he first time I met Gus Dagres, I was a customer at Opa. The restaurant had been open about a week, and our food had just been served. He came over to see if my family and I were happy with our dishes. I was examining my food as I tend to do because I’m a picky eater, and I was trying something well out of my comfort zone when Gus decided my food was not prepared to his standards. He took it away and brought me a new, better-prepared dish. He couldn’t have been more apologetic. It was in that moment I knew Opa would be a huge success and a place I would be patronizing regularly. Open nearly two years now, it seems as if I’m not wrong. I had the opportunity to sit down in his authentic restaurant recently to talk about what’s made Opa such a success. Gus says customers are flocking to his restaurant not only because of the food, but because of the atmosphere. “Inside, it’s like our customers are going on a little vacation,” the soft-spoken restaurant owner said smiling. “We worked very hard on the outside and the inside. We wanted people to feel like they were having an authentic Greek experience with the food and the music and the murals on the wall,” said Gus.

clean, not too much traffic, quiet and close to everything,” Gus said smiling. “When I first moved to Avon 10 years ago, I wanted to do something a little easier. Something that wouldn’t be open many hours,” Gus said about his decision to open Hotcakes Emporium and Pancake House in Avon, Southport and at 86th and Ditch. At first, the restaurants closing at 3 p.m. seemed like a great working environment for Gus, but he quickly realized he was bored and needed something more. “I always wanted to do something more, something close to my house, something different,” said Gus. So he decided to open an authentic restaurant with ties to his heritage. The recipes prepared are from his grandmother and mother. “She is so proud because I found people who know how to eat! I go home once a year, and when I do, my mother is always giving me different recipes,” Gus said chuckling softly. Even though his grandmother is no longer alive, he knows she would be as proud as his mother. “I opened this place, so I could enjoy it. I wanted to move people. This place is always on my mind. And my mind is on quality. We only use clean cooking, fresh herbs and fresh olive oil. We prepare everything here,” said Gus. Even the name Opa extends to his Greek heritage and feelings about the restaurant. Opa is a Greek word used to express happy emotion. It’s often used during a wedding or when people are dancing. Often a plate smashing accompanies the gleeful “Opa!” It can also be used to call for attention, an invitation to join in a circle dance or a cry as the flame is lit on the saganaki, a melted cheese dish that is traditionally flambéd at the table by the waiter. He said many customers have shared how much they enjoyed the Greek experience. “Recently we had a table of 12. They stayed three to three-and-a-half hours. They enjoyed good food, good company, Greek music … but then they walked outside and said, ‘Oh yeah, I’m still in Avon.’ Those kinds of stories make me really proud of what I’ve done,” said Gus. A man not just providing a memorable dining experience, he’s also responsible for the construction of the restaurant. “I do both. It’s a lot, but I’m getting so many rewards from the customers. To see how much they like it and how many are coming back, it means a lot,” said Gus.
The owner takes a great deal of responsibility in the food prepared. “I believe whatever you eat is going into your blood. I would never serve something I didn’t want to eat,” Gus said firmly. “It’s a lot of hours, but what I do is worth it. I love it. It’s not easy doing what I do and to keep things running the way I do, but it’s worth it.” His hard work has paid off. Customers named Opa the #1 Authentic Greek Restaurant in Indianapolis. “That’s proof that I’m not just in it for me. I’m in it for the customers,” said Gus. Many customers are requesting that Gus open more locations. He says he is considering opening additional Opa restaurants on the north and south sides, but nothing is official. He was quite coy with his expansion plans. “I don’t want to say too much. I don’t want to read that I’ve said something and then realize I said too much. I need to check in with myself, and then we’ll see,” said Gus. For Gus, his eating philosophy is simple: “Eat healthy. Eat Greek. Live longer!”
Gus is a Greek immigrant from Argos, Greece, a small city in Argolis, Peloponnese, Greece, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Gus came to the United States when he was 18 years old. His entire family came as well. His parents stayed a few years and then returned to Greece. Gus opened several establishments in Chicago, including a nightclub, a few gyro places and a couple of restaurants. After his separation from his wife, he moved to Avon. “I like it here. GIRLS NITE IN: AVON WOMAN CREATES A PROGRAM TO ENLIGHTEN AND EMPOWER TEEN GIRLS. Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing
It was a typical high school teaching day when Avon resident and Brownsburg choral instructor Jimmelyn Garland Rice took a break to use the restroom. When she stepped into the bathroom, however, she heard the disturbing sound of a student purging in an adjacent stall. Then, as she was washing her hands, she overhead a student talking about her abusive stepfather and another confiding to a friend that she might be pregnant. The following week Rice found a girl in the restroom cutting her arms with a razor blade. Compelled to do something, Rice started taking her breaks in the bathroom rather than the faculty lounge so she could befriend a host of lost, lonely, struggling girls. The issues facing these girls included addictions, eating disorders, self-harm, pregnancy and toxic relationships. As time passed, Rice couldn’t shake these stories from her head or her heart, nor did she want to. She desperately desired to show
these girls they were wanted, needed, valued, and loved. That’s when she decided to host Girls Nite In, where she could provide a safe place for teen girls to congregate, build healthy relationships, and learn to make better choices. Rice hoped for a dozen girls at her first meeting, but instead 55 attended. In the eight years since, approximately 1,700 girls have participated in Girls Night In. What was initially a local gathering has grown greatly, with chapters popping up around the United States and the world. While Rice aims to introduce Girls Nite In to other states and countries, she remains focused on enlightening and empowering local girls, providing the tools they need to sidestep selfdestructive behavior. Aimed at middle school, high school, and college girls, Rice stresses that Girls Nite In is not a youth group.

“These meetings are raw, real, and candid because, frankly, if they weren’t, girls in this culture would get up and leave” -Jimmelyn Garland Rice “My target GNI girl is one who will likely never darken the door of a church,” says Rice, who notes that the girls predominantly turn to their peers for guidance. “I want to reach those who might never have a chance to hear truth or find hope.”
“Because nobody relates to perfection,” she says. Every Girls Nite In attendee receives a T-shirt and workbook. Attendees also share a meal at the start of the event. Rice says this is essential as it may be the only food some of the girls get the entire day.
Each two-hour Girls Nite In event includes a speaker from the community who shares her personal story about the highlighted topic, which always addresses “matters of the heart.” Topics change annually, “We meet their physical needs before we address their emotional though certain topics resonate with the teen population every year, and spiritual ones,” says Rice. “And there is no cost involved with including body image, toxic relationships, and sex/self-respect. attending. If there were, the very girls who need our program the most wouldn’t be able to come.” “I keep my finger on the pulse of teen culture to assess girls’ current struggles,” Rice says. Rice says that school superintendents tell her that although they daily see students destroying their lives, they don’t know how to After the speaker concludes, participants break into small groups help them, and that’s where Girls Nite In fits in. to chat. Before closing, Rice shares practical coping skills and principles of truth that are meant to energize, inspire, and uplift. “This program is a bridge to those who need it,” says Rice, “and I’m honored, humbled, and happy to provide that bridge.” “These meetings are raw, real, and candid because, frankly, if they weren’t, girls in this culture would get up and leave,” says Rice, who For more information about Girls Nite In, or if you would like to act acknowledges that the participants crave honesty and vulnerability as a sponsor or make a donation, email info@girlsnitein.org or call in their coaches and volunteers. KAREN MANGIA
Creates Success WITH LESS
Writer / Kara Kavensky Photographer / Amy Unger
Karen Mangia, Vice President of Customer and Market Insights for SalesForce, recently discovered an old email exchange with a friend stating how “email was ridiculous and it would never catch on.” This is laughable now, but back then, the most radical idea was a handheld cell phone for talking, not texting. Since her college days, Mangia knew she wanted to work with customer data and took a nontraditional path to a tech career.
Karen enjoyed the constant change with AT&T, but Cisco was growing and she saw opportunity. Through a series of building blocks and choices at Cisco, Karen’s job ultimately transformed into what she had desired since college. She was the Nielsen ratings for Cisco. “I managed the annual survey process to customers,” says Karen, who performs a very similar job at SalesForce. “I assessed what was working and what wasn’t, where is the risk and sought market opportunities.
“I have been fascinated by why people make the choices they make, what are the trends, study the data points and weave together the story,” says Karen, who earned her undergrad and masters degrees at Ball State. “I wanted to work for Nielsen, until I discovered they were located in Iowa.”
“Like with anyone’s career path, every step is additive to the process as a whole. The steps lead someone somewhere. The technical data of customer feedback helps us figure out what to build next, what our customers want.”
Building her wheelhouse, Karen dug into project management and sales with AT&T before being recruited to Cisco.
Disruption is a concept Mangia has welcomed into her life time and again. Not all of the disruptions have been welcome, but all provided learning experiences. INDY METRO / JANUARY 2017 / TownePost.com
From a personal perspective, one pivotal moment in Karen’s life was backing out of a wedding after the invitations had been sealed and stamped. The longest car ride of Karen’s life was sitting in silence with her mother after her bridal shower on the way back to Karen’s home. Her mom pulled into a parking space and Karen started crying and told her mom not to unload the gifts. They would need to be returned. “The voice inside my head was screaming, DO NOT MARRY THIS GUY,” shares Karen. “By listening to the inner voice inside my head, I disrupted my entire life course and took a detour, which was my intended path all along.” The next major disruption occurred while Karen was working at Cisco. She was noticing signs something was not quite right. In her early 30s and experiencing success on many levels, she was displaying signs of fatigue. She justified her lowerthan-normal energy level as a result of
recently moved to a new house. Yet more symptoms were appearing. She told herself stories to explain the unwelcome signs her body was exhibiting. Karen’s health was in decline and she was doing her best to deny it. She became unrecognizable to herself in the mirror. Her hair was falling out, she had gained weight, her skin was yellow, and her once-vibrant blue eyes had turned grey. But she kept pushing herself as if nothing was wrong. She also started to forget where she placed things. “It was not until I couldn't remember my brother's name that I thought, ‘Oh my gosh. I can't ignore this any more,’” she shares. It was three and a half years before she was diagnosed with pesticide poisoning. Even in the midst of her health crisis, she did not slow down until she was forced to. She had to heal. Karen had to pay attention to what her inner voice — and her body — was telling her. “The first step is discovering what pushed the snowball down the mountain,” states Dr. Kevin Logan, Mangia’s physician. “Then a personalized prescription for diet and lifestyle changes are essential to the process of bringing the body back into balance.” It takes many lines of code to have a program perform as designed, and it takes time for your actions to propagate. The same applies to your health, especially when a body is in crisis. In her book Success With Less, Karen details her journey back to health. It’s not the physical healing that is dominant in the book, but more the emotional element that was her trigger. This healing opportunity impacted Karen’s approach to life. She was forced to audit her circumstances and figure out for herself what her idea of success looks like and how it needed to change.
“It's so easy to look at everyone else's life and find that success is easy for other people. ‘If I only had the right education, the right boss, the right job.’ But success is available to everyone,” she says. “The key piece is determining what success means to you and calibrating to that. Because when it is that definition, it is available to everyone. There is no key to a secret club. You create it.”

A more circuitous and unpredictable path could not have been had by Sun King President Bob Whitt with regards to his career, nor a more enjoyable one.
Bob’s previous work experience included Senator Lugar’s presidential campaign in 1995 and1996, where he worked with his wife, Ellen, a lawyer who spent 25 years in politics and public service at the state and federal level. She is now Executive Director for The Exchange at Marian University. During the campaign, Bob planned many rallies, fundraisers and additional events in the key primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire.
“The job I am in and the job I just left are both dream jobs,” says Bob. “I am fortunate enough to experience two in one lifespan.” Prior to Sun King, Bob served 11 years as the Executive Director of White River State Park, having been appointed by thenGovernor Mitch Daniels and reappointed by Mike Pence. The 250-acre downtown Indianapolis park includes the Indianapolis Zoo, White River Gardens, Eiteljorg Museum, Indiana State Museum, IMAX Theater, NCAA National Headquarters, The Lawn music venue, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians), Military Park and many other green spaces. “I was essentially the landlord, and was well prepared without knowing it in advance, as I understand event and property management,” shares Bob, who had worked for years as a commercial real estate
He started his career in business with some of the best sales and management training available at Xerox Corporation. He earned his MBA at University of Maryland while working for Xerox in Washington, D.C. The combination of his later commercial real estate development and brokerage experience, his personal obsession with food, wine, craft beer and the “locally grown and made” movement, his significant event experience and community/political involvement made him the ideal candidate for what the Sun King team needed, regardless of his lack of actual craft brewery experience. INDY METRO / JANUARY 2017 / TownePost.com
As part of the company’s initial push to help the community and create brand awareness, Sun King began popping up at local events in 2009. Bob noticed they seemed to be appearing all over the place. Sun King was located in downtown Indianapolis, so Bob dropped by and introduced himself. Walking into Sun King Brewery today looks dramatically different than it did at that time. The growth of Sun King has been exponential. The company exceeded its fiveyear production and sales goals within its first 18 months in business, creating a push for the state to raise the limit for allowable craft brewery production. “Originally, there were only a few tanks in that section,” says Bob, waving his hand towards the corner of the building. “I would occasionally come in, hang out, drink a beer, and get to know founders and brewers Clay Robinson and Dave Colt, plus partners Andy Fagg, Steve Koers, and Clay’s father, Omar.” As the relationship grew, Bob discovered they shared similar business philosophies regarding how a business should run responsibly, commitment to the community, and respect and treatment of employees. When Sun King first approached Bob
about replacing Omar, who was retiring as president, it came as a shock.
ties to the community. My vote was to go for it.”
“As Bob was considering making this major change, the thing that seemed to be holding him back was just how much he loved his work at White River State Park,” shares Ellen. “Even so, the opportunity at Sun King was the chance of a lifetime to join another team of extraordinarily talented and committed individuals and to add value to an already amazing organization with strong
Since joining the Sun King team in late April, 2016, Bob has worked every job in the brewery, starting in the tasting room. He’s traveled with the sales staff, worked the canning line, and has witnessed firsthand how all the moving parts work in sync. He described it as “Undercover Boss” without the disguise. Dave walked Bob through the brewing process by brewing a batch

of Bitchin’ Camaro with him at the Sun King Tap Room & Small Batch Brewery in Fishers. “Our downtown Indy brewery is somewhat automated, but in Fishers one measures everything. It’s very hands on,” says Bob. “I’ve also been out with the draft technicians cleaning the draft lines in restaurants, a key to quality with kegged beer, which often resides a significant distance from the taps.”

OUR HOUSE BEERS ARE AVAILABLE YEAR-ROUND AT OUR BREWERY AND THROUGHOUT CENTRAL INDIANA, IN BOTH CANS AND ON DRAFT.
“A lot of people were curious why Sun King chose to bring on a new president with no experience in the world of brewing. But as a company that is transitioning from scrappy start-up into a mature business there is a whole different set of skills that are necessary for success,” Clay says. “Bob’s background and connections throughout the community, combined with his passion for all things local and his desire to help make Indiana a great place to live, work, and play, made him a great fit for Sun King.” Since inception, the commitment to a quality product is evident in the thoughtful consideration of each product Sun King produces. For example, it took Dave and Clay two years of research and a significant financial investment to make Sunlight Cream Ale and Wee Mac Scottish Ale shelf stable at room temperature for grocery stores. For care in distribution, most beers would just be thrilled to have third-party sales and distribution. While Sun King does have distribution throughout the state of Indiana, they self-distribute within Marion County and regularly clean the lines from

To date, Sun King has more than 350 community partner organizations and a full team focused exclusively upon community development. Sun King’s goal is to become Indiana’s beer, with plans to extend outreach through festivals and events in the bordering cities of Louisville, Cincinnati and Chicago. The intention is not to sell beer out of state, but to create the demand for those residents in Kentucky, Ohio, and Illinois to cross the state line to buy Sun King. Bob refers to Dave and Clay as the visionary driving forces behind the company, its innovative concoctions, and the expansion into spirits. “One of the ideas presented in their original business plan was to expand into distilling,” INDY METRO / JANUARY 2017 / TownePost.com
shares Bob. “With the rapid growth, other elements took precedence so now we are able to move forward with liquor.” The distillery will be built from the ground up in the Midtown District of Carmel with a prime location on the Monon Trail between Main Street and the Palladium. Construction is set to begin during the first quarter of 2017 with hopes of opening before the end of the year. "I worked closely with Bob as Sun King developed its plans for building something unique along our Monon Trail,” says Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard. “I am consistently impressed with his vision and ideals for how he sees Sun King growing in the future. We're pleased he chose Carmel for this new direction and we are happy to be sharing in his success." Indiana’s beer may also soon be Indiana’s spirits. GENDER REVEAL A

here’s an exciting new trend among expecting families called gender reveal parties. If you’re asking yourself, “What’s a gender reveal party?” then you either don’t know anyone who’s expecting, you aren’t expecting or you live under a rock. A gender reveal party is a party to find out the gender of an expecting couple’s baby. Generally, gender reveal parties lie somewhere between the pregnancy

announcement and the baby shower. Thanks to social media, this trend is exploding with some good and bad reviews, but it’s a trend that is not going anywhere any time soon. Who is doing it? A lot of people. Gender reveal parties started popping up around 2011 with a simple cake you could cut into to find out reveal the baby’s gender: blue for boy and pink for girl. and even the whole world. Celebrities like Snooki, Dave Annable and Carrie Underwood, just to name a few, revealed their baby’s gender on national television or video to not only tell their families but the entire world. Other celebrities have used gender reveals on their Instagram and other social media pages. If you are invited to a gender reveal party, you should expect food and games, maybe even together. cookies or cupcakes either pink, blue or some neutral color. Games often include guessing the gender of what you think the baby might be, predicting the day of birth or learning old wives’ tales of boys versus girls. Finally, the reveal — is it a boy or a girl? If you are thinking of bringing a gift, it’s not necessary (unless it’s a shower and gender reveal in one). Thinking of throwing one? Let your sonographer know ahead of time that’s the plan, but you can always know and keep it a secret too. Bring an envelope if you don’t want to know and ask the sonographer to put the gender inside. At that point, you can give the envelope to a trusted friend or family member or give it directly to your baker/party planner. If you plan on doing a cake reveal, contact a local bakery and see if they accommodate your request.

WHAT IS ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE? IU HEALTH WEST NEUROLOGIST DISCUSSES THE BASICS OF DEMENTIA Every 66 seconds, someone in the United Sates is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. This degenerative disease of the brain is expected to claim even more lives as baby boomers approach age 65. It’s a prevalent disease, but one with many misconceptions. “Many patients ask me if they have Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, but Alzheimer’s is actually a form of dementia,” says Dr. James Fesenmeier, a neurologist at IU Health West Hospital. “In people over the age of 70, it’s the most common type of dementia.” Dementia is a general term for memory loss and other skill impairment severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease that causes irreversible damage in the brain. “Early on, Alzheimer’s disease shows up predominately as memory problems, but it’s not as simple as forgetting your keys or spacing an appointment,” Fesenmeier explains. “This disease significantly affects people’s ability to function. They’ll have difficulty following recipes, going to the
grocery store or making a list. Eventually, you can tell this person something - even something very important - and they’ll forget it.”
says. “Maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise and doing mentally stimulating activities may help older individuals prevent the development of the disease.”
While there are no current treatments or cures for Alzheimer’s, research is ongoing to determine why and how the disease damages cells within the brain. So far there is no definitive answer.
For family and friends of those living with the Alzheimer’s, Fesenmeier says to be supportive of the patient’s wishes and to keep an eye out for the emotional state of both the patient and his or her closest caregiver.
“The challenge with finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease is that we don’t completely understand what causes it,” Fesenmeier says. “We know there’s amyloid (protein) deposition in the brain when you look at the brain under the microscope, but whether or not preventing that occurrence is going to help the disease is unclear.”
“Sometimes the most difficult aspect is the impact on the non-affected older partner of someone living with the disease,” Fesenmeier says. “It’s overwhelming to take care of a spouse with Alzheimer’s disease, and it’s very important that family members support the spouse and give them the occasional break from 24/7 care.”
There are medications to help treat the disease’s symptoms, but they won’t stop or reverse its progression.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, by 2050 the number of people age 65 and older with this disease may nearly triple making it more and more likely that it will touch most of our lives.
“There is evidence of higher rates of For more information on support for Alzheimer’s Disease among people who smoke or have Type-2 diabetes,” Fesenmeier Alzheimer’s disease visit alz.org. 28 / AVON MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS CFO KURT HUMPHREY Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger
FORE! Look out, indeed, Avon, for Indianapolis Colts CFO Kurt Humphrey. A resident of Avon since1988 and member of the Colts organization since the team arrived in 1984, Humphrey spends as much of his free time as he can at Prestwick Country Club. He’s even part owner of the club. “Golfing is my favorite thing to do when I’m not working,” Humphrey says. He explains he never golfed much when he was married, or before that, instead spending most of his free time with his family. He adds, “I didn’t start playing avidly until 1999. Golf is a great way to get away from everything for four to five hours, be with your buddies, tell stories, and just have fun. I just love the camaraderie at Prestwick Country Club.” He adds, “There are lots of great guys there, and it’s just the right size of club. It’s also where I had my only
hole-in-one back in 2007. I live there on the eighth hole and can see my buddies out the sunroom when I’m not playing.”
coming back. His beloved Grandma Helen, whom he calls “My favorite person in the whole world,” earned that honor.
But before Avon and Prestwick came the Colts. After 32 years, Humphrey has made the football organization as much a part of his identity as golf and Avon. Growing up, however, it’s likely that living in a big city and working for a world class Super Bowl Champion team weren’t even on Humphrey’s radar.
Grandma Helen Berger, a warm, cheerful lady with an infectious, jolly laugh, was the bookkeeper at her family’s furniture store, J.C. Lorey Furniture. Known by all in town whom she greeted when they came in to the store, she played an enormous role in shaping Humphrey’s small-town values. However, she never realized she would serve as the inspiration for Humphrey’s career path.
Born in Evansville, Humphrey was 7 when he and his family moved to Muncie, where he spent the rest of his childhood and his college years at Ball State University. But his heart always remained in his mother’s hometown of Jasper, where the family visited regularly. A small, quiet town nestled in southwest Indiana, Jasper is a quaint, very close-knit community, rich with history and a predominantly German population. But it wasn’t Jasper’s charm that wormed its way into Humphrey’s heart and kept him 30 / AVON MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com
“I always had bookkeeping in the back of my mind as something I might want to do some day,” Humphrey says. That day happened during high school. Humphrey’s mom, Sarah Humphrey, and a school guidance counselor suggested he attend an Accounting Club dinner at Ball State. He says he’d never taken an accounting class and knew nothing about it.
“Paul Parkinson, the Head of the BSU Accounting Department, spoke that night at the dinner,” Humphrey says. “I babysat for his two boys often, but I had no idea what he did. After hearing his speech that night I decided to try accounting. I didn’t have much interest in anything else, and my grandma Helen liked it. After my sophomore and junior years at Ball State, my godfather, Dick Lorey, who owned Dick Lorey Ford, asked me to intern in his accounting department to make sure accounting was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I loved it and decided to make it my profession.” From there, Humphrey began his accounting career in 1979, working for Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young), where he stayed three years. One of Humphrey’s clients, Baldwin and Lyons, offered him a job every year after the audit, which he turned down. The third time was a charm, and Humphrey went to work for Baldwin and Lyons.
Humphrey filled his own stadium full of Colts memories, but he has two favorites. The first was Marlin Jackson intercepting Tom Brady in the 2006 AFC Championship game, clinching the AFC title and the Indianapolis Colts’ first trip to the Super Bowl. The other was the Colts Super Bowl The rest is history. I met with Mike again the next day. He said the offer still stands if you want it.”
Word spread about Humphrey, and in 1984 he got the phone call that changed his life. Ironically, the call came from two Ernst & Young partners who asked Humphrey if he was interested in interviewing for the Indianapolis Colts’ controller position. Ernst & Young was the Colts’ auditor in Baltimore. But when the Colts rushed full speed ahead with plans for a move to Indianapolis, the current controller didn’t want to relocate. So Humphrey interviewed with Mike Chernoff, the Colts’ legal counsel, who offered him the job over lunch. Humphrey says, “I told him I’d think about it. The next day I turned him down because I really liked my job. Mike was shocked. So were the Ernst & Young guys and a buddy I had told.” In the week that followed, he noticed the Colts billboards along the roads, and he began to reconsider. Humphrey says, “My buddy told me I’m the biggest idiot he’s ever known to turn down a job that only one of 28 people at that time had in the world in the number one sport in the U.S., especially as much as I love sports. basketball games. During that time, he says he rarely missed an Avon football or basketball game. Now more than 10 years after his youngest child graduated from high school, he’s still a referee and working about 100 games every winter. “I’ve known these kids since they were little, watched them grow up, and now I see them and/or their parents at Kroger or in restaurants. Someone always comes up to me asking if I used to coach or ref their child,” he says.
Humphrey says, “In 1987, Colts owner Bob Irsay asked me about my plans for Thanksgiving. I told him I was going to Jasper to get my grandmother as always, bring her here and then to Muncie. Irsay invited us to join his family for Thanksgiving. So we did, and my grandmother told that story to everyone for the rest of her life, until she passed away at 98.” Humphrey says he’s forever grateful not only to his Grandma Helen, his godfather and the guidance counselor for leading him into the profession that has brought him such success, but to the Irsays, as well. He says, “They’ve been very generous to me as they have been to the city and state. I’m very fortunate that they’ve wanted to keep me around so long.” The spirit of generosity instilled by his mom, grandma and the Irsays has inspired Humphrey to give back. In 2010, Humphrey met and befriended a Filipino family, and decided to change their lives. “When I met them,” Humphrey says, “They had a large mortgage (which I paid off), no beds, showers, toilets, TV, lots of things most of us take for granted. I bought them all those things and more, helped pay for
their kids’ school and college expenses to give them a good start in life and ultimately be self-sufficient. Now, one of the daughters is a college math professor and supports her family so I won’t need to. Another child who was an average student improved to third in her class after I offered her money for good grades. It’s priceless to watch them on Skype and in videos opening Christmas and birthday presents since they’ve never experienced that. The reward I get from seeing them happy, making them try harder and changing their lives is far greater to me than anything I could ever receive.”
The journey continues for Humphrey, with much perhaps yet undecided. But family comes first on that list. Father to Abby, Rob and Breanne, he says he couldn’t be prouder that each has enjoyed success in his or her respective profession. Humphrey cherishes Christmas with his family. He started some new traditions of his own with his kids and their spouses/partner. A true-blue football guy, he created a gift exchange much like an NFL draft. Everyone selects a stocking stuffer gift and chooses a wine bottle according to their draft order. “It gets exciting watching them pick.” Christmas 2017 will get very exciting, indeed, with the arrival of Humphrey’s first grandchild, a girl due in March. Next on his list is staying involved with the Avon community.
Changing the lives of those less fortunate is just one way Humphrey has given back. He’s been generous to the Avon community. In the 1990s, when Humphrey coached his daughters in softball, he wanted to give back to the community.
He says, “Avon reminds me of visiting my grandmother in Jasper. It’s a small community where a lot of the people know each other. It’s grown a lot over the past 20 to 25 years, but it still has a small-town feel to me.”
Humphrey says, “I used to cut grass and drag and line diamonds all spring and summer.”
Humphrey recalls when he moved to Avon, Monty’s was the only grocery store and there were only three elementary schools, one middle school and an intermediate school. Now Avon has two middle and two intermediate schools, seven elementary schools and a high school with an enrollment around 2600.
He didn’t stop there. He joined the board of the Avon Junior Athletics Association, eventually becoming the president of the organization. Humphrey also added basketball referee to his already full plate in 1995, getting his referee license and working Avon Junior Athletics Association 32 / AVON MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com
Whatever the future holds for Humphrey, he’ll make it a hole in one.

Six participants are challenged to survive in six grueling landscapes across South Shon, who was a Marine for six years and America. What motivates a person to voluntarily put himself in the most extreme and dangerous environments on the planet, completely isolated, with nothing but his resilience to keep him alive? That’s the question I had the opportunity to ask Fishers resident Shon Joyner.

He says it’s hard to put into words what the isolation feels like, including depending only upon yourself for your own survival. He credits his time in the Marines for helping to prepare him, but the isolation made it a vastly different experience.
One unexpected result of the experience was a change to his senses, and how he experiences his environment.
Joyner said, “Combat with the enemy versus combat with yourself in complete isolation are two totally different battles. In combat, you have other Marines to go through the experience with. With this you’re completely on your own. The isolation is horrible. “Every day felt like 5 days,” he continued. “Your entire concept of time changes. You only see the 30 minutes of edited footage. You don’t see the other 23.5 hours of the struggle that I go through. But it happened and I lived it.” Joyner says that the experience challenged him in ways he never thought possible, even with his service in the Marines. The most surprising thing to him was how emotionally broken he became as days stretched on and his sense of isolation grew. Even during transports from one hellish location to the next, the production crew could offer no comfort, assistance, or even interact with him on any level not critical to moving him to the next location. Joyner was unable to share the final result of his experience, but he said that upon returning home he had a hard time re-acclimating to his “normal” environment. In fact, he said he isolated himself for a week before leaving his home and reengaging with the outside world. He said he had a hard time remembering how to use his phone, and the first time he got in his car he sat there for 10 minutes because he had a hard
“I felt like my body transformed, became animal like in some way, because it had to,” he said. “My survival depended on it.”
When asked by the producers of the show if he would consider doing it again, he said he absolutely would. “It’s a rare, life-changing opportunity.” You can watch Shon Joyner on The Wheel when it premieres Friday, January 13, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on The Discovery Channel.

KEEPING A RIVALRY ALIVE: GAUGUIN V. SEURAT Writer / Kara Kavensky
The Indianapolis Museum of Art, founded in 1883, is one of the oldest art museums in the United States. That same year, 35year old Paul Gauguin left his successful position as a Parisian stockbroker to dedicate his life to art (to the distress of his wife, with whom he had five children). Three years later, Gauguin would paint a pivotal and influential work, Still Life with Profile of Laval. Still Life with Profile of Laval, which is currently on display in the European Galleiesr, is the cornerstone of the Pont-Aven Collection acquired by the IMA from international art collector Samuel Josefowitz in 1998. This famous painting is going on tour later this year, first to The Art Institute of Chicago, and then on to the world famous Musee d’Orsay in Paris. The acquisition of works by Gauguin and his followers, included in the Pont-Aven Collection, elevated the prestige of the IMA in international art circles. Of the 17 paintings in the collection,
three are by Gauguin. The Pont-Aven Collection also includes 84 prints by Gauguin and his cronies. “In addition to the Pont-Aven Collection, we have the best collection of Neo-Impressionist paintings in the world outside of the Musee d’Orsay and the Kroller-Muller Museum in Europe,” says Ellen Lee, Wood-Pulliam Senior Curator and a friend of Josefowitz. The IMA already possessed one masterpiece by the founder of the movement, Georges Seurat, The Channel of Gravelines, and Petit Fort Philippe, through a generous donation in 1945 from Mrs. James W. Fesler, in memory of her parents. Indianapolis businessman W. J. Holliday gave the IMA’s core collection of works by Seurat’s followers to the IMA in 1979. Other strategic additions were made more recently through the family and friends of Robert S. Ashby. Inside the European Art Galleiesr, the juxtaposition of the PontAven Collection gallery adjacent to the Neo-Impressionist

collection gallery continues a rivalry, which now stretches across an ocean. The history of the contentious relationship between Gauguin and Seurat is something of legend. Gauguin is 11 years older than Seurat and yet their artistic journeys are parallel. Each began drawing and painting in 1873. The eighth (and final) Exhibition of Impressionists opened May 15, 1886, in Paris. The lead up was filled with controversy as Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Caillebotte withdrew from participation due to the acceptance of newcomer Georges Seurat. Camille Pissarro had pushed for Seurat’s inclusion. Just before the opening, Degas insisted the word “impressionists” be removed from the announcements. Gauguin displayed a huge collection, whereas Seurat showed only a few works, including La Grande Jatte, (owned by The Art Institute of Chicago). La Grande Jatte and the other paintings of Seurat garnered the most attention from the Exhibition. Gauguin’s keen disappointment that Seurat had garnered most of the Exhibition’s acclaim was heightened by the realization that his former mentor, Pissarro, was now a follower of the young Seurat. If social media existed in 1886, the throwdown tweets after the eighth and final Impressionist Exhibition would've been something like this: @gauguin my exhibit is bigger and better than Seurat’s dots #gohomelittleboy @seurat The old man brought the goods yet I #dominated Still Life with Profile of Laval was painted the winter following the famous final Exhibition. Arguably much of the best and most
representative work of Gauguin will be in close quarters with Seurat in Chicago this June since La Grande Jatte, the talk of the eighth Exhibition, is in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. At the IMA, the Gauguin paintings in the Pont-Aven Collection include: Flageolet Player on the Cliff, Christmas Night and Still Life with Profile of Laval. Flageolet Player on the Cliff, was painted by Gauguin the summer before Seurat created The Channel of Gravelines, both currently on display in the IMA’s European Galleries. Pont-Aven is located in the Brittany region of France. It is here that Paul Gauguin attracted a group of artists, creating the PontAven post-impressionist movement. Georges Seurat moved in a different direction, to various ports in northern France, when he wanted a break from the Paris studio. Still Life with Portrait of Laval almost didn’t make the flight to Indianapolis when the collection was acquired in 1998, as it was flagged during the legal due diligence because a prior owner bore the name Herzog. The wealthy Herzog family, led by patriarch Baron Mor Lipot Herzog, amassed the largest collection of art in Budapest, Hungary in the early 20th century. The baron died in 1934, leaving his estate divided amongst his three children. Still Life with Portrait of Laval was given to his middle son, Andras Herzog. Andras married and divorced Maria Izabella Farravicini, with whom he had two daughters. Andras later died in a forced labor camp in 1943. Allied postwar protocol required works of art to be returned to their countries of origin. There is existing litigation today by other Herzog heirs, regarding other works of art still in Hungary. After the war Still Life with Portrait of Laval was

safeguarded and inventoried in Germany by Indiana native Thomas Carr Howe, Jr., one of the original Monuments Men. It was then shown to have been legally released by Hungary to a Countess Istvan Bethlen in 1948. This countess was Andras’ ex-wife, who had remarried. The painting bears the stamped seal of the Hungarian government on the back of the canvas, which enabled its legal departure from Hungary. The Countess promptly sold the Gauguin masterpiece, and it was eventually purchased by Josefowitz. “It was my dream, made possible by the IMA’s expansion in 2006, to juxtapose our Seurat collection with our Gauguin material, creating a permanent space in the European Galleries for these two major movements of the late 1800s,” adds Lee. Gauguin’s Still Life with Portrait of Laval is small in stature, yet rich in meaning. Art historians may continue their discourse in perpetuity over the symbolism of each element of this painting. “The Pont-Aven period for Gauguin is when he became a mature artist,” shares Lee. “He painted incredible works while in Tahiti, but it was Pont-Aven, years earlier, where he had his breakthrough.” Still Life with Portrait of Laval abounds in personal symbolism of the artist. The ceramic vessel in the center of the table was created by Gauguin. In an 1887 letter to his wife, Gauguin drew a sketch of the sculpture and wrote: “Did you also bring a pot I made; keep it carefully for me. I like it, unless you are able to sell it (for a good price, 100 francs).” There is no evidence today that the piece still exists, as its whereabouts are unknown. The still life and white tablecloth are an homage to Cezanne, whom Gauguin admired greatly. Charles Laval is a Gauguin groupie and friend. They met in Pont-Aven the summer of 1886. The cropped image of Laval in the painting is indicative of the style of Degas, who was a mentor to Gauguin. The choppy nature of the addition of Laval’s profile is a modern approach to a portrait, referencing Degas’ style. A highly speculative element of the painting is the middle section. Scholars think it to be a window or a mirror, or possibly something entirely different. Through scientific examination, the mystery of this upper center region of the painting may be close to be being solved. “Under infrared light, the middle area appears to be that of a mirror, as the imaging shows a clear reflection of Laval’s profile,” states Senior Conservator of Paintings Linda Witkowski.
IMA EXHIBITS • Adjacent to the Pont Aven gallery, is What Lies Beneath • CSI: Conservation Science Indianapolis, Chemistry of Color • European Gallery (H208, H209) - Open for viewing the contentious styles of Gauguin and Seurat, with limited viewing of Still Life with Profile of Laval until it goes on tour.

Q & A WITH AVON TOWN COUNCIL MEMBER BEV AUSTIN WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I am from Belleville — I was born and raised in Hendricks County. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN ON THE AVON TOWN COUNCIL? I took my seat in October of 2006. WHAT LED YOU TO RUN FOR THIS POSITION? I was working at the Chamber of Commerce and really wanted to get more involved in the community and saw this as an opportunity! TELL ME ABOUT YOUR ROLE IN THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, HOW LONG YOU’VE BEEN THERE? I began as a volunteer in 2008 and started my career there in May 2011. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? (IN BOTH ROLES) Haha! No such thing as typical! My council role varies greatly by the time of year and current projects. During budget season we have many more meetings to prepare for the approval — when projects are in front of us we will have additional meetings to prepare. As part of my council position I serve in a few liaison positions — each of these positions have the same kind of ebb and flow. I typically have 4 to 5 meetings per month for this position and the liaison positions. At the ACS, I spend about ¼ of my time focused internally helping our team to collaborate well with our customers and maximize our impact in the Indianapolis
market. The rest of my time is spent with my accounts — larger employers and the sports team in Indy working on their employee engagement and involvement in our mission. I also have the responsibility of bringing new people to the organization by raising awareness of the good work we are doing. TELL ME ABOUT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR CAREER. Right now I am excited about the Real Men Wear Pink program I am working on with the American Cancer Society. It is an awareness/fundraising campaign and the individuals I am working with have displayed a great passion for fighting breast cancer. My favorite thing is to give a new volunteer information and then let them get creative and watch their success! HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUR YOUNGER SELF? Speak up and act sooner when your gut is saying it isn’t right. WHAT IS YOUR MAIN GOAL FOR THE FUTURE? To focus on enjoying the journey. I would like to inspire others to action. ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ANY COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS? Through my council position I serve on the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management Board and I also serve on the Hendricks College Network board. I continue to be involved in our local Relay For Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events as a volunteer to honor my friend who lost her battle with cancer.
42 / AVON MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com
WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT AVON? I like that it feels like a young community and there is a great energy here! TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FAMILY, AGES, ETC. I have three children: Chelsea, Benjamin and Haley, and two grandchildren: Weston, 8 and Greyson, 2. WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX? I like to do crafts, spend time with my friends and read when I can. WHAT IS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY’S FAVORITE PART OF AVON? We love the parks and honestly the variety of restaurant options is nice too! WHAT WAS YOUR LAST VACATION? I went to Florida to visit my mom — I am planning to go back in December! WHAT WAS THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW? “The Boss” with Melissa McCarthy was hilarious!

YEARLY HCDGC TOURNAMENTS RAISE FUNDS, CANNED GOODS FOR THOSE IN NEED Writer / Steven Penn
known as “The Ice Bowl.”
Every winter, the Hendricks County Disc Golf Club braves the elements with a purpose: To help those in need.
“(The Ice Bowl) is part of an international, multi-site, series of events,” Strifler said. “These are specifically aimed at supporting local food pantries. Over the last few years we have focused our support on the Avon Parkside Church of the Nazarene Food pantry.”
For the past few years, January and February have provided opportunities for the club to raise funds and collect canned goods while playing disc golf. The club has two fundraisers scheduled for the beginning of 2017. “One tournament is part of a series named Western Indiana Frozen Fundraiser Series,” said John Strifler, co-president of the Hendricks County Disc Golf Club, along with John Lowery. “These events are hosted throughout central and western Indiana, with each host site choosing a charity to support. Last year, we supported two of our fellow disc golfers, who had chosen to serve in international mission fields. One was in Kenya, and the other is now in Belgium.” This year marks the fourth Western Indiana Frozen Fundraiser Series event. Strifler said the other fundraiser is in its sixth year and is
Strifler said the dates for the winter fundraisers haven’t yet been set. Those who want to participate do not have to be members of the Hendricks County Disc Golf Club. “These events will have pre-registration available with walk up sign ups available,” he said. “Our tournaments are on Saturdays, and usually involved two rounds of golf, with a lunch break.” Strifler and Lowery founded the Hendricks County Disc Golf Club in 2008. “We started the club intentionally to promote disc golf as an enjoyable activity, and to be able to more effectively promote the game and sport,” Strifler said. “Because 44 / AVON MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com
it is easy to learn, yet a challenge to master, it is a perfect activity for any age.” Disc golf, he said, is similar to regular golf. “You throw a disc rather than hit a golf ball, with the goal to have the fewest possible strokes/throws to hole out,” he said. “Many of the same terms are used. You have a starting tee for each disc golf hole, which are often concrete for traction. Rather than a hole in the ground, disc golf uses baskets to catch the disc.” Another difference is disc golf holes are measured in feet rather than yards. “In comparison, a 220 yard golf hole would be considered a 3 par, with a good birdie opportunity,” Strifler said. “In disc golf, a 220 feet hole would be a 3 par, and a good birdie chance. Most holes in disc golf are par 3, until a hole is 500 feet long or has a complicated fairway path to the hole; then a par 4 is common.” There are currently four publicly accessible disc golf courses in Hendricks County, with the Avon Town Hall course being the oldest.
