WELCOME 14,000 ADDITIONAL HOMES TO THE CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER! With our significantly increased circulation beginning this month, we welcome over 14,000 additional homes to the Carmel Community Newsletter. Due to limited circulation previously, many of you may not realize that the Carmel Community Newsletter has been going out to Carmel homes for the past four years. You can now expect to see our magazine appearing in your mailbox during the first week of every month. For those receiving this magazine for the first time, the Carmel Community Newsletter is a member of the TownePost Media, a group of hyper-local magazines covering nine

communities in the Indianapolis area with a combined circulation of more than 130,000 homes. The network began with the launch of the Geist Community Newsletter more than 10 years ago. In addition to the expanded circulation of our newsletter this month, we are also excited about the launch of our brand new monthly Towne Clipper magazine. You will notice the Towne Clipper magazine has been lightly attached to the inside of the Carmel Community Newsletter so that it can be easily removed to provide you with savings coupons you can use at local businesses.

With this January issue we have stories about what to look forward to in 2015 from Carmel civic leaders including Mayor Jim Brainard, President and CEO of the Center for the Performing Arts and The Great American Songbook Foundation Tania Castroverde Moskalenko and Superintendent of Carmel Clay Schools Dr. Nicholas Wahl. As you can see from these stories it should be an exciting year in Carmel, and we are so pleased to bring the Carmel Community Newsletter to so many more Carmel residents this year.

ndianapolis metro communities are flled with history and historic buildings. In downtown Franklin, there is a building dating back to 1915 when it was an auto dealership. Afer time it fell into complete disrepair, but afer much work, the building received a national award for its restoration. In 2012, resident Cori Brown wanted to start a business and saw the old building, close to the courthouse, as an ideal location and an opportunity to breathe new life into the Johnson County seat. It took Cori and her husband Scot – owner of the Brown Remodeling Company – a year to bring the building back to life. Teir work received national recognition in November when Window & Door magazine, the authority on the most innovative and trending window and door products on the market, named Franklin Window & Door “2014 Dealer of the Year: Excellence in Showroom Design.” As a highlight of the downtown revitalization efort, Franklin Window and Door is a warm, welcoming and elegant space. “Restoring the building was no simple task,” Cori says. Reconstruction included raising the southwest corner of the building four inches. Te original pressed metal ceiling was uncovered and restored. Te interior restoration includes wooden beams from a local 1800s era barn and the entire front façade was rebricked. Window & Door quotes Krista Linke, the director of community development for the city of Franklin as saying, “What [Cori Brown] did with that building was just amazing. It was one of our worst buildings downtown. Tey basically rebuilt it and made it historically appropriate. It’s a great example of the kind of work we want to see take place.”

BRANCHING OUT: INDIANA VEIN SPECIALISTS

Writer / Janelle Morrison

Dr. Jeffery Schoonover, Diplomate, American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine, was one of the first physicians in the nation to be certified by this board in 2008. As a venous and lymphatic medicine specialist, Dr. Schoonover is dedicated to treating varicose vein disease and related disorders. He and his team at Indiana Vein Specialists are committed to providing minimally invasive treatment of venous

disease while caring for their patients as if they are members of the family. After graduating from Michigan State University, Dr. Schoonover served as a physician for four years in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of major. Following his time in the Air Force, he went into private practice as a family physician. “I obtained additional training in varicose vein treatment because I found working with my patients with chronic

venous insufficiency or vein disease to be challenging,” Dr. Schoonover explained. “They had long-term swelling, chronic issues and some had wounds that wouldn’t heal.” Approximately 40 million Americans are affected by vein disease. Prior to the technological advancements in this field, there were only two treatment options available: long-term use of compression stockings or surgical vein stripping, an

14 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JANUARY 2015 / atCarmel.com

in-patient procedure with significant downtime and a high recurrence rate. In 2004, there was a tremendous change in the philosophy of the treatment of varicose veins as new technology was introduced. “An ultrasound guided laser now allows the doctor to go in and seal the faulty veins,” Dr. Schoonover said. Indiana Vein Specialists was one of the first practices in central Indiana to offer endovenous laser therapy with the newer 1470 nanometer wavelength system. This process uses laser wavelengths that targets the vein wall, resulting in less bruising and a quicker recovery. “Our group was the first to have that system and to use it,” Dr. Schoonover explained. “We also offer ultrasound guided sclerotherapy. That is an innovative way of taking care of the leftover branches following laser treatment. To treat those areas is key to long-term management of the disease.” The newest treatment development is using an injection of a prescription medication called Varithena® with ultrasound guidance to seal off the vein. “Again, we are one of the first offices in central Indiana to offer Varithena. We can treat the same segments that were traditionally treated with laser therapy and it is even less invasive,” Dr. Schoonover said. “The pendulum has clearly swung over to these minimally invasive treatments. Our patients can return to their normal activities quickly.” Indiana Vein Specialists opened their first office in Fishers in 2011, and with a growing need to have a second facility to meet the needs of patients, they opened their west Carmel office in August of 2014. Dr. Schoonover’s staff of eleven includes a nurse practitioner and a physician assistant. Dr. Schoonover resides in Carmel with his wife of 20 years, Kari, and their two sons, 15-year-old Erik and 9-year-old Kristian. atCarmel.com / JANUARY 2015 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 15

Tesla is located at the Fashion Mall at Keystone.

TESLA OFFERS NEW CAR BUYING EXPERIENCE Writer / Bethann Buddenbaum

Tesla Motors is winning over car enthusiasts worldwide. Their success comes despite attempts by detractors to discredit the company’s viability in an oil-driven economy. Wall Street analysts frequently reevaluate the company’s future. And, if they are to be believed, Tesla Motors is doomed every time the price of filling your tank drops below $4. Yet, Tesla Motors continues to add stores, service centers and charging stations in cities across the globe. The company remains a shining example that American entrepreneurism and ingenuity are alive and well. Year over year, Tesla increases both its production and its profit. Analysts, who expected Tesla to post a loss in the third quarter of 2014, were surprised when the company recently announced a profit of two cents a share. Sales of the Model S began modestly with a figure of 2,650 vehicles sold in North America in 2012. By 2013, global Tesla sales reached over 25,000 units. And, although sales estimates were reduced, Tesla had already reached global cumulative sales of 46,948 by September 2014. Tesla’s stellar track record in safety and performance certainly adds to its appeal. Just last month, the Model S received a 5-Star safety rating from the Euro NCAP. This makes Tesla one of the few vehicles ever to receive a 5-Star rating both from Euro NCAP and the U.S. National Highway Traffic ad Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Model S became the first electric vehicle to win “Motor Trend’s” Car of the Year award in November 2012. In May of this year, “Consumer Reports” gave the Model S its highest car rating ever — 99 out of 100.

Here in Indiana, Hoosiers have given Telsa Motors a warm reception. The company opened its Indianapolis location last December at The Fashion Mall at Keystone at the Crossing. The Tesla store sits on the perimeter of the food court. Its open, gallerylike setting is visually inviting, and the sleek Model S vehicles just inside of the entry make people stop in their tracks. And now 200 Hoosiers are Telsa owners. The only way that customers can see or test drive a Tesla vehicle is by stopping into a local store, which is typically located in a shopping mall. Unlike the major auto manufacturers, Tesla Motors maintains full control over its vehicles from the drawing board to your door. “It takes a lot more touch points and knowledge to sell our vehicles,” said Tesla communications manager Will Nicholas, explaining why the company chooses to control the sale of its vehicles rather than turn it over to a third-party dealership. This choice has caused Tesla some trouble in states such as Texas, Arizona, Michigan and New Jersey. Legislators in these states have blocked the company from opening shop specifically because they do not involve a dealer in the sales process. Indiana had no such hesitation in welcoming Tesla, as the Fashion Mall location was Tesla’s first Midwest store. Visitors to Tesla’s store will find a buying experience that is completely different from a traditional car purchase. Demonstration Model S vehicles are parked in the showroom. Test drives are available. But, you will have to wait three to four months for the car

16 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JANUARY 2015 / atCarmel.com

to show up in your driveway. Each car is made to order in Tesla’s Fremont, California manufacturing plant, which churns out an average of 2,000 vehicles per month. Customers purchasing a new Tesla have one model from which to choose. Everything else is all about the options. The average selling price of a Tesla Model S in North America is in the $90,000 range (including a $7,500 federal tax incentive for EV purchases). This figure is comprised of the $69,900 base price plus customization. The most popular upgrade is to the 85 kWh battery vehicle, which provides a range of 230 miles; an equivalent of 88 mpg in the city and 90 mpg on the highway. If your Tesla is used primarily as a commuter car and to get you around town during the week, it’s likely that you don’t need the extended battery life. But it’s tough to let go of the fear of being stranded on the roadside standing beside an electric vehicle with a gas can in hand. Hoosier drivers will want to consider the Subzero Weather option package. This package contains everything that you need to make cold weather driving tolerable: a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, a windscreen wiper de-icer, and heated wiper nozzels. The Tesla pricing structure is very simple. Whether you walk into a store in Indianapolis, Los Angeles or Miami, it’s all the same price and customer experience. The only difference that customers will

pay from location to location is registration and taxes. You won’t get the hard sell on option packages, either. Tesla does not incentivize upsizing with its sales staff, so their primary concern is getting you in a vehicle that fits your needs and budget. Look for the P85D, Tesla’s latest Model S version, to arrive in stores this month. This all-wheel drive vehicle is the world’s first dual electric motor production car. Each axle on the P85D has its own dedicated motor, which acts independently and controls torque to the front and rear wheels. What this means for drivers is unparalleled traction control and 0 – 60 in 3.2 seconds, which makes the Model S P85D the fastest four-door car in the world. The launch of P85D also introduces Tesla’s new Autopilot feature. Besides warning drivers when they exceed the prevailing speed limit, once the signal is turned on and the car deems it safe to do so, Autopilot will change lanes for the driver. These are just early capabilities for the hardware. Adaptive cruise control will be added before the close of 2014 and self-parking is slated for addition next year. These are the last major feature updates expected between now and the release of Tesla’s more affordable crossover vehicle, the Model X, in 2017.

OUR CITY IN 2015

AN OVERVIEW OF DOWNTOWN & MIDTOWN Writer / Janelle Morrison

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard atCarmel.com / JANUARY 2015 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 19

make connectivity so much easier.” While on the subject of road construction and the U.S 31 project, the Mayor gave some good news. “It is going very much on schedule,” he replied. “While Carmel is coordinating very closely with the state and working with them on their detour routes, it is still an INDOT (Indiana Department of Transportation) project, not a Carmel project.” In regards to job growth and the health of Carmel’s economy, Brainard responded with a positive outlook for 2015.

A

s 2014 ends and 2015 begins, Jim Brainard has now served five consecutive terms as the Mayor of Carmel. He shared with the Carmel Community Newsletter the city’s objectives for 2015 and the factors that make the city one of the most attractive places to live and work in the U.S. Rewinding back nearly 20 years when Brainard first took office in 1996, he and members of his administration recognized that Carmel is a large area and that the former Quaker village area known as “Old Town” wasn’t large enough to be a downtown center. The city had a huge public investment in the high school and the public library so they invested in the streets and roads surrounding these public assets. Through public and private partnerships, Main Street and Range Line saw a series of redevelopment projects and notable additions such as, the Indiana Design Center and the development of the Arts and Design District, formerly Old Town. During an interview with Brainard over four years ago, he shared the successes that included the opening of the Palladium, the Studio Theater and the Tarkington Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts, the City Center and the finalization of Keystone Construction Project.

“In the late 90s, we came south four blocks to where Kroger had moved across the street and left an empty strip center,” Brainard said. “The city’s redevelopment commission bought 88 acres with a goal of master planning, partnering to provide public infrastructure and then building our City Center. Of course, the Palladium is the anchor of that area today. Midtown is the redevelopment area that is meant to connect the two.” The project’s focus will be along 3rd Avenue and the Monon Trail in the beginning phase. “There’s lot of abandoned, former industrial buildings along the Monon and between the Monon and 3rd Avenue,” Brainard said. “Those are the areas that will be developed first. Justin Moffett with Old Town Design Group and Jeff Langston’s group, Heartwood Custom Homes, have proposals in front of us. The redevelopment commission is in the process of negotiating with both parties. Pedcor Companies also owns land in this area and has a development proposal on the table as well.”

“Our growth in jobs has been off of the charts in the last two years,” he said. “GEICO is going to add up to 1,600 jobs in Carmel. We’ve had American Specialty Health choose to move their headquarters to Carmel and bring with that relocation 675 jobs. We have smaller firms and longtime Carmel firms growing very quickly. There are several new software companies that are doing well here in Carmel and professional service providers that have major facilities based here. We don’t see this growth stopping in the near future.” In addition to the job opportunities and national accolades that Carmel has received, it is also the school system that attracts people to move to Carmel. Brainard spoke candidly about the funding challenges that have been presented by a statewide coalition that includes Carmel’s Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Wahl and will be reviewed by the state’s legislature in 2015.

“We value the importance of education and particularly public education as being part of the American dream in this city,” A project that was tabled after 2008, and Mohawk Hills is an area of focus for the city Brainard expressed. “We believe that it is a this year. “We have a lot of investment being basic right, regardless of one’s background, to go to a public school. It is important made in Mohawk Hills right now, which is a project that got delayed by the recession,” that we remember that this is a country of immigrants and has been since the day we Brainard explained. “A lot of exciting development is planned for along Meridian were founded. of our country. We also have great parochial and private schools in Carmel for those who want that option. A few years ago we voted to spend additional money, although we have one of the lowest tax rates in the state, on a referendum to make certain our schools would be able to maintain their level of quality programs and curriculum. “The state formula, as it is written now, isn’t kind to suburban schools like Carmel and we are trying to get that changed through the state legislature. Our citizens voted to spend more on our schools with the last referendum. That is our number one economic development driver. In addition to excellent jobs and schools, we need our bike, park and trails system. We need our walkable downtown areas, smarter development, cultural amenities and good traffic flow to have the quality of life that our citizens have come to expect.”

A world-class amenity that is located within the city’s limits, the Palladium, is part of the Center for the Performing Arts. It is an inviting gathering place for the community, along with the Center’s Studio Theater and the Tarkington. Combined, the three venues are a place for community engagement and for people to celebrate great art together. “The city built and owns the building through its redevelopment commission but we recognize that city government isn’t the best entity to operate a performing arts center,” Brainard openly admitted. “We’re better at operating a street department. We set up a 501(c)(3) corporation to operate the Center for the Performing Arts and they have a 50-year lease with us. They have their own board that is divided into two parts. There is the part that operates the center on a day-to-day basis and then there is a part

that operates the Great American Songbook Foundation, founded by Michael Feinstein. “We are really excited about the people on that board, as it has become a national board. It is a way for us here in Carmel, Indiana, to have national involvement and be able to raise funds from across the U.S. for the purpose of preserving this great music and the incredible memorabilia. One of my favorite things that the foundation does is the high school vocal contest. This year it is going to be held in September and it brings together students who love this music and its heritage. It is the music of the twentieth century and that the rest of world knew America by. It tells the stories of our culture and of our people. It is the history of our parents and grandparent’s lives. We don’t have an entity that preserves and teaches the music like the foundation does anywhere else in the country. One of our goals is to have a

standalone building for them located here in Carmel and to raise funds from across the U.S. to preserve the memorabilia and the music from the Great American Song Book.” One of the Mayor’s favorite pieces from the foundation’s collection is the original typed lyrics from the “Unchained Melody” made famous by the Righteous Brothers. Visitors will also find several other unique pieces, including Gershwin’s notebooks and other memorabilia that has been donated by artists and their families. Brainard has received national and international attention for the accomplishments that have been achieved during his years in office. Carmel has been featured in magazines in Denmark and England. Recently, The New York Times featured the city in July of 2014. BBC featured a story on Carmel that received two million hits within a few hours of being posted. While the network from across the pond took credit for their exportation of the roundabouts, they didn’t stop short of dubbing Carmel the “Milton Keynes of the U.S.” “Anytime that we can get our city’s name out there it is a good thing for our city,” Brainard concluded. “When we make that call to try to get a company to locate here, they’ve already heard of us and they associate us with innovation and as a great place to work and live.”

BEHIND THE SCENES IN 2015 WITH TANIA CASTROVERDE MOSKALENKO Writer / Janelle Morrison Photographer / Bill Crawford, Harbor Pictures

While we anxiously await the announcement of the 2015-16 artist line-up in early spring, the board of directors and staff of the Center for the Performing Arts diligently work behind the scenes to ensure another stellar year for the Center’s campus. Planning is underway for the Center’s upcoming fifth anniversary that will take place in January of 2016. Tania Castroverde Moskalenko, president and CEO of the Center for the Performing Arts and The Great American Songbook Foundation, spoke about this year’s initiatives and the accomplishments that have been achieved since she joined the organization in 2012. “One of the things that I felt was imperative when I came on board was to establish a foundation for the sustainability of the organization,” Moskalenko said. “There is a lot of behind the scenes work that is required. Within a few months of my arrival, we embarked on a strategic plan that was put together by the stakeholders of the organization, the entire board of directors and staff, elected officials and key members of leadership within the community. All of these groups participated in creating that strategic plan which really sets the course for the next three years for our organization. Our plan was completed in August of 2013 and we are now a little over a year into that plan and have already completed a lot of the work and have executed a lot of the strategies that we identified in the strategic plan. I am very pleased to see where we are today. We identified 16 goals in our plan and one of these goals was to finalize a permanent affiliation with the Great American Songbook and we accomplished that. I am also pleased with where we are with our organizational chart.”

Tania Castroverde Moskalenko, President and CEO,of the Center for the Performing Arts.

Moskalenko referenced the classic book “Good to Great,” in which Jim Collins says, “…to build a successful organization and

We are providing an incredible number of opportunities that don’t always make the headlines and performing work that I think transforms and builds communities.” The Center’s challenges are indicative to any arts organizations throughout the country, regardless of the size of the organization. The challenges are engaging patrons and raising funds. Throughout Moskalenko’s 16 year career running performing arts organizations, she explained that these are perpetual challenges. “There are no problems in selling tickets to entertainment and big named artists. Where it becomes a challenge is when you’re introducing artists that are not as well known and encouraging people to take a risk on an artist that they may not know.” Moskalenko is a resident of Carmel and is a fan of its schools, where two of her children, 6-year-old twins, currently attend. Moskalenko enjoys coming to the Palladium and enjoys classical music. “It’s magical to walk into this amazing, beautiful hall and listen to this wonderful music that fills my spirit and I am fortunate that is actually part of my job.”

WHAT IS THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK? Alec Wilder, composer and critic, provided a list of the artists he believes belong to the Great American Songbook canon. The canon includes songs from the 1920s to 1950s and songwriters from the latter half of the 20th century such as Henry Mancini, Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Johnny Mandel. The song’s lasting value, structure, musical contents and details of composition are just a few markers as to what make these songs “classics.” Today,

the Center for the Performing Arts is home of the Great American Songbook and the Great American Songbook Foundation’s mission, founded by Michael Feinstein, is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook. They do this through the Songbook Hall of Fame, Vocal competitions, education and Archive and Gallery.

Students from Irvington Preparatory Academy attend the Home Free concert. The students participated in a pre-concert Q&A with the band as part of the Firestone FrontRow education program. The program brings music students to the Palladium for behind-the-scenes opportunities, including open rehearsals and time with the artists.

CCS’S SUPERINTENDENT, DR. NICHOLAS WAHL, EXPLAINS THE ABC’S OF THE SCHOOL FUNDING CRISES Writer / Janelle Morrison Photographer / JJ Kaplan 28 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JANUARY 2015 / atCarmel.com

atCarmel.com / JANUARY 2015 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 29

ccording to the Superintendents of several large suburban school districts, Indiana’s current school funding formula jeopardizes the long-term sustainability of their schools. Surprisingly, school systems in communities that have experienced explosive commercial development in the past few years, such as Westfield and Fishers, are suffering from the same financial shortfalls as Carmel. So why are the schools in some of the state’s most affluent communities, paradoxically, experiencing a funding shortfall while school systems in other less prosperous areas of the state are doing much better? More importantly, what are the respective superintendents doing to alleviate the problem?

Slide A

Slide B

To find answers to these questions and the plans for 2015, I recently sat down with Dr. Nicholas Wahl, the Superintendent for the Carmel Clay Schools. As part of CCS’ strategic planning for this year, Wahl will be engaging the stakeholders and talking and listening to them about their future expectations for the Carmel Clay Schools. To address specifically the funding formula crisis, CCS has joined a group of school districts suffering from underfunding from the state known as the “Indiana Fix-It Coalition.” In order to understand the funding shortfall problem, you must first have a general understanding of how schools are funded in the State of Indiana. Indiana’s school funding is a structure with specific funds which are typically restricted for specific uses. For example, funds for capital improvements such as new buildings or their upgrade cannot come from the general fund just as local property taxes cannot be contributed to increase the general fund. (See Slide A) A partner in the Indiana Fix-It Coalition, Mike Shafer, the CFO for the Zionsville Community School Corporation, has produced a presentation for the coalition that establishes where schools like Carmel. Zionsville, Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern are on the distribution chart and how they compare to high poverty schools such as IPS when it comes to the state funds received. The funding formula [for the general fund, which is the fund that must be used to pay teachers] as it is currently set up, is made up of two major components,” Shafer stated. “One of them is that foundation and is equal to about 80 percent of the funding that goes to school corporations statewide. The other piece is a variable piece called the ‘complexity grant’ that is designed to provide about 20 percent of the money that goes to 30 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JANUARY 2015 / atCarmel.com

“I think that the real challenge that I see with this is, if a principal comes to me with idea about a program or initiative, I have to ask them how they plan to sustain the program once they start it.” —Dr. Nicholas Wahl, the Superintendent for the Carmel Clay Schools school corporations. However, it is variable so each school corporation gets a different amount of money and therefore a different percentage of financing from that complexity piece. The way that the funding formula is set up, that works for the majority of the school corporations in the state, but there are a number of us who are actually getting far less money that we really need to survive and operate. We looked at the school corporations and we plotted the amount of money that each school corporation receives on a per pupil basis versus their ISTEP scores,” Shafer explained. “Not that we’re big proponents of ISTEP, but it is a uniform benchmark where you can get data across the board for all of the schools in the state and one of things, ironically, when we’re talking about the schools that are disproportionately underfunded, you’re also talking about schools, that for the most part, are high performers. The highest performers in the state are those that are worst affected by this problem with the funding formula. If you take the top 25 performers in ISTEP, 21 of them are in this group. When you look at the total amount of money per pupil, we are

tied for third least. School corporations like Carmel, Westfield, Zionsville, Southwest Allen, Hamilton Southeastern, etc., we are all pretty much down at the bottom receiving several hundred dollars, per pupil, less than the state average as a result of the issues with the way that the funding formula is set up and how it operates.” (See Slide B). According to the Carmel Clay Schools Legislative Priorities 2014-15 report submitted by CCS, “The CCS general Fund is currently listed as third from the bottom in per pupil funding in Indiana and is presently a growing school district. The state needs to continue to address the discrepancy in per pupil funding between districts currently determined by the complexity index. The state instituted budgetary cuts to Indiana school systems in January 2010. It is very important that those funds be fully restored. The state needs to incorporate within the funding formula an annual cost of living increase to public school systems in Indiana thus reducing the need for an operational referendum. Due to the lack of funding from the state, the voters in Carmel passed an operational referendum in May of 2010. It is important that these dollars not supplant state funding. If corporations continue to experience funding deficits, the state should allow corporations to extend a referendum beyond the initial seven years. It is imperative that the state continues to explore flexibility between school funds during extraordinarily difficult financial times to assure adequate dollars in the General Fund. This will allow long-term stability and continuity for essential student instructional services. It is

important that the state fully fund state mandated programs. Unfunded mandates steal precious dollars from a corporation’s general fund.” “I commend the Board of Education for CCS who have adopted a legislative priority list that we are sharing with our elected officials, senators and representatives to talk to them about this funding challenge that have right now,” Wahl explained. “The purpose is to listen to them but hopefully is an opportunity for them to listen to us as well. As we sit here, CCS is the third lowest funded school in the state, per pupil, so that challenges with that are we have nothing in there in the funding formula that allows for us to deal with the ever changing needs and just cost of living issues. As we take care of our students, teachers, programs and facilities we’re connected to this funding formula that all flows through the state house. That control is at the state level and not at the local level. I think that the real challenge that I see with this is, if a principal comes to me with idea about a program or initiative, I have to ask them how they plan to sustain the program once they start it. The greatest deficit that I see in the school funding formula is, it’s not sustainable to public school corporations to fund what we do for our students. It is reliant on a cycle of referenda for all school communities if they want to maintain

their current program offerings to their school community. That is not sustainable. The referendum is in essence an additional tax for our constituents to just maintain what we are doing. We are not asking for increases in our programs or offerings just to maintain our current level of offerings.”

“CCS would like to maintain their programs and were able to sustain their programming by passing their referendum in 2010. However, they face the reality that additional referenda will be necessary if the state legislature does not remedy the flaws in the existing funding formula.”

Resolutions can be dirty words in wellness. The connotation that comes with it is that they are short lived – that we make plans of grandeur and then fall short of our lofty goals and expectations. Make this year different. This year, make a plan simply to be resolute – to be determined. Do not expect to change the world, your body or your health overnight. Find everyday victories that lead to longterm success and don’t give up.

2. STEP UP

Take the stairs at least once a day. It doesn’t matter if it is six steps or six flights – every step counts. Don’t waste your time driving around stalking the perfect spot while shopping. Go ahead and park out in left field. Those extra distances can really add up!

3. HAVE FUN

1. RAINBOWS

Bet you won’t forget that. Make sure to eat something colorful at each meal. I’m not talking about fruit loops or green ketchup (cringe). Yellow, green, red, orange, blue – each color correlates with different nutrient profiles. Make half your plate fresh fruits and vegetables.

Yep. I said it. Have fun! If your regimen is not enjoyable and you are miserable every day, it will not be long lived. Make your health something you look forward to. Get a fitness tracker and challenge friends and family. Join a wellness club. Set your own goals and check them off one by one. Find something that works for you and stick with it!

4. DRINK UP

It is easy to get dehydrated, no matter the season. Save yourself a couple bucks and trade the soda for a glass of water. The Institute of

Medicine recommends ~ 9 cups of water daily for healthy adult females and ~13 cups of water daily for healthy adult males.

5. CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES

Not every day can be a celebration, but give yourself a break when you hit a goal or a milestone. Take a deep breath, enjoy your moment and look at how far you’ve come!

6. LOOK TO THE RIGHT RESOURCES

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. There are no magic pills, no magic shakes. Eat right and exercise. Speak with your physician or a registered dietitian to develop a safe and effective wellness plan tailored to you! Be positive when you set your resolutions and have a happy and healthy 2015!

BABY BOOTCAMP MOMS STROLL INTO FITNESS

Baby Boot Camp Moms using resistance bands while their babies wait it out.

Writer & Photographer / Lynda Hedberg Thies

For many new moms learning to multitask on less sleep with their highly anticipated bundle of joy means that normal exercise routines drift into the “once upon a time” story they wish had a different ending. Then add the hectic pace of the holidays with a new baby and the goal of getting into shape starts to look like a fairy tale. But thanks to one local Fishers mom, the idea for moms to workout with their baby can make 2015 the year to reclaim their pre-pregnancy shape, improve their energy and sense of well being. Shortly after returning to the Indianapolis area, Kara Babcock was expecting her first child and was searching online for a prenatal yoga class in the area. That was when she stumbled onto the Baby Boot Camp website. Babcock, a former sales and marketing executive, never considered that she would have anything to do with the program. But she loved the concept and “wished someone would open the program in Owner Kara Indianapolis.” Nothing would happen Babcock until after the birth of her son. It wasn’t until she drove to Sarasota, Florida, to visit with her parents, months after the birth of her son, that she met with Baby Boot Camp CEO Kristen Horler. Babcock went on to say, “Once I met with her and learned more about Baby Boot Camp and all about prenatal/postnatal fitness, StrollerFriends playdates and building a community with the moms, that I fell in love with the program." It was then that Babcock decided, “I should be the one to

bring it to Indianapolis.” She officially purchased the Indianapolis franchise in April of 2014 and began offering classes Sept. 29, 2014. The class is comprised of moms from the Indianapolis area, but the majority of moms have moved from Seattle, Chicago and St. Louis and are looking for a way to stay active while meeting other moms. While the name, Baby Boot Camp invokes images of superhuman infants doing push-ups or a set of seated squats, the fitness program is for moms to exercise with, over and around their infants. Babcock said the program offers a great opportunity for moms to exercise, socialize and their babies benefit in many ways. Currently, classes are offered at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Fishers and the Fashion Mall at Keystone Crossing and have primarily been targeted to the stay-at-home mom. Starting this month, Babcock is expanding to offer a Saturday class to reach more working moms. As for the future of the franchise, she plans to continue offering new classes and locations for both working and stay-at-home moms. She is hiring enough teachers to allow for the growth. Eventually, Babcock says, “I’d also like to grow big enough to have classes for moms and babies all over Indy!” For more information on class times, locations or for more information, please go to babybootcamp.com/in-carmel. HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE TOWNEPOST NETWORK Writer / Tom Britt

It’s hard to believe that just over 11 years ago, my daughter, Tory and I were stufng mailboxes in our neighborhood announcing the launch of atGeist.com. About eight months later, we mailed our frst Geist Community Newsleter to just over 2,500 homes. Today, our TownePost Network has expanded to nine hyper-local monthly newsleters and just over 130,000 homes in Central Indiana. Much of that growth has happened in the past three years and we’re poised to grow even more in 2015 as we start to franchise our concept.

On behalf of our 50 plus freelance writers, “A-Team” of production at Geist, our publishers who are the voice of each local market, my wife Jeanne and myself, we want to wish everyone a happy new year and a healthy and prosperous 2015. We all consider ourselves blessed to be able to serve our communities in a positive way each month.

ROLLER DERBY RETURNS HOME Writer / Devon Dean Photographer / Hannah Switzer

atCarmel.com / JANUARY 2015 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 41

“Raise the bar. Rise to the occasion.” Those words serve as both motivation and mantra for the internationally-ranked Naptown Roller Girls as they begin their ninth home season next month.

respective divisional playoff tournaments. The two leagues also have a history dating back to Naptown’s earliest moments, with Nashville being their first-ever opponent in 2007.

The bar will already be set high as the flat track roller derby league returns to the newly-renovated Indiana Farmers Coliseum.

Smith is expanding her role with the team this year as head of the Training Committee.

She has a big job – overseeing training for the Sirens, Belles and the C-team Third Alarm, as well as skating. Smith served as captain for the Tornado Sirens two seasons in a row and was part of the roster that made back to back World Championship appearances in 2011 and 2012.

The magic of the building can be felt throughout Central Indiana. It is a legendary space that housed hockey icon Wayne Gretsky in his early days and introduced thousands of Midwestern teens to a band called the Beatles back in the 1960s. Because of the Coliseum’s facelift, the league moved to smaller venues on the State Fairground campus and the Indiana Convention Center. The organization is hoping a return to the Coliseum will mean a return for fans as well. “I think people in general appreciate consistency and convenience. Because of all of the moving around the last two years, we lost a big chunk of our fan base,” says Naptown Tornado Siren veteran skater Melissa “Maiden America” Smith. “We think our fans will really enjoy seeing roller derby at the new Coliseum. The facility is absolutely beautiful and it looks like it was built for roller derby.”

Proven expertise for uncertain markets.

The Lebanon native and Purdue graduate says the league is taking extra steps to entice new fans. “We will have new uniforms and are playing highly competitive, closely matched teams,” Smith says. Case in point, the league’s home opener Saturday, Jan. 17 will pit the Naptown Warning Belles (the B-team) and the Tornado Sirens (the A-team) against the Nashville Roller Girls’ A and B teams. Nashville and Naptown are very close in the rankings by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Both leagues ended with 2-2 showings at their
