NEW ACTIVITY?

With the hot summer days comes a slight tendency to desire her to come to an end. Fall brings such a welcome relief to Indiana gardeners. It is the most glorious season for Hoosiers, what with the fall color and fun autumn weekends with tailgates and bonfires. If autumn were a family member, she would most certainly be your mom. She is beautiful, full of activity, brings a wonderful harvest to the family dinner table and swift to teach us to prepare for the future seasons to come!

Autumn rains and chilly nights bring on a quick shift in the amount of time left to complete our many outdoor tasks before the hustle of the holiday season begins. This is the time to pack it up, folks! Putting

the garden to ‘bed’ for a long winter’s nap is important to her health and important to the abundance of success for the following spring growing season.

Remove any plant foliage that has gone to seed and died back, if left in the garden it will create disease and fungus. No one likes fungus among us! Mulch over any tender perennials so that the winter’s freezing and thawing won’t make the root balls of the plants heave up close to the surface, which then allows them to freeze and die.

One of my favorite tasks is planting an abundance of spring flowering bulbs, do you know why? Because I constantly forget what I have planted and where, then when spring comes it is a wonderful surprise. dedicate this month’s issue to women-owned businesses in and around Hendricks County. We recently talked with a number of Hendricks County women business owners to ask them about their accomplishments, collaborations, challenges and favorite memories, as well as advice they would share with others. We are grateful to have so many intelligent, talented, driven women at the helm of these businesses.

A: Watching our students at first struggle but then succeed and grow is one of our greatest rewards as business owners. Many times our students enter with low confidence, but as they improve in their math abilities, we see their confidence begin to grow. When students light up and get that aha moment, it makes everything we do worthwhile. At Mathnasium we get to celebrate those moments on a regular basis, and the confidence they grow at Mathnasium will help them in all aspects of life.

our communities. It’s meant to be shared and appreciated. Art brings people together. It’s a positive thing. We live in a time when young people are coming out of a COVID world and are under a lot of stress. They need the organic, hands-on arts more than ever to be healthy individuals. Knowing that I’m helping young people develop self-esteem by learning the craft of studio art or music excites me every day. It’s the heart of my business.

A: I get a great deal of fulfillment out of seeing young people discover their inner artist and develop their self-esteem. I love seeing that spark that comes from accomplishment. I have been teaching fine arts for more than 34 years, and whether it’s music, dance or visual art, the creative arts are engaging and leave students mentally and physically motivated to move forward in their lives. Color, tone and movement cannot be substituted by any other activity. With each creation or performance, the artist can stand back and be grateful for a sense of accomplishment and have the motivation to create the next Additionally, project.fine art doesn’t just benefit the creator. Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Jennifer Wharton, Avon

A: In the first few months of dental school, we had a required ethics lecture to attend, and the best piece of advice I’ve ever been given came from that day. They said the difference between good and great usually isn’t very much.

Q:HealthMental

A: Mental health had become stifled until recent years, but due to the pandemic, mental health took on a transformation.historical The barriers that once surrounded mental health are being dismantled at an accelerated rate. Stigma and misconceptions are now replaced with more understanding and acceptance. Whether in the workplace, school, church or the community, mental health has seen increased awareness through all sorts of digital and social media platforms. Even the government has prioritized mental health with expanded mental-health coverage and awareness campaigns. Through restructuring the way care is provided, we have witnessed how mental health, once hospital-based care, transformed into a community-based care system. Expanded services through online formats and community-based programs have improved access to care for anyone struggling with mental-health concerns.

Honestly, I don’t think any description I can give will successfully detail how frequently these words cross my mind. While it is often tempting to stop at “good enough,” sometimes it is just an extra two minutes, or a little bit of hard work or ingenuity, that will result in great work, of which you can be very proud. Not only does it make you proud, but in many cases, that extra effort benefits those around you - in my case, my patients. As I work to polish a filling or to adjust a person’s bite, it is easy to say, “This is acceptable,” and so much more satisfying to give that little bit extra. This advice pushes me to be better every day, encourages me not to be stagnant in my learning, and has helped grow my empathy for those I meet.

Dr. Vicki

What has been the biggest hurdle or challenge you have faced in your career?

Dr. Shannon L. Austin, Au.D., SLA

Q: What is the secret sauce that you use to work collaboratively and effectively with others?

A: I’m originally from Sullivan, Indiana, but in 2002 my family and I made Brownsburg our home. In June of 2021, after an 18-year career in multiple areas of audiology, I opened SLA Audiology, an independently owned private practice and hearing health-care clinic in Brownsburg.

Brynn

Stephanie Yant, Cabin Coffee Co.

Hearing loss can lead to frustration and isolation. Navigating the right options for treatment can be overwhelming and this can cause considerable delays in getting help. Because of that, professional and individualized hearing care have always been my passion in audiology. Establishing SLA Audiology’s reputation as a trusted resource to our patients and the community we share is my favorite thing about living and working in Hendricks County. Caring for the whole patient with the highest standard of care is SLA Audiology’s differentiator, and we enjoy changing the expectation of what hearing health care should be.

Q:Audiology

A: I’d have to saymyself. Whether it’s feeling inadequate or struggling with comparison, I am always trying to train myself to not allow such things to hold me back. I’ve come to realize that I am my own worst enemy. Realizing this years ago has allowed me to jump over some high hurdles and face challenges with grace and strength.

and choose if they want to make the changes necessary. They also need to know what they are doing right, and for me that all takes intentionality.

A: For me, chiropractic has never just been about working on the back. There are plenty of other adjunctive modalities to help maintain a painfree life, which is a focus in my practice. This is one big reason I added acupuncture to my practice years ago. More recently I’ve seen a need to go back to school and study functional medicine. Finding the root cause of symptoms integrates perfectly with both chiropractic and acupuncture.

Q:ChiropracticCommunityCrum,

A: The secret sauce is intentionality. As leaders, we may think to ourselves that an employee is not meeting our expectations and we are frustrated, but the employee is unaware. We all want to be liked and we don’t want to offend others, so it is easier to keep our frustrations to ourselves and not voice them. My mindset is that it is actually unfair to not tell them if I am unhappy with their work. It is selfishly easier to not address wrong behavior, but every person deserves the chance to know what they can do to be better

What’s your favorite thing about living and working in Hendricks County?

A: We love being able to give back to the community that has blessed our business over the past 24 years. We love sponsoring kid events like sport teams, Avon schools, and programs at our church, along with various projects put on by the Washington Township Avon Fire Department, Kiwanis and Rotary Club, to name a few. One of our favorites was fixing up a vehicle in partnership with Recycled Rides to give to Family Promise for a family in need. God’s been so good, and we feel privileged to be able to share that blessing with those around us.

How has your industry decadethroughoutevolvedthepastortwo?

A: In the real-estate industry we have evolved over the last several years drastically in technology. It wasn’t that long ago we had listing books, driving keys around, handwritten contracts and minimal printed advertising. Today we are very fortunate to have access to most everything because of the internet at our fingertips. Mobile apps, digital signing, electronic lockboxes and social media marketing allow us to do things at a much faster pace than ever before. Time frames that used to be several days now have been shortened to just a few hours.

A: The best piece of advice I have ever been given is from a mentor that said, “Your name is all you have in this business. Make it a good one.” Every day I think about this and try to make the best choices to uphold my name, values and reputation.

A: One of my favorite memories was helping a traumatic brain injury patient. She had been suffering with severe light sensitivity, migraines, dizziness, double vision, and was unable to drive for approximately one year after being in a car accident. It was really limiting her everyday functioning, and she wouldn’t even really go outdoors because the sun bothered her too much. I researched how best to help her with special rose-tinted lenses and prisms in her glasses. She had the largest smile on her face when she picked up her new glasses. I saw her a couple weeks later, and she told me that she had been out shopping with her sister and was already starting to slowly reacclimate to driving. New specialty glasses were life-changing for her.

SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT

As a child, Kristi Lee had no aspirations to work in radio. In fact, the only reason she signed up for a radio class was because a classmate at Ben Davis High School suggested she do so. That one decision altered the trajectory of her life.

She began working part time on nights and weekends in 1982 at Q95, finishing her shift at 6 a.m., when “The Bob & Tom Show,” a top-rated morning program, was starting. When they decided to hire a news girl in 1987, Lee was the perfect choice, as she liked to banter with them as they chatted between their shifts. That was 35 years ago and she’s still going strong. Lee says she feels blessed.

In addition to her vast body of work, the Hall of Fame honor acknowledges her commitment to community involvement. She’s on the board at Ascension St. Vincent Foundation and the Indianapolis Zoo, she volunteers at Second Helpings, she’s participated in countless golf outings, and she has hosted events for charity galas. “It’s hard for me to say no,” she says.

Through the years she’s worked every shift imaginable. In her 20s she enjoyed working from 4 p.m. to midnight, because she could go straight from work to Broad Ripple to socialize. Working mornings, however, gave her time with her children in the evenings. Not that rising at 4 a.m. is always fun.

For a while she worked full-time at “The Bob & Tom Show,” then traveled on the weekends for ESPN, catching a flight to the east coast on Friday as soon as she got off the air and returning on Sunday. For two years, Lee also hosted a podcast called “Kristi Lee Uninterrupted.” Born with an unfailing work ethic, she worked seven days a week, including holidays, until her two children were born (they are now 24 and “A20).lot

Lee also got to meet - and befriend - her teenage idol, Peter Frampton.

“He was one of the first concerts I ever saw,” she says. “I was 16 years old at Balboa Park in San Diego, and I fell in love with him the minute he walked on stage. Now we have each other’s phone numbers. We both have goldendoodles so we get them together to play sometimes. The fact that I can call Peter a friend is mind-blowing to me.”

“During the break, Dolly was brainstorming baby names with me,” Lee says. “She was so sweet and acted like she’d known me my whole life.”

In her free time Lee likes to read, garden, golf, travel and practice Pilates. Though she openly admits that she can’t cook worth a darn, she’s proud of her accomplishments and grateful for the life she’s “Honestly, lived.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

More imaging may be needed. If a mammogram is abnormal, extra imaging may be needed. Typically a doctor will order a diagnostic mammogram if unusual changes are detected in the breast, such as a lump, breast pain, change in breast size or shape, and nipple discharge. Diagnostic mammograms will provide the radiologist with more detailed views of the breast to help determine if cancer is present. A breast ultrasound may also be used in combination with a mammogram to further work up a breast finding.

determine if a suspicious finding is cancer. This is most commonly performed by a needle. With a needle biopsy, a small sample of breast tissue is removed through the needle. Often a small biopsy clip may be placed to mark the area where the sample was taken in the breast, for future reference. The biopsy process should not be painful. Most doctors will use a local anesthetic to numb the area. Sometimes women may have some bruising afterwards.

The patient may undergo additional tests. After an abnormal mammogram, the doctor may order a breast biopsy. A biopsy is the removal and sampling of breast tissue to

Mammograms are vital to the health and longevity of you and your loved ones. Early detection of breast cancer can increase a woman’s five-year survival rate to 97%. Breast cancer is typically discovered through a mammogram or felt as a lump. If your mammogram comes back as abnormal, there are certain steps you can expect to determine your best options.

Discuss your surgical options. Should your biopsy results show cancer, you will likely require further treatment. Your breast cancer physician will work with you to identify a treatment plan that is best for you. Your physician will explain all the treatment options available for your specific diagnosis, and based on those results along with your personal preferences, will decide on a treatment plan with you. This could include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormone therapy. When to begin treatment is based on the results of your specific breast cancer, and your personal preferences. When you and your physician identify the best treatment plan, you will also decide on when to begin implementing the plan.

UNDERSTANDING AN ABNORMAL MAMMOGRAM

If you notice an abnormality in your breast, don’t wait. Discuss it with your physician right away.

Sacrifice for Freedom: World War II in the Pacific Student & Teacher Institute invited 16 student-teacher teams to study World War II in the Pacific on-site in Honolulu, Hawaii, from July 24 to 31, 2022. Crone and Freeman were ecstatic to partake in something so special.

This past summer, teachers and students from Indiana, North Carolina, Texas, Colorado, Utah, Michigan, Iowa, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, Hawaii, Guam and Singapore met in Honolulu for a special deep dive into history that went well beyond what a typical tourist gets to experience. For example, they visited the Bishop Museum (essentially the “Hawaii Smithsonian”) to learn about Hawaiian culture. The group also went to the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.

Another highlight was touring the Defense Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency, a place that rarely gives public tours. This is where forensic anthropologists collect bones from those missing in action since World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War and try to put the bodies back together so they can send them home. The main lab holds 50 to 60 tables of remains that staff is currently trying to

USS Missouri, the ship where Japan surrendered during World War II, was “Wesurreal.werein a turret and got to sit in a controlroom chair,” Freeman says, noting that it was the room where the movie “Battleship” was filmed. “It was cool to learn facts about the USS Missouri while being on it.” They saw how torpedoes were loaded, got to use Morse

December 7,” Crone says.

At the USS Arizona memorial, every student and teacher was given a piece of lei to drop into the water around the USS Crone,Missouri.Freeman and the others participating in Sacrifice for Freedom ate dinner in the USS Missouri’s cafeteria and then had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend the night aboard the ship. It wasn’t swanky, of course.

Pearl Harbor was also enlightening as the group got private, behind-the-scenes tours led by museum directors. They heard about how December 7, 1941, unfolded, second by second. One of the most surprising facts they learned was that the USS Utah was the first ship to be destroyed during the Pearl Harbor attack. It had all of their antiaircraft artillery on it so when it was demolished, the United States didn’t have adequate defenses.

The tour guide talked about commingling because when bodies were being collected, they were in mass graves and bones were mixed up. They never close a case because there’s always new technology being developed that will help them continue to search for other soldiers. They even have an entire underwater archeology

“To finally give a voice to our silent heroes was phenomenal,” Freeman says.

“It really puts everything into perspective because a lot of these service members were just three to five years older than I am,” she says. “History is so important to understanding the sacrifices that were made. It’s important to know what surrounds you and why it surrounds you, so that moving forward you can make the world better.”

Prior to the trip, each student had researched a service member from their state who was either memorialized or buried at Punchbowl Cemetery in Honolulu. Freeman studied Steward Third Class Vernon Kirk, an African American member of the United States Navy during World War II. Born and raised in Mount Vernon, Indiana, by Henry Augustus Kirk and Annabelle Kirk, in October of 1942 the 19-year-old enlisted in the Navy. As a submariner, Kirk spent his time on the USS Snapper and the USS Swordfish. He was tasked with making sure the officers and vessels were combat-ready.

13th and final patrol. The USS Swordfish acknowledged orders on January 3, 1945, but that was the last time she was ever heard from. By February 15, 1945, radio contact with the USS Swordfish was confirmed as lost. It’s hard to determine what happened to the USS Swordfish and her crew, but records indicate that while preparing for the Battle of Okinawa, she was sunk somewhere in the nearby waters due to a mine in the water, taking 89 men, including Steward Kirk, to the bottom of the ocean. Both Kirk (21 years old) and his crewmates’ confirmed date of death is January 12, 1945. For his sacrifice, Kirk was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.

Crone and Freeman found Steward Kirk’s name on the “eternal patrol list.” It’s inscribed

Sleeping quarters were tight, the bunks were incredibly small, and the bathrooms were down the hall and up a ladder. Nevertheless, Freeman slept soundly, then awoke early to watch the sunrise.

It doesn’t take much time. Mammograms are a quick procedure, only taking about 20 minutes.

Your risk of developing breast cancer increases as you age. The older you get, the more you are at risk of developing breast cancer. That’s why mammograms aren’t a one-and-done test.

Mammograms are vital to your health and longevity as a woman. Indiana University Health recommends routine screening mammography to improve the likelihood of detecting breast cancer early.
