At a recent Lawrence Chamber of Commerce breakfast, Chris Burd was called up to receive a plaque for the new Burd Ford facility that just opened on Pendleton Pike. I overheard someone lean over and whisper, “Burd’s the word.”

“We had a home off of Buckingham down by Butler University for seven years,” recalled Chris who was majoring in radio and television.

“They kicked me out of the program,” she chuckled. “They told me I didn’t have a voice for radio so I need to find another major.”

Meet Your Neighbor: Chris and Rich Burd (Continued from Front Cover) “We always wanted to move out on a lake,” Rich said. “I grew up on Morse Lake so I always wanted to live on the water and have my boat.”

Growing up in the family’s wholesale car business, Rich always wanted to be on the retail side. He opened his first venture in 1983 called Indiana Car & Truck, which is still open today on Pendleton Pike (Burd Auto Mall).

Like many young entrepreneurs, Rich embraced the Internet in the mid 90’s and built the Indiana Car & Truck website (www.IndianaCar.com) himself. “The Internet was in its infancy back then. I built the website and it just started to grow exponentially,” Rich said.

In 1999, the Burds purchased the worst performing Ford

dealership in the Indianapolis market, Chuck Callahan Ford on East 38th Street. Ranked 16th out of 16 dealerships, the Burds quickly turned the new Burd Ford into the 3rd best performer.

Township Basketball League, Lawrence Junior Football League, and sponsoring numerous teams and leagues throughout the year. They have also donated thousands of dollars to the Lawrence Township Foundation, Make a Wish Foundation, and have become involved in the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

“When we bought that dealership, we knew we were going to be moving it to Lawrence,” said Chris. “We always wanted to be closer to home.”

But one of the most unique community activities the Burds host is birthday parties at the dealership. That’s right, birthday parties. Thanks to a new movie theater and conference room, the Burds will host birthday parties complete with cake, balloons, and food for free.

And move it they did late last year to a brand new facility at 56th and Pendleton Pike, just down the street from the recently renovated and renamed Burd Auto Mall.

Lawrence didn’t just gain a new car dealership, but they gained a good corporate citizen as well.

“Like every other network and television station in the country, CBS is in the process of converting their entire operations to High Definition,” says WISH-TV President and General Manager and Fishers resident Jeff White. “This conversion is a major for all of us.

It’s the biggest change for television since the transition from black and white to color. It means every piece of equipment from cameras to control room and tape machines to live truck have to be replaced.

When a network has multiple games a week, as in the case of CBS, they simply don’t have all the equipment yet to broadcast them all in HD.” White says ninety-percent of

the CBS prime time programs and the CBS Soaps you see on WISH-TV now are in HD. “Reality shows and news programs such as 60 Minutes are the exception,” explains White.

“If you have an HD television, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you will be able to watch the Super Bowl in HD,” White explained. “If you have cable television through Insight or Comcast and you have a digital set top box, you should be okay. The Super Bowl will not be broadcasted via satellite in HD; however, WISH TV8 will be broadcasting it locally in HD through our traditional analog lines. Just get some rabbit ears or an antenna and you’ll be able to receive the broadcast in HD.”

So, there you go, get your dip ready, your ice cold refreshments and enjoy that game in HD this year!

Geist Businesses Join Curves’ Members in Giving

By Laura Gates Laura@atGeist.com One woman cares for her 98year-old grandmother with Alzheimer’s disease, as well as her four children.

Another is juggling the needs of six children while managing her own diabetes.

A third is a single mom of two with emotional scars from past relationships, yet she dreams of starting her own business as a massage therapist.

The struggles of these women have etched away at their physical fitness and self-esteem over the years, yet they have not marred the esteem their children feel for them.

Each of these women was nominated by one of their children to receive an annual membership to Curves. Pam

Brandley, who owns the Geist and Pendleton Pike Curves facilities, sought out donations from Curves members and local businesses so that five Lawrence Township women could receive the gift of fitness.

Brandley, who is also a math teacher at Lawrence Central High School, invited students at the township’s middle and high schools to nominate their mothers by writing a letter explaining why their moms deserved to win a membership.

She and the Curves staff then chose the five who they felt would really benefit most from their customized fitness and nutrition program.

“All of her energy goes into other people, and at the end of the day, I want her to be able to unwind and be happy with her health,” she wrote.

One winner is a former nutritionist herself but hasn’t had time to do what she knows she should, according to the letter submitted by her daughter.

That’s exactly what Brandley is hoping to see once these women start working out on a regular schedule. She also wants the women to feel

Curves offers a 30-40 minute workout, with no men, no mirrors and no “skinny things in spandex,” Brandley said. It’s a much smaller, intimate atmosphere than you find at most gyms, so people who work out at the same time tend to get to know one another quickly.

“We end up meeting people’s emotional needs as much as their physical needs,” Brandley said.

As a veteran teacher of 33 years, Brandley knows that not everyone in Lawrence Township is as fortunate as the average Geist resident. The donations allow her and her staff to reach out to women in the community who otherwise couldn’t afford to pay for a membership.

During her summer break from teaching, she pounded the pavement, personally asking owners of more than 50 Geist and Pendleton Pike businesses to help out. Donations were given by atGeist.com, Geist Family Medicine, Jeff Brown, CPA; Lakeshore Chiropractic, Dockside Dental and Textures Hair Salon, as well as from individual Curves members.

Geist Resident Opens New Veterinary Practice

By Jill Supancik Jill@atGeist.com Dr. Risser met me right on time in front of his new office opening on February 15, 2007. As I visited with Dr. Risser, I quickly saw his excitement about his new practice in the area and admired his spunk about what he does. He really seems to have it down right and by that I mean his “sense� of connection with people and pets.

Dr. Risser got his degree from Texas A&M, and as a suburban kid decided to go into a small animal veterinary practice.

While he loved studying farm animals in vet school, he eventually decided that his heart was with people and their smaller pets. His new practice reflects that quite well as he offers people and their pets a wellness care aspect as well as

providing resources and education to go along with that. He specializes in well patient care such as vaccinations and the educational aspect of caring for your pet, but he also likes the challenges of internal medicine and behavioral medicine. He also offers care with dermatology and allergic skin disease, dentistry, spay / neuter, geriatric medicine, cancer medicine and chemotherapy.

They are also in the process of forming a Political Action Committee (PAC) as one means to help address this issue.

Despite new passport regulations (starting on January 23, they’re required for those returning to the States from other countries via airplane), there are still places with an “over the border feel” where you can enjoy a sunny vacation. For example, roughly 1,000 miles due south from the tip of Florida, in the heart of the Caribbean, lie the three major islands- St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. These popular island destinations make up the United States Virgin Islands, a U.S. territory.

American citizens just need to present an original or certified copy of their birth certificate, along with a valid driver’s license or government identification card to explore the

islands.

Cruise ships, sailing enthusiasts and sun-seekers alike flock to St. Thomas for its stunning harbor, sophisticated attitude, and miles of white sandy beaches.

Adding to its appeal, bustling Charlotte Amalie, the U.S. Virgin Islands’ capital city, offers top-notch dining and nightlife, not to mention its label as the Caribbean’s premier duty-free shopping destination (tendered in U.S. currency). The pristine waters surrounding the island offer fantastic diving, snorkeling and water sports.

A Wounded Deer Survives in the Admirals

By Sharon Listenberger Sharon@atGeist.com On the rainiest day in December, Officer Joe Couch, Special Deputy, Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Neighborhood Patrol, received a call from a conscientious Bridgewater resident expressing concern that she’d hit a deer as she was driving on 86th Street west of Carroll Road.

The driver thought the deer was injured, but it had managed to run off into the wooded residential area. Officer Couch immediately searched, with no success in locating the wounded animal.

The next day, while making a routine neighborhood patrol in Admirals Bay, Officer Couch spotted a White Tail Deer that appeared to be impaired. As he approached to survey the extent of its wounds, the animal, a doe, darted off, revealing to Officer Couch’s amazement a nearly severed hind leg. The doe had not moved far before settling back down in a thicketed ravine at the rear of a home on Richlane Drive in Admirals Bay near the Carroll Road entrance.

Officer Couch called the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) to discuss the best rescue solution and was given the phone number of a wild

During those two days Officer Couch checked frequently on the ailing doe, finding she had not moved from the spot where she had come to rest, though clearly her head was upright and her senses alert.

Officer Couch, clearly assuming the deer would be taken to a shelter for rehabilitation, was surprised to learn that Dr. Finney knew of no such facility avail-

able. Officer Couch spent the next half hour inquiring by phone of any potential shelter in the region. To his disappointment, there is none. Dr. Finney explained his perspective on euthanizing a wild animal not likely able to survive in its habitat with such injuries.

Further, that the humane solution to euthanize is most often saving the animal from a cruel and certain death by a predator or by the inability to thrive.

First, however, he would tranquilize the animal as planned, assess her injuries, then decide whether she should be patched up and released, or alternatively euthanized before recovering from the tranquilization.

Dr. Finney prepared his dart gun. Officer Couch, Richard and I were stationed strategically to observe and be a deterrent to the doe’s attempt at

escape. Dr. Finney stood in her sight path for a time, inching his way close enough to shoot the dart. Sensing danger, the deer rose to her three legs; the broken hind leg dangled only by a strand of hide. She began to move about. When it appeared she might escape, Dr. Finney shot the dart—and missed—the doe running free between the houses to a resting place in another neighborhood.

We followed in pursuit, and the scene was repeated twice more.

Dr. Finney concluded he would need to retrieve the last dart, then he would continue to follow tracks for a while. He suggested the doe might eventually double back to her original resting spot.

Dr. Finney decided to switch to a blowgun for the third attempt. The cold seemed to affect the CO2 gun adversely, the gun not having enough force for the distance. The subject had made her way quite ably from Richlane Drive to two different residences on Old Stone Drive, then to the wooded area behind the Admirals

Officer Couch indicated he would soon need to tend to other duties. Richard and I, both just recovering from bad head colds, decided to give up the search and head to a warm establishment for hot coffee and food. Leaving our cell phone numbers with Dr. Finney and Officer Couch, we asked to be advised later of the final outcome.

Victorian-Style Party Might Just Be Your ‘Cup of Tea’

Years of collecting antique teapots and china dishes has spawned a quaint culinary business for Cathy Martin.

“I’ve always said I was born in the wrong century,” said Cathy, who works full-time as a customer service manager at the Fishers YMCA.

The Fishers resident has started My Cup of Tea Parties, where she serves up a perfect blend of sweet and savory food with Victorian ambiance, all washed down with hot tea and a brief history lesson on the popular herbal drink.

Her new part-time business allows her to tap into her love of hostessing – as well as put good use to all those tea sets her husband, Greg, has been wondering why she’s collected at antique malls and garage sales for the last two decades.

Cathy has long been fascinated

A typical menu includes scones with jam, tea sandwiches, cake, cookies and two types of tea.

Cathy usually serves a black tea, like Lady Grey, and a decaf green tea.

Our fast-paced lifestyle is so busy that friends find it hard to schedule time to just sit and enjoy each other’s company.

That’s why Cathy’s offering area women the opportunity to take a break from the fast food lane and invite a few friends over for tea. It can be a special occasion, like a wedding shower, or just a chance to catch up.

Longtime friend Ann Rockhill hosted Cathy’s first tea party for about a dozen friends at her Fishers home in November.

Cathy makes it easy by providing all of the tableware and preparing the tea sandwiches and desserts. She usually arrives at the hostess’ home about three hours before a

and had a British dad, so having tea is a way of life for her, not a one-time novelty.

Rockhill knows what it takes to pull together a nice tea party for friends, so she was more than happy to pay the $175 for Cathy to do all the work this time. Going to a fine tea room like The Canterbury with that many people would easily cost as much, and Rockhill liked the intimacy of having the gathering in her home.

She also loved the artistic tea sandwiches and fresh-from-theoven scones Cathy cooked up.

Her friend even introduced a tea she hadn’t tried before.

“I thought it was all very authentic,” Rockhill said.

Rockhill’s seal of approval means a lot to Cathy, who has never been to Europe herself.

She has done an extensive amount of research, however, and includes a mini-history lesson as party of her “tea talk.”

For instance, did you know tea was first discovered 5,000 years ago in China but was always served hot until the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis?

A record heat wave made for weak tea sales, so a frustrated vendor dumped all of his hot tea in ice and started giving it away. Suddenly his booth was one of the most popular at the fair!

Tea, of course, was also in the spotlight of American history when the fury caused by the 1773 Boston Tea Party sent things thundering toward the inevitable Revolutionary War.

While tea rooms are not as abundant these days as coffee houses, tea seems to be gaining ground. There are at least half a dozen tea rooms in the metro area, including Helios in Carmel and the historic L.S.Ayers Tea Room at the Indiana State Museum.

“Tea has a big part in our history,” Cathy said.

Indiana Paranormal Investigations

You could call IPI. What is IPI? It stands for Indiana Paranormal Investigations. They are a wellqualified group here in Indianapolis. I sat down with the co-founder Maggie Zioss and her husband Mike to learn some interesting information about local investigations.

This group is made up of “mature and experienced adults who are interested in documenting paranormal activity and helping you find a solution,” according to its website, www.indianaparanormal.com.

He built a rather modern home filled with technology for the time. At every holiday they would decorate the mansion with colored lights. In the Christmas season their favorite lights were blue.

Legend states that to open their new Olympic size swimming pool, they threw a party and apparently the wife fell down a flight of stairs to her death. He supposedly put his wife in a glass coffin in the living room surrounded by the blue lights, which were her favorite because he thought it would attract her spirit from the dead.

They investigate in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky. I asked why they would do this for no charge, and they said because it’s mainly their hobby. They are interested in the paranormal, but they also want to help people by attempting to explain how or why you might be experiencing some activity.

“The mansion was on a sprawling, hilly parcel of land that in fall was draped in browns, golds and oranges, perfect for Halloween. The building itself was old and several stories tall.

There are a few pictures of orbs floating around the cemetery on their website. It is called an EVP, an acronym standing for Electrical Voice Phenomenon. In the past, when crews have investigated places, they would do so with a cassette recording. They would ask questions out loud and only later when they played the sound back would things be heard in response. This device is live as it is using radio waves and often times you may hear things while you are investigating. We talked about the skeptics. If they report an

You betcha. Walk through the haunted art gallery at Hampton Court Palace built in 1525 (which was one of fifty-five of Henry VIII’s castles) south of London, England and you will no doubt feel a presence that is hard to describe. Each year the palace has 180,000 tourists and I was one of them in 2002.

Comforting Parents One Meal at a Time

Comfort Foods was organized in December 2006, as Dena and her friends were contemplating how they could give back to those in times of need.

As ideas brewed, the group remembered Dena’s worst nightmare and decided to look there. In early spring 2006, Dena witnessed her 16-monthold son, Auggie, suffer physical and mental deterioration with no confirmed diagnosis.

After watching a news story on WRTV6 about another Fishers child with similar symptoms, the Hipskinds began to piece the puzzle together. Auggie was suffering from Opsoclonus-Myoclonus Syndrome (OMS), a cancerrelated auto-immune disorder.

After numerous rounds of chemo Auggie is well on his way to recovery, and Dena is ready to get to work. “I feel I have healed enough to now be

“We were looking for dishes that would reheat easily while still having high nutritional value,” claims Dena. The meals were put together, packaged with heating directions and delivered all in one weekend.

Deaf Culture Alive and Well in Geist Area

By Jill Supancik Jill@atGeist.com A couple of years ago, I was faced with taking a foreign language to satisfy the last twelve hours I needed to finally graduate college. As a grown person, I was really uncomfortable with the realization that I would have to learn Spanish, German or French. One of my English professors suggested ASL (American Sign Language). I was told I had lost hearing in my right ear and by no means would I at this point in my life be deaf; however, I found the tip something I was quite interested in. I had never encountered a deaf person until my first ASL class in the fall of 2003.

So, I walked in and there was Professor Mark Wood, just waiting until the class arrived.

There was an interpreter in the room going over the syllabus with us, so I calmed myself down and decided this would be ok - until the announcement came that this would be the interpreter’s last meeting with us. What? I was scared to death. How would I communicate nonetheless pass this class I was dreading?

Over the past year, I have met several deaf folks in this Geist community. Now mind you, my signing is absolutely terrible and my reading of sign language even worse! But my two daughters are involved in soccer, Girl Scouts and various activities through school, and in these activities are many children who are hearing but have deaf families. So you know what? I taught my kids how to sign “good game,” “hi” and their names in sign language.

Well, I am blessed to have been introduced into ASL and the deaf culture by such a good experience both by Mark, who was deaf at birth, and by Ray Olsen, my second Professor, who became deaf after a severe fever when he was a young boy. Like many people, I had stereotypes of the deaf person, not because I had ever met any but because I was ignorant.

Here in my life came two different deaf people with backgrounds like no one I had

First off, I have not had a negative experience whatsoever. I have introduced myself in sign language to many folks and they know right off of the bat that I am a beginner signer - but would you believe they are eager to sign and even patient enough to work with

Hearing people are interrupted often by cell phones ringing and the blackberry emailing us and such. We have lost that sincere person to person communication. I admire that about sign language and the deaf culture overall.

I have a couple of people in mind, but I would like to make the motion to nominate a deaf person for the “meet your neighbor” column of atgeist.com. There are some super individuals living in the area that would make great candidates!

If you do know sign language, it is considered polite that if you know sign language to let

them know so they do not think that they are having an absolutely private conversation.

You can interrupt their signing by tapping on the shoulder, waving your hand or stomping the ground. I went to a football game at the deaf school and was absorbed in the way the teenagers were acting – they are the same as hearing teenagers; talking or signing a mile a minute and laughing and carrying on. I thought it would be sad or not fun to be deaf – one of my stereotypes, but I found out that deaf people are happy too! You can say hi if you want to - just give them a wave and a smile (Facial expressions say far more than you can imagine.).

Going to Work For Yourself? Plan Ahead Are you thinking of striking out on your own and joining the growing ranks of the selfemployed? It’s an exciting prospect – and possibly a little scary. But you can remove some of the fear by doing whatever you can to prepare yourself financially for life as an entrepreneur.

What steps can you take?

Here are a few to consider: Save as much as you can.

Ideally, you would want to have a couple of years’ worth of living expenses saved before you go solo. But that’s a pretty tall order for most people. And if you have a spouse earning a good income, you may have less need to put away a large sum. Nonetheless, it’s almost always a good idea to save as much as you possibly can before becoming your own boss.

Think twice before cashing out retirement plan. If you’re leaving a job that provided you with a 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b) plan, you might be tempted to cash out your account to help pay for the transition to the world of self-employment.

However, try to avoid this move. By liquidating your employer-sponsored plan, you will face early withdrawal penalties if you are younger than 59-1/2, and income taxes, too. Just as importantly, you will be depleting a valuable resource for your retirement. If at all possible, try to find other sources of income. For example, you may want to consider a home equity loan; interest rates on these loans are usually competitive, and your interest payments may be tax deductible. Be aware, though, that you will be using your house as collateral, so make

sure you can afford the payments.

Consider opening a new retirement plan. Once you make the jump to self-employment, start thinking of what type of retirement plan you might want to choose. Fortunately, you have some attractive options that offer both tax advantages and a wide range of investment choices. Student Food Drive Successful for Charity The Fall Creek Intermediate School Student Council received a letter in early December from Good Samaritan, a network of local charities in Hamilton County, that asked for help in re-supplying its diminished food pantry. Helping others is exactly what they accomplished from December 11-15 by collecting over fifty grocery bags and over eighty boxes of the supplies the charity needed. In addition, donations included several hundred dollars worth of gift cards to local grocery stores. “The students were surprised and pleased with the results. The charity was shocked as we completely filled their truck with barely any room to spare,” said one of the sponsors Kris Michael.

New Design Duo Offers Home Decorating for Less Sisters Colleen Laughlin and Kathleen Boyd are putting their design skills to work, offering original ideas to those looking to update their homes. Calling their company Shoestring Design to highlight how much can be achieved on a “shoestring” budget, these women are using their creative ideas to help local homeowners spruce up their décor.

“We both enjoy coming up with original designs, maybe something the client hadn't even previously considered,” says Colleen. “I enjoy finding ways of using what the client already has. This may entail painting current furniture, bringing in pieces from other areas of the house or even unconventional uses for conventional items.”

Kathleen echoes this approach,

saying, “We love to work with what people already have and turn it into to something ‘new.’

That could be walls, fabric, furniture.....you name it.”

Colleen also likes visiting thrift stores and garage sales in search of furniture that can be restored. Colleen updated her 12 year old daughter’s room, spending only $28 on furniture. “The walls are periwinkle blue with crisp white trim,” she says.

“All of the furniture I painted white and put a chocolate glaze on to give it an antiqued look. I found beautiful fabric online for window treatments and for upholstering a chair and the headboard of the bed. I had enough left over to make coordinating pillows, too.”

Their favorite projects to date are children’s rooms. Kathleen enjoyed redoing her friend’s daughter’s room. “First we painted the room a pale yellow and then painted 16” stripes 6” apart, three quarters of the way up the wall,” she says. “Then we put a chair rail at the top of

By Tom Britt Tom@atGeist.com Is anyone really that upset about Verizon Music Center being sold? I’m really going to miss the Grateful Dead crowds, five mile backups on I-69, and the parking lot at Verizon that we’ve all grown to love....er....

I mean deal with.

While the concerts have been great, the logistics of their parking was always a nightmare. I went to see Mellencamp last year and spent 2-1/2 hours in the parking lot waiting to get out (and we left early!).

Oh sure, we’ll most likely lose a convenient concert venue, but demand usually inspires entrepeneurs to dream something else up that is bigger and better than what we had. Anderson desperately needs business.

Perhaps Noblesville will build

something where Fishers was going to put their airport?

Conner Prairie has an outdoor venue for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, maybe they could start hosting Van Halen reunions or season one American Idol losers?

Young under the stars. It was a fantastic evening and even the burgers and chicken that “Park Ranger Pete” served on the grill were ideal. I saw the “for sale” signs on the campground and asked Pete what his plans were. He said “I’m walking out of here with my clothes and cash and not looking back.” It just seemed sad that we’re constantly paving paradise to put up a parking lot (I’ve been singing that song almost every day lately). Growing the tax base is good but at what cost?

It reminds me of the Simon Says joke. (“Simon Says Build a Mall--so we build a mall”).

Verizon is great because it is DIFFERENT. It’s not just another mega-dome. Getting rained on is all part of the fun of going to a concert there.

Think of it this way. What would motivate someone to move to Fishers or Geist if it

Becky: I will miss it. There are many reasons why. 1. I don’t have to find a parking garage 2. It’s close to home. 3. My soccer club has it set up so we can work there to pay for our kids soccer. 4. I think you have a better time outdoors then indoors. 5. You don’t have to worry about getting too hot or smelling the sweat from the guy next to you. I work a concert at the field house a little bit ago and the crowd just was not as up bet like the crowd out at Verizon. I will miss Verizon.
