Pet Wellness Clinics Brings Pet Care to the Village Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
Pet Wellness Clinics has brought its special brand of unique and compassionate care to Broad Ripple. Opened in May at 1430 Broad Ripple Avenue, the full-service clinic offers every pet health need from grooming to any medical procedures. The goal of owner Dr. Mike Graves is to provide affordable and convenient care with a focus on prevention. “I always wanted to be in the medical field and I debated between being a human doctor or a pet doctor,” Dr. Graves says. “Pets make life so much better and sick humans can be cranky, so I chose to do something that puts a smile on my face every day. It’s just fun. I feel my job is to speak for pets to their owners. The animals can’t talk so I have to figure out what’s going on with them and communicate that to their owners. “We actually have been looking in Broad Ripple for the last two years to find a spot to have a clinic. I felt pet care was underserved in the community. People shouldn’t have to put their pet in the car and have to drive
several miles to get quality care. We are in a new building with plenty of easy parking and it’s right beside the dog park." The Broad Ripple location is offering new clients a complimentary veterinary exam for their pet. It boasts the same amenities as the seven other full-service veterinary facilities in the Pet Wellness Clinics family and will soon be joined by a Carmel clinic opening up in mid-June. Each offers complete veterinary care, including vaccinations, dental cleanings, digital X-rays and surgery. One aspect that sets Pet Wellness Clinics apart from other veterinary offices is their Pet Prime™ Membership program. Clients pay a yearly fee of $39.95 per month for unlimited office visits, vaccines and medication for fleas, ticks and heartworms. Instead of having to pay for important preventative care all at once, clients are able to budget for their pets’ health needs. Special pricing for some procedures is also included in the membership. “We are really client-focused,” Dr. Graves adds. “After we did a survey of our clients, we found that only 60% of them were giving their pets preventative medicines. They felt it was costprohibitive to buy a six-month supply of medicine a couple times a year. Some might have been purchasing flea or heartworm medicine from a big 5 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2020 / atBRip.com
box store, but our medication is much safer and is 99.9% effective. “Also, because of being hit with the cost all at once, clients weren’t getting all the vaccines their pet needed. They might choose just to get a rabies shot because it was too expensive to pay for all the vaccines at once. We designed Pet Prime because preventative care is so important and we wanted to find a way to make it affordable.” As an effort to keep clients safe and comfortable amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Pet Wellness Clinics has put accommodating procedures in place. One option is Telemedicine. Easily accessed from a smartphone, this app allows pets and their owners to have a virtual veterinary visit. Participants in the Pet Prime Membership program are granted unlimited Telemedicine appointments. Also available are curbside services for pet grooming dropoffs as well as office visits. If desired, clients can still enter the lobby as long as social distances procedures are observed. “The new location is bright, airy. It makes people smile and dogs wag their tails when they walk in. We want our clients and their pets to have a ‘Wow’ experience when they visit us,” Dr. Graves says. Pet Wellness Clinics Broad Ripple location is at 1430 Broad Ripple Avenue. For an appointment visit them online at PetWellnessClinics.com or call 317-588-8181.
Indy Resident & Former Marine Has a Community-Focused Mindset Writer / Kara Kavensky Photography Provided
Growing up in a large family in the Boston area, Stephen Foglio idolized Bobby Orr, who played for the Bruins from 1966-1976. He inspired just about everyone in New England to be a hockey fan. At the time Bobby Orr entered the NHL, it was a major accomplishment to score 20 goals in one season. During the 1970-71 season, Orr scored 139 goals. “When I say everyone [in Boston] played hockey back then, I mean everyone,” says Stephen, who is a lifelong hockey fan, player and coach.

In 1997, Foglio’s last assignment was to serve as the Marines’ liaison to the Defense Stephen grew up in Milford, MA, and went Finance Accounting Service at Ft. Benjamin to Norwich University. His father, Al Foglio, Harrison, here in Indianapolis. service after serving 20 years. Stephen and Brenda have two hockeyplaying sons, Luca and Theo. Theo plays for the Jr. Fuel and is a junior at Cathedral High School. Luca, a sophomore in college, plays club hockey at Miami of Ohio. Stephen, who sharpens skates in his basement, has coached both his boys in various capacities. Hockey is a family affair for the Foglios. It’s a huge commitment from a time and money standpoint. “Whatever is needed to help out the kids I will do it,” says Foglio, who would rather be involved than be on the sidelines. “Even if my kids retired from hockey tomorrow, I’d still be at the rink helping out. Just like my dad with Legion baseball.” Al Foglio was a baseball fanatic. Only one of his three sons played in Milford with Post59, a legion team. Al played softball and continued to volunteer with the club long after his boys were grown and dispersed around the world. Baseball was Al’s passion, similar to Stephen’s love of hockey. The brothers, and sister Maria, would discuss baseball and hockey with one another, for they all supported one another, regardless of interests. “Like his father, Stephen is also an incredible dad, husband and friend,” says Adam Gibson of Adam Gibson Design, a friend and former neighbor of the Foglios in Forest Hills. “He is generous to the core and dedicated to his family — and to the sport of hockey.” It was through coaching hockey where Stephen met Jeff West, a partner with Indy Performance Composites (IPC). IPC committed to making and donating 3D-printed headed sets for face shields for first responders to aid with the COVID-19 response. “Composites is the foundation of what we do,” says Stephen of Indy Performance

ach Deckard had been living in Indianapolis for several years, working hard at a full-time job, when he came to an important realization. A long-time artist, Deckard became aware that he hadn’t attempted anything in the artistic realm for quite some time and needed to find an outlet to do just that.
Zach Deckard
“I had been in Indianapolis for several years before moving to Broad Ripple and putting together a little home shop,” Deckard explains. “Being in the grind of a serious full-time job and the stresses of finding my direction had changed my overall happiness and even my personality. Constantly fighting to make life what I thought it should be rather than letting it flow was exhausting. Then I realized that I hadn't picked up an instrument, drawn or done anything creative in a long time.” Before long, Deckard had launched Reclaim Indy, an artistic endeavor for which he has created a diverse range of pieces from plaques to tables to beer tap handles — all from reclaimed materials sourced from areas around the city. “I turn Indianapolis salvage into functional art,” Deckard says. “What I build varies and I never want to get stuck in a rut. I generally like to use wood and metal. I’ve made tables, tap handles, signs, headboards, custom bars and more. All the materials used in my projects, with very little exception, come from right here in Indianapolis. Even hardware that I need to assemble items is purchased at a local hardware store rather than Amazon.” Deckard’s pieces can be found in bars and restaurants around the city, and he was commissioned to create a plaque for Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears. “I've always been happier when I was creating something,” Deckard says. “I thought it would be fun to repurpose salvaged materials from the city and give them a new life as something different. 11 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2020 / atBRip.com
Everything has value in the right context. Even something that was discarded. Reclaim Indy is an exercise in seeing the potential in things.” Deckard grew up near Nashville, Indiana, and says the local art scene, as well as artists in his family, became influences early on in his own artistic journey. “I was always intrigued by art and music,” he says. “Those are the things that universally make people happy in even the worst of times. I think I understood that very early on, being around musicians and artists in my own family and community. I was always drawing or playing an instrument as a kid, and in school I was generally in some kind of art or shop elective that allowed me to break out of the mold a bit and create something that wasn't predetermined by the curriculum.” Deckard appreciates working with oneof-a-kind, reclaimed items, as opposed to stock materials from big-box stores. “I love using things that have clearly had a life before and have had time to develop some patina,” he says. “You don't get the same feeling from something made out of wood from Lowe’s. I have no interest in building things that I've seen done already. The internet doesn't need another guy making cutting boards or blanket ladders and live laugh love signs.” Recently, Deckard has been busy fashioning bars out of bourbon and wine barrels acquired from a local brewer,

complete with features like lighting, USB ports and interior wine racks. "They make incredible conversation pieces in the home bar or business,” Deckard says of his repurposed barrels. “People really love them. I’ve enjoyed all my projects but this one has been the most complicated and satisfying to complete. Making tap handles was a blast as well. There’s nothing like walking into an Indy bar where your work is on display.”
Deckard says being involved in an artistic process can yield benefits on a personal and a community level, and he adds that the name of his own artistic endeavor is more than simply a nod to reclaimed materials — it also refers to reclaiming individuality and independence. “[Artistic expression] puts you in a good mental state,” he says. “In many cases, it requires you to spend time alone or at least quietly focusing on something you enjoy,
which allows for a lot of self-reflection as well as improvement in your craft. Personally, I'm happier having a creative outlet that is uniquely mine. It also allows me to interact with my community in new, useful and positive ways.” To learn more about Reclaim Indy and to inquire about commissions, search and follow Reclaim Indy on Facebook and Instagram or visit online at reclaim-indy.com.

Local Organization Connects Canines & People for Healing Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
No one anticipated a life that would involve nationwide closures, lockdowns and selfquarantines, but when it became clear that the 2019 novel coronavirus posed a major health threat, schools, families, businesses and individuals had to quickly adjust to living life from the inside. Self-isolation means many in-person meetings are impossible, and organizations that serve the public’s mental health have been forced to think outside the box. One such organization is Paws & Think, a community-based nonprofit that brings joy and healing to more than 60 program partners including schools, libraries, detention centers, humane societies, hospitals, cancer support centers and elder care facilities. The organization seeks to improve lives through the power of the human-dog connection, and finding ways to adhere to this mission was a tricky adjustment to make during the pandemic that has forced communities to socially isolate. Recognizing that mental health management is critical during this time, Paws & Think leaders have formulated alternative ways to serve the community in order to boost morale, ease stress and brighten spirits. “We know that now more than ever, people are in need of the love and comfort a dog can bring,” says Kelsey Burton, executive director of Paws & Think. For starters, the staff began creating and distributing activity books to hospital patients, teachers and other partners. Activities include crossword puzzles, word searches, and coloring sheets by local artist Gabriel Lehman.
Paws & Think representatives frequently visit the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, and when self-quarantining started the organization began filming prerecorded videos so that children can still see the therapy dogs. In the videos, the handler shares a personal message and the dog might do a trick, fetch a ball or simply stare into the camera looking cute. Paws & Think leaders are also filming videos for elder care facilities so patients can enjoy the company of their favorite four-legged friends. “These folks are very lonely right now,” Burton says. “Some of them can’t even come outside their rooms.” In addition, the staff has sent out greeting cards with pictures of therapy dogs on the front and a message on the inside reading, “Your therapy team sends you woofs and kisses.” 15 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2020 / atBRip.com
“We want them to know that someone is thinking about them because we know this is hard,” says Burton, adding that although meeting basic, everyday needs is important, mental health preservation during this difficult time is also crucial. “There is a huge need to combat the loneliness and sadness that comes with being alone, not to mention the uncertainty and upended routines. We want to make sure we are here to do what therapy dogs do best - bring love and comfort to those in need.” The organization also offers Paws to Read story time with a therapy dog. Though this event is usually held in person at libraries and schools, it has been offered via Facebook several times per week during social distancing. “There’s a big need for this now, with schools being closed,” Burton says. “Instead of the child reading to the therapy dog, the dog’s handler is reading to the children.” Teachers are sharing these story times with their districts. Local mom Jodi Snell
appreciates what Paws & Think leaders have done during the coronavirus outbreak to support the community. “Paws & Think has been an absolute gift to us during this time,” she says. “We’ve been able to take a break from the news and juggling e-learning while working from home, to enjoy story time with the adorable dogs as a family. Our boys felt super special when they
were able to ask questions on the Facebook Live feed and hear back from the Paws & Think team. In addition, we were able to integrate the coloring sheets into our daily activities, and we love a good coloring contest.” As the largest therapy dog organization in the nation, Paws & Think utilizes 130 therapy dogs of many breeds. Burton, a Westfield resident, has worked for national nonprofits

for 20 years and is grateful to be able to help locally. “This whole pandemic mess has been one of the reasons I love being local, because we’re able to quickly adapt to what our community needs,” she says. “The great thing about some of these programs we have implemented is that if we find people love them, we can continue them after normal life has resumed.” Research has shown that simply touching a therapy animal’s fur can reduce stress hormones and increase endorphin hormones. Paws & Think handlers have witnessed this transformation time and again. Burton shares the story of a little girl at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital who was battling cancer. One day, when the Paws & Think therapy team showed up, the girl’s mom warned them that she had just endured several tests and was not feeling well. “She’s not having it today,” the mom said. Yet when the girl saw her dog, she rolled over from facing the wall, got up, and came over to lay on top of the dog.

8 GREAT FISHING SPOTS AROUND INDY Writer / Wade Thiel Photography Provided
When the weather warms, flowers bloom and it has you itching to get outdoors, one thing you can try is fishing. Indianapolis and the surrounding area offers some excellent familyfriendly fishing locations if you’re interested in catch-andrelease fishing. Some locations will allow you to take what you catch, but if you’re just looking to get outside for some fun, there’s plenty of spots you can get your rod and reel out, even if you’re in the heart of the city. Knock the dust off your rod and reel, get yourself a fishing license and get ready to catch all the great fish Central Indiana has to offer. Here are fishing spots in and around Indianapolis you should give a try this spring. 1. RIVERSIDE PARK Located on the near west side of Indianapolis the park is bounded by 38th street to the north and 18th street to the south. It stretches along the White River, which you can fish. There’s also a pond close to the Family Recreation Center that you can fish. According to the DNR, at Riverside, you’ll find carp, catfish, crappie, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Riverside Park 2420 E. Riverside Dr. Indianapolis, IN 2. VIRGINIA B. FAIRBANKS ART & NATURE PARK Another great option close to Riverside Park is the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park: 100 Acres. Located at Newfields on 38th street, this 100-acre park offers a 35-acre lake that is perfect for fishing with the family. There are numerous spots along the lake’s shoreline where you can cast 19 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2020 / atBRip.com
out. You’ll find many of the same types of fish here as you will at Riverside as well as bluegill. Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park: 100 Acres 1850 West 38th Street Indianapolis, IN
3. MAROTT PARK Marott Park, located just north of Broad Ripple Village, is another spot for fishing the White River. You also have access to Williams Creek, which is fishable depending on the time of year. You can park at the parking area on College Ave. Another option is to park in
Broad Ripple and walk up the Monon Rail Trail to gain access to the park. Marott Park 7350 N College Ave Indianapolis, IN 4. POGUE’S RUN ART & NATURE PARK You’ve probably driven past Pogue’s Run Art and Nature Park and not even known it. The park is located on Indy’s east side just south of I-70. Pogue’s Run is a small creek that winds its way through Indianapolis. At the park, there are ponds and wetlands, which are perfect for catchand-release fishing. You’ll find mostly bluegill and bass here. Pogue’s Run Art and Nature Park 2300 Dequincy St Indianapolis, IN 5. FALL CREEK GREENWAY The Fall Creek Parkway Trail and Greenway runs from the intersection of E 25th St. and Meridian St. all the way to Fort Harrison State Park. Along this trail, there are numerous places where you can fish Fall Creek. Some of the best are up closer to Fort Harrison State Park where the creek passes by Lake Kesslerwood and Charlevoix Lake. There’s parking along the trail by Charlevoix Lake or you can park at the Skiles Test Nature Park and walk across Fall Creek Parkway to the trail to find a good place to fish. You’ll find the same fish species as you will in the White River in Fall Creek. Fall Creek Parkway Parking 6846-6998 E Fall Creek Pkwy N Dr. Indianapolis, IN 6. EAGLE CREEK PARK Looking for a large body of water to fish? The Eagle Creek Park is located around a large reservoir. There is a fee to get into the park and there’s a fee if you’d like to launch a fishing boat. It’s $5 per vehicle to enter the park and $3 per vessel. You don’t need a boat and can fish from the shoreline. You can also fish Lilly Lake and the Waterfowl

Sanctuary as long as you stay on the bank. According to the DNR, you’ll find bluegill, red-ear, carp, catfish, crappie, striped bass, largemouth bass and walleye in the bodies of water here. Eagle Creek Park Office 7840 W. 56th St. Indianapolis, IN 7. FORT HARRISON STATE PARK Ford Harrison State Park offers 1,700 acres of land. On those acres are a few lakes and creeks perfect for fishing. Delaware Lake is the first good option. There are also a few different ponds inside the park as well as Lawrence Creek and Fall Creek. You’ll find all of the same fish species here as you will in other Fall Creek fishing locations. Delaware Lake can be a little crowded at times, so be
ready to get to the lake early if you don’t want to fish the creeks. There is a $7 fee for entering the park. Ford Harrison State Park Entrance 6000 N. Post Road Indianapolis, IN 8. MEADOWLARK PARK Meadowlark Park, located in Carmel, might only be 17 acres, but it offers quite a lot, including one of the best fishing ponds near Indianapolis. The lake is 1.8 acres and offers plenty of shoreline to fish from thanks to its unique shape. The pond is stocked monthly in April and June, and you can expect to find channel catfish, bluegill, red-ear and largemouth bass. Meadowlark Park 450 Meadow Ln Carmel, IN
