ESCAPE FROM VIETNAM
The scorching sun beat down on the streets of Saigon as Tim Nguyen and his nine siblings ran errands for the family business. It was the 1960s and Tim’s dad, Phat van Nguyen, owned a small Vietnamese general store that sold the essentials — rice and Coca-Cola.

slow down; this is key since staying in the right zone maximizes fat burn and increases the metabolism, thereby burning additional calories. The $89 monthly membership rate is reduced for anyone who chooses to pay up-front or commit to a 6-month or yearlong membership.
For several years, Craig Valier has owned 9Round Kickbox Fitness in Greenwood and Southport. In January, he opened a third location in Avon at 7615 E. U.S. Hwy 36. A big draw to such a gym is that even someone on the go can squeeze in a half an hour to exercise. Plus, since a new round of circuit training starts every three minutes, clients can work out at their convenience.
“Personal trainers at most gyms typically charge one dollar per minute,” says Valier. “Here you get an entire month of workouts for about the same cost as an hour with a personal trainer.”
Members pay a $99 start-up fee, which buys a pair of championship boxing gloves, hand wraps, and blue-tooth enabled heartrate monitor. Trainers, who teach form and technique, are included in the membership cost. During workouts, clients wear customized heartrate monitors, enabling trainers to advise members to speed up or
The 30-minute fitness routine breaks down like this: Every three minutes, members move from round to round, participating in activities such as jump rope, light weight training, coordination drills, heavy bag work for resistance and strength, speed bag work for quickness and agility, and core work. Valier promises that by the time folks leave,
Also included in the membership is access to an online nutrition portal so that clients can pair healthy eating with their exercise habits.
they’re dripping in sweat. He also notes that in one half-hour session men typically burn 500-550 calories; women, 350-400. The difference between 9Round Fitness and other gyms is that this workout is focused. “At ‘big box’ gyms, you may spend a couple of hours wandering around, not sure of what to do, waiting on a machine to open up, and leave having not really gotten in a good workout,” says Valier. “Here you get in, get out, and get on with your day. Plus, you have a trainer there during that 30 minutes to take all of the thinking out of the equation.” Valier encourages potential clients not to be intimidated by kickboxing, a sport that’s enjoyable, energizing, and effective. Members often start seeing a change within two weeks of starting the program. And though Valier has witnessed dramatic weight loss in clients, he sees the most improvement in balance and overall toning. “I’ve had people come in whose coordination was so bad, they struggled to walk and chew gum at the same time,” Valier says with a chuckle. “Now they’re in here jumping rope and kicking with power. It’s amazing.” Most importantly, clients report feeling so much better. “That’s what it’s all about,” says Valier, once overweight himself. “Feeling healthy is the best reward.” Give 9Round Kickbox Fitness a try. The first workout is free! For more information, call 317-268-6486 or visit www.9round.com/fitness/Avon-IN-x9726.

The Avon High School graduating class of 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the first graduating class in Avon. The first graduating class was back in 1917 and only had two graduates – Russell Blair and Mary Davis. The class of 2017 will have 680 graduates. Avon graduate Marsha (Quearry) Acton (Class of 1960) was surprised to hear how many were preparing for commencement since she only had 56 students in her class. She married her high school sweetheart, Lloyd Acton (Class of 1959). “When we were in high school, you didn’t miss the basketball games. One of my best memories, we’ve laughed about it a lot, one of the basketball players was also in the band. At halftime, he would come out and play in his basketball shorts at halftime 8 / AVON MAGAZINE / MAY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com
and go back and finish the game,” laughed Marsha. “It’s hard to imagine now, since we have such a large band,” she added. Music was always very important in Avon. In a picture dated 1929, you can see the boy’s quartet dressed in tuxes and top hats despite being in the middle of the Great Depression. Avon’s basketball team has always been thriving, but the football team didn’t always exist. Avon-Washington Township Library Historian Susan Truax said many parents didn’t want their kids playing football because it was too rough. However, 1963 graduate, Lydia (Ferree) Degan said the football team was established her junior year. “Most of us had never seen a football game, but we went and cheered anyway,” said Degan. Since then the football team has grown and was even awarded the 2015 Regional Champions.
IT’S FUNNY, ALL WE WANTED TO DO WAS GROW, GROW, GROW. Class trips were also a big deal for the juniors and seniors. Students used to sell concessions under the stairs in the basement to raise money to pay for those trips. You can see in the pictures they went to Washington D.C. one year and Mammoth Cave another. However, Degan said instead of a class trip, government teacher, and AHS grad, Arthur “Feeney” Davis, took them to the Danville court house. “The day we went, a murder trial was underway that had been moved from Marion County. We were so fascinated with it, we went back every day during the trial,” said Degan. Over the years, the school system evolved. According to a research project complied by eighth graders in 1966-67, Washington Township began as 10 different subscription schools. That meant any parents wishing to have their children educated personally paid the teacher. Avon did offer a three-year high school until 1916, but abandoned it for a new consolidated school. Avon-Washington Township Library Historian Susan Truax said at one time the high school was located on U.S. 36 where the Avon Fire Department currently resides. The high school was moved across the street at some point. According to “The History of Hendricks County, 1914-1976,” the old high school building was demolished in 1970 and was replaced by the current building which is now Avon Middle School South. “There were 131 students in my senior class. I attended all 12 years in the same building, now the middle school on U.S. 36. My school life was great! I had so much fun being a class officer for 4 years and on the yearbook staff. We were not allowed to wear pants until my junior year. It had to be a matching outfit,” said Cindy Turner Simmons, Class of 1972.

The town of Avon has grown drastically over the years. At one point, the only stop lights on U.S. 36 were at Raceway Road and 267 and people used to shop at Monty’s Market, located near where the Speck’s Pet Supply is now. The addition of a fast food restaurant in the 1980’s was also a big accomplishment for the town. “It was a big deal when we got a McDonalds. We felt like we had finally arrived. Before, we had to drive to 10th Street in the Chapel Hill area, Plainfield, or Danville to get fast food,” said Brian Richardson, Class of 1988.
traffic,” said Richardson. A common theme from the former graduates was how close everyone was with one another. “It was pretty easy to know everyone in your grade as most people had been here from the very beginning,” said Penny (Carlisle) Ebert, 1983 graduate.
“It’s funny, all we wanted to do was grow, grow, grow. But looking back, I think most of us miss that smaller town... with a lot less
Avon has quickly grown into a rich, diverse school system with 7 elementary schools, 2 intermediate schools, 2 middle schools and an expansive high school. The current high school was built in 1999. The class of 2000 the first graduating class out of the new Avon High School. Graduates that year remember the transition to the new school and the acid spill that gained the attention of the local news.

adoption costs add up, she wondered if perhaps she could learn how to make and sell goat’s milk soap to help defray the adoption expenses. “We already had chickens, rabbits and cats, so why not add a goat?” Karen says. Plus, it would provide additional chores and responsibilities for the youngsters. Soon the whole family was learning how to milk goats, and Kevin was the first to encourage his wife’s passion — especially after hearing the positive customer feedback. “We’d go to farmer’s markets where people would repeatedly tell us how the goat’s milk soap had improved their skin,” Kevin says. “Folks with cancer, psoriasis and eczema were telling us that this product was changing their lives by helping their dry skin.”
Using a software program, Karen played around with homemade soap recipes, choosing ingredients and essential oils based on whether she was looking to craft a bubbly or creamy lather, a conditioning or drying bar. Then she created trial sizes to test it. Karen has found that the most popular selling scents of her all-natural soaps are Shea Supreme, French Lavender and Indian Lemongrass. Once it became clear that Karen could transition her short-term money making endeavor into a full-fledged, profitable career, she decided to go for it and in July 2013, Global Soaps was born. Selling soaps, lotions, lip balm, laundry detergents and stain remover bars, the name of the company reflects the Burgess’ diverse, global family. Growing the business, while taxing, was nothing compared to the energy it took to grow their family. “Adopting five children all at once and adjusting to the many changes that brings is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Karen says. “Learning how to be friends and siblings and love one another takes time. Even now, after nearly four years of all living as a family, the pieces are still coming together.” It’s a lot to tackle on a daily basis — homeschooling nine children, running a business and still fitting in time to do everything else it takes to run a household. That’s why Karen maintains a flexible schedule that more easily adapts to illnesses, appointments and work responsibilities. Last spring, the Burgess’ eldest daughter, Carissa, graduated high school and is now helping her parents to cultivate both the soap and real estate businesses. In fact, all of the children have a hand in the company’s success. The older ones milk the goats and help make and sell the soap while the younger ones gather leaves for the animals and decorate the bags the soap is sold in. All of the children pitch in to clean the stalls

and care for the health of the goats — of which there are now 16. The entire process has served to be a tremendous bonding experience, and Karen couldn’t be happier with the astounding change she has witnessed in her children as they have acclimated to a new culture, a new language and a new life in Indiana. The youngest adoptee, for instance, initially bristled when his parents tried to hold or touch him. Like many young children, he also experienced emotional outbursts and physical fits. Now, however, he runs to his parents for tender hugs, he seeks their loving approval and he’s eager to demonstrate any new things he’s learned. The Burgesses advice to other families who are looking to adopt a large number of children is to pray regularly, garner support from those who have been through the process and take the transition one day at a time. “It’s quite a roller coaster, but it’s so worth it,” Kevin says. “So, give yourself grace and just keep going. That’s what we’re doing, and we are immensely enjoying the ride.” For more information about the Burgess family and their business, visit globalsoaps. com. Their products are also available in Hendricks County at Decorator Mall (Plainfield), Frazee Gardens (Brownsburg), The Bee Hive (Danville) and the Garden Gate and Flower Shop (North Salem). They can also be found this summer at the Plainfield and Brownsburg Farmers Markets.

RELAY FOR LIFE UNITES CANCER SURVIVORS AND FIGHTERS Writer / Heather Chastain
“I haven’t missed a Relay For Life since 2001, and I never will. I’ll be doing The Relay forever,” Larry Campbell said, dabbing the tears from his eyes. Campbell is still raw with emotion from losing his wife just 10 months prior. His wife, Pam, was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2011. After a five-year battle, she died July 2016 at the age of 61. “We had our physical family and our Relay family,” Larry said fondly. “They [American Cancer Society volunteers] would drive her to and from doctor’s appointments. They would call and check on her. They made us food – more food than we knew what to do with. People would stop by and check on her. We really got a lot of support.” But it wasn’t just the volunteers who helped the Campbell family during their most difficult days. Those who worked for the American Cancer Society also guided and supported them along the way. “There are people you can call 24/7 to help get you through whatever you needed to talk about. I only called a few times at first, but they were really helpful,” Campbell said. He also credits the American Cancer Society’s research, funding and grants for helping Pam get access to a new drug that came on the market while she was getting treatment. “She was a fighter,” Larry said. Before Pam’s diagnosis, the two were actively involved in Relay For Life. Larry began as a team captain in 2001 for his employer, Hendricks Power (then it was REMC). Pam came out the day of The Relay and ended up staying for the entire event.
“We had a good time that year,” Campbell said smiling. “Normally, once someone comes to The Relay, they find out how much fun it is and they keep coming back. There’s a lot of fun and laughter sitting around the campfire at night.” 18 / AVON MAGAZINE / MAY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com
Fellow Relay For Life volunteer, and breast cancer survivor, Jessica Baker, agreed with Campbell’s sentiment. “The American Cancer Society is amazing. The comradery, the people, the employees, it’s just a great organization,” Baker said.
Baker was diagnosed in 2012 with breast cancer at age 36. After completing her treatment, she found Relay For Life. “I wanted to do something to give back and to help,” she says. “I wanted to help other people get through cancer.” In 2015, Baker attended the Hendricks Relay For Life and spoke about her journey. Still an active member of the Relay, she is involved through her employer Eli Lily. “My son was three when I was diagnosed,” Baker said. “He doesn’t remember me going through chemo, but he for sure knows I’m a cancer survivor. He loves volunteering and passing out info at events. We also started a pink day at his school.” You can join the fight by visiting their website cancer.org.

Andy Mohr presents Chris Hill with the Teacher of the Year Award
AHS 2017 Teacher of the Year: Chris Hill Writer / Heather Chastain
Avon High School’s Chris Hill is the 2017 Teacher of the Year. The Vermillion County native teaches Engineering Technology. He is also Lead Mentor of the successful Robotics Club, the Roborioles. “Being teacher of the year has been an honor,” Hill said. “I am fortunate to live and work in a community that holds teachers and education in such high regard. As far as I am aware, there is not an official definition of the Teacher of the Year, but I do not think I am even close to the best teacher in Avon. “I am extremely fortunate to teach great
students and am able to work with a great team of teachers that support students in their growth,” he added. I also have an administrative team that supports me in all of my teaching and is not afraid of thinking outside of the box in terms of projectbased learning.” Hill came to Avon right after graduating from Indiana State. He taught at the middle school for four years before transitioning to the high school. This is Hill’s seventh year at the high school. During that time, Hill said he has seen the department grow significantly. 20 / AVON MAGAZINE / MAY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com
“I am fortunate to have outstanding students in class,” Hill said. “For the most part, all of my students really enjoy the work we do and challenge themselves and others to be their best. I also really enjoy teaching at Avon because of the unbelievably dedicated and talented staff. From kindergarten teachers through the Superintendent, we are all here to serve students and help them grow in multiple ways. “I am pushed to be better every day because I have seen and continue to see excellence in teaching, there is a culture of teaching excellence,” he added. “This has been created over many generations of teachers within Avon and I am proud to continue it.”

Escape From Viet nam Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing
The scorching sun beat down on the streets of Saigon as Tim Nguyen and his nine siblings ran errands for the family business. It was the 1960s and Tim’s dad, Phat van Nguyen, owned a small Vietnamese general store that sold the essentials — rice and Coca-Cola. Tim has fond memories of his childhood, attending school six mornings a week, playing with his brothers and sisters, and collecting customers’ empty Coke bottles at week’s end.
The Nguyens, who converted to Christianity in 1976, were unable to secure jobs due to their faith, and several of Tim’s older siblings were told to join a communist youth group to avoid being imprisoned. After enduring nearly three years of living with scarce food, zero autonomy and fleeting freedoms, Tim’s father made the bold move to attempt an escape. The first part of his plan involved relocating his wife and kids 300 km south of Saigon near the Tac Van River, a branch of the Mekong Delta River.
A Vietnamese friend gave Phat money to buy Save for his older brother, Tom, who a 34-foot riverboat that was 5.4 feet wide and ventured to the U.S. in 1972 to attend college, 4 feet tall. After selling all their possessions, the entire Nguyen family lived in Vietnam. on November 30, 1977, with nothing more than a walking compass and two five-HP “It was a simple life in Saigon,” recalls Tim. engines (the size for a lawnmower), Phat That simplicity was blasted, however, when loaded his wife, children, a daughter-in-law, the Communists took over in 1975, at and a cousin into the tiny boat and sailed which time the family lost touch with Tom down the river that would eventually lead due to disrupted mail service. them out to the South China Sea. 24 / AVON MAGAZINE / MAY 2017 / AvonMagazine.com
Tim, 13 years old at the time, had no idea they were attempting an escape. “Dad didn’t tell me or my younger siblings what we were doing because he didn’t want us talking to our friends and ruining the plan,” Tim says. “The cover story he told all the neighbors was that we were going to visit my mom’s side of the family who lived north of the river.” Prior to the escape, Phat bought sugar cane, bananas and pineapples so he could pass as a merchant to police patrolling the river. His plan was nearly foiled during the first night when their rudder got stuck in a fishing net strewn across the mouth of the river. Panic engulfed Phat as he frantically cut away at the net, worried that authorities would stop to question him. Thankfully, they continued cruising. “I imagine they didn’t think anyone was crazy enough to brave the ocean in that kind of ill-equipped craft,” says Tim, who
describes the trip as a suicide mission since his father had no nautical experience, no fishing knowledge and no life jackets or anchor on board. “Dad could no longer live in a communist regime. In his mind, we would all live together or die together. It was worth the risk.”
December 1977 at the refugee camp in Songkla, Thailand
Before setting out, Phat administered Benadryl to his children to keep them quiet. When Tim woke up hours later, they were in the middle of the ocean in the pitch black dark of night. A nasty storm blew in and waves crashed into the boat, knocking the lid off the container that stored their drinking water, contaminating it with saltwater. Thankfully, the entire five days at sea were cloudy, which helped stave off thirst and heat exhaustion. Still, the travelers battled turbulent seas, high winds, motion sickness and dehydration. To uplift their spirits, they said prayers and sang songs, but keeping the faith was difficult.
BURMA LAOS
“We had no idea where we were going,” Tim says. “We’d see birds and think land might be close but no. We’d spot trash floating in the ocean and assume we were nearing land, but it was just passing ships dumping trash in international waters.” One day a giant freighter cruised by them at full speed. The enormous wake generated from the monster vessel created 3 to 4-story high waves, pummeling the Nguyens’ small, overloaded riverboat.

“It felt like a futile task because every time we dumped a pail of water, another halfgallon would splash back in,” Tim says. But the truth is, that bailing kept them from sinking. The Nguyen family was ultimately rescued by a Thai fishermen. Within minutes of boarding the fishing boat, their tattered vessel to freedom disintegrated before their eyes.

Family arriving at the Indianapolis airport on May 13, 1978
“Literally within a few minutes, our boat was completely submerged,” Tim says. Once the 13, weary passengers were dropped on the shores of Thailand, they found shelter at a refugee camp where they were greeted with rice soup and fireworks. “Dad told us that the colorful, booming sky was the Thai people welcoming us,” Tim recalls. “Later we found out it was the king’s birthday.” Though the Nguyens escaped jail time for entering the country illegally, they still suffered during their five-month stay in the dirty, overcrowded camp. For food, they were provided rice but no meat or vegetables. Sometimes the Thai guards also got drunk and beat the refugees. While there, however, the family learned to speak English and how to assimilate to society in the United States. The Nguyens arrived in the U.S. on May 13, 1978. Thanks to connections Phat had made with an old friend, Robert Jackson, they reunited with the eldest brother Tom. Jackson also arranged for Upland Evangelical Mennonite Church in Upland, Ind. to help the Nguyens secure housing and furniture. The church also paid the family’s expenses for six months. After graduating high school in 1982, Tim moved to Indianapolis. In 1986, he formed PC-COM, a computer shop he runs with his wife Ana and his brother-in-law that specializes in computer sales and service catering to both business and home use. An Avon resident since 1999, Tim loves the community. “It’s great to see how it has developed and grown through the years,” he says. Tim and Ana have two daughters and a son. Andrea recently graduated from Marian University and now works as an accountant. Vincent is a sophomore at IUPUI, and Danielle is a freshman at Avon High School. Thanks to his father’s faith, bravery and determination, a new generation of Nguyens are living the dream of happiness, hope and humanity.

OUTRUN THE SUN CO-FOUNDER TALKS SUN SAFETY AND MELANOMA AWARENESS
Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography / Brian Brosmer
After the last remnants of winter and early spring chill have seemed to vanish for good, it’s tempting to dash out the front door and bask in as much of the sun’s warmth as possible. Understandable, yes, but statistics show that plenty of precautions should be taken to avoid the potentially serious health consequences a few seemingly harmless rays can cause. May is National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness month, and according to Anita Day, co-founder and executive director of Outrun the Sun, an Indianapolis-based organization dedicated to promoting awareness, research and education of melanoma and other skin cancers, close to four million cases of skin
cancer are diagnosed each year in the U.S. – more than breast, colon, prostate and lung cancers combined.
protect yourself and reduce risk.
While there is ultimately no way to fully eliminate the chance of developing one of the three major types of skin cancer – basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma – that can result from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds, there are many ways to
Day says the advent of tanning beds has exacerbated the already widespread problem of melanoma and other skin cancers. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, individuals who use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk of melanoma by 75 percent.
“Here’s a really scary statistic – if you get one sunburn as a child, just one, it really increases your risk for developing melanoma later in “Skin cancer is the most prevalent cancer life,” Day says. “There’s really no such thing in America,” Day says. “While different as safe tanning. If you’re going to be at things types of skin cancer aren’t considered to be life-threatening like melanoma, it still like your kid’s baseball game in the bleachers requires some extensive surgery and they for three hours, it’s all about hats, sunglasses, can be life threatening if left undetected long sleeves and of course sunscreen. You and untreated. It’s a much bigger issue than have to be cognizant of how long you’ve been out and reapply sunscreen often.” people realize.”
INDY METRO / MAY 2017 / TownePost.com
“Tanning beds are a big problem, and the notion that getting a base tan will protect you from sunburn is a myth,” Day says. “You see a lot of students who are heading down to Florida for spring break and they head to the tanning booths beforehand to get that base tan, but it doesn’t protect you. Whether it comes from the sun or an indoor tanning bed or what have you, tan skin is damaged skin. And with the fact that everyone grows up thinking that you need to be tan to be attractive, it’s tough to go up against that when you’re trying to decrease the incidents of skin cancer.”

Outrun the Sun is now in its fourth year partnering with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), and this year at the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 29 guests can receive free sunscreen and UV wristbands that change color when exposed to light and also view public service announcements on the IMS video boards featuring Outrun the Sun spokesperson and Verizon IndyCar Series driver Josef Newgarden. “It’s been a far-reaching program, and we’re thrilled to work with IMS on the initiative,” Day says. “It’s such a big event with a lot of people out in the sun all weekend, so it’s great to have some presence and keep people informed and aware of protecting themselves.” Outrun the Sun will hold its 13th annual Race Against Melanoma at Fort Harrison State Park on June 17, consisting of a five-mile competitive run, a five-kilometer run/walk and a one-mile fun walk, beginning at 6 p.m. Proceeds benefit Outrun the Sun’s research and education programs. “Along with the race there’s a sunset festival and there will be music, food trucks, games and activities for all ages, and we encourage everyone to come out,” Day adds. INDY’S MAYOR TALKS GUN VIOLENCE, INDY MINI AND THE 500 Indianapolis has always been the “place to party. Prior to running for Mayor, he be” during the month of May. It’s tradition experienced success in the US Attorney for the 12th largest city in the country to General’s office. host the largest sporting event on the planet. Long earmarked by former speaker of the When asked if he’s a race fan, Mayor Joe Indiana Statehouse John Gregg as a sleeper Hogsett smiles and states, “Of course.” Democratic candidate, Mayor Joe was a key cornerstone for a Democratic rival for Mayor Joe, as he is known, grew up in any office. He zeroed in on Indianapolis’ Rushville. His father was a WWII veteran mayoral race. weekend, seven people were shot in Broad Ripple and in a separate incident, two people pulled out guns, killing IMPD officer Perry Renn as a result of a gun fight involving an AK47. Mayor Joe, based upon these events, concluded that he needed to be a part of the conversation. He resigned his position as U.S. Attorney and began his campaign. “Being a federal prosecutor for four years, my office was doing things to help Marion County,” Mayor Hogsett says. “We cannot arrest our way out of gun violence.”
Gun violence plagues every urban area across the country and clearly Indianapolis is not immune. Mayor Hogsett felt the need to be engaged in a deeper conversation of public safety during his race. He was motivated by the educational opportunity for community engagement into gun violence. “We have an unacceptable level of gun
violence and homicides in our city,” Hogsett says. He and the leadership of IMPD are taking a holistic approach to curbing this violence. After one of the most aggressive campaigns this state has experienced and given the dominance of social media, Mayor Joe’s ability to reach more of his constituents is unprecedented. His media team is intentional with making him more
accessible to his constituents. Their social media platforms help a great deal with this. Once he became Mayor, the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 approached. “Of course, the Indy 500 has always been an important part of our city’s history,” Hogsett says. “Last year was exceptional and special, to be mayor and celebrate the 100th running.” During 2016, Hogsett hosted the national Mayor’s Conference, with 250 mayors from all over the country in attendance, indicating, “Every single one of them said, ‘When are we going to the track?’” Hogsett is pleased that the public has responded to the historical significance of the Indy 500, feeling that with the new leadership at the IMS, and given the shake up during the 90s of the CART / IRL split, the city has witnessed a recovery. “Last year, the race was televised locally for the first time,” Hogsett says. “The Indy 500 is always a great opportunity for the city to show off its international flair. We have become more cosmopolitan. We are no longer a fly-over state for many reasons, and thanks to the Indy 500 draw, we are able to prove it.” During the 90s, under Eliz Kraft Taylor’s leadership at the 500 Festival, the Mini Marathon was rerouted to loop around the track instead of going up and down Meridian Street. "At that same time, we took the mini out of race weekend and moved it to the first Saturday in May,” Taylor says. “Race weekend always exhausts our police force, and the change in the mini was greatly appreciated by both the Police Chief and the Mayor.” “The Hudnut doctrine was ‘you can’t be a suburb of nothing’, which encouraged people to invest in

downtown so the suburbs, which at that time, were the outlier townships of Marion County,” Mayor Hogsett says. Continuing along the same path, The Hogsett Corollary is “you can’t be a downtown of nothing” to which Mayor Joe explains, “Hudnut was speaking to the townships. My meaning is that we have to continue to nurture our downtown and invest in the neighborhoods and surrounding contiguous areas.” Mayor Joe closes with a story: During the early 90s, while he was Secretary of State, he realized he had not registered for the Mini, and at that time it was run on a
Friday morning. Hogsett decided to run the race as a bandit. “Of course, I fully understood the rules,” says Hogsett with a smile. He jumped into the crowd of runners a little after the start, running among those who formally registered.
As Mayor Joe ran alongside Allison’s, a group of men on break outside in the yard began chanting, “USA, USA.” He ran through a residential area approaching downtown and an elderly woman, seated in her front yard, stood up and walked toward the sidewalk and yelled as he went by, “You’re THIRD!”
This was the first year that the route looped around the track and boomeranged back to downtown. As he approached the track entrance, he was stopped by volunteers wearing yellow and flagging him down, so Joe circumvented his route to 16th street. He was running alone, but this fact did not initially register with him.
“Then it dawned on me that I had accelerated my placement by not running the distance inside the Motor Speedway and realized I needed to avoid the cameras mounted on top of the scaffolding because I envisioned Jim Shella watching in the Channel 8 newsroom muttering, ‘there’s Joe Hogsett and he’s cheating!’” Mayor Hogsett shared.

They say “third time’s a charm,” and that’s certainly the case for Jeff Hull, who has cheated death twice and now has been named May’s Luckiest Hoosier Alive by Hoosier Park Casino. It was 2014 when Hull started experiencing flu-like symptoms that wouldn’t subside. After enduring multiple digestive problems that landed him in the hospital twice, he traveled to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore for further evaluation. “They tore me apart,” says Hull, noting that he had pancreas problems, an enlarged spleen and a liver that was being destroyed by cirrhosis because one of the main bile ducts was completely closed and doctors could not get it open. Diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, the reason he felt so lousy was because his liver was getting bombarded by waste that his body couldn’t expel. Shortly after the diagnosis, Hull’s gastrointestinal specialist performed extra analysis when taking samples for a biopsy and found abnormal cells, indicating the early stage of cancer. “Very few people survive once cancer is in the bile ducts,” Hull says. “The prognosis wasn’t looking good.” They needed to act quickly. AVON MOM OF THE YEAR:
Julie Keller
Writer / Heather Chastain
“This whole thing has been crazy,” laughed Avon’s Mom of the Year, Julie Keller. “I can’t believe I won mom of the year!” The Brownsburg resident spends a great deal of her time in Avon babysitting her two grandkids, Cameron (5) and Kellen (3). “They are the loves of my life,” Julie says. The spirited winner said she didn’t even know her daughter Robin had nominated her until a friend shared a link from the Avon Magazine website and let her know she would be voting for Julie. “People were calling me and stopping me at church to let me know they were going to vote for me,” Julie says. “So, then I called my daughter to ask her what she had done and she just laughed. I am flattered she thought enough of me to send in a nomination.” The stay-at-home mom spent her days raising her two children, Robin and Adam, and volunteering across the county. She spent a lot of time with the Mental Health Association of Hendricks County, being a part of their puppet show Kids on the Block. Kids on the Block is an educational puppet program for elementary age students. Educational video-based presentations are available for middle and high school students.
“It’s an honor to sing to these people,” Julie says. “It’s not for everyone, but I have a great group of ladies that sing with me.” Looking back at her time as a stay-at-home mom with two children, Julie said it was an idyllic time. “There were 4 to 5 of us who were all stay-at-home moms in our neighborhood, and we were each other’s support group,” Julie says. “We didn’t worry about so many of the things we do today.”
While Julie said she wasn’t a strict mom, she did used to threaten to “The puppets were the kids size, and we wore all black and stood behind them. The kids were always so focused on the puppets that spank her kids with a wooden spoon. they didn’t see us at all,” Julie says. “It was very rewarding seeing “I never had to use it, but it was a nice motivator,” laughs Julie. the kids.” “Recently, Robin found a shirt online with the words, ‘I survived the wooden spoon.’ She shared that with me, and we both laughed Over the years, she said they have added more puppets, including and laughed.” those with autism and other disabilities. Two years ago, Julie learned about a group called the Threshold Choir. It’s a network of a cappella choirs of primarily women's voices whose mission is to sing for and with those on the thresholds of life. In March 2016, she began a group in Indianapolis called the Threshold Singers. Eight ladies have joined her group. The group sings at Horizon Hospice Care in Danville, The Gathering Together in Plainfield and other locations around the county.
Julie said she isn’t sure what kind of mom she was, but she is proud of how her two children tuned out. “We have two wonderful kids who have turned into two wonderful adults, and I guess maybe, in some small way, my parenting may have contributed to that,” Julie says. “Robin is the most kind, loving daughter, and she is my biggest cheerleader and supporter in all I do. I treasure our mother-daughter relationship.”

4 TREATMENTS PROTECT ALL SEASON-LONG!
Sen. Crane sharing a lighter moment with his pages.
A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE SENATE Writer / John Crane
“How’s it going in the Senate?” Hardly a week goes by when I am not asked that question. Just a matter of months ago I was on the outside of the Statehouse, not privy to the inner-workings of the legislative process. Early on the morning of November 9th, after being elected the night before, I found myself sitting in a special meeting with six other freshmen Senators and the rest of the 41-member Senate Republican caucus. Since then, I have found myself with a dizzying sense of the surreal while navigating a Ph.D.-level crash course in public policy and the practical realities of our state government. As an armchair political analyst (and critic) I was pretty well informed about policy issues and the legislative process before
stepping into the Senate. But little did I know how little I actually knew. So, I set out to listen and learn, in order to eventually lead. At the beginning of the session, for example, there were 571 bills filed in the Senate, combined with another 678 bills filed in the House for a total of 1,249 bills put into the legislative pipeline. I quickly discovered that keeping pace with the tsunami of information is much like being in language school. However, instead of learning just one new language, one is diligently striving to learn about 12 to 15 different languages simultaneously. Disseminating the multitude of issues within the limitations of the legislative process is like attempting to understand the complexity of a given situation in an adjoining room by looking through the keyhole.

As any effective leader understands, no one can please everyone all of the time. So, the challenge becomes how to make the best decisions possible within the reality of limited time and information? For me there are four basic lenses which have guided my decision-making: Conscience – As with any person, my deeply held beliefs frame the foundation of my worldview which informs my approach to all of life. To the best of my

ability, therefore, I strive to be true to the principles of that worldview.
constituency, which I strive to do in light of my conscience and our constitutions.
Constitution – When we legislators were first sworn in by the Chief Justice last November, I placed my hand on the Bible and promised to uphold both the United States and the Indiana constitutions. For these guiding documents serve as the primary plumb line for our republican form of government.
Caucus – Finally, as a part of a political team, whenever possible I seek to collaborate with the Republican leadership for the common good of our state.
Constituents – The job of the public servant is to protect the interests of his or her
As challenging as this experience can be at times, I have found it to be much more enjoyable than I even anticipated. This is due in large part to the exceptional people with whom I get to interact on a weekly basis.

My colleagues in the Indiana Senate are leaders of integrity with a genuine desire to serve. While we may not always agree on the best course of action on a given issue, our often spirited debates embody mutual respect as we work together to solve the myriad of problems with which we are confronted. The young men and women who serve as our legislative assistants and interns ensure that the legislature operation runs with tremendous efficiency. Our ability to effectively do our jobs is made possible by the indispensable efforts of these highcaliber, thoughtful young leaders. But most of all, I appreciate the many remarkable people who come down to visit with me. From parents to constituents, the most rewarding part of this experience is coming alongside people as they take in the whole environment, many for the first time. It is a constant reminder of the extraordinary honor it is to serve in such a place. Each day as we open our Senate session in prayer and the pledge to our American flag, I find emotions welling up within me. For I cannot help but reflect on the countless brave men and women who have fought and died so that I may serve in this capacity. It is an extraordinary privilege that is not lost on me. And each day, as I leave to come home to Avon, I know I’ve done my best to steward this privilege well.

START YOUR ENGINES! AVON CELEBRATES RC TRACK Writer / Melissa Gibson . Photography provided by Hoosier RC Racers
or many, the 83-acre Avon Town Hall Park is a hidden gem in the center of the fast-paced town. Located at 6570 E US Highway 36, directly behind the Town Hall is a quiet, serene and family friendly park, perhaps overlooked if not for the unique features. The Parks Department and Town Council have worked tirelessly to maintain a beautiful landscape and inviting atmosphere. A few years ago, they added a disc golf course, recently updated the children’s playground and in the far right corner, added a permanent remote control (RC) Track.
They received the 2016 Community Achievement Award from the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns for such a unique feature, in fact, believed to be the only public track in the State of Indiana.
volunteers came out with rakes and worked the track. Most people don’t realize how prevalent the hobby is. I don’t know why it’s not as big as fishing or hunting or golf.”
Scott Black is the President of Hoosier RC Racers, a club and a leading group in the commission to build and maintain the RC track in the park.
There are commercial tracks in and around Indianapolis. They require an entrance fee and a cost per race and they have highly complicated tracks and computer screens that monitor the car and their actions.
“Here in Avon, they have a beautiful park back there, and they spend a lot of time on it,” Black said. “Gary Gamble of the Parks Department helped us build it and then
Black says for a beginner, it’s expensive, can be intimidating and new people often shy away because they can’t compete at the advanced level.
AvonMagazine.com / MAY 2017 / AVON MAGAZINE / 57
At Avon’s track, people of all ages and ability level are welcome to try. The Avon track is open to the public from sunup to sundown and is designed for beginners. They also post on their website the condition of the track and if weather will play a part in any closure. Black says people generally see RC cars as one of two things: a toy or something so technical, you couldn’t possibly understand it.
They offer a guide for new racers on their website, hrcracers.com, and with a portable track, they regularly participate in community events. Black mentioned race events at HH Gregg, including Indy 500 racers as well as events at Bill Estes Ford. “When you put on a race, it brings people out,” he said. “It’s fun for the whole family and if we’re not all laughing, we’re doing something wrong.”
“What’s interesting, is when you open up the vehicle, it’s almost as complex as a regular vehicle,” Black said. “It’s got all the same things that you hear race car driver’s talk about. From that standpoint, it can be technical, but there’s always people out there that love to help others.”
On May 6 The Town of Avon will host a Spring Fling Radio Control Festival at the park.
There are differences between the toy quality racecar and a hobby quality, though racers are welcome to test out both on the track.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be RC racing, motorized boat and airplane races, vendors and demonstrations. The Avon American Legion Post 145 will sell food and beverages.
The non-profit club tries to stay away from supporting one brand, and racers do not have to be a member to use the track, but those that joined the Hoosier RC Racers have met a group of volunteers interested in helping others. “The club seems to attract the philanthropic kind of people,” Black said. “At meetings, we talk about how we can help new members and how we can get more people involved.”
Over the years, the event has welcomed more than 1,000 people and anyone can sign up for a race throughout the day.
Additional hosts include Hoosier RC Racers, Indianapolis Admirals R/C Model Boat Club, Black Sheep Squadron R/C Airplane Club and IndyHobbies. For additional information, visit avongov.org or hrcracers.com.
