WINGIN' IT: KEYSTONE SPORTS REVIEW STILL A LOCAL FAVORITE NEARLY 30 YEARS LATER

In the mid-1990s Larry Kramer happened to live around the corner from Keystone Sports Review, an unassuming neighborhood bar and grill at Keystone Avenue and 56th Street, and would often stop by on the way home from his sales job for a bite to eat. Over time Kramer grew fond of the establishment and soon developed a friendship with the head bartender, who eventually hired him to take over management and bartending duties on Sunday nights.

Brandon Coryell, co-owner and managing partner.

Vitality IV Bar Brings Vitamin Infusion Therapy to Broad Ripple Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Ellie Sophia Photography

Brandon Coryell has always been into health and wellness so when a friend of his taught him about IV vitamin infusion therapy his interest piqued. Though people on the east and west coasts were quicker to jump on the holistic health bandwagon, Coryell saw that the Midwest was starting to embrace it, too, and he thought Indianapolis could greatly benefit from such a service. In June 2018, Coryell, co-owner and managing partner, opened the Vitality IV Bar on Mass Avenue, and in June 2018 he opened a second location in Broad Ripple. “Intravenous Vitamin Administration allows us to create an environment for individuals who are seeking to support their overall health and well-being, whether you’re a CEO, an athlete or a worn-out mom,” Coryell says. He preaches the importance of living one’s best life since, after all, we only get one. That starts from within. “If you’re constantly tired or bloated, that affects your day,” Coryell says. Intravenous Vitamin Therapy works by administering vitamins and nutrients directly into the bloodstream thereby bypassing the digestive system for instant benefits. This provides increased cell absorption and 100 percent bioavailability of vitamins. Oral supplements, on the other hand, can only be absorbed 20 percent by the body because they’re being filtered through the GI tract. Though the Vitality IV Bar employs nurses and paramedics to administer the IVs, Coryell stresses that they do not treat, cure or diagnose any diseases. Still, it’s not unusual for physicians to refer patients to them simply because it speeds recovery. Some people come in to rid their bodies of toxins while others seek an immune booster during cold and flu season. Still, others simply want increased energy. Clients initially fill out a health assessment that’s reviewed by physicians to determine if it’s safe to proceed. Should someone have pulmonary edema, high blood pressure or Type 2 diabetes, for instance, they would not be able to participate. Based on responses from the health assessment, physicians recommend an IV vitamin prescription for the client.

Every individual is unique. Where one person might require more magnesium, another may need a boost of Vitamin C, D or B12. Since we all have different needs, IV vitamin cocktails vary. At the Vitality IV Bar, they have 15 different IV infusion cocktails, some of which focus on performance, others on muscle building and energy. “If someone comes in fully depleted — perhaps they just ran a marathon or their protein levels are high or they’re not taking vitamins so they’re starting with a baseline of zero — they’ll feel the effects very quickly,” says Coryell, who attributes his regular IV vitamin infusions to giving him the energy to work seven days a week at two locations, plus keep up with his three daughters and coach basketball without hitting that proverbial wall of lost energy. Clients feel the same. For instance, Donna Lennox maintains that the results from the infusions were incredible. “[My husband and I] felt revitalized and renewed with energy,” Lennox says. “My husband, who had been under the weather with cold and flu symptoms, felt remarkably better.” Since the establishment has opened Coryell estimates that they have done thousands of IV vitamin infusions. “Most of our clients are professional adults who run, run, run and are tired all the time,” Coryell says. “We also cater to the sports side — lots of bodybuilders and high-end athletes who know that this is the fastest way to get the nutrients and hydration they need.” Though they don’t accept insurance, clients may use their health savings or flex spending accounts. The cost of an IV session (which typically lasts about 45 minutes) ranges from $60 to $260. “Pain blasters are the most expensive because it includes 28 different vitamins,” Coryell says. They also offer concierge services enabling them to go directly to the client. People sometimes ask Coryell, “Why not just drink water and eat healthy?” The answer is yes, those things are important, too. “The IV vitamins are supplemental because a lot of us aren’t getting the hydration we need,” Coryell adds. “The problem is that often people run so low for so long that they don’t know any different.” Coryell recommends coming in to replenish, recover and restore. “Once you get one, you always come back,” he says. “It’s an amazing feeling.” The Vitality IV Bar in Broad Ripple is located at 6302 Guilford Avenue. We have been in the lead of using more biology and less chemistry. One of our founders is an Agronomist from Purdue, a soil scientist. He works with the team at TLC and with various manufacturers, distributors and developers of lawn products to find the right products and combinations to build the soil. We are utilizing biology to replace some of the chemistry as we build the soil. Many of the newer lawns have poor soil, a clay-pea gravel mix that leaves a lot to be desired. These soils have low nutrient value as well as they bind up the nutrients that tend to be there. Just using organic fertilizers doesn’t help reduce the amount of nitrogen being put on the lawns, it’s just another form of it. With the use of only organic fertilizers, we still have that whole nitrogen cycle which ends up with ammonification and nitrates into the water system. By using biosolids and a variety of things like kelp, humic and fulvic acids, amino acids, mychorrhizea, micro nutrients and other ingredients we are increasing the microbial activity in the rhizosphere. When we increase the microbial activity we are getting nutrients released from the soil which are then more readily available to the turf plant through its root system. The soil and the root system both have a negative charge, and when we can break off these nutrients with a positive charge from the soil they can then be taken up by the root system. By adding carbon into the soil we increase the surface area where these nutrients can also be stored and not just passed through the soil. Some of these products also cause small microfractures of the soil particles leading to more surface area to hold onto these nutrients as well. We practice IPM, Integrated Pest Management, and with our low pressure, low volume applications we can reduce our pesticides as well. We have a great team. Many of our team members have been with us for more than five years, up to 25. We have seven guys with more than 25 years of experience in the field.

The Urban Hippie New Urban-Style Boutique Opens In SoBro Writer & Photographer / Stephanie Duncan

Another shop has opened up in the old Big Al’s Superstore building, located at the 46th Street and College intersection, bringing more business to the area. The Urban Hippie is an Indiana-owned boutique that is hoping to serve some trendy boho and urban style to South Broad Ripple. The Urban Hippie is a small boutique run by Daisha Virgin and is stocked with a wide variety of fun, trendy pieces that embody a relaxed boho chic and urban style with an emphasis on texture and comfort. Virgin was inspired to open up the second location after watching her aunt open up the first store in Ft. Wayne seven years ago. “She was tired of the corporate life and wanted to try out e-commerce and started selling things on eBay,” Virgin says. ““The clothing she was bringing in were super cute with a cool hippy style that embodied her vibe. So we convinced her to open up a brick and mortar shop.” At first, friends and family were hanging out at the small studio but business quickly exploded to where The Urban Hippie expanded into a larger space. Virgin has always been super excited for the potential of this shop.

Owner Daisha Virgin

Both locations have a variety of brands and collections handpicked by both owners with a focus on texture and the boho style, but each shop reflects their own personal style. “I’m a little more rock ‘n roll, and I love going to concerts,” Virgin says. "So I’ll bring in items reflect that." After living in the Broad Ripple area for several years, Virgin wanted her shop to be here. “The style of the building and surrounding area was very important to us,” she says. Virgin loves the Broad Ripple and Meridian Kessler community and is very excited to be able to open a business here. With the vacant Big Al’s building being renovated, the timing was perfect. The shop has an open-loft feel, styled with inspiration from the 70s — showing off exposed brick, high ceilings with a lot of natural light and complete with VW bug in the bathroom and a vintage fridge. “We want people to hang out and enjoy the space and the clothing,” Virgin adds.

“At first she just wanted a cool place to hang out by herself, and it just got bigger and it became its own brand”, she says. When returning to Ft. Wayne to visit friends and family, Virgin found herself at the shop often, she realized she wanted to open one of her own. “Whenever I’d go home, I’d be there hanging out and we'd always say we needed to open up another location in Indy," she says.

Animal rights is also an important mission for The Urban Hippie as well. If you see an item in the shop that looks like leather, it's vegan. Monthly donations are made to the local and international animal groups like Hope for Animals in Fort Wayne, Lennox Legacy Rescue, Soi Dog Foundation, and Frosted Face. They hope to find more Indy organizations for a bike pub crawl event, Pedal for Paws, that will take place this summer. The Urban Hippie is located at 4601 N College Ave, next to the newly opened Scarlet Lane Taproom. You can visit them online at theurbanhippie.biz or give them a call at 260-420-4479.

Scarlet Lane Brewing Opens New SoBro Tap House Writer / Stephanie Duncan Photographer / Michael Durr

The well-known but recently vacant Big Al’s Superstore building has some new tenants giving new life to the 46th and College intersection. The McCordsville-based brewery Scarlet Lane Brewing recently opened its doors to their SoBro Tap House and hope to serve the area as a neighborhood retreat. With all three owners living close to the area, opening a taproom in South Broad Ripple made sense according to one of the owners Nick Servies. “My wife and I spent our adult lives in the Butler area, and I think everyone that lives in that part of town knows the Big Al's building,” he says.”I think everyone was just begging for something good to go in there. We wanted to get back into that neighborhood to revitalize that area.” The intimate taproom still displays the signature Scarlet Lane feel, with darker macabre artwork and notably no TVs. “We want a place where people can hang out and talk to their bartender or their neighbors free from distractions,” Servies says about the choice to not have TVs like most other establishments. “We don’t want to fight the market that is already there, we’d rather be more of a place where people can hang out without obligation.”

CEO & Head Brewer Eilise Lane

To stay true to the neighborhood retreat theme, the taproom won’t be event heavy but will have special announcements for every beer launch throughout the year. Along with the taproom, the building will also house a new restaurant, Stiltsville out of Miami. The neighboring businesses plan to collaborate to provide a small appetizer menu for the taproom. The SoBro taproom is one of two new taprooms that opened this year, the other being the Old Southside earlier this year. Both taprooms will have the Scarlet Lane standbys, including their signature Dorian Coconut Stout, but hope to use these new taprooms as a place to try out more experimental beers. “We wanted to see the brand grow, and by opening a couple of neighborhood taprooms it allows us to get more beer to the consumer and the availability to do more experimental brews,” Servies says. “We can try the different brews out at our taprooms and send them off to distro if they’re successful.” Revitalizing local neighborhoods has always been a goal for Nick Servies and his wife and Head Brewer, Eilise Lane. After living in Oregon for many years, traveling and hanging out in local breweries just intensified their interest for unique beers. After falling in love with a stout brewed by her mentor, Tonya Cornett at Bend Brewing Company, Lane started dabbling in homebrewing. Not surprisingly, their first and most popular brew is the Dorian Coconut Stout. “We were always beer people and we watched all these small beer companies pick up in small towns,” Servies says. “Especially in the West where we saw major fishing or logging companies go down, small breweries were popping up on their place. We were really interested in being a part of the new economy.” Soon after, Lane attended the American Brewers Guild to learn the basics and science of brewing, and the Scarlet Lane team set up shop in McCordsville in 2014. When asked why they chose McCordsville, Servies says the building and timing had a lot to do with it. “We found a building that was the right set up for what we needed,” he says. “It was a space that needed something, and we wanted to make it a focal point for this Indiana town.” The SoBro taproom is located at 4601 N. College Ave, across the street from Next Door Eatery. They have 22 rotating taps dedicated to their most popular beers, with a couple of taps dedicated to guest brews which will include wine, cider and beers. A carryout cooler will also be available for to-go beer. You can celebrate Scarlet Lane’s 5th anniversary May 4, where they are relaunching their Dorian Coconut Stout as their summer release. For more information, visit them online at scarletlanebrew.com.

WINGIN’ IT Keystone Sports Review Still a Local Favorite Nearly 30 Years Later Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr

Sometimes happenstance can have interesting effects. “It was a nice place to eat at, and I liked working those Sundays for some extra pocket money,” recalls Kramer, an Indy native and Bishop Chatard High School grad who had acquired some bartending experience with a catering company during his college years at IUPUI. “The

bartender had bought the business in 1997, and by May of 1999 I had become her partner there. I had gotten tired of driving everywhere for my sales job, plus I was engaged, and she was getting burned out having worked there for nine or 10 years.” Kramer and his brother Joshua officially took over as owners in June of 2000, and since then they’ve worked to maintain Keystone Sports Review — often referred to by staffers and regulars as KSR — as a fixture of Indy’s neighborhood pub scene. Upon assuming ownership, Kramer approached the job by catering to a very specific niche, and he says the approach has served him well for nearly 20 years now. "The houses in the Broad Ripple area are overpriced compared to other parts of 18 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / APRIL 2019 / atBRip.com

Indianapolis, and they cater a lot to dualincome couples with no kids,” Kramer says. “I went with this theory that a lot of those couples want to go out instead of cooking, so why not go out somewhere with fairpriced drinks and good food? I knew we could provide that. I also wanted to be a place where people could meet for a bite to eat and a drink or two before they go out to the clubs in Broad Ripple.” And there's plenty on the menu to choose from. KSR boasts starters like nachos, breadsticks and fried pickles, and main course dishes include burgers, sandwiches, steaks, thin-crust pizza and tenderloins that are hand-pounded and grilled or breaded to order. Kramer is quick to point out that his standout menu item through the years has been his chicken wings, for which his kitchen staff makes in-house rubs and sauces like Caribbean jerk, teriyaki, hot garlic and honey barbecue. During Super Bowl week KSR typically uses up about 58 cases of wings, which equates to 2,360 pounds. That’s well over a ton of chicken wings. “All you have to do is see what it’s like here during Super Bowl week to see how popular the wings are here — people start calling us the Monday before to arrange pickup times,” Kramer says. “We have to bring in extra fryers. For a normal week, we go through about 35 cases.” KSR has also managed to become a niche within a niche, at least during the college football season. Nearly 15 years ago a close friend of Joshua’s father in law and a group of his fellow University of Wisconsin alums asked if they could watch their alma mater play a home game on the KSR big screen television. The viewing became a regular occurrence, and Kramer says he has remained committed to providing a welcoming setting for each and every Wisconsin home game. “The fans have stayed true and loyal to us, and I have Wisconsin fans from Madison come in all the time,” Kramer says. “A couple

20 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / APRIL 2019 / atBRip.com

of years ago when Wisconsin was playing for the Big Ten championship game, Channel 4 in Madison, Wisconsin, broadcasted their Saturday morning news from KSR starting at five in the morning. They had a two-hour simulcast broadcast back to Madison from right here in the bar.” After almost two decades, Kramer feels the formula that has led to KSR’s long-term success is relatively simple. “It’s good food, good atmosphere and fair prices,” he says. “We’ve got a good reputation established. We offer the neighborhood bar atmosphere and we’ve become a destination for people who come from places like Westfield, Cicero and Fishers, too.” Keystone Sports Review is located at 5602 North Keystone Avenue.
