Sick is an investigative podcast about what goes wrong in the places meant to keep us healthy. The first season explored the complications of fertility medicine, one Indiana doctor’s abuse of power, and the generations of lives he affected. hen Tim Walker moved to Indiana from Michigan in June of 2014, he never expected to co-found his own business. He accepted a position with an Indiana-based financial firm, but wanted to return to his passion for music and recording. People walk in and are just amazed. It’s been very wellreceived.” RTRC can accommodate local musicians as well as nationally recognized recording

artists. The team chose to open their studio in Indiana because of the deep well of talent in the area. “We don’t want this to be a transactional experience,” Walker says. “It’s more than that. We have a deep passion for what we do and our staff is extremely talented. We also wanted people to know you don’t have to go to a larger city like Los Angeles or Nashville to do a record.”
"WE HAVE A DEEP PASSION FOR WHAT WE DO AND OUR STAFF IS EXTREMELY TALENTED. WE ALSO WANTED PEOPLE TO KNOW YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO TO A LARGER CITY LIKE LOS ANGELES OR NASHVILLE TO DO A RECORD.” -TIM WALKER-
The idea of sharing their knowledge and teaching others is paramount to the group of friends. RTRC offers a recording arts program, offering one-on-one instruction, group labs and group workshops. Students receive real-work experience and mentoring from active professionals. “The education program is our opportunity to share our passion and knowledge for the recording arts with students who would like to make a career in the music business,” Walker says. “It allows us to attract and develop young talent. It’s the best way to find new members of the Round Table team and give them opportunities to begin their careers. The students always bring a fresh perspective and lots of creative energy. They help to keep a pulse on what is new and current.” The staff of 13 is lovingly referred to as the Round Table. The various engineers and producers are each skilled in different music genres. Most have previously worked as freelancers but now have a place to call home at RTRC.

to hire extremely talented engineers and producers, and provide a home to explore their passion for their client’s music and their personal aspirations.”

CHATTING IT UP CIRCLE CITY CHATTER PODCAST SPOTLIGHTS INDY BUSINESSES Writer / Shay McCoy Photographer / Michael Durr
One of the best aspects of the City of Indianapolis is the tangible support that the community has for local, small businesses. The local love is strong and this is evident through the annual Small Business Saturday events, and the partnerships that these businesses create together. Avenues for local business owners to share their stories can be difficult to come by, but podcasts
provide a means to empower potential entrepreneurs, and inspire others in the community. There have been various podcasts that have focused on interviewing business owners in Indianapolis, but Circle City Chatter hosts Andrea Jones and Shay McCoy are excited to cover businesses that are just starting out, long-standing pillars in the Indianapolis community, and those without a brick-and-mortar storefront. By highlighting these businesses, the hosts hope to increase awareness of the community of small businesses in Indianapolis. While the hosts of Circle City Chatter are not Indy natives, their love for the city is evident in their vision for the podcast. Jones moved from Illinois to Indiana in October of 2021 and found that the best way to get to know her new city is to explore all the local businesses it has around her. She settled in the Bates-Hendricks area with her husband and began her wedding planning service, J2 Wedding Co. She has a background in organizational leadership

and management, and exercises this in her many roles like lending a hand with the back-end work of her mother’s women’s store, 46:10 Boutique. Jones appreciates how close-knit the Indy community is to not only the local business owners, but also the residents of the city. She appreciates the impact that local support has on her neighbors, community members and the local economy overall. Her passion for local businesses will be evident in the thoughtprovoking and clear questions she plans to ask interviewees, and she says she is “so excited to be able to shed a light on several of Indy’s small businesses - the popular ones and the hidden gems.” McCoy is a local content creator who strives to help young adults live a full life in the city through her blog and Instagram page, City of Shay.

“I kept looking for creators who were talking about cool things to do, and when I couldn’t find them I decided I needed to become that for myself,” she says. Many locals are always craving the next new thing, and they come to McCoy’s page to learn about fresh and new events, restaurant openings and more. McCoy also works in social media at her full-time position at Hotel Indy as an experience curator. Originally from Iowa, she has found that there is always something to do in Indy, but it is never too overwhelming. She has a sense that the local businesses in Indianapolis are all about

community over competition, and can remember numerous times when a business came to another’s aid to offer help and assistance, especially with the difficulties of the last couple of years. She loves living in the downtown community and appreciates that people are still excited to come back downtown and enjoy all it has to offer. Jones and McCoy are both big fans of the podcasting format and listen to other Indianapolis-based podcasts regularly. The Drink Culture podcast was a major source of inspiration for them, and they felt there was a gap in the Indy community for highlighting small businesses and providing a platform for owners to tell their story. Jones reached out to McCoy to ask if she would be interested in starting a podcast. By using the podcast platform to give small businesses a bigger voice, the hosts hope to build awareness of all the good that these businesses do for the community and for Indianapolis. Their goals are to introduce the community to businesses they may have never heard of, as well as learn from long-standing businesses that have built their home in Indianapolis and have found success. They also look forward to learning how these owners built their businesses and what keeps them going, and telling the story of Indianapolis through their passions and the lessons they’ve learned. You can keep up with the Circle City Chatter podcast anywhere you listen to podcasts, and on Instagram @circlecitychatter.

ABSTRACT THOUGHT DELVES INTO ALL THINGS ARTISTIC
Artist and Host Nick Smith Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Michael Durr
to an idea sometimes is getting it out of that mental cluster.”
As a contemporary artist, Nick Smith likes to use his podcast, Abstract Thought, as a way to sort through his own creative journey.
Started in November of 2020, Abstract Thought discusses how to stay inspired as a creative, ways to navigate the business of art, and what to think of the art world in the modern era. With 13 episodes and counting, the podcast features conversations between Smith and fellow artists, usually at just over an hour in length.
“It’s allowed me to talk through a lot,” Smith says of the podcast. “You keep stuff in your head, but in your head it’s kind of jumbled. The way that you can best come
A Hoosier native, Smith grew up in a farm town east of Indianapolis. Outside of art class in school, he says seeing graffiti on trains piqued his interest in the arts. “I was introduced to other forms of art through seeing freight trains roll by with graffiti on them, and that sparked some of my street-art passion,” Smith says.
Smith would eventually move to downtown Indianapolis to study graphic design at Herron School of Art and Design. From there he found himself working in the world of advertising, which didn’t quite scratch his creative itch.
“It was cool and everything, but it just didn’t get my creative juices flowing like I had hoped,” he says. “I started doing murals on the side, on weekends or afterhours. I was basically doing two jobs at once.” As the mural gigs became more plentiful, he was able to make the transition into being a full-time artist. “I just realized, ‘I like doing this mural stuff a lot more. It’s more me, and I feel like I have more to say and can say more with it,’” Smith says. “I took that and ran with it. A couple years have gone by and I still don’t necessarily have
a day job, which is awesome.” Smith now has murals featured all over the city, including one at The Coil apartment complex in Broad Ripple and a few on the campus of locally based staffing company NCW. His murals often feature abstract, geometric designs, which he says are inspired by a fascination with architecture. “I grew up in a flat farm area, so once I went downtown to go to school, I was now in this very angular, densely populated architectural space,” Smith says. “All of a sudden architecture was coming through in some of my line work.” On Abstract Thought, Smith often talks about such influences with fellow creatives, working through an artist’s inner thoughts, feelings and struggles. “I like to keep it very open-ended and almost talk about the philosophy of art, and the backstory and the trauma related with

LISTEN NOW why anybody in the 21st century wants to be an artist,” he says. “I feel like I’ve had a somewhat unique path with that, so it’s cool to hear other people’s paths and how they got there.” Initially, Smith’s plan with Abstract Thought was to predominantly highlight local and Midwest-based artists. As the podcast has progressed, however, his reach has shifted to even include conversations with artists from other countries. “Due to the internet, I do have some wide connections,” Smith says. “There are people all around the world who are creatives that also have stories to tell, so I didn’t really want to pigeonhole myself to just Indy.” Through talking with other artists on Abstract Thought, Smith has often felt therapeutic benefits when it comes to working through past obstacles. “I’ve made a lot of mistakes and have had
to paint stuff I didn’t really like,” Smith says. “Some of the podcast touches on some of the mental struggle behind having to push through some of that. It’s just good to externalize some of it.” He ultimately hopes that Abstract Thought simply provides listeners with new perspectives.
“That’s really what a podcast is about,” he says. “It’s sharing different perspectives and helping people along, because as an artist it can really be a lonely time. You’re by yourself with a canvas, and you’ve got to think a lot. Sometimes it’s good to let those things out and chew through them.”
With thousands of plans from nationally recognized companies and personal service, finding the right coverage has never been easier.

anorria Askew and Candace Boyd may be familiar names because they are both food creatives and food bloggers within Indianapolis. Boyd has her own spice line, FoodLoveTog, and is all about getting people comfortable in the kitchen. Askew is a personal chef and author of “Staples + 5: Simple Recipes to Make the Most of Your Pantry.” They have a deep-rooted personal friendship with each other that was built on their love of well-seasoned food, fun, and challenging conversations. They noticed within those challenging conversations that there needed to be a bigger space for their voices. Thus the idea of Black Girls Eating, the podcast, was born in 2018, but it wasn’t released until early March of 2021. They knew that if they were going to start a podcast, they needed to do it right. “There’s a lot of work and energy put into this podcast, and if we were going to celebrate and amplify black voices, we were going to do it well,” Askew says. That’s exactly what Black Girls Eating is - conversations on justice, black-girl magic, and well-seasoned food. They are currently two seasons into the podcast with 19 episodes. In their podcast you can find conversations recorded for the rest of us to hear. They often discuss why food is important, especially in black culture. When it isn’t just them, they’re hosting guests. “We spend our time shining light on black creatives and black businesses,” Askew says. Their main focus is black women, and some available episodes feature Oya Woodruff, owner of Chef Oya’s The TRAP, Asia Coffee, owner of Cakes by Coffee, Tanisha Stewart, community advocate, and Nicole Kearney, owner of Sip & Share Wines, to mention just a few. They record all of their podcasts in the Nexus Impact Center, just northwest of Broad Ripple. All episodes are sound

was looking for a way to reconnect with his hometown, which led to the start of Made In Indy. “I had been away from Indy for probably nine years and I wanted to create a way to get back in touch with my city,” Antron says. “This bright idea came along for me to create a podcast.” When it comes to selecting his guests, Antron says he simply seeks out people who seem to have intriguing stories. “Honestly, it’s about who I find to be interesting and who I think other people will find to be interesting,” Antron says. “I’ve spent a lot of my life as a bit of a curator in my community so I tend to find, if I think something’s interesting, that other people may find it to be interesting too.” In reflecting on what he enjoys most about hosting Made In Indy, Antron cites the moment he realized he was meant to engage with other people. “My senior year of college, there was a group of 20 kids who all majored in acting, theater and musical theater, and had dreams of success,” Antron says. “My professor said, ‘I want you to sit around this table, talk to everyone and guide this conversation.’ Maybe she figured out that I was good at talking to people, but that was such a riveting conversation, where we were all being transparent and being vulnerable in this public space. That’s a moment that stands out in my life of what it is I’m supposed to be doing. I’m supposed to be talking to people, and that’s what led me to Made In Indy.” While Made In Indy is a great way to educate Indianapolis residents on what’s going on in their own backyard, Antron also hopes his podcast can inspire people to live their best lives.
