ursuing your passion takes guts, especially when upending your life is required to create this new alignment. Global travel is at the top of many lists. Many people talk about traveling the world, yet who do you know who has actually uprooted their life to make this radical shift? Debbie Zipes and Cassie Stockamp are two women who independently changed their lifestyles to accommodate global travel. Having a strategic plan: consulting with a financial advisor, making the necessary life changes to make this happen requires determination and courage, and reliance on a few miracles along the way. During 2017, Zipes was faced with her second major health crisis within a year. She had a tumor wrapped around the facial nerve in her neck and her surgery was scheduled in a few short weeks. The worst case was that her face would be paralyzed. This was the second episode of an exhaustive healing journey she had undergone in several months. She had a strong sense that she needed to make a lifestyle shift. Online late one night, she typed the following question into her web browser: "What should I do with my life?” Sites propagated nearly instantaneously beneath her query. The first one that caught her eye was, “What if you had only a year left to live?” Nearly as fast as the search engine displayed these answers, Zipes knew she wanted to travel the world. But how could she afford it? Serendipitously, the following evening, Zipes attended a social event and met a woman who, when asked what she did for a living, answered, “I travel the world.” Zipes asked the woman to meet her for coffee a couple days later. The notes Zipes took from that conversation provided the architectural layout for her new life. Global travel was a realistic possibility and not as expensive as she had assumed. Director of a nonprofit, Zipes shared the news with her Board of Directors, who were gracious in their understanding of her need for a newly designed life. By Thanksgiving in 2017, Debbie had a successful recovery from her surgery (no paralysis). She sold her home, her car and her furniture. She moved a few things to storage and left for five months to the south Pacific. Her first destination was Australia. “I stayed in a hotel in Sydney for the first two nights, then I winged it,” says Zipes, who spent a total of five months in the South Pacific. “I awoke with a positive intention each day to bring peace and brighten the day of those I meet along the way.” Enter Cassie Stockamp. As Stockamp began to socialize her plan of taking her life in a new direction and focus on service around the world as she traveled, friends and professional acquaintances asked, “Do you know Debbie Zipes?” They were introduced by a mutual friend. Zipes had nearly a year of travel experience when she met Stockamp

for coffee to discuss her experiences. Zipes spent five months traveling around Australia, New Zealand, Bali, Borneo, Malaysia and Singapore. She then traveled throughout Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, Uganda and South Africa for three months. Echoing the need for radical shift in her life, Stockamp shared her desire to travel and the two discussed how to make it a reality. Stockamp departed on her first trip on New Year’s Eve 2018. “Having an arrival date of January 1st, 2019 was a perfect start to my new life,” says Stockamp, who, coincidentally, also went to Australia on her first big trip. She has also visited New Zealand, Sri Lanka, India, Argentina, Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands, Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, Bali and Indonesia. Zipes travels for months at a time, while Stockamp prefers shorter sprints of four to five weeks. Both utilize a few websites and connect with local people for a more meaningful experience, which is a safer way to travel when alone. Workaway.com is one of their preferred sites for unique experiences while traveling abroad. Stockamp also instructs yoga and worked in Bali, for instance, teaching classes while embracing local culture. In 2019, Zipes has also traveled to Thailand, Antarctica, England, New Mexico working in a spiritual artist community, Croatia, and went on a delightful road trip to Nebraska to work with “Beyond School Bells” and their design studio

with college students and after-school programs. Zipes has worked on projects for clients even while traveling. Then the pandemic hit. Countries were closing their borders while Stockamp was in Colombia and Zipes was in Costa Rica. The two communicated with each other as to how they were going to get home. Stockamp bought three different plane tickets to get home from Colombia, as there is no direct route. Zipes had an easier time getting back to the U.S. from Costa Rica. Both have created lasting friendships all over the world and have kept in touch with their friends via WhatsApp, checking in during lockdown and hoping for everyone’s safety. During the lockdown, Zipes and Stockamp planned a trip together. They would cycle around Lake Michigan. They did a test run through northern Indiana and met with a shaman in South Bend who described their adventure as a, “rolling vision quest.” They began their journey in Chicago and are circumventing Lake Michigan, starting with its west coast.

“Do your research! Don’t be afraid to travel alone — there are a lot of great sites offering advice for travelers of any age,” Zipes says. “Pack light. It is worth it to have the best quality clothes and most comfortable walking shoes. Anything lightweight and easy to wash and dry. And a backpack without wheels is best, as there are few smooth roads in third world countries.”

“There’s an app for just about anything,” Stockamp adds. “One of my favorite experiences was caring for someone with special needs while on a trip. Enrichment awaits anyone.”

Each of these women steered their life in the direction of their dreams and in doing so, doors opened and an abundance of joy poured in.

G A R D E N G E TAWAY Longtime Gardner Is Finding Joy During COVID-19 Writer & Photographer / Stephanie Duncan
Summer looks different this year. With travel restrictions, canceled sporting events, social distancing and working from home, people are looking for new activities to occupy their free time. Local Broad Ripple resident and longtime gardener, Helen Carroll find small joys in gardening as a way to connect with others during such an isolated time.
Though Carroll has been gardening for a while, she didn’t always find the joy in it that she does now.
Carroll has transformed her small corner lot into a lush vegetable garden oasis over the past nine years and has found her eclectic garden opens up opportunities to connect with others.
She laughs while reminiscing about her dad’s garden.
“I don’t have a dog or kids around anymore, but I have a garden in front of my corner lot,” she says. “And especially during COVID, it has been a great way to socialize with people.” Neighbors will walk by with their dogs and children and her garden allows her to stay connected with her community.
“As a child, I grew up in upstate New York where gardening was a big deal,” Carroll says. “And my father had a big garden in the backyard. I always had to help out and I despised it.”
“As soon as I moved away and got married, bought a house, gardening became important to me,” she says. “My father was thrilled.” When Carroll downsized her living situation and moved to a small double in the heart of Broad Ripple after her divorce, she was skeptical about how she could garden on a small corner lot with no proper backyard.
“Moving here after being on an acre of “The neighborhood kids are amazed at a carrot you can pull ground on the White River, I thought, ‘Oh out of the ground,” she says. “They’re amazed at the tomatoes. my heavens, what am I going to do?’” They look at things differently.” she says.

11 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2020 / atBRip.com
After nine years, her impressive garden, filled with a wide variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers, has encompassed both side yards of her property, sprawling into the front yard beyond the fence. “I love watching my plants grow. I love the pleasure of knowing that I have done this,” Carroll says.
Carroll discovered gardening rewards patience and offers time for reflection. “It’s taught me to sit back and watch what’s happening and to understand that you don’t have control, but you do have an effect on things,” she says. “You learn all the time. Every year is different. Sometimes I have great results and another doesn’t work at all. It changes, and I enjoy that.”
Gardening also inspires her other hobbies, including portraits of her vegetables harvested from her garden. The walls throughout her house are adorned with vibrant vegetable artwork, made from handmade papers, but the art doesn’t stop there. It’s not uncommon to find googly eyes on her actual vegetable harvest in the kitchen. “I had these little hats I used to put on my cat, and then I started putting hats and googly eyes on my sweet potatoes,” she says. “Friends started sending me packages of googly eyes and it's gone from there!”

The time has finally come to tackle those favorite fall activities we all love, and it’s the perfect time to come together and enjoy them with family and friends. With fall comes a great mix of warm and cool weather, and getting outside is a must. Enjoy time outside exploring during the day, and then grab a blanket and get cozy around a fire at night. Here are a few ideas - some new, and some tried and true - for that fall to-do list of yours. The crisp fall weather is great for exploring, and why not add a little challenge to it? Print off a great fall scavenger hunt list, Apple Picking One of the best parts of fall is the apples. Head over to your local pack some snacks, and pick your favorite trail to search on. One list for the family will do just fine, but take pictures with your orchard and have fun picking apples as a family. While you’re finds to make it a little more fun. You could even make this a there, enjoy some ice-cold apple cider and maybe even some apple cider donuts. Then take your pickings home to make your yearly tradition and put all the photos together in a memory book. own apple sauce, apple pie or apple crumble.
Pumpkin Power
Corn Mazes
Corn mazes are all the rage these days. They keep getting bigger, better and more creative. Some people prefer scary mazes, but the ones you can get lost in for hours without being scared half to death are just fine too. If you take kids, keep them close or maybe grab a megaphone before you go, just in case. However you like your corn mazes, this is a great fall activity to do as a family. Look up a museum or farm nearby to see what they have to offer.
Nature Scavenger Hunts
Just like apples, it’s the time of year for pumpkin everything pies, lattes, rolls, muffins, and don’t forget those pumpkin seeds. When this time of year rolls around, there’s no limit to what you can do with pumpkin, so have fun with it.
Decorate Pumpkins
Another fall must-do is pumpkin decorating. Head to your favorite pumpkin patch and pick a few pumpkins of various sizes. Look for pumpkins with unique shapes and interesting markings. Bring them home and have at it. Get creative with

carving, painting and adding accessories.
Go Geocaching
If you don’t already know what this is, you are in for a real treat. It’s like treasure hunting but close to home, and while the treasure might just be documenting your name on a tiny piece of paper and putting it back, this is fun for everyone. Download a geocaching app and begin your hunt. This is something fun to do that’s a little different, and provides a good time for the whole family. Sometimes there are hidden gems very close to home.
Go Hiking
Spring and summer are not the only times to hike. Fall is actually ideal with its cooler temperatures. Pick a state park to explore together as a family. Take in the gorgeous, changing scenery while enjoying a little outdoor exercise.
Sit Around the Campfire
What’s a better way to stay warm on a cool fall evening than sitting around a fire? Add some wood to your campfire, and sit out this fall roasting marshmallows and creating unique versions of s’mores. Add to your evening around the fire by

Fall Foliage Drives
The leaves on the trees in the fall are just the best, and while there are some locations that may have more vibrant colors than others, there’s an amazing amount of beauty to be found in the trees this time of year. Challenge yourself and keep a count of how many different colors you can find.
Be Thankful
Lastly, start your very own thankful jar. Decide how often you want to write down what you are thankful for. Try jotting down notes every day for the month of September or October, and then pull your notes out and read them for Thanksgiving. Write down events, memories or even small treats you enjoyed. It’s a sweet and easy way to remind yourself that it’s a wonderful life, and to enjoy the little things. Hopefully this gives you a starting point for fall activities to try with the family. Take in as much as you can and have a great, safe and fun-filled fall!

WISH-TV Personality Dick Wolfsie Retires After Nearly 40 Years on Indianapolis TV Writer / Shelly Sack Photographer / Eli Beaverson
Longtime television personality Dick Wolfsie seems pretty content on a comfortable August afternoon in Geist relaxing on his back porch. From his raised perch, he can keep an eye on the flowers, birds, squirrels and even “Rocky,” the raccoon who pops out from the treeline from time to time begging for grapes Wolfsie sneaks behind his wife’s back. Aaah. The life of a recent retiree who has more than earned his time to sit back and enjoy whatever comes next. His official last day was July 30, from WISH-TV channel 8, where he had told other people’s stories for the past 30 years. His former colleagues prepared a half-hour special recounting some of his memorable guests (Richard Simmons anyone?). The station passed along a letter from Gov.
Eric Holcomb and a declaration from the mayor’s office declaring it “Dick Wolfsie Day,” in the city. Even the Indianapolis Colts got in on the accolades and gifted him with a special No. 8 jersey for broadcasting excellence.
He booked his nearly 3,000 segments personally and was known as a storyteller. He was always out in the community and his stories ranged from hilarious to controversial to educational to serious topics. On-air hair transplant? Check. His beloved beagle Barney barking up a storm? Check. Organ donor families and recipients meeting live on air? Check.
“Over the summer, I realized I wanted to go out on my own terms. I thought I’d just fade away,” Wolfsie says of his surprise to have his colleagues recognize him and his life’s work. Wolfsie had been a mainstay on “What a thrill. It was great.” Indianapolis-area stations since the mid1980s. After being paired with Patty Spitler for an afternoon show, the station came Wolfsie didn’t know it back in March that a under new ownership and Wolfsie was particular segment would be his final career out of a job, but 36 years later he says the piece. He highlighted two women from short stint changed his life. He moved on to Marion who had adopted a dog from the Fox59 (WXIN) under different call letters Humane Society that had been there for for a late-night talk show that aired once seven years. With the statewide shutdown weekly. He said it was similar in vein to early looming due to the pandemic and other Jerry Springer Show days, but quick to add guests canceling, Wolfsie says he realized he wouldn’t be able to continue his type of show he did some topics first. Due to expenses of a live show, Wolfsie once again found due to virus concerns, coupled with his age himself looking for a job. and health status as a cancer survivor. 20 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2020 / atBRip.com
“My whole career was not being fired, just losing jobs,” he says. With a little time on his hands, he found himself strolling around newly constructed Union Station and the idea of a morning show took root. Not one to dawdle with an idea, Wolfsie made an agreement with Channel 13 (WTHR) and his mornings from 9-10 o’clock were full for the next five years. He proudly recalls standing up pretty well against the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Phil Donahue. “I was proud of it and still am,” he says. “With our staff of three versus theirs of 20 or 30, we produced a show with interesting guests and topics.” When he lost the show in 1990, it was Channel 8 that came to him in the name of former News Director Lee Jiles. “Lee called and said, ‘I have a crazy idea

and I think you’d be perfect for it. Go out from 5-7 a.m. and do reports.’ I obviously took the job, but at the age of 44, I thought, ‘If I’m still doing this when I’m 50, shoot me.’ And I did it until I was 73. My skill — I knew how to find good stuff,” Wolfsie says. In the early part of his pre-television career, Wolfie earned his master’s in American literature from George Washington University and taught at his former high school in New Rochelle, N.Y. for nine years. His first television gig was in Columbus, Ohio, where he was recognized with an Emmy for best host in the Midwest. His show was early to the game when cable television boxes could allow viewers to interact with the programming by providing their opinions. He went on to audition for Good Morning New York, which he says was beyond his experience level. His replacement? Regis Philbin. Then on to Boston and Chicago doing short-term hosting before making Indianapolis his and Mary Ellen’s home. The couple have a grown son Brett. Throughout his career, he has received dozens of honors, including a second Emmy and a Casper award. The Comeback Kid, who managed to stay on television for nearly four decades and written 12 books, may have retired but has plans to keep his side gig as a syndicated humor columnist. As he sits on his porch, Wolfsie instantly names Steve Allen as his hero, when asked about memorable interviews. Allen is remembered as co-creator and the first host of The Tonight Show, but was also a musician, actor, radio host and author. Ever the humorist himself, Wolfsie says he recently stumbled upon a third-grade report card where the teacher comments, “He doesn’t shut up, tries to make people laugh and I’m concerned about his future.” As far as what’s next? “I don’t know. And I’m okay with that,” he says. 22 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2020 / atBRip.com
