THE ROLE OF A LIFETIME ACTOR KATE HUFFMAN IS HELPING OTHERS THROUGH BODY POSITIVITY COACHING

Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photographer / Michael Durr

Kate Huffman recalls vividly from a young age that she wanted to be an actress, and she also vividly remembers an incident in grade school that impacted her self-image. The award-winning actor and writer has held many acting roles on popular shows like “Fresh Off the Boat” and “Castle.” Among the many awards and accolades she has achieved in her career, perhaps the longest-running role Huffman portrayed was projecting the image that everything was OK. The image-conscious acting industry caused her to keep her decades-long eating disorder and body dysmorphic disorder offstage, until one day she decided to write a new role for herself that is now helping women and teens around the world. Huffman created a one-woman show around her health issues, bringing her personal and professional worlds together. This created space for healing to occur, and a new career that allowed Huffman to be her authentic self. She tested out the concept in Los Angeles in front of close friends, then friends of friends, and that is when the concept gained traction. The response inspired her to take her one-woman show on the road across the U.S. and in Europe. The solo show, titled “I’M TOO FAT FOR THIS SHOW,” dealt with her 20 years of eating disorders, obsessive compulsive-disorder and chronic pain. The show received much acclaim. “This was literally the most terrifying thing I have ever done,” Huffman says. “Once I put that out in the world and I wasn’t rejected, but rather I was accepted and thanked, met with audience member after audience member thanking me with tears streaming down their faces and telling me their story - that is when I realized that my experience was not unique and it inspired me to seek answers to these issues.” After her last show in Los Angeles in the fall of 2019, she spent time writing a book and preparing to do a book tour in theaters. She was planning to resume her tour in the spring when COVID-19 hit. Huffman found herself sitting around in her apartment, with her gym closed and the refrigerator too close. That is when she saw an opportunity to walk the walk and focus on healing her body dysmorphic disorder.

6 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2021 / BroadRippleMag.com

“I felt this need, because I was going around the country, talking about these eating disorders and body dysmorphic issues, and I was making jokes about the saying, ‘Do as I say, not as I do,’ ” Huffman says. “The reality was that I was still actively living in that world of obsessive calorie counting, working out and not loving my body at all.” The first concept was to acknowledge that many images pushed on society in media and on TV regarding body ideals are lies. “I have always known that, but still felt like I should live by them,” Huffman says. That is when she realized it was easy to tell others that these messages are lies, but harder to tell herself. She needed to acknowledge that they are lies for her too, and let them go. This thought caused another pivot that would lead her to question all of the old stories.

positivity coach, with the intention to speak more intelligently on tour and perhaps speak on college campuses. With COVID delaying that plan, she was about to see how it was going to come together.

Huffman became quarantine-weary and old thought patterns of body hatred arose. “That is when I realized if I was feeling that way, it was probably happening that way for a lot of other people as well,” she says. “In my social media groups, I just asked if anyone would like some body-acceptance classes and the interest was strong, the response was immediate, and I began teaching a lot of classes.” The classes were so popular that Huffman launched an online community to collaborate, provide support and continue more free trainings. The demand for the workshops gained so much traction that she now offers two courses - a free, short introduction course and a signature course for those ready to dive a little deeper. The signature course, called the Body Confidence Solution, is a comprehensive, nine-week program packed with tools and information that can be completed at the participant’s own pace. Huffman encourages people to go through it with an accountability

INDY OVER EVERYTHING LOCAL APPAREL SHOP IS ALL ABOUT CHAMPIONING THE CIRCLE CITY Writer / Shay McCoy Photographer / Michael Durr

There’s nothing that many Hoosiers enjoy more than repping where they’re from, and the pride that residents of Indianapolis have is evident in the brands they represent. Indy Over Everything (IOE) is all about pride and enthusiasm for the city. Husband and wife Scotty and Shannon Hunt founded the business in 2017 as a way to give city pride a platform in the form of apparel, and let Indy’s own have a way to find those like them. The Hunts are originally from Indiana. Shannon attended Purdue University and Scotty attended DePauw University. They moved to Chicago for around five years. They found that they were always excited to find out someone was from Indiana, and the way people’s faces lit up when talking about Indy was heartwarming. Changes in jobs brought them back to their home state, and they didn’t find the same enthusiasm and pride for Indy that they had seen outside of the state. They wanted to start a brand that focused on pride for their city, without being too tourist-oriented or emphasizing on landmarks. Out of this, IOE was created, and they represent the city with simple but compelling, recognizable designs that brand Indy in a way that makes people proud to be from here. The IOE designs are all about Indy and pride for the city. Scotty is the creative mastermind of the brand, and comes up with designs, whether they be from ideas he has or comments from others. He also takes inspiration from his surroundings and has a bank of ideas he can refer to when creating new apparel. His artist sister-in-law brings those designs to life, and they come up with the apparel to showcase the designs. The Hunts have learned from their successes and failures. They always love to see what designs people end up loving, and what constructive feedback they can use for the next designs. 9 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2021 / BroadRippleMag.com

The Hunts have built IOE on Indy pride, and their first partnership with Sullivan’s Hardware & Garden is a great example. This is the first time they’ve sold their apparel in stores and pivoted from their regular buy-and-supply model, and they’ve seen great success. They felt that a partnership with Sullivan’s would be a good fit for their brand, and recognize Sullivan’s is so much more than just hardware. They also have a booth at the annual GermanFest event every fall, where customers can purchase IOE apparel. The Hunts are high school sweethearts, and find that their business is benefitted by their marriage. They slid into their business roles effortlessly and have a lot of mutual respect for one another, which keeps things seamless and exciting. Scotty and Shannon balance each other out and trust each other’s intuition. Because of this, they are able to have total control over brand messaging and designs. They both have supportive family members who love lending a helping hand to their local brand. The Hunts have set apart IOE from other brands by being genuinely passionate about the city. They eat, sleep and live in Indianapolis, and find ways to bring that hometown pride into their brand. They truly exemplify this by creating high-quality apparel. Everything they sell is something they wear regularly, and they know their customers support their mission and vision. It’s a small, family-owned brand so every aspect is personal, down to the handwritten notes they place in each and every order that goes out. The business stands for what Indianapolis is all about - city pride, homegrown roots and unmatched hospitality. Shannon loves the people of Indy, and finds them humble and friendly. She sees “local people trying to make things happen,” as she puts it, and finds encouragement and inspiration for the business. “Indy knows exactly what it is,” Scotty says. Guggman Haus Brewing Co. Pairs Beer Concept With Local Racing History Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Michael Durr

There’s a lot happening at Guggman Haus Brewing Co. to attract locals. In addition to the beer and family-friendly atmosphere, the brewery is also preserving a vital piece of Indianapolis racing history. Located in the city’s Riverside neighborhood, Guggman Haus resides on the old stomping grounds of the Boyle Racing Headquarters, home to many famous Indy 500 drivers in the 1930s and 1940s including three-time winner Wilbur Shaw. “Guggman Haus is very much this cozy, cabin vibe with outdoor influence, but we’ve paired it with the racing brand by bringing in the black-and-white photographs and tying in three of our core beers,” says Co-founder Courtney Guggenberger. “You have Wilbur’s Prize Pilsner, Boyle Brown ale and Winner’s Milk Jug stout that are all named for the

racing side of things. The vintage racing pairs well with what we’re trying to do with our brand as well. It kind of just all meshes together. We really try to do justice in how we talk about the legacy of Wilbur Shaw.” Founded by Guggenberger and her identical twin sister Abby Gorman, along with their husbands Derek and Ryan, Guggman Haus started out as a humble brewhouse back in 2019, before expanding to include a taproom, Festhall, beer garden and more in June of this year. In addition to a selection of award-winning beer, Guggman Haus will soon offer a Germaninspired food menu including giant pretzels with beer cheese, burgers, brats and more. Originally from Evansville, the sisters were first introduced to Indianapolis when they attended Butler. After graduating in 2010, Guggenberger moved to Germany for a year with Derek in 2012 for his job. While there, the Guggenbergers discovered how much they were drawn to the communal side of beer.

“When we were in Germany, we didn’t know a lot about beer,” Guggenberger says. “We started to learn a little bit more, and we grew a really big appreciation for the traditions around beer over there and how it really just brought people together.” Abby and Ryan discovered a similar beercentric community while briefly living in Denver. “Around the same time, my sister and her husband moved to Denver just to go explore

14 / BROAD RIPPLE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2021 / BroadRippleMag.com

out there, and they fell in love with the beer and the culture - that outdoor influence of going hiking and then going to grab a beer,” Guggenberger says. Following these experiences in Denver and Germany, both sisters relocated to the Broad Ripple area, where they still live today. “We were looking for something that reminded us of that walkability you find all over Europe - that’s what brought us to Broad Ripple,” Guggenberger says. As both couples began home brewing, they eventually had the idea to start their own business, based around their love for building community through beer.

Ryan Forman, Co-Founder, Finance Director Abby Gorman, Co-Founder, Director of Taproom Experience Courtney Guggenberger, Co-Founder, Head of Marketing Derek Guggenberger, Co-Founder, Director of Brewing Operations

“We just started talking about this idea of creating something that we could really own and guide ourselves, but also to have it be rooted in community and build it for others,” Guggenberger says. “The idea of being an entrepreneur and guiding our own path was really appealing to all of us.”

As the Guggman Haus team began looking for a location to house their business, they came in contact with a group of vintage racing enthusiasts, who presented them with a grand idea. “They were looking to save this building that has significant racing history from complete city demolition,” Guggenberger says. “They wanted a business to be the anchor of that spot in order to help bring the legacy of the racing back to life. We heard the vision and saw the space. It was significantly larger than we had initially planned when we had put our business plans together, but our visions aligned.” Hence, Guggman Haus Brewing Co.

found its home at the former Boyle Racing Headquarters. Now, after years of renovation, the brewery has reached its fullest form, with a sprawling facility that suits the whole family. “It really just has a handmade touch, and that’s what we wanted to go with all along - something that’s cozy, cabin-y, and that families can come and enjoy,” Guggenberger says. “We have kids of our own. The first two years it was 21 and over, but now it actually is a family destination.” In reflecting on the success of Guggman Haus up to this point, Guggenberger is grateful for the community of beer lovers who have come to embrace the owners’ vision.

“We built it for other people to enjoy, and the fact that they are is humbling and rewarding in and of itself,” Guggenberger says. “Now, to build a space that families can enjoy together as well, we see ourselves in their shoes because we are also that family. I have two little kids, and my sister has two little kids. To be able to bring a welcoming atmosphere for everybody and actually see them enjoy it is at the heart of what we’ve been so excited to do.” Guggman Haus Brewing Co. is located at 1701 Gent Avenue in Indianapolis. BASIC SCONE RECIPE Amanda Gibson of Indy Dough

INGREDIENTS •2 3/4 cups all purpose flour •2 TBS granulated sugar (1/4 cup sugar if making sweet scones) •1 TBS baking powder •1 tsp kosher salt •8 TBS unsalted butter (1 stick)-cold •2 eggs •1/2 cups half and half •2 extra tablespoons of half and half or milk for brushing on top.

This is a basic scone recipe that you can use for either savory or sweet scones by adjusting your sugar amount and whatever fillings you would like to add in. For the best results, think of fillings that don’t add liquid, like nuts, spices, cheese, freeze dried or dried fruit, fresh herbs or roasted root vegetables. Scones can be any shape. I like triangles, but sometimes a different shape is easier for other people.

DIRECTIONS •Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl, stir, and set aside •Measure out liquid and set aside •Cube butter into small quarter inch pieces •Toss butter in flour mix and coat each cube with flour •With your thumb and index finger smash butter tossing and coating with flour until all butter has been smashed •Add in whatever scone filling chosen and mix around in the dry ingredients. For this recipe, there’s 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese and 1/2 cup of chopped dates •Crack eggs into liquid and whisk •Add eggs and liquid mix to dry and mix around until all flour is hydrated and becomes a dough. This dough will be shaggy but should hold together as one mass if properly mixed. •Form into a six inch in diameter circle •Cut out 8 triangles •Place on a lined baking sheet and freeze for 20 minutes freezing scones helps hold their shape •Preheat oven to 425 •Brush a little heavy cream or milk on the tops of each scone to help with browning •Add extra toppings after brushing. In this recipe, a pinch of extra shredded cheese was added to the tops. •Bake for 2325 minutes •Allow to cool before enjoying

NEW QB IN TOWN

with a laugh. “I hate to break it to some people, but nope.”

Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Carson Wentz has heard the rumors and can confirm - he and Prince Harry are two different people despite their similar looks.

Traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Indianapolis Colts in March of 2021, Wentz follows in the footsteps of the now-retired Phillip Rivers, who took the Colts to the playoffs in his lone year with the team. Drafted at number two by Philadelphia in the 2016

“We’re not the same person,” Wentz says

NFL Draft, Wentz won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017, where he first played under current Colts Head Coach Frank Reich, who served as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator. Although born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Wentz spent most of his upbringing in North Dakota - a state he still has many ties to today.

“Both of my parents are there, and I have a bunch of friends and stuff back there,” Wentz says. “I grew up there, went to high school there and went to college there. North Dakota is definitely home. I love that place and love those people back there.” While Indianapolis may be completely new terrain for him and his family, Wentz at least has a familiar face here in town with Reich. “I loved playing for him as my coach and loved working together with him as my offensive coordinator,” Wentz says. “We just really got along well off the field and really connected on a deeper level spiritually. I just thought we had a really good thing in Philly working together, so I think we were both mutually excited to get back and work together again.” While Carson, his wife Madison, and their 1-year-old daughter Hadley have been busy settling in, the Indianapolis community has

made sure to welcome them with open arms. “The way we’ve been welcomed and embraced has just been really cool, both football-wise from the organization but also in the community,” Wentz says. “It just seems like such a family-friendly environment. Everyone’s rooting for you, pulling for you and wants you to succeed.”

When he’s not out on the gridiron, Wentz also stays busy with a nonprofit he started called the Audience of One (AO1) Foundation. A devout Christian, Wentz has tried to use his platform for good since entering the NFL. “When I was a rookie, I knew that my purpose was so much bigger than throwing

touchdowns on Sunday,” he says. “Coming to my faith when I was in college, I knew there was a platform that was different. Lord knows how long I’ll have that platform, so as a rookie I said, ‘Let’s start the foundation. I don’t know how many years I’ll be in this position to have a voice, have eyes on me and make a difference, so while we’ve got it, let’s make the most of it.’”

fashion out here in the Indianapolis area.” The AO1 Foundation also facilitates an Outdoor Ministry, which aims to serve children with life-threatening illnesses or other life-altering medical situations in order to foster a passion for outdoor activities and bring people closer to God through discipleship. Last but not least, the AO1 Foundation is involved in a sports complex in the country of Haiti.

The AO1 Foundation consists of three separate ministries according to Wentz. The first of these is called Thy Kingdom Crumb.

“It’s just been really cool to see God working through it and for us to be obedient to where he calls us to go,” says Wentz of the AO1 Foundation and its three ministries. “It’s been fun to really see lives being impacted and changed, not only on this earth but also for eternity, and that’s really where the greatest reward has been.”

“That goes around and gives out free food to anybody and everybody, and also talks with people on the streets, shares the gospel and prays with people,” Wentz says of Thy Kingdom Crumb. “Anybody and everybody is welcome. We look forward to that continuing in Philly, but potentially seeing how we can get involved in a similar

Currently living on Indy’s northside, Wentz says he and his family have already grown to love Indianapolis. “We love it out here,” he says. “It’s got

that small-town feel, but it’s definitely a bigger city that has everything you need from restaurants to family activities. There are so many things to do. I think the culture around here and the community atmosphere really fits me and my family perfectly, and we’re excited about it.” As for his inner outdoorsman, Wentz says he looks forward to exploring all of the nature Indiana has to offer as well. “The hunting, fishing and everything around in the countryside out here seems really exciting for me to dabble with, get out there and enjoy,” Wentz says.
