Hamilton County Marketplace Comes to Town of snow, people were bundled in winter coats and the temperature was a whopping 10 degrees. No, it wasn’t the fair; the Hamilton County Marketplace had come to town. Brainchild of vendors Brad Cook, Jeff Zeckel (both of Noblesville) and Susan Brooks of Atlanta, the concept of the Hamilton County Marketplace was birthed out of necessity. “We needed to provide a venue for like-minded individuals who were busy selling their wares throughout the summer months, but didn’t have a wintertime option,” said Cook. Cook (who owns Brad Cook Art), Brooks (who owns Dip Stix) and Zeckel (who owns Zeck’s BBQ), contracted with the fairgrounds for six days each year for the next two years.

The first event was held on January 2 and started early as a wide variety of vendors, all hand-picked by the three, packed into the exhibition hall and set up shop for the day. A large crowd of shoppers moved from booth to booth finding some of their favorite products from the summer festivals and farmers’ markets: food, jewelry, accessories, books, woodworking, body products, art and photography. Cook has had such an overwhelming response from vendors that they currently have a waiting list for the jewelry, candle making and handbags categories. Their 71 booth spots sold out for January, and the majority of the vendors signed up for all six months.

also do a service for us by providing the people on the door so the three of us can man our booths.” Each month a different not-for-profit from various communities in the county will be set up in the entryway to collect the $1 entry fee. The organizations get to keep these proceeds and may also receive other donations throughout the day. Chaucie’s Place, a child advocacy center in Carmel, benefited from the January Marketplace. Executive Director Ginger Kadlec was thrilled by the support. Since their doors opened in 2001, Kadlec says Chaucie’s Place has helped interview over 2,400 children who were victims of abuse. All told, $1,400 was donated to Chaucie’s Place on Saturday. We were really pleased with the outcome of that,” said Kadlec. “In addition to the donations, we also received the names of some people who were interested in volunteering … one person is now volunteering as a body safety instructor. We were really honored to have been invited by the coordinating committee,” she said.
Ultimately, Cook rates the first marketplace a success. Plans are in the works to possibly expand the space. “We are so encouraged that we’re looking to accommodate with additional space,” said Cook. Instead of turning all the vendors down or putting them on a waiting list, we’d like to figure out a way to get them in there.” And if the interest generated on this frigid January day is any indication, February’s show will be packed.
Overall, Saturday’s shoppers were a happy crowd; happy to see some of their favorite summer products and happy to be out and about on a cold winter day. Brenda and Judy Bush of Sheridan, and Judy May of Indianapolis stopped by the Little C’s Arts & Things booth while May purchased a beautiful handmade alpaca coat. “We’ve had cabin fever,” said Brenda Bush. “We’ve been inside for three days.” Sandy Schleeter, visiting from Georgia, and Karen Sherman and Charlene Moreillon of Noblesville, saw the Marketplace on a TV newscast that morning and headed over. “We decided to do this as our ‘chick trip,’” laughed Moreillon. Many of the shoppers were excited about their finds. Judy Poe of Noblesville was thrilled with her nostalgic purchase, an art print of the old Rainbow Roller Rink in Noblesville from Brad Cook Art. “My kids spent three days a week there,” she said. Poe’s daughter Kim Harris agreed with her mother remembering her skating days “doing the shuffle.”

Surgery Surprises

I have always been pretty healthy, and my hospital experience has been limited to the labor and delivery of my three kids. I’ve never even had a cavity, let alone major surgery, so when I entered the hospital early on the morning of December 7 to undergo bilateral mastectomies, there were some surprises. My six-hour surgery was deemed a success after pathology came back that all of the cancer had been removed. That information provided a great deal of relief, and has allowed me to look back at the surgery surprises and laugh a bit about the experience. Because of this, I decided to write a list of “The Things Nobody Tells You About
Major Surgery That You Should Know.” Cancer Patient Walking: My first big shock of the day came when the nurse came to take me to the OR for surgery, and she MADE ME WALK THERE! In the movies they always show the patient being wheeled on a gurney down the hall while their loved ones hold their hands and profess their never-ending devotion to the patient. My experience was more like a scene out of “The Green Mile.” All I needed was Tom Hanks marching behind me yelling, “Cancer patient walking!” while I shuffled off in my sad little blue gown and green surgical socks. Also, I’m blind as a bat and they took away my glasses, so I couldn’t see where I was going and I almost ran down my surgeon when I walked full steam into the OR. The final insult: they made me hop up on the operating table myself! After all that, I half expected them to ask me to hold the clamps for them during surgery. I Need a Java Drip STAT!: It is a well known fact that you are not allowed to eat or drink after midnight the day of your surgery, so that was not a shock. But I’m a two-cup a morning girl, and I wasn’t prepared for the reality that by the time I finally walked into the OR I would be experiencing serious caffeine withdrawal. Finally the anesthesiologist announced that he was about to give me some drugs to put me to sleep, and the java-deprived crank living inside me spoke up and said, “It’s about damn time!” I thought my surgeon, who had been loyally standing by me, was going to fall over from laughing, and he told me later he’d never had a patient say that before. I may have to mainline a latte before my next procedure. The Cuckoo’s Nest: When I woke up after surgery in the recovery room, I was shocked to find that I wasn’t the only patient there. Nobody warned me that I would be sharing such a bizarre time with complete strangers. I was still without my glasses, drifting in and out of consciousness, which only added to the Twilight Zone experience. I could hear moaning and groaning and nurses trying to restrain patients who were trying to get up and leave. When I heard a woman scream from the other side of the room, “I just can’t take it anymore!” I considered the possibility that I had been accidentally routed to the psych ward (although in my head I responded to her, “I hear you sister!”). I foolishly thought a recovery area would be a quiet, calm, and private place where you could peacefully transfer out of anesthesia to consciousness, but I found out the hard way “Recovery Room” is actually hospital code for “Holding Cell.” It’s Not as Bad as You Think: Even though I wasn’t prepared for all the surprises waiting for me during surgery,

I had prepared myself for this to be a horrible experience, and that it wasn’t turned out to be the last, and best, surprise. I was blessed with gifted physicians who worked hard to leave me with as little physical and emotional scars as possible. I had amazing nurses who took great care of me, and did so while allowing me to hang on to my dignity. And due to the love and support I received from my family and friends, I never for one single moment felt alone. Having a mastectomy is not an experience I would wish upon my worst enemy, but I would gladly tell anyone facing this surgery this, “It’s not as bad as you think.” Every day I get a little stronger, and a little more ready to face the next challenge. Every day the strange and painful memory of my surgery fades a bit, and I am confident that in time all that will remain will be that feeling of love. Well, that and the memory of the other crazy lady in recovery.

A Close Call Convinced he was doing better, Kevin did not call 911. He eventually let his sister drive him to the emergency department at St.Vincent Medical Center Northeast, which was only five minutes away. Routine cardiac test results appeared normal. However, his emergency physician insisted on performing one more test — the computed tomography $99 HeartScan — to see if an aortic tear caused Kevin’s symptoms.

Carmel Goes Green, One Teen at a Time
By Jennifer Alderman So often, big ideas are born from small places, and sometimes a fresh set of minds can create new ideas from old dilemmas. Such is the case of Carmel Green Teen, an organization dedicated to “Making Carmel greener, one youth project at a time.” When Lauren Gibson was in the fifth grade, she wrote a report on polar bears and how climate changes were affecting these animals. The report awakened Lauren’s consciousness of environmental issues, and two years ago she attended a presentation at Purdue University given by famed anthropologist Jane Goodall. During her presentation, Goodall encouraged the kids in the audience to help her save the planet by joining her Roots & Shoots youth program to help people, animals, and the environment.

“She said that the youth were the hope and future of the world, and if we wanted to make a difference we needed to start working now. She identified climate change as the big problem for my generation, and told us it was our job now to help the environment, “says Gibson, now a freshman at Carmel High School. Gibson took Goodall’s words to heart, and when she returned home she gathered a few of her friends and organized Carmel Area Roots & Shoots program. This group Carmel Community Newsletter
completed many small projects, including removing trash from Cool Creek and collecting food for local food pantries. In 2008, Lauren and her mother were shopping in a local Marsh grocery store when they saw a flyer for the Clorox Green Works $10,000 Green Heroes grant contest. After deciding to enter the contest, Gibson’s Roots & Shoots group spent time brainstorming different ideas for projects worthy of the $10,000 prize for a youth-driven green project. Gibson says, “Some of our ideas were great, but they were too small for a $10,000 budget.” Other suggestions, such as buying recycling bins for Carmel parks, had potential, but the group lacked the authority to install such a project and no means to maintain the bins. Then the group struck gold with the idea of creating a mini-foundation that would break the money into small grants that would be awarded to local youth-led green initiatives.
“We were so excited about winning and having the money available to fund projects in the community, but it was a learning experience to figure out how to award grant money,” comments Gibson. “We were so lucky to have the help of the United Way.” By utilizing the grant process and forms established by the United Way, the group (Continues)
The group submitted their idea for the Carmel Green Teen Micro-Grant Program to the Clorox contest and then waited. After receiving word that they had been chosen among the entries as a top-ten finalist, the group had to rally support from the community to vote online, and on Earth Day 2009, the group was informed that they had been chosen one of five national winners.

Five worthy projects were selected from the submissions, and the winning groups received their grants during an awards ceremony on November 12, 2009 held in Carmel Civic Square. Gibson had a tough time identifying a favorite project. “All of the groups were great,” she says. “But the Cub Scouts were all so excited about their grant money and so passionate about the projects they had planned, it was fun to see.” The first project from the fall grants has been completed. Planting beds for an organic community garden were built December 5, 2009 at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Carmel and will be ready for spring 2010 planting. Fueled by the enthusiasm of the fall grant recipients, Carmel Green Teen is currently reviewing applications for spring projects. When asked what the group looks for when considering grant applicants, Gibson replied, “The most important element is that the

ideas are youth-driven. We want to see that the group is passionate about the project they are proposing, and that they have the ability to follow through and complete the plan.” The deadline for spring applications is February 28, 2010. After awarding the next round of grants, Gibson and her group hope to continue the process until the Green Works prize money is exhausted. The group has no current plans to attempt any additional fundraising as previous efforts have been less successful in raising significant funds, but Gibson states that the group is always open to donations from interested parties. In a few short years, Gibson will be graduating from Carmel High School and moving on to pursue her goal of becoming a polar bear field scientist, and her hope is that the Green Teen group lives on after she is gone. “Hopefully someone will take leadership and continue what we’re doing. We would be more than happy to share what we have learned about the grant process with anyone interested in continuing the Carmel Roots & Shoots or Green Teen.” Beyond continuing the programs, Gibson feels confident about the lasting impact of Carmel Green Teen. As she wrote in an application for a youth environment award the group plans to apply for, “Through this program we have the opportunity to help other kids have the power to make a difference. This will have a lasting effect on the environment, students and our entire community.” When accepting a $650 micro-grant award on behalf of his Cub Scout Pack, Sam Whittman was quoted as saying, “A small change made by small people can make a big difference.” By proving funds and encouraging their youth peers, the Carmel Green Teen organization is certainly making a big difference in their world. Old Church New to Carmel: Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church

Beginning in Indianapolis with several families in 1910, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church has grown to over 2,000 members and on Christmas Eve 2008 held their first services in a newly constructed Byzantine Temple in Carmel. I recently had the opportunity to sit down in this truly beautiful structure and talk to the Reverend Anastasios Gounaris. Reverend Gounaris tells me that they have owned the twenty acres of land at the corner of 106th Street and
Shelbourne Road since the late 1990’s. The Reverend tells me that even before he had arrived at Holy Trinity Church there had been talk of relocating the Parish northward from Indianapolis. Reverend Gounaris shared, “The majority of our parishioners had pretty much moved north from where the church was formerly located.” He goes on to say, “There are not a plethora of Orthodox Churches in Indianapolis, we are in the position of having to go to or be closer to where many of our parishioners live.” Holy Trinity is still in the process of getting their feet firmly planted in Carmel, but they are grateful and excited to be a part of the city. They offer many events and resources to the community, most notably GreekFest. The Holy Trinity Parish will be holding the 37th annual GreekFest this coming summer. GreekFest is a time that the community can come together and celebrate diversity and culture. GreekFest has added a rich cultural element to Central Indiana that for many years was lacking. Reverend

This summer’s GreekFest will be the second year it will have been held at their new Carmel location. Last year’s GreekFest was an overwhelming success with the location change, although some may remember traffic jams, long lines, and lack of parking. Reverend Gounaris says they have been working on the logistics of GreekFest so that these problems will be kept to a minimum. The Parish encourages the entire community to come out and celebrate the Greek culture with them at the 37th annual GreekFest this year and in the years to come.
GreekFest is by far not the only thing Holy Trinity Church has to offer. Reverend Gounaris adds, “We welcome all people to not only sit in on our worship, but to participate in the increasing range of activities we are going to be offering in this Parish in the years to come.”
As for the future of GreekFest in Carmel, Reverend Gounaris says, “In the future we definitely want to introduce more activities that are of a cultural nature. We have that now with the food and the dancing, but we’re looking into expanding those offerings so that we can bring in artists and artisans from Greece that do all kinds of things from pottery

Fired Up Over Ladies Night
It is Ladies Night, a weekly affair held at Creative Escape, a paint your own pottery studio which offers fired arts such as pottery, mosaics, glass and silver. Thursdays at Creative Escape are “No kids, no husbands.” Customers are welcome to bring wine, as well as other food and drink. “Ladies Night is a grown up thing,” says Snook, “The idea is for women to come in, kick back, relax, and get a few minutes away for themselves.” If pottery seems secondary to socializing, it is because as the mother of two lively toddlers, Snook understands Ladies Night is more than creative outlet. “Some nights we might have a group come in together to learn a technique,” says Snook. “And sometimes women come in just to hang out and unwind, and that’s fine too.” On this Thursday night, a group of Carmel women who play Bunko together regularly, traded in their dice for glue bottles to learn about fusing glass. When asked to describe the atmosphere at Ladies Night, the words “fun, relaxed, open” crop up regularly among the diverse group of women. While Snook demonstrates how to safely cut colored glass planes into shapes, the group agreed they could choose to spend the evening in a dozen other ways. But group member Mindy Bowman summed it up with, Ladies Night at Creative Escape was time, “To be with friends. Create something. Try something new.”

The air vibrates with creativity and the faint smell of chai latte from a Keurig machine next to the counter. Pausing, Jennifer Snook, owner of Creative Escape Pottery & Mosaic in Carmel, grins and says, “Love, love, love it!”

Sitting next to her, friend Katie Price agreed with this sentiment, saying, “(Ladies Night at the Creative Escape) has a fun atmosphere where you can be creative.
