Flying Apache helicopters was not the first job Rob VanArsdall had in mind when he joined the US Army in 2004. He maintained computer networking and automation throughout the battalion and supported the companies below it. felt the impact. He has worked at the hospital as a nurse for 36 years, and despite the gloom in much of the news coverage of the virus and its effects on the country and world, van Osch says the team at Methodist remains in relatively high spirits. “I’d say we’re doing pretty good,” van Osch says. “We’re all banding together. We’ve worked through things before. Maybe not something like this, but every night is a different scenario in the ICU.” Methodist leaders have made daily and weekly preparations as the COVID-19 outbreak has continued to result in an increasing number of patients. The hospital has ensured that nurses and other health care professionals are wearing masks and other personal protective equipment, and van Osch says the hospital has increased janitorial services. He also says nurses and other personnel are taking more extensive cleaning and sanitation measures than is typical for Methodist. “When they clean a room, they’ve stepped up cleaning,” he says. “As nurses, we’ve got towelettes everywhere. The first thing we do on a shift change or when we enter a new room is clean the phones, clean the terminals, clean any flat surface, and any other equipment. So we’ve stepped up our game.”

with them. Despite this, he says most staff members don’t seem to be worried about getting the virus themselves. “I think people are more worried about taking it home to their families than themselves,” he says.
Holcomb issued a stay-at-home order on April 6, designed to limit interactions among Hoosiers in an effort to contain the spread of the virus. These measures are expected to help slow the spread of the infection so hospitals can keep up with the influx of COVID-19 cases. Governor Holcomb commended Hoosiers for doing a good job obeying the measures in a recent statement.
Van Osch and his wife decided it would be best for her to stay in Muncie while the outbreak worsens. He, like many other people on the hospital’s staff, is worried about “I am asking you to take even more potentially taking it home and infecting her. precautions - only make in-person purchases “In case I do get sick, she’s away,” he says. “So when absolutely needed, and use other I’ve been doing the bachelor thing for the last delivery and pickup options when available,” Holcomb said in the statement. “Limit who couple of weeks. Governor Eric
Van Osch’s message to the community is similar. He urges people to follow guidelines, avoid big groups and crowded
areas, and consider wearing masks and gloves if available. He also says people should act sensibly but not expect the situation last forever. “It’s going to end,” he says. “It’s unfortunate, and it’s unfortunate that people are getting as sick as they are, but it will end, and we’ll get through it.” If you have symptoms such as fever, persistent coughing or severe shortness of breath, contact your health care provider as soon as possible.

Parenting During COVID-19 6 Essential Tips For Parents At Home With Kiddos Writer/ Abigail Hake Photography Provided
2. Chalk
Most of us are finding an unlimited amount of time on our hands during these fairly uncertain times. While it can be a stressful time for many of us, especially parents, we will all get through it and have memories to last a lifetime. Let’s hope that these few survival tips can cut down on stress and also bring a few more smiles into your life while we all stay safe at home.
1. Disney+ If you don’t have it, sign up now. It’s super affordable and gives you access to the entire Disney movie library, which you are going to need because the days are very, very long and screen time rules flew out the window weeks ago. Old movies are fun to share with your kids so maybe try to get them to sit down and watch Swiss Family Robinson (a personal fave yet I still can’t get my child to watch the whole thing) or hunker down and watch all the Star Wars one after another or have a Marvel movie marathon.
Time to start hoarding sidewalk chalk. As the weather begins to show more signs of spring, more people will be out walking soon and with limited paths available during this time, why not sass up the walkways with some art. The best thing about chalk though is that it can go so many different directions…get creative! Draw up inspiring messages, create something giant that takes over entire driveways or cul-de-sacs, make up extra-large game boards, or even create art galleries! The possibilities are endless and remember, adults can have fun with chalk too. And, if you have a ton of chalk, share with your neighbors by leaving a piece on their doorstep and ask them to get in on the fun too!
3. Participate in a Challenge There are lots of social media and viral challenges out there and while I’m not a huge tech fan, the social aspect of it has given way to some really creative things happening. Maybe do a lip
7 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atBRip.com
sync challenge video with your entire family, try the garage door challenge (if you are needing a drink and a great laugh), or participate in the plank or push up challenge. You can even come up with your own challenge if you are really feeling creative! Whatever you choose, make sure to nominate another family to try it after you do!
4. One-on-One Time. With us all having quite a few extra moments hanging at our homes these days, we are typically all up in each other’s business. But now is the time to make sure to carve out a little one-on-one time with your loved ones if you can. About 15 minutes here and there can go a long way. Spend it snuggling in the morning before rolling out of bed if you have early risers, playing a video game, or going on a walk. It’s also important to keep in mind that as adults you might need to find some alone time too. It feels like there are really no breaks during this crazy time, so no judgment if that is time spent hiding in the bathroom.
5. Talent Shows We all have hidden talents, like knowing the entire rap portion of TLC’s Waterfalls song or spinning a basketball on our finger for

way longer than normal. Whatever your hidden talent, it’s time to let that cat out of the bag and show off your skills! Gather your immediate family and each share your talents one by one in the living room or make it a family challenge and invite other families and friends to participate in a virtual event! By utilizing the amazing social tools out there like FaceTime or Zoom, the possibilities are endless!
you’ve been meaning to make. Whatever you do, make sure to check in on friends and family, especially those who are stuck home during this time alone. Some of you were maybe meant for these moments, but for others, this is a real challenge. Thankfully, we are able to still stay connected with technology. Whatever you do to get through this time staying safe at home, cherish it. Remember this too shall pass.
6. Wine Delivery You are gonna need it. Pick a local winery and you will probably be happily surprised to find out they are delivering during this time! While I don’t encourage drinking in excess, the days can be really quite emotionally draining and a cocktail hour once a week (or every day - you choose) isn’t going to hurt anyone! There are also quite a few Mexican restaurants selling their non-alcoholic margarita mix on their takeout menus now too. Who doesn’t need a Margarita Monday (or Tuesday & Wednesday too)? It’s ok, we get it. After this, we’ll all be drinking Ina Garten style, and if you don’t know what this is referring to, Google it. Remember, this is a special time we’ve been given to slow down and reconnect. Make sure to take it all in. Stay in bed a little longer, try to read that book you’ve been meaning to finish or try a new recipe

Transitioning from what was essentially an information technology (IT) department to becoming an aviator was an involved process, but kept him stateside for a while. Upon completion of his deployment to Iraq, VanArsdall and his family moved from Fort Durham, New York, to Alabama. VanArsdall attended Warrant Officer Candidate School at Fort Rucker - often referred to as Mother Rucker. He graduated approximately a year and a half later. The next leg of the VanArsdall family adventures took them to South Korea for three years. “It was quite the whirlwind,” says VanArsdall, who was deployed to Iraq a mere two months after enlisting. “My wife Chrystal has been incredible along this journey.” While in Korea, the VanArsdall family took advantage of their location and went to Hong Kong Disneyland and Guam for vacations. They also visited various locations around South Korea, including an indoor theme park and the beaches of Busan. While in South Korea, VanArsdall spent much of his time in Apache helicopter training with the Republic of Korea Army, also known as ROK. VanArsdall and his copilot served as escorts, mainly to Black Hawk helicopters, in addition to joint training with the US Air Force and ROK. After the deployment to Korea, the VanArsdall family moved to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, which was their final military destination. It was then time to move back home to Indianapolis, and VanArsdall and Chrystal weighed their options. “Even though I had over one thousand flight hours, a lot of aviation companies want at least twenty-five hundred,” VanArsdall says. “I had extensive IT experiences, so I looked around and was happy with an offer from Defenders.”

Chrystal also works at Defenders, which is a home security company. Initially, the couple both worked as sales agents, competing with one another for top rankings in the company. Chrystal still works in the sales department, while VanArsdall moved to the IT department.
“Defenders believes that businesses don’t grow, people do - which creates a positive, encouraging place to work,” says VanArsdall, who expanded his skill set and enrolled in Eleven Fifty Academy, where he instructs on a part-time basis after his Defenders work hours. “I am now a developer working with JavaScript and C++, and I was able to use my GI Bill benefits at Eleven Fifty."
The decision to join the Army out of college was due to VanArsdall’s family, who has deep ties to the military. VanArsdall’s younger sister Michelle joined the Air Force National Guard prior to his Army enlistment. His grandfather and uncle were in the Navy, and his father worked at Naval Avionics in Indianapolis as a civilian engineer.

Rob VanArsdall with his kids and wife Chrystal.
“My cousin was a big influence on my enlisting,” says VanArsdall, who served for twelve years. “At the time of enlistment, several things were going on in my life at once. We welcomed our firstborn, Caleb, into the world. I had almost $50,000 in student loan debt. The Army was offering student loan repayment, a guaranteed job and health care. The decision to enlist was rather easy and I wouldn’t have had the experience I had without a very supportive wife and family.” VanArsdall is grateful for his experience flying an AH-64 Apache helicopter, and for the friendships he made during his time serving. He is also thankful for what the Army has given him both personally and professionally. “We had a sign hanging on our wall that said, ‘Home is where the Army sends us’, with a list of bases where we were stationed,” VanArsdall says. “Every time we moved, it was like a new chapter in our book - a new opportunity that the Army gave us.”

HOTEL TANGO TURNS THE FOX HOLE INTO A HAND SANITIZER PRODUCTION FACILITY Writer / Kara Kavensky Photography Provided by Addison Ray, Visit Indy & Hotel Tango
Hotel Tango was the first artisan distillery in Indianapolis, with its initial location in Fletcher Place along Virginia Avenue. It’s also the first craft distillery that is
service-disabled veteran-owned in the United States and they have several employees with military experience. Their tasting rooms are the cornerstone of their business. At a team meeting in mid-March to discuss how their company could help 14 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atBRip.com
with the COVID-19 pandemic, someone suggested that they explore making hand sanitizer. Due to their normal production of spirits, Hotel Tango had all of the ingredients on hand and by the end of that day, they had created their first batch of hand sanitizer. Regulations require that the hand sanitizer production be in a separate facility. Fortunately, there was space in their adjacent catering facility, The Fox Hole. The Fox Hole’s 4,000 square feet was quickly transformed into a production area for hand sanitizer. By the end of their first week of sanitation production, Hotel Tango had shipped out 2,000 bottles, which were donated to Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation (HVAF) and Wheeler Mission.
“Once we started production of hand sanitizer, our idle employees from our tasting rooms shifted to the production line and we, fortunately, have not furloughed anyone thanks to this additional product line,” says Hotel Tango cofounder Travis Barnes. Their spirits production has not slowed down, although their onpremise business fell off. Hotel Tango has seen an increase in their chain and grocery store distribution. “Fast and furious” is how Hotel Tango COO/CFO Mike Leary describes the assembly line for bottling the hand sanitizer. The recipe for Hotel Tango’s hand sanitizer includes neutral grain (80%) alcohol, xanthan gum, peroxide and citronella as a

The sanitizer production crew increases its efficiency almost daily. The team fills bottles, buckets and coolers with the sanitizer. At first, bottles were filled by dipping them into buckets of hand sanitizer. Subsequent processes have become more streamlined, including welding an industrial mixer to help produce higher quantities. Depending upon the size of bottles and containers to be filled, the volume of hand sanitizer produced can be as much as three hundred gallons in one day. Hotel Tango has not experienced any disruption to its supply chain for receiving bottles and labeling, which enables an uninterrupted production flow. Orders are coming in from around the country and also from grocery store chains and the local office of the United States Postal Service. In addition to their sales of hand sanitizer, Hotel Tango is donating as much as they can to anyone who has requested products. Initial shipments were sent to a National Guard unit stationed in Saudi Arabia, the USS Indianapolis, the USS Indiana, local EMS, fire and police departments, as well as IU Health offices. Any police or fire department personnel who drive up to Hotel Tango are given free bottles of hand sanitizer. For more information, visit hoteltangowhiskey.com.
GiGi’s Playhouse Offers Free GiGi’s-AtHome Service During COVID-19 Outbreak Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided by GiGi’s Playhouse
It is said that there is a silver lining to every cloud. Denisse Jensen, Executive Director of GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Center, has found a way to benefit many families amidst COVID-19 shutdowns. Days after the Indianapolis facility, located at 5909 East 86th Street, closed it doors, Jensen and volunteers converted in-person programming into Gigi’s-AtHome. Now, lesson plans, videos and student handouts plus realtime activities are available via the internet. Gigi’s Playhouse is a nonprofit organization that has 48 locations across the United States and one in Mexico. The Indianapolis site opened in 2015. Today, it serves more than 500 families in Central Indiana as well as some families who travel from Ohio. Its educational and therapeutic programs for both children and adults with Down Syndrome, are completely free and are funded entirely through grants, corporation partnerships and donations.
“The founder, Nancy Gianni, started the first GiGi’s Playhouse in 2003,” Jensen says. “She named it after her daughter, GiGi, who was born with Down Syndrome. After she was turned away from joining playgroups, Gianni realized that there needed to be a place for families like them.” “Everybody desires to have a place where kids are inspired to be their best self. GiGi’s is a place that fosters inclusion and acceptance. We embrace the whole family and offer support all the way from a pre-birth diagnosis through adulthood. We feel that limits can’t be put on someone just because of a diagnosis.” In Indianapolis, GiGi’s Playhouse has a staff of two full-time employees plus one who works part-time. Programing is conducted by dedicated volunteers. When it halted its inperson educational sessions in order to comply with COVID-19 mandates, Jensen had to act quickly. She and volunteers converted many programs to accessible online formats and assembled bags full
17 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atBRip.com
of supplies and lesson plans. “Families who enrolled in Spring Session Two drove by and picked up the bags,” Jensen says. "Families not enrolled can access the program information on our website, using their own supplies. The response has been so great that other GiGi’s locations throughout the nation started using our online model. We have had thousands of views and have gained hundreds of new families. Now, families in locations without a GiGi’s Playhouse can connect with us.”
The development of free online content has removed barriers for participation since it can be accessed whether a family lives in a rural setting or inside a city. “When we made the Gigi-At-Home bags, it depleted our supplies, but what good would they have done just sitting there not being used? That’s why our August 29 fundraiser, 3.21 Run in Noblesville’s Forest Park will be critical this year,” Jensen says. "It’s a fun afternoon for family and friends but it is the fundraiser that pays for all our program expenses. “GiGi’s at home is keeping our families purposeful during this difficult time. I’m so proud that we can continue being a part of
their lives,” she adds. GiGi’s Playhouse is located at 5909 East 86th Street. Call 317-2888235 or visit gigisplayhouse.org/indianapolis for more information. For information about 3.21 Run visit gigisplayhouse.org/ Indianapolis/3-21-race.

Show Mom How Much You Appreciate Her This Mother’s Day Mother’s Day will soon be upon us, and it’s time to start thinking about how to make your mom feel special on her day. Most moms in our lives deserve an award for all the amazing things they do, from cooking dinners to catching tears and giving the best hugs - but if you don’t have the time or money to erect a statue or create an award just for her, we’ve got your back with these easy and unique ways to show your appreciation. Bouquets
Ok, we know a floral bouquet is not so unique, but if you take this basic idea and run with it, there are many possibilities. Find something she loves or something that makes her smile, and pull it together in bouquet form. Maybe it’s cookies, balloons or even candy. Try something a little outside of the box by creating a vintage brooch bouquet and placing it in a handmade vase that she can look at all the time (both available on Etsy. com). Some of these ideas you can find at retailers around town, and others you might have to create on your own. Either way, any unique take on a normal bouquet is sure to bring an ear-to-ear grin.
Handwritten Letters
When was the last time you wrote your mom a handwritten letter? Maybe second grade? Well, the time has come to consider doing this again. Not only will

she love hearing about all the things that are important to you that involve her, but this is also a surefire way to get an almost endless hug from her.
Donations
Chat your mom up a little to figure out which cause might be the best fit for a donation in her name. Was she a successful businesswoman? If so, Dress for Success might be a good fit. Was she a teacher? Consider Girls Inc. Wherever you donate in her name, it’s sure to touch her heart.
Get-Togethers
As we grow older, getting together with family gets harder. Many moms enjoy having the entire family around the dinner table, in the living room or on the back porch. Try to schedule a family brunch or lunch. If your family members are scattered across the country, schedule a time to gather on FaceTime for a bit to catch up with your mom, and laugh like families do when they are together.
Picture Books
nods to the past really takes this to the next level.
It’s very easy these days to pull photos from social media and create magical photo memories. Shutterfly, Chatbooks and even Walgreens have easy-to-use platforms. The best part is that these last forever. Not only will your mom love looking at the photos while awaiting your next visit, but it will also allow her to relive meaningful moments over and over. Don’t be afraid to add in photos of drawings your kids made, or maybe something you made as a kid. Sprinkling in
Do Something Crazy
No, this doesn’t mean do something that will get you in trouble. Simply do something with your mom that’s perhaps outside of your comfort zone, and just plain fun. Sign up for a fun 5K race - there are tons of 5K opportunities out there, and you can choose to walk or run in many of them. You might also try a city scavenger hunt or go geocaching. It might even be fun to rent

your mom’s dream car and go on a road trip. Whatever crazy, fun activity you choose, make those memories and remind your mom that you love her very much. Remember to get started on your ideas with enough time to make the next Mother’s Day a memorable one. Our mothers sacrifice many things for us so that we can grow and prosper, so take the time to make them feel special. Remember that mothers are a blessing, and deserve to be showered with amazing love all year long.

I AM MORE
than my migraines. I am Kelly. As the mom of a toddler, I don’t have time for migraines. Thankfully, my doctor saw through my symptoms and treated one of the root causes: my allergies. At Eskenazi Health Primary Care, doctors from IU School of Medicine work with some of the best nurses in Central Indiana. They don’t just see me as a patient. They see me.
