larissa Morley says her new Broad Ripple-based bakery, Pots & Pans Pie Co. on North College Avenue, is the result of a longtime passion for baking and a few key lessons learned from her family while growing up on the southside of Indy. “Baking was something my family always did together, and my grandma and my mom taught me a lot,” she says. “They were always very gifted with baking and cooking and being creative. That kind of thing came pretty naturally to me. And then my dad owns a business, so he taught me a lot about that entrepreneurial side. So I would say it was a marriage of my family heritage.” In the spring of 2016, Morley began taking out vendor space at various Indy farmers markets and offering her pies to crowds that she says were receptive right off the bat. While she initially had no expectation of eventually opening up her own storefront,
Owner Clarissa Morley
word began to spread and, by the following year, she could barely keep up with demand - prompting Morley to start pondering the possibility of a brick-and-mortar facility. “In the summer of 2017 I did five farmers markets, and it was kind of a way to do market research for my business,” Morley says. “I wanted to find out where my customer base would be. I was open to landing anywhere, but we really took off 6 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atBRip.com
in Broad Ripple. It wasn’t just the most successful farmers market for us, but it was the one where I felt like I could gain longterm customers and have a strong presence.” By Thanksgiving of 2017, Morley had outgrown the space she’d been using to bake and prep her products. It was time to start the search for a location where she could have the kitchen space to keep up with demand and also offer a dine-in café area. “It became obvious that it made financial sense to move into our own space — the timing was just right,” she says, adding that Pots & Pans officially opened on December 1, 2018, just in time for the holidays. “We started looking around and pretty soon we found the spot that we’re in now. It’s the only spot I looked at and I knew I couldn’t pass it up.” The Pots & Pans interior seats 15, and a large chalkboard above the front desk displays the pies, galettes and extras available at any given time. Customers can view the goings-on in the kitchen through a large window, and coffee and sparkling water is available to complement the food menu, which can include sweet
pie selections like honey caramel pear, lemon or sugar creme brûlée and savory pot pies like chicken or meatball marinara — all depending on the season and what Morley and her staff feel like churning out for the week. “Our take-and-bake chicken pot pie is really popular, and we were doing the Thai chicken curry occasionally, and now we’re doing that one every week because it’s really popular,” Morley adds. “Our galettes, like our apple cream cheese galette, are popular now too.” Pots & Pans also sells a variety of succulent arrangements, which, like her pies, are inspired by her family and upbringing. “My dad owns wholesale greenhouses, so it goes along with the whole idea of the business being a marriage of my family heritage,” she says. “It’s something people can take home and enjoy with their family.” Online ordering is available through the Pots and Pans official website, and Morley 7 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atBRip.com
also plans to continue offering her products through the farmers market scene while establishing her store presence in Broad Ripple. “We’ve been at the winter Carmel and Broad Ripple markets, and we plan to be at the Broad Ripple market throughout the summer. We’ll always do that one,” she says. Over time, Morley plans to try out various non-pie menu items. Over the winter, she and her team introduced a locally-sourced winter radish salad with winter greens, roasted sweet potatoes and a house-made dijon dressing, but she says her focus will always be on pie. “There’s a lot you can do with pie, and I like that it’s versatile while kind of being in its own category,” she says. “It’s a fun business to be in.” Pots & Pans Pie Co. is located at 4915 North College Avenue. Last Call Connor’s Pub Remains a Village Fixture 40 Years Later Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
It’s the type of place where you can mow the lawn and then come in for a beer, or you can come in in your tux after a wedding. -Maria, bartender 14 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atBRip.com
t’s not flashy. It’s somewhat hidden, off the beaten Broad Ripple path. And yet, Connor’s Pub has managed to flourish as a Village fixture for four decades. So how do they pull it off? The staff feels much of the success of Connor’s Pub lies in its versatile and unpretentious atmosphere and the close connections that exist between customers and employees. “It’s the type of place where you can mow the lawn and then come in for a beer, or you can come in in your tux after a wedding,” says Connor’s daytime bartender Maria. “I think one of the things about it being tucked away is that people will walk in here and say, ‘I didn't know you were even here, and this place is so cool.’ With the canal, Connor’s 15 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atBRip.com
kind of sits in its own little peninsula and has its own kind of charm that way.” It’s an establishment that packs a substantial punch considering the modest size of its interior. You’ll often find full bands rocking out on Sunday nights and bursting-at-theseams crowds cheering on football, baseball or rugby games on weekends. Owner John Yaggi (affectionately known as J.Y. by friends, staffers and regulars) purchased Connor’s in 2002 from Mike and Denny Connor, who officially launched Connor’s back in 1979 after the previous occupant, J-Boys bar, shut its doors. For the last 17 years, Yaggi has striven to maintain a welcoming vibe that offers a wide beer and liquor selection and a quality food menu. With a patio and interior walls adorned
puts into St. Patrick’s Day in order to put the tent party on here year after year,” Maria adds. “It’s big every year and he’s behind the scenes working and puts up and takes down the tent on the same day.”
with street signs, framed sports jerseys, beer signage and postcards from folks all over the world who have visited the pub, Connor’s is open until 3:00 a.m. every night of the week. The relaxed daytime atmosphere provides a distinct contrast to the lively vibe at night.
Connor’s staple.
“It’s always nice to see multiple generations here,” Maria says. “We get a lot of the Butler crowd, which is one of the reasons Connor’s has that continuum. You have people who went to Butler and whose kids are at Butler now.”
Drink specials abound throughout the week including pint nights and craft beer nights, featuring local brews and Irish beer staples. Each year for St. Patrick’s Day, Connor’s takes the party out of the confines of the bar and into a huge tent for morning-tonight revelry that locals have come to highly anticipate, including multiple music acts, food and Irish-themed beverages.

Maria says some of the current Connor’s regulars have frequented the establishment for decades, and she attributes such a high level of dedication to Yaggi and his staff’s friendly approach toward all who walk in the door for a pint or a plate of food. “Some people have been coming in here for 35 years, and I don’t expect you would see that in a lot of the big-chain bars,” she says. “It’s a sole proprietor business, and more and more we're losing that sole proprietorship type of place in Broad Ripple. I think that has something to do with why Connor’s continues to have a good presence.” Connor’s Pub is located at 6331 Ferguson Street in Indianapolis. Local Concert Violinist Is Inspiring Next Generation of Musicians Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photography Provided
English speakers borrowed the Italian noun virtuoso in the 1600s. It comes in turn from the Italian adjective virtuoso, which means both "virtuous" and "skilled." Steve Goodman is all that and more. The classically trained violinist has spent the better part of four decades honing his art, performing and touring extensively throughout Europe. Goodman’s resume is quite long and impressive. An adopted Hoosier for the past 20 years, Goodman moved here for work and whether he intended to stay or not, it was an unexpected career opportunity that will inspire the next generation of young Hoosier musicians. Born in south central Los Angeles, Goodman began taking his first violin lessons at the age of six along with his two brothers. His talent was undeniable and he eventually earned an invitation that would make him the youngest member of the Los Angeles Junior Philharmonic Orchestra and allow him to further his training at the Interlochen International Arts Academy at the University of Michigan. And yet for all that formal training with orchestral and jazz music, the naturally quiet unassuming violinist was inspired by a wide range of musical genres that would open many doors throughout his career. After completing his studies at Interlochen, Goodman returned to Los Angeles and toured with a couple of bands, one was a punk rock band, called Fingers and Breath.

“I had a purple Mohawk and zebra pants,” he says with a chuckle. He also started an Avant-garde jazz band called Van Gogh’s Ear and was actively working in the L.A. music scene for years. Goodman’s training did not define him, his love for all types of music did and it lead to an incredible career that this virtuoso violinist will tell you he is still learning, growing and excited about the future. At some point, Goodman crossed paths 21 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atBRip.com
with Dale Hoskins, a famous guitarist in L.A. that he hired to perform in one of his bands. Hoskins toured with another band called Flame Dream, which was the opening band for Genesis, the popular 1970’s band that started out as a folk band with famous vocalists, Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel before turning to pop music by the end of the decade. Hoskins was friends with members of the Italian-French folk group called, Al Pesto, the most famous band in Europe, and introduced Goodman. The chance meeting led to an invitation to join the
group in Switzerland. With four hundred dollars in his pocket, he booked a one-way flight to Switzerland and just two days after arriving, he went on tour. Al Pesto played for the President of the country, opened the Lucerne Train Station and was the premiere band in Europe. They even played at the Rose Bowl. The group was on television, radio and the news at least once a week. “The most surreal moment for me was when I returned from a trip to L.A., I was riding in a taxi, our new album was out, the taxi passed an apartment with the window open and our music was playing,” Goodman says. Shortly after that, Goodman recorded his first jazz CD. He performed in Santa Barbara and Long Beach, California, Los Angeles, New York, Berlin and Italy at jazz festivals and concerts. He later founded an Avant-garde group called PaGO LiBre. With members from both sides of the Atlantic, the group did not perform together very often but recorded an album with an Italian Jazz label Splasc(h). Goodman left shortly thereafter to return to L.A. where he was contracted by Warner Brothers to do a Frank Sinatra two-part miniseries. Goodman experienced it all, press conferences, tours, television appearances, his music playing on the radio, news stories about his performances, music awards and more.

His international travels opened the world of folk music, he wrote musical, theatrical, electric violin to play music from Led Zeppelin, classic orchestral music or the music you will hear with the Dukes of Django, gypsy jazz. Goodman’s vast taste in music was influenced by more than just the Bach and Mozart, claiming Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath as important influences. Eventually, his work led him to Indianapolis two decades ago. He’s since played shows around Indy and Broad Ripple, including at the Petite Chou Bistro & Champagne Bar. Ten years into living and working in Indianapolis, he received two seemingly random phone calls in one day from Perry Meridian and Cathedral High School both 22 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atBRip.com
wanting him to apply for the job openings running their school orchestras. Without hesitating, he vividly remembers saying to both, “Thanks but I don’t really want the job.” He said, he thought to himself, “I have been a freelance concert violinist my whole life, I don’t want to teach.” But then Goodman recalled a conversation decades earlier with one of his former teacher’s recommendations that at some point he needed to teach. Goodman remembered telling her, “I don’t want to teach,” and her comment back to him was simply, “You need to teach. One day you will teach and you will understand.” So, he applied for the jobs and became the Director of the Orchestra and Jazz Ensembles at Cathedral High School. Three weeks after starting in the position, he recalled leaving the school after a particularly positive rehearsal with both the orchestra and the jazz group.

“I had a moment of divine providence when I realized my teacher was right the whole time, and I realized I am home,” Goodman says. Goodman’s passion for teaching expanded to more work with youth as the Vice President and Artistic Director of the Symphonic Youth Orchestra. And that is the way his career has gone, doors opening at just the right time. Goodman also works at three other area junior highs and high schools in addition to Cathedral. He most recently became the newest staff member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra (MCO) as a private instructor. The at-risk youth music program is offered through the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Goodman’s passion for working with young people is evident. “If anyone would like to donate instruments or financially support this music program for at-risk youth, please visit the website it is a great and worthwhile program,” he says.
