Scrumptious SLICES

CHICAGO’S PIZZA IS BECOMING A SAVORY STAPLE IN LEBANON

Having opened in September 2024, Chicago’s Pizza in Lebanon is serving quality, Chicago-influenced pizza to Boone County.

Being part owner of Chicago’s Pizza in Speedway, Brad Meyers knows firsthand the level of service and quality of products that Chicago’s Pizza offers, and wanted to bring this Chicago-inspired concept to Lebanon.

“Chicago’s Pizza offers such great, quality food and service,” Meyers says. “Each Chicago’s Pizza is individually owned, giving it a family feel, and they are very involved in their community.”

Meyers, who currently lives in Pittsboro, says he chose to open a Chicago’s Pizza in Lebanon because he loves the area’s smalltown charm and community feel.

With their extensive pizza menu, Chicago’s Pizza offers an affordable way to feed a family or large gathering. “Pizza is comfort food,” says Meyers. “Everybody likes it.”

At Chicago’s Pizza in Lebanon, there are pizza options for everyone. Meyers says the create-your-own option is great because people can customize and choose their own crust, toppings and sauce. Customers can choose from crust options that include

traditional hand-tossed, deep-dish, crispy thin, or almost-gluten-free cauliflower crusts.

There are plenty of topping options to choose from, including meat options like

pepperoni, sausage, Italian Sausage, ground beef, ham and bacon, as well as veggie toppings like tomatoes, green peppers, mushrooms, black olives, pineapple, banana peppers, jalapeños, onions and spinach. Customers even have the option of replacing pizza sauce with barbecue sauce, ranch dressing and buffalo sauce. With all of these options, people have the ability to design their perfect pie.

Chicago’s Pizza Lebanon also has unique specialty pizzas. Options include the BBQ Bacon Burger, featuring barbecue sauce topped with ground beef, bacon, onions, and a blend of mozzarella and cheddar jack cheeses. The Chicken Prime is an olive oil and sauce-based pizza with chicken, mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, and a pinch of garlic salt.

A trip to Chicago’s Pizza Lebanon wouldn’t be complete without their Cinnamon Dessert Pizza or their famous breadsticks, served with two sides of either marinara sauce, nacho cheese, cheddar cheese or garlic butter.

Recently added to the Chicago’s Pizza Lebanon menu are the Stromboli, Meatball Italiano, and Grilled Chicken sandwiches. The Stromboli is made with crumbled pork sausage, onions, mozzarella cheese and pizza sauce. The Meatball Italiano features meatballs, green peppers, onions, marinara and mozzarella cheese. The Grilled Chicken sandwich has grilled chicken, mozzarella cheese and honey Dijon mustard. Meyers is excited to offer these freshly made sandwiches and says they make great lunch options.

Chicago’s Pizza Lebanon also has a daily lunch special that includes a 9-inch onetopping pizza, a half order of breadsticks, and a 20-ounce drink for $12.50, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It’s located at 324 South Lebanon Street, you can visit Chicago’s Pizza Lebanon’s website at chicagospizza.com/locations/ lebanon, or call 765-859-3248 to place your order today. Also visit them on social media for menu, deal and promotion updates.

Boone County offers the perfect blend of rustic charm and scenic beauty, making it an unforgettable destination for any couple’s special day. With a range of elegant indoor spaces, picturesque barns, and venues nestled in nature, Boone County provides the ideal backdrop for weddings all year long. The county also boasts a host of exceptional services to ensure your wedding is a seamless experience from the planning stages, all the way up to the big day.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

Brick Street Bridal, located on Zionsville’s historic Main Street, offers a personalized and stylish approach to wedding fashion for both men and women. The boutique, owned by Natalie Miller, was born out of a passion for fashion and a desire to return home to Indiana. After earning a degree in Fashion Design, Natalie’s sister suggested opening a bridal shop. With encouragement from loved ones, she pursued her dream. “I was enjoying living in Indiana again... and it was my eldest sister who saw me working in the wedding industry,” Natalie shares.

Specializing in wedding dresses, veils, accessories, and jewelry, Brick Street Bridal

also partners with Generation Tux to offer rental and purchase options for tuxedos and suits. They can also help with steaming services for any occasion.

Having grown up in Zionsville, Natalie has a deep love for Boone County. “Zionsville is home.” she reflects. “Boone County is bigger and better than expected in my opinion. It reminds me of a Hallmark town.”

With a close-knit community, Boone County blends small-town charm with big-city access, offering everything couples need for their weddings. As Natalie puts it, “There’s no need to search high and low. Everything you need to complete your wedding is possible to find in Boone County. “

MAKE YOUR WEDDING BLOSSOM

Blooms By Dragonfly, also located in the charming town of Zionsville, offers stunning floral arrangements for weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, events, and everyday occasions. Owner Wendi Louks started the shop to blend her love for flowers with a passion for working

closely with the local community. “I love celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, weddings but yet also helping to share a little love in the tough moments of life as well.” Wendi shares.

Blooms By Dragonfly works closely with renowned Boone County venues such as Holliday Farms and The Sixpence, to ensure that every floral detail complements the couple’s vision. Their high quality florals and unique designs help to bring beauty and color to weddings and events. They provide daily floral delivery in the area and pickup as well.

Zionsville has been the perfect place for Blooms to grow and flourish. “I chose Zionsville for its small town but big personality charm.” Wendi says. “The community is fabulous about supporting small businesses.” Wendi describes Zionsville as “a beautiful downtown with many local restaurants and shopping and all that you need to create the perfect day.”

STUDENT SUCCESS

INDIANA HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS TO TAKE EFFECT IN 2029

Student success means different things to parents, educators, students and leaders. For most, that success is demonstrated with a high school diploma showcasing certain academic achievements. What we previously knew as Core 40 and Academic Honors will look very different for the graduating classes of 2029 and beyond.

According to Indiana State Board of Education statistics, the rate of high schoolers attending college upon graduation has declined in recent years - 9% between 2016 and 2021. A nearly one-third (32%) chronic absenteeism rate in grade 12 was logged for the 2023-2024 school year.

To help promote better post-graduation readiness, high school diplomas in Indiana will feature readiness seals intended to show a student’s proficiency in selected areas. Dr. Katie Jenner, Indiana secretary of education, said these changes are intended to “make the four years of high school as valuable as possible for students and better connect them to their unique future goals.”

The readiness seals are divided into three categories to signify preparedness for

employment, enlistment or education. Six options are available with two levels offered under each category. College readiness will be shown via the seals for enrollment honors and enrollment honors plus. Employment readiness will appear via the employment honors and employment honors plus seals. Finally, military readiness appears via the enlistment honors and enlistment honors plus seals.

These seals were developed in conjunction with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, The Indiana Chamber of Commerce and the Indiana National Guard.

Although families have expressed concern over the changes, Rebecca Coffman, superintendent for Zionsville Community Schools, and other leaders, want to put concerns at ease.

“There are big decisions being made by incoming freshmen,” Coffman said. “We’re really emphasizing for students and families that we want to maintain as many opportunities as possible. We’ll make sure they maintain maximum flexibility as they move through their high school experience.”

The new standards are intended to support students with better readiness strategies before they realize their post-graduation plans aren’t feasible. One major area of concern for educational leaders is the additional work-based hours that are encompassed in the new requirements.

“One of our biggest hurdles is getting people who are willing to take our kids into their business and industry, and help them grow, learn and understand the qualifications they need to succeed in a workplace setting,” said Rob Ramey, superintendent of Western Boone County Community School Corporation.

The new standards could potentially require between 75 and 650 work-based hours for students seeking a particular pathway.

“We’ve put a lot of information out for families to have as resources,” says Jon Milleman, superintendent for Lebanon Community School Corporation. “There’s information available online that wasn’t previously available. Rest assured, we’re still meeting with students in person to

ensure they understand their options too. And we now have software for our students to help them track their graduation process.”

Educational leaders also stress the importance of parental conversations during this transition.

“Have discussions with your children about potential career paths,” Ramey said. “There’s often a perception that everything falls back on schools, but we need help from everybody to make this work: business, industry, parents, everybody. Working together, this isn’t anything that can’t be achieved.”

All three leaders agree that while the transition may be rocky at first, schools are dedicated to helping students navigate their choices with full confidence.

“We want to reassure families that educators are all here to make sure our students have quality experiences and opportunities, and we are dedicated to making sure that all students are wellprepared for what’s next,” said Coffman.

LOFTY GOALS

ERON HARRIS FINDS FULFILLMENT AS A BASKETBALL COACH, PLAYER AND MENTOR

In the world of sports, few stories capture the balance of perseverance, passion, and giving back, quite like that of Eron Harris, a Lawrence North High School graduate, professional basketball player, and coach. From his humble beginnings as a lightly recruited high school athlete to his current role as a player for Lebanon Leprechauns in The Basketball League (TBL), his journey showcases the power of hard work and determination.

Graduating from Lawrence North in 2012, Harris played basketball all four years but wasn’t heavily recruited until his senior year. He says he exploded out of nowhere. Harris credits standout performances in tournaments for opening the doors to a collegiate career. He first played at West Virginia University under Head

Coach Bob Huggins and later at Michigan State University for Tom Izzo, where he experienced high-level coaching and personal growth.

“It was a dream come true,” Harris says. “I found myself, as a player and a man.”

His college career wasn’t without setbacks, though. During his senior year, a devastating knee injury during a game against Purdue ended his season prematurely. Harris tore his ACL and PCL while also dislocating his knee, and the injury was so intense that YouTube removed the video. Despite the hardship, he refused to let the injury define him, pushing forward with grit and determination.

After college, he embarked on a professional

basketball journey, starting in the NBA G League with the Wisconsin Herd. He transitioned to Europe, playing in Finland, Norway and Macedonia before the pandemic unexpectedly paused his career. He’s currently in his second year with the Lebanon Leprechauns, embracing the unique structure of TBL.

The league, which features a three-month regular season beginning March 3 and region-based competition, is designed to balance high-level basketball with a strong sense of community engagement. Harris says they play teams in their region, and if a team makes it to the playoffs, they begin playing in other regions.

Beyond his professional career, Harris has found purpose in coaching. He started

with a girls varsity team at Thrival Indy Academy before taking on a role at Arsenal Tech High School, where he’s been for three years. Now the junior varsity boys head coach, he also serves as a behavior specialist, working closely with students to ensure their academic and personal success. While playing for the Lebanon Leprechauns, Harris is deeply committed to supporting his players at Arsenal Tech. He says he focuses on his players’ growth on and off the court, and their mental health.

As the Lebanon Leprechauns gear up for their upcoming season, excitement is in the air. Though the roster isn’t finalized,

Harris is optimistic about the upcoming season. He says the team’s energy is infectious, and the team’s home games at the Farmers Bank Fieldhouse are a can’t-miss experience, calling them one of the most exciting local sports presentations outside the NBA.

With his story of resilience, dedication and community impact, Harris is more than just a basketball player. He’s a role model, mentor, and proof that hard work can turn dreams into reality. He says for basketball fans, a trip to a Leprechauns

pack

game is a chance to see talented athletes and connect with a league that values giving back as much as winning.

EMMA WESTFALL

Emma Westfall, a seventh-grader at Zionsville Middle School, has recently been recognized as one of only five middle school students across Indiana to receive the prestigious Youth Power and Hope Award from Indiana Electric Cooperatives. This award honors students in grades five through eight who are passionate about community service and volunteerism.

Her path to this honor began while volunteering at the Zionsville Food Pantry, where a staff member encouraged her to apply for the award. “I like volunteering,” she says. “It makes me feel good knowing I can make a difference in someone’s day.”

Emma’s commitment to her volunteer work is remarkable considering her young age. Despite her academic and sports commitments, she always finds time to give back to her community, setting a remarkable example for her peers.

She has devoted countless hours to helping her community through various organizations in Indianapolis and the surrounding areas. At the Zionsville Food Pantry, she sorts and organizes food donations and prepares boxes for needy families. At Wheeler Mission’s Center for Women and Children, she serves dinner and even hosts games during events like their Fall Festival.

Another favorite volunteer site for Emma is the Humane Society for Boone County, where she reads to cats, creates treats for animals, and helps with cleaning and organizing supplies. Though being around shelter animals can sometimes be emotional, she says she finds joy in knowing she’s making their lives a little brighter.

Emma’s service and commitment to creating a better community doesn’t stop there. She also volunteers with Safety Town, a program for incoming kindergarteners to teach them about road safety, seatbelt use and riding the school bus. Additionally, she contributes her time to the Indiana Diaper Bank, helping to sort and package diapers for needy families.

Despite her packed schedule, she manages to balance her volunteer

work with school and soccer by planning around her breaks, and dedicating weekends and evenings to community service. She often spends Friday nights at Wheeler Mission. “I like interacting with people,” she said. “It’s important to me to know I can make a difference.”

Emma’s mother, Krista Westfall, is proud of her daughter’s accomplishments and dedication. “Emma is very humble,” Krista

says. “Her volunteering allows her to see how others live and understand the importance of helping others.” Krista and her husband emphasize the value of being servant leaders and leading by example. The Westfall family regularly volunteers at Wheeler Mission together.

Emma received her Youth Power and Hope Award at a special banquet on December 9, where she was honored alongside other outstanding young volunteers. She was thrilled to be recognized for her hard work and commitment to serving her community.

Emma’s plans to continue her service are not just a personal commitment, but a promise to further her impact on the world. Her story is a powerful reminder of how one person’s dedication can inspire others and create meaningful change. For Emma, the message is simple and profound: “I like knowing I can make someone’s day better.”

FLAIR FOR FINANCE

INNOVATIVE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS BRINGS SENSIBLE INVESTMENT STRATEGIES TO THE TABLE

For many individuals and families, planning for the future can feel overwhelming. From managing investments to preparing for retirement, the financial landscape is full of complexities. That’s where experienced financial advisors like Steve Meier at Innovative Financial Solutions can step in, guiding clients through the ever-changing world of financial planning.

With over two decades in the industry, Meier has built a reputation for helping clients achieve long-term financial security. Partnering with Commonwealth Financial Network, his firm manages over $1 billion in assets across four offices in Indiana and Florida. Recently recognized by Forbes as one of Indiana’s top wealth management firms, his team is dedicated to helping families and businesses make informed financial decisions.

“This is easily the best company I’ve ever worked with,” Meier says. “They are really good at what they do, and the level of support they provide to our team and clients is unmatched.”

What sets his firm apart is its multigenerational approach. Many clients first come in as they near retirement, seeking guidance on whether their savings will sustain their lifestyle. However, the relationships evolve over time, often

extending to their elderly parents and adult children.

“I’ve been in the business long enough now that we’re working with third, and even fourth, generations in some families,” Meier says. “We start with retirement planning, but soon we’re advising their parents on estate planning and helping their children with wealth accumulation.”

Financial planning looks different for every client, but the firm’s process remains the same: assess needs, set goals and create a strategy. For elderly clients in their 70s and 80s, the primary focus is preserving assets, covering medical costs and ensuring longterm care needs are met. Many are unaware of benefits they may be entitled to, such as military veteran support or Medicare strategies that can ease financial burdens.

For professionals in their 40s and 50s, the strategy shifts to wealth accumulation, tax-efficient investing and estate planning. The firm ensures clients not only grow their assets, but also protect them for future generations.

“When someone passes without proper estate planning, it can cost tens of thousands of dollars and take years to resolve,” Meier says. “Having the right documents in place is crucial to avoid unnecessary legal battles.”

Beyond working with families, the firm also assists small-business owners in structuring retirement plans for themselves and their employees. Many entrepreneurs underestimate the tax benefits and savings potential of the right retirement plan, and Meier’s team helps them maximize their contributions while staying compliant with regulations.

“We don’t actively seek business clients, but many come to us through referrals,” Meier says. “A well-structured retirement plan benefits both the business owner and their employees.”

In the age of online investing and doit-yourself financial planning, many individuals believe they can manage their finances alone. But as Meier says, most people don’t know what they don’t know.

“You might think you’re addressing all your financial needs, but without expert guidance, you could be missing key tax strategies, investment opportunities or ways to protect your assets,” Meier says. “A good financial advisor helps uncover risks and ensures your wealth works for you - not against you.”

Whether you’re nearing retirement, managing a business or simply want to ensure your financial future is secure, working with a trusted advisor can make all the difference.

“Anyone considering working with a financial planner should at least schedule a visit,” Meier says. “It’s worth seeing if expert guidance can improve your financial strategy.”

DOLLARS AND SENSE

THE CASE FOR ADDING FINANCIAL LITERACY COURSES IN SCHOOLS

Do you know how a 401(k) or a money market account works? If not, you’re not alone. Research from the International Federation of Accountants reveals a lack of financial literacy among adults costs the United States nearly half a billion dollars annually. Meanwhile, teens are navigating the education system without this crucial knowledge. The research shows only 23% of American teens know how to make a budget, 45% don’t understand 401(k) accounts or retirement savings, and 28% don’t understand taxes. These gaps highlight the need for financial literacy education in schools.

Junior Achievement of Central Indiana recently shared data underscoring that teens genuinely want to learn about these concepts before entering adulthood. In collaboration with research firm Big Village, a survey of over 1,000 teens aged 13 to 17 revealed that 68% would “likely” take a financial literacy class if offered. However, only 31% currently have the

option at their schools. Additionally, 60% of teens expressed interest in courses on career readiness and entrepreneurship.

“When you ask adults what they wish they learned in school but didn’t, it usually involves topics like understanding how money works,” said Jennifer Burk, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Central Indiana.

“These findings show that most teens today would like access to this information, but many may not be getting it.”

Junior Achievement offers educational experiences to students from kindergarten through grade 12, as well as young adults, with a focus on financial literacy, career readiness and entrepreneurship. These programs, often available at little or no cost to schools, reach more than 4.4 million students annually across the United States.

Through initiatives like these, Junior Achievement is working to bridge the financial literacy gap and empower the next generation to navigate their futures with confidence.

THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF BOONE COUNTY STAYS TRUE TO ITS MISSION AFTER NEARLY 35 YEARS

Writer / Melissa Gibson Photographer / Robert Jones

Since 1991, the Community Foundation of Boone County (CFBC) has played a vital role in strengthening the local community by awarding over $31.3 million in grants and scholarships, thanks to the generous support of individuals and businesses. But what makes the CFBC truly special is its ability to create lasting, meaningful impactsomething that might not always be clear to those unfamiliar with its work.

At the heart of the CFBC’s mission is its commitment to long-term, sustainable support. “We’re here to steward our funds for lasting impact,” says CEO Julie Reagan. “Unlike short-term donations, our endowments ensure that every dollar continues to grow, helping our community for generations to come.”

This is where the CFBC’s unique model stands out. When someone makes a donation, it doesn’t just provide immediate support; it grows over time. Through the foundation’s endowment system, donations are pooled and professionally managed to create permanent funds that provide ongoing support. For example, if someone is passionate about lifelong learning, health and wellness, or community connectivity, they can direct their gift to a specific organization, initiative, or a broader fund supporting those causes. Their donation will continue generating support for their specific area of impact for years to come, long after the initial gift is made.

“An endowment is a donation that we invest in our professionally managed fund pool, which currently totals nearly $37 million,” explains Reagan. “Each year we distribute a percentage of the fund’s balance while

ensuring its continued growth. For the past several years our annual payout rate has been 4%, and it will remain at 4% for 2025.”

Both short-term and long-term donations play a vital role in sustaining nonprofit organizations and improving our community for generations to come. At the CFBC, the mission is to help donors determine which giving approach best aligns with their philanthropic goals. Some donors seek to make an immediate impact, while others want to create a lasting legacy. For instance, a $50,000 donation to support local cancer patients can be used right away to meet urgent needs or invested in a permanent fund that will provide ongoing support for decades. No matter the giving path, every gift helps build a stronger, more resilient community.

But the CFBC’s strength goes beyond just financial stewardship; it’s also about the deep local connections that make it so effective.

“All of our team, board members, and volunteers live and/or work here,” says Reagan. “This is our home community and we understand its unique needs. We use this knowledge to guide our grant making, ensuring that funds are directed where they’re needed most.”

The CFBC partners with a wide range of local organizations including hospitals, schools, chambers of commerce, elected officials and nonprofits, which allows it to respond quickly to urgent needs. When a local crisis or opportunity arises, the CFBC is often the first place these organizations turn to for support.

“Being a trusted partner means we can help provide resources and funding when it’s most needed,” Reagan explains. “It’s this personal connection that makes CFBC so effective in addressing local challenges.”

Currently the CFBC’s Community Impact Fund, which addresses immediate community needs, is seeing a significant boost thanks to a $1.5 million matching fund grant as part of the eighth phase of Lilly Endowment Inc.’s initiative, Giving Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT VIII). The grant triples donations made to any current or new community impact fund, by matching $2 from the Endowment for every $1 donated. CFBC’s goal is to fundraise $825,000 by December 31, 2025.

“It’s an exciting time to contribute,” Reagan says. “Your gift is being tripled right now, and we’re very close to our goal, with only $250,000 left to raise this year.”

The demand for funding continues to grow. In 2024 the CFBC received more grant applications than funds available - a record number of requests.

“For our second grant cycle last year, we had 55 applications requesting $485,000, but we only had $220,000 to allocate,” Reagan explains. “While we were able to partner with other community organizations to meet some of these needs, it highlights the importance of donors stepping forward when they don’t know where to help.”

Looking ahead, the CFBC will offer two grant cycles in 2025: one for nonprofits launching new programs and another for organizations with no specific funding requirements. Additionally, the foundation

will introduce new programs aimed at education, networking and community development.

“We’re excited to relaunch the Boone County Leadership program this year,” Reagan says. “Since 1992 we’ve graduated over 300 alumni. Now, after a brief pause it will run annually, helping individuals who are passionate about making a positive impact in Boone County.”

In addition to leadership programs, the CFBC is partnering with the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy to offer a discounted, four-part fundraising course. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate in fundraising management, a valuable credential for professionals in the field.

Programs like Women of Impact will also continue to thrive, offering more opportunities to support nonprofits in Boone County.

“The beauty of a community foundation is its ability to maximize the power of giving,” Reagan says. “Our structure, based on endowments and strategic grant making, allows us to form deep relationships within the community, ensuring we can respond when needs arise.”

Through these initiatives and partnerships, CFBC is making a difference that goes beyond financial support. It’s about creating lasting change, building community connections, and ensuring that the needs of Boone County are met for generations to come.

A ROYAL TREAT

PIZZA KING OPENS IN JAMESTOWN

Having opened on November 11, 2024, Pizza King, an Indiana tradition since 1956, is once again serving the Jamestown community.

Michelle Standeford, the owner of the newly opened Pizza King in Jamestown, is excited to bring Pizza King back to the community

To Standeford, love of the “Friday night pizza night” tradition was a huge motivator to open Pizza King in Jamestown, a community of family-owned and small businesses. Growing up, she had fond memories of visiting the Pizza King in Lebanon, particularly when she would visit her grandparents on a Friday night before going to the auction house. As a parent raising her sons, Friday pizza night was a tradition at Pizza King along with sports games. Standeford wanted to create these lasting memories for her community.

“I hope that what I have built will carry on to my grandchildren and beyond,” says Standeford.

Having worked in addiction recovery for the last nine years, Standeford assisted women in recovery as a guiding and mentoring

figure who offered resources with the goal of reuniting women with their children. With a mental load weighing on her, Standeford wanted to find another way to help her community. With Pizza King Jamestown, Standeford gets the opportunity to employ people in recovery and those experiencing life difficulties, giving them a job to create stability.

“People smile when they pick up pizzas and it’s great therapy for me,” says Standeford.

Pizza might be just dough, sauce, cheese and toppings, but the Pizza King team sets itself apart from competitors with their pizza-making process. “We are edge-toedge sauce, cheese and toppings, and traditionally baked on large stones,” says Standeford. “The process we use to create the lightly salted crust has always been a draw - and the fact that we use only fresh pizza dough.”

The pizza comes in 7-, 10- or 14-inch sizes, with your own toppings or a choice of specialty pizzas. Cauliflower crust and crustless pizza are also options. The menu also includes breadsticks, salads, “subwiches”, which are freshly madeto-order sub sandwiches, as well as the additions of cheesy garlic sticks and chicken wings. Standeford says they will be

introducing new items over time.

Unique to Jamestown Pizza King, their dessert menu includes Cochran’s Cake Pops, cookies and cupcakes. Previously, Rodney

Cochran and his wife, Betty, opened Jamestown Pizza King/Cochran’s Pizza King in 1983 and operated it for 23 years with their two daughters, Amy and Beth.

“I appreciate the work that the Cochrans put into not only the Pizza King during their ownership, but the business they continue for our community through the bake shop and catering business,” says Standeford.

Since opening on Veterans Day, the community has been very receptive to Pizza King in Jamestown.

“We are very appreciative of the welcome we have received from local businesses, and of the support of our customers,” says Standeford. “We honestly have a community of persons that appreciate that we are here and they show their appreciation in their patronage.”

That community support also includes the generosity of local business Warren Mechanical, and an anonymous donor, who have provided over $500 worth of gift cards

for those in need.

Pizza King Jamestown is located at 49 West Main Street, and is open daily for call-ahead (765-676-1649) and online ordering. Current specials and promotions can be found on the Pizza King Jamestown website at jamestown.theoriginalpizzaking.com, and on social media.

IMMERSE YOURSELF WITH INDY DESIGN WEEK 2025

If you feel like you could use a little color and creativity in your life, you need to check out Indy Design Week [IDW]. Indy Design Week is a city-wide festival celebrating and elevating the Indianapolis design community. The event is creating an inclusive space for designers, creators, and enthusiasts to come together, share ideas, and explore new perspectives to create a lasting impact in Indy.

Indy Design Week is a celebration of all facets of design. This year’s event returns with a bold and thought-provoking

theme: Hues. Beyond highlighting color’s impact on design, IDW is celebrating the importance of diversity & inclusion in design, business, and society by showcasing unique perspectives & amplifying diverse stories in the community.

“For Indy Design Week 2025, we’re inviting the community to reimagine how color connects us,” says Tori Witter, Executive Director of Indy Design Week. “From its emotional resonance to its role in branding and storytelling, the power of color is universal, yet deeply personal. We’re excited

to see the speakers, workshops, and exhibits amplify this theme and help bring it to life.”

The seventh annual event is happening from April 21st through April 26th and will take place all over the city of Indianapolis to increase accessibility for attendees and showcase the incredible venues the city has to offer. Attendees can expect events varying from coffee meetups and hands-on workshops to creative talks and inspiring panels, and even an exclusive VIP kickoff party for sponsors, partners, and VIP ticketholders.

“We see Indy Design Week as the intersection for all the different areas of design,” says Witter. “We want inspire collaboration.”

With an extensive schedule of speakers, attendees will get inspired by presentations from creative leaders, such as Patrick Armstrong, host of the award-winning podcasts Conversation Piece and The Janchi (pronounced: JohnChee) Show, who will be leading a special IDW edition of AIGA Indy’s “Creatives in Color” series and 2025 keynote speaker Daniel Swartz, letterpress designer and printer and Founder of Hoosier Type Company, delivering his keynote address ‘Done is Better Than Perfect’.

“Every single person you’ll hear from is a local designer and innovative leader in their industry. Indy Design Week continuously wants to highlight the amazing stories of local creators and the work being done in Indy,” says Witter.

Hands-on workshops that demonstrate diverse design principles and encourage the learnings of new design skills have become paramount to this event. Workshop Night is expanding into Workshop Day—a full day of hands-on, interactive workshops at The Stutz, thanks to sponsor Griffy’s Art Supply. After being a standout event in 2024, this crowd favorite returns bigger and better on Saturday, April 26, closing out IDW with a bang. Alongside signature design workshops, we’re adding activities for all ages, from elementary to high school students. Workshop Day tickets drop next month—stay tuned!

Partnerships are essential for this organization. Indy Design Week focuses on giving back to the community, and the

group has been very fortunate on how much the community wants to give back. Local designer, illustrator and graffiti artist, Ess McKee, is donating a piece of original artwork which will serve as the official poster for Indy Design Week. The Buckingham Foundation rewarded IDW with a grant to support the new event software launching for the 2025 event. Indy Design Week will also be working with Second Helpings to limit food waste during the event and ensure leftover, unused food will be donated back to local neighbors in need.

At the end of the day, Indy Design Week wants to elevate the incredible design community that we have here in Indianapolis “With our 2025 theme Hues,

we really want to promote conversations about the role of cultural storytelling and how we can become better creatives through the power of community.”

Early-bird tickets are on sale right now for Indy Design Week. $100 for a VIP AllAccess ticket, which includes the VIP KickOff Party on Monday, April 21, and $80 for an All-Access ticket that gets attendees access to every event happening throughout the week.
