Rusted Moon Outfitters Is a Broad Ripple Go-to For Local Outdoorsmen Writer / Benjamin Lashar Photographer / Ryan Woodall

From families trying out camping for the first time to seasoned hikers preparing to backpack across Europe, every outdoorsman knows their gear can make or break their outing. Getting the right gear can be as simple as a few clicks on the computer, but that process is shallow and impersonal. Even in the age of digital shopping, nothing can beat passionate customer service. Broad Ripple’s Rusted Moon Outfitters hopes to embody this philosophy and

prove that nobody is better at selling goods to passionate outdoorsmen than other passionate outdoorsmen.

Moon. After some back and forth with cofounders Ron and Tonya, they decided on the name.

Rusted Moon’s unique approach to retail can be seen in its name. While calling the shop “Indianapolis Outdoors” might have been more business savvy, the owners wanted a more creative name that captured a feeling. One day when founder Henry Miller was driving and listening to Neil Young albums, he put his finger on that feeling. He came up with the name Rusted

Picking a name was the easy part, actually constructing the store proved much more difficult. The three founders put up their own money to build Rusted Moon from nothing. After getting the building in October 2001, a long and stressful construction process followed.

7 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atBRip.com

“I remember taking a brand-new truck to

the dealership and trading it for slap board for the walls,” Miller says. Eventually, all the hard work and sacrifice paid off, and Rusted Moon was open for business in March of 2002. Since then, Rusted Moon has left its mark on Broad Ripple. General Manager and founder Ron Lewis credits the store’s success to taking advantage of the small business status. “We try to look and see what we couldn’t do in a corporate environment and what the major stores can’t do and what the internet retailers can’t do for you, and we simply do those things,” he says.

" We try to look and see what we

couldn’t do in a corporate environment and what the major stores can’t do and what the internet retailers can’t do for you, and we simply do those things" - Ron Lewis

For example, Rusted Moon’s employees provide service rarely seen in chain stores or online. They are a common sight on local trails and rivers, so Rusted Moon employees are passionate about making sure their customers enjoy the outdoors as much as they do. This could mean helping a customer install a car rack, taking the time to fit a boot or using their knowledge to recommend the proper skis for a customer’s needs. In addition, Rusted Moon avoids the upselling tactics of other stores. Employees help customers find the best option, not the most expensive one. By matching customers to equipment and apparel that best fits their needs, Rusted Moon receives a low number of complaints and returns. One of the best parts of working at Rusted Moon is the other employees, specifically the four-legged ones. Rusted Moon not only allows people to bring in their dogs but also have three store dogs roam the isles. Miller notes how the dogs help employee morale. “If you could bring your dog, your best friend to work, wouldn’t you be happier to work?” Miller says. “I want the employees to be happy.” The dogs are often a calming presence during stressful work times. Of course, customers love the dogs just as much as the employees. 8 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atBRip.com

Many people, especially children, come to Rusted Moon just to pet the dogs. For many customers, the dogs are the most memorable part of the experience. While the three dogs currently in the store are second generation Rusted Moon dogs, customers still remember and reference the first generation of dogs. Between the friendly people and lovable dogs, Rusted Moon becomes more than a

store. It becomes a place where many people love to hang out. Ron says that many people “just want to come hang out with people they know around stuff they like in a cool atmosphere. We are like a bar with no beer that has outdoor toys.” Everyone at Rusted Moon welcomes both people who simply want to drink coffee and pet dogs to hardcore outdoorsmen. That being said, they also hope their store can

inspire more love for the outdoors in the community. After all, there are plenty of local places to get exercise and fresh air, and there is no better place to learn about them than Broad Ripple’s best outdoor store. Rusted Moon Outfitters is located at 6410 Cornell Ave, Indianapolis. You can give them a call at 317-253-4453 or visit them online at rustedmoonindy.com.

Synergy Spa’s Healing Garden Is a Beautiful, Best Kept Secret in Indy Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Amy Payne

It’s not uncommon for spas and aesthetic treatment facilities to feature soothing surroundings to help clients feel comfortable and welcome. Nevertheless, Synergy Spa on East 86th Street takes such a concept to a unique extent with what the staff refers to as an outdoor healing garden. Fifteen years ago Dr. Dale Guyer, owner of Indy's Guyer Institute of Molecular Medicine, acted on his interest in rare and unique plants seldom seen in Indiana and decided to build out a garden on the grounds of the Spa, which is located at the Institute. Dr. Guyer felt a garden would not only add striking visuals to the spa setting, but also create a tranquil healing environment conducive to a positive patient visit. The result is a colorful outdoor array of flowers and plants that Synergy Spa CEO Denise Kaler says ties into her staff ’s mission of providing comprehensive treatment. “It creates a sense of peace and inspiration that is supportive of the healing experience,” Kaler says of the garden, which includes a pond, bridge and small waterfall. “It adds to the concept of a holistic model of healing. Many will come to visit just to see the garden and often bring their friends.” Those strolling through the garden will find a large collection of rare conifers, Japanese maples and various perennials and shrubs, some of which are 50 years old and the rarest of which were acquired from various collectors around the country including Oregon. Vibrant purple, red, white and green plantings pervade the space, which also features swings and a picnic table. “We’ve even had people ask to come back to do a family photo shoot at the garden,” Kaler says. "People will come early for their appointment because they want to just walk through the garden or stay after just to relax. I think they like that it’s somewhat hidden and secluded. It’s kind of Indy’s little secret.”

Kaler says a small number of rare plants spread throughout the garden have continued to thrive despite not being native to Indiana soil and climate, and the staff continually monitors plant health, occasionally wrapping plants that need protection during particularly harsh winters. “It’s prettiest in summer with all the colors, but in the winter when there’s snow on the trees it’s also so pretty out there,” Kaler adds. “You immediately see the bridge, pond and swings, and you see this beautiful garden.”

Synergy Spa offers a range of non-surgical services including vitamin infusion therapy, platelet-rich-plasma and stem cell therapy for skin and hair, CoolSculpting fat reduction and more, and Kaler says the facility’s cutting-edge techniques, with the healing garden as a backdrop, make for a client experience not found in other spa centers. “It is more of a medical spa, which makes us unique,” Kaler says. “It’s all about restorative things that don’t require surgery.”

12 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atBRip.com 10 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / APRIL 2018 / atBRip.com

Kaler says those visiting the garden during a treatment visit are exposed to a truly one-ofa-kind experience. “Health is more than just taking pills,” she says. “It is an amalgam of all interrelated experiences. Nutrition, genetics, attitude and nature to name a few. The healing garden is part of that complete picture.” Synergy Spa is located at 836 East 86th Street in Indianapolis. Gourmet Treats business in Broad Ripple in October 2009.

The secret to the success is simple: they make delicious desserts.

Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

“My mother (Patrice Young, who goes by ‘TC,’) was a wedding cake baker and caterer for years and had a dream of having her own bakery one day,” Colvin says. “With both of us having a passion for baking, we decided to open one together. We are a family-owned business. We have no formal training, just a love for baking.”

“We bake everything in-house daily and deliver (our treats) to our Broad Ripple location,” Colvin says. “Our specialties are cupcakes and custom cakes. Once we get settled in (at the Fishers location), we will be hosting different decorating classes for children and adults.”

Well, SweeTies Gourmet Treats Owner Tiffany Colvin says you can. Her Broad Ripple business at 2101 Broad Ripple Avenue, Indianapolis, has been so popular she recently opened a second location in Fishers at 8902 E. 96th Street. Colvin, a Broad Ripple High School graduate, has loved turning her zeal for making high-quality desserts into a way to make a successful living. She loves what she does, so every day is a sweet treat for her. She started the SweeTies

It was a gamble that has paid off handsomely. It has become a fixture in Broad Ripple and has already taken off in Fishers. “We decided to open the Fishers location because we felt there was something missing here in this area, which is Sweets,” Colvin says. 14 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atBRip.com

SweeTies sells custom celebration cakes, wedding cakes, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, cheesecakes, pies and more. Customer favorites at SweeTies include Brown Butter Carmel Cake or cupcakes, Sweet Potato cupcake, Fresh Strawberry Lemonade cupcake, Fresh Strawberry Cheesecake and Sweet Potato Pie.

“I like the Sugar Cream Pie, Brown Butter Carmel Cake, Carrot Cake, Carmel Apple Pie, Bread Pudding and Tres Leche,” Colvin says. “Just to name a few.”

Colvin says SweeTies also has a popular food truck.

Colvin wants SweeTies to be her customer’s one-stop destination for all of their desserts. The shop has a popular daily menu, as well

“Our food truck can be rented for private events,” Colvin says. Colvin adds that SweeTies is always offering special discounts and offers

Recently, through the generous support from United Way of Central Indiana’s Early Learning activities program and the Ruth Lily Philanthropic Fund, Fletcher Place got the opportunity to expand their preschool. The preschool was expanded from two classrooms to four classrooms, which takes the capacity up to 80 kids. Fletcher Place hosted a ribbon cutting on August 30 to celebrate the newly renovated REACH Early Learning Center. “The opening of the REACH Early Learning is an exciting new chapter for Fletcher Place Community Center,” Drew says. “We have quadrupled the classroom space for 3 to 5-yearolds. We also have implemented programming to support the parents while their children are in school with us. The program is a great opportunity to reach families and break the cycle of poverty in our neighborhood.” Drew says what has drawn her to Fletcher Place is the people, and the opportunity to leave a positive impact. “It’s a feeling,” she says. “It’s what community work is all about. It’s helping people and having volunteers who help support the work. It has this awesome feeling about doing the right thing for the right reasons and the right goal. Founder Ronan Marra

Storefront Theatre of Indianapolis Finds Permanent Home in Broad Ripple Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Brian Brosmer

For Ronan Marra, Storefront Theatre of Indianapolis's (STI) new, permanent location in Broad Ripple will be more than just a place to offer live theatrical performances. It's part theater, part art and photography gallery and part rehearsal and educational space, and STI leaders hope it will serve as a new artistic hub for midtown.

In 2017 STI kicked off its inaugural season with two shows at IndyFringe - “Infinity” - written by Hannah Moscovitch, and “Prowess,” penned by Ike Holter. During the kickoff season Marra, STI’s founder and artistic director, began contemplating the idea of a permanent spot from which to operate in Indy and offer seasonal productions. In July, the company secured a 7,500-square-foot space previously occupied by C.T. Peppers nightclub, which sits below the former Crackers comedy club near the corner of College Avenue and 20 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atBRip.com

Broad Ripple Avenue. A 50-seat performance area is only one piece of the puzzle. Marra plans to keep a full-time gallery for photography and other art forms, with moveable panels allowing artists to arrange the space as needed. Guests will come in through the College Avenue entrance and see the gallery area immediately upon passing through a ground-floor lobby and descending the entryway staircase.

“Plenty of theaters have art hanging and galleries and things like that, but we love the idea of people coming down the stairs and then finding themselves automatically immersed in a neat gallery,” Marra says. “We’re as excited about that as we are about the performance space.” The theater itself will feature matching collapsible doors and non-permanent risers, both of which will allow directors to customize the physical configuration of their particular production. “Originally we were going to put some drywall up and have a permanently closed performance space, but we decided there are so many possibilities with leaving it as an open concept for educational classes, acting classes, rehearsals or what have you,” Marra says. “And then with moveable panels and collapsible doors, we can still close different areas off if we want to.” Storefront board members decided to pursue a two-way liquor license, and beer and wine will be sold from a bar that sits near a box office and general information desk. Marra plans to hold two to three shows per season and offer the venue as a rehearsal space for fellow theater companies. “There aren’t a lot of options for rehearsal places here or in a lot of other cities for that matter, so we want to provide that,” Marra says. “And since we’re a non-profit, the goal is to have the place pay for itself by renting it out to different organizations.” Board President Julia Pritchard, who also owns Fortitude Fitness above the Storefront space, is excited STI will be able to host educational classes such as acting lessons. “I have clients who have kids and want to get them into acting classes and have to take them either downtown or up to Carmel,” she says. “And if they want to see a show, those are pretty much the only options too. I think the theater is not only necessary for Broad Ripple’s growth but with all of the new restaurants and things that are going in, all of these businesses 21 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atBRip.com

will feed off of each other.” Before relocating to Indy in 2015 with his wife and son, Marra spent 14 years in Chicago as co-founder and co-artistic director for Signal Ensemble Theatre, where he directed and wrote dozens of productions. He says early on, Signal took off faster than he and his colleagues expected, leaving the group to play perpetual business and administrative catchup. “We were always hamstrung by the administrative side of things because we didn’t plan that part of it out before we started,” Marra recalls. “I always thought to myself that I wanted to reboot and do it right – and Storefront I think is the result of that. Also, I found when I moved here that Indy has a larger theater and arts presence than I was aware of. So those two factors came together.”

22 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atBRip.com

I have a lot of shows in mind that I think would work well here, and we’ll be focused on new work by female and minority playwrights. - Ronan Marra

Marra hopes to open the doors to Storefront Theatre by January and hold his first performances at the venue before spring. He has shows in mind for Storefront’s second season, but is waiting to announce titles until the proper legal rights are secured. “I have a lot of shows in mind that I think would work well here, and we’ll be focused on new work by female and minority playwrights,” he adds. Pritchard feels the timing is ideal in midtown for a fresh, new artistic presence, which she says has shifted to other areas of the city in recent years. “Broad Ripple used to be the place for arts for Indy, and I feel like a lot of that has moved downtown and up into Carmel,” she says. “Broad Ripple really needs, and is craving, a stronger arts presence.” Marra says STI has been welcomed with open arms by the Broad Ripple community since announcing its upcoming presence and looks forward to forging local partnerships and relationships as the company grows. “Everyone around here is great, and we got to know the BRVA (Broad Ripple Village Association) as soon as we announced that we were coming,” he says. “Louie’s Wine Dive already hosted a fundraiser for us. It’s all about community, and we want to put a large focus on that aspect.” Call 317-643-0329 or visit storefrontindy. com for more info on Storefront Theatre of Indianapolis including previous and upcoming show info, a link to join Storefront's mailing list and a donation page. 23 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atBRip.com

Looking for a total body workout that adheres to your schedule, offers guidance not guesswork and helps you continue your path to progress long after the workout is over? Then Orangetheory Fitness may be the perfect fitness solution for you. “We have classes scheduled throughout the day with nationally certified coaches who monitor your progress and make sure you are not over or under training,” says Carolyn McDonald, owner of Orangetheory studios in Carmel, FishersGeist and West Carmel-Zionsville. The newest studio, Fishers-Nickel Plate, is set to open in January 2019 directly across from Fishers City Hall. Shortly after, a Broad Ripple/Butler area studio will open at the intersection of Kessler and College in Indianapolis. Developed by former Pilates instructor, Ellen Latham, Orangetheory is a sciencebased workout that gets results. It is centered on the principle of EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) that suggests if one challenges their body at the correct intensity, they will experience an effect that keeps them burning calories even after the workout is over.

“If you spend 12 or more minutes of the hour-long workout in the ‘Orange Zone,’ which is at 84 percent or more of your maximum heart rate, you will experience the afterburn,” says Katie Douglas, owner of Orangetheory studios in Greenwood and downtown Indianapolis. “You don’t have to work out every day because your body will be burning calories even as it recovers.” With 1,000 locations throughout the US (and seven here in Central Indiana), Orangetheory is designed for all fitness levels and they boast a diverse community of clients with a variety of fitness goals. Staff members and coaches take the time to get to know each member, build a rapport and assure them that they will get the maximum benefit from the Orangetheory workout. McDonald says each member wears a heart rate monitor that tracks their progress in real time throughout the class and gives them (and their coach) insight into their performance. Orangetheory takes the guesswork out of your fitness regimen and creates a reciprocal relationship between you, your coach and other Orangetheory members. Plus, the workout changes every day and that variety keeps members engaged. “The level of community created in each studio is one of my favorite aspects about the Orangetheory program,” McDonald 25 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atBRip.com

says. “The coaches work hard to ensure that every member is comfortable and they are wonderful about offering modifications as needed to ensure everyone feels successful in their workout.” Everyone on staff is trained to offer a welcoming, energetic environment and each location offers a robust schedule of between 60-70 hours of training each week, so Orangetheory is ready whenever you are. “Members schedule classes during the times most convenient for them either in person or with our app,” Douglas says. “In addition, because all Orangetheory memberships are reciprocal, members are welcome to take classes at any studio in the country.” McDonald believes Orangetheory is the future of fitness and she is proud to be part of it. “We have grown so quickly over the past four years here in Central Indiana and our members are constantly building on this incredible TEAM OTF community and culture,” she says. “For local residents, your first class is free, so why not come by and see what we are all about?”

Flatwater Restaurant Founder Mike Yount Talks Eight Years of Success In Broad Ripple Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr

Circumstances were conspiring toward the opening of Broad Ripple’s Flatwater Restaurant long before founder and co-owner Mike Yount purchased the space where the eatery sits on Westfield Boulevard back in 2009. Yount had been working as a manager at Kona Jack’s on North Meridian Street, during which time he realized the restaurant industry was where he wanted to stay in the long-term. Prior to Kona Jack’s, Yount served as a manager at Shaffer’s Restaurant in Glendale where he worked under Greg Shaffer, whom he considers a mentor to this day. “I have a great admiration for Greg and the whole Shaffer family,” says Yount, a North Central grad. “I admired how people would choose to come there to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays or whatever. I wanted to bring that close-knit feeling to wherever I ended up.” Even as he was working his way up the company ladder at Kona Jack’s, from server and bartender to manager, Yount was keeping his eye on commercial properties that became vacant, intent on opening his own establishment whenever the right spot came onto his radar. In the fall of 2009, Yount got word through a business broker that Canal Point Grill, the previous occupant of the current Flatwater space overlooking the Central Canal, would be shutting down. Not long after a walk-through of the space, he decided to take the plunge, and by the spring of 2010 Flatwater was open for business. “I liked that the spot was a little separated from the bars and the party district, and even though it’s only a block away from that stuff it’s a totally different vibe over

Yount seemed to find his stride immediately, staying true to his concept of only fresh, house-made cuisine and live blues and classic rock music several days a week through the spring and summer. By 2013 he’d brought on a partner in Allen Miller, a fellow local who’d joined the Flatwater team as a bartender a few years earlier. “Allen is seven or eight years younger than me and reminded me a lot of myself when he came on,” Yount recalls. “He was working as a full-time manager within a month or so after coming on as a bartender, and he’s now a co-owner with myself.”

The Flatwater menu has evolved a great deal throughout its eight-plus years of existence, and Yount says being one of the first non-Mexican establishments in the area to offer a variety of nachos and tacos — including pulled pork, mahi-mahi and shrimp — helped to distinguish the restaurant from day one. Appetizers including a house-smoked hummus, loaded fries and Korean lettuce wraps, as well as sandwiches like the smoked salmon wrap and the Hoosier pork tenderloin, add variety to the lunch and dinner offerings, and the brunch menu includes a breakfast burrito, Hoosier fried pork and huevos rancheros. “We have a scratch kitchen, and we’re

constantly adding and changing as far as the menu goes,” Yount says. “Our focus in the last three to five years has really been on the house-smoked meats. We have a nice, custom-built smoker out back and we do beef brisket, wings, ribs, rib tips, chicken quarters and pulled pork.” Soon after opening, Yount began bringing in solo and duo acoustic musicians to liven up the open-air, dog-friendly atmosphere during warm months but eventually found that his

bigger-than-expected crowds necessitated a full-band sound. Flatwater currently features cover and original bands Wednesday through Sunday from May to September.

and co-workers and also with musicians, suppliers and local breweries in town,” he says. “My favorite part of the experience, hands-down, has been building those relationships.”

Looking back, Yount says one crucial factor has sustained him through the stresses of Flatwater Restaurant is located at 832 East keeping his establishment afloat — the Westfield Boulevard in Broad Ripple.
