placing 3rd in the “best business’ contest of Lemondade Day of Greater Indianapolis. 24

The core concept of Lemonade Day is for kids to spend some, save some and share some. “Brady donated 100% of his profits to the USO,” said his dad. “He actually picked that charity himself. My son said ‘I’d like to help out the

Army’ – well, that translated to the USO. Then half of Brady’s share of the tips went to his savings account and the other half he was able to spend.” This year Brady will donate his profits to Peyton Manning’s Children’s Hospital, once again – this was all Brady’s idea! Lemonade Day is about creating and running your own business as well as learning daily business operations and fundamental philanthropy. It is open to kids of all ages and it’s FREE to sign up! 2010 was the first year of Lemonade Day of Greater Indianapolis in which over 7,400

kids participated. In 2011, the number rose to over 10,000 participants! This year, they are shooting for 15-20,000 eager entrepreneurs. To find out more about Lemonade Day, visit their website at indianapolis.lemonadeday.org. Mindy is a wife and stay-at-home mom of three beautiful children. She also owns Salsa Creative Marketing LLC - an advertising/marketing company.

Happy 175th Birthday Carmel By Stephanie Carlson Curtis 175 years ago, four farmers platted a place called Bethlehem and a town, that would eventually be renamed Carmel, was born. To celebrate this milestone, City of Carmel threw a birthday bash beginning a year-long celebration with all proceeds going to benefit the Carmel Clay Historical Society. Jerry Hughes and Jim Burrell headed the planning committee for the event and the group will stay intact throughout the year planning additional activities. Several hundred people joined in the reception and dinner at the Ritz Charles, receiving a commemorative booklet, lapel pin, birthday badge and guests had the opportunity to purchase original artwork by artist Carol Skinner depicting traditional scenes from around Carmel. Katherine Dill, Executive Director of the Carmel Clay Historical Society thanked attendees for their commitment

to Carmel and invited everyone to visit the Depot Museum to learn more about Carmel’s heritage, “The dinner with our special guest, Steve Inskeep, was a fabulous way to kick off the celebration this year. There are exhibits, special tours, and outings to involve the entire community in our city’s 175th birthday.” Inskeep, who graduated from Carmel High School in 1986, is a news reporter and host of the Morning Edition on National Public Radio. He shared his memories of growing up on Wilson Drive in Carmel and reflected on the progress made since his childhood. “So many people have made choices that have transformed Carmel from a bedroom community to an edge city,” said Inskeep. “Carmel has a great sense of community so even now it feels like a small town.” Mayor Jim Brainard presented Inskeep with the Rangeline Pioneer Award, the highest honor that a mayor can bestow. Happy Birthday Carmel! May there be many more.
