Cass & Company Salon is celebrating hairstylist Jesslyn Wallace’s 20-year anniversary this fall. Although to friends and family, perhaps this doesn’t come as a surprise, because the artist has always loved doing hair. “Doing their hair was the most fun part of playing with dolls and Barbies,” Wallace says. “I used to do my friends’ hair and even cut my own hair when I was younger, and actually did a good job.”
“I love my clients, and you get to talk to people all day long,” she says. “I actually forget about the physical part of the work because it’s so much fun. You have to know how to do great hair, but it really comes down to how someone feels in your chair.”
Wallace says. “Don’t focus on the negative, focus on the positive and the positive things will come.” The wife and mother of a young son

In Wallace’s role, she’s welcomed clients who were excited, struggling or grieving whatever happens to be going on in their life at the time.
“Someone comes in and they’ve just found out their spouse has cancer, or their mom has passed away,” she says. “What do you say to that? I think sometimes you just give them a hug. There are times that I have to stop what I’m doing and no one else exists in this moment. It’s too important and it can make a difference to someone on that particular day.” Other times, Wallace has to remind clients of her no-negativity rule.
“People often talk badly about themselves, As a young college student, Wallace attended but I always say no one is allowed to talk IUPUI for two years but continued to come badly about themselves in my chair,” back to what she enjoyed most. 6 / AVON MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2023 / TownePost.com

As for Snodgrass, she’s happy to recognize and celebrate her team. “We like to recognize the team for their accomplishments, celebrate anniversaries, host bridal and baby showers, and always work with each other and help each other,” Snodgrass says. “I think there’s such a high respect for and within the staff.” In addition to hair stylists specializing in a variety of styles and treatments, the salon also features an aesthetic department with lash, microblading and massage treatments.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU AS THE FIRE CHIEF? We work Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. However, as runs and business dictate, we will stay later and be around on nights and weekends. Typically we arrive and the staff catches up on the direction of the day for operations and administration, and we discuss any upcoming meetings and topics to be covered, before beginning our daily duties with regards to time keeping, training plans, operational needs and ongoing incident follow-up.
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP AVON FIRE DEPARTMENT CHIEF DANNY BROCK handshake and asking about the day and/or family. Other times, we field concerns or questions to keep everyone updated as to the latest happenings or upcoming township meetings. Daily interaction is key, and we also schedule time for the staff to visit the firehouses in order to stay grounded with living conditions, while continuing the focus that “the people who serve the people” matter. Shift personnel serve the community daily, and it is our job to serve them so they may do their job and provide for their families at home. We have to know each other on a personal level in order to trust each other in our chosen line of service.
paramount to job satisfaction. We want people to be well-compensated with great benefits, but ultimately we want everyone to stay because we provide a team and environment they want to be a part of, for the duration of a career where they spend one-third of their lives. People do not care how much a leader knows until they know how much you care. My favorite part is truly the people who make up Washington Township Avon Fire Department (WTAFD).
WHAT IS MOST CHALLENGING ABOUT YOUR JOB? The most challenging part of the job is the As the fire chief, I will check in with the trustee WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART overall responsibility of the title, and the and the township staff for any particular personalization of “who is the fire chief,” versus ABOUT YOUR JOB? needs. the organization. The challenge comes with putting the personality to the position. Many entities take on the personality of the leadership, and it is my goal and the goal of our staff to create an urgent yet personable feel within the organization. Our calling deals with the worst day of many people’s lives. Therefore we have to be able to be skilled, trustworthy and ready in a moment’s notice. We have to accomplish these actions through a combination of skill and trust, with trust being of the utmost importance. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND WHAT LED YOU TO BECOME AVON’S NEW FIRE CHIEF. My background as it pertains to the fire service is nontraditional at its core. I started in the fire service in 2006 after applying with a good friend and former co-worker at Allison Transmission, Davion Carrillo. He and I finished first and third in the process out of over 200 applicants, and I had to refer to him as Mr. Number One for a few weeks, until our start date on July 17 of that year. We left the corporate world after nearly a decade of management and started our journey into the fire service with Brownsburg Fire Territory. In 2019, after holding various leadership positions with IAFF Local 4406 of Hendricks County, being a peer fitness trainer for Brownsburg Fire Territory, and an engine chauffeur of E133-C, I accepted the position as the health and safety chief, where I was afforded the opportunity to create various health and wellness initiatives, implement
cancer prevention initiatives and begin mental health resiliency trainings, among other programs. The fire chief, Larry Alcorn, also involved me in many policy reviews that started in 2020 with the management of the COVID-19 pandemic. That experience was truly a trial by fire. Upon the completion of the pandemic protocols, I was assigned the position of public information officer along with my health and safety chief duties, where I held two appointed positions simultaneously until starting at Washington Township Avon Fire Department as the fire chief. Upon the election of Washington Township Trustee Ryan Miller, he discussed various candidates he was considering for the position of fire chief. After rumors began swirling about me being a candidate when I was not, I decided to make the rumors true and turn in my resume to Trustee Miller and voiced my intent to be considered. After over a month of deliberation and near radio silence, he made his decision and called me in late January of 2023. My management background and letters of recommendation from former business associates and leaders, former fire chiefs, and the state fire marshal, led to his final decision. I believe in going after something once it has been fully considered, and I did just that with my intentions on being considered. Although it was not on my radar given my job satisfaction with Brownsburg Fire Territory, these chances only come once in a lifetime, and I had faith in myself and the potential of Washington Township Avon Fire Department, so I chose to put my best foot forward.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. I have been married to my wife, Stephanie, for 23 years and we have been together for nearly 26 years. We have three adult children, Devin, 23, Kelli, 22, and Dalton, 19. All are graduates of Decatur Central High School, and Kelli recently graduated Hanover College with a major in health and human movement. Devin is still taking classes, and Dalton will be starting college at Ivy Tech and transitioning to IUPUI in pursuit of a degree in communications. Stephanie works for Maple Elementary in the Impact Program and has been employed by the Avon Community School Corporation for over four years. At the beginning of our relationship, she was working for Bank One NA until the birth of our third child. Being a high-risk pregnancy, she decided to focus on her health and become a stay-athome mother. Having her at home proved invaluable to the development of our family, and is not something that is common in today’s society. We worked well together in our decision to structure our family as such, and she balanced my high energy and somewhat overzealous personality when needed. We are truly a continuing story of opposites attracting.

Today our oldest, Devin, is a football coach at Ben Davis High School while taking college classes. Dalton is pursuing his dream of becoming a professional wrestler while working on his degree. Kelli recently accepted a position as the assistant aquatic director with the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township, and is also serving as the assistant high school varsity swim coach. They have been a blessing to watch grow up and participate in sports, where each excelled physically and/or academically at various levels. Devin was able to participate in the 2018 5A state finals for football his senior year at Decatur Central, where he was all-conference and honorable mention All-Marion County. Kelli was a team captain for track and swimming at Decatur Central High School, and was a key part of Hanover College’s HCAC indoor track conference championship her freshman year and HCAC outdoor track and field conference championship her senior year. She finished her senior year at Hanover College on the dean’s list for academic achievement. Dalton wrestled for Decatur Central, and lettered all four years while being academic All-Conference and academic All-State his junior and senior years, with a cumulative GPA of over 3.9 on a 4-point scale.

The school system is great and the after-school activities coupled with the Washington Township parks system provides endless entertainment opportunities. Washington Township and Avon provide a great family atmosphere for education, living, growth and entertainment. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL RESTAURANT AND WHY? you don’t know how, ask because someone will show you. If you don’t care, leave because nobody has time for lack of passion. Second, there is such thing as a first and last, so don’t settle for mediocre. Put forth your best effort and take what is yours. If you do not, someone else will. Third, nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care. WHAT’S THE BEST VACATION YOU’VE EVER BEEN ON? Sounds clichéd, but any vacation away from the hustle and taken with friends or family is a great vacation. Ideally, I would be on a beach with good music and a few cocktails. WHAT IS A UNIQUE SKILL OR TALENT YOU HAVE? Outside of the gift of gab, I don’t have a unique skill or talent. WHY DID YOU LEAVE YOUR PREVIOUS POSITION AS PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER AT BROWNSBURG FIRE TERRITORY? My previous position with Brownsburg Fire Territory was not just PIO. It was also health and safety chief. I held both appointed positions simultaneously and was compensated as such. I will never forget my
time at Brownsburg Fire Territory, our recruit class (Class 06-008), our Training Captain Alex Brand, and Fire Chief Mike Rosemeyer. Brownsburg Fire and those particular individuals shaped me, my view of the fire service and my willingness to step into this position - not to mention the administrative staff that allotted me the opportunity to begin my administrative duties prior to accepting the position of fire chief with WTAFD. Chief Rosemeyer was one of the first people I contacted when I decided to consider this move. His advice was to discuss the demands of the opportunity with my wife and family because this responsibility required me to be all-in, but he would write a letter of recommendation if I confirmed with them first. Chief Rosemeyer was what we call a firefighter’s fire chief. This means that you serve the people who serve the people, while being conservative with taxpayer dollars. Ultimately, do what is right versus what is solely asked of an elected official responsible for your appointment. We ask our brave men and women to take an oath that may require them to risk everything to save a life. Therefore, as the fire chief I have to be willing to make the same sacrifice for right and wrong. Always stand for what protects the fire and EMS personnel, and their ability to serve the community, versus a political agenda. He held true to that in his tenure, and I plan on following that example within my own personality and abilities. WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT THAT THEY MAY NOT ALREADY KNOW? Our department is fully committed to the service of this community. Our relationship with our community partners and the Avon Police Department is unparalleled versus my observation of departments in our general area. Contrary to the running jokes and riffs between police and fire, our two entities truly respect one another and stay in contact on a regular basis to create a true public safety presence. We are a township-based department formally named Washington Township Avon Fire Department. We serve the township and town equally, but are funded by the township as a whole.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE HENDRICKS COUNTY TRADITION/EVENT AND WHY? National Night Out, because Chief Stoops and his staff put on a great event that benefits both entities, police and fire. Though National Night Out is a police-driven event, we are able to participate and meet our citizens en masse as attendees as well. WTAFD and APD truly have a great working relationship from the street level through the administrative office positions. ARE YOU A TAYLOR SWIFT FAN AND DID YOU GET A CODE/TICKETS? Participating in any form is a great way to create a healthy tradition for yourself and your family, but nothing beats joining the Thanksgiving gathering with the community. “Chase the Turkey will be making appearances throughout the community this fall, and at the Gobble Gallop he participates in a few games we play,” Richards says. “Chase runs on the course, and those who can grab one of his feathers will receive a special prize.” Participants really get into the spirit with costumes, “magic socks,” and posters celebrating the day. “You see entire families walking together - grandma, grandpa, mom or dad pushing the stroller, and others bring their dog on a leash,” Richards says. “Whatever family is to you, it’s just a fun event for everyone.”

Last year, $324,000 was awarded in financial assistance to community members. The funds help subsidize membership costs and program fees, allowing everyone to join in the many programs the YMCA has to offer. CELEBRATING TWO VILLAGE OF AVON RESIDENTS LIVING LIFE BEYOND AGE 100 Writer / Melissa Gibson Photography Provided
The Village of Avon, along with family and friends, is celebrating two special birthdays this year. Beth Pilcher turned 103 on August 3, and Josephine Mayrose turned 104 on September 26.
in a family of six children. Though the family moved frequently, by the time Pilcher was in high school, they had settled in Plainfield, and she graduated in 1938. She married and worked in retail, eventually becoming an assistant buyer for L.S. Ayres. Pilcher’s daughter, Gay Younce, recalls a popular story she’s always liked to tell.
“In the 1940s she was able to go to New York In 1919 and 1920, Woodrow Wilson was City on a business trip,” Younce says. “They president, World War I had just ended, and the took the train from Indianapolis to New York world had not yet seen so many other history- and the train fare was $72.20. They stayed for making joys and tragedies. As you might four days at the Dorsett hotel and paid $12 per expect, the stories, history and memories the night. I still have the train tickets.” women share are of days when the schedule was a bit slower, family was most important Despite her adventures in the workplace, and even the price of gas back then would Younce recalls Pilcher’s family leadership most surprise us today. of all. She was a stay-at-home mother for her Pilcher, now a resident at the Village of Avon, was born in Martinsville, the second
three children, taught a preschool Sundayschool class at the local church, and belonged to bridge groups and other social clubs.

“Mom was a very good cook,” Younce says. “She and I would enjoy cooking in the kitchen, and through those times she really became my best friend. She made everything from scratch, including an amazing birthday cake each year. In the last few years she sat in the kitchen and talked me through making one for her grandkids.” Family gatherings and birthday celebrations were always held at Pilcher’s home, and she enjoyed creating a supportive and loving environment. “Mom was always quiet, very giving and very loving,” Younce says. “She was always there for us and we knew she had our backs no matter what.” For her 103rd birthday, Younce and her brother brought Pilcher to her son’s home to celebrate with close family. She sat on the back porch for hours, enjoying the weather and the
teacher, Mrs. Alexander,” Mayrose wrote. “She gave me a book each of the years she taught me, and I never missed a day of school in all 12 years.” School was a memorable experience for Mayrose. In addition to the recognition she received for perfect attendance, she recalls drinking water from a well, outdoor toilets, and keeping warm in the winter around an old potbelly stove. They walked one and a half miles to school and she didn’t ride a bus until the fifth grade. love that surrounded her.
Her memories are full of funny moments too.
She’s now a grandmother of eight and greatgrandmother of six. Her younger sister, Judy, now 80, still comes to visit every chance she gets.
As she got older, Mayrose remembers deciding with her niece to kill a chicken “just like mom did.”
“Her memory was a bit foggy but she knew her family was there,” Younce says. “She was able to chat with us and ask about things. She just had a really great day.” Her secret? “Mom has never had any major health concerns,” Younce says. “She was hardly ever sick, even now. She’s such a good person, giving of her time and resources.” When Younce had two young children and went back to work full-time, her mother cared for her children, getting them ready for school or preparing dinner. “I’ve always said I’ll never be able to do all the things she did,” Younce says. Josephine Mayrose, also a resident at the Village of Avon, grew up in the same time period, born in 1919. Earlier in life, her family asked that she write down memories and moments that stood out to her, giving us a great legacy of stories and memories to share. The youngest of nine children, Mayrose could recall starting her education in a two-room schoolhouse in Harmony, Indiana. “I loved my second-, third- and fourth-grade
“I got the chicken’s head on the block of wood and when I came down with the axe, the chicken ran with its head half off,” Mayrose wrote. “We finally caught it and finished the job, but I didn’t eat chicken for a long time after that.” At around 10 years old, Mayrose began spending summers with a family who needed help with an ailing mother. They paid her $2 per week and bought her school clothes from the Sears catalog. It was during the summer between sixth and seventh grade that Mayrose chose to come home early - just a few days before the untimely death of her father. That loss is perhaps why the importance of family and being kind to others was ingrained in Mayrose from an early age - something she then passed on to her children and grandchildren. “She has always been a kind person,” says her daughter, Linda Bland. “We were always helping our elderly neighbors and she stressed the importance of family.” As a mother, Mayrose taught her children to join in and work hard. “Mom was involved in everything,” Bland says. “She was my Girl Scout leader and my Sunday-school teacher. She always encouraged me to do anything I wanted to do and helped me do it.” 22 / AVON MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2023 / TownePost.com
Mayrose was married for 70 years before the passing of her husband, Robert, in 2009. Her 100th birthday was celebrated with a large party, including family, friends, and the nowgrown women she led in the Girl Scouts. At 104, she may have slowed down a bit, but it hasn’t stopped her from making friends and still getting involved. “She has dementia now and she’s in a wheelchair, but she can wheel herself all over the assisted-living home,” Bland says. “They all know her and talk to her.” The Village of Avon exists to provide a comfortable home for aging adults. Their commitment and love for the residents is evident. “Josephine and Beth are so sweet,” says Kassy Teckenbrock, director of admissions. “Josephine has such an intriguing background growing up, and her daughter visits on a daily basis. Beth smiles so happily when the staff surprises her with the smallest things. They are both such a joy for staff.” Within one community of those 55 and over, they offer independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing care and rehabilitation. Though they are near plenty of restaurants, shopping and entertainment, within the facility itself, one can find courtyards, gardens, a salon and spa, and a private dining room for family gatherings. Through social, educational and entertainment activities, staff and residents get to know each other and form a family of their own. Visit avonhealthandrehab.com for more information.

FLU SEASON HOW TO AVOID GETTING SICK Writer / Jane Forni, Registered Nurse and Infection Preventionist at IU Health West Hospital Photography Provided
As the weather gets colder, you may hear of more and more people getting the flu. Influenza, better known as the flu, is a contagious and potentially serious respiratory illness that can lead to serious complications. While the virus is detected year-round, the flu typically circulates during the fall and winter months. However, there are steps you can take to protect yourself.
KNOW THE COMMON FLU SYMPTOMS. Common symptoms of the flu include fever or chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue. Not everyone with flu has a fever, and some people have vomiting and diarrhea, which is more common in children than adults.
When severe enough, symptoms of the flu can require hospitalization. Without proper care, the flu can be deadly. Seek medical attention for high fevers, or if you have other medical conditions that the flu may complicate including diabetes, asthma or congestive heart failure. You can get the flu multiple times each year.
FLU SHOTS ARE RECOMMENDED.
Each year, scientists develop a new flu shot to cover the most common strains of the flu. The first step in avoiding sickness is to get the most current flu vaccine. Getting a flu shot may not make you completely immune from getting sick, but it can significantly lessen the severity of your symptoms.
TAKE OTHER STEPS TOWARD FLU PREVENTION.
You can also take everyday measures to limit the spread of germs. Stay out of close contact with people who are sick. If you are sick, limit contact with others, especially those at increased risk of severe illness. Remember to always wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, cover your coughs and sneezes, and do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands. It’s also important to clean and disinfect surfaces, especially during flu season. If you do get sick with the flu, antiviral medications prescribed by your health care provider may help reduce the time you are sick and may also help prevent serious flu complications. If you are feeling any flu-like symptoms, make sure you discuss them with your health care provider sooner rather than later.

Matt Harloff
Music Man MATT HARLOFF TAKES THE HELM FOR THE AVON MARCHING BLACK AND GOLD Writer / Melissa Gibson Photographer / Amy Payne
Matt Harloff loves music. Born and raised in Iowa, Harloff ’s father is a retired band director, exposing Harloff to marching bands, drum corps and all things music related. “The Drum Corps International Championships are held in Indianapolis every year and that was like a family
vacation for us,” Harloff says. “We loved being a part of it. Eventually I loved performing in it, and I just knew I wanted to be around that.” After serving as assistant director under former Director Jay Webb for Avon’s Marching Black and Gold since 1996, this past summer Harloff was named band director of the prestigious program. “It’s weird for me to say band director, TownePost.com / NOVEMBER 2023 / AVON MAGAZINE / 27
because there are so many people that do so many things for the entire team,” Harloff says. “There’s this culture that was created before me. I think it’s a great testament to the personality of our community. We work hard and that’s what I love about Avon.” Harloff has been the only assistant director with Avon’s Marching Black and Gold, an unusual accomplishment to say the least. In a world where many of us change jobs multiple times throughout our careers, Harloff can say he’ll hold his position at the same school throughout. “If you think about it, this is the first year that someone other than myself has been the assistant band director,” he said. “My entire career will be at one place, but ultimately it’s all about the kids.” It’s not hard to imagine the high-pressure
challenge Harloff has on his hands. The Avon Marching Black and Gold has placed in the top three in both state and national competitions for the past 15 years - an incredible record of success to which other bands aspire. Harloff says he not only welcomes the pressure, but also that receiving a medal isn’t even his top goal.

“I look at pressure as a privilege,” he says. “If you have pressure, then you know you’re doing something right. It’s an honor to have pressure and you want it. There is that competitive success, but there’s a much bigger picture to all of this.” That bigger picture includes growth, inspiration and memories for students, and this means challenging music, fresh shows and the mission to make each year the best it can be. “Performing on the biggest stage in front of a lot of people is something they’ll never forget, and it can only help them be successful in the future,” Harloff says. “It’s often like that great family vacation. In the last couple of days, you don’t want this to end. It was awesome and of course we’re excited to try something new, but we’re not ready for this season to end.” Avon Community School Corporation recently announced their marching band will be traveling to New York City to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in November 2024. While it’s still a way off, and staff are just now making travel plans and getting things in order, it’s just the type of
28 / AVON MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2023 / TownePost.com
memory Harloff hopes to bring to his students. “The first time I went to New York City was for the Macy’s parade and I’ll never forget it,” he says. “You see pictures of the city, but it’s totally different when you’re actually there. I’m excited for our students, to watch their faces while they experience this, and I’m excited for our community. It’s going to be really cool to see our community represented in this parade that’s watched by millions every year.” However, Harloff ’s first order of business is the 2023 season, and he’s got plenty of reason to look forward to it. “My daughter is a senior and is a drum major this year,” he says. “There’s always a personal connection to not only her but her class, so I’m excited about that first and foremost. I’m also excited to work with our staff, students and parents to make this season one that is special, and one that everyone remembers for a long time.” The season, Harloff says, is a long one. They begin working on a new program almost as soon as the last one is complete. New music, new choreography and new students coming on board takes a lot of work, to create the final performance we see in the stands. Several nights per week the band practices. They perform at Avon High School home football games and will compete nearly every Saturday through mid-November, completing the season with the Indiana State School Music Association state competition, and Bands of America National Championships. The 2023 show title is “Tableaux.” “We’re creating frames throughout the show and ultimately the students will be in the frames, like motionless figures depicting a scene,” Harloff says. “Our music is taken from a well-known piece called ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ by Modest Mussorgsky. It makes perfect sense. Daniel Wiles is the mastermind behind all of our shows and we’re having a blast working on this.” TownePost.com / NOVEMBER 2023 / AVON MAGAZINE / 29
Ultimately, Harloff says the shows and the awards pale in comparison to what he hopes students receive from participating in the program. “A huge part of our program is about education and inspiration,” he says. “We want to help them get to where they want to be. There can be those rough days, and I often say that if you’ve ever seen your mom get sick or injured, no matter what, she’s there. We have to be as tough as that - as strong as that. We have to do what it takes to be great, and in the process they’re learning how to work with others, work ethic, paying attention to detail, never to be satisfied, and to always fight to be the best you can possibly be.” In fact, everything the students learn in the band can be applied to everyday life. While it may not be a performance every time, moving into college and adult life with the skills to organize and manage time, pay attention to detail and work with others will go a long way in any field or profession. “It’s so much more than playing the right notes,” Harloff says. “I can’t count how many students who have come up to all of our directors and told stories of how they went on to be professionals in other things besides music, and what they were able to take away from the band activity.”

To achieve the goals, Harloff gives credit to all the people who make the awardwinning program what it is today. “The Avon band is full of people who make it great,” he says. “It’s not just one person. There are so many people that aren’t in the band room every day. It’s our community, our administration, our parents and our staff. That’s the biggest thing for me. This is a team effort.” Follow the Avon Marching Black and Gold’s 2023 season at avonband.com, or on their Facebook page.
