Five Tricks to Dump Holiday Stress off Your Plate Here we go again! From office parties to family gatherings, the holidays’ starch-laden meals, delectable treats and overflowing cocktails could cause even a health guru like Dr. Oz to stumble. To avoid holiday missteps, arm yourself with a plan for navigating around punch bowls of eggnog and break rooms stocked with tempting treats and leftovers.

Take Four Bites

A smaller plate equals less food. This will help you get a taste without loading up. There’s a theory in the diet and nutrition world that says four bites of whatever you’re craving is enough to satisfy you.

Fill Up Before You Go

Keep a supply of quick and healthy snacks nearby. Grab one of “Healthy eating during the holidays doesn’t have to be a chore if you know a few simple tricks,” says Joni Fiscus, clinical dietician at Indiana those snacks just before a holiday gathering, and you will be less likely to overeat. University Health West Hospital. “And let’s face it – the holidays can be stressful enough without feeling guilty about your food choices.” Try these five tips to stay on your healthy eating track. Liquid Calories Count

Buddy Up

Talk with your family, friends and coworkers to set some boundaries. You may be surprised to find others are facing the same challenges.

Sipping on a holiday cocktail may seem like the safe choice, but the numbers are shocking. A margarita can have more calories than a Big Mac. And why opt for a coffeehouse peppermint mocha when you could swap it for Aunt Ruth’s famous red velvet cake? Be prepared with water or unsweetened tea. But take note – soda, punch and juice all contain unnecessary calories too.

Try Healthy Substitutions

Along with good nutrition and regular exercise, regular visits with If you are the one who normally supplies a favorite dessert, consider your primary physician are vital for managing stress and staying substituting ingredients to make it healthier. Tune Up Your Family Recipes • When the recipe calls for a whole egg, try 2 egg whites • When the recipe calls for sour cream, try low fat plain yogurt or low fat sour cream

When it comes to the tastes of the holidays, we tend to prefer our family favorites. Luckily, giving those tried-andtrue recipes a makeover is a snap. You can modify most recipes simply by reducing the amount of fat, salt and sugar while increasing the fiber. Note: Just because it’s healthier doesn’t mean you can ignore your portion sizes.

• When the recipe calls for whipped cream, try chilled evaporated skim milk or other low fat whipped products

• When the recipe calls for whole milk, try skim or 1% milk

• When the recipe calls for cheese, try low-fat cheese but note that fat-free cheese does not melt well when cooking or baking

• When the recipe calls for ice cream, try frozen yogurt

• When the recipe calls for butter, try light butter

• When the recipe calls for heavy cream (not for whipping), try a 1:1 ratio of flour whisked into non fat milk (eg., 1 cup of flour + 1 cup of non fat milk)

• When the recipe calls for cream of mushroom, try low-fat or fat-free cream of mushroom

Quarterback Brandon Peters Begins Career as a Michigan Wolverine Writer / Joshua Deisler Photography provided by Varsity Views and the University of Michigan

Brandon Peters never saw it coming. He was standing behind the bleachers on the night of Homecoming. Flying fast, a quarter had barreled through the fall night, ripping a hole in his eye. In seconds, Brandon was lying in the grass, wondering if he would ever play quarterback again and wondering if he would ever see again.

“He’s a very lucky kid,” says father Dave. “He almost lost his eye.” Brandon’s love of sports is engrained in his family tradition. His first football memories are of playing flag football with his father alongside him as coach. Dave recalls Brandon’s first touchdown as the moment Brandon fell in love with the game. “From early on, football was always in his heart,” says Dave.

Dave placed Brandon at the center; he loved getting his hands on the football. “He was just a kid you could put anywhere “All of a sudden, I turned around, and just got smoked. My eye felt on the field,” says Dave, recalling Brandon’s success in tackle like it was in the back of my head,” recalls Brandon, a seventh grader football. “He was a great defender, our best tackler and our at the time. hardest hitter.” But what could have been the end of a promising career was just the beginning. After two surgeries to repair his damaged eye, Brandon was already looking forward to next season. “I wasn’t going to let my vision or anything like that affect me,” says Brandon.

He never realized his son would be such as star, not until a call from Brandon’s Junior Orioles coach: he wanted to try Brandon as quarterback. “That’s when we found out he had the arm he had,” recalls Dave.

Honestly, I don’t feel pressure. I don’t notice a crowd. I just kind of zone out. Brandon soon understood he had the instinct of a quarterback. He remembers a friend running up to himself after practice, confused at how Brandon always accomplished a perfect spiral throw. To Brandon, it was pure instinct. “That just doesn’t come natural to some people,’ says Brandon. Soon, Brandon started to love football. “I don’t know why. It’s not really just a one-person sport; you need everybody,” he says. As quarterback, he loved the challenge of leading the team. “The coaches put a lot of weight on my shoulders. Sometimes they let me call my own plays.” The best piece of advice they gave him: if you make a mistake, come back better in the next play. Brandon found himself recalling his coaches’ advice in a game against Cathedral. He had just fumbled the ball, and it seemed as if Cathedral may pull of a win. “I didn’t let that mistake get to me. I led my team back onto the field.” Throughout high school, Brandon played sports all year, including basketball. His favorite part of basketball was dunking. But Brandon’s starring sport was football. Brandon was the starting quarterback for the Avon Orioles his sophomore, junior and senior years, leading his team to a 24-10 record and to the sectional and regional championships. As his team won victories, Brandon grew as a leader. “Our team was really close,” he says. “The easiest way to lead is getting to know people, seeing how they react and communicating with them in the right way.” He recalls weekly pizza nights with teammates as they studied playbooks and prepared for the next game.

Brandon led the team to much more than sectional and regional titles. He was also a model for sportsmanship and teamwork. “Brandon is a very quiet leader,” says Dave. “If you know anything about Brandon, he’s about the team.” Brandon is quick to agree about the importance of teamwork and leadership. At a game against Zionsville, Brandon threw three interceptions in the first half. He remembers worrying about how his team was suffering. “The team needed me,” he says. “I got myself together.” Indeed, Brandon led his team through times of victory as well as times of defeat. As the team played for the regional title against Cathedral, Brandon found himself trapped: he had been sacked several times. He rallied his team together to regroup. He remembers how everyone swarmed the field when the Orioles pulled off the win. For Dave, his best moment was watching his son lead the Orioles to a win against Ben Davis in the sectional match. Ben Davis had set out to stop Brandon. In the first half, he was 3-17 on completions. “He could have laid down and pouted, but he rose to the challenge in the second half,” says Dave. “As far as leadership and as a team, to me it was his greatest accomplishment.” But Brandon learned some of his greatest lessons with a loss. He remembers losing against Westfield his sophomore year. It was the last drive of the game. Brandon threw an interception, and the game was over. He learned to keep building his confidence, even after a defeat.

12 / AVON MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016 / AvonMagazine.com

Through wins, losses and injuries, Brandon has faced many challenges. Physically, it’s communication and accuracy. Mentally, it’s the challenge of trying to coordinate the big picture of the games. But the pressure of the crowd never really gets to Brandon. “Honestly, I don’t feel pressure. I don’t notice a crowd. I just kind of zone out,” he says. Brandon is so cool on the field that his performance seems effortless. “When he was younger, I used to get on him because I didn’t think he was trying,” recalls Dave. “He was; he just made it look so easy and smooth. It just flows.” Avon Coach Mark Bless agrees: “Brandon is very driven to succeed. He is pretty laid back off of the field, but he turns into a football superman on the field.” Coach Bless is quick to name Brandon’s accomplishments: all-state teams, U.S. Army All-American All Star Game and Indiana’s Mr. Football. And Brandon is quick to thank Coach Bless who taught him to be a leader on and off the field. “He was like my dad,” he says. Like many of his peers and coaches, Bless notes that Brandon credits many of his accomplishments to his fellow players.

“He will fight tooth and nail for his teammates,” says Coach Bless. Brandon is all about his teammates. When he realized he had received the Mr. Football Award, he was worried more about his team. “I never wanted to be a superstar. I just wanted to be a great teammate,” he says. “I was definitely excited, but at the same time, I was just proud of my team; without them, I wouldn’t be there.” Dave credits Brandon’s success not just to the team but also the entire program. “Those awards don’t represent my kids; they represent the Avon community.” Brandon left Avon High School with a 3.5 GPA, moving to Ann Arbor to begin school at the University of Michigan. His father notes that Brandon had over 20 offers from different universities but ultimately embraced the Wolverine football tradition. “I just really liked the coaches and the amount of professional

experience they had,” says Brandon. While undeclared, Brandon hopes to pursue a career in athletics, perhaps sports management. He looks forward to more improvement under coach Jim Harbaugh. “Brandon’s challenge was to come out of his shell and be more verbal,” says Dave who notes how much Brandon has grown over the summer. “That’s the one thing they’re working with him on at Michigan.” Brandon is committed to improving, leading his team and finding joy in the intricate teamwork of the game and in the simple act of throwing a completion. In times of stress, Brandon thinks about how far football has taken him. He thinks about his family. He thinks about his coaches. And he thinks about his teammates who are watching their quiet leader. “Take full advantage and do what you love,” he says. And that’s a piece of advice everyone should take to heart.

I never wanted to be a superstar. I just wanted to be a great teammate.

"I come here and work part-time at the Fuel games and in the Youth arena. The crowds are always easy to deal with, and I like being a part of the fun staff that goes on here.” Farmer stressed that the biggest thing for him to remember is to just drive slow and turn right. “That's a big one,” Farmer said. “I'm really glad I don't drive this at the horse shows. "I'm blessed to be with this team, and I'm really enjoying this third season. We have the greatest fan base, and I love talking with them. There is a real party atmosphere before and during the games. There are a lot of interactive things going on such as the face painting, bidding for jerseys and hitting a tennis ball into a goal. It's a lot of fun." Allan, who is also the emcee for The Indianapolis Indians, said staying busy works for him. "It doesn't leave me with a lot of time to get into trouble," he laughed as he gave a fan a high five. "I enjoy talking to them and getting everyone excited about the games, the entertainment and everything we have to offer."

NITRO IGNITES THE CROWD

I'm excited from the time the doors open until they close."

No one gets Fuel fans riled up the way Nitro, the team mascot, does. He knows how to mingle and get everyone fired up about the games.

Nitro says he doesn't have any trouble getting around the ice rink or the coliseum.

"The best part of being Nitro is being a part of the game itself," Nitro said in a recent interview. "I love the noise, the crowds, the music, the team and the whole experience.

"I just use my eyes and look for fans," he laughed. "I am pleased that everyone is happy to see me. Kids are always excited to see me and want to chase after me. That's

great because I'm like a big kid myself." Nitro likes to keep his true identity as secret as he can. He says he's like a super hero. He wants to keep people guessing. He's usually good at getting around, but he does have a mishap now and then. "I fell down behind the Zamboni machine one night, hit the wall and fell down. I had a hard time getting back up, and the audience roared with laughter. They loved it. I grabbed on to the back of the Zamboni and was dragged across the ice. They laughed even more." Nitro, who graduated from the University of Arkansas, said he hasn't seen the Netflix comedy "Mascots" yet, but he says many of his mascot buddies appear in it. "I would really love to see it," he stated. "I've heard it's very funny. I hope it shows how much fun it is to be a mascot."

PILOTING FROM WAY UP HIGH

Spencer Stevens has a bird's eye view of all the Fuel game intermissions from his post in the rafters. He watches from a lofty position as he pilots a 16-foot blimp with his remote control. "The crowd loves it, and I enjoy looking for a fan who is not paying attention, so I can land the blimp near his or her head," Stevens said. "I also fill the blimp with prizes and drop free tickets, Chickfil-A gift cards and Community Health Network information. I also chase after Nitro and hit him in the back of the head with the blimp." Stevens works at Hobby Shop RC (Radio Control), 1102 S. Franklin Rd., Suite A, Indianapolis. He pilots the blimp with his dad, Marty, and John Gaither, who also pilots a blimp at the Indianapolis Colts games.

etired U.S. Army Brigadier General Chet Wright recently celebrated his 98th birthday. He is a 1936 graduate of Ben Davis High School. At the time of Wright’s graduation, the school had 400 students. It is now among the largest high schools in the state. “I’ve witnessed a lot of change to this area in my lifetime,” states Wright, who grew up in Avon and has lived here for nearly a century.

Wright was sent to the South Pacific in 1943 for over three years. He served in combat in New Guinea and the Philippines as well as Luzon. Known as the “Avengers of Bataan,” Wright’s unit supported the infantry in the Battle for the return of Bataan.

The 38th Infantry Division were exposed to 115-118 degree heat and rain with little to no field rations. When Wright left for the South Pacific, he weighed 170 pounds. When he returned home, he weighed 128. “It’s hot, people are shooting at you and it makes you During the Great Depression, his family was hit hard by the economic lose weight,” states Wright, who does not recommend that type of weight loss strategy. circumstances of the time, losing their home. Not able to afford college, Wright got a job after graduation. He worked at the Gibson Wright’s prior employer, the Gibson Company, hired him back. Company, an auto parts manufacturer, earning $12.50 per week. Not long after, Wright received a call requesting his involvement with organizing the Indiana National Guard. Wright was hired Wright worked at the Gibson Company for four years before registering for the draft. “My boss called me in and said I was up for full-time, retiring as a Brigadier General. Earning a red stripe up the side of his pants just as the rest of the men who served in a promotion, but that I was going to be drafted, and they couldn’t invest any more in me until I got my military service out of the way, artillery, Wright made his way up the ranks. so I enlisted for one year,” recalls Wright. His active duty period “I’m a Senior Red Legs,” states Wright, proudly. He’s been a lasted a bit longer than expected. leader of the Senior Red Legs organization, which has over 200 In January of 1941, then Private Chet Wright reported to Camp members. Once a year, there is a Senior Red Legs reunion at Camp Atterbury. Shelby in Mississippi. As a recruit, he earned $21 per month. During his time at Camp Shelby, he participated in the largest “General Chet Wright is the truest example of a Hoosier Soldier and Army training exercise in history. The U.S. Army CHQ Maneuvers Patriot,” says Veteran Events coordinator Jill Fewell. “We all owe a of 1941 lasted three months and extended across Louisiana, debt of gratitude for his many years of service and sacrifice to make Mississippi and Texas. Wright was a member of the 139th Field our Hoosier State safe.” Artillery Battalion, 38th Infantry Division.

“At night, I take off my glasses, my hearing aides and my partials, and there’s more of me on the nightstand than in the bed!” jokes Wright. Wright and his beautiful wife Velma married on July 4, 1941. They have three sons – all of whom are veterans – as well as six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 3½ great-great-grand children. Wright and his wife raised their boys in Plainfield. When they moved there, the population was 1,800 in 1947, and now the number has climbed to over 30,000. Velma passed in 2001, missing their 60th wedding anniversary by less than six months. A surprising honor bestowed upon Chet Wright is that his likeness was used by the Town of Avon on their WWII Memorial. Sculptor Bill Wolf created a 6’1” likeness of Chet Wright, forever immortalizing the Brig. General. The World War II Memorial Park is at the northwest corner of the roundabout at Dan Jones Road and County Road 100 South. “One of the town managers called me and said, ‘We understand that you were in WWII’ and asked me to serve on the committee,” says Wright. “I missed one meeting and found out later my likeness would be used for the statue. I never missed another meeting.” When asked for his advice to younger generations, Wright says, “Accept responsibility and do what you’re told.”

PURDUE UNIVERSITY CREATES STEM INSPIRED HIGH SCHOOL IN INDIANAPOLIS Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies

On October 3, 2016, Purdue University announced the launch of a unique partnership between Indianapolis Public Schools and the city of Indianapolis that will result in a STEM focused charter school. Purdue Polytechnic High School which will be an IPS Innovation Network School, will open in the Fall of 2017. Purdue President Mitch Daniels said, “We thank IPS and the city for the partnership, which we hope will build a new pathway to Purdue and to successful careers for future students from downtown Indianapolis. Students enrolled in the school, which will be located in the former PR Mallory building at 3029 E. Washington Street but during renovation of that location, the inaugural class will have temporary residence nearby at 201 S. Rural Street.” Mayor Joe Hogsett is thrilled for the partnership and investment Purdue is making in the community. “When the doors to the

school open in a little more than a year, we will be doing more than merely putting Indianapolis kids in a high quality educational environment, we will be heling the Young mean and women from Englewood and other Eastside neighborhoods reach their full potential, prepared for today’s fast-moving economy.” IPS Superintendent, Lewis Ferebee is thrilled with the partnership and shared that, “it is certain to have a profound impact on IPS students, our educators and our community.” He further added, “With the expertise of Purdue’s faculty and research, we have the opportunity to inspire students and unlock their limitless potential.” The school has been in the development stage for over a year. The high school curriculum will mirror the Purdue Polytechnic Institute on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus and will serve as a pipeline to the college. Applications are available through the high schools website at https://pphsi.purdue.eud/(Https://pphsi.purdue.edu/) and are being accepted from October 3, 2016 through February 3, 2017. Students who live within IPS boundaries will have first preference for spaces.

Q & A WITH AVON TOWN COUNCIL MEMBER AARON TEVEBAUGH WHAT IS YOUR POSITION WITH THE TOWN OF AVON? I began my first term on the council in January of 2015. I currently serve as the Council Vice President and liaison to the Public Works Department and Economic Development Commission. WHAT LED YOU TO RUN FOR THIS POSITION? I served four years on the Avon Redevelopment Commission prior to my time on the council. This position gave me a good perspective on the needs of the community as a whole. I became very interested in helping Avon move forward. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CAREER AS AN IMPD DETECTIVE AND HOW LONG YOU’VE BEEN THERE? I have been very fortunate to serve a dual role in public service. I joined the Indianapolis Police Department, now IMPD, in 2000 after spending nearly three years as a reserve deputy for the Marion County Sheriff’s Department (MCSD). I am currently assigned to the Office of Career and Leadership Development (CLD). The anchor project of the office is the IMPD Leadership Academy which is a nationally recognized leadership development program. The office is also responsible for projects such as college and university partnerships, continuing education opportunities and teaching introductory leadership courses to recruit officers and high school students in and around Indianapolis. I embrace being a full-time student of leadership and enjoy the study of human behavior as well as exploring its application to all professions and to life in general. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE IMPD? I was a lost college student in 1998, trying to decide what I would do in life. I stumbled into the MCSD Reserve Academy and found police work was something that was a good fit for me and something I had great passion for as well.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I am originally from the small Hendricks County farm town of Belleville. I moved to Speedway as a teenager and graduated from Speedway High School in 1995. We decided to move our family to Avon in 2010. TELL ME ABOUT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR CAREER. I have been fortunate to enjoy the last 18 years working in law enforcement and meeting so many helpful and influential people. One incident I will always remember is closing down a drug house in an area of Indianapolis that was infested with narcotics and prostitutes. I was a young officer at the time but understood the residents in the area were mostly hard-working families that had been there for several generations. When the subjects from the house were being walked out to the jail wagon, I noticed several of the neighbors who were sitting on their porches stood up and began applauding. I was very moved by this act, and it was through this incident that I began to understand the actions of one person absolutely can make a difference.

HAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU IN W BOTH ROLES? My responsibilities in the CLD Office keep me busy for my entire day. I try to make it home for dinner or meet the family out to eat most weekdays. My evenings are generally occupied with council meetings, events, phone calls and emails. Many evenings are also spent taking my daughters to their activities and spending time outdoors as much as possible.

TALK ABOUT A TIME WHEN YOU MADE A MISTAKE IN YOUR CAREER. I spent several years of my younger life inundated with completing tasks and meeting goals that I believed at the time were of the utmost priority. What I was missing all of these years was the importance of having positive relationships with people. I couldn’t see at the time that I was the issue in many of my own problems. Once I came to understand the concept of unconditional self-

36 / AVON MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016 / AvonMagazine.com

accountability and seeing people as people, I began to open up to a whole new perspective on life. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT AVON? I thoroughly enjoy the sense of community and small town values with the convenience of everything at your fingertips as well as the great sense of unity. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. I have been married to my best friend Krista for the last 11 years. We have two daughters, Ella, 8, and Kaylin, 4. We also have four beagles that make our family complete. WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX? I love spending time with my family, especially doing outdoor activities. We love to spend time on trails and in the woods enjoying nature to the fullest. Some of our favorite activities are hiking wooded trails, playing disc golf at Avon Town Hall Park and fishing in our super top secret Avon location! ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ANY COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS? I have coached soccer for the Avon YMCA each spring for the last five years. I was a member of the Avon Rotary Club from 2010-2016.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? I really enjoy traveling and spending time with my family, especially doing outdoor activities. We have a great time exploring the sites around Indiana and searching for rare opportunities to spot wildlife. I also enjoy vacationing to warm destinations and eating at local “Mom and Pop restaurants anytime I am on a trip. Now that I am nearing my 40th birthday, I have to be a little more selective with my eating habits! I am also a Dallas Cowboys football fan. This is something I receive a great amount of grief for from multiple people around this time every year! HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUR YOUNGER SELF? Seek out great mentors early in life. Separate yourself from the negativity and constantly challenge yourself to move out of your comfort zone to grow and develop. View issues in life as invitations to solve problems and gain experience. Understand the value in change and its potential for personal growth. WHAT IS YOUR MAIN GOAL FOR THE FUTURE? Enjoy every day of life to the fullest, help my daughters to accomplish great things in their lives and leave the Town of Avon in a better place than when I arrived.
