hroughout her college career, Molly Sahm was honing a craft outside the classroom that is now as big a part of her life as the skills she was acquiring from her inclass studies. While studying exercise science and sports performance at IU, and subsequently Marian University where she played for the women’s basketball team, Sahm was asked by her father Ed, who founded a string of popular Indy restaurants starting back in the 1980s, to create a few mosaics to be displayed at a couple of his eateries. She took to the task with relish, igniting a passion for an endeavor that she now works at on a near-daily basis. “I always liked art but really started diving into it in college,” Sahm says. “I did take an independent art class in high school that got me going on mosaics. I started painting in college for extra money, and then when my dad asked me to do some mosaics for his restaurants I really got into it and it kept going from there.” Before graduating in 2015, Sahm started posting images of a few of her paintings and mosaic works on her Instagram page and before long began receiving not only purchase offers, but also commission requests. “I like painting but I would say mosaics are my favorite to do right now, but it's a lovehate relationship and each piece requires a lot of patience,” she says. “I have to find a good podcast or something good to listen to to get me started, and then I’m off and on my way. With each piece I do now, I try to make it more difficult and have more detail.” Sahm’s mosaics and paintings range from pop culture images to sports logos to abstract pieces, and she was able to put several of her works on display recently during art shows at Scarlet Lane Brewing downtown and One Up Arcade Bar in Broad Ripple. “I’d like to do a show at a place like Liter House, and not just have other artists but 8 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atBRip.com
incorporate bands or comedians around Indy,” she says. “Almost like a farmers market but for art. That’s something that I really want to look into later this year.” No stranger to the family restaurant biz, Sahm fondly recalls working at several of her dad’s establishments growing up, and these days when she’s able to tear herself way from her art workstation, she heads to Half Liter Beer & BBQ Hall in Broad Ripple to help out her brother Eddie, who runs the place. “I always worked at The Roost in Fishers through high school and a little in college,” recalls Sahm, who resides in Fishers but has plans to relocate to Broad Ripple later this year. “Half Liter is fun and has a great environment. I do art Monday through Friday and then work there on the weekends. I’ve always loved Broad Ripple.” Sahm says learning the craft of mosaics has not only stimulated her own creativity but has made her more receptive to others’ ideas along the way. “I used to break glass with a hammer and try to find pieces to work with, and that took a long time then I learned glass cutting, which has completely changed how I can approach mosaics,” she explains. “I used to reject a lot of ideas for pieces, but now I’m willing to try something that’s crazy detailed if people are willing to pay for the time and detail that it’s going to take.” Not one to stay complacent, Sahm has plans to try new mediums in the future and apply her mosaic talents to unique surfaces. “I definitely want to start doing furniture and try to mosaic some cool chairs,” she says. “Woodworking with frames and glass blowing are also interesting to me. I’ve never tried epoxying, so working with chairs that are functional and that I can mosaic is something I want to explore. Right now I’m just trying to get all the projects that I have lined up for people done but that would be a nice next step.” For more info on Molly Sahm’s artwork, visit instagram.com/getyousahm_art. 9 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atBRip.com

he heavy thump of the heel rapidly striking the pavement is softened by a good pair of running shoes. Thick rubber meets breathable mesh and stabilizes each stride. Shoes that are too large skid along the ground, hissing as a runner searches for a rhythm. Too tight brings tension up the calves. Yet some young Indianapolis runners wear this to practice. Beyond Monumental, a local non-profit and race organization, noticed kids wearing ill-fitting shoes to running club and partnered with Athletic Annex to begin providing running shoes. This focus for detail and charity spreads to the rest of Beyond Monumental’s works. “The school programming we do helps build a sense of community among the people we impact. It shows that we’re making a difference year round, that we’re much more than a marathon that comes through the neighborhood once a year,” says Rhiannon Johns Marketing and Communications Manager. “We’re reaching out to these schools, and it can have a lifelong impact for kids.” It all started with the CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon. Founder Carlton Ray wanted to create a race that benefited public education, so he started the race in 2007. Since then, Beyond Monumental has expanded to a half marathon race at Fort Ben and a mile-long race down Meridian Street. It also has programs for moms, kids and employers. The Races The CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon
takes participants through downtown Indianapolis. Runners zip past Lucas Oil Stadium toward the beginning of the race, curve around Monument Circle, glide down Massachusetts Avenue make their way up to Broad Ripple before ending back downtown. “Our race is a great showcase of the city. It hits all of the major points, including downtown,” Johns says. “It brings a lot of people together, and it also brings people into the city.” Almost 50% of the participants travel from out of state for the marathon portion of the event, which also includes a half marathon and 5K. The flat roads attract runners who want to set a personal record or reach Olympic status. Beyond Monumental extends past the flat asphalt of downtown to the paths at Fort Ben, too. The Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben is for those who prefer trees over skyscrapers. Finishers can enjoy a cookout beyond the finish line. The Programs While race day is important, Beyond Monumental wants to impact runners’ weekdays. Since 2015, the organization has partnered with Apex Benefits to create the Apex Monumental Challenge. The competition brings companies of similar sizes against each other to see who has more dedicated participants. A point system designates the winners who get a traveling

trophy and a provided lunch. It’s a free program just to get the workforce running or volunteering. But not everyone works a nine-to-five. For moms that work 24/7, there’s a program to fit their schedule. Partnered with The Produce Moms, Monumental Moms provides team leaders and free events. They can meet up and run or just encourage one another through their Facebook group. The Kids Beyond Monumental has donated more than $1.3M to Indianapolis Public School charities, but Monumental Kids Movement brings assistance directly to the students. Monumental Kids Movement started in 2012 to engage schools’ running clubs and teach the kids fitness and nutrition. The one-school trial grew into a 58-school program reaching elementary through high schools. “A lot of our students who come may have fewer opportunities than those outside of Marion County might have,” says Casey Collins Director of Operations and Community Outreach. “A lot of times, they’ve never been downtown or participated in an event outside of the school day.”
Collins says he’s grateful his small-town high school had a wellestablished cross country program. Not everyone has the same opportunity, he enjoys extending additional opportunities to Indianapolis youth. “With any sport, it helps build life skills and discipline,” Collins says. “It’s a tool for students to live a healthy lifestyle.” Each participating school receives a 48-page guide for the running club supervisor and, if needed, student volunteers from IUPUI. Clubs with at least a 75-percent attendance rate receive free entry and transportation to a 5K and free running shoes. Students complete the program at the finish line of a 5K, jogging or strolling alongside volunteers. “We get testimonials each year of kids on the last day of school wearing their medal because it was the highlight of their year,” Collins says. “We’re not trying to change the whole world. We’re a piece of the puzzle helping students create a healthy lifestyle.” Beyond Monumental seeks to fulfill the needs of the Indianapolis community whether it’s setting up times for moms to run or providing that perfect running shoe for young athletes.

BENDER AND ROCAP EDUCATIONAL SERVICES 941 E. 86th St. Suite 100 Indianapolis 317-205-9215 Bender-Rocap.com
Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
Since 2005, Bender and Rocap Educational Services, located at 941 East 86th Street, has been providing quality academic tutoring and standardized test preparation in the Indianapolis area. Staffed with experienced subject-specific tutors, their goal is to provide students with a comfortable environment where educational skills can be increased. The outcome for their clients is increased confidence in tackling standardized college and high school level tests as well as stronger academic performance in the classroom. Founders Barbara Bender and Joan Rocap taught together at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, amassing decades of experience between them. During their time at Brebeuf, Bender served as chairman of the English department, and Rocap headed up the math Maggie, our office manager, handles all department as scheduling requests chairman. Both
continued their commitment to education by tutoring students, usually at public venues such as libraries. “One day we ran into each other at a library,” Rocap says. “We were discussing how noisy it was and how difficult it was to find an open table we could use to meet with our students. Then Barb said, ‘What if we go together and get a small office?’” Bender and Rocap realized they needed seed money to fund their venture. Fortunately, Roncalli High School was searching for educators to run a preparation program for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Funds from that endeavor, plus their own individual tutoring, enabled them to open their business in May of 2005. “At the beginning, it was just the two of us, but the business quickly took off and grew,” Rocap says. “Over the years we have expanded and moved offices several times. Today we have more than 30 tutors that work with us.”
mathematics, sciences, world languages and elementary school studies. Fees are $60 for an hour and $45 for 45 minutes. “We can find a tutor for almost all requests,” Rocap adds. “Most are certified teachers, but a few are college professors or professionals that have a high-level understanding of their field such as chemistry. We have college students that come for help in the summer. Right now, we are getting more and more calls from parents of younger students. We have good elementary school tutors. Presently, our youngest student is a kindergartner learning Chinese.
One aspect that sets Bender and Rocap Educational Services apart from other similar companies is tutoring that is almost exclusively one-on-one, and each tutor specializes in a specific subject. This subject-specific tutoring extends to standardized test preparation which, besides the SAT, includes the American College Test (ACT). For students planning on attending private school, coaching on the High School Placement Test (HSPT) and Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is also provided.
Bender and Rocap Educational Services also provide help to students that are not taking a traditional education path. They offer tutoring to homeschoolers and those who are enrolled in online classes. In addition, the company has the credentials to proctor and submit exams for online courses.
Tutoring for a multitude of subjects is offered. Fields covered include all levels of English,

“Our tutors genuinely care about their students and enjoy working with them,” Rocap says. “Students feel comfortable here and they want to come.”

7 Reasons To Get Excited For Football Season Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
ootball season is right around the corner and while you may or may not be a diehard fan, lots of people are ready for the season to get started, not only because of the game but because of all that goes along with it! Many Americans would suggest that football is the best sport in the world. Here are seven reasons why fans and non-fans alike are ready for the season to start again.
F
1. Togetherness: No matter what you think, football brings us together. At all levels of the game, people come together to cheer or boo. You bond with those sitting next to you in the bleachers or standing next to you on the field. You root for your team and hope for a win together with all the rest of the fans around you. You watch together with your family and friends in the comfort of your own home. It’s a common bond between you and those on your favorite team. 2. Rivalries Don’t say you like all teams because that’s not true, and you know it. We all know there are teams that just don’t get along and don’t like each other. Like the Packers and Bears, the Cowboys and Eagles, and obviously the Colts and the Patriots. Rivalries bring out the best in athletes and encourage competition, but the most intense rivalries are amongst the National Football League teams. And a good rivalry is not only exciting, but great for ratings!
3. Food Football food is just the best. Dips, pretzels, burgers, nachos, beer. What more could you ask for? The best part of watching a game is lingering around the kitchen island or visiting the concessions during halftime at the stadium. And did you know that more food is consumed on Super Bowl Sunday than at Thanksgiving? 4. Tailgating When you go to a game, high school, college, or NFL, you don’t show up right at gametime. Like any good fan, you arrive a little early and with a cooler! Hanging outside the venue with friends for hours before the big game is a must-have experience and can be extra special if you are visiting somewhere like Lambeau Field or Notre Dame Stadium. No matter the weather, tailgating is all about having fun and indulging in unhealthy food, drinks and games. Oh, and you might even make friends with those on the other side! 5. Traditions Football is a tradition most enjoyed on Friday nights while growing up and Sundays with family. If you love the NFL, it’s very likely that you grew up watching with relatives who followed a favorite team or just the sport in general. I mean, what do you think of when Thanksgiving comes around? That’s right, food and football. Families across the country go out to play America’s favorite sport on the front lawns and when they are done, everyone heads back inside to watch the game. It’s almost religious.
6. Fantasy Football The return of the NFL also means that fantasy football is upon us. Not only is it a hobby for many, it’s a multi-million dollar industry that paved the way for all other fantasy sports. People can compete with friends by picking and following their favorite players to create their fantasy team. It requires a little savvy and strategy, but is fun to follow and also to try to one-up your friends! 7. The Super Bowl Even those who don’t like football love the Super Bowl. Considered a national holiday by many, this is a spectacle enjoyed by all. The rivalries are fierce, the stadiums are packed, the half-time shows are unreal, and obviously the commercials are amazing. The Super Bowl is the culmination of the entire season and watchers everywhere stay up late and call in sick the next day just to enjoy the entire show. In the end, when fall rolls around, we are totally ready for Fridays to be spent at the local game, Saturdays to be taken over by the best college games, and Sundays to be taken over by pregame shows and commentators. We all feel better when football is back in action and we can enjoy the season for all the right reasons, with family, friends and even those who are cheering for the other side.

COLTS LEAVE GRAND PARK WITH HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR 2019 Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided by the Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts have multiple reasons to be optimistic about their upcoming season.
goals for their regular season record or playoff advancement.
“I’ve been on a lot of football teams throughout my life and last year was probably the most group-oriented team I’ve played for,” Hines says. “We didn’t After a 1-5 start last year the team went on hang our heads or blame each other when to notch a 10-6 record, earning their first we were 1-5. We just all held each other playoff spot since 2014 in the process and accountable. Now the expectations are becoming the third team in the league’s higher but we’re still holding each other history to make the playoffs after starting accountable and everybody’s doing their with a 1-5 record. part. The biggest thing is trusting that the guy next to you will do his job.” Nevertheless, Running Back Nyheim Hines, who joined the Colts last season Hines became third overall in receptions after playing at North Carolina State, for rookies with 63 catches during says the team’s approach moving into the 2018-2019 season — third in the fall is focusing on steady collective Colts franchise history, which is fairly improvement, rather than setting specific impressive for a running back — and
attributes his success to a diligent study of how his position fits in with the Colts’ overall offensive approach. “For me it was learning more about how the offense works and tuning in when coach was talking about routes, he says. “I was always taking notes because even when coach was talking to T.Y. (Hilton) I knew I might be out there at some point. And staying tuned in to what Andrew (Luck) likes, because whatever Andrew tells you to do, that’s what you do.” Linebacker Anthony Walker, who finished second in tackles for the Colts last season, says the team never lost confidence in each other even during the 1-5 start. “We established good camaraderie during

training camp, and we knew we had the right guys in the locker room and the leaders to turn things around after things didn’t start the way we wanted them to,” says Walker, now in his third season with the Colts. “We were in the playoff mindset even when we were 1-5, so after that you can’t lose a game and we knew that.” In August, the Colts headed out to Grand Park Sports Campus for the second year in a row for their official training camp, and Hines says training at the venue these last two years has been a refreshing change of pace. “It is pretty cool to get away from 56th Street and go somewhere else,” he says. “The Westfield facility is nice. I’ve had friends who have had basketball tournaments there. I don’t know if our 56th Street facility could hold all the fans that came out, so it was good to be up there and I’m excited to be back there. And it’s cool for the fans to see how hard we’re working and get the first glimpse of the team before our preseason games.” The Colts faced the Buffalo Bills on August 8 for their first preseason game and also hosted the Cleveland Browns for a few joint practices prior to their preseason matchup. 19 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atBRip.com
Head Coach Frank Reich says Grand Park provides an optimal setting for his players to prepare mentally and physically. “This is an exciting place,” Reich says of the facility. “We really have had a great reception from the people here at Grand Park. There have been really good vibes all around the layout. It feels like it’s a high-quality NFL training camp being treated right.” Tons of fans turned out for training camp once again this year. Both the coaches and players say camp is an exciting time as the regular seasons draws closer.

“You want to use that time at training camp to connect with your brothers, and the Grand Park facility allowed us to do that,” Walker says. “Camp is hard and it’s supposed to be hard, but we had a lot of fun with the walk to practice every day and seeing the fans.” Hines reiterates that the team isn’t focusing on specific long-term playoff goals at this point but rather day-today progress as the regular season approaches. “We’re just talking about how we’re going to get back to that level of play in the Division Round when we lost last season,” he says. “We’re not talking about making it to the playoffs or going 10-6 again. We’re talking about getting one percent better every day. Every day is an opportunity to get better.” The Colts open up their season on the road, September 8, against the Los Angeles Chargers. I N V I T E P R I N C E S S E S TO Y O U R PA RT Y to sit and look pretty but to sing, draw, and interact with the kids,” Chelsea says. “She wanted a fairytale come to life.”

Over a decade ago, Chelsea Couture was vacationing in Mexico with her mom (Crystal) and sister (Claire) when inspiration struck.
Chelsea and her family vowed to do just that. It wasn’t a stretch given that the entire family has a theatre/singing/songwriting/ artistry background.
“We saw people making crazy balloon hats and we thought it would be fun to start a family balloon art business together,” Chelsea says, noting that all three of them nurture a creative spirit.
“If we were going to do this, we wanted to do it right,” Chelsea says, who launched Happily Ever After Productions in 2012, starting with just four princesses.
They came home and learned the tricks of the trade, then formed Balloongenuity in 2009. Though it was a successful business endeavor, they often fielded questions from revelers who were in search of, say, a magician or a clown. Then they began to notice a trend as more and more people were interested in inviting a reallive princess to their party or event. “A woman called and said she’d like to have Rapunzel at her daughter’s party—not just
“Children were in absolute awe to get to meet their favorite princesses,” Chelsea says. There’s the classic princesses such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, and Alice in Wonderland. But the Little Mermaid, the Frog Princess Tiana, and the Snow Princesses (Anna and Elsa) are also very popular. Soon after launching, parents began asking Chelsea, “What do you offer for boys?” So, they invited select
superheroes to join in the fun, and now Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and Captain America (among others) visit parties. The craze has definitely exploded. “Initially, we thought the princesses would be a side thing to our balloon artistry and really it’s the other way around,” Chelsea says. The highly popular Princess Package is a 1.5-hour party that includes entertainment by one character, who is accompanied by the client’s choice of balloon artist, face painter or glitter tattoo artist. The princess presents the birthday girl with a tiara and then provides a musical storytelling show, participates in the cake cutting ceremony, and delivers a special song. If parents also want to incorporate a pinata or something else into the party, they are more than welcome to do so. But for the most part, the princesses are the entertainment.

Unlike at a Disney theme park where kids’ time with characters is limited to a stand-in-line chance to snap a photo and grab an autograph, at these parties, the guests have a chance to chat at length with princesses. “Kids want to know every backstory so they’ll ask about the princess’ parents and their pets, how they got here, everything!” Chelsea says. Happily Ever After will accommodate parties and events within a one-hour driving radius of the Geist area. Though they have traveled as far away as Cincinnati, Louisville, and Chicago, they stay plenty busy just in the Indy area. For instance, in May Aladdin and Jasmine attended Chick-fil-A night. And earlier this spring Moana, Snow White and friends went to an Indianapolis Indians game where they mingled with fans of all ages. Each year the princesses also go to the Whitestown Parks & Rec’s Christmas Ball in Whitestown where princesses engage in a meet-n-greet with attendees. “We see a bump in business in the spring and fall with seasonal festivals and another bump at the Fourth of July and Christmas, but overall we remain steady year-round,” Chelsea says. Several of their princesses have moved on to engage in other communities, booking jobs on cruise ships and even living in the promised land—Disney World. It’s not surprising given that these princesses and superheroes love what they do. “They all really do enjoy interacting with the children,” Chelsea says, noting that they have a really loyal fan base. “Some families will book four or five years in a row, choosing a different princess each time,” Chelsea says. “We feel blessed to be able to do this full-time. We have the best jobs ever!” For more information, call 317-498-3473, email indyprincessparties@aol.com or visit happilyeverafterproductions.com. 23 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atBRip.com
