People debate whether love at first sight is real, but Drew Schauss knows that it’s true because he experienced it firsthand. Growing up in high school gymnasiums watching his father coach varsity basketball, he fell hard and fast. “Basketball is my love at first sight,” says Schauss, who was an all-state star in the sport, earning a scholarship to play at Brevard College in North Carolina, then later at Bethel University in Mishawaka, Indiana.
AVON HIGH SCHOOL WELCOMES TWO NEW BASKETBALL COACHES
For six years he was the assistant coach at a small college, and then he became the head boys basketball coach at Logansport High School until he recently landed the head boys basketball coaching job at Avon High School (AHS). He applied for the position because he was intrigued by the amount of growth

Avon has experienced in recent years. The school itself has expanded tremendously in the last 20 years and is projected to grow more in the next 10 to 15 years. “You don’t often have the opportunity to take over a program that’s experiencing that kind of growth, and then you add to that the number of successful athletics,” says Schauss, noting that a lot of the programs have been successful, particularly football, volleyball, baseball, track and swimming. Basketball has been on the cusp for a while, with the team having won a sectional in 2017. When it comes to building a successful team, one of the first things Schauss does is demonstrate the importance of community. Therefore, he and his players cheer on other Avon sports by attending games as a team. Attending these games, matches and meets not only builds camaraderie, but also shows the Avon student body that everyone on the basketball team supports them. When his players are perfecting their own skills, they give it their all, always leaving it all out on the court. Schauss enjoys seeing their hard work pay off. “People don’t see the practices, the workouts and what they do in the weight room, so to watch these students go out and perform well at a high level - I love the excitement on their faces,” Schauss says.
“I THINK PEOPLE WILL ENJOY WATCHING US PLAY. THEY’LL BE ABLE TO SEE THE ENERGY AND EFFORT THE TEAM BRINGS. THIS IS A REALLY LIKABLE GROUP OF ATHLETES THAT PEOPLE WILL GET ON THEIR FEET AND CHEER FOR.” -DREW SCHAUSS-
Another new hire at AHS athletics is the girls basketball coach, Will Staal, who grew up on the north side of Indianapolis. He got involved in sports early on, playing in recreational leagues, and developed a love of coaching when he was in high school. When Staal was in elementary school, his father, who was an Indianapolis police officer, worked the NCAA Final Four in 2000. Before the games started, his dad asked him which school’s T-shirt he would like. Staal said Wisconsin. It turned out that the Badgers shirts were sold out, so his dad brought home a Michigan State 8 / AVON MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2022 / TownePost.com
Spartans shirt. “MSU ended up winning the national title,” Staal says. “It’s weird to think that if they’d had an adult small or a youth large in Wisconsin, I might not have been a Michigan State fan.” Still, deep down he’s a Hoosier through and through, and since he had aspirations to coach basketball, there is no better place for him to be. His coaching career has taken him all over the state, including Westfield, Fishers, Waldron, and Terre Haute South Vigo high schools. He enjoyed those coaching gigs, but when he saw that AHS was hiring, applying was a no-brainer. “I’m not lying when I say I feel like I have the best job in the state, in terms of possibility,” he says. He was pleased to join the faculty at the end of May in 2021 so that he had June

with students well before they enter high school. That’s why Staal and his colleagues coach the Indy Girls Hoops League, a travel basketball team for third- through eighth-grade girls.
“It was an immersive experience,” he says. “You can’t win a state title or sectional title in the summer, but you sure can lose one.”
“That’s what you have to do to be successful or even have a chance to compete in our conference,” Staal says. “You’ve got to be proactive in participating in youth programs in order to build that foundation.”
Spring 2020 athletes missed out on fellowship, problem solving, and many lessons that are the bedrock of high school athletics. Now coaches are seeing students come in who need to be caught up in these areas.
Both Staal and Schauss were hired at the end of what, in many ways, was a stressful year. The pandemic did, however, provide a fresh perspective on life, sports and the way the two work together.
“If anything, the pandemic has taught coaches to take a step back, breathe and give people grace,” Staal says. “We tend to look at players as athletes, but they are still growing children. I’m glad that the spotlight has been put on their mental well-being because our job, first and foremost, is to keep these children safe.”
Both Staal and Schauss are all about creating a positive atmosphere that will enable their athletes to make lifelong connections and memories. “People won’t remember our record, but they’ll remember how our team treats people,” Staal says. “As for the students, they’ll remember how they felt hanging out as a team and that’s the biggest part.” Building a high school program includes
There are many social and emotional skills learned in team and individual sports, but throughout the pandemic students had to spend a big chunk of
“When our student-athletes got quarantined, they were not just missing school,” Staal says. “They were missing the ability to be with their friends.”
Schauss agrees.

focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a condition in which filters in one’s kidneys wear down and stop working. In short, his kidneys were functioning at 40%. “This was a huge surprise,” says Broughton, who was just 32 at the time. Once he learned how sick he was, surgery to fix his hip was off the table. The doctor told him it was a matter of time before his kidneys failed. Because the condition was irreversible, in December of 2013 Broughton was medically retired from the Army. By March of 2014, he was extremely ill. “I was exhausted and nauseated every day,” Broughton says. “My ankles and calves swelled because I was retaining fluid, and my skin was gray.” In May of 2014 he started dialysis at a veterans hospital, where he was the youngest patient by 25 years. “Dialysis is way more difficult than anything I ever did in the Army,” Broughton says. Though he desperately needed a new kidney, he wouldn’t let his wife be a donor because he knew his condition could be passed on,
and he wanted to be sure that if one of his daughters had issues, Kristi could potentially be a good match. His parents and several friends got tested, but no luck. In February of 2015 he got an infection in his port and ended up in the hospital with sepsis. Within two days, he was at death’s door. He was on a transplant list, but he knew full well how many people die while awaiting a transplant. Though it was a long shot, he posted a plea on Facebook requesting a donor. “It was my Hail Mary pass,” he says. His condition improved enough for him to be discharged from the hospital, but he was still hurting greatly. Three months passed and then one day a man named Andrew Coughlan, another Army veteran who had served with him during his first deployment, contacted him. “I saw your post on Facebook,” Coughlan said at the time. “I’ve been doing these tests without you knowing, because I didn’t want you to get your hopes up. Turns out, I’m a match.”
JANUARY 2022
The two men had been in the same company but had served on different missions. They didn’t go to basic training together or serve in the same platoon. Still, despite not being close, they were brothers. Coughlan told Broughton that during the motor attack that left Broughton wounded, Coughlan’s sergeant passed away, but not before shielding Coughlan with his body, thus saving Coughlan’s life. Donating his kidney to a fellow soldier was his way of paying it forward. In May of 2016, Coughlan flew up from Florida for the transplant. “It immediately took and I’ve had no issues,” says Broughton, who couldn’t be more thankful for Coughlan’s selflessness. “He saved my life and provided me with the ability to see my kids grow up.” His girls, Abigail and Sophia, are now 17 and 13 respectively. During his time in the military, he received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star Medal, a high-level honor given for outstanding leadership.
Though Broughton will forever appreciate the brotherhood of the military, he admits that it was difficult trying to be a father and a husband while also having to go to war. “I had to come home to my daughters and wife and be kind and attentive to their needs, then a week later go into a war zone and make split-second decisions that could cost somebody their life,” Broughton says. “It’s almost like I had to be two people.” Serving in a war undoubtedly affects anyone, and often soldiers feel like they have to stuff down their emotions despite struggling on the inside. “For me personally, I’ve lost just as many soldier friends to suicide as I have to combat,” Broughton says. “It’s been seven years I’ve been out of the military, and friends are still taking their lives.” He describes the infantry as a proud division whose members are often reluctant to seek help. “It was frowned upon to ask for help years ago, but people are now realizing this is a huge problem,” Broughton says. “It took me getting blown through a wall and fracturing my pelvis to admit that I have some issues I needed to talk about. It shouldn’t take something catastrophic to reach out for mental health help.” As he was getting dialysis, he went back to school to earn his college degree. Now he’s a staff accountant at the Kemper CPA Group. He’s also a homebody who enjoys watching movies and spending time with family. “I’m not a fan of crowds,” Broughton says. “That was true even before COVID.” As for future plans, mostly he’s just excited to watch his kids grow up. “Kristi and I put everything we have into our daughters,” Broughton says. “That’s what matters most.”

a rainbow on your plate. The variety of colors ensures you’re getting a variety of vitamins and minerals.
Every year millions of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, many of which are to eat better, go on a diet or lose weight. There are many fad diets that circulate, but many are usually abandoned come February. Instead, I recommend focusing on small things you can change in your everyday life to eat better and feel better year round.
TRY A PROTEIN-PACKED DIET.
SUBSTITUTE EVERYDAY ITEMS WITH HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES.
INDULGE IN MODERATION.
There are a wide variety of healthy alternatives for your favorite foods that are not nutrient dense. Look for fat-free, low-fat and low-sodium options for your favorite foods. Keeping an eye on the amount of saturated fats, sodium, cholesterol and added sugars is a good way to be intentional with your eating habits.
There are many lesser-known protein sources out there than just beef and chicken. Foods like seafood, eggs, soy products and nuts are all sources of protein that are easy to incorporate in the meals you already make. When cooking with meat and poultry, try baking or grilling the meat instead of serving it fried or breaded. You can still eat your favorite comfort foods, even when you’re trying to eat healthier. Any food is OK to eat in moderation, and indulging every now and then will not ruin your healthy lifestyle. Good nutrition and regular exercise will help you feel good about your health.
Your diet is an important part of your everyday health, but it’s only a piece of the bigger picture. The Avon Chamber of Commerce is excited for 2022. As our membership continues to grow, the chamber strives to grow and provide more in member benefits to help strengthen the business community. One thing we have learned from COVID is that the Avon community takes care of one another. The Avon Chamber is proud to be
a part of a community in which the Avon School Community Corporation, the Town of Avon, Avon-Washington Township Public Library and Washington Township all work collaboratively through good and bad times to make this a wonderful community to live in. We are excited for all the programs and events that we have in place for 2022. We have rolled out two new programs for our chamber members. We have joined forces with
Hendricks Regional Health and UnitedHealthcare to provide a significantly lower-cost health insurance program for our members and their employees. Secondly, we joined forces with Lincoln Financial to provide a 401(k) program for our members and their employees. This program lowers the cost of putting a 401(k) plan in place by using a third-party fiduciary. Thirdly, the Avon Chamber has joined with the other

completed in 2021 projects continued growth:
In an era when most school districts in Indiana are managing decreased enrollment, administrators at Avon Schools are taking action to plan for and remain ahead of steady growth.
• District enrollment has grown by 1,900 students since 2011 and is projected to grow by approximately 2,000 students in the next decade. • Enrollment at Avon High School is projected to eclipse 4,000 in the 20282029 school year. • The Town of Avon and Washington Township are growing rapidly, attracting businesses and industries, and planning multiple residential developments.
“Our vision states that we are a nationally recognized district of choice that embraces all students, and prepares them to grow and thrive for their future,” says Superintendent Scott Wyndham. “To achieve this vision, we need to create more space for additional students.” Student enrollment in Avon Schools is surging and a demographic study
District administrators have been planning to provide additional space in which to welcome more students and prepare them for the future.

This is where enrollment growth has been felt most profoundly. Every usable space has been pressed into service to accommodate the school’s 3,400 students. In preparation for enrollment growth, the Avon Board of School Trustees has approved the design of significant expansion and renovation. While still in the design phase, this project is expected to provide approximately 40 additional classrooms, improve traffic flow inside and around the school, update structures and systems (many of which are approaching 25 years old), and renovate performing arts and athletics facilities to provide high-quality experiences for even more students. Design is underway. Once construction is approved, leaders project a completion time in summer or fall of 2024.
MIDDLE SCHOOL NORTH AND SOUTH
These schools do not require more square footage to accommodate current enrollment. District leaders are watching growth trends closely to determine when these schools will require additional space.
INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL EAST AND WEST
Enrollment has grown rapidly at Avon Intermediate School East and West, and portable classrooms are providing temporary relief. The Avon Board of School Trustees has approved the addition of approximately six classrooms to each school by the start of the 2024-2025 school year.
E L E M E N TA RY SCHOOLS
In recent years enrollment at Avon’s elementary schools has become significantly imbalanced. District boundaries were redrawn in early 2021, and building expansions at Hickory, Maple and Sycamore elementary schools were completed in July. Making smaller elementary schools larger has helped delay the need to build

an additional elementary school. This year enrollment is more balanced, meaning all elementary students have equal access to the same enriching curriculum, staff support, and experiences in areas like science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The Avon Board of School Trustees has approved an addition to Pine Tree Elementary (the smallest elementary school) that will be similar in size and scope to the Hickory and Sycamore additions. This project is scheduled for completion in time for the 2023-2024 school year.

education services to students beginning at age 3. White Oak Early Learning Center opened in July to support our youngest learners. It now houses all preschool programs under the same roof, freeing up classrooms in our six other elementary schools. White Oak opened with strong enrollment numbers and a waiting list. As renovation nears completion, there will be room to welcome additional students in coming years.
TAX AND REFERENDUM IMPACT All recent, current and upcoming projects result in a $0 increase to taxpayers, and use $0 in referendum funds. Avon Schools can finance these projects as existing debt is retired. Funds from the 2018 referendum are restricted to increasing teacher pay, improving class sizes and providing additional support for students. The referendum rate has decreased each year.
Avon is growing and changing rapidly. We are embracing the challenges and opportunities for growth so all our students can continue to belong, learn and grow.
INVESTING IN EDUC ATORS
The presence of highly effective teachers is the crucial factor in student learning outcomes. The most effective teachers also require high-quality learning environments in which to educate an increasing number of students. Through job-embedded professional development, collaboration and learning environments, Avon is providing educators with opportunities to excel.

The Hearing Review reports that the average person is aware they have a hearing impairment for up to 12 years before seeking treatment. This is due in part to the stigma associated with hearing loss. “Unfortunately, hearing loss gets associated with the aging process and that stigma results in considerable delays in treatment,” says Shannon L. Austin, Doctor of Audiology and
owner of SLA Audiology. “This is frustrating for those of us who know the life-changing effects of current technology combined with professional guidance. Many times patients are concerned that others will notice a hearing aid, but when you’re not engaging in conversation, that’s very noticeable too.” According to Austin, hearing loss is the third most chronic health condition in the U.S. behind heart disease and arthritis. In addition, hearing loss can mimic cognitive decline. “Studies show that listening under difficult conditions requires increased cognitive resources in order to communicate,” says Austin, who has 18-plus years of audiology experience. “This extra cognitive effort can take away from resources that could be devoted to other activities. Difficulty hearing can also result in social isolation and loneliness, which have other negative health consequences.” SLA Audiology, a local, independently owned company, offers a broad scope of audiology services - not just hearing aids. This includes tinnitus evaluations, ear wax management, assistive listening devices, and communication and functional needs assessments. Austin also works with those in law enforcement, military and construction, as well as anyone else who is regularly exposed to loud noises such as hunters and musicians. “We want to be their resource for providing the hearing protection they need to prevent hearing loss,” Austin says. If a patient’s hearing concerns require an

ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist, those referrals will be made. Austin has an extensive background in medical audiology, having spent 15 years of her career working closely with ENTs. ENTs are physicians who deal with the surgical and medical management of conditions of the head and neck. Audiologists, who are now required to have a doctor of audiology degree, are responsible for the non-medical management of hearing and balance disorders. SLA Audiology is open five days per week with early morning and evening appointments available. “A good number of our patients or their caregivers are still working, so the extended hours allow them to come without taking time off from work,” Austin says. “We also offer virtual appointments.” If a patient has devices that were purchased elsewhere that need to be reprogrammed, or would like further guidance on how to use them, they are welcome to schedule an appointment with Austin at SLA Audiology where she follows best-practice guidelines when it comes to fitting protocols. “We’re glad to develop a treatment plan regardless of where devices were purchased,” Austin says. If you or someone you love is struggling to hear, reach out to SLA Audiology for a consultation. “Successful outcomes are far greater the sooner the loss is treated, and can result in a significant improvement in overall quality of life,” Austin says.
