JB. Rogers with "Green Book" Director Peter Farrelly
“Green Book” Co-Producer J.B. Rogers Talks Academy Awards & Calling Broad Ripple Home Writer / Pat Carlini Photography Provided
It’s been said that every good story has a Hoosier connection. That seems to be the case as well with this year’s Academy Award-winning film “Green Book” who’s assistant director and co-producer is long-time Broad Ripple resident, J.B. Rogers. The Park Tudor Alum worked with Peter Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga and Brian Hayes Currie on the movie, a true story about an African American pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and Italian-American driver Frank “Tony Lip” Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen) who accompanied Shirley on a concert tour of the American South in the 1960s. Green Book became a surprise Oscar contender last fall after winning the audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie then won a Golden Globe Award for Best
Screenplay. Green Book was then up for five Oscars and won three — Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Ali and Best Original Screenplay. Rogers was in town recently in between production schedules and had a moment for coffee at his wife’s popular hot spot — The Cake Bake Shop in Broad Ripple. “She’s done a great job,” he says of his wife. “I knew it would go well, but, this has exploded into something great. She is way more famous than me.” Rogers had planned to go to law school but never left California and his love for movies. That was in the 80s. It was there he saw a sign saying that read “intern needed for New World Pictures” and he was excited to apply. He got the internship and eventually got to work on movies such as The Burbs (1989), with Tom Hanks. He recalls a funny conversation with the actor when he thinks back about getting his start in movie production. “Tom Hanks said to me, hey can you get me a grape soda,” recalls Rogers with a chuckle. “When I handed it to him, he said, aren’t you happy you went to college?” I laugh about it now but I knew then that I wanted to do even

more with movies. Eventually, he was able to help direct movies, write some scripts and even do a little acting. “It was actually the best school I could’ve ever had,” Rogers says. It was also in the 80s when Rogers met Gwendolyn on a movie set in California where Gwendolyn — whose dream was initially to work in film casting — was working as a male modeling agent. The two started dating in 1989 and they were married in 1995. The couple moved to Sun Valley, Idaho where Rogers went on to do a lot of movie work with Peter and Bobby Farrelly and eventually got to work as assistant director on hits such as There’s Something about Mary (1998) and American Pie (1999). The couple had three boys before deciding to return to Indiana and once again head to Broad Ripple and send the kids to Park Tudor.

Rogers with his family.
The boys (the fourth generation to attend Park Tudor) 22 –year-old Baxter, who hopes to be a theme park designer, 19- year-old Weston, who wants to study aviation at Purdue and 16 -year- old Drake. The couples’ Hollywood connections remained strong over the years and when Rogers worked as producer and assistant director for the “Dumb and Dumber” sequel, “Dumb and Dumber To” filmmakers Peter and Bobby – invited Gwendolyn to makes cupcakes for several scenes in the movie. In the first scene — a dream sequence — Lloyd Christmas ( Jim Carrey) grabs some cupcakes from a platter and after taking a few bites, flings them across the room in a ninja fight scene. Rogers has worked on “My All-American” 2015 and “Hall Pass” in 2011 as well. Rogers latest work is with “Loudermilk” which stars Ron Livingston of Sex in the City and Office Space. When Rogers is home for a few days at a time, he tries to help out with the Cake Bake Shop and spend time with his family. They still enjoy all that Broad Ripple has to offer. Then, it is time for him to hit the road for work again. “There’s just not many movies being made here in Indiana,” Rogers says with a grin. “ But maybe someday!”
Rogers with actor Viggo Mortensen.

ollywood has an energy of “lights, camera action” that any fantasize about at some point in life. For Forba Shepherd, she had the chance to live out that fantasy. Shepherd, a part-time visual merchandising representative for Lindt Chocolate USA, has enjoyed acting ever since she was young. “I was the kid who would do anything for a laugh,” she says. Represented by a local talent agency, Shepherd is contacted whenever there is a role they think would suit her. On a Friday evening in January 2018, Shepherd received an intriguing call from her agent. “I want you to read for role of Louise Bundy—Ted Bundy’s mom,” her agent said. Bundy was a notorious serial killer who murdered at least two dozen women in the mid-70s. Like many psychopaths, he was charismatic, and his good looks helped lure women to him. In this Netflix film titled Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil and Vile, Bundy is portrayed by Zac Efron. Other cast members include John Malkovich, Lily Collins, and Jim Parsons. “You need to be in Cincinnati tomorrow at 10 a.m. for the audition,” Shepherd was told. “There was a snowstorm happening
12 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2019 / atBRip.com
and I needed to get my head shot and resume together, plus figure out what I was going to wear the next day. No nerves whatsoever!” Shepherd says with a chuckle. But with nerves comes excitement and off she went for the audition of a lifetime. After the casting call, the choice came down to her and one other actress. She went into a room with the director and writer and read the script several different ways. “I made the director laugh a few times so that felt good,” Shepherd says, who got a call 40 minutes into her drive home from the audition, letting her know she had landed the part. Shepherd burst into happy tears. The movie was shot in Covington, Kentucky, and Shepherd was on set for about five days working with Efron and Malkovich. “Zac was perfect as Ted Bundy,” Shepherd says. “He turned on that intensity really well!” When she shot her courtroom scene, it was 2 a.m. in the morning and everyone was exhausted. Malkovich, whom she calls a “great asset to the film,” offered her a few suggestions for line delivery and complimented her on doing a nice job in her role. Though this was one of the most exciting acting jobs she’s scored, she did stay plenty busy in her craft during the seven years she lived in New York City. It was something she had dreamed of doing for years, though she didn’t work up the nerve to go for it until 2001 when she was 45 years old. 13 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2019 / atBRip.com
Uprooting to the Big Apple when she didn’t know a soul was intimidating yet exhilarating. She booked roles in plays and commercials and was an extra on the set of Sex & the City. She also was cast as an extra in several major motion pictures, such as A Beautiful Mind and The Good Shepherd.
"I love playing different characters and being in a community of actors. I love the process of telling a story." -Forba Shepherd
Like most actors, Shepherd worked a day job to make ends meet. That equated to long days. “I’d leave my apartment at 7 a.m. and not get home until nearly midnight,” Shepherd says. When the recession hit, she struggled to find steady work, so she moved back to Broad Ripple in 2008 and began acting locally in commercials, industrial films, and medical films. Though she has no plans to move to L.A or back to New York, she acknowledges that one never knows what’s going to happen in life. Her only certainty is that acting is her passion. “It’s my religion. It’s who I am,” Shepherd says. “I love playing different characters and being in a community of actors. I love the process of telling a story.” Shepherd recently finished the independent film called No Place, as well as the play Dear Mavis for DivaFest, which is a celebration of women playwrights. In August, she’ll take part in the IndyFringe show. In the fall, she’ll be in a production of Not Dead Yet playing the best friend of an aging Hollywood starlet. Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil and Vile is streaming on Netflix now. Follow Forba on Instagram @forbashepherd

project,” recalls Eddie, who studied food service management before diving into the family business and becoming owner and manager at Sahm’s Place on 65th Street in 2009. “One of the things that Ed and I like to do is look at what a specific community might be missing and try to hone in on creating affordable community gathering spaces.” It’s a casual affair at Half Liter, where patrons of all ages can station themselves at picnic tables in the 200-seat, family-and pet-friendly outdoor patio or inside at the bar and order food and drinks from the bar. When it came down to deciding on menu specifics, the Sahms gravitated toward the
Texas-style smokehouse concept, and Ellis, collard greens, mac and cheese and potato who previously worked at Tinker Street and salad before finishing things off with the Black Market, stays busy cooking up brisket, chocolate oatmeal cream pie. pork and chicken at his smoker station. Walk the Talk Indy-Based Speaker Series Encourages Well-Being, Positive Thinking & Spirituality

Since 2016, Steve Ross has been organizing a type of show markedly different than the many musical shows he helped organize as owner of The Vogue for several decades.
think so they think more positively and realize there are ways to overcome problems in life and be a better person.”
Each Walk the Talk speaking event features six individuals who present a 10-minute story to the audience, related to a particular show’s theme. Ross typically chooses the Six years ago, Ross felt compelled to start topic for a given event several months organizing a speaker series somewhat beforehand and invites between 20 and similar to TED Talks, only instead of 30 potential speakers to audition for the focusing on technology, education and six spots. Past show themes have included design, he wanted each event centered on Enlightenment, Mindfulness and Manifest: well being, positive thinking and spirituality. Anything is Possible. “I really wanted to start offering something that lifted people up,” says Ross, who became a co-owner of The Vogue back in 1986 and sole owner from 2000 until April of this year. “Our slogan is Creating an Epic Shift, which means to change how people
“When we audition people, we look for people that have passion, with a story and a message that’s real and that the audience will want to hear,” says Ross, who has teamed with inspirational speaker Richard Brendan to make Walk the Talk a reality. 22 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2019 / atBRip.com
“We’ve been able to pick six different approaches to our topic each time, which is cool. So you have six people with their own approach to the same topic.” The first event was held in June 2016, and Ross and Brendan soon discovered there are plenty of Indy locals with uplifting stories to tell. “At first we thought about bringing in big speakers like Deepak Chopra, but we realized those people charge more than we wanted to spend for an hour talk,” Ross says. “And even a TED Talk speaker for 10-15 minutes is $10,000 or $15,000. We researched and found there are speaker groups and great people around Indianapolis.” Each event also includes live music and

“Inside the balloons is a motivational phrase based on the night’s topic, kind of like a fortune cookie,” Ross says. “People can pop them right there or take them home and do it. The little kids in the audience go crazy for that. It’s a fun twist to the night.”
Each speaking event is also filmed and posted to the Walk the Talk YouTube channel, and the videos have accumulated more than 100,000 views so far.
Ross recalls many poignant moments during the events he’s put on, and one speaker that sticks out in his mind is Lauren Lane Powell, who spoke on the topic of overcoming fear at an event in Bloomington two years ago while battling ovarian cancer at the time. “Her message was so strong, and she was the most positive, loving woman I could ever imagine, especially considering what
Ross and Brendan kicked off the series at The Vogue in 2016, and after getting requests from parents wanting to bring their kids to attend, they held shows at Indy’s Athenaeum, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in Bloomington and the Brown County Playhouse. This September’s event, which will be the 17th and the theme for which is Unconditional Love, will be held at the Indiana Historical Society’s Frank and Katrina Basile Theater. Audiences have grown with each show, with

attendees coming from Ohio and Kentucky as well as Marion and surrounding counties. While they’re considering eventually taking the Walk the Talk series on tour, Ross and Brendan are content for now to attract crowds to Central Indiana and host one-off shows. “We’ve enjoyed starting out in Indianapolis and Bloomington, and we’ll see where it goes from here,” Ross says. “The main goal with this is to help people be better, and if people can take something away from one of the stories they hear to improve their wellbeing, that’s what we’re doing it for.” For more information including an upcoming events page and audition details, visit walkthetalkseries.com.
