Being a business owner or homeowner is an accomplishment, but it does have a few unglamorous aspects. One unfortunate reality of owning a house or company is that garbage bins get dirty. No matter how careful families or individuals try to be, trash bags tear or leak, and the result is a gunky, smelly mess. Ryan Diem became aware of specialized trucks that tackle the problem and saw the potential for bringing Bin Scrub, a garbage bin cleaning service, to northside Indianapolis. 6 / BROWNSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2021 / TownePost.com
If the name Ryan Diem sounds familiar, it’s because he played for the Indianapolis Colts for 11 seasons during the Peyton Manning era. As an offensive lineman, he was a crucial part in driving the Colts to a 2007 Super Bowl win. During that period, the team’s offensive line was rated as number one in the National Football League. Diem’s football career began at Glenbard North High School in Carol Stream, Illinois. He went on to attend Northern Illinois University where he studied mechanical engineering. He served as captain of the football team and was awarded All American status. During his senior year he was also an Academic All American. In 2001 he was drafted by the Colts and continued to play in Indianapolis until his retirement from football in 2012. “After a career that surpassed my wildest expectations, the stars aligned for my retirement,” Diem says. “It seemed like the right time. My contract was up, Peyton Manning and the Colts leadership had been let go and the team was being dismantled,
plus my wife Julie was pregnant with our twins. I was able to make a nice clean break and walked away with my health. During the years I played for the Colts, my family and I put down roots and made a lot of friendships in Indianapolis. We chose to stay in Zionsville, and we’re happy to be part of the community.” After leaving the Colts, Diem became involved in several business interests in the tech, commercial real estate and sanitation sectors. Bin Scrub is a service business that cleans, sanitizes and deodorizes garbage and recycling bins, and dumpsters for homeowners, neighborhoods, management companies, restaurants, apartments and commercial properties. The company, located on Zionsville Road, fits in well with Diem’s other business interests. “Stuff gets stuck to the bottom of all trash bins,” he says. “The residue is a breeding TownePost.com / AUGUST 2021 / BROWNSBURG MAGAZINE / 7
ground for bacteria and attracts pests such as rodents, flying insects and their larvae. In warm weather it starts smelling. It’s just disgusting. The last thing anyone wants to do is clean them out. I heard about the specialized trucks that take care of the problem and I started pursuing it in 2019. The trucks have a lifting mechanism that turns the bins upside down over high pressure rotating nozzles. The ecofriendly process utilizes extremely hot, 230-degree, high-pressure water to kill germs, clean and sanitize. The wastewater is collected by the truck and all that’s left behind are the clean bins. Each bin is wiped dry and treated with a light odor neutralizer to keep the container smelling fresh. We started cleanings in early 2020 and we are up to three trucks in our fleet.” Residential customers have several different plans to choose from. One-time service is available but prepaid, scheduled options are more cost effective. Prices are listed on the company’s website for monthly, bimonthly and quarterly service, and vary according to the number of bins cleaned. Scheduled cleanings are the most economical choice. The monthly package that includes cleanings of two trash bins 12 times a year costs $279. Bimonthly service for two bins is $169 while quarterly is $129. A one-time cleaning for two bins costs $49.
Customers who buy packages can keep track of their cleaning schedule via the portal on Bin Scrub’s website. After logging in with their username and password, they can make secure payments, view cleaning schedules and keep track of cleaning history. In addition, the friendly office staff is glad to assist customers and answer any of their questions. Diem and his wife have organized and hosted many different fundraisers for pediatric cancer research over the past 15 years. Bin Scrub was involved in their latest effort as a corporate sponsor. This spring, Strike Out Cancer raised more than $70,000 to benefit Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. In the future, Bin Scrub looks forward to giving back to the community by supporting other events.

“We haven’t come across bins that don’t need a cleaning yet,” Diem says. “We are here to help our residential and commercial

NEW QB IN TOWN
GETTING TO KNOW INDIANAPOLIS COLTS QUARTERBACK CARSON WENTZ Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by the Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Carson Wentz has heard the rumors and can confirm - he and Prince Harry are two different people despite their similar looks.
“We’re not the same person,” Wentz says with a laugh. “I hate to break it to some people, but nope.” Traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Indianapolis Colts in March of 2021, Wentz follows in the footsteps of the now-retired Phillip Rivers, who took the Colts to the playoffs in his lone year AUGUST 2021
with the team. Drafted at number two by Philadelphia in the 2016 NFL Draft, Wentz won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017, where he first played under current Colts Head Coach Frank Reich, who served as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator. Although born in Raleigh, North Carolina,
Wentz spent most of his upbringing in North Dakota - a state he still has many ties to today. “Both of my parents are there, and I have a bunch of friends and stuff back there,” Wentz says. “I grew up there, went to high school there and went to college there. North Dakota is definitely home. I love that place and love those people back there.” While Indianapolis may be completely new terrain for him and his family, Wentz at least has a familiar face here in town with Reich. “I loved playing for him as my coach and
loved working together with him as my offensive coordinator,” Wentz says. “We just really got along well off the field and really connected on a deeper level spiritually. I just thought we had a really good thing in Philly working together, so I think we were both mutually excited to get back and work together again.” While Carson, his wife Madison, and their 1-year-old daughter Hadley have been busy settling in, the Indianapolis community has made sure to welcome them with open arms. “The way we’ve been welcomed and embraced has just been really cool, both AUGUST 2021
football-wise from the organization but also in the community,” Wentz says. “It just seems like such a family-friendly environment. Everyone’s rooting for you, pulling for you and wants you to succeed.” When he’s not out on the gridiron, Wentz also stays busy with a nonprofit he started called the Audience of One (AO1) Foundation. A devout Christian, Wentz has tried to use his platform for good since entering the NFL. “When I was a rookie, I knew that my purpose was so much bigger than throwing touchdowns on Sunday,” he says. “Coming to my faith when I was in college, I knew

there was a platform that was different. Lord knows how long I’ll have that platform, so as a rookie I said, ‘Let’s start the foundation. I don’t know how many years I’ll be in this position to have a voice, have eyes on me and make a difference, so while we’ve got it, let’s make the most of it.’ ” The AO1 Foundation consists of three separate ministries according to Wentz. The first of these is called Thy Kingdom Crumb. “That goes around and gives out free food to anybody and everybody, and also talks

with people on the streets, shares the gospel and prays with people,” Wentz says of Thy Kingdom Crumb. “Anybody and everybody is welcome. We look forward to that continuing in Philly, but potentially seeing how we can get involved in a similar fashion out here in the Indianapolis area.”
“It’s just been really cool to see God working through it and for us to be obedient to where he calls us to go,” says Wentz of the AO1 Foundation and its three ministries. “It’s been fun to really see lives being impacted and changed, not only on this earth but also for eternity, and that’s really where the greatest reward has been.”

love Indianapolis. “We love it out here,” he says. “It’s got that small-town feel, but it’s definitely a bigger city that has everything you need from restaurants to family activities. There are so many things to do. I think the culture around here and the community atmosphere really fits me and my family perfectly, and we’re excited about it.” As for his inner outdoorsman, Wentz says he looks forward to exploring all of the nature Indiana has to offer as well. “The hunting, fishing and everything around in the countryside out here seems really exciting for me to dabble with, get out there and enjoy,” Wentz says. 7 WAY S TO P R E P YO U R FA L L WA R D R O B E
Writer / Stephanie Weber Photographer / Collin Weber
looms for at least the next month.
It’s still in the 90s most days, but fall is quickly approaching. August is the month that students go back to school, the football games dominate weekends and stores start to put out their fall styles if they haven’t already.
1. UTILIZE DENIM
Sweaters are probably the farthest thing from your mind, but if you love fall fashion as much as I do, you’re ready to start transitioning. There are a few easy ways to do that even with the summer heat that
Now is the time to add denim to your wardrobe. Stock up on a couple of pairs of new skinnies or boyfriend fit jeans because you’ll be able to wear them through the next couple of seasons. Nordstrom, Madewell, Evereve, and Sweet Olive are my go-to stores to find new AUGUST 2021
denim styles that are comfortable and also on trend for the year. 2. FLANNELS ARE A MUST
You simply can’t go wrong with flannels, especially for fall. Wear tthese now unbuttoned with a tank or graphic tee and your favorite denim shorts. Then when the temperatures drop, layer flannels with a vest paired with booties and your new high-rise skinny jeans. This is the ultimate piece for bonfires and, honestly, if you only add one item to your wardrobe for fall, it should be flannels. 3. PEEP TOE BOOTIES ARE A GOOD WAY TO GO
Right now, it’s a little too warm for booties with socks, at least for me. I’d suggest peep toe booties that will go with almost every outfit. You can wear these with dresses, denim or even shorts. DSW almost always has a great selection and they are my go-to store for shoes. 4. ADD FALL COLORS
It seems this year that fall colors have been on trend since January. We’ve seen mustard and olive for most of the summer, but if you haven’t added them to your wardrobe yet, now is certainly the time. Along with those two hues, purple, navy and burgundy are also a few to add to your shopping list. Try a fall-colored button-up paired with denim shorts and a peep toe bootie. That’s the perfect August look. 5. LAYER UP
As we move into fall, you probably notice that mornings are chilly followed by warm, sunny days and then back into breezy nights again. A light cardigan with a short sleeve floral top and your favorite denim is a good way to go. You can also use flannels as a layering piece. Leather jackets are common as we move into colder temps. But, be careful not to over-layer in a way that looks messy and confusing leaving you with no shape.
AUGUST 2021
6. SANDALS ARE ACCEPTABLE
Utilize those summer sandals as long as you can because your feet won’t see the light of day until at least March. I used to say that “jeans and flip-flop” weather is my favorite and that holds true today. Wear sandals with your favorite jumpsuits, denim or dresses until it’s just too cold. Black or cognac sandals are my suggestion for transitional colors. 7. ADD SOME PRINTS
Leopard is always popular for fall and so is plaid. Bold fall florals are another print to add. Pattern mixing is one of my favorite things to try for fall. I like to mix leopard flats with a plaid top and comfortable denim. Add statement earrings to the look and you’re good to go. These tips are easy ways to make fall clothing work even though it’s still warm outside. It’s best to start transitioning now while the stores are
coming out with those perfect pieces for your family photos at the apple orchard.

WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK FIVE TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR BREASTFEEDING EXPERIENCE
Writer / Jan Record, RN and Lactation Consultant at IU Health West Hospital Photography Provided
GET COMFORTABLE TOGETHER.
World Breastfeeding Week takes place annually during the first week of August, and is an opportunity to bring discussions about breastfeeding to the forefront of people’s minds. We’ve all heard that breastfeeding is advantageous for both babies and moms. From helping to boost a baby’s immune system to creating a strong emotional bond, there are plenty of benefits to consider. However, breastfeeding, like learning any new skill, can take time and patience, especially in the beginning.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR BREASTS.
ASK FOR HELP.
Your hospital’s lactation consultants and maternity nurses are there to support and help you through labor and your breastfeeding journey. Breastfeeding doesn’t always come naturally, and seeking help right away from lactation experts is a good way to ensure both you and your baby get started on a good path. Following your stay in the hospital, look for local breastfeeding support groups with lactation specialists.
POSTPONE PACIFIERS.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends waiting three to four weeks after birth to introduce a pacifier. This will help you and your baby establish a good breastfeeding routine. After the first month, pacifiers are less likely to interfere with breastfeeding.
Make sure your arms and your baby are supported during feedings. Use pillows to support your arms and make yourself comfortable. Having skin-to-skin contact with your baby immediately after birth, and as much as possible during the first few weeks, creates an emotional bond that helps with breastfeeding success. Remember, you and your baby are learning about this process together.
The skin of your breasts is very delicate and sensitive. Proper latch is important in preventing nipple trauma and soreness. Avoid using soap on your nipples, to prevent dryness and irritation. Putting a drop of your colostrum or milk onto your nipples after nursing will also help to prevent dryness. You can also use a medical-grade lanolin. If your baby has a little trouble mastering the skill of latching at first, hydrogel pads are also great for soothing sore nipples. Keep trying - it will get easier with practice.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.
While taking care of your baby, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated and resting as much as possible will help keep your energy up.

Whether you are buying, selling, or staying in your home, here are a few local real estate trends you need to know to help you navigate the current housing market. The market is still skinny on home options for Buyers. This means that buyers who are not fatigued by frequently submitting offers (but not winning) on homes are adjusting their list of “needs" and "wants" in every regard (desired size, location, price point, location). Given this, it is a fantastic time to sell a home without “needing’ to update everything (but updating will continue to help increase the value). If you do decide to sell, heed the buyers' struggle noted above. Low interest rates continue to be a solid inspiration point for buyers. Who knew we would still be seeing rates under 4%? Years ago, this meant that a buyer could get more house for their money, but with unprecedented home prices this is no longer the case. It is extremely important for buyers to establish a budget and not get carried into a bidding whirlwind that leaves them cash poor the day
they enter their new home. Sellers are lucky to be presented with multiple offers from well qualified buyers - making your parents right once again when they told you to save for a larger down payment. What if you intend to stay in your home but want to make improvements? The goal should always be to do the best job you can and get the best help, but many contractors are completely overwhelmed making this more difficult to accomplish. A new trend that I love is friends coming together to create "fix-itpods." These pods travel from home to home to complete an item on each friend’s to-do list (building shelves, cabinets, painting, and more). Each person in the group commits to working through each project with the expectation being that their projects will get completed as well. This is super smart and a really great way to help each other out and build community! Claire-Ann is a West Side Realtor helping people make Hendricks County their home. O
livia Head isn’t an average teenager, and she has no problem admitting it.
“I actually have no free time,” the 18-yearold says. “I unregrettably exchanged the typical teenage lifestyle for what I do.” Head runs Oinking Acres Farm Rescue and Sanctuary in Brownsburg, where her mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home potbellied pigs and other farm
animals. Since 2017 she has rescued 256 neglected, unwanted and abandoned animals. She has taken in cows, goats, sheep, ducks, chickens and peafowl. Currently on her farm, she houses 65 pigs and a menagerie of other farm animals. Her entire day revolves around providing the best care she can for them, whether that’s medicated baths, washing their bedding, or meeting their physical needs the best she can.
Her love of animals comes honestly. She grew up on a 36-acre farm. Her father is a hay farmer, and was even a rodeo cowboy back in the day. Her mother was always very involved with rescuing dogs and cats. In fact, in nearly every picture from her childhood, Head is with her mom and some sort of animal. Head’s favorite photo is of her as a 1-year-old sitting in a cat crate with a mama cat and her kittens, petting them gently. While many kids love having a dog or cat
for a pet, Head loved her mother’s pigs, whose names were Pixie and Penelope. She tells the story of how her mom was at a flea market 25 years ago, watching some rambunctious kids squeezing a piglet, wanting to take it home. The children’s mother was about to purchase the pig, but Head’s mom whipped out cash, paid the woman, and snatched up the pig to take her home, naming her Penelope. “My mom was always into broken and decrepit animals,” Head says. “I’m the same. 28 / BROWNSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2021 / TownePost.com
I’ll take the broken and infirm all day long.” Head was 14 years old when Penelope passed away. She told her mom she wanted another pig. Her mother, adamantly against purchasing animals in favor of rescuing them, encouraged Head to do some research. In her research, Head found something disturbing. Many breeders were advertising teacup pigs - tiny pigs people could tote
around or dress up. The problem was there is no such thing as teacup pigs, and those who buy them are upset to find they actually can grow up to 150 pounds or more. “Breeders swindle people,” Head says. “It’s like purchasing a Great Dane puppy and expecting it to stay the size of a chihuahua. These breeders overpopulate the market with pigs to make a quick buck. They market that the pigs will stay small and not weigh more than 50 pounds, and that’s a lie.”
As she learned more, she stumbled across A Critter’s Chance, an exotic-animal rescue organization in Hendricks County. There was one pig up for adoption whose name happened to be Penelope. Head immediately applied to adopt her and took her home as a project pig. “She was the first animal I really got to work with,” Head says. “She had never had any training or socialization, and she was very skittish and scared.” Head worked with her for almost a year, learning more about pigs than she ever thought possible. “It’s mind-blowing how intelligent and emotional they are,” Head says. “I fell in love with everything about them.” She began volunteering at A Critter’s Chance and fostering pigs whenever she could. Soon even that wasn’t enough for her, and the house she lived in wasn’t big enough for the amount of animals she wanted to help. Toward the end of 2018, she began the transition to her farm in Brownsburg. She slowly began to clean up her father’s former alfalfa hay barn. She was asked to join the board of A Critter’s Chance as a junior member. At the age of 16 she established her own 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and Oinking Acres was in full swing. Many may wonder how she has had time to help these animals and still keep up in school, but Head has arranged her life around her beloved animals, finishing high school through an online program at Ben Davis High School. “There’s such a cookie-cutter mold nowadays as far as what’s expected of kids,” Head says. “Why would you want to be like everyone else? As far as free time, I spend it all here. My entire existence revolves around meeting the needs of all the animals that are in my care.” Even when she isn’t looking, Head finds animals who need her. Recently she stopped into a local farm supply store, steeling herself TownePost.com / AUGUST 2021 / BROWNSBURG MAGAZINE / 29
against looking at the chicks and ducklings. Unable to resist, she finally looked and noticed a duckling who couldn’t walk because of a deformed leg. She asked the manager if she could take him home. Now, Flipper resides with a foster family alongside another disabled duckling named Finn. In fact, that foster family includes a veterinary technician, who is a friend of Head’s and a fellow animal rescuer. “We’re doing some cold laser treatments and physical therapy to correct Flipper’s deformities,” Head says.
continuing her outreach and education on a larger scale. She’d love to add a bathroom, a medical room and a laundry room. She operates on donations and proceeds from charity events, with help from volunteers and the steadfast support of her mother and siblings, who come twice per day to help around the farm. Head offers tours of her farm on the weekends for a small donation, determined to educate the public on pigs and animal care.
Head is well aware that she couldn’t do what she does without the farm she was raised on. When her parents had their third child, they decided to sell their farm, but because of the real estate crash in the early 2000s, they weren’t able to sell all of it. They parceled off the house and front yard, leaving the barns and back fields. Now, more than 10 years later, that’s where Head runs her pig rescue, right on the land where she grew up. “If my parents had sold it, I’d never be able to do this,” Head says. “It’s crazy how over a decade later, things come full circle. Sometimes it’s hard to find contentment with how things turn out, but it’s a reminder to just bloom where you’re planted, take it day by day, and let the story unfold. I believe everything happens for a reason.” Aside from caring for her animals, Head is passionate about education. She has a laser focus on the image she puts out of her animals on social media, wanting to depict them as the beautiful creatures God made them to be, rather than how their stigma in society portrays them. “Pigs in general carry a negative connotation in society,” Head says. “They actually are smart, clean, and deserving of love, care and attention. I try and capture them at their very best so hopefully people can see beyond the stigma.” Head has plans to grow her impact and outreach, wanting to expand her rescue and 30 / BROWNSBURG MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2021 / TownePost.com
“Being in rescue is mentally, emotionally and physically draining,” Head says. “At the same time, there’s nothing more rewarding than taking in this broken and hopeless little animal and rehabilitating it to the point where it is ready for adoption, helping them bloom into the amazing animal God created them to be. If you want to change the world, you have to start right where you are.” For more information or to schedule a tour, visit oinkingacres.org.
