BIGGER & BETTER: TASTE OF BROAD RIPPLE RETURNS JUNE 16 WITH EXPANDED STREET ACCESS, MORE ENTERTAINMENT AND FOOD VENDORS Last year Indy residents were treated to a reboot of the Taste of Broad Ripple, a one-dayonly culinary event conceived 15 years ago that had been put on hiatus for more than a decade. ast year Indy residents were treated to a reboot of the Taste of Broad Ripple, a one-day-only culinary event conceived 15 years ago that had been put on hiatus for more than a decade. The city welcomed its return with open arms, and Steve Ross, owner of The Vogue Nightclub and event co-organizer, expects 2018’s Taste turnout to exceed last year’s approximately 8,000 attendees.
“I’d say 99 percent of Broad Ripple merchants and residents are behind the Taste,” he says. “Last year some of the restaurants and businesses that were part of the footprint of Taste were concerned about having the streets blocked off, but after the event was over we heard that they had record nights.” Joshua John, BRVA president, says expanding the physical size of the event has presented its own logistical challenges, including additional permit gathering for blocking area streets off during the event, but he feels the additional time and effort has been worthwhile to present a bigger, better Taste for the city.
“We were hoping for 5,000 last year, so it was great to beat that,” Ross says. “That's one of the reasons why we’re going with a bigger footprint this year - we're going all the way down Broad Ripple Avenue, from Chase Bank down to Noodles & Company. Last year it was a little tight at times. So it won’t be as crowded as it was last year and “Expanding along Broad Ripple Avenue is there will be room for our increased number a great step in the right direction for us,” of food vendors.” says John, an investment advisor and senior loan officer with LJI Wealth Management Thirty eateries will be setting up shop for who has been with the BRVA since 2014. the event, which runs from 3 p.m. to 10 “It’ll be more like Georgia Street where p.m., including BRICS, The Garden Table, you can really have a party-like atmosphere BurgerFuel, The Jazz Kitchen, HoiTea happening.” ToiTea, Louie’s Wine Dive & Ripple Kitchen, HotBox Pizza and more. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., five local chefs will participate in a Chef ’s Night Off cook-off, In 2015 Ross reached out to the Broad showing off their culinary chops as part of Ripple Village Association (BRVA) board a competition judged by a local celebrity about bringing the event back, and it wasn’t panel. VIP tasting tickets are available. long before local businesses began throwing their support behind the idea. This year will also include a Riley Kids Play Area in the parking lot behind The Vogue, a 8 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atBRip.com
Colts interactive museum, a cash-only beer and cocktail garden, and a Kids’ Tasty Pizza tent, sponsored by HotBox Pizza, where youngsters can create and enjoy their very own eight-inch pizzas. Taste coordinators are still welcoming volunteers (see below for contact info), and all volunteers get free admission to the event. Ross feels that a physical expansion of this year’s Taste was a natural next step in the event’s evolution. “We had worked a little with the guys who did Taste of Bloomington, and they said after starting with a smaller footprint, they expanded and it made a difference because people have more room to hang out and they could bring in more food vendors and it was just more open,” Ross adds. “This year we're giving people plenty of room to enjoy the food and listen to the music.” The Main Stage will feature four live bands including Bigfoot Yancey, Clint Breeze & The Groove, the Stampede String Band and headliner the Main Squeeze, a national touring act originally from Bloomington and now based in Los Angeles. Ross says one of the primary reasons for putting on the event is to showcase the Village’s eclectic mix of food, shopping and
entertainment for those not only around the city but also statewide. “You can come here and pretty much do anything and everything,” Ross says. “There have been a few naysayers, but once the merchants and residents see the crowd that comes, they see that it helps businesses. Anything to make it more fun here is going to help Broad Ripple and the property values and improve the entire neighborhood. That’s an important part of it.” Taste of Broad Ripple 2018: The Details When: Saturday, June 16, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Where: On the open streets of Broad Ripple Village, which will be closed to traffic for several blocks. Knocking on doors trying to get anyone to take a chance on his business took a while, but once he did, he was able to build one of only a few jewelers that had a full-time staff dedicated to creating custom jewelry, working on repairs and creating custom molds. Once his wholesale business was developed, he took the next step of opening up a retail store in 1998. Achieving his dream of creating a successful jewelry business over a 20-year period is what gave him the ability to recognize the hard work, vision and effort that Mann was doing to fulfill her dream. The partnership was formed and along
with it an opportunity for the public to know more about Pippa and her commitment to not just the IndyCar racing series but Indianapolis. The social media contest will result in one lucky winner receiving a $500 shopping spree at Master Jewelers. The contest was announced on Facebook and is also on Instagram and Twitter. Mann has selected seven different pieces of jewelry that she will be wearing throughout May. All that the public needs to do is “catch” Pippa wearing jewelry in the month of May and snap a photo. These pictures or videos can come from any media outlet, including news, websites and Pippa’s social media networks. The only catch is that the picture or video must have been posted or published in the month of May. Most important, the entries must include the hashtag #SpottingPippasPicks to be eligible. In addition to providing beautiful jewelry to one of the most widely recognized female race car drivers in the world, Master Jewelers is also dedicated to offering beautiful jewelry, custom and designer, along with modifying any custom jewelry that you already own. So when you are racing around looking for a beautiful piece of jewelry to wear, need help repairing a special piece or to create custom jewelry, give Michael Neylon a call at Master Jewelers at 317-623-8692.

SoBro American Legion Post 34 Celebrates New Chef & Events Space
Writer / Megan Jefferson Photographer / Ron Wise
Bill Roberts is Adjutant of the American Legion, Post 34 on 54th Street. Having the role of adjutant is similar to being a General Manager. Roberts has been a member of Post 34 for 12 years and now helps organize the daily operations. The American Legion Post 34 has been serving veterans since it opened in 1922. Their goal is to provide a safe haven for Active Military men and women, veterans and their families. They are a non-profit, volunteer organization that puts those who are or have served first before anyone or anything else. They show gratitude to them and their families. Post 34 sponsors four non-profit organizations and one post project that aide in educating the youth and in serving those who have served and are serving. Post 34 has a large membership of 750 people, which is made up of three groups. American Legion members are those who have served in the military. Sons of the Legion are men whose father or grandfather are veterans and the Auxiliary includes women – wives and daughters of legion members. The building serves as a community space, they have a bar and restaurant, a dart board for gaming and host programs for members. Recently, Post 34 got a new chef, Devin Stallcup, grandson of Judy Guerra, owner and founder of Just Judy’s Restaurant – which used to be located next door to the American Legion building. Stallcup has been working under his grandmother for years, learning all of her tricks of the trade. “We were looking to make a change in our kitchen. We talked to Judy a year ago about having her grandson do our work, but he wasn’t quite ready,” Roberts says. “He is now ready and started working with us in April. We are excited to offer quality food at good prices.”
Devin Stallcup is Post 34's new chef.

Roberts says that serving Veterans is his favorite part of being involved with Post 34. “We are trying to share with the veterans a place they can come and go and use the facilities,” Roberts says. “It’s camaraderie for people to come in and visit and chat. We are also happy to share our community with the public. Our mission statement says it all: If we can’t find it in our hearts to support our military people and their families. How can we ask the military to support us?”

Broad Ripple Cafe Offers Cozy Atmosphere, German-inspired Breads & Treats Writer / Megan Jefferson Photographer / Andre Jefferson
When in Broad Ripple Village, it’s hard not to want to meander through the streets and visit the cute houses that are now homes to small businesses. Perk Up Café is one of these cottages turned coffee shops that needs to be on your list of places to visit, especially if you’re fond of artisanal breads and pastries. Alice Matsuo and Jeanette Footman are coowners of Perk Up Café, which they bought in 2009. They came together to purchase the café after having rich life experiences in various places in the world and put their love of baking to work here in Indianapolis. Matsuo is a third generation BrazilianJapanese woman raised in Brazil and then lived all over the world. While living in Germany, she became fascinated with the tradition of German artisan bread baking and decided to complete a three-year apprenticeship program to become a German artisan baker. She also holds a BA in Chemistry. Her love for the art of bread baking and fascination regarding the science behind it fuels her passion to create tasty treats sold at the café and farmers markets too.

Footman was born in Germany and it was there she met her husband, who is from Indianapolis. She moved here when they got married and apart from her family, she also missed German breads and pastries the most. She started baking and sold her pastries at Perk Up Café before she became co-owner. The community response to Perk Up Café has been overwhelmingly positive. “People of all ages like it here, everyone gets a feeling that they’re welcome,” Footman says. “They come in, even if they don’t know anyone, they can participate in conversation and it’s like a little family.” Every Sunday from noon-3pm you can come and experience kaffeeklatsch, German coffee time where you can enjoy coffee, cake and conversation. The atmosphere in Perk Up is cozy, dogs are welcome and everything served is baked in house, using quality ingredients, unbleached artisan flour and no chemical products, coloring agents or preservatives are ever used. The menu is filled with Panini sandwiches, bagels, pretzels, French toast, muffins and artisan breads. The most popular items are the egg sandwich and the Dirty Hippie – a hot Chai tea with a shot of espresso. Matsuo and Footman are proud that they are women running a successful business, which they love. They bake overnight from Friday to Saturday and even roast their own beans. Their quest is to introduce customers to the marvelous world of fresh breads. Broad Ripple is fortunate to have a little slice of Germany in the village. Perk Up Café is located at 6536 Cornell Ave. Visit them online at perkupindy.com or give them a call at 317-251-0033. atBrip.com / JUNE 2018 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / 27

We live in a city filled with exciting summer activities for all ages. Whether you like to spend time wining and dining, a night under the stars, or a combination of both something for everyone is available here in Indy. I’ve compiled a list of 10 things to keep you, your family and your friends entertained this summer.
1. VISIT A FARMERS’ MARKET
Make your grocery list and check out the farmers’ markets in your town. Local vendors bring their best produce, meats, wines, flowers, baked goods and everything in between to these markets. I’m planning to check out the Fishers market a few times this summer. 30 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atBRip.com
2. P ICNIC CONCERT SERIES AT MALLOW RUN
This is one of my favorite ways to spend Saturday night on Indy’s southside. Mallow Run always has great bands, delicious food trucks and, of course, amazing wine. This series runs through September, and you can check out the concert lineup at mallowrun.com.
3. EXPLORE MASS AVE
The Mass Ave area is constantly changing, adding new restaurants, wineries and local businesses. You could easily spend an afternoon enjoying brunch, visiting the shops and stopping for wine tasting. It’s a lively area that’s great for a girl’s night or a date night. 4. VISIT CONNER PRAIRIE
Conner Prairie has always been a favorite for me. My family and I used to go every Fourth of July when I was younger, and last year we started the tradition again. This is another great way to get the kids out of the house, learn some history and enjoy a beautiful summer day. 5. R UOFF HOME MORTGAGE MUSIC CENTER
The name of the venue may change many more times, but the music will always be great. The lineup for summer looks especially tailgate worthy. Pro tip for experiencing concerts at Ruoff: arrive early and stay late. Beat the traffic by packing a picnic and plan to stay well after the concert ends so bring snacks for that too. 6. CHECK OUT AN ART FAIR
8. E NJOY DINNER IN DOWNTOWN GREENWOOD
This area has been revamped over the years and it is home to some well-known local businesses. One of my favorite places to dine is La Trattoria. Their steak is so tender and pairs nicely with a glass of Pinot Noir. I’d recommend reservations for the weekends. 9. H IKE AND CAMP AT TURKEY RUN BONUS
We are fortunate to be a city filled with artistic events including art fairs. Talbot Street is coming up June 16-17 so if you’re looking for handmade pottery, unique paintings or handcrafted jewelry add this to your summer calendar.
My husband and I love to spend summer nights in the woods, making hot dogs and s’mores over a fire. Turkey Run is one of our favorite state parks in Indiana with some great hiking trails. You can reserve a campsite and enjoy a night under the stars.
7. SPEND A DAY AT GEIST 10. VISIT COXHALL GARDENS
Did you know you can rent a pontoon boat at Geist? Spending a weekend on the water is one of my favorite ways to soak up the summer sun. We always like to do a pitchin and have everyone bring their favorite appetizers. Grab a group of up to 10 friends and reserve your boat for the day.
Bike, walk, play, listen to music, you can do it all at Coxhall Gardens in Carmel. It’s a beautiful open space, perfect for a picnic while watching the sunset. It’s open to the public although the space is also used for weddings and other special events. atBrip.com / JUNE 2018 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / 31
Take a day trip to Holiday World While this isn’t exactly local for those of us in Central Indiana, Holiday World makes for such a great day trip at any age. We like to spend a day in the water park every year with a group of friends. It’s about a 3-hour drive from Indianapolis and the weekends are insanely busy so plan accordingly. I suggest going during the week if possible. I always like to make a summer bucket list, and all of these are on mine. You’ll also find me enjoying a sweet, cold treat at Nicey’s in Broad Ripple. No matter how you choose to spend your summer, I encourage you to try something new, visit a new place and have an adventure here in Indy.
