Writer / Joshua Deisler . Photgrapher / Brian Brosmer

Chris Tincher sits alongside his wife, daughters and son as the Chick-fil-A restaurant is abuzz with the Friday dinner crowd. Kids are running to the playground, families are sitting down to relax and employees are happily serving customers. But even in the calm yet busy atmosphere, Chris remembers his time bussing tables – a time he never thought would lead him here. Chris never had plans to open a restaurant. The journey began back when he was a teenager as he worked alongside his grandmother at a Holiday Inn in Louisville, KY. Eventually Chris worked his way up from bellhop to restaurant supervisor, from desk clerk to hotel manager. “It was fascinating. It was all about service and taking care of guests,” says Chris. But after almost two decades of working in the hotel industry, he began to look for a better, more stable opportunity. Indeed, Chris needed much more time with his growing family. He met his wife Amber at church camp but didn’t begin dating her until after serving in the Army as a medical specialist. When he returned home from duty in Korea, Chris finished his college degree in religious education. Years later, he returned to school to earn his MBA in 2000.

Chris and his wife Amber have twin girls, Chloe and Jasmine, who are 11 years old and in fifth grade. Chris and Amber started the adoption process for Chloe and Jasmine in early 2005. It took almost a year to gather all the documents and wait for approval. In August 2006, the couple traveled to China and held their daughters for the first time. The couple then had a “surprise blessing.” Amber soon became pregnant with Reece, now 7 years old. “We went from zero to three children in two years,” says Chris. Having time for family weighed on Chris’ mind as he searched for new opportunities. “The hotel industry is a 24/7 operation,” he says. Chick-fil-A was a new concept in Indianapolis, and Chris didn’t know much about the company. But after a chance meeting with an owner of a Chick-fil-A restaurant, Chris began to consider the opportunity. Many aspects of the Chick-fil-A business attracted Chris. For one, the business is closed on Sundays, which would give Chris more time with his family. When Chris became a franchisee, Chickfil-A only had 800 restaurants. In the last 14 years, the size has grown to over 2,000 locations. But Chris would have to be approved before he could become a franchisee. “The process is very selective,” says Chris, who

sent the company a 14-page letter of interest. Out of 20,000 applications that year, Chris was one of the 80 selected. Another aspect that appealed to Chris was the restaurant’s mission of being a faithful steward. “We want to add value to others,” says Chris. After being the franchisee of the Castleton Chick-fil-A, Chris took the opportunity in 2009 to take over the existing restaurant in Avon. Every day is a little different. Sometimes Chris is behind the counter, serving customers. Other times, he’s training his leadership team, meeting with community members or working in the office. “Whether it’s developing leaders, investing in team members, serving our guests or volunteering in our community, I fulfill my purpose when I can add value to others,” he says. When Sunday rolls around, he’s thankful for the opportunity to rest and to worship at his local church, where he and his wife play very active roles. Being closed on Sunday, says Chris, also helps retain and recruit good talent. Chris values his employees, especially his leadership team. “For us, we have different leaders who take different ownership of different parts of the business,” says Chris, who enjoys giving his employees new leadership opportunities and allowing them to make mistakes and grow. Chris especially appreciates playing an active role in the day-to-day running of the business.

After the day is finished, Chris is involved in coaching his son’s football team and supporting the community in education and youth leadership. He also serves on board of the Avon Education Foundation, for which the restaurant serves as a community sponsor. The restaurant also teams with Avon Community Schools and supports local athletics. Amber keeps busy chauffeuring kids to practices, games and recitals as well as playing an active role in their church and hosting the Chickfil-A employees at their house. “My greatest joy is when the kids come home and hearing what’s happening throughout the day,” she says. For Chris, his greatest professional joy is the opportunity to see satisfied team members who love their jobs. “Ultimately, we are in the people business,” he says. At home, his greatest joy is seeing his family, all smiling at the end of the day. And, as the restaurant fills with customers on the warm Friday evening, Chris turns to his son and asks how often the family eats at Chick-fil-A. Son Reece replies, “Too much!” “Well, what’s your favorite?” replies Chris. And Reece looks right at him and whispers, “McDonald’s!”

GO FORTH! DEFINING COMPETITION: INDIANA’S MARCHING BANDS DEFINING COMPETITION: INDIANA’S MARCHING BANDS Writer / Kara Kavensky

The 2016 Indiana State Marching Band Competition finished in this order:

Class A 1. Avon 2. Carmel

For all of the bands listed above, it is clear that Indiana is a hotbed of intense competition, with Indianapolis-area schools not needing to travel far for a heated rivalry. Fishers High School, making it to the state finals for the first time in school history, ranked respectfully among its peers. Lawrence North, Center Grove and Brownsburg all had strong finishes. The headlining story of the season was the battle for Number 1 and Number 2 spots, with the Marching Greyhounds of Carmel High School on the heels of Avon’s Marching Black and Gold leading into Nationals. Nationals, which was held at Lucas Oil Stadium November 10 to 12, showcased the best of the best from across the country. Notice that the top four state finalists from Indiana all finished in the top 11 overall at Nationals. The Bands of America Nationals wrapped up with these final results:

97.45 - Carmel H.S., Indiana 97.45 - Avon H.S., Indiana

What appears as a tie for first place, was decided, per regulations of Bands of America, upon the Outstanding General Effect score, which nudged the Carmel High School Marching Greyhounds into first place. This was the first time in Nationals history where two

bands tied for first place. “This was as close as it could get,” explains Carmel High School Band Director Chris Kreke. “Avon won the music caption by .2 of a point and won visual by .1 of a point, and we won the general effect by .3, producing the tie. It’s an awesome rivalry between us and Avon, and it is great to have this level of competition around us, as it pushes us all to be better and this is the by-product of that.” Avon Director of Bands Jay Webb adds, “The first time we saw Carmel this season they beat us, and the next three times we beat them. It is a great rivalry and has been that way for over a decade. Lawrence Central, Center Grove and Carmel have represented the benchmarks to reach. The level of competition in our area is one of the strongest in the country.” Every show is built around a concept. Avon High School structured its concept around a Walt Whitman poem, “O Pioneer.” Webb explains his vision, “Go Forth! Tells the story of how the youth of America will move our country forward, move our society forward. We used the music of Aaron Copeland and Bon Iver.” While there is strong competition, the marching band community is one large, supportive family. The audience cheers for every performance, for all know how hard the students works at their craft. When tragedy strikes in one form or another, the word “band” plays a more significant role on a deeply personal level. Sophie Rinehart, soloist for Castle High School, gave an amazing performance on Saturday evening. Sadly, she would perish in a car accident on her way home that night, along with her father and grandmother. It’s a loss for the entire marching band and arts community. Sophie left us with an indelible performance and one that should have experienced an encore.

MORE THAN A POLITICIAN

JOHN CRANE CARRIES UNIQUE FAMILY HISTORY AND PURPOSE INTO OFFICE

Writer / Ruth Schenk . Photographer / Kyle Duell

In January, John Crane will take a seat in the Indiana Statehouse representing District 24 in the Indiana State Senate. It’s a new role — his first in public office. When he takes office, his goals will be threefold, he said: listen before you legislate, focus on local control and don’t negotiate on non-negotiables. Winning the seat in the Indiana Senate

is only part of Crane’s story. Though he has multiple degrees, studied at Oxford in England, writes columns, blogs and articles, he sees himself as a simple family man, defined by age-old principles of faith and family. John and his wife, Jean, live in Avon with their four children, Caleb, Andrew, Mark and Emma, and his family keeps him extremely busy. This, however, has not kept Crane from giving back, including the 2010 founding of the Sagamore Leadership 12 / AVON MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2016 / AvonMagazine.com

Initiative, Inc., which was created to train the next generation of leaders. There were times, however, when life didn’t unfold as planned. Crane was just 11 when the family farmhouse burned to ashes in an electrical fire. The family lost everything but the clothes on their backs. “That fire taught us not to hold too tightly to possessions and that Hoosier

hospitality is real,” Crane said. “Neighbors helping neighbors embodies the best about our state.” He also has a heart for the unemployed and underemployed. This concern goes back to 2008 when he was a youth pastor. His position was eliminated and he found himself unemployed. Doors to a new position didn’t swing open immediately, so to pay the bills he took any job he could find, including delivering newspapers for the Indianapolis Star. He admits those days were tough on his ego, especially after earning multiple degrees. But they also sparked empathy for those in similar situations. “I decided I could look at unemployment as regressing in my professional development or I could look at it as learning experience,” Crane said. “I have a heart for working men and women who want to make a contribution and provide basic necessities for their families.” As a youngster, Crane planned to follow in his parents’ footsteps and serve in the military. They met in Vietnam during the war, where his father was a psychiatrist with the 25th Infantry Division, treating men and women dealing with what is now known as post-traumatic stress disorder. His mother served as a nurse at the 12th Evacuation hospital, caring for the wounded. Crane hope to serve, as well, but that dream was dashed due to a limp he acquired during surgery when he was 2 years old. While the limp never slowed him down, it did prevent his enlistment. That, too, became a turning point. “I realized I might not be called to serve in the American military, but there are other ways to make a contribution to my family, community and the nation,” he said. That desire to serve eventually led to the idea of running for political office. He hadn’t thought about it until friends urged him to consider it. At the time, he was busy as CEO of the Sagamore Leadership Initiative, Inc. Crane said he founded Sagamore because he sees potential in today’s youth as future leaders. “Many are disheartened as they look at young people today, but at Sagamore, we work with young leaders with tremendous potential,” he said. “They are waiting for someone to come alongside them to focus on reaching their full potential. “We are blessed to live in the greatest nation in the world. We can make a difference by having courage when it counts.” 14 / AVON MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2016 / AvonMagazine.com

Long keeps this photo of himself as Buddy Walker from the movie Hoosiers with fellow actor Dennis Hopper.

Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Brian Brosmer

After a brief time out to talk strategy, Jimmy Chitwood and the rest of the Hickory Huskers basketball players return to the court to play out the final seconds of the state championship game against South Bend Central. Chitwood sneaks past the guard to advance for his final shot. He jumps, he scores, and Hickory wins 42-40 over South Bend.

Southwestern College. He said the smaller college experience gave him plenty of court time and some unforgettable games. “The coach let us play Division One schools,” he said. “We played schools including Oklahoma, Texas, and BYU in what they called ham and egg games, and learned so much. I wouldn’t trade that experience for the world.”

After college, Long returned to the basketball mecca that is the Hoosier state, The final scene in the movie “Hoosiers” still and that’s where our discussion returned. makes my pulse race 30 years after I first saw As we continued rehashing memories of it. Countless real-life Hoosiers are reliving the our alma mater, Long and I recall how the glory, too, at various parties around the state Trojans took their hoops very seriously and celebrating the movie’s release, 30 years ago. often progressed far in the tourney. But then again, the entire Hoosier state took hoops I caught up with Brad Long, who played very seriously. Buddy Walker, to relive some of the hoops action. Long said, “The movie came along during Not surprisingly, Long has remained in Indiana, not far from where he grew up. A fellow Center Grove High School alumnus, Long grew up in the Center Grove area and played basketball for the Trojans. “It was an honor to play for the team. I miss the old gym. It was such a fun place to play,” Long recalled. Long left Center Grove and headed west to another basketball-loving state, Kansas, to play for the Moundbuilders of

the perfect era. In the ‘80s, fans packed arenas for high school games, college and pro games.”

Indiana basketball fans were uniquely loyal to the sport, largely thanks to a single-class basketball system in which any school, no matter how big or small, had a chance to win the state championship. Long confessed, “My heart wishes Indiana would go back to that single-class system. Seeing old gyms packed like the ones in the movie really makes you miss it.” INDY METRO / DECEMBER 2016 / TownePost.com

To add to the enthusiasm, the popularity of Bobby Knight’s Hoosiers was at an all-time high with stars like Landon Turner, Ted Kitchell, Uwe Blab, and, of course, Steve Alford. The team had such a following that many folks couldn’t wait to tune in to Channel 4 for the IU game, kicked off by Rosemary Clooney and her rendition of the Indiana Fight Song. Even my mom watched it with us, claiming she was an obligatory fan, only because she was paying the school tuition. “Hoosiers” writer Angelo Pizzo and director David Anspaugh found that Indiana provided the perfect fan base and ideal film location. But getting the project off the ground was no slam-dunk. Starting with just a $6 million budget, they had to think creatively to make it happen. The filmmakers put out a callout asking for basketball players high school age up to 24 to audition for the movie. Long says he didn’t notice the callout, but his friends saw and urged him to try out. “I told them I wasn’t going to do it. I was 23 at the time, just graduated from college, started my first job, and I was engaged to be married.” But his friends persisted, and he tried out. He didn’t read for a specific part, but was delighted to be offered the part of Buddy Walker. The casting process was unique, Long recalled.

“Usually in a film like this, they pick actors who they hope might be able to play a little basketball,” he said. “This time, they wanted players with some skills and hoped they could teach them to act.” It’s a strategy that worked out, Long said, “Because the game scenes were not staged. We were actually playing ball.”

But the magic of “Hoosiers” will continue to endure for years to come, and Long said there’s one special element in the film that made it happen. “Redemption. It’s a theme that’s entwined throughout the movie,” he explained. “It’s not just about winning the game at the end. It’s about the team’s redemption, Shooter

Flatch’s redemption, and the coach’s redemption. Anyone can identify with that no matter what the era.” Long has his own message to audiences when he speaks. “Find your passion in life and pursue it. If you do, you’ll go far.”

As for learning acting skills, Long said he learned a little secret from leading actor Gene Hackman. “He was great. He taught me that the art of acting is not to act; it’s to just be yourself.” The busy filming schedule had Long jumping between locations in Knightstown, New Richmond, Nineveh, St. Philip Neri School, and, of course, Hinkle Fieldhouse. Unfortunately, the busy filming schedule required long and his fiancée to move their wedding date from November to December 1985. This gave Long a much different experience than most 23-year-olds, fresh out of college.

In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.

“You just get through it, and do what you have to do.” Thirty years later, Long is still reliving the glory as he makes his rounds doing motivational speaking. “I’m so blessed to have the opportunity to share my experience with others,” he said. “I’m truly humbled by the success the movie has attained. I give all the credit to the writer and director for making such an inspiring film.” But inspiring a new era and new generation isn’t easy. Especially today, when teens spend so much time on digital technology, play numerous sports, and their attention is drawn elsewhere. “Basketball used to be a big deal. Now it’s not as revered. It takes the crowd out of it when there are so many other things to do,” Long explained.

A BEEF & BOARDS CHRISTMAS Writer / Leia Barker

The heartfelt joy of the holiday season takes the stage in style at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre as Santa and his friends celebrate the 24th annual production of “A Beef & Boards Christmas,” which opened November 25. “I am giddy when November rolls around and we start rehearsals,” said Deb Wims, who co-hosts the show with Kenny Shepard. “Sometimes I have to take a moment to appreciate how lucky I am to have the opportunity to do this every year!” Shepard, a Fishers resident, has been a part of the show since 1994. Wims joined the cast two years later. This is a particularly sentimental year for Wims, who is co-hosting the show with Shepard one last time before moving out-of-state with her family. “I was hired in 1996 as one of the dancers, ”Wims exclaimed. “I was

thrilled. I hadn’t done a Christmas show in several years and, being crazy about Christmas, I couldn't wait. I loved that it was a revue/ variety style show, filled with classic Christmas songs that I’d been singing since I was a kid. It was right up my alley.” Since then, she’s taken just three years off when she had her children. Together, she and Kenny have played everything from romantic partners to rag dolls. “I will miss my friends, especially Kenny Shepard, the most,” she said. “Sharing the stage with him year after year makes this show so special. He is so dear to me. The combination of us together on the stage makes it magical.” “Plain and simple, Deb is the heart of Beef & Boards, especially the Christmas show,” Shepard said. “Deb and I know each other so well, and especially in the Christmas show, we can pick up where the other leaves off.”

INDY METRO / DECEMBER 2016 / TownePost.com

This year’s quartet of principal singers welcomes back Peter Scharbrough, Betsy Norton and Cara Statham Serber from the 2015 production. Kyle Durbin rounds out the quartet, returning to the show after an eight-year absence. The Beef & Boards Orchestra, led by musical director Kristy Templet, has its own time in the spotlight as it is featured onstage, playing throughout the production. A tribute to the military honors all who have served, and children will delight to tell Santa their most special wishes when they have the opportunity to meet him during intermission. A Beef & Boards Christmas is on stage for 34 performances through December 23 in the intimate space of Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre. Tickets range from $41 to $66 and include Chef Odell Ward’s holiday buffet and select beverages. Parking is always free. For reservations, call the box office at 317.872.9664 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays. AVON WRITER PENS FIRST CHILDREN’S BOOK Writer / Kara Kavensky Photographer / Darren Boston

“Daddy is going to be here to get you off the bus today,” said Heather Chastain to her daughter Caroline one morning. “Where will you be?” is the first question Caroline asks immediately after learning of the new after-school plan. Before her mom can answer, she continues with, “You need to call Daddy and be sure he knows this and what to do.” Caroline is 5. “It is exhausting raising two independent women … one of whom is now a kindergartener and the other is almost 2,” says Heather. She and her husband Blake, who is the General Manager of Management Recruiters out of Zionsville, celebrate their daughters each and every day. As soon as Caroline could speak, what came out was hilarious. Heather, an Emmy-winning news producer and writer, took detailed notes. Heather knew she needed an outlet to share these adorable gems, and by using an app called Little Hoots, she turned Caroline’s statements into cute memes and posted them to Facebook. Soon Heather had built a large following. “Word got out, literally

… my mom’s friends and friends of my friends were sending me friend requests with notes like, ‘Your daughter is so funny!’” shares Heather. Another fan wrote to her, “Oh my gosh, Heather, Caroline is hysterical. Keep it coming!” “Once when Caroline was about 2½, I told her we were going to Target,” shares Heather of an early example. “Her response was, ‘Great! I need a few things!’” While Heather’s parenting is an overwhelmingly positive experience, she feels it’s healthy to share little bits of the less-thandesirable moments, such as the screaming fits. “This girl belongs on stage,” says Heather of Caroline. But before Caroline may appear on stage, she is already in print. “Caroline Girls” is the first children’s book penned by Heather. Of course, she has plenty of material from Caroline. Heather has written five stories in total so far, and “Caroline Girls” is the first in the series to be published. “It’s cathartic for me to write. I love it,” shares Heather. It took a while for Heather to share them with her husband. She felt they were personal and held them close to her heart. When she did finally share them, Blake responded positively.

28 / AVON MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2016 / AvonMagazine.com

“These are good,” said Blake immediately upon reading them. Heather responded, “Of course you like them. You’re my husband.” “No, these are really good,” Blake stated with the utmost sincerity. Heather set out to have a positive impact on the world and realized the best way for her is through children. The book is about the freedom of being accepted, no matter what your mood is that day or what you wear. The emphasis is about kindness and inclusivity. There are illustrations where a Caroline girl is in a soccer uniform, in a wheelchair, wearing a tutu or shown with braces on their teeth. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. “I receive comments and reviews that little girls insert their own name instead of Caroline, and that is the whole point!” shares Heather, who is all about empowering young girls. “And now that my youngest is almost 2, I am feeling a bit of pressure to write Baby Kate stories, so we will see how that goes.” “Anyone with a heart of gold can be a Caroline girl is what I am told…” “Caroline Girls” is for sale on Amazon and from her website, carolinegirls.com.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT AMERICAN LEGION POST 145 4812 E Main St. Avon, IN 46123 317-386-8911 avonlegion.org

AVON AMERICAN LEGION COMMANDER MIKE WELSH After we sat down, I shared with Welsh this was my first time inside an American Legion post. “A lot of people have never been inside an American Legion post,” he said. “A lot of our community doesn’t understand what the Legion is all about or that they might be eligible to join as one of our Sons of the Legion or an Auxiliary Member.”

Writer / Heather Chastain

As I walked up to the doors of the Avon American Legion Post 145 one bright, fall morning, it occurred to me: as a child of the ‘80s, with no immediate military in my family, I’ve never been inside an American Legion building. It’s an organization that’s never been on my radar. I was greeted by a kind man who took me to meet Avon American Legion Commander Mike Welsh. Immediately I was struck by the pride Welsh took in the new facility. In December, the Avon American Legion will celebrate its one-year anniversary in its new building, after relocating to 4812 E. Main St., due to bridge construction on Ind. 267 and U.S. 36.

Sons of the Legion members include males of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the U.S. military and were eligible for American Legion membership. American Legion Auxiliary is a women’s group proud to be the largest women’s patriotic service organization in the world. “Many people think American Legion posts are places were old soldiers come and talk about old war stories, but we are much, much more than that,” Welsh said. “We look at ourselves to be a service to the veterans and the community.” The Legion focuses heavily on its veteran and homeless veteran programs. “We want to help them with needs they have when they come back home and to make sure they always feel welcomed back into the community.” An army veteran involved in stateside AvonMagazine.com / DECEMBER 2016 / AVON MAGAZINE / 33

support during the Vietnam War, Welsh understands the pain many veterans felt coming home and not receiving a hospitable welcome. “After the Vietnam War, soldiers didn’t get the welcoming they deserved,” he said. “We want to make sure that never, ever happens again. I think that’s the most important. Every week, the Legion collects blankets and pillowcases for homeless veterans, and it collects canned food donations and toiletries, as well. The organization also actively donates to area organizations, including Boy Scouts of America, Sheltering Wings, the Sea Cadets, and it partners with Blue Star Salute. In September, 2016, the Legion was able to donate more than $8,200 to Isabel Jackson, a girl with cerebral palsy whose grandfather is a veteran and a legionnaire. Welsh hopes more people in the community will come out and visit the post. To encourage public awareness, the Sons of the American Legion host a breakfast the last Saturday of every month. The breakfast is open to the public. To learn more about the Avon American Legion visit www.avonlegion.org.

MISTY EYES ANIMAL CENTER OPENS IN AVON The new Misty Eyes Animal Center in Avon is a dream come true for two co-founders, who began their animal rescue mission five years ago. Cherie Fox and Renee Harlor first opened Misty Eyes in Brownsburg in 2011 and have been renting the building, but are proud to say they purchased the new facility.

“So many dogs come to us that don’t know how to live in homes, Fox explained. “They were either abused or mistreated … they simply don’t have any life skills. This building will give us a chance to work with the dogs and acclimate them to home life. Some dogs have no concept of stairs, or panic when they put their paws on different flooring. This Real Life Building will give us a chance to work with animals on a daily basis to prepare them for their new home.”

“We outgrew our Brownsburg location in about six months. Animals were out in the lobby. But this new location will give us the space to rescue more animals,” said Fox.

Harlor and Fox believe more space will provide more opportunity. They hope to be able to open the facility to the public six days a week, as well as hire paid employees.

Harlor said they have saved more than 1,000 animals, but have turned away hundreds, largely because they lacked the space.

“We have a great leadership team of volunteers that allow us to offer free humane programs and teach pet responsibility and kindness to all living things,” Harlor said.

Writer / Heather Chastain

The new Avon location, located on Dan Jones Road south of U.S. 36, boasts more than three acres and will house multiple buildings, which are to be developed in phases. The first building, a remodeled, foreclosed home, will become the administration building. The second phase will be a building to house cats. Harlor said they will be able to take up to 50 cats in their new location. The third building will be for dogs, giving Misty Eyes the capacity to accept 50 dogs, as well as continue its foster program. The new dog area will be outfitted with suites in the nearly 10,000 sq. ft. of space. The new Misty Eyes Animal Center will have a “Real Life Building” and a tranquility garden. Fox’s eyes lit up as she spoke about the Real Life Building, which is modeled after the Taylortown, Louisiana, Real Life Building, where she lived for a year after helping rescue animals in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

They hope to offer pet training, as well. Harlor and Fox are adamant in their belief that animals are not disposable; therefore, they have plans beyond the new facility. They want to take their business plan to other counties, as well, to demonstrate how government and non-profit organizations can work together. “The Hendricks County euthanasia rate was 77 percent when Misty Eyes opened,” Fox said. “It’s now 7 percent. While we can’t take sole credit for this decrease, we did help lower it. It is possible for two entities to work hand in hand.” Misty Eyes Animal Center relies on dedicated volunteers and contributions from the community to fulfill its mission. To learn more about how you can get involved, visit www.mistyeyes.org.

SURVIVING THE FLU… The flu shot may be the most effective way to prevent or reduce the impact of influenza during the yearly flu season. But it is not always convenient. Just ask the Ritchie family. “I work in healthcare so we are required to get yearly flu shots,” says Natalie Ritchie. “My son Zachary was an October baby, so he gets his flu vaccine during his annual check-up. It’s not as easy with our daughter, Sabrina, who sees her pediatrician each spring. Or my husband, who doesn’t have access to flu shots through his job.” When the Ritchie’s children were infants, the family asked everyone around the kids to be vaccinated for the flu. “The best way to protect the kids is to make sure everyone else around them is protected from the flu, too,” Ritchie says. Despite knowing the importance of flu vaccines, the Ritchie kids are growing and life continues to get more hectic. It’s easy for a family’s flu shot priority to slip. “My kids are in daycare full time,” Ritchie says. “If it’s going around, I figure someone here is going to get it.”

works with these populations should also receive the vaccine in order to help protect the people around them. Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe illness, and can even lead to death. The flu is different from a cold and usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of the following symptoms: feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, fatigue and more. Some people may even experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, though this is thought to be more common in children than adults. “We are not trying to eliminate the possibility of children getting the flu by encouraging flu shots,” says Dr. Rebecca Dixon, Riley Pediatric Hospitalist and Chief of Pediatrics at IU Health West Hospital. “We are trying to avoid the complications of the flu: secondary bacterial infection, exacerbation of underlying illnesses such as asthma, extreme dehydration, and even death. None of us want our children to get sick, and most of us would say we would rather be sick ourselves than see our children feel awful. But even more than that, we would never want our children to be severely harmed by something we could have prevented.”

And that is exactly what happened recently as the flu bug made its way around the entire family. Early statistics suggest that this year’s flu season could be as severe as last year. When facing a foe like the flu, a strong offense is the best defense. The influenza vaccine, or “flu shot,” should be combined with frequent hand washing, staying away from others if you’re sick, coughing into your elbow rather than your hands, maintaining a healthy diet and getting enough sleep. “We strongly recommend that everyone age 6 months and older get their annual flu vaccine,” says Jane Forni, manager of infection prevention at IU Health West Hospital. “Physician’s offices and pharmacies began providing flu shots in September. Since, it takes about two weeks for your body to build up its immune response to the flu, the sooner you get your flu shot the better. But it’s not too late.” Children and people over age 65 have a high risk of developing serious symptoms from the flu and should be vaccinated as soon as possible. This group also includes those with asthma, diabetes or chronic lung disease. Anyone who lives or 36 / AVON MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2016 / AvonMagazine.com

Ritchie learned the family was battling the flu when toddler Sabrina was at her pediatrician’s office. Dr. Jason Cosgrove diagnosed the flu and started antiviral medication. If you think you have the flu, it’s important to see your primary care physician as soon as possible as there is a short window for antiviral medication to be most effective.

FOODS THAT HELP YOU FIGHT COLD & FLU

The timing of flu season is unpredictable and can vary from year to year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Flu activity most commonly peaks in January or February. However, seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and continue as late as May. Each year, more than 200,000 people in the United States are hospitalized by the flu. The Ritchie’s get flu vaccines early in the season now. “I know we have to make it a priority,” Ritchie says, “or it will slip through the cracks again.” Flu shots are available at primary-care offices and select retail pharmacies throughout Hendricks County, including the pharmacy at IU Health West Hospital. While supplies last, low cost flu shots are available through the Hendricks County Board of Health during scheduled walk-in clinics. Call (317) 745-9222 for more information. JACK’S DONUTS Writer / Heather Chastain

Living in Avon got a little sweeter this past September. When Jack’s Donuts opened September 4, people came out in droves. “Opening day, the line wrapped throughout the entire store, out the door and down the side walk,” said manager Tim Roberts. The store sold out of donuts that day, but that didn’t stop Roberts and his business partner Spencer King from standing outside the shop, greeting their new customers and asking them to come back the next day. In their first three weeks of business, they sold out five times – once was a weekday. Roberts said people commonly ask, “Why can’t you to just go back there and make some more?” It turns out that’s easier said than done. Each Jack’s Donut is made by hand which is why no two donuts are exactly the same. In fact, that was one of the tenants the original

Jack of Jack’s Donuts required. “Jack said he didn’t want all the donuts to look alike,” said Roberts. There are no machines producing the pastries. The chefs come in at 9 p.m. to begin making donuts for the next day. The chefs finish at 6 a.m. “To make 250 yeast donuts takes about 45 minutes,” said Roberts. During the week, their chefs are making 1,400-1,500 donuts a day. On the weekends, it’s between 3,000-4,000. See the sidebar to learn more about the donut making process.

Jack’s Donuts began in 1961 in Greencastle. Jack is Robert’s father-in-law. “My wife worked there as a kid. The five other siblings did too,” said Roberts. The first franchise of Jack’s Donuts began in Jack’s Donuts doesn’t do second day donuts, Fishers in 2013. GEIST'S NEWEST PACER THADDEUS YOUNG

Writer / Pat Carlini

It’s hard to believe the laid back, almost shy Thaddeus Young that I sat down with one day after practice is actually the aggressive 6’8”power forward for the Indiana Pacers, and not only is he new to the team, he is also our new neighbor here in Geist. “A realtor took us all over,” says Thaddeus, who moved here in June. “But we just kept coming back to the house on Geist —we just love it!”

While he was born in warm New Orleans, his career has taken him to teams based in colder locations, such as the Philadelphia 76ers from 2007 to 2014, Minnesota Timberwolves in 2014 and 2015 and, most recently, the Brooklyn Nets in 2015 and 2016. “Brooklyn was tough, “ says Thaddeus, shaking his head. “There was so much to do all around you, but it seems like it takes two to three hours to get anywhere.”

At first he feared it may be too far from downtown, but soon learned it is not a bad commute, and a few fellow teammates also enjoy their homes on Geist.

His wife, Shekinah, has been by his side all the way. The couple met in high school in Memphis, where she is the founder and owner of a successful beauty shop/blow out bar. They have two young boys, and Thaddeus says he enjoys his downtime with his family.

“What I enjoy is just looking out at the water,” laughs Thaddeus. “I don’t like going out there when it gets a little cold.”

“I’m a pretty simple guy,” laughs Thaddeus. “I enjoy my time on the couch before the kids get home.” INDY METRO / DECEMBER 2016 / TownePost.com

Thaddeus says his favorite dinner is pasta and he prefers a drink now and then, but not really wine or beer. “My dad used to say beer is an acquired taste, and for some reason, at 28 years old, I still haven’t acquired the taste for beer,” laughs Thaddeus. He has, however, acquired a taste for lakeside living, and now he and his family are enjoying their new home on Geist reservoir. Welcome Thaddeus Young and family! LIFE’S BEST MOMENTS ARE WORTH REMEMBERING Writer / Kara Kavensky

MemoryVentures’ motivation and mission is to help people share and preserve their best moments in life. MemoryVentures relocated from Los Angeles to the north side of Indianapolis in 2015, bringing its core group of employees with them. “It became evident that if we wanted to experience growth as a company, relocation was required,” states founder and CEO Anderson Schoenrock. “The economic benefits to our company and to our employees were worth moving to Central Indiana.” At the time MemoryVentures relocated to Indiana, it had just been named the eighth fastest growing company in Los Angeles. Not only has MemoryVentures relocated to Indiana with existing employees, it has nearly doubled its workforce to a total of 54, with plans for additional hires. Preserving and converting outdated media is a dominant segment of MemoryVentures’ business. Its conversion method is built upon a proprietary technology platform. So, at heart, it is a hightech company. “Through this platform we deliver an exceptional customer experience in a very personalized manner while maintaining the flexibility and scalability required to sustain hyper growth,” Schoenrock says.

MemoryVentures understands the responsibility of caring for one-of-a-kind family treasures. From the moment a package enters its facility, the contents are constantly monitored by video. “From the time the package is opened, its inventory is catalogued and each object given a unique barcode for tracking. We know exactly where every item is at any time,” Lopez says. In addition to preservation, MemoryVentures also creates large prints on canvas, murals, decals and even images for corn hole games. For the holidays, MemoryVentures has a special on its Heartland Box, which is a self-contained kit for digitizing a certain number of items. “The Heartland Box is designed as a stand-alone gift, or used to create one,” shares Lopez, who recommends visiting www. heartlandbox.com for details. ArtsyCanvas.com provides more amazing gift ideas, with personalized photos turned into high-quality works of art from digital images.

The MemoryVentures office is filled with reel-to-reel tapes, slides, negatives, VHS tapes and other outdated media storage options.

While its website serves as the main portal for the business, MemoryVentures welcomes walk-in customers who can see for themselves how their precious memories will be handled, from the time the package enters the door until returned with a USB thumb drive containing their treasured memories (or any other product the customer ordered).

“We take special care of the memories that each family is wishing to preserve,” says Director of Sales Danny Lopez.

“Please come by, we are located just a few doors down from the Indy Premier club soccer indoor facility in Fishers,” Lopez says.

INDY ELEVEN'S WINNING STRATEGY Writer / Kara Kavensky Photography provided

What a run. What a game. What a team. The Indy Eleven wrapped up its third season by remaining unbeaten at home and making it to the championship game, where they lost on penalty kicks to their North American Soccer League rival, the New York Cosmos. Within three short years, the Indy Eleven has accomplished what seemed nearly impossible, but team owner Ersal Ozdemir is used to achieving the impossible. “Growing up in Turkey, soccer is more than a sport, it is part of the culture,” explained

Ozdemir, CEO of Keystone Group LLC. “Like in so many other countries around the world, in Turkey you are kicking a soccer ball as soon as you can walk, and you are outside playing soccer until the sun goes down – and maybe even later. That’s how my passion for soccer developed, and I brought that with me when I arrived in Indiana to attend Purdue University, where I continued to play on the school’s club team.” Ozdemir’s quest to bring professional soccer to Indianapolis began as a grassroots effort. He was relentless in his marketing efforts to the soccer moms and millennials. With so many area youth playing the sport, and with soccer’s increasing popularity across the U.S., Ozdemir knew

Indianapolis was ripe for a team. “With a world-class city, sports and entertainment are part of the package,” says Indy Eleven President Jeff Belskus. Belskus spent most of his professional career with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, so he knows a thing or two about sporting events in our city. Ozdemir pulled Belskus from early retirement in January of 2016 to lead the Indy Eleven. “I’ve been in the Indianapolis area for almost 20 years and have seen it become the best city in the country in regards to using sports as a cultural and economic driver,” Ozdemir says. At the same time, Indianapolis is becoming more globally-

"WITH A WORLD-CLASS CITY, SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT ARE

focused and diverse, with all of these factors making soccer a natural fit.” He continues, “The idea to bring soccer back to Indianapolis at the professional level was something I wanted to do for the city for a while, but I also know there were several factors that had to fall into place to make it something that would last. The passion with which the community and our supporters have embraced Indy Eleven in such a short amount of time gives me hope and proves that the club has done a lot of things the right way and will be around for generations to enjoy.” With the state legislature heading into a budget year, it’s a safe bet the Indy Eleven will have a strong presence in the statehouse as they push for the necessary legislation to build their own stadium southwest of Lucas Oil. “Mike Carroll Stadium is less than ideal for us because of its age and temporary nature,” says Belskus. “To continue our trend of improving fan experience, we feel it’s vital to have a high quality venue.

Mayor Joe Hogsett with Indy Eleven Owner, Ersal Ozdemir

“The new stadium could be built in Carmel or Fishers, but the vision is for Indianapolis. The excitement and support we have witnessed only continues to grow.” “The games are fun; there’s a bit of nostalgia in attending them. Perhaps it feels like college in a way, but with beer,” says Tony Bonacuse, Senior Vice President of Insurance Management Group, Indy Eleven season-ticket holder and close friend to Ozdemir. “The games are fun, family events, and the quality of the play has improved dramatically this year.”

Ozdemir is very visible at games. Hours before games begin, he is commonly found walking through the tailgating parties, where the fans adore him. Selfies, high-fives, fist bumps — Ozdemir is accessible. He will disappear near the end of the games to greet attendees as they leave the stadium. “Ersal is very hands-on and enjoys connecting with the Indy Eleven fan base,” says Bonacuse. “Ersal is so passionate about soccer, and loves being around others that enjoy the game as much as he does.” On a scale of 1 to 10, this team goes to Eleven. AVON HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY TEACHER REFEREES WRESTLING AT 2016 OLYMPICS Writer / Claire Rightley

Holding up the winning wrestler’s arm, Avon’s Zach Errett looked around at the roaring crowd and then up at his own image plastered on the massive television screen mounted above him. Errett, a wrestling coach and chemistry teacher at Avon High School, was refereeing an Olympic wrestling match at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Errett was one of two wrestling referees selected from the United States. In addition to Rio, Errett was chosen as a referee at the 2012 Olympics in London. He said he hopes to be in Tokyo in 2020, as well. “Every part is a four-year cycle,” Errett said, “so I wouldn’t say you start over again. But you certainly look at the evaluations from that tournament, along with what went on throughout the course of the year, and then you kind of start back over again and start working through the tournaments. So I’ll have to go to tournaments again starting next year, and from there be evaluated and certainly hopefully have the chance maybe to go again in 2020 in Tokyo.” Errett certainly isn’t new to the world of wrestling. He was first exposed to the sport as a child, and it has continued to be a part of his life as an adult. “I started it when I was 5 years old and wrestled all the way through high school,” he said. “I didn’t wrestle in college, but I did start coaching about a year after college.” Not only did he begin wrestling at a young age, but he began refereeing young too.

my first national tournament at the age of 16. I’ve been doing that along with wrestling as well, so I’ve been involved with wrestling for the past 33 years.” All of his years of experience led him to refereeing at the Olympics. He said the process of being selected as a referee for the Olympics is long but worth it. “You have to have a certain category, so you go to tournaments and get evaluated, and if you reach a certain level category, then you have the opportunity to be selected for the Olympics,” Errett said. “I’ve been fortunate to be at that level, and I was fortunate to be selected as one of the referees to go.” Errett said it’s an honor to go to the Olympics representing the United States. “I’m going there as a representation of them, and I want to make sure I’m doing the best job that I can,” he said. In addition to his role in the Rio games as a referee, he said he enjoyed getting to view other sporting events, which is not something he’s been able to do before. “For the first time, I actually had a chance to go watch another sporting event,” Errett said. “Typically, we don’t get tickets to go to any other events. I happened to go with some friends from another country who were going to watch beach volleyball.” Errett said he enjoyed the trip overall and will continue refereeing tournaments in hopes of returning to the Olympics.

“Going to referee the Olympics is certainly an honor,” he said. “I’m certainly very thankful for the opportunity and for the people who “I started refereeing when I was in middle school,” Errett said. “I did helped me to get to that point.” 50 / AVON MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2016 / AvonMagazine.com

She began her career in Joplin, Missouri, where she met her husband. Then they moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Monroe, Louisiana, before returning home to the Midwest. “We really picked Avon on a whim during a whirlwind houseshopping trip. We loved the community feel we immediately recognized in Avon, yet the proximity to the city. It has been a perfect fit for our family,” said Criscuolo. “Avon really feels like home for me and my family, which is saying a lot since we’ve moved so much over the last decade. Our church, Our Shepherd Lutheran, has been so welcoming, and each person I meet in Avon quickly feels like a friend,” she said. Those feelings prompted her to request covering stories for WISH-TV in Hendricks County and Avon specifically. “I knew Avon was an active, progressive, positive part of central Indiana that wasn’t getting the attention it deserved in the local news. I’ve never struggled to find things happening here since that time,” said Criscuolo.

However, Criscuolo had the tables turned on her when “The Hulk” Lou Ferrigno broke her own personal story during a live TV interview. While Criscuolo interviewed Ferrigno who was in town for Wizard World Comic Con in 2015, he said, “And congratulations on your little …” and touched her stomach. “Oh, my goodness! What an experience. Meeting Lou Ferrigno made for a really fun morning that February day. He was really sweet and interested in my life and career, so we had a great conversation. I told him I had one son and confided in him that another was on the way. My co-workers, who are some of my closest friends, knew about it, but we had not announced it yet. It became a huge social media sensation and surely made for a fun memory,” said Criscuolo. Criscuolo and her husband live with her mom, Deb, and their two boys, ages 3 and 1. “Graham and Everett have taught me how to unplug and really live in the moment. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for the future of our family!”
