KOMPOSE YOGA FITNESS GUIDE
QUITE A STRETCH KOMPOSE YOGA HAS SOMETHING FOR ALL SKILL LEVELS Writer / Shay McCoy Photographer / Michael Durr
found it difficult to continue these activities as an adult. She took her first class at kOMpose Yoga and felt extreme peace. She felt that she’d stumbled upon a place where she could realize, as she puts is, “how much movement meant” to her, leading her to take the teacher training courses kOMpose Yoga offered.
Yoga can seem unapproachable and difficult to some people, but luckily there are local yoga studios right in the Broad Ripple neighborhood whose owners make it their mission to educate and create opportunities for beginner and advanced practitioners alike.
During her training, Eisenmann realized opening her own studio was a major goal of hers. Throughout the process of taking ownership of the studio, she knew the opportunity was too good to pass on, even if it felt too good to be true most of the time. She saw that the kOMpose Yoga community was strong and tight-knit from the very beginning of her attendance, When Aimee Eisenmann took over ownership of kOMpose and wanted to continue to foster that sense of community Yoga, she wanted to maintain the vibe of the studio and cultivate for members. Eisenmann knows the community at kOMpose the community that had grown under the previous owner. She Yoga is different. and welcome new members. They even thanked her for taking ownership of the studio so it could stay open. Under Eisenmann’s leadership, kOMpose Yoga will continue to offer a wide variety of classes, and she trusts the instructors to teach their own styles. The studio offers alignment- and functionfocused yoga, yin yoga, vinyasa flows, and restorative sessions so all members can find a class, including on-demand and livestream options. There will also be a new, revamped schedule in January along with new options like couples yoga courses, prenatal classes,
kids classes, and an emphasis on yoga teacher training. The New to Yoga series will allow beginners to be in a safe space practicing at a much slower pace than most typical classes. Eisenmann is proud to be a part of the Broad Ripple community and is also excited to offer retail products from local businesses. kOMpose Yoga is located at 6201 Winthrop Avenue in Indianapolis. F45 TRAINING FITNESS GUIDE
FUNCTIONAL FITNESS MEMBERS GET A COMPREHENSIVE WORKOUT AT F45 TRAINING Writer / Shay McCoy Photographer / Michael Durr
Establishing a workout routine can be difficult, especially when schedules are busy and it feels like every new workout is complex with confusing equipment. However, the staff at F45 Training in Broad Ripple is all about getting back to the roots of athleticism and simplifying workout routines. Alex McKinley, head coach and manager of the downtown and Broad Ripple locations, grew up being heavily involved in athletics. After trying F45 classes on the north side and consulting with the owner, McKinley helped open the Broad Ripple location in May of 2020. McKinley explains that the “F” in F45 stands for “functional” and revolves around the movement involved in the workouts. F45 workouts have incorporated more than 6,000 different kinds of exercises and, as she says, “a lot of movements that translate into everyday life.” Each station has a circuit with screens members can refer to in order to follow along with the 45-minute classes. The 8 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2022 / BroadRippleMag.com
high-energy, dynamic workouts are fun for coaches and members alike, and the sense of community is strong since each F45 location across the country offers the same sets of workouts daily. McKinley enjoys the fact that workouts alternate between cardiovascular-heavy days - involving burpees, box jumps, ropes and more - and strength-training days that are slower and more focused, creating a challenging combination for members. She loves that F45 challenges members like athletes, but also provides a space for beginners to learn the movements safely and feel confident in their efforts. The Broad Ripple location offers prospective members a free seven-day trial to truly experience everything F45 has to offer with the alternating classes. McKinley loves that coaches can provide one-on-one training instead of being far removed from activities in class as members move about the floor. She says the Broad Ripple location has a more residential feel than the downtown location, and has gained popularity. Members have told McKinley they’d been wanting a location in the area. She has pride in the fact that F45 is different from other fitness studios in the market, and finds it fun to work out with the community in a dynamic way. Members are encouraged by McKinley and her team, motivating them when it seems difficult to get a workout in, and providing accountability that can lead to lasting results and a healthy life. F45 Training Broad Ripple is located at 1037 Broad Ripple Avenue in Indianapolis. For more info, call 317-352-5170 or visit f45training.com.

BARRE RIPPLE FITNESS GUIDE
RIPPLE EFFECT BARRE RIPPLE FOCUSES ON PHYSICAL AND MENTAL WELL-BEING Writer / Molly Dykstra Photographer / Michael Durr
10 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2022 / BroadRippleMag.com
llen Brown, owner of Barre Ripple, sees her fitness studio as more than just a place to get physically fit. It is a place to build a community that encourages people to feel better physically, mentally and spiritually. As these people share their newfound sense of wellness, they inspire others to reach for it as well. More and more lives are touched. As people continue to share their feelings with those around them, a ripple effect grows, encouraging people to be their best and offer their best to others. This idea can change the world for the better, but it all starts with one person, and their individual journey to wellness. This ripple effect is what inspired Brown to rename the studio, which was originally The Dailey Method, to Barre Ripple in September of 2021. While Brown has been teaching fitness classes for more than 15 years, her passion for wellness dates back much further. When she was 18, an injury from a car accident threatened her ability to maintain her active lifestyle. She realized it was up to her to find a way to heal and restore her sense of wellness. Through a combination of physical therapy, yoga and pilates, she eventually overcame her injuries. This sparked a lifelong passion to meet people wherever they are, physically and emotionally, and help them find ways to feel better. Barre Ripple, located in the heart of Broad Ripple at the corner of 65th Street and Carrollton Avenue, is the result of this passion. Brown and 11 other teachers offer classes in cycling, barre training, mixed workouts and cardiovascular training. These classes range from 30 to 60 minutes, and cater to a variety of experience levels from beginners to seasoned athletes. To accommodate a variety of schedules, classes start as early as 6 a.m. and generally let out no later than 7 p.m.

As with many fitness studios, Barre Ripple faced a unique challenge in 2020. Although they officially closed their doors to in-person classes the day before the mandated business shutdowns, Brown was not daunted by the challenge.
• Junk Removal • Light Hauling
“Just glide and pivot,” she says. “What else can we do to figure it out and to make it work?”
• Junk Removal
She quickly offered all Barre Ripple classes via Zoom, other than the cycling classes that require equipment, music and atmosphere to be effective. For these, the instructors transported the bikes outside so classes could continue. While in-person classes have restarted, the number of participants is limited out of an abundance of caution. They continue to be available via Zoom however, and many clients have grown to prefer the convenience of virtual classes. There are many reasons for this. One is the ease of early morning classes, without having to deal with getting kids up before the sun rises. Another is being able to attend classes with family and friends, even those who live out of state, to share the

We’re just trying to be a bright spot in your day, and I think people really feel that when they walk through the doors.” Th club was started by Jeff Edwards in 2008. members of varying skill levels who take part in two different programs: a CrossFitstyle program known as BR Fit, and a bootcamp-style program known as BRX. After Jeff started BRFC, the couple met at a bar in Broad Ripple. At the time he was looking to expand BRFC, and her father happened to have a space he was looking to rent out. “My father actually owns Howald Heating and Air Conditioning in Broad Ripple,” Howald Edwards says. “My [now] husband was looking to grow, and my dad wanted to rent out the space. I thought it was a terrible idea since we had just started dating.” Everything wound up working out, both for BRFC and for the couple, who are now married and run the gym together. “I had no idea when I grew up that I was going to be running a business with my husband, but here we are,” Howald Edwards says. In keeping with this theme of family, the BRFC team aims to give members a welcoming, supportive home to exercise and grow healthier together. “It’s a place where everybody feels welcome,” Howald Edwards says. “I really
pride ourselves in being a gym where nothing matters once you walk through the doors - your race, your gender, your sexual preference, how many dogs or cats you have, or whatever. When you get into the gym, it’s this community of people that come together and cheer each other on during the suffering workouts that you’re doing.” Since becoming involved with the gym, she has come to cherish the bonds she’s made with fellow gym members. “I’ve been there for 10 years,” she says. “Some people are still there that started with me 10 years ago. My favorite part has got to be watching the relationships that start and grow at the gym, and watching someone come out of their shell that maybe didn’t
really have a place before.” When members leave BRFC each day, the owners ultimately hope they feel empowered, worthy and loved, while also reaping the rewards of a stronger, healthier body. “It’s a place where everybody feels safe,” Howald Edwards says. “It’s a place where everybody is welcome. The perks are that you look really good, lose weight and gain strength.” Broad Ripple Fit Club is located at 6542 Westfield Boulevard in Indianapolis. STRENGTH FACTORY FITNESS GUIDE
STRENGTH FACTORY PERSONAL TRAINING STRESSES INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT
18 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2022 / BroadRippleMag.com
Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Michael Durr
At Strength Factory Personal Training, the staff puts a strong emphasis on the personal component of an individual’s fitness journey. “I really take pride in our workout and the personal part of it all,” says Founder Clarence Walton. “You can text me and talk to me about anything. We’re just here for you.” The establishment was started by Walton in 2012. Alongside his team of personal trainers, Walton aims to help clients achieve their fitness goals, from tailored exercise routines to need-specific nutritional programs to competition preparation. A native of Fort Wayne, Walton started training out of his garage in 1996. After moving to Indianapolis and working as a personal training director for LA Fitness, he decided to branch off and start his own gym, achieving a longtime goal.
“I always wanted my own gym,” Walton says. “I always wanted to be hands-on with people. I like human interaction. I like the results. I like seeing how people feel when they get results. They really feel good about themselves, and that’s a reward for me.” Since its humble beginnings, Strength Factory has grown along with its clients. “We’ve grown from two trainers to 12 trainers in the past 10 years,” Walton says. “We went from a 40-square-foot place to this 3,300-square-foot facility.” From the start, education has been at the heart of the facility. “The main thing I wanted to do was teach them how to live healthier,” Walton says of his clients. “At the big-box gyms they get away from educating and just go through the motions. I want to teach them how they can do it by themselves and educate them more on fitness.”
19 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2022 / BroadRippleMag.com
After clients first get in touch, Walton meets with them to make sure a fitness plan is catered specifically to their needs. This includes making sure a client is paired with the right trainer. “The first thing I have them do is come in for an assessment,” Walton says. “The assessment helps me to understand what level you’re on, how serious you are, if you have any injuries, your weight and stuff like that, and it helps me to get to know you so I can place you with the right trainer.” Every month the trainers keep track of their clients’ activities, weight loss and muscle growth in order to gauge progress. “We check your measurements every month - your neck, waist, hips, arms, calves, legs and stomach,” Walton says. “We compare that to the last month’s results, and see if you’ve gotten any better.” While keeping track of this progress is important, Walton’s true hope is that clients move forward in life feeling empowered. “After you train with me or my trainers here, you can train with anybody,” he says. “You should feel accomplished. You should feel like you can do and conquer anything.” Strength Factory Personal Training is located at 2420 East 55th Place in Indianapolis. he Broad Ripple community has great offerings when it comes to exercise, but Couture Pilates stands out as a pillar of the fitness community. Owner Joanna Couture is proud to offer members a studio that keeps things interesting and fresh, while respecting and understanding the basics and foundation of Pilates. Couture expanded to a new location at 54th Street and the Monon Trail in January of 2020, and since then she has been able to expand the programming. Members can enjoy group reformer classes, bodhi classes that involve rope suspension systems, motor-balance training and resistance classes, along with classes that are varied in levels of skill and equipment used. This contemporary take on Pilates allows teachers and members to keep the exercises exciting, and trick the mind to not rely fully on muscle memory. While Couture loves offering a variety of classes using new techniques, she still has tried-and-true duet reformer classes and private sessions as well. Couture started her studio out of a need for more exhilarating classes. She had been in the industry for 22 years and wanted a change of pace, but could not find anywhere in Indianapolis that offered new equipment or taught cutting-edge techniques. She joined the Pilates movement when it was gaining popularity, and now finds that

members are always curious about what exactly Pilates is and how to incorporate the movements into their lives. She says she has found that there are more men practicing now, “saying they were surprised at how great of a workout it was.” She sees the practice as a great way to improve the physique, focus the mind and establish relationships with others. The studio is truly a community, and members can come in expecting classes taught by teachers who are knowledgeable and experienced. They can also meet Couture and take her classes, since she loves being involved in the studio’s activities. Members have the opportunity to try out many classes before committing to teachers they resonate with, and will find their experience is customized to their needs. The wide range of class types helps customers tailor their time at the studio and walk away feeling good. The location is perfectly situated within the Broad Ripple community, near boutique shops and eateries, including many women-owned businesses. Couture sees herself as lucky to know people in her community and proud to call them members who practice alongside her. Couture Pilates is located at 1057 East 54th Street, Suite B in Indianapolis.
