Reflecting on 6 Years of Publishing reading the newspaper in the corner and take my seat. Bob and I talk about anything and everything: Our kids, our wives, crazy promo ideas, local restaurants, wineries, and Bob’s “slow-acting toxins” theory that explains why women live longer than men. As you might guess, most of our conversations are pretty light-hearted. However, one conversation stands out in my mind from late 2006. A few days after Bob had participated in the Eagle Creek Triathlon, he was telling me how much he enjoyed the experience and the challenge. “We need to have some big event like that at Geist,” I said, thinking out loud. After a few moments of silence, he responded, “You need to do that.” Usually his bluntness is followed with a smile, but this time he just stared at me. A mental snowball started going down a long, winding hill that culminated in the inaugural Geist Half Marathon & 5K on May 17, 2008. Today, we are preparing for the third annual “Race Around the Reservoir,” and expect to see around 6,500 runners and walkers, and another 800 volunteers descend on Geist for one day (May 22, 2010). We have donated over $65,000 to local schools in just two years thanks to our sponsors, volunteers, and of course, participants.

Like every Friday, I stroll into Mama Bear’s to have coffee with Bob Tollini and make a joke out of my “atGeist uniform” consisting of flip flops, baggy shorts, and a Geist Half Marathon volunteer T-shirt. I walk by Quinn and harass him about his name tag being upside down, and hand Tim my $2.00 for the small coffee and refill I know I’ll need before I leave. As I head over to our two-top in the corner, I say hello to Steve
As we close the books on six years of publishing the “Geist Community Newsletter,” I just want to express my heartfelt thanks to all of you who have been so supportive over the years. This issue is the largest one we have ever published (76 pages) and highlights my proudest moment: The St.Vincent Geist Half Marathon & 5K Presented by Comcast. You can thank my wife Jeanne for all the success we’ve shared with the “Geist Community Newsletter.” While you’re at it, thank Bob Tollini for the nudge to get the Geist Half Marathon rolling. Lawrence Chamber of Commerce Updates the general public, don’t know that the Chamber also covers Lawrence Township and not just the city. That makes sense when considering our public schools are “township schools,” and that we have one high school within the city limits (Lawrence Central), and one that is not (Lawrence North). The same goes for a couple of our elementary and private schools. Cathedral and Heritage are in the township, while Horizon is within the city limits. WOW! It can be a bit overwhelming, but we are working on a map project that will show city and township boundaries, as well as our seven, yes, seven zip codes, parks and schools.
April is full with many events and programs, which provide our Lawrence Chamber members lots of options to choose from that fit their schedule, budget and/or goals. We don’t want to overload everyone’s calendars, but rather provide a variety of opportunities to grow your network, business or educational opportunities. Would you invest two hours a month in your future? Sandi Ballard, Executive Director of the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce
Growth: As we educate our members and the public on the impressive territory of Lawrence Township, we expect to grow, and with growth comes increased opportunities! This can only help our members expand their networks and meet more potential clients and customers, as well as gain additional educational programs for themselves and their staff.
Our members have different motives for joining the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, and we are always looking for ways to help them. Education and growth are our goals for 2010!
So watch for us to start spreading the word, and feel free to offer suggestions, as our door is always open! Here is what’s coming up for May:

When over 6,500 participants fill the streets for the third running of the Geist Half Marathon & 5K next month, hundreds of them will be proudly wearing a Team Luke shirt, in honor of one local six-year-old boy. While others might be running to meet personal goals, or for the thrill of crossing the finish line, Team Luke members will be running to raise awareness, raise donations, and to honor one small little guy who loves Spiderman.
Story by Michelle Momper Photos by Brenda Staples Photography
The real-life superhero in question is Geist resident Luke Andritsch, who was diagnosed three years ago with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and has been fighting for his life ever since. Along with his trusty sidekicks (his mother, Vicky; his father, Todd; plus four other siblings), Luke has faced his battle with the courage of a seasoned warrior, and has become a shining inspiration to hundreds, if not thousands of friends and strangers alike.
Friends and Neighbors Rally Around Six Year-Old Luke Andritsch, Run for Life
To understand the enormity of Luke’s fight, and his family’s dedication to not only helping Luke, but to raising awareness and donations for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), it is important to start at the beginning. “It was three years ago on Mother’s Day weekend,” explains Vicky, when discussing the onset of Luke’s illness. “We were eating at Bella Vita’s in Geist on a Friday night, and Luke was down by the water feeding the ducks. He was perfectly fine,” she explains. “But when Luke woke up the next morning, he couldn’t move from the shoulders down,” she says. It was that quick. Luke was rushed to an immediate care center, where he was diagnosed with a double ear infection. After receiving antibiotics, Luke was sent home, but his symptoms got progressively worse. On Monday, he was taken to Riley Hospital for Children in downtown Indianapolis, and received an MRI and a battery of tests. Vicky and Todd were given the news: their then three-year-old boy had ALL. “That weekend turned our world upside down,” explains Vicky. “It was terrifying, and it was the beginning of 3-1/2 years of chemo treatments, spinal taps and medications,” she says. So how does a family of seven deal with such an unexpected diagnosis? “It’s something you just can’t prepare for as a parent,” Vicky says. “But we learned to just put our heads down and move forward. We figured that Luke’s illness was either going to take us all down, or pull us all together. Here we are almost three years later, and we’re still moving forward,” she says. The past three years of Luke’s treatment have not been (Continues) Geist Community Newsletter

Sister Grace stands with Luke holding his finisher medal from last year's Geist 5K race. Behind them are well wishes printed out from Luke's Caringbridge website.
"Playing doctor is a little more intense with Luke than it is for most kids," said his dad, Todd. Luke administers chemo to his stuffed friends with his sisters (left to right) Ava and Audrey.

Luke – what can we say…pillowy soft cheeks, thick blond hair (when he has it!), beautiful, deep, blue eyes; looks like a football player, acts like a teddy bear. A kind, old and gentle soul in a little boy’s body. Vicky Andritsch, Luke’s mom
easy. Luke has endured daily chemo treatments, taking up to 14 pills on some nights, plus monthly infusions into his port, which is located in his chest. He also has spinal taps every three months, and by the time he has his last one this June, he’ll have had almost 20. Although the demanding regimen has taken a toll on Luke’s tired little body, his attitude and spirit have remained intact. In fact, his positive outlook and deep personal insights have left family members and friends astounded. It is Luke’s kindness, innocence and generous spirit that have captured the hearts of so many. In fact, when Vicky recently asked Luke what his dream in life would be, he responded: “My dream is to work with Spiderman to find a cure for cancer. Then Spiderman and me will web ourselves, hospital to hospital, and pass out toys to all the sick children and make them all better,” he said. So with a caring child, and four enthusiastic siblings (Jack, 15; Grace, 12; Audrey, 9; and Ava, 3) the Andritsch family decided to bring people together to celebrate life, and celebrate Luke’s progress along the way. “We couldn’t do anything for Luke. We couldn’t take away the pain or the process. But we knew that if we got involved as a group, if we participated in community events, it would help us feel like we had control over something,” says Vicky. (Continues)

(From Previous Page) Thus, the mighty Team Luke was formed. Family members and friends joined as a team in the Geist Half Marathon last year for the first time, with 125 participants on board. This year, Team Luke is 250 people strong and still growing, with expected donations to top $6,000.
Luke gets a piggyback ride to the finish of last year's Geist 5K from sister, Grace.
Geist resident Maria Olson will be a part of Team Luke with her five-year-old son, Kyle, and her two-year-old daughter, Hayden, in the Geist 5K. She met Vicky through Team in Training (TNT), which is LLS’s charity sports training program. Olson is also celebrating her five-year remission from Hodgkins lymphoma, and ran with Team Luke in the Half Marathon last year as well. “Doing the event and knowing that your money is going toward something that touches so many lives, well, it’s an emotional feeling,” Olson says. “Luke is an inspiration. Any kid that can go through what I’ve gone through and still be a kid is just amazing,” she says. Vicky says that having friends like Olson, as well as having an involved business community, is what makes Team Luke so special. “We have corporate sponsors that are really supportive,” says Vicky. “We’ll have a special tent set up for after the race, where we’ll have food, raffles, prizes, and lots of celebrating,” she adds. “Last year, Luke’s sister, Grace, gave him a piggy-back ride across the finish line,” says Vicky. “This year, Luke has been training to make it across the bridge all by himself, and he hopes to cross the finish line on his own,” she adds. Team Luke has also participated in such events as Bop to the Top, an annual race to the top of the 37-floor OneAmerican Tower in downtown Indianapolis, which benefits Riley Hospital for Children. As Vicky explains, “LLS has offered countless services to our family, and continues to offer research in order to make Luke’s prognosis and remission a reality. Our family remains committed to supporting LLS, much through our Team in Training events, like the Geist Half Marathon,” she says. “We will do this not only during Luke’s years of treatment, but for our lifetime.” Luke will complete his treatment on July 19, and his family will celebrate not only the end of the regimen, but the removal of his chest port. The “Port Party” will mark Luke’s successful battle with ALL, and a new beginning for the family. But make no mistake, with the help of Spiderman, Luke continues his fight for others, and the Andritsch family will continue to lead the war against blood cancers. Just as real superheroes should.
Post your words of encouragement to Luke’s Caringbridge website! www.caringbridge.org/visit/lukeandritsch April 2010

Five Tips to Remembering Someone’s Name If you’re like me, you meet a handful of new people every week. On an average week I’ll run into 20-30 new people at networking events. One of my biggest struggles when networking is remembering someone’s name when running into them the following week. I am horrible with names, absolutely horrible. Almost to the point to where it’s embarrassing because the person’s name whom I forgot looks at me with that blank look as if they were thinking “Do you really even care who I am?” It’s time to work on that problem. I’ve researched the subject and have found several helpful tips to help us remember names. Commit: Begin by making a commitment, a conscious decision, to remember people’s names. Forgetting names is actually the cause of a lack of commitment rather than a horrible memory. Tell yourself that you have what it takes to remember names and you’re willing to commit yourself to do so. Repetition: Repetition, repetition is one of the easiest ways to help you remember someone’s name. Use their name several times when you first meet them. “Very nice to meet you Bob. What is it that you do, Bob? Bob, it was great getting to know you, I’m sure we’ll run into each other real soon, Bob.” It may sound a little funny saying Bob’s name a lot, but it’ll help save you the embarrassment the next time you meet Bob and forget his name. I would recommend trying to casually incorporate Bob’s name into the conversation, rather than tell Bob what you’re doing. Name Pictures: By converting names into pictures, you’re more likely to recall the visual image in your memory, which will trigger the person’s name. After all, images are the language of our memory. For instance, when you meet a Barbara think of a barbed wire fence. Attaching a picture to a name is simple due to the fact that so many people share the same name; so you’ll need fewer images than you think. Business Card Notes: Take down a few visual characteristics on the back of the person’s business card. Perhaps they were seven feet tall or they wore designer reading glasses, shaved head, curly blonde hair, or maybe they had an accent.
Use anything that you think will help you remember the person’s name. The Introduction: To escape the embarrassment of asking for someone’s name, you can always pray someone you know enters into the conversation. Introduce, with confidence, the person you know, and let the mystery person introduce himself to your friend. Don’t count on this as an automatic bailout or an easy backup plan, barely ever does this happen unless it’s planned. If you’re not sure you’ve met someone before (or even if you’re sure you have and have forgotten their name), approach them with confidence, put out your hand, smile and re-introduce yourself. RoAne, the author of How to Work A Room and How To Create Your Own Luck, calls this the “You Never Know” approach. She claims ninety percent of people will respond in kind and no one is stuck playing the memory game. For the ten percent who don’t ask, tell the truth: “It’s been one of those days … I can’t even remember my name.”

The Reality of Realty: Fishers Realtor Allen Williams
Allen Williams, managing broker at ERA Real Estate Links in Fishers. The Woods at Geist Overlook Garage Sale is scheduled for Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1 from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm both days. The Woods at Geist Overlook is located on the northeast corner of 113th and Olio Road.

would allow people to see us.”
Turn on the television, open any newspaper or magazine, or surf the Web, and you’ll find the same information about the real estate market. It’s tough. Although there have been slight improvements, it will continue to be tough for the next few years. Everyone knows it, especially if you’re one of the many people trying to sell a home right now. It seems, though, that one Realtor has adapted to the current market conditions – Allen Williams, managing broker at ERA Real Estate Links in Fishers. The reality is that realty has been going well for Williams, who posted his best year of the last 16 in 2009.
Williams is taking advantage of the captive audience that hangs out at Handel’s. A 50” plasma TV screen hangs in their front window displaying information about homes for sale, and new benches adorn the sidewalks for those who want to enjoy their ice cream outdoors.
Allen believes so much in Fishers and Geist real estate that he just opened a new retail office space right next to Handel’s Ice Cream on 116th Street in Fishers. Williams says the 1300 sq. ft. space is just perfect for his staff of five.
“We feel we’ve taken a fresh approach to our customer service,” said Williams. “We want to make our environment as comfortable as possible.” The long-time Fishers resident embraces out-of-the-box marketing ideas and the technology side of real estate, which has helped him and his team to sell homes quickly and close to list price. While Williams is already exceeding the average sales price on homes in 2010 as compared to 2009, he expects the real estate market will continue to struggle until 2011. His advice to potential sellers: “Make sure your home is in good condition and priced accordingly. There’s too much competition right now to not be on top of your game.” Williams certainly seems to be at the top of his game, enjoying the role he plays in helping Fishers and Geist residents realize their dream of investment or moving up in home ownership.
“My wife and I were at Handel’s last summer eating ice cream,” explains Williams. “We noticed the space next door and decided to jump on it. We wanted something that

Smart Phones Bring User Intelligence Into Question I was in a meeting last week with a client, and we were talking about new “apps.” Since I’ve never downloaded an app, and barely know what one is, I did what any professional would do. I nodded and pretended like I knew what he was talking about.

Amy Beverland Dad’s Club Golf Outing will be held at the Hawthorns Golf and Country Club on May 17, starting at noon. Single player cost is $125 and includes dinner afterwards provided by Texas Roadhouse. Call 317-752-6058 to register or donate prizes.
But my confidence was short-lived, as he decided to show me how to download one in particular, and on my own phone, no less. You can imagine my embarrassment as he reached over to study my cell phone, and broke out into barking laughter. “This is what you use? How long have you had this, eight years?” As I tried to hide inside my Starbuck’s Grande, my face turned an attractive shade of watermelon, and I chuckled, “Well, yes, I’m due for a new one. And by the way, I’ve only had this for two years.” Ahem. So off I went the very next day to the cell phone store. As I explained to my husband, “Honey, I can’t deny this century any longer. This mama is gettin’ back in the game.” I knew I needed a Smart
Phone, because everyone who knows anything about cell phones had told me so. And hey, if I’m investing in new technology, I’m not wasting money on an ignorant one. As I entered enemy territory, I boldly walked up to the counter and told the saleslady, “I’m ready to make an upgrade,” and I proudly slapped my flip-up down with a smack. “Which one?” she inquired, as she devilishly lifted up her right eyebrow and smirked. I think she was on to me. I had to keep up the façade. “I just can’t decide. Why don’t you walk me through them and highlight the features.” After listening to 14.2 minutes of descriptive features about cell phones, I closed my eyes and pointed. “I’ll take that one, and I want it in purple because I understand the importance of color.” This insight did not win her over. Thirty minutes later, after putting up a second mortgage on my house and handing over my diamond bracelet, I was safely in my car and staring at the keypad. Now what? I soon figured out why my new phone is called Smart. I had to pass an IQ test and undergo oral exams on my speaker phone before I was allowed to make a call. I flipped through the instruction book and saw nothing about having to provide proof of an advanced degree from MIT. Whew! And then my new phone began to talk. “If you’d like to make a call, press pound, sing “God Bless America” and perform the first five minutes of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video.” Huh? God Bless America is not in my range. “To listen to new messages, please enter your password and recite the second chapter of The Iliad in Latin.” Darn. I took French in college. I’m doomed. After three days of tutoring from my neighbor’s eighthgrader, I finally found out how to send a text message and access my email. I felt like I had climbed Mount Everest. I was so proud. Now if I can just figure out how to download an app!

Chateau Design Centre Our Story. Our Vision. Story by Michelle Momper Photos by Brenda Staples Photography Imagine walking into an old-European estate, where rich woods and textiles combine with breathtaking designs and magnificent artistry. Where every room contains the finest of tiles, flooring, cabinetry and electronics, causing your senses to stir and your imagination to take flight. And the best part of all … you don’t have to leave the country to get there. Such is the concept of the Chateau Design Centre, a brainchild of businessman turned dream-maker Bob Moore. The Chateau Design Centre is an architectural marketplace showcasing hand-carved residential cabinetry, top-of-the-line design products, and home furnishings. Visitors can lose themselves in French Country influences, Tuscan-inspired styles and Old World charm, with designs ranging from rustic casual to formal elegance. The concept of the Design Centre came to life for Moore after encountering a building crisis in 2005, while creating his dream home with his wife, Brynn. They had ordered custom, hand-carved cabinetry and furniture for their kitchen and other rooms throughout their home, and after investing a substantial deposit and then suffering project delays, the couple discovered the company was near bankruptcy.
The Chateau Design Centre, located in Carmel, Ind., is an architectural marketplace showcasing hand-carved residential cabinetry, top-of-the-line design products, and home furnishings, all under one roof.
“It was a horrible position to be in,” says Moore, who started investigating the cabinet company and realized that, although it was producing an exquisite product, it wasn’t being managed properly. So Moore did what any sensible entrepreneur with a background in financial services would do. He created a partnership with Sam Hollinger of Hollinger and Associates, one 4
The Chateau Design Centre’s fully functional Tuscan Butlers Kitchen can be utilized for a variety of customer events, including receptions, designer showings or cooking demonstrations.
“We dug up part of the parking lot and created an outdoor living space, called the Yorkshire Gardens, complete with a pergola, patio, fireplace and lush plantings,” Moore explains. The once sterile, cold interior was converted into a haven of deep colors, irresistible textures and fine-quality products. The rehabilitation did not go unnoticed, as the Centre received the Carmel Chamber of Commerce 2009 Look Award for Best Commercial Renovation.
of the top custom builders in Oklahoma. They leased some space and hired four of the employees.
Thus was born Chateau Designs, and Moore developed a successful multilocation provider of fine, customized and hand-carved cabinets and furniture. With a plant in Tulsa and a family of master artisans in Mexico, he developed what is now the go-to provider of high-end craftsmanship. And his brand new home became the showplace for future customers.
Once inside, visitors can explore magnificent, fully finished rooms that have been named according to their style and function, including the:
“I would regularly bring customers out to our home in order to show them the final product. I soon realized that they wanted to find out where we got our lighting or who provided our tile, and the idea of having designers and companies represented under one roof seemed like the next step,” Moore says.
• Grand Provence Kitchen • Moulin Rouge Theatre • Black Horse Pub
• Biltmore Library • Tuscan Butlers Kitchen • Grand Staircase
Yet to be named is a classic wine cellar, complete with custom wine racks and a wine-tasting table. Throughout the Centre, visitors will enjoy the sights and sounds of unique lighting and state-of-the-art electronics that complete the mood and experience.
Moore procured a business space in Carmel, IN, and with a team of designers led by his wife, was able to transform what was once a standard storefront into a warm, welcoming design marketplace.
The Centre’s Tuscan Butlers Kitchen is also fully functional, and can be utilized for a variety of customer events, including receptions, designer showings, cooking demonstrations, and other jointly sponsored or individually organized celebrations. In addition, the facility is available for meetings or receptions for select community groups.
In November, 2009, the doors of the Chateau Design Centre were opened, not only fulfilling Moore’s dream, but providing a one-stop experience for builders, designers and home-owners looking for unique and inspirational solutions. The Centre represents the efforts of 31 reputable, established companies that produce everything from metal works and flooring to countertops, tiles, textiles, painting, lighting and more.
“We offer the perfect atmosphere for not only clients, but for people who are looking for an unusual setting for their business or personal gathering,” says Moore. “It is a multi-purpose home environment with endless possibilities and countless inspirations,” he says.
“We couldn’t have realized this concept on our own,” explains Moore. “We have a group of wonderful partners who share the same vision. We all want to display our products or services in a way that inspires clients, and provides a true visual representation of the possibilities,” he says.
The Chateau Design Centre is located at 301 E. Carmel Drive in Carmel, Ind. For more information, call 317-294-3712.

Geist Resident Lora Koepper to Celebrate 100th Birthday in May By Janet Striebel
Friends and family will celebrate Lora Koepper’s 100th birthday with her next month.
The month of May brings a lot of excitement with the Indianapolis 500 Race, the mini-marathon, and even the Kentucky Derby. But this particular May will also prove to be an upbeat time for many who are celebrating the life of Lora Koepper, who is turning 100 years old. “I’ve seen lots of changes,” says Lora, who was born on May 2, 1910. Some of the many changes she has experienced include going from using outhouses to the luxury of indoor plumbing, resulting in numerous bathrooms and a lavish master suite within one home; from boiling water for washing dishes and clothes to the convenience of dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers; from writing and posting letters and waiting for answers to the efficiency of emails and instant messaging; from bosses preferring secretaries who took dictation to superiors who compose their own correspondence on the computer. In her lifetime, people have evolved from the “use it up, wear it out” mindset to “throw it away when one is tired of it.” Lora has witnessed the wonder of having one telephone in the home to having a cordless phone in every room and cell phones. She recalls working as a part-time switchboard operator, earning just 25 cents an hour. Lora currently lives in Admirals Bay with her son, Stephen Koepper, and his wife, Beverly, who are now both retired.
For 18 years, we have been creating outdoor spaces, where memories are made.

Eventually, Lora rode the Interurban (a trolley whose rails went all over the state) to Muncie, Indiana in 1928 when she attended Ball State University for one year. She left with a $200 scholarship, no money in her pocket, a suitcase in one hand, and a typewriter in the other. Unfortunately, Lora did not have the chance to complete college. First, due to the economic hardship during the Great Depression, Lora returned home to help support her older brother who was trying to finish his aeronautical engineering degree at Purdue. Secondly, Lora’s boyfriend, Norman Koepper, warned her that if she didn’t come home from school, that he was going to start dating around.
“Mom has always found a way to make the best of whatever situation,” says Stephen. “She is very trusting in God. She doesn’t worry about anything. She always seems to go with the flow.” One time when the car was not operational, Lora went to her doctor’s appointment while holding onto Stephen as he drove her on the motor scooter. He recalls how she willingly drove with him without ever complaining. Her carefree attitude has helped her cope with life’s misfortunes. Lora reflected on three heartrending events that she has endured.
Whiten up your smile for sunny days! • Cosmetic & comprehensive dentistry • Invisalign Preferred Provider • Zoom Whitening system • Laser Dentistry Digital x-rays • Sedation options • Dental emergencies seen promptly • Families and children welcome • Flexible financing
Not long after, Norman proposed to Lora on the tennis court near her home where they often played tennis. They courted each other for five years as they couldn’t afford the wedding with the economy. Eventually, Lora and Norman got married in 1935 and were married for 51 years. They lived at 10th and Hawthorne, and Lora still owns their home where she lived for sixty-eight years.

Together, Lora and Norman had three children, Paul, Susan, and Stephen, all of whom still live here in the Indianapolis area. Lora enjoys her eight grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. She attended St. Paul’s Lutheran for grade school. And yes, she did walk to school every day as you would have guessed. But can you believe that she also roller skated to school on occasion? Later, she went to Old Manual High School where she rode her bike daily, parking it in the furnace room because she didn’t have a lock.

“I’ve never had a dull moment,” recalls Lora, who has lived in Indianapolis all of her life, growing up in the Garfield Park area. She lived with her parents and two brothers, one older and the other younger. She admits, “I’ve always been a tomboy growing up with my brothers.” Surprisingly, the house in which she grew up near East Street is still standing today. Lora learned to drive as she helped her brothers with their paper route long before the era of driver’s licenses. She laughs as she explains how she drove the car while her legs were barely long enough to reach the pedals.
Lora worked nine years part time and over twenty years full time.

During my interview with Lora, I had the added pleasure of talking with Stephen and Beverly, who willingly helped complete the many mini-stories that were told. Stephen proudly sums up his mother’s accomplishments when he says, “She hit tennis balls with my sons and rode a bike until she was eighty, drove a car until she was ninety-six, and lived on her own until she was just about ninety-eight.”

First, when she was just a baby, she fell headfirst into a wooden bucket of water under the water pump at her aunt’s house. Thankfully, her mother saw her and pulled her out. Then when Lora was a preschooler, she fell through the bleachers at the Motor Speedway Track where her father manually flipped the numbers for updated laps. A doctor who happened to be present at the track said that even though she was knocked unconscious, Lora would be okay (if only he knew his prophecy and could see her here today!). Yet the biggest tragedy of all occurred when Lora was 37 years old. Her parents were traveling home from a funeral during a blizzard, when suddenly their car got struck by a large

truck carrying steel. Sadly, her mother died, while her father suffered a leg injury.
Favorite Memories Lora smiles as she recalls one of her favorite childhood memories — going to Niagara Falls with her family. She shows me the photo of the car in which her family traveled in upmost style. Her father had built a fold-out table that attached to the kitchen cupboard (which was on the running board of the car) that held cooking utensils such as the black wrought iron pan. Her dad and brothers slept on cots under a tent which unfolded from the other side of the car, while Lora and her mom slept inside the car. Other happy memories include setting up the family’s portable cottage on Eagle Creek (not reservoir) near Cossell Farms. As an adult, Lora made special memories with Norman and their three kids as they traveled to the Smoky Mountains every year for their family vacation. This had become a special tradition that Stephen still treasures and continues today. In fact, Stephen hopes to make another trip with his mom again this June.

Up until the age of ninety-six, while she was still driving, Lora visited her friends at nursing homes at mealtimes so she could help them eat, took their laundry home to wash, and helped them manage their finances if they had no family to care for them. Further, she dropped off church bulletins and pushed people in their wheelchairs to the Saturday services. Secondly, Lora believes in exercise and yoga. She has always been very active, especially in swimming. When she isn’t swimming at the Fishers YMCA, she is doing yoga. Besides performing one hundred bicycle movements per day as she lies on her back, she can also roll over backwards and touch her feet over her head onto the floor. If you ever meet her, she will willingly offer to demonstrate this maneuver just as she did for me!

Lastly, Lora believes in drinking a glass of milk with each of her three meals a day. Recently, however, Stephen has been preparing her a fruit smoothie for lunch. Lora always consumes two vegetables with her dinner. One veggie is green while the other is either beets or carrots. Stephen and Beverly admit that they have eaten much healthier since Lora has moved in with them.

Overall, Lora is a healthy, high-spirited, active lady who has had two bouts of pneumonia and currently has a second pacemaker. She does not use a cane or walker, preferring instead to hold onto the elbow of anyone who happens to be near her. She insists on keeping her bedroom on the second floor where she benefits from the exercise of going up and down the steps. (By the way, I witnessed her exceptional ability of going up and down the steps as she showed me her room with all her furniture, photos, and keepsakes kept from both sides of the family.)

Geist Graduation Party Planning on a Budget Enjoy the time with your family, hire Chef Suzanne Rockwell to cater your graduation party!
Story and photos by Mary Ryan
It’s hard enough that your baby boy, or baby girl, is getting shipped out to a faraway place; worst of all without you. On top of that, tradition demands that you throw them a party to celebrate their departure even though you could barely keep it together at graduation. The entire family is coming into town, as well as old college friends, neighbors, and several others. Sounds like this could be really tough for you, which is why I’m going

to share some great ways to put on the perfect open house for your grad on a dime, and also show how you can spend more time with your family and less time in the kitchen. Grandma is coming to town and loves to critique your cooking, and your old college friends are coming to wish your child well while sharing with them stories of your past… great. And there’s bound to be somebody you want to impress. The idea of a private chef can be intimidating to your budget, but Chef Suzanne offers a variety of tasty options to fit your needs. Her policy is, “It does not matter to us if your budget is large or small; every client is entitled to the same level of service and dedication to excellence. Our cuisine stands out from other caterers in the area because it tastes as wonderful as it looks and is affordable.” She knows hosts and hostesses are often concerned they will not have enough food to feed the masses. Chef Suzanne is very familiar with open houses, and says that the time of the event dictates the menu. An event that is from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. will require different types of food than a 5:00-8:00 p.m. party. In either case, she customizes the menus to fit each client’s needs. She can simply drop off food, which is the most economical, or she can fully staff a party. Visit www.ChefSuzanne.com for more information. Baking can be a difficult task, especially if you’re not savvy in the kitchen. Let’s be honest, most of us are not culinary geniuses. You want to give your grad a personalized cake, but the words fondant and piping are a foreign language. 38

Graduation Dates:
Let Taylor’s Bakery assist you with creating a very custom, very “taylored” look for your grad. Whether your grad is heading south to Indiana University or going north to Notre Dame, the staff at Taylor’s can create a look for you that’s sure to turn heads and tantalize taste buds. Not only can they include your soon to be freshman’s collegiate logo, but they can also take a personal photograph and have it put onto the cake via edible paper. Prices start at $24 for sheet cakes feeding 20 people and go up from there. But remember, not everyone will eat cake, so don’t feel like you have to have a slice per person. Co-owner Drew Allen, along with his father John and brother Matt Allen feel, “Being a 4th generation, family owned business, we take pride in every order that leaves our store!” If you’re looking for something different, Drew mentioned, “A lot of people have begun using pastries as an option other than cake. To satisfy that demand, we’ve created a pastry tray loaded with lemon bars, raspberry bars, turtle bars, brownies, pecan tarts, miniature éclairs and puff pastry cookies filled with cream cheese. The pastry tray costs $29.75 and it’s filled with 38 total pieces.” Nonetheless,

Now that you’re set on the food spread and the dessert, let’s move on to gift giving. This can be tough. It’s no secret your grad wants money, but most people don’t want to just hand over some cash and call it a day. Has the family started calling for ideas on what to give? They have towel wraps that girls and guys can wear when getting out of the group showers on their dorm floor, personalized laundry bags, picture frames, and much more. 2010 Teresa Downham of Everything Indiana will create a unique gift basket that can also serve as a centerpiece for the graduation party!
Teresa Downham puts a different spin on gift giving; the same could be said for centerpieces if you’ve seen her custom made gift baskets. Teresa is owner of Everything Indiana, a very cool business specializing in gift baskets for any occasion, but in our case, collegiate gifts. According to Teresa, her baskets stand out because of how unique their products are and the array of items that they can source for people. Even if they don’t carry a particular item in stock, chances are they know someone in Indiana that makes it. Better yet, if you don’t see a basket you like on her website she can still help, saying, “Another thing that makes us different from our competitors is our willingness to create custom baskets for clients.” If you’d like to add in a few items of your own like a gift card or piece of jewelry, that’s no problem. Just get them to her and she’ll work them into the basket. Not only will this make for a unique addition to your open house, but it’s sure to send your grad off feeling loved! Visit www.EverythingIndiana.com for more information. In Indiana, we never know what the weather is going to be like. If you want to take your party outside, let Elegant Tents provide you with coverage from the rain and sun. The Party Tree in Fishers, family owned, offers party throwers several collegiate options in addition to solid colors if you’re on a budget. You can customize your colors to match your grad’s future alma mater. They also have a plethora of “Class of 2010” décor, from centerpieces and yard signs to balloons and wall hangings. Several items start at just a few dollars. Owners Holly and Terry Howard have some great ways to fill up an empty space on a budget, saying, “Nothing fills up a big empty room for less like balloons! If our customer is on a really tight budget, they can rent helium from us and fill up the balloons themselves for roughly half the price! We have free party planners and checklists available for graduation to make it easier on our customers.” Visit www.PartyTree.net for more information. Now you have some great, locally owned resources to help you throw the perfect open house for your grad on a budget. Happy party planning! 42

Club Member to Pilot Sailboat in Famous Yacht Race What’s a nice guy from landlocked Carmel, Indiana, doing in a yacht race like this? For Chris Palabrica the answer is simple – it’s the chance to fulfill a lifelong sportsman’s dream, and to share it with a sister who is now in remission following several bouts with cancer. By Neal Moore Several Service Groups are working at waterstops along the Geist Half Marathon route: Fishers Tri Kappa, Northeast Indianapolis Rotary Club, Harvest Church, and the American Cancer Society. Please thank them as you run or walk the route.
The competition in question is the 47th Biennial Newport Bermuda Race, a 635-mile thrash from Newport, Rhode Island, across the Atlantic Ocean to Bermuda. Palabrica, 46, will pilot the firstever craft from Indianapolis to enter the famous race that’s been held every other year in mid-June since 1906. “My sister Theresa had talked about a sailing cruise through the Mediterranean,”
explained Palabrica. “But in short order we agreed that taking on this nautical challenge was more to our liking. I’m very proud of her adventurous spirit. We can’t wait to sail!” Palabrica’s home port is the Indianapolis Sailing Club at Geist Reservoir, although he keeps his boat, Sailor Bandido, on Lake Michigan, where final pre-race preparations are underway. The sailboat takes its name from Palabrica’s son, Sayler. The crew of six includes two other Indy area residents, Mike Crowell and Bob Solomon, as well as longtime sailing friends from Chicago and North Carolina. The Newport Bermuda race typically takes three to six days of nonstop sailing, most of the time out of sight of land. It is the longest race by distance and the oldest yacht race in North America – an expensive undertaking, and not for the faint of heart. “I’ve been sailing for 36 years and this always was a goal. The Bermuda Race is one of the top four international sailing races. There is an element of danger, but we’re fully prepared,” said Palabrica. Sailor Bandido will leave Newport on June 18, part of an armada of more than 180 crafts navigating the treacher-

ous, unpredictable waters of the mid-Atlantic. Their tactical challenge will be navigating the Gulf Stream while clipping along at speeds of four to five knots per hour. “I’ve been researching previous races, the various courses taken, and am confident that while we’ll be among the smallest craft taking part in the race, we’ll not be the slowest,” said Palabrica. Indeed, he and the crew are confident of a good showing in their division, the St. David’s Lighthouse Group (for amateur sailors). Trophies will be awarded at an elegant ceremony at Government House, the residence of Bermuda’s governor. Palabrica has teamed with the American Cancer Society and Indianapolis-based Little Red Door. The goal is to secure sponsorship dollars to offset expenses and for donation toward cancer treatment and prevention research. On Saturday,
April 17, a fundraising event was held at the Indianapolis Sailing Club where wellwishers and benefactors signed one of the sails that will be hoisted aboard the Sailor Bandido for the race. More information about the Newport Bermuda Race is available at www.bermudarace.com. For more information on the Indianapolis Sailing Club, visit www.indianapolissailing.org.

Proceeds from the event are donated back to area schools to promote health and wellness programs. “In talking with Joe (Trainor), we found that My Gym Children’s Fitness Center and the Geist Half Marathon Inc. share a common mission,” said Tom Britt, president and founding board member of the Geist Half Marathon. “We are excited to have their financial support, but even more importantly, have their community support to evangelize healthy lifestyles to our area youth.”
Don’t forget your furnace tune-up!

Picture of Health them onto my dress shirts for more than 60 years. It is not uncommon for people to ask me about certain food choices I have posted on my clothing for all my friends to see…
A neuroscientist at the University of California posts photos of everything he eats on his Facebook page. The expression “feed your face,” has taken on a new meaning. This professor claims that revealing your food choices to the world will motivate you to eat better.
Dick Wolfsie The Feather Cove I Wine Club is hosting a new waterstop on Courageous Drive during the Geist Half Marathon & 5K. If you would like to volunteer at this stop, contact Sharon at rscoble@sbcglobal.net. Thank you everyone!
“Looks delicious, Dick. Wasn’t that the special at the Olive Garden last week?” “Been to Victory Field, Dick? I recognize the mustard.” People are always imposing a visual record of their lives on others. I am tired of friends showing me their pets on their cell phones. Maybe Dr Garcia is right. I would rather see a serving of French fries than a French poodle. And I’ll make you a deal: If instead of an image of your cute little granddaughter on her trike, you show me a tasty slab of smoky ribs, I’ll still say: “aww, how cute.”
According to Dr. Garcia, he includes daytime snacks, late-night raids of the fridge, even the doughnuts he has stuffed in his glove compartment. He claims he has uploaded 9,000 pictures onto his Mac, which included a few dozen Big Macs, I might add.
My concern is that sharing your food intake publicly encourages cheating. You may have read, for example, how much dishonesty there is with online dating. Men and women fudge their age, for example. Talking about fudge, what’s to stop a woman from taking the Hershey bar she ate for lunch and with some Photoshop magic, turning it into a little plastic bag filled with baby carrots? Men are even more deceiving. Sure, it looks like a $45.00 ribeye from St. Elmo, but it’s really just a cheap piece of beef off the grill at Golden Corral. With men, always be wary of digital enhancements.
I’m not sure this is a totally new idea. Unlike the good doctor, I’ve been uploading meals and then downloading

The other problem is that you leave your entire culinary life open to wicked rebuke from the masses. If you think Bruno of Dancing with the Stars would be tough on your Cha Cha, wait till he critiques that Chimichanga you scarfed down for breakfast. “You suddenly pulled off onto the I-70 shoulder. Is everything okay? “I’m taking a photo of my fish sandwich.” “Sir, this time I’m just going to issue a warning: Those are really high in sodium.” Restaurants might try to benefit from this obsession with food photos. They already put little icons next to menu choices, so we’ll know which items are low in fat. Now we’ll also know which ones are high in resolution. The waitress will not only ask if you have room for dessert, but whether you have enough disk space. Is the meal dietetic? Who cares, as long as it’s photogenic. Personally, I don’t think posting your meal choices on Facebook will catch on, especially in Indiana. Hoosiers are good people with high moral standards. They don’t want their kids looking at corn all day on the Internet.

Two Fishers Teens Crusade to Raise $10,000 for Liberty Plaza By Tom Britt
Zach (left) and Ty (right) Hardin solicited sponsorships from local businesses at the Fishers Chamber luncheon to raise money for the Liberty Plaza memorial construction.
Two Fishers boys are leading the charge to raise $10,000 towards the construction of the Liberty Plaza memorial monument at the Fishers Town Hall. Zach (Junior at Park Tudor) and Ty (8th grader at HSE Junior High) Hardin pitched their idea to HSE superintendent Dr. Brian Smith in August of 2009. Each school will be challenged to fill a clear 5-gallon water cooler with change. The school that raises the most money in its water cooler will receive a free ice cream social party on the Town Hall Lawn following the 2010 Memorial Day Ceremony. Twenty local businesses are being sought to sponsor each individual school. Sponsoring businesses will match the money raised by their school up to $500. Funds raised by the schools and matched by the businesses then will be presented to the Liberty Plaza Committee at the 2010 Memorial Day Ceremony. Total cost of the Liberty Plaza is estimated to be $350,000 and will be raised entirely through donations. “We want to raise money and awareness of the project,” added Zach. If you own a business or would like to sponsor one or more of the 20 HSE schools, contact Zach or Ty Hardin at (317) 570-1840 or email jhardin5@comcast.net. Greece to Geist - Yanna Reflects on 5 Years in United States America is the opportunity,” says Yanna, who was born and raised in a small village called Fihtia, with her mother, father, and two older sisters. After studying anthropology and sociology at Panteion (Athens University) she worked various jobs such as a grocery store clerk and furniture store manager. Unfortunately, she never quite found her niche for job satisfaction—that is, until she came to Geist. Yanna says, “This is a big thing for me to start building a life. Someday I may have a family, but for now, this prospect is right for me.” Her uncle, George Katris, owner of five Lincoln Square Pancake Houses here in Indy, urged Yanna to leave the struggling economy of Greece and try visiting America to see where her fate would lead her. So, in April of 2005, Yanna came to visit George and her cousin, Chris Katris (partner with George). She stayed for six months, traveling for the first two. Soon after, she began working as a cashier at one of the Lincoln Square Pancake Houses. Upon her visa expiring, she returned home to Greece only to plan on coming back to America, where she now is the main manager of the Geist location. She communicates with her parents and sisters frequently through phone calls, emails and text messages. If you hear her speaking Greek, she is definitely talking to family! Yanna Tassopoulou, born and raised in Greece, came to Geist in 2005 with only a suitcase and hope. (Photo by Lauren Huffine)
S 6 YEAR
By Janet Striebel Four years ago, a young, very shy Greek woman named Yanna Tassopoulou (pronounced ta-so-pool’lou,) ventured to America to experience the “land of opportunity.” She came with nothing but a suitcase, very little money, and a whole lot of hope for a prosperous future.
“I love the customers at this location,” says Yanna. “They are very polite, friendly, and warm. They never complain.” Yanna plans to stay here and carry on her role as head manager and chief hostess. With every new day at the restaurant, Yanna views it as a way of life, a lifelong opportunity and her new home. The Geist Lincoln Square Pancake House (corner of Fox and Oaklandon), is celebrating its three-year anniversary this April. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch Monday-Saturday (7:00 am-4:00pm) and Sunday (7:00am – 3:00pm). The other four locations are 21st and Shadeland, 56th and Emerson Way, Westfield and Greenwood.

The Bonds of Money We all know our government likes to spend money like a drunken sailor, but a lot of us don’t like to think about how dangerous that can be. We read about $trillions here and $trillions there, and our gut tells us this is going to be hell for our kids and grandkids, but it doesn’t feel like a tangible problem today. Here is a snapshot of the situation and why it can represent a problem for your portfolio right now. In 2008, after the housing market slow down caught up with the banks, the U.S. government decided it was smart to throw an unprecedented amount of money into the system in order to save us from ourselves. They borrowed some of this money from people and governments through the sale of bonds. The rest they just printed in the basement. If you bought a U.S. government bond in the last two years, then you helped support some of this crazy spending. A simple economic law states that the more you borrow, the higher your borrowing costs will be. In other words, if you already have a lot of debt, then you will pay a higher interest rate to borrow more money. That is our government today.
money in the next few years. As interest rates go higher, the value of the bonds they sold before (the stuff we own now) drops. U.S. government bonds generally control the direction of bond prices across the board, except for junk and some corporate. The bottom line is that investors are going to start to lose a lot of money in the bond market, and it is because of the massive debt load of the U.S. government. By J. Andy Murphy People like stories, especially true stories. I have one I’d like to share with you. It’s a story I wasn’t expecting, but sitting at Mama Bear’s with Joe Trainor, Jr. (My Gym, Fishers) across from me, it unfolded . . . Imagine flying in the dark in the belly of an airplane knowing full well that what lies beneath you are individuals waiting in the rugged terrain who know you are coming and who have taken an oath to kill you. Imagine the feeling of jumping out of that plane into that blackness with an 80-pound rucksack attached to a parachute har-
ness strapped to your body. The hot wind takes your breath away as the hard ground quickly comes up to meet you. You land. Hard, off balance. Your body is slammed into the cement-like packed sand and your shoulder takes the severe blunt of the fall. Pain, unbelievable pain tears through your whole body. You struggle to disengage yourself from what seems like miles of string and equipment all entangled around you. You’re sweating profusely and the thirst for just a drop of water rages in your mouth. A voice in your head kicks in telling you to calm down. Breathe, use your strength to roll over. Assess the situation, figure your odds. Lying there, looking up into the sky as you drift deeper into the shock of injury, your eyes focus on stick figures attached to what looks like open umbrellas with strings attached to their narrow bodies. They’re floating down in a kind of slow motion, visible now within the light of the moon, peeking in and out between the midnight clouds . . . It’s an odd, but beautiful sight, and if death would lie down beside you in the next few moments, so be it. The one thought that fills your mind as you drift away is: I am a Ranger, and whatever it takes to survive, I’ll do. No matter what. 60
Geist Community Newsletter
When you learn what Rangers are all about, it’s not hard to imagine that against all odds, you would survive this night and this difficult injury, and in a matter of months, volunteer to do it all over again. Imagine that! This is a true story. It’s just part of the amazing journey that fills the resume pages of one Joseph Edward Trainor, Jr. He comes from an impressive family. He was born in Fairfax, Virginia and moved to Pittsburgh when he was eight years old. His father, Joseph Trainor, Sr., was deputy director of the United States Secret Service. He served in this position for 28 years before retiring to become the co-founder/ vice president of U.S. Wind Force, LLC. His sister, Jessica, attends Boston College and is studying opera as a music major. She has already performed at the Vatican for the Pope. His stepbrother, Jeremiah Henderson, serves with the United States Special Forces, 7th Division group out of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. In his junior year of high school (1998), Joe had made up his mind to join the Army. He wanted to be a Ranger. This was one of many goals. He ended up in Special Operations as a U.S. Army Ranger stationed with “C” Company, 3rd Ranger Battalion at Ft. Benning, Georgia. I asked Joe why becoming a Ranger was so important to him. “My father is my idol. I so admired everything about him. I wanted to push myself to be strong, to stand for the same principles in life that he presented to his family every step of
the way as we were growing up. I felt if I could make it through the rugged training and sacrifice it takes to become an Army Ranger, I would be prepared for anything,” he answered shyly. “I also felt it might help me figure out what I wanted to do with my life.”
Attention GHPOA Residents: Please do not tape signs to the black street signs within the GHPOA neighborhoods. Residue from the tape is unsightly and damages the finish. This includes graduation, garage sale, lost pet, or other signage. Thank you for your cooperation.
When a 60 percent disability ended his career in the Army in 2002 from his two tours in Afghanistan, Joe reached out to another Ranger buddy living in Peru, Indiana.
Food Drive at Packet Pick Up: The Geist Half Marathon Inc. is coordinating with two local food shelters to collect canned goods and nonperishables at the packet pick up on May 21 at HSE High School. Bring your donations and help the local Geist community!

(From Previous Page) my car and talk my way in,” he states with a broad smile, blue eyes twinkling with the memory of what his buddy had said. He packed his bags and drove straight to the dean’s office from Georgia. “Life sometimes gives you help with a little bit of luck. When I stood at the gatekeeper’s desk and asked to see the dean, she asked if I had an appointment. I didn’t. She said no. That didn’t stop me. I asked to see the assistant dean; she again said no, but just then, a man walked up beside me and it was the assistant dean. He said he had a few moments. I gave it my all. I asked for a chance to prove that I had what it took to be a student, a good student. I knew my high school records wouldn’t reflect that, but that my time spent in the Army as a Ranger would. All I wanted was a second chance.” The assistant dean gave Joe that chance. Two months later, he was a freshman at Indiana University. His major was that of a Fitness Specialist. In his senior year, Joe felt the need to take a leave from school to form an Internet company called Success After Service. It was designed to help other veterans locate important information needed to travel the huge maze of Army red tape for benefits. It was a great idea, but not all great ideas end up successful in play. Some people may not want to share their failures, but Joe isn’t one of those people. “I failed miserably with this venture, but it was a great learning experience, which followed along the guidelines of an old saying, ‘I would rather try and fail than never try at all,’” he

adds with a bit of first-hand experience present on his face. “When this went down, I had spent most of my savings. I ended up getting a job in Indianapolis at the zoo as a night watchman. I was spent and felt as if I had fallen down from everything I wanted to accomplish in life. During a shift break, I once again looked up at the dark sky and realized that falling down doesn’t mean you can’t get up again,” he adds.
$
A hail storm that hit in downtown Indianapolis put him up on his feet once again. He got a new job with a company that specialized in storm restoration, and learned everything he could from the bottom up. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Joe formed a new company specializing in commercial and residential real estate restoration, and headed out to do what he could to help restore the city. The company flourished, and when he least expected it, another business opportunity landed in his lap which led to the purchase of My Gym Children’s Fitness Center on February 9, 2009 with good friend, Kendall Robinson.

Do you not like what you see in the mirror? A rhinoplasty (nose job) is designed to better balance the nose with your facial features. Each face is different, and every rhinoplasty is unique, depending upon your objectives. Surgery can also improve nasal function. Summer is a common time for this procedure, and high school or college students can go back to school with improved self-esteem! The cost of the procedure varies depending on the extent of surgery but ranges $4700-6000 (total). With over a decade of experience, Dr. Catherine Winslow is one of the most experienced facial plastic and rhinoplasty surgeons in the country, and would be happy to consult with photo morphing to show you what changes are possible. Get in the Mood for Summer: Pesto Chicken Salad
Pesto Chicken Salad
• 3 boneless chicken breasts • 1/3 red pepper, diced • 1 small onion, diced • 1 teaspoon minced garlic • 6 fresh basil leaves, finely chopped or about 2 teaspoons dried basil (fresh organic basil leaves used here) • ½ cup mayo with olive oil or regular mayo/salad dressing (Kraft Mayo with Olive Oil used here) • ¼ cup Italian dressing • ½ cup pine nuts, walnuts, pecans, or sliced almonds • Salt • Dried basil Boil chicken breasts until tender (about 30 minutes) and drain. Refrigerate for at least an hour. This will prevent chicken from shredding when you cut it into pieces.

Most of us are excited as summer is almost here. My family enjoys Pesto Chicken Salad even in the midst of the winter season, probably because it reminds us of summertime with warm days of sunshine and the sound of boats parading on Geist. In fact, Pesto Chicken Salad sandwiches make a great lunch or dinner on any boat! This tasty recipe is great on croissants, ciabatta sandwich rolls, pumpernickel bread, or crackers.
In a large bowl, combine chopped red pepper, onion, garlic, basil, mayo, Italian dressing and favorite nuts. Cut refrigerated chicken into bite sized pieces. Sprinkle with salt and dried basil while still on cutting board. Add chicken to pesto blend and mix well. Serve with your favorite bread or crackers. This recipe goes especially well with pasta salad. Look for the “Italian Rainbow Pasta Salad” in an upcoming issue!

Zebra Mussels Found in Geist Could Affect Water Supply, Boats another undesirable species—an adult zebra mussel. “That’s one invasive species colonizing on another,” said Doug Keller, aquatic invasive species coordinator with the DNR Division of Fish and Wildlife. The find could signal trouble for Geist, much as the mussel’s presence has affected other waters. Previously found in more than 65 bodies of water in 44 counties throughout Indiana, the discovery marks the first time that the mussel has been found in the Indianapolis area. Zebra mussels were also discovered last year in Summit Lake, the first population known to occur in Henry County. Keller said the effect of zebra mussels can be devastating where the invasive species successfully colonizes.
This small zebra mussel was found in Geist attached to this Chinese mystery snail (left).
A marina worker at Geist Reservoir hooked a Chinese mystery snail, an exotic species already prominent in the reservoir, while fishing recently, and on it was
“Zebra mussels can rapidly multiply and are known for clogging drainage and filtration pipes,” Keller said. “Besides pipes, they can attach to virtually anything in the water column, including rocks, limbs, piers or even boats.” Geist is one of three water supply reservoirs for the Indianapolis area. Keller said that as zebra mussel numbers increase in Geist and downstream in Fall Creek, there could be negative impacts to the water utility’s withdraw capacity.

Zebra mussels are originally from Europe, and spread rapidly across North America in the 1990s. Aside from being a costly nuisance to humans, zebra mussels may also cause declines in fish populations. By filtering tiny plants, called phytoplankton, out of the water column, zebra mussels diminish the base of the food chain, potentially causing declines in all other aquatic life, including fish.
This
Summer, the Savings are Electrifying!
Keller said that few options for eradicating the mussel exist, short of eliminating every other living thing in the reservoir. The best means of control, he said, is by educating boaters about preventing further spread of the mussel.

Typically, zebra mussels are transported by human recreational activities such as boating or fishing. A few simple steps can prevent the spread of zebra mussels and other invasive species. Removing all aquatic vegetation and draining livewells, bilge, water lines and boat trailers at access ramps will prevent transport of the mollusk to other waters. Drying equipment after each use also is important.

HSE Varsity Baseball Wins Over LN in Opener Spring sports are in action. Whether it be baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, golf or track and field, you or someone you know is “in the game.” Recently, Hamilton Southeastern and Lawrence North faced off, bringing America’s favorite past-time back to life. Like many spring days in Indiana, the weather was rainy and windy, but both the ritual of preparation and anticipation were indeed there. After the meeting of the coaches and the national anthem, the words “play ball” sounded from behind home plate. Head coaches Richard Winzenread (LN) and Scott
Johnson (HSE) shake hands before the game. The batters stepped into the batter’s box, pausing to tap the dirt clods off their cleats and adjust their helmets. Pitchers stared back from the mound, communicating in code to their catchers as to their next pitch. Baseball has always been, and always will be, a game full of rituals. Lawrence North took an early lead with a two-run homer in the first inning by junior Cory Meixner. The Wildcats kept the lead until the fifth inning when Hamilton Southeastern’s Chris Irwin hit a two-run homer of his own that led a scoring momentum, including another solo homerun by Christian Struck and several Royal RBI’s. This momentum led the team to a 10-5 win over the Wildcats. For more photos, visit www.atGeist.com. (Top) HSE team members huddle before taking the field. (Left) Cory Meixner after his two-run homer. Advances in Oral Cancer Detection
floor of the mouth below the tongue, the bony roof of the mouth, and the area behind the wisdom teeth.
By Lorene Colgan Olio Dental of Fishers, Indiana wants to make you aware of oral cancer. Dr. Robert A. Phillips has your long-term health in mind and wants to educate the public about this deadly killer. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2009 an estimated 35,720 new cases of oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer will be diagnosed in the United States, causing approximately 7,600 deaths. Dr. Robert A. Phillips of Olio Dental is shown here with a new VELscope device which is able to detect various forms of oral cancer.
Oropharyngeal cancer develops in the part of the throat just behind the mouth, called the oropharynx. This is sometimes called throat cancer and begins where the oral cavity stops. Oropharyngeal includes the base of the back third of the tongue, and the back part of the roof of the mouth, including the tonsils, and the side and back wall of the throat. The oral cavity and oropharynx have several types of body tissues, and each of these tissues is made up of several types of cells. Different cancers can develop from each type of cell. The differences are very important, because they can influence a person’s treatment options. Oral cancer is typically discovered in the late stages and gives a patient a survival rate of only 22%. If the cancer is detected in the early stages, then the survival rate is around 80% or higher.
Oral cavity is a type of cancer that starts in the mouth and includes the lips, the inside lining of the lips and cheeks. Oral cavity cancer also includes the teeth, gums and the front two-thirds of the tongue, the
The good news is the new device called the VELscope powered by Sapphire. The VELscope is able to detect potential health problems earlier. The FDA and Health Canada recently cleared VELscope for assisting dentists and hygienists in discovering cancerous and precancerous growths that may not be normally apparent during a routine visual exam. The process is completely free of pain and
