$2.5 Million Geist Dam Renovation Project Ready to Begin

By Tom Britt Representatives from Veolia hosted a public meeting on Wednesday, October 14th at the Indianapolis Yacht Club to talk to residents about the upcoming Geist dam renovation scheduled to begin later this month. Ted Williams, Project Manager of the dam rehabilitation project, went through the timeline and warned of impending construction noise.

“The first phase of the project will occur from late October through November and span approximately 4-6 weeks,” he said.

Large, flatbed trucks will file in and out of Feather Cove I between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. unloading Armortech mats designed to reduce erosion on the water side of the dam. Those hours were chosen specifically to reduce the risk to any school children at bus stops and minimize rush-hour traffic congestion to residents.

“Expect four to five trucks per day coming through Feather Cove I,” Williams added. “The sound of the cranes unloading the mats into place, engine noise, and trucks backing up will be a bit of a nuisance to those living close to the dam.”

Residents with docks near the dam were comforted to know that Veolia intends on reinforcing around their existing structures. Trees and other vegetation near the shoreline will not be disturbed either.

Trucks will also be accessing the dam from the Fall Creek Road entrance near the Geist Park Trail. Masthead residents

Phase two of the project is the removal and rebuilding of the barrier wall on top of the dam. Awaiting final plan approval from the Department of Natural Resources, Veolia will most likely start the final phase in the spring: another four to six week project.

The Geist Reservoir dam was completed in 1943, making it the oldest of the three Indianapolis area reservoirs supplying water to the city. A similar project is underway in Broad Ripple along the Central Canal.

Sprint to the Finish and catch up with the people ahead of you. Three miles later, you hang your bike up on the rack and run away. In one mile, you will be finished at last. What is happening, you ask? Let me tell you.

FAST (Fishers Area Swim Team) hosted a sprint triathlon on Saturday, September 19th. A triathlon is a swimming, biking, and running race. A sprint triathlon is a shorter triathlon where you try to race as fast as you can.

Some friends and I from SSC (Southeastern Swim Club) participated in this event. Aly Morgan, an SSC swimmer and friend of mine, feels “happy and satisfied that I finished,” when she crosses the finish line. Her favorite part of this race is swimming. Because we are on the swim team, we both agree that swimming is the easiest leg. Although, Aly and I have different opinions on our least favorite part.

I hate running.

The race itself was exhilarating. Even though we had to be at Fishers High School at 7 a.m. to get our numbers written on our arms, something felt right about being in the middle of the race. There’s a voice inside your head saying, “You can do a triathlon. You are special.� Whether it’s swimming, biking, or running, you know what you are doing is a huge accomplishment. The crowd, your family and friends being there to cheer you on, pushes you to move faster.

New Apezza Pizza Opens at Geist cheapest and not the fastest with a motto that reads “life is too short to eat cheap pizza!�

Owner Steve Wechter (formerly of Famous Jacks) opened “Apezza� next door to Mama Bears at Fall Creek and Brook School Road (10122 Brooks School Road).

Despite the fact that several businesses have come and gone in this location, Wechter feels confident he can succeed. “Bella Vita Ristorante obviously did very well here,� says Wechter. “ I think if you give people what they want, you can make it work.� “We offer really good pizza, breadsticks and wings that are worth the wait.�

Wechter says they make about 77 pounds of fresh dough daily at Apezza along with their own sauce and their own Italian blend of sausage. They also have a secret cheese blend for toppings.

Unselfish Geist Soldier Exemplifies True Spirit of Giving I believe all soldiers are unselfish when serving their country. As the holiday season is quickly approaching, I can’t help but notice one soldier in particular, who reflects the true spirit of giving. Her name is Elizabeth “Beth” Gorenc who grew up in the Geist area, graduating from Hamilton Southeastern High School in 2004. This past July, she was deployed to Iraq.

Recently, Beth sent an unusual email to her mother, Diane Jaicomo, asking for something. Beth wasn’t asking for clothing, homemade cookies, or music CDs for herself.

Instead, she was asking to spread the word about a need for humanitarian efforts to help Iraqi orphans and women living in shelters.

Beth informed her mother about a non-profit program called Kids of Iraq (www.kidsofiraq.com) that collects and disseminates toys and supplies to local areas of Iraq. Supplies are only delivered when they have enough to warrant a trip to the outlying areas. Unfortunately, the incoming flow of donations is much slower than it has been in the past.

Located at Joint Base Balad, an Air Force base north of Baghdad, Beth reminds us that whenever American soldiers have the chance to deliver goods and donations to the civilians, a bond between American troops and Iraqi people is strongly reinforced.

Give Thanks For Duct Tape and Modern Medicine Since Thanksgiving is only a heartbeat away, and thousands of frozen turkeys are being stocked at this very moment, I thought it fitting to show appreciation for all the little things in life.

Oh, yes, while millions of Americans give thanks for family and friends, blah blah blah, I want to give homage to the material possessions that really make life worth living. The things that are ignored, overlooked, and well, underappreciated this time of year. So as you consider the best stuffing recipes and plan your desserts for Turkey Day, take a moment of silence (grab a tissue).

nearby families in their power boats saw the incident and its aftermath, and chased down the pontoon boat, forcing it to stop. We called 911 using a cell phone immediately after the collision and the Hamilton County Sheriff responded (the Indiana State Department of Natural Resources [DNR] was not patrolling Geist that evening). We all then met at the refueling area of the powerboat marina in order for information to be exchanged. The police asked for the driver’s license and boat registration (both of which we had) from the operators of each boat. They also spent substantial time talking individually to the parties involved in the incident.

Alcohol was clearly involved in the operation of the pontoon boat; evidence existed on the boat and all the teenagers admitted they were drinking illegally. The teenager supposedly operating the boat had a breath alcohol content that was twice the legal limit. Another was so intoxicated that the police called for an ambulance to take her to St. Vincent’s Hospital.

The family that had chased down the pontoon came forth as formal witnesses to the incident. Thankfully there are good, responsible citizens on the water. One of their observations was that they did not see anyone at the controls of the pontoon boat immediately following the collision.

On Tuesday evening, July 7, around 6:45 p.m., my 2006 Capri 22 sailboat was run into by a speeding pontoon boat with six teenagers aboard. I was sailing with four passengers in a light breeze at about 1 knot in open water when the pontoon boat approached us off the rear port quarter. They did not change course despite our collective shouting that they were on a collision course with us.

Our sailboat was subsequently trailered to Sailboats, Inc.

The pontoon boat slammed into our port side, about amidship, at an estimated 45 degree angle, bounced off, and then sped away. The collision was sufficiently forceful that a portion of the above-deck structure of the pontoon boat flew over into our cockpit, narrowly missing one of my passengers.

for damage estimates and repairs. Catalina, the boat manufacturer, collaborated on repair recommendations, given the severity of the damage. The cost to repair the sailboat was $6,157 and the repair time involved was six weeks.

The accompanying photograph depicts much of the visible exterior fiberglass damage to the port side of the sailboat.

My reason for submitting this article for publication is that it prompts several reminders for us all: • As the police and DNR readily agree, teenage (and adult) drinking on Geist Reservoir is a big problem. It is far bigger than they have resources to handle. So, sailors should ALWAYS be vigilant and watchful when any boats (especially powerboats operating at high speed) are nearby.

• Do not assume that operators of other boats see you. They may be preoccupied with drinking, making out, towing skiers, towing kids on water sleds, fishing, or other activities.

• Don’t assume that people on other boats can hear you shouting. Their own engine/motor noise may make it very difficult to hear sounds originating away from their own boat.

• Don’t naturally assume that someone is at the controls of another boat moving at high speed.

• Boats not under motor power (such as sailboats) have “right of way” over motor powered boats since non-motor powered boats are generally much slower and less maneuverable.

• Have a radio transmitter or cell phone on board when operating your boat in case emergency calls are necessary.

Know which channels/phone numbers to use.

• Have a first aid kit on board (for treating accidents, sunburn, etc.).

• Make sure that your boat registration is up to date, keep a copy on your boat, and be certain that valid decals are displayed.

• Be sure to report all significant boating incidents to the Indiana DNR (a state agency which keeps track of all reported boating incidents). If another police agency investigates an incident, which was the case here, don’t assume that the investigating police agency will notify the DNR. Geist Community Newsletter

The school year is well underway and the Hamilton Southeastern School District is faced with several pressing issues. The budget deficit is up over $5 million dollars and they are looking to property owners for help.

The HSE school board is suing the state with objections stating they were shortchanged in the newly passed budget this year. There’s a growing frustration over the challenging grading scale, which many say is having a negative impact on HSE students.

“I am cautiously optimistic. The more people I talk to, the more they support the referendum because they realize it won’t cost as much as they thought it would.”

The Superintendent says a $100,000 household would pay just $3 a year for the first few years, and a $250,000 household would pay around $14-15 for the same period of time. “ It is not that much when you are talking about saving a teacher’s job or keeping classroom sizes from increasing,” Dr. Smith added.

The referendum is only a short term (7-year) band-aid to what Dr. Smith says is a bigger problem: The inequity in school funding by the state.

IPS receives more than $8,000 per student, while HSE receives $5,800 per student.

“I know IPS needs more, but the disparity is just too much,” says Dr. Smith.

First, the budget deficit. Voters will be asked to pass an operating referendum November 10th, which would raise property taxes by one percent to help cover some of the budget shortfall.

These issues led to the board filing a lawsuit asking for additional funding. If they win the lawsuit, the board would drop the tax increase. The lawsuit will be paid for with funds from the sale of land owned near Geist Elementary school (Olio and 104th).

driver. “A good student discount is a huge percentage discount on your car insurance,” says Kane. “If the grading scale is more demanding than other districts, it is harder for a student to maintain the required B average and that could cost a family hundreds of dollars a year. Just another unfair layer to all of this.”

And finally, an issue that doesn’t cost money, but is generating just as much concern, if not more: the HSE grading scale.

Many parents, students and others are contacting schools and administrators saying they are concerned the district’s steep grading scale will have a negative impact on a student’s opportunities, especially when it comes to scholarships and college admissions.

For instance, Carmel, Cathedral, North Central, Lawrence Central, Zionsville and Noblesville use the 90, 80, 70, 60 scale, which means a testing grade of 92 would equal an “A” in these schools, but at HSE schools, the 92 grade would translate to a lower “B.”

A committee has been formed of teachers, parents, students, administrators and hopefully, some college admissions representatives to review the grading scale and make recommendations. We will keep you posted, but in the meantime, we would like to hear what you think about some of the issues HSE is faced with this year.

Most college admissions representatives say they try to take a well-rounded look at a student’s application with class selection and overall achievements, but the primary focus remains on GPAs and class rankings.

One more issue affected by the grading scale: insurance rates.

The Infamous Check Engine Light tool. This is usually where the misinformation starts.

So your car’s “check engine” light comes on. Now what?

The reason the check engine light comes on, and what needs to be done to properly diagnose it, is oftentimes misunderstood.

A common belief is that a repair shop will have a computer that you “hook up” to your own vehicle and it will tell you exactly what to replace. Do-it-yourselfers tend to believe if they take their car to an auto parts store, technicians will read the trouble code for free, and the trouble code will then tell them what to replace. This is not entirely the way it works.

The check engine light lights up when the computer that monitors engine and transmission performance (Powertrain Control Module or PCM) has detected an input sensor reading (such as coolant temperature) or an output component that it actuates (such as a fuel injector) is out of its pre-programmed window of normal operation for a given condition. Got that?

Let’s take an oxygen sensor lean trouble code for example.

1. Could the oxygen sensor be faulty?

2. Could it also be that there is a problem somewhere else causing the engine not to receive enough fuel?

Although it could be either one of these, the much more likely scenario is going to be B. The first thing that has to be done is to determine if the engine is, in fact, not getting enough fuel. Most of the time with an oxygen sensor lean code, we find that the sensor is reading correctly and the engine is not getting enough fuel. In that case, the oxygen sensor trouble code has alerted you to the fact that the engine is not getting enough fuel, not that the sensor is defective.

You would then start looking at the scan tool data and checking other sensor readings. Sensors can be off enough to cause problems, but still pass the PCM’s test parameters. The technician uses their training to determine if those readings could cause the vehicle condition being displayed.

If all the sensor readings look good, then we would need to start looking at other issues that could cause the engine to not get enough fuel:

In other words the PCM doesn’t like what it is seeing.

The PCM will then store what is called a trouble code in its memory and turn the check engine light on. A technician will retrieve these trouble codes from the computer’s memory with a scan

1. Is there an injector not spraying enough fuel due to either a nozzle restriction or an internal electrical failure?

2. Is there a vacuum leak somewhere?

3. Is the fuel pressure correct?

things that could cause the vehicle to not get enough fuel. We start with the most common things that experience tells us would likely be the cause. It can be a very time consuming process, but is necessary for an accurate diagnosis. Replacing parts that aren’t needed and that don’t fix the problem can get very costly.

Beware of “free” diagnostic services. Places that offer free diagnostics usually haven’t invested in a good scan tool and oscilloscope that can cost thousands of dollars each, both of which are needed if you are serious about computer system diagnostics. Most “free” diagnostics involve hooking up a code reader that can be bought for less than $100 and telling you to replace the sensor or component that the code is referring to. As we have learned, without performing any tests that is just a guess and not a diagnosis.

Just ask yourself this question: Would you spend thousands of dollars on test equipment, take continuing educational classes to keep up with technology, spend (on average) over an hour of your time diagnosing a complex computer system problem and then not charge anything? Doesn’t really make much sense does it?

Another question about the check engine light frequently heard is, “The car is running fine. Do I really need to have it checked out?” My recommendation would be to have it checked out. If you wait to have it checked out, you may end up replacing several components by the time it gets bad enough to cause the car to run poorly. Depending on the problem, you can also cause damage to other components if it’s left unchecked for any length of time. It’s best to “check up” on a “check engine” light designed to alert a car owner to a problem. Better safe than sorry.

Judy Byron, a resident artist in Lawrence, is leading a 5-year-old non-profit group looking to spark a robust arts community.

ver since Fort Benjamin Harrison was closed in 1996, the old U.S. Army base transformation has included residential housing, an 18-hole golf course, and Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park. And while the City of Lawrence, along with the Fort Benjamin Harrison Reuse Authority, is anxious to see the new commercial face of Lawrence, another group is working to rally the arts community.

The Partnership for Lawrence (“PFL”) was established five years ago as a 501(c3) with the mission to promote the arts in Lawrence Township. Judy Byron, a resident artist living on Lawton Loop overlooking the old parade grounds, is the President of the nonprofit.

“Lawrence has a rich history of ethnic diversity as seen in its churches, groceries and restaurants. The city has 11 community parks and a 1,700 acre state park connected to Indy Greenways trail system” said Byron. “We want to add the arts to this list of notable assets.”

Like the name implies, the PFL looks to carry out their mission by partnering with other organizations, schools, and businesses to raise awareness and accessibility of all forms of art. To celebrate the arts, the volunteer board members

organize every-other-month networking mixers in Lawrence homes and businesses called “Toast the Arts.” Local artisans are showcased and on-hand to network with art lovers who are entertained by local musicians. At the end of each 2-hour meet and greet, guests raise their champagne glasses in a toast to the arts of Lawrence. Organizers utilize Facebook.com and atGeist.net to spread the word.

For example, in May of this year, Geist oil painting artist Karen Seltzer and the Warren Central High School Jazz Ensemble were featured at the Sterrett Center in Lawrence.

Chef Suzanne, a local personal chef, catered the appetizers and Ray Cox, owner of Elite Beverages, donated the wine and champagne.

The Partnership for Lawrence sponsored an art book contest in October of 2008 at a Lawrence writing conference.

“It’s a great way to meet local artists, hear some great music, and meet other people that have an appreciation for the arts,” said Byron.

And while momentum has been building, its hard to believe that the PFL was almost dissolved late last year.

Original plans were to bring performances to the old 250-seat theater; infusing some art, entertainment, and commerce into Lawrence’s historic downtown. Those plans were all but killed in 2008 when the City of Lawrence took back the theater and many of the original board members resigned.

“It was heartbreaking at first,” said Sharon Hirsch, a founding board member and wife of Stan Hirsch, attorney for the City of Lawrence. “We decided to pull up our boot straps and carry on with our mission to promote the arts, with or without the theater.”

To that end, PFL board members have been working on their first art fair called “Artique” which will be held on Saturday, November 14th at Louis Jenn Park (just west of Sunnyside at 10450 E. 63rd Street). Over 20 local artists will have their wares showcased and for sale, including handmade jewelry and handbags, paintings, photography, wood turnings and more. Free admission and parking will be available as well as entertainment throughout the day. In true “Toast the Arts” fashion, a toast to the arts will culminate the event around 5:00 p.m. when the winner of the People’s Choice award is announced and the silent auction ends.

Mix crust ingredients together, just till coated and crumbly.

Press onto the bottom of a 9” spring form pan using the bottom of a flat glass but make sure not to press too hard.

Combine cheese, sugar and vanilla in large bowl, mix until smooth with an electric mixer. Add pumpkin, eggs, and spices, beat till smooth and creamy. Pour into the crust. Bake for about 60 minutes at 350 degrees or until nothing sticks to a toothpick. Remove from oven and allow cooling to room temperature, then refrigerate for 4 to 6 hours before serving.

Serve with a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.

Holiday Photo Tips

By Jen Alderman For most of us, this time of year feels like it has been put in fast forward. The weeks between Labor Day and the holidays seem to get closer every year, and there is always an endless to-do list to accomplish before Santa is hauling his happy butt down the chimney. At the top of many lists is taking a family photo for holiday cards or gifts, and this task can be about as much fun as listening to cats sing “Jingle Bells.” Here are a few tips to make this annual ritual a bit more jolly: 1. Level the Playing Field – It is easy to sit the kids on the floor or pose them standing around a tree and then stand over them and start snapping away. You might do better to get down on their level to take the photo. By coming down to their height, the perspective of the photos will be a better representation of your child’s personality. Being on their level also makes it a more interactive experience, and may motivate your little one to cooperate a little more.

2. Location, Location, Location – A photo of everyone seated around the fireplace is nice, but try changing it up a bit this year. Take it outside and capture them playing in the leaves. Let them have a pillow fight in your bed in their holiday PJs. You will get great, relaxed shots of your fam-

ily if they don’t realize they are being photographed, and your photos will be unique and stand out from the crowd of holiday cards.

3. Cut the Cheese – I’m guilty of this, but I truly wish that we didn’t teach our kids to say “CHEESE” as soon as the camera comes out. It seems to cause kids to plaster these giant fake grins on their face, and makes it very difficult to capture the “real” side of who they are. Instead, ask them to say funny sounding words or tell them a joke as you click the shutter. A shot of your child laughing will always be better than one of them looking like a wax replica of themselves.

And when all else fails, bring in some help. Make an appointment with a photographer, or even enlist a neighbor to take the shots while you dance like a monkey to entertain the kids. Friends and family just want to see a picture of your family, and no one will care if it isn’t the “perfect” shot. So take some of the pressure off yourself and have fun.

Maybe even bring back that recording of the cat’s version of “Jingle Bells” to capture some giggles from your little elves.

I’ve never had a good relationship with my left knee. Our problems together started back in college with a traumatic football injury.

I was watching the homecoming game and my entire leg became wedged in the bleachers when I was trying to get a better look at one of the cheerleaders. Things have not been the same since.

After limping through our last vacation, I realized it was time to take some action so I made an appointment with an orthopedist. When I reached his office, I was greeted by an entire waiting room of people who were there to make a trade.

Everyone sitting near me was having something replaced—a knee, a shoulder, an elbow. One guy confused his metatarsal with his Taurus and thought he was at a Cash for Clunkers rally.

During my appointment, the doctor fumbled around with my leg, contorting it in several directions, and then asking me if it hurt…which is pretty funny because when I’m just lounging on the sofa watching Dancing with the Stars I’m in agony, so you can imagine how my calf felt when it was twisted into a pretzel.

Over the years, I have managed to remain relatively active, but I knew that my knee was planning to retire way before the rest of me.

For the last several months, I have felt like there was an entire family living inside my kneecap. I can hear a party going on inside, with lots of activity, clatter and a crackling fire. My wife asks

The doctor told me that he needed to get some “pictures” of my knees, which was embarrassing since all I had handy were three snapshots of me in a pair of ugly green Bermuda shorts.

I went to an imaging center for an MRI. The receptionist showed me a stick outline of a guy and asked me to put an X over the knee that was troubling me. This was difficult because I was looking at a figure looking at me, so his right was my left. It was way too complicated, so I simply pulled down my pants and drew an X on my own knee. The nurse said not to do this because doctors are never sure if X marks the spot to operate or not to operate. I was also still in the waiting room.

Fishers Man Proposes at Pumpkin Patch

Fishers resident Tony Corpuz was certainly listening when his girlfriend, Mary Turner, also of Fishers, mentioned she’d like to go to a pumpkin patch this fall. He listened and remembered, and decided a pumpkin patch would be the perfect place for a surprise marriage proposal.

A calm and collected Corpuz took Turner by the hand and got on bended knee.

Lawrence Central Grad Comes Home to Heartland

Chicken Cowboy is probably my first big break-it’s my thesis project,� Neary said. In fact, Chicken Cowboy was the project that landed Neary a job at Blue Sky Studios, the same studio that produces the Ice Age movies, where he works as a storyboard artist. “It’s my first time working on big studio movies, and I’m learning new things every day.�

Every October the Heartland Film Festival comes to Indianapolis to recognize filmmakers for their outstanding achievements in cinematography and to display their films in local movie theaters. This year, the festival features the work of Lawrence Central alumnus Stephen Neary.

Neary graduated in 2004. While there, he was involved with marching band, speech team, LC Current, and the Cub Reporter.

Today, Neary is known for his animation skills, which have landed his short film, Chicken Cowboy, on the Heartland line-up.

This is Neary’s first year in the Heartland Film Festival.

He applied for three years with other shorts, and this year he was finally accepted.

Neary’s passion for animation even landed him a win in a Channel One contest during his time at LC. “I was on Channel One’s Student Produced Week in 2003.

I submitted some of the intros I had done for LC Current and some short films, and I ended up working as graphics director in Los Angeles for a week. There I shadowed some really talented artists to create the show’s news visuals,� Neary said. “It helped me realize that I could make a career out of working in television and that I could apply what I learned in art class.�

Cyber-Bullying Case at Lawrence Central Highlights Online Issue Crime Prevention Council, “Online bullying, called cyberbullying, happens when teens use the Internet, cell phones, or other devices to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person.” Nearly half of teens have been bullied while online while half of all teens have admitted to saying something hurtful to another using the Internet.

Tuesday, Sept. 1, marked the beginning of Lawrence Central’s very own cyber-bullying case with the debut of LCHS Gossip Girl, a blog created by an anonymous user designed to share stories about Lawrence Central students’ social lives and the gossip that comes with it. Although the blogger uses no first or last names, initials and puns on real names are her way of identifying people.

The creator of the blog is capable of being charged with libel with the publication of obscene pictures or writing slander of another. And so far, this act has been carried out on several students here.

“My friends know I would never do anything like that,” sophomore Kelsey Funk said after being referred to on the site. “I think it’s hilarious how stupid it is.”

If Gossip Girl believes the exclusion of actual names keeps her safe from the law, she’s wrong. “If people know who the person’s talking about, (the blogger) can still be liable in a case,” Steve Key, the general counsel of the Hoosier State Press Association, said. And once the website provokes a victim to take action on it, the victim has a case.

The 6-foot-5-inch buff guy stuffing kids into lockers and taking lunch money is no longer the stereotype of a school bully. It’s the 21st century and times have changed. Today bullying doesn’t always take place during school hours, but behind the computer screen in the comfort of a kid’s own home.

Geist Half Marathon Donates $34,000 to Local Schools chase rewards and incentives for students that reach certain milestones. Students are encouraged to walk during free time, after lunch, and through an after school program.

Geist Half Marathon, Inc. (www.GeistHalf.com) officials announced this month that $34,000 has been donated to four Geist-area schools to fund various health and wellness initiatives. Lawrence Township School Foundation and the Hamilton Southeastern School Foundation received $15,000 each in late September, and most recently, the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation received $3,000 and St. Simon the Apostle School received $1,000 from proceeds of the 2009 St.Vincent Geist Half Marathon & 5K held on May 17, 2009.

Out of the 700 students enrolled, St. Simon enlisted over 100 runners and walkers for the 2009 St.Vincent Geist Half Marathon & 5K. Mates says the $1,000 contribution from the Geist Half Marathon Inc. will go a long way toward expanding their program.

“With this financial support, we will be able to purchase pedometers and provide more family-based fitness activities,” she said.

Fall Creek Trail Ready for Fall Color As fall approaches, many of us begin to think about heading outdoors and enjoying the changing foliage and beautiful weather. There is hardly a better location to begin fall adventures than the Fall Creek Trail, and there are many new developments with this greenway to make it more exciting than ever for residents of the Geist area.

Work has begun to connect the Fall Creek Trail at the Geist dam with the upper loop trail, and the project is simply waiting on additional funding for completion. In addition to this project, the Indianapolis Parks Department has been working with the city of Lawrence and has purchased an old covered bridge to connect the Geist portion of the Fall Creek Trail with the trail in Indianapolis. The bridge is currently in storage, and when renovated and installed the bridge will allow access to Ft. Benjamin Harrison State Park. Funding is an issue with this project as well, but Indy Parks Principle Park Planner, Andre Dunman, remains positive,“The more areas we can connect, the stronger our community will become.�

Text-ual Harassment on the Rise

when she was still a senior in high school. “He really used text messaging to lay the groundwork for initiating a physical relationship when she got to campus,” said Salvatore.

The texts, Salvatore asserts, proved two things: that her clients were telling the truth and that the coach’s conduct was “inappropriate.” In April, she secured a $450,000 settlement from the university for the women. DiTucci also resigned.

It was a classic he-said, shesaid story. Two female soccer players at Central Michigan University accused their coach of sexual harassment, alleging that he manipulated them into having secret sexual relationships with him and lied to his players and to school officials to avoid getting caught.

The coach, Tony DiTucci, maintained he was innocent, claiming the two students had made suggestive romantic advances toward him, and that he reported it to his supervisors.

A Weird Situation In recent months, texts have been key in several cases.

In a pending federal sexual harassment suit in Connecticut against World Wrestling Entertainment Inc., a former licensing coordinator says the married, senior director of the company’s consumer products division made sexual advances via late-night texts and phone calls. Four waitresses at Famous Dave’s restaurant in Kanawha County, W. Va., also pointed to text messages in pursuing sexual harassment claims against a supervisor last year, alleging, among other things, that he sent text messages asking for sexual favors.

Then came the text messages. The students’ attorney, Jennifer Salvatore, had obtained dozens of messages from the coach to the students, including several allegedly sent to one plaintiff

In January, texts helped two women in Ohio secure a $495,000 settlement in a sex scandal that led to the resignation of state Attorney General Marc Dann. The women used texts to help show that they were placed in situations that made the AG’s office a hostile work environment. In one case, one of the women produced a text message that said

Everybody flipped about the Internet. Text messaging — we’ll deal with it.�
