hile Klipsch Audio Technologies may be a global audio juggernaut, the leaders of the Indianapolis-based brand make a point to stay involved in the community they call home. Considering its history of arts and entertainment, the Broad Ripple neighborhood in particular holds a special place in the company’s heart. “We’re a local company, but I think that most of the people that work in Indianapolis are really loyal at trying to find ways to support the local community,” says Klipsch President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Jacobs. “Most of us have lived in Broad Ripple at some point in time, including me, and we just find Broad Ripple to be such an essential part of making sure that the art and music scenes in this city stay vibrant.” Founded in 1946 by audio pioneer Paul W. Klipsch, the company celebrates its 75th anniversary this year with a run of anniversary products, promotions and live events. In addition to a 75th anniversary Klipschorn speaker, Klipsch will also unveil a 75th anniversary Jubilee speaker as well as a coffee-table book detailing the company’s entire 75-year history.

Experience the Jazz Kitchen

Originally based out of Hope, Arkansas, Klipsch moved to Indianapolis after Paul W. Klipsch sold the company to second cousin and Indy businessman Fred S. Klipsch and his wife Judy in 1989. “[Paul] didn’t have any heirs that were interested in the business, and Fred had offered to either buy from him, help him take it public or help him sell the company,” Jacobs says. “He wanted to keep it in the family.” As the company began to establish its local roots, Fred S. Klipsch eventually hired Paul Jacobs, who saw something special in the company. “Fred was looking for some people that could see the vision of Klipsch,” Jacobs says. “I saw the opportunity and joined, and I was at the very lowest rungs of the company but I loved the brand, loved what they stood for and loved the people. Now, all of a sudden, 30 years have gone by. It’s hard for me to even imagine that.”

In his more than 30 years with the company, Jacobs says Klipsch has always stuck to its original identity established by Paul W. Klipsch, ultimately helping them to garner the world-class reputation they now have. “We’ve always stood tall on Paul’s design principles - controlled polar response, wide dynamic range, flat frequency response,” Jacobs says. “We’ve always stuck with those things, and I think that we became a trusted business partner of a lot of people around the world because we were predictable. We stood for one thing, and we did it better than anyone else in the world. We brought a lot of exciting new ideas, concepts and products to the market, but we never deviated from who we were.”

that’s not live, and it can sound good. But when it sounds really good, that can stir you emotionally. That’s what Paul was after - recreating the live music experience.” Since moving to Indianapolis, Klipsch has grown into the global brand that it is today. Jacobs says the company has offices in several countries around the world, including Australia, China, France and the Netherlands.

Since the beginning, Klipsch has also stood by its intention of making every listening experience an excellent one. Specifically, the company aims to bring the live music experience into customers’ homes.

“We were only a U.S.-based company when I started,” Jacobs says. “There was virtually no distribution outside of the U.S. Now, we sell in about 70 countries around the world and are the largest speaker brand in the world.”

“Live music stirs you emotionally,” Jacobs says. “There’s a lot of music you can listen to

As it has grown into a global leader in sound, however, Klipsch has still maintained the same level of quality in its products. “One of the things we haven’t changed is what Paul’s original design criteria was for our products, as well as what the original objective is,” Jacobs says. “Wherever we participate, we want to be the best-in-class product, and we don’t necessarily want to become a common, household name. We like the idea of having a little bit of mystique to us.”

company is perfect, but I think we have a lot of great people. Transparency and honesty are some of our driving forces.” Considering how passionate Klipsch employees are about their work, it’s no wonder why the company has such a presence in Indianapolis and beyond. “While we run a global company, the heartbeat of the global company comes from here,” Jacobs says. “We’ve always been about music. You can say music, movies and gaming, and that’s all fine and true, but for most of us, you find people getting really passionate about music.”

In addition to music, Klipsch employees are also passionate about giving back to their Indianapolis community. Through the course of the pandemic, for example, Jacobs says the company did a variety of fundraising events benefiting frontline workers, artist “The company was based on horn-loaded loud associations, local music venues and more. speakers, and to this day everything we build is a horn-loaded loud speaker,” Jacobs continues. While Klipsch may bring auditory joy to customers around the world, the company “While we’ve expanded our audience and leaders and staff always make sure their local expanded the product portfolio, what we Indianapolis community is taken care of as haven’t changed is fundamentally what Paul well. based the company on, in how we want to reach the audience through stirring their “For all the people that work here, knowing emotions.” that we create this outreach and do these things is a big deal,” Jacobs says. “They want to While ensuring a quality product, Klipsch work at a company they feel believes in giving has also made sure to offer a great customer back and helping in the local community.” experience, thanks to its dedicated staff. “I think that we’ve been pretty good about having really good people work for us and establishing a good culture,” Jacobs says. “No 6 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / JULY 2021 / BroadRippleMag.com

Mark Williams

Indianapolis Art Center Celebrates 25 Years at Current Broad Ripple Location Writer / Molly Dykstra Photographer / Michael Durr

When Mark Williams took his first class at the Indianapolis Art League, he did not realize he was starting a path that would lead him to become its president and executive director in 2020. Since that first class, however, Williams did realize that the Art League (renamed the Indianapolis Art Center in 1996) offers unique opportunities for both amateur and professional artists. “We meet people where they are with art,” he says. “We are here for everyone without pretense - without preconceptions or anything else.” His personal mission for the Art Center, to revitalize and reactivate its founding ideology, couldn’t have come at a better time. Starting his position during the pandemic meant there were many challenges to overcome. “We were born during the Great Depression,” Williams says. “Resilience is in our DNA. COVID’s got nothing. It has given us an opportunity to look at things anew.” He is, of course, referring to the original founding of the Indianapolis Art League in 1934 by Herron graduate William Kaeser. Using funding from the Works Progress Administration started by Franklin D. Roosevelt, he modeled the small nonprofit after a similar student organization in New York. The League faced many early challenges, from the gasoline shortages during World War

II to the loss of its original facility at Holliday Park due to a fire in 1958. Yet each difficulty only made the Indianapolis Art League emerge stronger, and more determined to survive and eventually thrive. The League incorporated as a foundation in 1960 and built a facility at 3103 North Pennsylvania Street, where they remained until 1976. Its history joined Broad Ripple’s that year when it relocated to the village. The original building the leaders constructed was just over 10,000 square feet. Throughout the next two decades it continued to attract more students and staff, rapidly becoming a pillar of the community. After outgrowing its space, the Art League began construction on a new building in 1994. It also changed its name to the Indianapolis Art Center. Completed in 1996, the new structure remains its home today. Designed by Indiana architect Michael Graves, it is 40,000 square feet, housing 13 dedicated art studios, three galleries, a library and a 225-seat auditorium. In 2005, ARTSPARK officially opened. This 9.5-acre sculptural garden houses events, performances, classes and exhibitions in addition to providing the community with a beautiful outdoor area to explore and enjoy. While it has continued to grow, admission to all of its facilities remains free.

“We will remain open, free and accessible to all, all the time” Williams says. “We are not going to put up barriers.” Activating the community and removing barriers is an important facet of the mission the Indianapolis Art Center has taken on. During the pandemic, for example, it offered take-home art kits. Created for both adults and children, these kits include high-quality materials to help families pursue art at home or allow children to explore art independently if parents are stuck on Zoom calls. This program has expanded to become The Big Give Show!, a telethon-style event that will occur on September 17, with party kits available so people can participate in activities during the show. Registration for this event is free. The new “Make it, Take it” classes are also extremely popular. These two-hour experiences allow a student to create a piece of art (in more 2D and 3D mediums than you can imagine) and try out techniques without a commitment or high price tag. Many other class leaders have shortened schedules, removing the pressure of a long-term commitment of time and financial resources. As a result of innovations like these, the demand for classes has exploded, with record numbers of new enrollments. Outreach programs also continue to expand. In addition, the new renovations of ARTSPARK mean that more outdoor performances and events are on the way this summer. As always, it remains open and free for the community to enjoy.

A major milestone in the history of the Indianapolis Art Center is also happening this summer. Leaders and staff will celebrate the current location’s 25th birthday. The Artsparkle Silver Jubilee is a benefit bash that will commemorate this achievement on August 25, 2021. Tickets for this event will go on sale on July 5. Early reservations are encouraged, because it promises to sell out fast. This summer will also mark the one-year anniversary of the exhibition titled “Eighteen: Black Lives Matter.” The facility will host a second exhibition this August to explore the impact last summer’s events had on the 18 artists who painted the street mural, and other works in downtown Indianapolis. Williams says he wants the Art Center to “host that community conversation of where we are one year later. Are we different? Did we do anything or did we just talk about it?” New programs like Locally Made and the Art Center Marketplace also help with the evolution of the Broad Ripple community. They allow the Indianapolis Art Center to facilitate connections between buyers and local artists, encouraging makers with limited marketing experience to be seen and make money. “With an innovative mindset and a mantra to build community through art in all its many forms, everything is possible,” Williams says. The Indianapolis Art Center is located at 820 East 67th Street in Indianapolis. For more info, call 317-255-2464 or go to indplsartcenter.org.

During his first semester at Purdue University, Trevor Mahlmann borrowed a camera from a friend to take some shots at an informal, behind-the-scenes NASA social event. He’d never pursued photography seriously prior to that loan, but after a few sessions with that borrowed camera, he was inspired to pursue a career that has taken him around the country to take shots of aircraft and rocket launches, as well as campus graduation photos in the spring and late fall. “I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do while I was in school,” Mahlmann, a Valparaiso native, says. “I started pursuing the launch photography, which took me through Indy

a lot of the time, being at Purdue. After that NASA Social - they used to be called NASA Tweetups - I kind of got hooked from there, and I started traveling to photograph launches whenever I could. I reached a crossroads during school and took the photography track.” During his two years attending Purdue, Mahlmann also found himself all over the Hoosier state photographing campuses, cityscapes, and events like the Indy 500. In June of 2020 Mahlmann made a full-time move to Cape Canaveral, Florida, and these days his primary photography gig is shooting for arstechnica.com, alongside a reporter, covering rocket launches by companies like SpaceX and Northrop Grumman. He also continues to do graduation photos here in Indiana.

Your full-frame mirrorless journey starts here!

“I’ve kind of married all of these different things I’ve found myself photographing, and made a career out of it,” Mahlmann says. “I come up in May for the spring graduations, and last year for the first time I started doing fall scenes for people who want pictures on campus when it’s a bit prettier before their winter graduation. I try to use the seasons to my advantage, so I do those kinds of shots in all the seasons now.” Mahlmann adds that one of the biggest challenges that come with working as a photographer of rocket launches and other type of aircraft is rolling with the many schedule changes and delays that often arise in the industry. “The schedules often move mostly to the right, and sometimes by weeks and often by days, so you have to have a dedication and be flexible if you’re going to stay with it,” he says, adding that he plans to attend and shoot a SpaceX prototype test launch scheduled for later this year in Texas. “Until the rocket lifts off and leaves the ground, it could happen the next day or the following week, or not at all - there’s just so much technicality from weather to technical readiness to all the logistics. Marrying all the logistics together to be able to be present, let alone coming up with a cool idea to capture it, is tough, but I like doing it.” For more information on Trevor Mahlmann’s photography including a portfolio page and a shop, visit him online at tmahlmann.com.

Have you been on the hunt for classic American eats? One Trick Pony, located inside the Sun King location in Broad Ripple, is just for you. Located just east of the Monon Trail on Broad Ripple Avenue, One Trick Pony provides a fast, affordable, family-friendly space to enjoy classic burgers and delicious beer. Neal Brown started One Trick Pony at the Fishers Test Kitchen last year, and has since then created a strong relationship with Sun King Brewing. When the kitchen opened at Sun King’s newest location in Broad Ripple, Brown sought out a partnership to deepen that relationship. It was a great alignment for both companies, both of which have a family-friendly perspective. One Trick Pony offers a new experience for customers, providing a full dining service at the Sun King facility.

“We work as an integrated team, and the partnership could not be more perfect,” Brown says. You’ll find classic burgers, fries and onion rings, and the eatery also offers brunch. The Brunch Tray is only available on Saturday and Sunday for dine-in, and is a well-kept secret for local customers. “It’s a tongue-in-cheek continental breakfast,” Brown says of the Brunch Tray, which includes items like banana pudding, donuts glazed in Sun King porter topped with Smoking Goose bacon, and cereal. As a devoted dad, opening a restaurant with a family-friendly menu came easy for Brown, especially with the advice of his 14-year-old son Greyson. “He loves burgers,” Brown says, adding

that Greyson is the official One Trick Pony food critic, and his favorite burger is the Old John, a diner-style burger with cheese, shredded lettuce, onion, tomato, pick, mayo and mustard. Also be sure to check out the Gospel Plow, loaded with caramelized onions, Funyuns and ranch. A vegetarian burger is also available, and most everyone can find something to love at One Trick Pony. Their classic burger is loaded with pickles, and Brown describes the eatery as a “pickle-forward company.” Brown tasted more than two dozen pickles trying to find the perfect one for their burgers. You can also participate in their pickle toss competition on the Monon Trail. “I wanted a way to connect with the

community,” Brown says of the pickle toss. The next pickle competition is happening the second week of July, and be sure to follow One Trick Pony on social media for more details. While creating the menu, Brown endeavored to ensure that every item was thoughtfully curated without being fancy. He works with Fischer Farms to offer high-quality patties. Brown has mastered a classic eats approach with a unique perspective, and he describes his concept as “common food approached in an uncommon way.” One Trick Pony is located at 1021 Broad Ripple Avenue in Indianapolis.
