rank Reich’s coaching career has truly come full circle, and he couldn’t be happier. The new Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts is right back where it all started for him. Reich began his career in 2006 with the Colts as an intern before working his way up to quarterbacks coach in 2009 alongside Colts legends Tony Dungy, Peyton Manning and Bill Polian. Those relationships, coupled with a resume that now includes a Super Bowl ring as the Offensive Coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles last year, have helped Reich land a job that he says is a dream come true. In many ways, Reich is back home in Indianapolis. “If I could have written up a plan of what would be the ideal scenario, the ideal team and place, this was it,” Reich says.
“Indianapolis is where I got my coaching start. I came into the organization and got to work with guys like Peyton Manning, Tony Dungy, Jeff Saturday the list goes on, but these are great men. To get a chance to come back here now is pretty special.” The Reichs have ties to the Indy community, which has certainly made the reunion feel like a homecoming of sorts for the family. Two of Reich’s three daughters graduated high school in the area when he first started with the Colts in 2006 — his middle daughter from Hamilton Southeastern and his youngest daughter from Heritage Christian. “The Hoosier hospitality has been unbelievable,” Reich says. “This is like home to us. We have family in this area and developed close friendships from my first time here. I’m thankful for the opportunity to be back.” While Reich wasn’t the first choice for atBrip.com / JULY 2018 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / 7
the position, the Colts quickly realized he was the best fit. After the fallout with Josh McDaniels, several reports said Polian, Dungy and Manning personally reached out to Colts Owner Jim Irsay and General Manager Chris Ballard to endorse Reich for the head coaching position. Reich watched from afar and, despite his interest, did not make the first move in having his agent reach out to the Colts. Instead, he decided if it was meant to be that it would be. Looking back now, Reich says the endorsement of those Colts legends is humbling. “It really is humbling because those are some tremendous men, coaches and players,” Reich says. “In this business you just try to work hard and do your job. You work around a lot of great people and learn a lot from them. When people like that give you a vote of confidence, it means a lot.”
Faith & Football Reich has something on his resume that not too many NFL coaches have. After being drafted in 1985 by the Buffalo Bills and playing in the NFL for nine seasons, Reich took a break from football but knew he would want to return to coach one day. Before the desire to coach in 2006, Reich actually felt called to ministry and went to seminary. He even served as pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina — living out his faith and serving the community. Reich isn’t shy about his faith, either. He says it has played a vital role in his life and shaping him as a leader and a man. “I wouldn’t change one day of being in ministry,” Reich says. “It has really shaped and formed me as a person. Going into ministry was something I really felt called to do. I didn’t know where it was going to take me, but I knew that I loved coaching people and encouraging people. I learned about myself as a teacher during that time. To continue to develop those gifts and take them back into coaching in the NFL has been a lot of fun.”
Working Out In Westfield As the Colts gear up for their first season under Reich, they’ve found a new home for the summer — Grand Park in Westfield. The huge, 400-acre sports complex will host the team from the end of July through August for training camp. It is the first summer the Colts will work out at the facility in a deal the team announced back in September that will span 10 years. The Colts will host an open camp and provide opportunities for fans to connect with the team and the players throughout the summer. One of Reich’s first tasks after taking over as head coach was to visit Grand Park, and he has been nothing less than impressed by the facility.
Frank Reich returns to the Colts after serving as quarterbacks coach in 2009 with Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy. 8 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atBRip.com
“The people here, the staff has been so accommodating,” Reich says. “When you are going to host an NFL team for training camp, that is a pretty big deal. This place is so incredible that it can handle it, but it isn’t just about the facility. It is about the people. We’ve found that the people here are top notch and helping us do something that is exciting for our team and the City of Westfield. “I remember the first time driving up,” Reich adds. “They told me a little about it, but as we are driving up you see all of these fields. Then you walk inside and there are three, full-size soccer fields. I’ve never seen a facility like it.”
Getting Back on Track With the season right around the corner, Reich’s focus is to get the Colts back on track. He is well aware of the fanbase and the team’s expectations. Luck or no Luck, Reich’s goals remain the same — playing hard and being in a position to get back to the playoffs. The Colts have built the team and the draft that they wanted, and despite Andrew Luck’s status for the season, Reich is confident that the team can perform at a high level.
At Conner Prairie, you can go wherever your imagination takes you. With hundreds of acres to explore, including our newly reimagined River Crossing experience area, we’re igniting curiosity and inspiring guests to discover new lessons in the natural world that surrounds us.
“It’s all about the people and the process,” Reich says. “We just have to build the team one player at a time and have the commitment and the work ethic. When that happens, it doesn’t take long. You can flip your record in a hurry in the NFL. I was just a part of it with Philadelphia. But we all have to do it together, and it really has to be an organizational thing. The players and the coaches have to be tight, and there has to be a trust in one another and a willingness to commit to fighting for it every day no matter what.” atBrip.com / JULY 2018 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / 9

A RELENTLESS
LEGACY DOUG MITCHELL REFLECTS ON 25 YEARS AS NORTH CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL’S BASKETBALL COACH Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Brian Brosmer
When asked about the key to his successes as a high school basketball coach over three decades, Doug Mitchell comes back to a certain word repeatedly - relentless. “I’m a rather relentless person when it comes to competition,” says Mitchell, 61. “You have to be determined in everything you do, especially when it comes to having a successful basketball program - there’s no way around it.”
Even at the age of six when his father put up a rim at the farm Mitchell grew up on in Arcadia, Indiana, he was applying a relentless determination to the first shots he ever took. “I remember shooting it over the backboard and thinking, ‘That’s not too easy,’” he says with a laugh. “I started working hard at it.” Mitchell began organized basketball in the fourth grade, and by the time he was hooping it up at Hamilton Heights High School, he saw the sport as both a source 12 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atBRip.com
of true enjoyment and a means to a college education and a fulfilling career. “I always wanted to play and possibly coach, and I figured the way off the farm was to get a scholarship - that was the motivation,” he recalls. Former Butler University head coach George Theofanis recruited Mitchell to his program, where he progressed into a starter and team captain as a junior and senior. After Mitchell’s sophomore year, Theofanis was replaced Joe Sexson, with whom
coach at Lawrence Central and Hamilton Heights high schools, followed by six years as a full-time assistant with Butler. All the while, the desire for a head coaching position at the high school varsity level grew stronger and stronger. “Towards the end of my time at Butler, I didn’t like the time away from home and being away from my kids,” says Mitchell, who has three daughters, Taylor, 34, Morgan, 27 and Payton, 22, with his wife Deborah. “I was getting into my late 30s and I was ready to stay in one place and be a head coach.” A LEGACY LEFT Doug Mitchell compiled a 428-176 overall record, coaching nine Indiana all-stars and four Mr. Basketball winners along the way.
Mitchell would work in a coaching capacity later on at Butler. Mitchell jokes that he’s always been able to commiserate with players of his own who don’t see much time on the court, drawing on his own experience during his first two collegiate years. “My players could never say I don’t know how they feel sitting on the bench, because I definitely do,” he says. “I’m grateful to both my coaches at Butler though, and to Joe Sexson for giving me a chance to play.” After graduating with a degree in education in 1979, Mitchell served as junior varsity
Prior to Mitchell’s first season at North Central in 1993, the Panthers, while competitive, were not revered as a yearin, year-out powerhouse boys basketball program. He was determined to change the program’s status, and within a few years had begun to make a distinctive mark on Hoosier high school hoops, eventually winning 11 sectional titles, four regional titles and Class 4A state championships in 1999 and 2010. “I had seen North Central enough to know that they had enough talent to win state championships,” Mitchell says. “I was extremely excited to start.” And he certainly made the most of his time at the school, compiling a 428-176 overall record. Mitchell coached nine Indiana all-stars and four Mr. Basketball winners including Eric Gordon, who currently plays for the Houston Rockets, and IUPUI men’s atBrip.com / JULY 2018 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / 13
basketball coach Jason Gardner. “Doug cares about the kids on and off the floor,” says Walt Morris, Mitchell’s assistant coach at North Central for the last 20 years. “There were times when he gave up some wins from sitting kids down or suspending them, because he wanted to do what was best. He cared more about the outcome of their lives than just winning.” In 2008 Mitchell won a gold medal as head coach for the USA Basketball Junior National Select Team at the 11th Annual Nike Hoop Summit, after coaching as an assistant the previous year, and also served as assistant coach of the 2003 McDonald’s High School All-American East team, which included current NBA stars LeBron James, Chris Paul and Luol Deng. “Doug got the best out of his kids and they always played as hard as they could for him - that was always non-negotiable,” Morris says. “He knew how to play to his players’ strengths and knew also how to get out of their way, which is not something many coaches or teachers really know how to do.” Mitchell credits Morris and the rest of his Panthers coaching staff throughout the years, as well as the example set by his elementary, high school and college coaches, as key factors in his long-term success. “You just have to be relentless,” Mitchell reiterates. “If there’s a problem, 95 percent of people start to complain about it and don’t fix it. What I learned from my own coaches is to identify the problem and come
up with a plan and a solution for it - and get to work. That was our formula through the years.” When tragedy struck in 2002 and Mitchell lost his son Bryce, 16 at the time, in a car accident, he says it was his passion for coaching and the life lessons that came with it, in addition to crucial support from family and friends, that helped to see him through such a difficult time. “I don’t think I could’ve gotten through some of the hard times in my life if it weren’t for athletics, because you learn that when you don’t think you can take another step, you can take another step,” he says. LOOKING BACK, LOOKING FORWARD Mitchell announced his retirement in April and says he never had a bored moment in 25 years at North Central, 37 total years of coaching and 30 as a teacher. “It’s just time,” he says of his decision. “I don’t feel I have anything else to prove. Once you get over chasing all the wins, you ask yourself what you’re really doing it for, and that’s to help kids. Those are my fondest memories - helping kids to get scholarships and now seeing them as successful people in society. So my heart’s full there.” While Mitchell’s post-coaching plans are still up in the air, he says they’re certain to include more time with his wife, daughters and grandsons - Eli, 9, and Izaak, 8 - as well as plenty of golf, one of his other passions. “I'd also like to be able to speak to groups and help people as far as what we went through when we lost our son,” he adds. “I lost a brother when he was 28 and I was going into my senior year at Butler. Recovering from those things and moving on is a tough trick, and I think I can help people with that." Whatever Mitchell chooses to do with his post-retirement time, he’ll surely be doing it the only way he knows how. RELENTLESSLY. 14 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atBRip.com

Colleen Fanning took over as executive director on April 1.
Around the Corner NEW BRVA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OPTIMISTIC ABOUT FUTURE PROJECTS & INITIATIVES
Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Amy Payne
The Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) has hit the ground running in 2018 with several endeavors that Colleen Fanning, executive director since April 1, and her fellow BRVA members feel will improve the area’s visual aesthetic as well as its commercial and cultural diversity. “We’re excited about the direction Broad Ripple is heading,” says Fanning, a 15-year Broad Ripple resident who has served on
the Marion County City County Council representing District 2 since 2016. In assuming BRVA executive director duties, Fanning replaced Brooke Klejnot, a Fort Wayne native who served since 2012. One of the BRVA’s 2018-2019 top priorities according to Fanning is the beautification of Broad Ripple Avenue between College Avenue and Monon Trail. Wider sidewalks, decorative lighting and street trees are planned, as well as new hardware and electrical components for concerts and atBrip.com / JULY 2018 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / 17
special events. “The beautification project is in the survey and engineering phase right now, and it will probably be next year when it starts,” says Fanning, adding that the Department of Public Works (DPW) plans to dig up the street from College to the Monon Trail and alleviate drainage issues prior to the planned improvements. BRVA president Joshua John says a projected cost for the beautification project
has not yet been set, and the group’s goal with the project is to enable the Avenue to accommodate pedestrian-friendly events such as farmers markets and street festivals. “We want Broad Ripple Avenue to remain a thoroughfare, but have the option to close off traffic and activate that space similar to Georgia Street downtown,” he says, adding that wider sidewalks will necessitate removal of some street parking. The BRVA is in full fundraising mode after securing approval for a DPW matching grant for the organization’s Riverwalk Promenade project, which will connect Broad Ripple Park to the Monon Trail and Broad Ripple Avenue. The grant approval guarantees $750,000 at minimum and a maximum of $1,500,000 for the project, and the BRVA is hopeful construction will start next spring. “Whatever the final infrastructure costs are that we are approved for, we have to come up with matching funds or matching dollar donations,” says John, a BRVA member since 2014 and an investment advisor and senior loan officer with LJI Wealth Management. “We’re kicking off a fundraising campaign soon to raise the funds, which we must have by the end of November. We’ve already raised close to $40,000.” Bike lanes along Broad Ripple Avenue between Winthrop Avenue and Broad Ripple Park will be removed to accommodate the Promenade, which will be constructed along the north side of the Avenue. John says the BRVA board expects the Riverwalk Promenade’s physical appearance to reflect Indy’s Cultural Trail, with overlooks near the park’s entrance and near Weaver’s Lawn & Garden Shop. “Broad Ripple Park is going through a master planning process as well, and, ultimately, the design of the Promenade will meet up with those existing plans and continue throughout the 67 acres of the park,” adds John, a Broad Ripple area resident since 2001. The BRVA also continues to work alongside 18 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atBRip.com
local landlords to seek out a diverse range of businesses for the area, and John says the owners of the commercial building at 743 Broad Ripple Avenue, formerly tenanted by Hardwicke’s Pipe & Tobacco and occupied by Kimmel Shoe Repair recently, contracted with a commercial realtor to sell the property.

GRAB A PINT Co-owner Jerry Connor
FAMILY-OWNED BIER BREWERY STILL SERVING UP CRAFT BREWS 8 YEARS LATER Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Amy Payne
Having expanded from a nano-brewery in 2010 to a 20-barrel, full-production facility with more than 130 beer selections in less than seven years, one might assume Bier Brewery has found it increasingly difficult to keep its focus on putting out quality craft brews. However, co-owner Jerry Connor says the opposite is true of the Broad Ripple-based brewery he launched with his
sons Darren and Ryan.
worked at Bloomington Brewing Company for several years while working toward his “When you focus on quality and degree, Darren’s interest in craft beer had consistency, it’s not difficult to grow bubbled up into a full-blown passion, and naturally,” Jerry says. “If your business plan he took a job for the next 10 years at Great is based on quantity that’s where you can get Fermentations - Bier’s neighbor on East into trouble sometimes, but we’ve always 65th Street. In 2010, Darren and Jerry felt put our energies into quality and attention the time was right to try their hand at a to detail. Focus, focus, focus - that’s what nano-brew operation and officially launched we’re all about.” the business the night before Thanksgiving. Soon demand began to increase, and even By the time he graduated from IU, having after expanding to a seven-barrel system, the atBrip.com / JULY 2018 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / 21
Connors could barely keep up with orders. “The demand is really what drove our growth, so it hasn’t just been a matter of trying to grow just for the sake of it,” Jerry says. “We were the first nano in Indy and the second brewery to open after Sun King. It’s not just a hobby for us - it’s a passion and a profession. We continue to pay attention to the small details. There are no shortcuts.” It’s truly a family effort. Darren heads up brewing operations while Jerry handles marketing and Ryan serves as sales director. With nine rotating selections offered on tap at the colorful taproom, the Connors and their staff offer growler fills and pint sales and offers snacks as well as menus from several nearby eateries for carry-in. Bier now has a presence in more than 350 local restaurants, bars and liquor stores, and works with four Indiana distributors. Despite their consistent expansion, the Connors have no plans to be anything other than a family-operated business focused on making a great product. “The challenge is to continue to make the best beer in the area, and do it with quality,” Jerry says. “We want to continue to be a leader as one of the first breweries here and touching as many people as we can and introducing ourselves to new customers.” Customer favorites include Weisengoot, a 22 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atBRip.com
German-style Hefeweizen, Special Kolsch and PDG, an American pale ale. Bier began canning in 2015, and since then has offered 10 canned flavors including Dankzilla Red IPA, Trackbier American Lager and Baseline IPA. Each year at Christmas time the Connors roll out Sanitarium, a Belgian quadrupel that the staff ages in kegs for 12 months. Bier has taken home 70 Indiana Brewers’ Cup medals over the years, along with two gold medals at the 2016 Brewers Association World Beer Cup for Sanitarium and ESB (Extra Special Bitter). “One of our friends calls our Sanitarium the Michael Phelps of Indiana beer, since it’s won so many awards,” Jerry says with a laugh. “Part of the batch we brew for that goes into bourbon barrels for aging as well.” Proof of the Connors’ devotion to detail lies not only in the beer they crank out each week, but even in the hardware they use. Darren designed Bier’s 65th Street facility and had its refrigeration system and tap handles specially made. “You could call Darren the MacGyver of brewing,” Jerry says. “There isn’t anything he can’t fix or design and come up with. He’s got a stainless-steel welder that he goes to that helps us out.” When asked about the likelihood of expanding to additional taprooms, Jerry says anything is possible - particularly given Bier’s strong local and statewide demand. “We’re always looking for expansion opportunities,” he says. “I hate to say we’re definitely doing something until we actually do it, but we always have our eyes open and looking for the right opportunity and location.” Visit Bier Brewery and Taproom at 5133 East 65th Street in Indianapolis. Writer / Stephanie Weber Photographer / Collin Weber
The heat in July is sweltering in Indy. We are all looking for the quickest way to cool off so days spent in the pool or in the air conditioning have become a necessity. One of my favorite ways to beat the heat is to enjoy something deliciously chilled. Our city has some of the best ice cream shops
that are ready to cool you off. Read on for my seven favorites in Indy. 1. BRICS IN BROAD RIPPLE
If you’re headed to Broad Ripple and want to walk the Monon Trail, you can stop at BRICS along the way. I personally enjoy the Carmel x3, but you also can’t go wrong with Butler Pecan. 24 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atBRip.com
2. GRAETER’S
This ice cream shop has three locations in and around Indianapolis. The one I frequent is located in Carmel near the City Center. I love their Dutch Milk Chocolate, but all of the flavors here are deliciously rich and creamy.
3. MRS CURL
This one is hands down the best soft serve on the southside of Indianapolis. They place a teddy graham in your selection and you can order my favorite, a swirl cone. They also have hot dogs and other food options so you can make a whole meal out of it. With affordable prices, you can gather the whole family and all your friends for a picnic. You might also see their truck at a few summer events around the city. 4. RITTER'S
When I was little, Ritter’s was a common stop for our family. They have different flavors of the day including my favorite, Chocolate Covered Banana. They are also known for their blizzards, served upsidedown to prove their thickness. The Cookie Dough blizzard is always a solid option. 5. NICEY TREAT
For the lactose-free, this one should be on your list. It’s located in Broad Ripple and Fountain Square. They handmake all their popsicles with natural ingredients to create a variety of flavors. Personally, I prefer Strawberry Mint and Pineapple Basil. Although these are technically popsicles, Nicey offers a cool treat on a stick with the creamy factor of regular ice cream. 6. HANDEL’S
With a line that’s always long on summer nights, this is a local favorite in Fishers and Carmel. My first trip to the location on 116th street was actually in May. I was pleasantly surprised to discover a couple of dairy-free options. I enjoyed a cup of the Chocolate Almond Milk with bananas on top while my husband devoured a sugar cone full of the Chocoholic Chunk. 7. SUB ZERO
Yes, the name was also intriguing to me too which is why I walked in with a few atBrip.com / JULY 2018 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / 25
friends to the Mass Ave location a few months ago. Essentially liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the ice cream and it’s pretty entertaining to watch. You pick your flavor and any toppings and then watch it freeze in front of your eyes. Because the portions are large and we had just come from lunch, we shared a cup of the Cake Batter with sprinkles. There are also locations at Castleton Mall and in Carmel. These seven cold treat stops are just a handful of what’s available here in Indy. I’ve been to each of these and enjoy the atmosphere combined with the menu. Grab the kids, call your friends and embrace the heat with a trip to one of these ice cream shops. Aside from going to a waterpark or running through sprinklers, cold treats are the perfect way to enjoy a summer evening in Indy. Which one will you visit next?

Out In the Wild White Pine Wilderness Academy Offers Outdoor Learning Programs For All Ages Writer / Megan Jefferson Photographer / Andre Jefferson
White Pine Wilderness Academy is located on the outskirts of Broad Ripple, on the island of Rocky Ripple, between the White River and the canal. The school offers unique, comprehensive outdoor learning programs for kids, teens and adults. Matt Shull, founder, owner and instructor is from Indianapolis and started White Pine five years ago. Shull grew up being mentored by his grandfather, a naturalist and published Entomologist, who wrote, “The Butterflies of Indiana.” His grandfather spent 25 years living in India, working as a shikari, a professional tracker. As a shikari, he was responsible for tracking down
tigers and other large cats that had taken to attacking people. Shull was raised hearing these incredible stories of stalking and harvesting man-eating tigers. This instilled in Shull a reverence, an awe of nature. After graduating from high school, Shull headed to the Rocky Mountains and got a job working in the national park for four years. His love of nature continued to grow. He spent the next 20 years traveling all around the world, living in different remote areas in the Cascades, the Sierras and the Himalayan Mountains.
Shull wanted to start a school in his home, here in the Eastern Woodlands, where people are very disconnected from nature. “There’s an attitude here that makes people feel as though they need to go elsewhere to experience an outdoor adventure or connection,” he says. “I wanted to dive in and start here, in our community. I created something that shows everyone there is amazing things in Indiana.”
White Pine Wilderness Academy was designed to address nature deficit disorder. This term was coined by Richard Louv, He then decided that he wanted to teach who wrote several books about how this people what he had come to know so well, deficit affects everyone, in particular, that a deep connection to nature, primitive the development of kids. nature and builds roots of connection – connection to self, community and ancestry. The academy’s land is filled with interesting structures like a large rope swing and play equipment for both kids and adults. There’s a large wall for shooting bows with soft arrows for target practice and play. A yurt with a cozy wood burning stove is filled with furs, diagrams and tools for carving and building. There is a fire pit where lots of meaningful conversations take place as well. Programming is available to people of all ages. For adults, there are classes offered in herbalism and foraging, high-speed survival and more. For kids, day camps for homeschoolers and after school camps are offered year-round. There are also seasonal summer camps.
through their fears and inhibitions to find their strengths. Through games, stories and adventure hikes, children are bought into a new relationship with nature. They have the freedom to wander and explore with master naturalists who work as guides, Class sizes are small and the mentoring ratio providing an ideal backdrop for discovery. Kids learn bow making, mapping, ecology is kept at 1 to 5. The classes provide youth with a full body, full sensory immersion into and survival skills – how to make fires and shelters. their environment. Students are mentored

“Kids thrive in free play and on non-linear playgrounds,” Shull says. “They need to climb trees, scrape their knees every once in a while and learn boundaries. They will come home tired, dirty and filled with stories and enthusiasm that will inspire the entire family.” The full offering of classes and more information can be found online at whitepinewilderness.com.
