THE CRAFTY ANIMAL ART SHOP FOSTERS AND CELEBRATES CREATIVITY Writer / Molly Dykstra Photographer / Michael Durr
n July of 2021, the Broad Ripple arts community welcomed its newest member, Audwynn Newman, owner and creator of The Crafty Animal. This eclectic shop features work from more than 35 artists, and it is also Newman’s studio. While his work is wellknown, many of the artists featured in the space have not had the visibility they need to showcase their talent. Newman’s mission is to help these artists market themselves and get their work out in the world, while continuing to create his own. Creating art has always been a part of Newman’s life. Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, he remembers watching “Superhost” Marty Sullivan and Indiana’s own Sammy Terry. The superheroes and monsters he saw inspired him to draw and create his own. This passionate spark was fanned even brighter when he attended high school in Massachusetts. It was there

that a teacher introduced him to a variety of new methods and mediums. He learned about using fabric and wood in art on a variety of surfaces, and he excelled at oldschool drawing techniques. “We came up in a time that we didn’t have computers that did stuff for us,” Newman says. “You kind of had to manifest things from different mediums.” This background helped him land his first art job, drawing for Marvel Comics and DC comics. As a penciller, he worked on such characters as Spider-Girl, Blade, Turac, Calypso, Excalibur and Conan. The work made him capable of producing
art at a very fast pace without sacrificing quality. Often he had to produce two pages in a single day, and it had to be perfect. “Going through that machine taught me a ton,” Newman says. “I use it every day. Here we are 25 years later, and I am still doing that.” Newman knows how to produce art at a steady clip. Once he has a design mapped out, he hand-paints a run of them to sell. That run can be more than 100 pieces. This pays off for both artist and buyer, however, since it allows him to charge less while maintaining his level of quality
and detail. In a time when many artists are going digital to reproduce their work, Newman remains true to his vision and creates all of his art without computers. This was a conscious choice he arrived at while taking a Photoshop class many years ago. “I realized that if I continue on this path, there is no way I am going to be the artist I currently am and the artist I want to be,” he says. “I am so happy I didn’t do that and stayed with this. I’ve never looked back.” He works in a variety of mediums on a variety of subjects, and describes his work

as “art that identifies.” At the start of the pandemic, he did a piece called “Lady Liberty.” After posting the work, he got wonderful feedback. Everyone loved it, identified with its message and asked to share it. Within one month, however, the way some people perceived it had changed. Politically, one side continued loving it while the other felt differently. “It was never meant to be political,” he says. “It was meant to be like Lady Liberty has seen a lot in her years, and she is going to see a lot more. It was meant to say that this too shall pass.” The philosophy behind his “Lady Liberty” piece is an important one to Newman. He sees overcoming adversity as being a very important part of life, both as an individual and as part of a community. This way of looking at the world has

led him to write a children’s book, create films, and tell stories in many mediums. It is also what led him to start The Crafty Animal. Newman has big plans for his shop and the Broad Ripple art community. His ideas include street fairs, mentoring programs, classes, and opportunities for people to not only create art, but also learn how to get their work out into the world. Most of these plans will have to wait until 2022, however, because the holiday season is just around the corner and he would like his current group of shop artists to grow to about 45 by then. Currently he is showcasing artists and artisans skilled in fibers, painting, LEGO art, printing, mixed media, jewelry, drawing and woodturning. The list of skills and artists will continue to grow and change, but Newman’s message will remain the same. “This location is a vessel for creativity,” he says. The Crafty Animal is located at 6420 Cornell Avenue in Indianapolis. For more info, call 317-476-7074 or visit thecraftyanimal.com.

L
ocal filmmaker Brian Bowles has an affinity for making his own Batman short films.
Having already directed two Batman shorts, “Batman: The Death of Robin” and “Batman: Knightmare,” Bowles and his production company, BeSquared Productions, are in the midst of filming a third short film, titled “Batman: Fall of the Family,” which is tentatively due out early next year. Filmed across several Indianapolis locations, the latest film will mark the most elaborate project from Bowles to date, clocking in at about 40 minutes where both previous films have been closer to 10. “It’s been a struggle, but with the struggle comes some pretty amazing moments,” Bowles says. “I was restricted to one location for the last two films, but because we do have access to different locations for this film, it’s allowed me to really show my potential as a director.” Having lived in Indiana since the age of 3, Bowles says he initially got into filmmaking by accident.
“Originally, I trained in voice acting and started to do that,” Bowles says. “Kind of in the middle of that, I dropped it to do film. I started out with stupid public stunts, and then I said, ‘You know what? I want to make something a bit more serious, in terms of acting and directing.’ ” Bowles released his first Batman short film, “Batman: The Death of Robin,” in December of 2019. When asked about his passion for Batman and comic books, the director says he’s fairly new to that world as well. “I actually got into comics when ‘Iron Man’ first came out,” Bowles says. “People were freaking out about it, so I decided to explore the source material. I started reading comics from there.” When it came time to start making his first film, Bowles says he quickly realized “filmmaking is more difficult than it looks.” With help and guidance from cinematographer R.J. Maurer, he was able to navigate the process and successfully put together his first Batman short film.

“Filmmaking is finding a core group of people that work very well with each other and you, and finding people, from a director’s perspective, who respect you and respect what you want,” Bowles says. “Especially if you’re putting together the project, finding those passionate people can be difficult, but they are certainly out there if you look hard enough.”
impressive film to date. In reflecting on what led him up to this point, the filmmaker credits all the risks he’s taken along the way.
“It’s a deep character, and there are so many versions,” Bowles says. “Everyone, whether they’re a huge fan of Batman or not, has this idea of what the Joker should be, just because it’s a character that’s been around for so long. Creating my own version that people would accept and like was the biggest challenge.”
Follow BeSquared Productions on YouTube, and at facebook.com/ BeSquaredProductions, for updates on “Batman: Fall of the Family.”
“This third film we’re doing is a huge step up,” he says. “We have multiple locations, deeper story elements and all that jazz. This film is so massive, but I wouldn’t be in this position with such a big crew if I didn’t go out of my comfort zone and do it. It was definitely Bowles has also cast himself as the Joker in each of his Batman short nerve-racking, but I had a drive and passion, and it became what it films - an acting role that’s been expectedly difficult. became.”
Although his former cinematographer R.J. Maurer has since moved out of state, Bowles has found a new partner in crime to help on “Batman: Fall of the Family.” “R.J. moved to California so he’s not here any longer, but I’m with Brandon Benz right now,” Bowles says. “He’s a fantastic guy. He’s so incredibly knowledgeable in what he does. He’s selftaught, extremely talented and very sharp. He respects what I want, and I respect his knowledge. I’m always trying to take advice from him.” Looking ahead, Bowles says “Batman: Fall of the Family” will undoubtedly be his biggest, most 11 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2021 / BroadRippleMag.com

when we hold a print in our hands we can’t help but truly look at it and wonder or recall what it was like in that moment. We can absorb a print and not be tempted to swipe it away. We can revisit it over and over and over again. In this digital age, it might be beneficial to pause and preserve some of those moments that truly matter.
We at Broad Ripple Magazine want you to try this exercise. Take out your phone. Look through the images in your capture folder. Which one really tugs on your emotional heart strings? Send that image to a local printer and order a 4X6in print or maybe even a 5X7in or an 8X10in. Consider framing it, whether you buy one at a local shop or have one custom made. Then hang it on your wall or give it away as a gift.
If this project resonates with you. You can always take things a step further and purchase a new camera or maybe even jump back in time and find a used film camera. Perhaps this will inspire you to call upon a professional photographer and schedule a family portrait session, newborn announcement or special event.
“Photos of all nature, whether it be on your phone or you hire a professional, really are invaluable,” says local photographer Ayren Certa. “They are tiny snippets of time, frozen forever, and I think it's so important that we continue to seek out these moments through family and portrait photography. Every Fall I look forward to the influx of families, eager to have milestones captured to share with the world or the walls in their own home.”
True multimedia powerhouse.
Even as you flip through this magazine and look at the images throughout. Does it take on a different feel than swiping a screen? The images in this printed publication were selected for a reason. They tell a story and were chosen to invoke an emotion. “Emotion is the key element to my work,” Certa says. “Finding it, evoking it, capturing it and then sending it off to be cherished by clients. There is just something so sweet about seeing that all come to life beyond a screen. In a world where photographs really can last forever, there is merit in tangible art, and I hope everyone has the opportunity to experience that gift.”

PIE CRUST TIPS FOR THANKSGIVING Writer & Photographer / Amanda Gibson of @indydough
There’s so many ways to make pie, and there’s so many tips and tricks, it can become overwhelming. The thing is, pie doesn’t have to be difficult, and finding your own favorite recipes and tips and tricks just means more pie. Who can be mad at more pie? This pie crust recipe is basic, and no matter how many times I want to make it more complex, I always return back to simplicity. • 2 cups all purpose flour • 1 teaspoon kosher salt • 1 cup chilled cubed butter (2 sticks)

If it doesn’t stay together, add a teaspoon of water at a time until you can squeeze your shaggy dough and it holds together. If gluten is worked too much, your pie might turn out tough. If you’re rolling it out and it keeps shrinking back, let it sit to rest. • Time is really of the essence with pie dough • Depending on what you fill your pie with, you may need to blind bake your crust before use. Make sure you read all recipes all the way through. • Don’t throw away any excess pie dough. You can use it for a lattice on top, or bake it on its own and roll in cinnamon sugar for little pie crust sugar snacks.
