Membership allows you to visit Posts worldwide.
The Avon American Legion is leading and loving its community and members. In fact, the general public is welcome to visit the building and attend events the Legion hosts any time. Members also encourage those interested to join the Legion through small yearly dues - between $25 and $45 depending on level of eligibility.
In the wake of COVID, the American Legion has seen a tremendous increase in facility rentals. Commander Mike Welsh says the building was almost booked solid throughout the summer. Once things began to open back up, people started utilizing the Legion for graduation parties, proms, weddings and many types of receptions.
Membership benefits include, but are not limited to, the ability to purchase alcohol for yourself or your guests. If you rent out the Legion facility, you get a sizable discount.
In addition to its rental hall, the Legion also supports organizations like the Avon Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club and Boy Scout Troop 123. The Avon TownePost.com / AUGUST 2021 / AVON MAGAZINE / 7
American Legion is home to the Westside Sea Cadets, which is a program for young men and women aged 10 to 18 who have a desire to be part of the U.S. Navy at some point in their future. COVID has created struggles for everyone, including the Avon American Legion. “We suffered like every other organization,” Welsh says. “We were closed for eight weeks.” The mission of the American Legion is to support veterans and military personnel still serving.
“Our biggest charity contributions are money, supplies, and meeting the many needs of homeless veterans in Indianapolis,” Welsh says. The American Legion offers lunches at reasonable prices for veterans and other community members. Fortunately, the lunch program has been very successful. You can dine with friends and veterans Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mike Welsh has given his great gifts and his service to his family, country and military. Welsh has been a member of the Legion for 49 years. His father was commander of the Knightstown American Legion. When Welsh first moved out west, he maintained his Knightstown membership until he became fully invested in Post 145, the Avon location. Welsh has been a member of the Avon American Legion Post for 15 years. “I developed a passion for seeing this Post grow,” he says. “One of the best ways to do that was to become more involved in the community itself. In order to fulfill our mission, this place has to be run like a business.” One of the ways the commander worked to make the Post more successful was to focus on increasing membership. “The membership has more than doubled in the past five years,” Welsh says. “We now have roughly 1,300 members.” It was no easy rise to the top. Once Welsh decided he wanted to be Post commander, he threw his hat into the ring for the election. Elections happen every year. The year was 2014-2015, and Welsh lost. “I learned a lot from that loss,” the 75-year-old war veteran says. “I took a year off from the board. I ran again the following year and won. I learned you can’t just put your name in a hat. You have to explain to people why you should be commander. It takes time and effort to do that.” When asked about retirement plans, he chuckles. 8 / AVON MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2021 / TownePost.com
“That’s a very good question,” says Welsh, who is known to most of his friends by the nickname Dollar Mike, or just Dollar. “I just started my sixth year as commander. I was talking to a gentleman over a beer one day and he asked, ‘Do you consider yourself successful?’ I thought about it for a minute and then said yes. I worked hard all my life and put all of my kids through college at Indiana University Bloomington. My kids have no college debts and they are more successful than I am. Success is measured a lot of different ways. It just depends on what it means to you. My wife, my successful children and my grandchildren are my reason for living. It’s not up to anyone else to measure your success except you.” Avon Post 145 has been financially successful as well. When the branch was moved from its original location off of State Road 267, Post leaders were able to use the buyout money from the town to buy the land where they currently reside on

East Main Street. They built a pavilion that allows them to have outside events, bands and cookouts. Once the facility rental took off, members decided it was important to them to provide a quality experience, so they updated the rental tables and chairs, among other upgrades. If you are considering joining the Legion to help support their mission and see it continue to grow in the Avon community, there are a few different levels of membership. You can be a Legionnaire, a member of the Sons of the American Legion, or part of the Auxiliary. Your military service or family member’s service determines the group in which you qualify for membership.
In July of 2020, Congress passed a law stating that anyone who served in the military from December of 1941 onward was eligible to be a member of the Legion. Before 2020, only those who served during active wartime qualified. “That law helped a lot,” Welsh says. “It was an unfortunate situation and it was finally corrected.” When Welsh decides to take a break, he enjoys playing golf. He’s been a member of Prestwick Country Club for 27 years. He’s married and has three children, two stepchildren and 11 grandkids. The commander officially retired in 2014 and

began focusing solely on helping the Avon American Legion grow. He originally went to work for Danners Inc., a regional retail chain, shortly after he graduated from high school in 1964 in Spiceland, Indiana. He began his own company when he left Danners, after a 20-year stint that included becoming vice president of merchandise. Welsh Co. International was a company that supplied the American retail market with products from all parts of Asia, specifically China. This was before the growth of Walmart and other bigbox retailers. “When I first started shopping for our retailers as an agent, it was uncommon for most buyers to shop overseas, especially in China,” Welsh says. “In 1984 the retail
market turned into a global market. The purpose was to supply merchandise to the retail trade at a lower cost.” Welsh says China became more accessible in 1985 and 1986. “China began allowing more foreign agents to travel inside their country,” he says. “Before then, it was hard to get into China. and more retailers began traveling to Asia once they began to open up.” He took a leave of absence from 1967 to 1969 to join the Army. Welsh underwent basic training in Fort Ord, California, then took advanced training. “Because I had business
experience, I spent my entire time in the United States as a clerk typist,” he says. “I never deployed to Vietnam. It made my family happy. It gave me a much deeper respect for those combat soldiers with their boots on the ground.” You can learn more about the Avon American Legion Post 145 by visiting avonlegion.org. GETTING TO KNOW INDIANAPOLIS COLTS QUARTERBACK CARSON WENTZ Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by the Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Carson Wentz has heard the rumors and can confirm - he and Prince Harry are two different people despite their similar looks.
“We’re not the same person,” Wentz says with a laugh. “I hate to break it to some people, but nope.” Traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Indianapolis Colts in March of 2021, Wentz follows in the footsteps of the now-retired Phillip Rivers, who took the Colts to the playoffs in his lone year AUGUST 2021
with the team. Drafted at number two by Philadelphia in the 2016 NFL Draft, Wentz won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017, where he first played under current Colts Head Coach Frank Reich, who served as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator. Although born in Raleigh, North Carolina,
Wentz spent most of his upbringing in North Dakota - a state he still has many ties to today. “Both of my parents are there, and I have a bunch of friends and stuff back there,” Wentz says. “I grew up there, went to high school there and went to college there. North Dakota is definitely home. I love that place and love those people back there.” While Indianapolis may be completely new terrain for him and his family, Wentz at least has a familiar face here in town with Reich. “I loved playing for him as my coach and
loved working together with him as my offensive coordinator,” Wentz says. “We just really got along well off the field and really connected on a deeper level spiritually. I just thought we had a really good thing in Philly working together, so I think we were both mutually excited to get back and work together again.” While Carson, his wife Madison, and their 1-year-old daughter Hadley have been busy settling in, the Indianapolis community has made sure to welcome them with open arms. “The way we’ve been welcomed and embraced has just been really cool, both AUGUST 2021
football-wise from the organization but also in the community,” Wentz says. “It just seems like such a family-friendly environment. Everyone’s rooting for you, pulling for you and wants you to succeed.” When he’s not out on the gridiron, Wentz also stays busy with a nonprofit he started called the Audience of One (AO1) Foundation. A devout Christian, Wentz has tried to use his platform for good since entering the NFL. “When I was a rookie, I knew that my purpose was so much bigger than throwing touchdowns on Sunday,” he says. “Coming to my faith when I was in college, I knew

there was a platform that was different. Lord knows how long I’ll have that platform, so as a rookie I said, ‘Let’s start the foundation. I don’t know how many years I’ll be in this position to have a voice, have eyes on me and make a difference, so while we’ve got it, let’s make the most of it.’ ” The AO1 Foundation consists of three separate ministries according to Wentz. The first of these is called Thy Kingdom Crumb. “That goes around and gives out free food to anybody and everybody, and also talks

“It’s just been really cool to see God working through it and for us to be obedient to where he calls us to go,” says Wentz of the AO1 Foundation and its three ministries. “It’s been fun to really see lives being impacted and changed, not only on this earth but also for eternity, and that’s really where the greatest reward has been.”
The AO1 Foundation also facilitates an Outdoor Ministry, which aims to serve

love Indianapolis. “We love it out here,” he says. “It’s got that small-town feel, but it’s definitely a bigger city that has everything you need from restaurants to family activities. There are so many things to do. I think the culture around here and the community atmosphere really fits me and my family perfectly, and we’re excited about it.” As for his inner outdoorsman, Wentz says he looks forward to exploring all of the nature Indiana has to offer as well. “The hunting, fishing and everything around in the countryside out here seems really exciting for me to dabble with, get out there and enjoy,” Wentz says. looms for at least the next month.
It’s still in the 90s most days, but fall is quickly approaching. August is the month that students go back to school, the football games dominate weekends and stores start to put out their fall styles if they haven’t already.
1. UTILIZE DENIM
Sweaters are probably the farthest thing from your mind, but if you love fall fashion as much as I do, you’re ready to start transitioning. There are a few easy ways to do that even with the summer heat that
Now is the time to add denim to your wardrobe. Stock up on a couple of pairs of new skinnies or boyfriend fit jeans because you’ll be able to wear them through the next couple of seasons. Nordstrom, Madewell, Evereve, and Sweet Olive are my go-to stores to find new AUGUST 2021
denim styles that are comfortable and also on trend for the year. 2. FLANNELS ARE A MUST
You simply can’t go wrong with flannels, especially for fall. Wear tthese now unbuttoned with a tank or graphic tee and your favorite denim shorts. Then when the temperatures drop, layer flannels with a vest paired with booties and your new high-rise skinny jeans. This is the ultimate piece for bonfires and, honestly, if you only add one item to your wardrobe for fall, it should be flannels. 3. PEEP TOE BOOTIES ARE A GOOD WAY TO GO
Right now, it’s a little too warm for booties with socks, at least for me. I’d suggest peep toe booties that will go with almost every outfit. You can wear these with dresses, denim or even shorts. DSW almost always has a great selection and they are my go-to store for shoes. 4. ADD FALL COLORS
It seems this year that fall colors have been on trend since January. We’ve seen mustard and olive for most of the summer, but if you haven’t added them to your wardrobe yet, now is certainly the time. Along with those two hues, purple, navy and burgundy are also a few to add to your shopping list. Try a fall-colored button-up paired with denim shorts and a peep toe bootie. That’s the perfect August look. 5. LAYER UP
As we move into fall, you probably notice that mornings are chilly followed by warm, sunny days and then back into breezy nights again. A light cardigan with a short sleeve floral top and your favorite denim is a good way to go. You can also use flannels as a layering piece. Leather jackets are common as we move into colder temps. But, be careful not to over-layer in a way that looks messy and confusing leaving you with no shape.
AUGUST 2021
6. SANDALS ARE ACCEPTABLE
Utilize those summer sandals as long as you can because your feet won’t see the light of day until at least March. I used to say that “jeans and flip-flop” weather is my favorite and that holds true today. Wear sandals with your favorite jumpsuits, denim or dresses until it’s just too cold. Black or cognac sandals are my suggestion for transitional colors. 7. ADD SOME PRINTS
Leopard is always popular for fall and so is plaid. Bold fall florals are another print to add. Pattern mixing is one of my favorite things to try for fall. I like to mix leopard flats with a plaid top and comfortable denim. Add statement earrings to the look and you’re good to go. These tips are easy ways to make fall clothing work even though it’s still warm outside. It’s best to start transitioning now while the stores are
coming out with those perfect pieces for your family photos at the apple orchard.

WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK FIVE TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR BREASTFEEDING EXPERIENCE
Writer / Jan Record, RN and Lactation Consultant at IU Health West Hospital Photography Provided
GET COMFORTABLE TOGETHER.
World Breastfeeding Week takes place annually during the first week of August, and is an opportunity to bring discussions about breastfeeding to the forefront of people’s minds. We’ve all heard that breastfeeding is advantageous for both babies and moms. From helping to boost a baby’s immune system to creating a strong emotional bond, there are plenty of benefits to consider. However, breastfeeding, like learning any new skill, can take time and patience, especially in the beginning.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR BREASTS.
ASK FOR HELP.
Your hospital’s lactation consultants and maternity nurses are there to support and help you through labor and your breastfeeding journey. Breastfeeding doesn’t always come naturally, and seeking help right away from lactation experts is a good way to ensure both you and your baby get started on a good path. Following your stay in the hospital, look for local breastfeeding support groups with lactation specialists.
POSTPONE PACIFIERS.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends waiting three to four weeks after birth to introduce a pacifier. This will help you and your baby establish a good breastfeeding routine. After the first month, pacifiers are less likely to interfere with breastfeeding.
Make sure your arms and your baby are supported during feedings. Use pillows to support your arms and make yourself comfortable. Having skin-to-skin contact with your baby immediately after birth, and as much as possible during the first few weeks, creates an emotional bond that helps with breastfeeding success. Remember, you and your baby are learning about this process together.
The skin of your breasts is very delicate and sensitive. Proper latch is important in preventing nipple trauma and soreness. Avoid using soap on your nipples, to prevent dryness and irritation. Putting a drop of your colostrum or milk onto your nipples after nursing will also help to prevent dryness. You can also use a medical-grade lanolin. If your baby has a little trouble mastering the skill of latching at first, hydrogel pads are also great for soothing sore nipples. Keep trying - it will get easier with practice.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.
While taking care of your baby, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated and resting as much as possible will help keep your energy up.

Whether you are buying, selling, or staying in your home, here are a few local real estate trends you need to know to help you navigate the current housing market. The market is still skinny on home options for Buyers. This means that buyers who are not fatigued by frequently submitting offers (but not winning) on homes are adjusting their list of “needs" and "wants" in every regard (desired size, location, price point, location). Given this, it is a fantastic time to sell a home without “needing’ to update everything (but updating will continue to help increase the value). If you do decide to sell, heed the buyers' struggle noted above. Low interest rates continue to be a solid inspiration point for buyers. Who knew we would still be seeing rates under 4%? Years ago, this meant that a buyer could get more house for their money, but with unprecedented home prices this is no longer the case. It is extremely important for buyers to establish a budget and not get carried into a bidding whirlwind that leaves them cash poor the day
they enter their new home. Sellers are lucky to be presented with multiple offers from well qualified buyers - making your parents right once again when they told you to save for a larger down payment. What if you intend to stay in your home but want to make improvements? The goal should always be to do the best job you can and get the best help, but many contractors are completely overwhelmed making this more difficult to accomplish. A new trend that I love is friends coming together to create "fix-itpods." These pods travel from home to home to complete an item on each friend’s to-do list (building shelves, cabinets, painting, and more). Each person in the group commits to working through each project with the expectation being that their projects will get completed as well. This is super smart and a really great way to help each other out and build community! Claire-Ann is a West Side Realtor helping people make Hendricks County their home. livia Head isn’t an average teenager, and she has no problem admitting it.
“I actually have no free time,” the 18-yearold says. “I unregrettably exchanged the typical teenage lifestyle for what I do.”
back in the day. Her mother was always very involved with rescuing dogs and cats. In fact, in nearly every picture from her childhood, Head is with her mom and some sort of animal. Head’s favorite photo is of her as a 1-year-old sitting in a cat crate with a mama cat and her kittens, petting them gently.
Head runs Oinking Acres Farm Rescue and Sanctuary in Brownsburg, where her mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home potbellied pigs and other farm animals. Since 2017 she has rescued 256 neglected, unwanted and abandoned animals. She has taken in cows, goats, sheep,
While many kids love having a dog or cat for a pet, Head loved her mother’s pigs, whose names were Pixie and Penelope. She tells the story of how her mom was at a flea market 25 years ago, watching some rambunctious kids squeezing a piglet, wanting to take it home. The children’s

mother was about to purchase the pig, but Head’s mom whipped out cash, paid the woman, and snatched up the pig to take her home, naming her Penelope.
Currently on her farm, she houses 65 pigs and a menagerie of other farm animals. Her entire day revolves around providing the best care she can for them, whether that’s medicated baths, washing their bedding, or meeting their physical needs the best she can. Her love of animals comes honestly. She grew up on a 36-acre farm. Her father is a hay farmer, and was even a rodeo cowboy
“My mom was always into broken and decrepit animals,” Head says. “I’m the same. I’ll take the broken and infirm all day long.” Head was 14 years old when Penelope passed away. She told her mom she wanted another pig. Her mother, adamantly against purchasing animals in favor of rescuing 36 / AVON MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2021 / TownePost.com
them, encouraged Head to do some research. In her research, Head found something disturbing. Many breeders were advertising teacup pigs - tiny pigs people could tote around or dress up. The problem was there is no such thing as teacup pigs, and those who buy them are upset to find they actually can grow up to 150 pounds or more. “Breeders swindle people,” Head says. “It’s like purchasing a Great Dane puppy and expecting it to stay the size of a chihuahua. These breeders overpopulate the market
with pigs to make a quick buck. They market that the pigs will stay small and not weigh more than 50 pounds, and that’s a lie.” As she learned more, she stumbled across A Critter’s Chance, an exotic-animal rescue organization in Hendricks County. There was one pig up for adoption whose name happened to be Penelope. Head immediately applied to adopt her and took her home as a project pig. “She was the first animal I really got to work
with,” Head says. “She had never had any training or socialization, and she was very skittish and scared.” Head worked with her for almost a year, learning more about pigs than she ever thought possible. “It’s mind-blowing how intelligent and emotional they are,” Head says. “I fell in love with everything about them.”

She began volunteering at A Critter’s Chance and fostering pigs whenever she could. Soon even that wasn’t enough for her, and the house she lived in wasn’t big enough for the amount of animals she wanted to help. Toward the end of 2018, she began the transition to her farm in Brownsburg. She slowly began to clean up her father’s former alfalfa hay barn. She was asked to join the board of A Critter’s Chance as a junior member. At the age of 16 she established her own 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and Oinking Acres was in full swing. Many may wonder how she has had time to help these animals and still keep up in school, but Head has arranged her life around her beloved animals, finishing high school through an online program at Ben Davis High School.
“There’s such a cookie-cutter mold nowadays as far as what’s expected of kids,” Head says. “Why would you want to be like everyone else? As far as free time, I spend it here. My entire existence revolves around 9-4886all meeting the needs of all the animals that are Main St.in my care.”

Even when she isn’t looking, Head finds animals who need her. Recently she stopped into a local farm supply store, steeling herself against looking at the chicks and ducklings. Unable to resist, she finally looked and noticed a duckling who couldn’t walk because of a deformed leg. She asked the manager if she could take him home. Now, Flipper resides with a foster family alongside another disabled duckling named Finn. In fact, that foster family includes a veterinary technician, who is a friend of Head’s and a

and back fields.
“We’re doing some cold laser treatments and physical therapy to correct Flipper’s deformities,” Head says.
Now, more than 10 years later, that’s where Head runs her pig rescue, right on the land where she grew up.
Head is well aware that she couldn’t do what she does without the farm she was raised on. When her parents had their third child, they decided to sell their farm, but because of the real estate crash in the early 2000s, they weren’t able to sell all of it. They parceled off the house and front yard, leaving the barns
“If my parents had sold it, I’d never be able to do this,” Head says. “It’s crazy how over a decade later, things come full circle. Sometimes it’s hard to find contentment with how things turn out, but it’s a reminder to just bloom where you’re planted, take it day by day, and let the story unfold. I believe

everything happens for a reason.” Aside from caring for her animals, Head is passionate about education. She has a laser focus on the image she puts out of her animals on social media, wanting to depict them as the beautiful creatures God made them to be, rather than how their stigma in society portrays them.

“Pigs in general carry a negative connotation in society,” Head says. “They actually are smart, clean, and deserving of love, care and attention. I try and capture them at their very best so hopefully people can see beyond the stigma.” Head has plans to grow her impact and outreach, wanting to expand her rescue and continuing her outreach and education on a larger scale. She’d love to add a bathroom, a medical room and a laundry room. She operates on donations and proceeds from charity events, with help from volunteers and the steadfast support of her mother and siblings, who come twice per day to help around the farm.

Head offers tours of her farm on the weekends for a small donation, determined to educate the public on pigs and animal care. “Being in rescue is mentally, emotionally and physically draining,” Head says. “At the same time, there’s nothing more rewarding than taking in this broken and hopeless little animal and rehabilitating it to the point where it is ready for adoption, helping them bloom into the amazing animal God created them to be. If you want to change the world, you have to start right where you are.” For more information or to schedule a tour, visit oinkingacres.org.
