Meet Your Neighbor: Racing Sensation Eric Morrow

It’s the month of May—a time for checkered flags, fast laps and rising stars at the track.

This racing season, you don’t have to look very far to find some up-and-coming talent in the world of racing. Eighteenyear-old Eric Morrow is your Geist neighbor and a young driver in the 2007 Formula BMW racing season.

As part of that racing season, Morrow will drive at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this summer for the first time ever, in a supporting race for the United States Grand Prix.

Morrow will look at the track this month in a different light.

“I can’t believe it,” says Morrow.

“I’ll be driving at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; it’s a dream come true!”

A senior at Lawrence Central who lives in the Windsong neighborhood, Morrow is a Triple Crown National Karting Champion in the World Kart Association. He recently made his way to the Hearn Motorsports team (led by Richie Hearn of the Indy Racing League) after becoming one of only five Formula BMW Scholarship winners in the world for the 2007 season. Two of those five winners, by the way, are from Indy (18-year-old Southside resident Timothy Hollowell of TADD Motorsports Team is the other winner).

Formula BMW has become one of the top choices of karters to make the progression to race cars. They take talented young drivers such as Eric Morrow, who have outgrown the kart track and introduce them to professional motor racing.

Morrow’s family says the boy’s love for speed started as a child.

“When he first took off on a jet ski, his father said, ‘That kid has a need for speed!’” says Eric’s mother, Carole.

Rick Morrow was right. When the childhood soccer games just weren’t “fast” enough any longer, Eric’s attention turned

to go-Kart racing.

Along with entering World Karting Association Triple Crown Club in 2005, Eric’s list of accomplishments date back to 2002.

He has a living room (and other rooms in the house) full of trophies, plaques, ribbons and magazine covers to prove it.

The “car” theme seems to run in the Morrow family. Dad Rick is a technician at Euro Motorworks Inc. (7314 E. 90th St.). Eric’s brother, Alan, will be a senior at Purdue University this fall, studying mechanical engineering.

Keep your Student’s Skills Sharp this Summer

With school almost out for the year, you may be asking yourself how to keep academics as part of the summer break plans.

Do any of these questions sound familiar: How will my average student compare next year when the requirements get even harder?

What program would work if my child has special needs? Can my child learn Spanish or French?

Will my teen score well on the SAT or manage study skills appropriately? These issues and more can be solved on the quest to keep our kids in the game of academia.

There are several tutoring options for students who need some extra help this summer, as well as enrichment programs for those looking to keep their kids’ brains active over the break.

There is a wonderful program right in the Geist area founded by Amy Riesmeyer where kids can learn Spanish or French. She has been a volunteer with the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and numerous children’s athletic and educational programs. She graduated from TASIS (The American School in Switzerland) and later wanted her children to be exposed to different cultures and languages right here in Fishers. The idea of the foundation is that “children are exposed to a second language through songs, games, stories, crafts and snacks. The curriculum is designed to encourage children to speak a second language while having fun. Classes are led by teachers who are native speakers of French or Spanish.”

Holy Cross Lutheran Church Plans to Expand School to Eighth Grade Geist residents soon will have another option when it comes to educating their children.

Lutheran School Accreditation Committee, a designation held by only five Lutheran preschools in the state. Grade school tuition is expected to be around $4,000 annually, and financial assistance will be available.

Holy Cross Lutheran Church has acquired 20 acres to the east and south of its current location at the corner of Fox and Oaklandon roads, and plans are in the works to expand the church’s school to accommodate children up to 8th grade.

Currently, the church operates a preschool and kindergarten program with about 270 students. Next year, the school will add an additional kindergarten class and open a first grade class using portable classrooms, said school Administrator Michelle Searcy.

Two-thirds of the money raised is used for the kind of equipment advancement that makes Riley Hospital one the most respected children’s hospitals in the country. The other third is spent to help make a child’s time at Riley as pleasant as possible, including items such as toys, video games, books and Jim and Cindy Arnold of Kahn’s stuffed animals.

HSE Students Learn Chinese

exposure to Chinese is great for the kids, especially considering today’s business enviroment.

Students enjoy the class, but Chinese is a difficult language to learn, she adds.

A typical day in First Grade at New Britton Elementary School is not so typical these days, after all. That’s because along with reading, writing and ‘rithmetic, these kids are learning Chinese!

The Hamilton Southeastern School District was selected as one of the districts to study Mandarin Chinese by the Department of Education this year. A one-year Taiwan Teacher Exchange Program was set up, and Instructor Chiafang (Joey) Tsai arrived to start the pilot program at New Britton, Fishers and Hoosier Road elementaries.

U.S.O. Show at Indian Creek Elementary Honors WWII Veterans

It wasn’t your average “Honor the Veterans” program where veterans might come for a luncheon, listen to a few speakers, maybe receive small tokens of appreciation and leave an hour later.

Stephen Hardwick and his 5th grade class at Indian Creek Elementary poured their hearts and souls into their 2 ½-hour, 7th annual tribute to WWII veterans, with a U.S.O. style show honoring these sometimes forgotten true American heroes.

graders playing in a full (faux) brass band.

While dining on their lunches, the Veterans enjoyed entertainment provided by the 5th graders and Mr. Hardwick as Jack Benny.

There were musical numbers, dance numbers and skits all done in a 1940s theme. A slide show of pictures of the Veterans from the ’40s ran while each of the 47 in

Shepherd Community Hosts Summer Day Camp for At-Risk Children and Needs Your Help

Summertime is a season when kids are supposed to have fun splashing in the pool, playing sports and taking a break from school, right?Unfortunately, summer does not hold that promise for many kids on Indy’s East side. That is, unless they were one of the first 150 kids to sign up for the Shepherd Community Summer Day Camp.

“We filled the 150 spots in just three days, and there is already a waiting list that keeps growing,” said Autumn Weil, Assistant Site Coordinator of the Shepherd Community Center.

Each child pays $1 per week ($9 for the total nine weeks!), but the actual cost per week is $89 per child.

Within the IPS district, 70 percent of adults are illiterate, and just 30 percent of children will graduate.

“But every child that comes through our program and continues through high school, graduates,” Weil says proudly.

“This year, all five senior students are graduating and plan to attend college.

One student of those students will receive an academic scholarship. She is one of seven children and the first in her family to go to college.

Terri Miller from Portraiture Studios in Fishers felt moved to reach out to this student and acknowledge her hard work.

Terri is donating a senior portrait package to this special graduate. When asked why she wanted to do this, she replied: “I thought that this (getting senior pictures taken) was something very special students here in Fishers expect to have when they graduate

It used to be that the patio, porch and BBQ areas had simple areas to sit, grill—and that was it. Now more and more people are finding that outdoor entertaining is a fun way to “step out of the norm” and provide an atmosphere for their guests that is focused on relaxation.

If you do entertain a great deal, then you will want to provide adequate seating for your expected number of guests knowing that 30 percent will probably end up standing… snacking and moving around from conversation to conversation. Your seating arrangement needs to be a comfortable distance from the grill and close to focal areas such as the pool or a section of landscaping that is visually appealing. Many of our clients ask, “Do I need table space to accommodate every seat?” The answer is “No”! Depending on your patio or exterior area, the rule of thumb is, have additional seating equal to the number of seats at your outdoor table. A perfect example would be: If you have a patio table with eight chairs, then have additional seating elsewhere for eight, such as an outdoor sofa… No, not that dreadful white whicker stuff our mothers made us sit on, real outdoor furniture. Anymore you can hardly tell an indoor sofa from an outdoor one. Include two chairs near the sofa and off to the May 2007

side, or on the other end of the patio, create a conversation area of 4 to 5 comfortable chairs placed in a circle. This can be done around a fire pit or just a small round cocktail table.

Before you realize it, now there are three separate seating areas allowing guests to move from area to area. By having different “types” of seating areas, you keep your event interesting.

Conversation tends to change with scenery.

Most clients wonder about seating around the pool area. You will want lounge chairs for this area. Another great idea, if your pool side area has the room, is to put a small “pub” type table in a corner with an umbrella for shade. This is a very attractive look and will add a bit of interest to the pool area. Besides, who wouldn’t love to jump out of the pool and take a shaded seat while sipping some fresh lemonade?

Creating several smaller seating areas will allow guests to flow casually in and out of groups.

Vitamins from Admiral’s Sound Help Nourish Kids in Haiti

If you happened to be driving around Admiral’s Sound one day near the end of winter, you might have noticed bags and boxes filled with vitamins, waiting to be collected by a young neighbor. And if you’re a resident who donated some of those vitamins to 14-year-old

Craig Siebe, you may be wondering where they ended up.

“The vitamins really are so essential,” said Laura Moehling, who coordinates the mission trips for Our Lady of Mount Carmel. “Many, many children die in Haiti of malnutrition.”

Craig, an eighth-grader at St. Simon School, asked his neighbors to set out this specific donation so he could send the vitamins to malnourished children in Haiti. It was a project he initiated to earn his Eagle Scout Badge.

Craig also asked local pharmacies and the St. Simon community to contribute vitamins, but the largest outpouring came from Admiral’s Sound. Overall, he collected more than 60,000 vitamins – enough for nearly 600 children (and some adults) to receive a 90-day supply. With help from Boy Scout troop #446, Craig then sorted them into 90-day packets.

“Our garage literally was full of vitamins from the Admiral’s Sound drive,” said his mother, Sandy. “Everyone pulling together from one neighborhood to make such a difference – it

kind of goes to show one person can accomplish a lot.”

If you walked in the front doors of Forest Glen Elementary School May 11, suddenly you were part of an African Marketplace, with colorfully dressed vendors selling their homemade wares. African dolls, jewelry and masks were among the hundreds of items for “sale” during the hour-long African Market put on by the second grade.

Students spent weeks preparing for the event – making items to sell, setting prices for their wares and creating costumes. $1,000,000! I couldn’t believe it. It was the best day of my life. Then I remembered something, my parents are addicted to money. They have to have a lot of money. If they find out that I found $1,000,00 it’s going to be the best day of their lives. I sat there for a minute and decided what to do.

I finally thought I should just tell them I found the money and it’s mine. That didn’t work out too well though. When I went home and I told my parents I found $1,000,000 they freaked out! This is what they said, “You found $1,000,000, give me, give me, give me.” They started running after me and saying, “Tara, give me that money or you will

be sorry.” That didn’t stop me though. It was my money and they weren’t getting their hands on even $1.00. It was all mine, mine, mine! I was sounding ridiculous. They finally caught me and did something I never thought they would do. They ate my money! My money, what did you do to my money, you rotten no good money eating parents.” I said. Who needs parents anyway. Maybe I should… wait, I’m… “We ate your money. We were just so hungry. We couldn’t control ourselves,” said my parents.

I knew it was 1859 because I was sitting in a train that I had read about in a book for school. The part of the train that I was sitting in was called a caboose. The caboose was bright apple red and smelled strongly of coal. The train I was in was moving and I could see other trains out my window. The people around me were not passengers, they were

workers. They were wearing black suits that looked like tuxedos. The workers were very nice and offered me some food.

They showed me where the conductor of the train sat, and they showed me how the train worked. The conductor was very kind; he showed me what he did and how he managed the train. The conductor told me that we were on the Monon Route, also called the Hoosier Line, and that we were headed for Fishers. As we were slowing down I said goodbye to all the considerate people that helped me on the journey. I got off the train and ended up back behind the bush and found the same box I’d had before, but it looked brand new. I opened the box and got swooped back into my own time. As I was walking back to my house, I saw a little boy walking toward the bush and I

started laughing thinking about the adventure he would have.

Geist Residents Support Race for the Cure and More

More than 60 Geist residents were among the 39,000 walkers/runners who took part in the 16th annual Race for the Cure on April 21st in downtown Indianapolis.

Daylight Savings Time Means Later Meals at Local Restaurants

Picture a day in June when the sunset ranges from 9 p.m. to 9:15 or later. Folks are outside in the yard working when it starts to turn dusk and they realize they’re hungry. When they look at the time and notice it’s 9 p.m. already, most just think it is too late to eat out.

Families with young children especially feel this way because the kids have been running around all evening and are in need of a bath right away. By the time showers are taken and everyone is ready, it would be 10 p.m. easy. Far too late for dinner out, right?

Wrong.

Lars Tully from The Nickel Plate Bar and Grill in Fishers simply says: “Roll with it.”

That’s what being a restaurant owner/manager does.

When Daylight Savings Time caused summer days to be longer last year, he noticed evenings were not as busy in the restaurant as they had been the previous year. Now he leaves closing times open ended and up to the situation.

If they normally close the kitchen at 10:30, then they will simply keep it open

longer dependent upon customers.

Paul with Casler’s stated that they have definitely noticed a later crowd. In the winter, you might see patrons a little earlier, but it is dark at 5 p.m. with no yard work to be done.

He says summer is also cookout season; nevertheless, he expects steady and later crowd at Casler’s.

They want people to feel like they can still come out and enjoy a friendly meal, no matter what the clock says.

Mama Bears tends to notice a shift in business when the clocks first change, says owner Jaye McCormick. For her, the changes take place in the mornings when people are sleeping later or adjusting to the new hour-shifted schedules. The first few weeks of a time change are a little slower than normal until people get used to it, and it gets lighter earlier.

LC Gymnatics Team Wins State Title Lawrence Central’s gymnastics team recently claimed its first state championship in the IHSAA Gymnastics State Finals at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis.
