INDIANA CANINE ASSISTANT NETWORK AIMS TO UNLEASH HOPE Writer / Heather Chastain . Photographer / Liz Kaye
At Community Chiropractic in Hendricks County, hope is being unleashed, as well as chiropractic care. Community Chiropractic’s owner, Dr. Vicki Dr. Vicki, is working with an Indiana Canine Assistant Network (ICAN) dog at her business. ICAN believes dogs can be catalysts for positive change in people’s lives. By building partnerships through the training and placement of assistance dogs, ICAN creates opportunities for at-risk youth, adults and people with disabilities. Dr. Vicki has been a volunteer with ICAN for three years helping to train assistance dogs for placement. “These dogs inherently know how to deal with my patients,” Dr. Vicki says. “They just seem to know what they need. They can sense if a person is in physical or emotional pain. Sometimes the dog will just go up and lay their head in the patient’s lap. It’s wonderful. They are just doing their job.” ICAN’s Furlough Program places dogs with volunteers outside the training facilities and gives them real-world experience for three weeks. The dogs range in age from puppies to 2½ years old. “The dogs go everywhere with us,” Dr. Vicki says. “The state fair, my niece’s soccer games, church, the grocery story … anywhere the dog will

respond well. But at night, when the vest comes off, they just get to be a dog.”
they know what to expect.”
Dr. Vicki integrates the dogs into her family, allowing her daughters, 8 and 5, to play with them when they are not training.
Once the furlough program is over, Dr. Vicki and her girls get to see the dogs one last time, which happens at ICAN’s twicea-year graduation ceremonies.
“My girls have played dress up with our dogs before,” Dr. Vicki laughs.
“We really enjoy getting to see who our dogs were paired with,” she says.
The most important part of training the dogs is teaching them good manners.
ICAN Executive Director Jillian Miller has been with ICAN since its inception in 2002. She said she still gets emotional when a dog graduates and is paired with a family.
“They have to know how to follow our cues and commands,” she says. “We also (as trainers) have to know how to react and redirect as necessary. One time, at Dick’s Sporting Goods, I walked with the dog by a mannequin twice. The third time, she barked at it. She barked at the grey lady in a track suit. No idea why that third time was the time the dog decided she wasn’t okay with the mannequin, but I had to calm her and redirect her away from the situation.” Part of teaching a dog good manners includes not allowing them to rush up and greet someone or to sniff them. Dr. Vicki says it can also be difficult for her patients to understand they can’t rush up to the dog. “It’s all part of the training process. You have to understand proper training etiquette,” Dr. Vicki explains. “You can’t touch a working dog without permission. You can look, but don’t touch. The dog is working. You may not know what the dog is training for, especially if you don’t see a person in a wheelchair. We train dogs to help those with PTSD, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, diabetic emergencies and other things that don’t necessarily have a wheelchair or other physical component.” In the past three years, Dr. Vicki estimates she has furloughed 15 to 17 dogs. The dogs are typically Labrador retrievers, lab mixes and golden retrievers. Dr. Vicki says it’s been a wonderful experience, and it’s one her daughters enjoy as well. “They are always looking forward to the new dog, so they are never too sad when we have to say goodbye,” she says. “We do prepare them. We have a countdown so
“It’s a beautiful and amazing opportunity,” she says. “To see someone who has waited two to three years to be placed with their dog … it’s my favorite part.” In the past six years, more than 150 dogs have graduated from ICAN. Unfortunately, not all dogs graduate. “Not all dogs are meant to be assistant dogs,” Dr. Vicki says. “One of our former dogs, Patsy, is now in Arizona with her family. She started to show early signs of hip dysplasia and was unable to graduate the program.” ICAN is the only accredited service dog training program in Indiana. The pups are currently trained at the Indianapolis Woman’s Prison, Pendleton Correctional Facility and the Correctional Industrial Facility, where specially selected offender/handlers are responsible for their care and training. The intensive training takes about two years, Miller says, and by the time training is over a dog will know 80 to 90 different cues. Miller said it costs $26,000 to raise one dog and give lifetime support to ICAN’s clients. ICAN relies on public donations, corporate sponsors and grants to fund their program. You can donate to ICAN by visiting its website www.icandog.org.

Nestled off U.S. 36, in a cozy Avon Business Center park, you’ll find a salon known for warmth, welcome and comfort. An Avon staple for 15 years, Cass & Company Salon, takes their community commitment seriously. “We want to be the best part of our client’s day,” said owner Angi Snodgrass. “We are constantly working with our technicians. We want to educate, mentor and help them succeed,” said Snodgrass. Education is key. Snodgrass regularly hosts industry professionals as well as attends educational events with her team to better themselves in customer service, technique and personal development. “We want to build relationships with our clients. And we’ve been very lucky to have so many loyal customers and employees,” said Snodgrass.
Several employees have been with Snodgrass for as long as 15 years. Known not only for their quality creative hair services for men and women, other services include massage, Aveda make-up application, and Aveda facials began in January. Their loft area serves as a private area for bridal parties to get their make-up applied while enjoying beverages and a light breakfast. “I’m still an active owner. I’m still behind the chair. That helps keep me in the loop with what customers need from the salon and what my technicians need,” said Snodgrass. “I value their opinions and feedback.” Snodgrass said supporting a team environment has been instrumental to AvonMagazine.com / FEBRUARY 2017 / AVON MAGAZINE / 11
Cass & Company’s ability to provide quality creative services. “You can feel the team atmosphere when you walk in the door. From the front desk team, to our assistant program and our technicians. We all work together, praise each other and support each other.” The salon also works closely with Sheltering Wings. Once a month, a woman of Sheltering Wing’s choosing, is sent over for a make-over day. “We want to do something to make them feel better. Give them a little more confidence and make them feel good about themselves,” said Snodgrass. The salon is located at 7374 Business Center Drive, behind Sherwin Williams, across from All American Grooming. Book your appointment by calling 317-272-3770.
FAMILY PROMISE OF HENDRICKS COUNTY
OFFERING HELP, HOPE, AND HOUSING TO THE HOMELESS

organizations to assist families with basic necessities for up to 90 days.
Lisa, a working mother and full-time college student, was involved in a serious car accident last year. This set into motion a domino effect of bad fortune. Unable to drive, she couldn’t get to work. Not working meant no income, so she couldn’t pay rent. She and her two daughters eventually found themselves living on the streets.
On average, the wait list is approximately 12 families, though as many as 27 have been on the list at any particular time. Open since March 2015, Family Promise has assisted 22 families.
Desperate to turn things around, Lisa connected with Family Promise of Hendricks County, whose mission is to help homeless individuals overcome barriers that keep them from obtaining employment and, by extension, permanent housing. According to Stacy Schilling, director of the program, some of those barriers include lack of childcare, limited transportation options, and poor credit. Family Promise of Hendricks County, located north of the Avon Washington Township Library on Ind. 267, partners with local
“Homelessness in Avon is very much a hidden population,” says Schilling. “But if you look for it, you’ll often find it.” In fact, over 200 school-aged children in Hendricks County are currently homeless. Schilling acknowledges that families can be reluctant to seek help due to shame or fear. In these cases, they will stay with friends, sleep in their car, or bunk outdoors, weather permitting. The problem is, such methods cannot be sustained indefinitely. Family Promise of Hendricks County currently partners with 22 organizations. Some of those arrange for temporary housing and others provide meals and other services.

“It’s a hodgepodge of set-ups, but it all comes together,” Schilling says. The Family Promise model relies on its partnerships with churches, clubs, medical facilities, school systems, and police departments. Hendricks Regional Health, in particular, has acted as a host site and has sponsored many of the program’s events. “This community is so giving,” says Schilling. “We’ve found that if people can lend a hand, they often do.” For example, high school students have pitched in to landscape and decorate the resource center, barbers have cut hair at no charge, photographers have provided free Mother’s Day photo packages, and community members have answered phones, donated meals, and arranged transportation for those needing rides to and from job interviews. Family Promise also partners with Woodforest National Bank, whose branch manager teaches weekly budgeting skills and financial literacy classes. “We don’t focus on past debt, broken credit, or evictions, but we do help our families process what happened to get them to this place,” says Schilling. “We do this because there’s a fragile chain of command where if one thing breaks, they’re back to being homeless.” When the facility opened in the spring, Schilling says there were questions about how to best communicate with those needing assistance. “You can’t teach someone how to swim when they’re drowning,” says Schilling. “When families are in crisis, throwing everything at them at once only serves to overwhelm them.” Every 30 days, a case worker re-evaluates a family’s progress to assess what they’ve accomplished and to help outline plans for the future. “Setting goals and improving accountability empowers families,” Schilling says. Ultimately, Lisa found permanent housing and landed a job and she recently graduated from college. “Last week she stopped by the office and was absolutely glowing,” says Schilling. “She persevered, and that’s why we’re here.” For more information about Family Promise of Hendricks County, call (317) 296-3742 or visit its website at familypromisehendrickscounty.org/. S ONSHINE FAMILY D ENTAL Is excited to announce that we are now a provider for the CIGNA dental network. We believe that this collaboration with CIGNA will give our patients the best usage of their insurance benefits. Recently, Dr. Driggers wrote an article discussing the pros and cons of PPO network dentistry. Unlike the vast majority of PPO networks, CIGNA’s generous reimbursement for services allows us to give our patients the standard of care we strive for and to which our patients have become accustomed. We are excited to offer this option to our existing patients as well as new patients we will see as they choose Sonshine Family Dental from their list of dental providers. It gives us great satisfaction to be able to provide quality care without the potential ethical dilemma that low reimbursement rates can sometimes cause, all while maintaining the integrity of standards we have set for our practice. We look forward to seeing you soon at Sonshine Family Dental!

MR. INDIANA BASKETBALL LEADS POPULAR TEAM OF PACER GAME USHERS Writer / Matt Keating
Humes, an usher at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, is a popular presence at Indiana Pacer games. Fans love to chat with him. He’s well liked by his co-workers. Many Pacers players, Pacemates, vendors, and Pacers’ front-office personnel often stop to shake his hand, admire his rings, or listen to him tell a story. And Humes loves every minute of it. The Madison High School basketball legend, named Indiana’s Mr. Basketball in 1962 after taking Madison High School to the state
Final Four, knows how to work a crowd. He is one of a fleet of popular ushers who work Pacers games. “To me, being an usher is not work at all,” Humes said before a recent game against the Charlotte Hornets. “I love people, and I love watching the families and friends come in to have a great time. I’ve been working here as an usher for the last six years, and it’s been constant source of enjoyment for me.” When Humes was a player at Madison High School, he had 95 wins and one loss in regular-season games. He later went on to play for

the University of Evansville, where his team won NCAA College Division national championships in 1964 and 1965. He was also voted All-American. In 1991, he was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. “After college, I went on to get drafted by The Chicago Bulls, but I was the last player cut,” Humes said. “I later signed with the Indiana Pacers, but I was cut before the season began. I was hurt at first, but I wound up being all right with it later. I started teaching and coaching. I jumped right into it and have loved doing both.” He earned a master’s degree in counseling from Butler University.
“I coached at Howe High School and Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, and at the University of Indianapolis, and back at my old college, the University of Evansville,” Humes said. “After that, I also coached at Crispus Attucks High School. It was a great pleasure. I have coached for 42 years.” Humes added that his love for basketball and interacting with people in a positive way has never wavered. “Watching basketball is about as fun as it gets,” he stated. “I also like helping people here get to their seats, and help have a good time.

“THE TWO MAIN THINGS I LOVE ABOUT THIS JOB ARE THE PEOPLE AND THE EVENTS.” I'm always glad to see the other ushers doing the same thing, and I like catching up with them. Some of them have been here for a long time.” Peggy Surbey is one of them. She has been an usher since 1997. “The two main things I love about this job are the people and the events,” Surbey said. “I have been a long-time Pacers fan, and it’s great being able to go to the games for free. I like welcoming people and bring a positive part of their experience. It puts a smile on my face. I like discussing the games and the players. It’s a great place to be.” Lorris Brown, one of the ushers’ co-supervisors, said he has been an usher for 30 years. TownePost.com / FEBRUARY 2017 / INDY METRO
“I’ve been able to meet such a wide range of people,” Brown stated. “I worked at Market Square Arena, and it was a great place to gather and really get to know the players and fans. It was a real family atmosphere. It's the same here.” Dave Slipher, who worked as a teacher for 38 years, has worked as an usher since the 1960s. “I remember the night Bobby ‘Slick’ Leonard was named as head coach of the Pacers in the late ‘60s,” Slipher noted. “I have loved watching all the great coaches and players come and go through the years.”

Love is… Adoption WILL AND ADRIENNE PFAFFENBERGER’S PATH TO PARENTHOOD Writer / Kara Kavensky
Avon residents Will and Adrienne Pfaffenberger began their journey into parenthood through the traditional route and then weighed fertility options, eventually deciding on adoption as their best course of action to become parents.
“We thought it would be funny on the air to promote the Midwest fertility clinic and do a test on air,” says Will of his and Dave Smiley’s experiment. “The results came back that I was half of the problem and didn't know it.”
Both Will and Adrienne Pfaffenberger are Avon High School graduates. Adrienne is a pediatric physical therapist and Will has been part of the Smiley Morning Show on WZPL for the past six years. Both are outgoing people and, given Will’s public persona on the radio each weekday morning, being open about their fertility adventures seemed natural. Not that they had much of a choice.
Will continues sarcastically, “Luckily, I got to share my results live on air.” “We decided to be publicly open about our experience, as a lot of people go through similar issues,” says Adrienne, who started a blog documenting their journey.
INDY METRO / FEBRUARY 2017 / TownePost.com
The Pfaffenberger’s not only chose to adopt locally, but opted for an open adoption. Their process took two years. Their son Lincoln was born in 2015 and is now 17 months old.
“Fertility treatment is not a sure thing,” shares Will. “Considering the physical challenges versus the emotional ones, we opted for adoption.”
“The result is amazing,” says Adrienne. “The process of open adoption can present challenges, but we are blessed to have a wonderful relationship with the birth mother.”
“It wasn’t that important to me to personally experience pregnancy,” shares Adrienne. “I just wanted to be a mom.”
During the exploration of the potential rabbit hole of the fertility process, Adrienne and Will carefully weighed their options.
Toni Williams, fellow Smiley Morning show host, was the first of the show’s foursome to have a child and the rest of the morning crew would tease her about her adventures. Now that Dave and Will are dads, only Nikki Reed remains without children.
“When Will and Dave became dads, I was like ‘Ha! It’s not so funny now, is it?’” jokes Toni, whose son Lucas is a personality on their show thanks to Toni’s recordings of him. “It will be a sad day when we have to fire Lucas,” jokes Will. “Noah, Smiley’s son, is up and coming. Noah is now 2 and very verbal.” The Smiley Morning Show has been ranked number one all but one month over the past year. “With the show, we create a product that people engage with. We don’t spend a lot of time prepping, but we all come to the table with our own strengths and we know how to make something out of nothing,” notes Will. “We are fortunate to be supported by management that supports our creativity and allows us to be autonomous.” Will and Adrienne have been married for 10 years. Both are creative. In addition to being a physical therapist, Adrienne is also a professional photographer. Adrienne received her undergraduate degree from Ball State and earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Indianapolis. Will graduated from DePauw with degrees in communications, media, and theater, and even had an internship with The Bob and Tom Show. Tom Griswold paid Will directly to be an introductory producer. “It was a great experience. I got to work with their national guest booking agent, I wrote bits, went to writer’s meetings, and got to do characters,” shares Will, who is mainly known for the Joe Johnson memory bit. “I am grateful for that experience, as I was given the opportunity to be creative beyond an internship.”
Are you 65 or older and worried about your memory?
Will’s creativity is mainly expressed through comedy. He studied improv in Chicago, founded "Three Dollar Bill Comedy”, which wrote several shows for The Indy Fringe Festival. Will’s other passion is soccer, and his second fulltime job is that of Soccer Director at United Soccer Alliance of Indiana, one of the largest youth soccer clubs in the state.

Writer & Photographer / Stephanie Duncan
If someone was interested in starting a new rewarding hobby, Anita Johnson could probably convince him or her to try home brewing with one visit to Great Fermentations. With a passion for craft beer, home brewing and teaching people new skills, Johnson, Great Fermentation’s owner, is one of the lucky people who gets to do her hobby as a job. Great Fermentations is a local business that since 1995 has sold beer and
winemaking supplies and offered home brewing classes in Indianapolis. Originally opening in Broad Ripple, Great Fermentations opened its second location this year in Avon. It offers a large selection of ingredients and equipment for home brewing for beginners and advanced brewers. Johnson has been running Great Fermentations since its beginning and is still just as passionate about home brewing as she was when she was first introduced to it by a friend 20 years ago. Johnson convinced her friend to teach her how to brew her own beer. All it took was for her to cook him a meal of his choice, mac and cheese (out of a box) and fish sticks. The moment she brewed her first beer, she was hooked. With a new hobby taking a lot of her attention and a similar local store going out of business, Johnson seized the opportunity to pursue her new passion. She quit her full-time job and opened a storefront. At a time when the home brewing trend hadn’t really taken off, Johnson really had to work to educate people about this unique hobby. “It wasn’t mainstream, and people would ask about the legality all the time,” she explained. “I had to stick at it, and eventually it became more popular and accepted.”
she also gets to work with her son, Bryan who is handling daily operations. “I am able to share this business with him now, and it showed that he appreciated what I was doing here,” she explained. “Most businesses close in five years, so to be in a niche business for 20 years, it’s an accomplishment!” After 20 years, Anita has gained a wealth of knowledge on the home brewing hobby and emphasizes that brewing beer and wine is easier than it sounds. “Brewing beer is just like cooking but with the added step of sanitation,” she explains. Along with everyday operations, Johnson and her staff also brew their own beers, often entering them in brewing competitions. One of her first awards was for her cider and mead combo, Two Wrongs Make A Right. The name gives it away. “I had made a cider that was too sweet and a mead that was too dry, so I combined them, and it won a silver medal at a competition,” she said. Trial and error is something that everyone experiences in home brewing. While Johnson has had many successes, failure while learning is also a part of the process.
“I have had my fair share of bad beer,” she laughed. “I had one that turned out to Johnson feels really lucky to go to work taste like a green Jolly Rancher.” every day. She not only has great staff, but Her current favorite beer to brew is Little 26 / AVON MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com

Big Guy, a Session IPA kit currently on sale at Great Fermentations. “Half the alcohol, all the IBUs,” she joked. Johnson also likes to make custom beers for friends and family. After recently battling breast cancer, she made a custom
beer for her doctor who helped her. Great Fermentations also provides a wide variety of classes aimed at introducing new customers to the fun of home brewing, and they hold fun events to bring the home brewing community together.
“From 55-year-old plumbers or young millennials, Great Fermentations has developed a unique community of people who love this hobby,” Johnson said. For more information, visit Great Fermentations in Avon at 7900 E. US 36 or online at GreatFermentations.com.

CARDIAC STENTS THAT DISSOLVE IU HEALTH WEST CARDIOLOGIST EXPLAINS NEW TECHNOLOGY THAT THE BODY CAN ABSORB Each year, more than half a million Americans undergo a procedure to place cardiac stents - small, metal mesh tubes used to prop open and de-clog arteries. Metal stents have become the gold standard over the years, but a new kind of cardiac stent recently approved by the FDA dissolves in the body instead of staying in place indefinitely like metal stents. They’re called bio-absorbable vascular scaffolding, or biodegradable stents. “These are stents that have a scaffold, or body, made of polylactic acid that dissolves over time,” explains Ibrahim Abu Romeh, MD, a cardiologist at Indiana University Health West Hospital. Biodegradable stents are made from lactic acid, a natural byproduct of the body, which eventually washes away through the body’s hydrolysis. Through use of these stents, there’s no risk of scarring that can occur with metal stents and no metal
pieces are left behind in the arteries.
severely calcified blood vessels.
“The stents are not permanent in the body – they dissolve after the artery heals,” explains Dr. Abu Romeh.
“The new stents have not shown superiority to the stent that are currently being used in practice,” adds Dr. Abu Romeh. “More studies are needed to understand long-term benefits.”
The evolution of unclogging arteries began with balloon angioplasties in the 1980s, which inflated to push plaque out of the artery. Balloons were eventually replaced by metal stents in the 1990s, which provided much safer means for unclogging of arteries, but with the drawback of scarring.
STENT STATS Patients with cholesterol issues or with recent stress tests may be candidates for biodegradable stents. Good candidates are:
Eventually, metal stents were coated in a drug that would suppress the scarring process and inflammation, cutting the rate of stent recurrence. The new biodegradable stents are coated in the same anti-scarring drug, and without the drawback of metal buildup.
• Younger patients or those without a history of heart disease. • Preventative cases – not those having active heart attacks. • Patients with minor blockage, not severely calcified blood vessels. • Not patients with smaller blood vessels or blood thinning issues.
But there will always be a need for metal stents, particularly among patients with

ARE YOU FROM AVON? WHERE DID YOU WORK BEFORE THIS? I have lived in Avon since graduating from college. I have been an entrepreneur since 1988 in various forms of business. I was first involved in the Subway franchise business as a multi-unit owner, then was the owner of the Avon Amoco (now BP in Avon). My business partner (Charlie Rodgers) and I continued in the commercial/retail development business with locations in Avon, Columbus and Greencastle. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? The nice thing about my day is that it is always different. I love what I do and the people that I do it with. Having been in the community for 30 years, you get to know people and being able to work with them on a daily basis is very rewarding. TELL ME ABOUT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR CAREER. I am very proud of the fact that I have been fortunate to grow along with the Town of Avon, first as a developer and second as a support organization with the Avon Chamber of Commerce. Avon is growing into a fantastic place to live and raise a family.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I am from Indianapolis. I was raised on the west side and went to Ben Davis High School. I attended Indiana Central University (University of Indianapolis) and received my Bachelor’s Degree. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH THE AVON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE? I have been a member of the Avon Chamber of Commerce since its inception in 1997. I have been the Executive Director since January 2000. WHAT LED YOU TO THIS POSITION? Being a business owner in the community, I wanted to be a part of growing an organization that would help our community grow and thrive.
WHAT IS YOUR MAIN GOAL FOR THE FUTURE? One of my main goals in the near future as the Avon Chamber director is to help the Town of Avon grow its economic development. There is plenty of room to continue to pursue the type of development that helps broaden our tax base and provide tremendous business opportunity for our residents. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FAMILY, AGES, ETC. I am very blessed to have two wonderful children. My son, Alex, is 19 and in his first year at Manchester University, and my beautiful daughter, Abby, is in her senior year at Cardinal Ritter High School. WHAT ARE SOME HOBBIES OF YOURS? NEW COMIC CON MINISERIES FEATURES LOCAL ACTOR
Writer / Matt Keating
Indianapolis Native Vincent Ventresca, a 1984 Chatard High School graduate, has a role in a new web miniseries called “Kings of Con.” Vestresca plays Officer Billings in the series, which is billed as a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes shenanigans at fan conventions. “Kings of Con” has been heavily promoted by Comic Con HQ and has received high praise from television critics. “It’s the first new scripted series on the Comic Con streaming service,” Ventresca said. “It's already received a lot of attention. It’s very exciting. There are so many networks, channels and streaming services to choose from these days. It opens things wide up. It's creatively exploding.” Ventresca, who was born in Indianapolis, is the youngest of 11
children and grew up in the Broad Ripple area. He graduated from Indiana University with a double major in theater and psychology. Ventresca still has family members in Indianapolis but currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Dianne, an eighth-grade teacher, and his children, Benjamin and Renee. “It's really fun being a parent,” Ventresca said. “I love spending time with my family and getting involved in my son’s year-round soccer.” He also loves acting and writing. On the acting front, Ventresca starred as Darian Fawkes on the Sci-Fi Network’s “The Invisible Man,” a popular series that still has a strong following today. “I had an excellent time on that series,” he said. “It was work, but also very collaborative and a lot of fun. It can be a tough business, but you never know what will happen.” James Roday, star of the long-running USA comedy-mystery series
TownePost.com / FEBRUARY 2017 / INDY METRO
“Psych,” told Ventresca he was ready to give up acting and screen writing and move back home to Texas, when he landed the lead role in “Psych,” which lasted eight seasons. “I love the excitement of knowing you just have to hang in there and work toward what you want to do,” Ventresca said. “You may have to wait, but it’s worth the hard work and auditions.” Ventresca is still recognized for his role as Fun Bobby, who dated Courtney Cox’s Monica Geller, on the long-running hit series “Friends.” He also was a regular on ABC’s “Complete Savages” and the NBC sitcom “Boston Common.” Over the last several years, Ventresca has built up a remarkable resume. He guest starred recently on the television series “Rizoli & Isles,” “Nashville,” and “Wicked City.” He has also guest starred on “CSI,” “CSI: New York,” “Psych,” “Monk,” “Nikita,” “Hot in Cleveland,” “The Mentalist,” “Without a Trace,” “In Plain Sight,” “CSI: Miami,” “Las Vegas,” “Cold Case,” “Diagnosis Murder,” “Empty Nest,” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” He has also been in several movies, including “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “The Thin Pink Line,” “Can’t Stop Dancing,” “The Learning Curve,” “Purgatory Flats,” “Madison,” “Answers to Nothing,” and ”Break Point.” He is in another film, “Tao of Surfing,” which is in post production. “I've been lucky to work as an actor, and I also love to write,” Ventresca said. “I’ve read so many scripts that it made me want to try to figure out how to tell a story.” Ventresca wrote a script for a television pilot called “Adults,” which he says is a “coming of middle age” story. He had a reading of the script with several friends, including Nathan Fillion, star of the ABC television series, “Castle,” which ran for eight seasons on ABC. “We moved the chairs around the house and had a big table reading of the script,” Ventresca said. “It went very well. I was able to get a lot of great feedback. There is an audience out there for stories about middle age people and their struggles and positive experiences.” In 2009, Ventresca shot a pilot, “Stuck,” that he co-wrote, coproduced, and co-starred in with Eric Palladino. Maura Tierney, Eric McCormick and Dean Cain were also in it. He enjoyed the writing experience so much he is also working on other scripts. “One of the things I love about writing is the freedom,” Ventresca said. “It’s just you. There is no one telling you what to do. You aren't being directed. Acting is a lot of fun and very rewarding, but
writing is also creatively exciting. I also like the power of not asking for permission that writing allows, and acting doesn’t. “With acting, you have to ask for permission by auditioning. And then you get the part or you don't. With writing, you can just wake up and do it. It’s just you.” Ventresca noted that people are sometimes critical of actors becoming writers. “A writer I love, Thomas Merton, talked a lot about how you have to realize what you want to say with your life. It’s the realization that you may write something that no one will ever see, but you still have to write it. It actually frees you up to write what you want to. You have to forget the results and just do it.” Merton believed writers use their imaginations as God’s way of talking to us. Merton was an American Catholic writer and mystic. A Trappist monk of the Abbey of Gethsemani, Kentucky, he was a poet, social activist, and student of comparative religion. “As I’ve grown older, I’ve been paying more attention to not worrying about the end result, and just write,” Ventresca said. “I think the death of my mother and my upbringing in Catholic schools has helped me contemplate more about what is important. I get very busy with family, auditions, and writing, but it's important to find quiet time to work on things you are passionate about.”

AVON 200 SCULPTURE ARTIST RANDALL FLAKE Sculptor, Randy Flake standing next to his finished Avon 200 sculpture.
Writer / Heather Chastain
A man with a passion to mold steel has crafted a permanent legacy for the Town of Avon. Randy Flake, a heavy mechanic, designed and built the 200 sculpture at Town Hall. The sculpture celebrates Avon’s 20-year anniversary and Indiana’s 200-year anniversary. “This is just a hobby I’ve taken to the extreme,” said Flake. “I just have a need to create. I’ve been doing it all my life. I like taking an idea, using my creativity and then
raw materials and making something. I enjoy the challenge of trying to make steel move in a direction it doesn’t care to go.” The Town of Avon commissioned Flake to create the sculpture. “I did a show with Hendricks County Arts Council in 2010 and showed off some of my work, but nothing came of it until they referred Tom Klein (Avon Town Manager) to me about doing this project,” he explained. “The only parameters the town gave me were to make it 10 feet tall and have 42 / AVON MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com
the number 200 in it. That’s it. They left the rest up to my creativity.” So he got to work, sketching what he envisioned. Flake doesn’t use a computer or CAD software. “After I submitted my very rough sketch to the town council, they came back with a few tweaks and then basically said, ‘Okay, if you think you can do this, let’s do it.’” It took him about three months to complete the heavy gauge plate sculpture.
“I was really happy with the outcome,” he said. “I always strive to give people something they will enjoy, and I try to give the client more than they ask for.” Klein said Flake did a great job of taking the vision and making it a reality. “The sculpture has become an iconic part of the park, and many families and community leaders have had their picture taken at the sculpture,” Klein said. “The Bicentennial Torch Relay stopped at the sculpture, too.” The sculpture is 10 feet high by 15 feet wide and weighs about three tons. It takes a lot of machinery to mold steel, but Flake is able to do the arch welding, plasma and torch cutting in his garage. He credits his family for making it possible for him to create his art. “I have a very understanding wife, but it was my sister-in-law, Sandy Mood, who has basically become my art manager,” he explained. “Sandy said to me, when she first saw my stuff, ‘You have to be seen and discovered.’” Some of his first pieces were a life-sized eagle (estimated to have taken 750 hours), a fish (3,000 hours) and a scarecrow, as well as a menagerie of other animals. He also crafted a new bed frame for he and his wife. “It’s a slow, tedious process and it’s a fairly expensive labor of love,” he said. A community artist from Baltimore, Maryland, with roots in Danville, recently created a mural across from Danville’s courthouse that included Flake’s sculpture and name. The attention the sculpture has gotten Flake hasn’t been easy for him. “I’m just a low-profile guy out here doing my thing,” he said. A former underwater welder and commercial diver, Flake earned his degree in underwater construction from Highline Community College in Seattle Washington. He has worked as a pipeline mechanic for Marathon Petroleum Corporation for 29 years. AvonMagazine.com / FEBRUARY 2017 / AVON MAGAZINE / 43
