THE MUSIC PLAYHOUSE CARMEL FACILITY EDUCATES YOUNGSTERS ON THE POWER OF MUSIC

Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided

Ask any preschool teacher and they will enthusiastically explain the benefits of exposing young children to music. Research has shown that music instruction during early childhood improves cognitive and memory development. Since 2002, Indianapolis and Carmel -area families

have enjoyed the music education program offered by The Music Playhouse. In 2014, growing demand led owner Debbie Aikman to open a Carmel location on Rangeline Road.

Sessions follow four seasonal 10-week schedules each year, offering 12 different music collections over a three-year period and include both online and in-person options. The virtual classes are interactive, and a key component is the involvement of a parent or caregiver to model the activities for the attending child. These at-home classes are offered Monday through Friday mornings, Monday evenings, and Thursday afternoons. For those ready to return to the classroom in a brick-and-mortar facility, classes are held Monday through Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings. Students register to attend the same time each week, and are allowed three make-up classes at a different time if space is available. The curriculum has a very specific methodology and approach designed to engage young age groups. The instructors have musical backgrounds, and are trained to lead high-energy and quick-moving sessions. The parents tend to enjoy the diverse music as well. often inspires movement. The 45-minute sessions designed for infants to age five are led by well-trained teachers. A parent or caregiver attends the classes along with the participants. “Rapid brain development during the first

years of life make it the critical time for developing pitch and rhythm skills,” Aikman says. “Nurturing the music development of infants, toddlers and preschoolers opens the door to a lifetime of understanding and enjoyment of music, and greater ease when learning to play an instrument.” atCarmel.com / FEBRUARY 2021 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 5

“I absolutely love the positive developmental impact we are making on the kids through their early exposure to so many styles and rhythms,” Aikman says. “I am also very grateful that we are able to be the conduit for so many families to bond and experience the joy of music.” The Music Playhouse Carmel is located at 620 South Rangeline Road in the Monon Square Shopping Center. Tucked in amongst national brand stores in Carmel’s Clay Terrace is a family-owned business focused on providing a unique shopping experience, highlighted by topof-the-line customer service and unique accessories. Purse Strings was born from the original store in its spot - Vera Bradley’s flagship store was established in Clay Terrace in 2004. Five years later, the store’s leaders changed its name to Purse Strings and started to offer more than just the Indiana designer’s works. Fishers residents Paul and Heather Braun then purchased the store in 2018 with the goal of elevating the shopping experience even further.

“Being in this business as long as I have, I had an idea of what I wanted to do and what additional lines to bring into the store,” Paul Braun explains. Now, nationally renowned accessory lines such as Brighton, Pura Vida and Vera Bradley are lined up to catch the eye of each shopper. Handbag companies such as Hammitt, Hobo and Beside U entice customers with their supple leather and intricate details. Pieces of Me, Dot and Dash Design, and enewton products glitter in all the right places to adorn wrists, necks and fingers. “Our goal is to be the premier accessory store for Clay Terrace,” Braun says. “We’re always adding new things and phasing out things that maybe aren’t as strong.”

or nationally, hoping to bring them to the Carmel store and to the hands of their clientele. And that’s not just for the feminine clients - men looking for a more personal skin care regimen and leather accessories can find products at Purse Strings as well. Customers can find Duke Cannon Supply Company and Kiko leather products at the store. Celebrate self-care with Indianapolis company Ambre Blends, which is a line of high-quality, organic beauty products. Adorn your home in your individual style with accessories from Fishers-based Unplug Soy Candles and Mud Pie gifts. “I think Purse Strings stands out on its own because it’s a mix of having national brands that people are familiar with that brings them in, then we have that local flair with Indianapolis-based companies,” Braun says.

While the in-store shopping experience is unique, the Purse Strings team is working to increase its online shopping presence as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shoppers can choose from the latest offerings for delivery or on-location pickup. Braun’s oldest son works on the online shopping side of the business, while other siblings work in

the store when home from school. “We are a family business,” Braun says. To see more of what Purse Strings has to offer, visit the shop at 14300 Clay Terrace Boulevard, Suite 125 in Carmel. For more info, call 317-846-8372 or visit pursestrings.shop.

CLASS 101 HELPS WITH COLLEGE APPLICATION CHALLENGES IN COVID-19 Story and Photos provided by Class 101

While attending freshman orientation with their daughter preparing for her first year of college, Randy and Kim Stegemoller learned that she was one SAT question shy of receiving a major scholarship. This news was devastating because the tenpoint difference would have saved them thousands of dollars each year. It was then that they realized many parents were having similar experiences as they stumbled through an increasingly complicated college application process and scholarship dollars were on the line. “We knew then that we wanted to help other families like ours. While our children had support through school, they weren’t receiving all of the attention we knew we could provide when managing the process full-time. Randy and Kim were inspired to open Class 101 , a national college planning franchise, in their hometown of Bloomington, Indiana. Additionally, Class 101 tells clients to signup early for PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests to ensure students get a spot and have plenty of time to retest. Carmel Class 101 College Planner, Kara, explains, “early engagement in the process is a game-changer. When it comes to maximizing college and scholarship opportunities, the earlier the better. fter a particularly difficult year like 2020, many people will look to better their mental and physical well-being in the new year. Yoga can benefit both the body and the mind. YogaSix opened in Carmel in March, but quickly closed due to pandemic-related government shutdown orders. “We opened our doors and closed them on the same day,” says Owner Abby Nebughr. “Once the mandate was lifted, we’ve been open ever since.” YogaSix offers six types of yoga classes: Y6 Mix, Y6 Slow Flow, Y6 Restore, Y6 Hot, Y6 Power, and Y6 Sculpt and Flow. The variety ensures there is something for everyone. Beginners can start with any class. The classes are for all levels but have different intensities. “Y6 Mix is geared toward introducing YogaSix to prospective students,” Nebughr says. “It’s a blend of three of our six core class types, to give people a feel for what each one is like - a preview, so to speak. It starts with Y6 Hot, then transitions to Y6 Sculpt and Flow, and ends with Y6 Restore. It is the only class that is 45 minutes rather than 60.” YogaSix offers a full sensory experience with each class. “There is a colored LED lighting system that changes the light color throughout the class,” Nebughr says. “We also have a state-of-theart heating and humidity system, and a stateof-the-art sound system for fun playlists.” Athletes like runners can benefit from Y6 Restore. “Runners, cyclists, or any type of athletes enjoy this class,” Nebughr says. “It’s like a big hug for your body. This class is more of a major release for the body.” With YogaSix, Nebughr wants to establish yoga as a meditation workout for all, rather than an endeavor for only the most elite 14 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2021 / atCarmel.com

THE GIFT OF CHOCOLATE Xchocol’Art Offers Handmade, Award-Winning Chocolate at Carmel Location

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided by Kelli White and Paola-Williams Photography

Back in 2011, Joann Hofer read an article about the origin of chocolate and was fascinated by what she learned. “I realized that chocolate only grows 20 degrees north and south of the equator, in tropical areas,” says Hofer, who lived in South America as a child in the area where chocolate is grown. She later moved to Europe, where she learned how to cook and truly appreciate good food. “I connected all the dots of my life and realized I had to work with chocolate,” Hofer says. Though she was eager to dive into the business, she knew that she first needed to get some professional training. She got in touch with a chocolate manufacturer in Austria who invited her to work in his factory for several summers to learn the process. She also took professional

chocolate courses in Italy and Austria from award-winning chocolatiers.

That’s the hardest thing to do.” In 2011 her company, Xchocol’Art, was born, and grew organically by gaining traction at the Carmel and Broad Ripple farmers markets.

“Chocolate is the hardest of the dessert ingredients to work with, since it needs to be tempered in order for it to look and taste delicious,” Hofer says. “It needs to be melted Hofer chose the name Xchocol’Art as a and brought down to a specific temperature nod to chocolate’s roots. “xocolatl” (the original name for chocolate) comes from the Aztec language. “I kept the ‘X’ because I wanted to go to the source of the chocolate,” Hofer says. “Before I got into this business, I used to paint. I think of working with chocolate as a new medium of art-making, and a constant exercise in creativity.”

“Arts and Xchocol’Art - the universe could not have screamed louder in my ear that this is the perfect place for my shop,” Hofer says. Hofer sources all of her chocolate from She loved the size, and the fact that the sun Columbia, Peru and Ecuador. She won an award at the Academy of Chocolate for her Whiskey Honey Truffle in February of 2019, right around the time she opened her brick-and-mortar shop. Being located in the Carmel Arts and Design district is a dream come true for Hofer.

“In Paris, the best little chocolate shops are tucked away in alleyways and up little hills,” Hofer says. She also won at the International Chocolate Salon for her Chili Truffle, a warm, spicy truffle that is included in the Valentine’s Day Collection. When she thinks about a collection, she considers the upcoming season as well as the clientele. “Women love fruity tea flavors,” Hofer says. “Guys love whiskey honey. I’ll also bring some things that are rum and coconut based.” She’s also selling spicy Hot Chocolate Bombs, which is a sphere of chocolate with marshmallows inside. Customers put it in a cup and pour hot milk on top to turn it into hot chocolate. Sometimes Hofer will make multiple collections per season - for instance, one

For instance, one woman told Hofer that when she was going through chemotherapy, her taste was severely diminished. “She said, ‘For some reason, I can’t taste anything else, but I can taste the Whiskey Honey Truffle,’” Hofer says. “It was her pure indulgence for the day.” Xchocol’Art is located at 228 West Main Street in Carmel. RACKZ BBQ TRADITIONAL MEETS TASTY AT LOCAL BARBECUE SPOT

Owner Ryan Gregg Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Eli Beaverson

Ryan Gregg, owner and operator of Rackz BBQ, says he is always open to suggestions from customers, and willing to go the extra mile to ensure they love their food. Gregg says he and co-owner Zach

Krumwied have stressed these factors since the beginning.

Running Rackz BBQ is not a job Gregg does on his own.

“We opened the first week in December of 2017,” Gregg says. “We opened for dinner only, so we could test the waters and fix any issues that arose. We opened with only the training we had from the restaurant we previously worked at. It actually went surprisingly well.”

“I have an amazingly talented team that I work with,” he says. “Some of the people I’ve worked with for over 20 years.”

Gregg started in the barbecue business back in the late 1990s working at G.T. South’s Rib House, near 71st Street and Binford Boulevard in Indianapolis.

“The ball was rolling then,” Gregg says. “I absolutely love being here in Carmel. It’s been wonderful. Early on, I would notice customers showing their phones to our counter staff at the restaurant. When I’d ask about it, the customers would show us glowing Rackz BBQ reviews on the Nextdoor app. It was great to know we were on the right path.”

“I worked my way up at G.T. South’s over time,” Gregg says. “I really enjoyed the work and the people I worked with. You certainly meet some unique characters in the restaurant business. For whatever reason, G.T. South’s later closed, and I had a decision to make. Should I waste away the experience I’d gained over the years and get a job doing something else, or sell all my assets and try to do it on my own? I chose the latter.”

20 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2021 / atCarmel.com

During the process of looking for a restaurant location, Gregg was contacted by Krumwied, who wanted to help him start a restaurant.

Gregg says Rackz BBQ has partnered with some Carmel organizations to help raise awareness for their specific causes. “When the pandemic hit hard, those organizations used their social media to remind their thousands of followers that

Rackz and other small businesses were still open, and could use support,” Gregg says. “That was really special.” Gregg believes Rackz BBQ has been successful because it sticks to serving greattasting food.

Gregg says his family has given him a lot of support.

“It’s just about putting out the best food we can,” he says. “It’s great to see the customers actually enjoy the food. There is a window from the kitchen to the dining room, and I love having a peek through there, and catching a diner start nodding their head, as he or she is finishing their first bite. Then I do a little fist pump and get back to work.” Customer favorites include the restaurant’s popular combo meals.

“We sell our combos the most,” Gregg says. “We have two choices of meat and two sides. It’s a good amount of food so a lot of couples will share. My personal favorite is an easy choice. It’s the baby back ribs.” Gregg says he never forgets how lucky he is. “I would just like to send out gratitude to the Carmel community,” he says, “I want to give thanks to everyone that spent their

We love Doctor Ealing and the staff. Everyone has Scruffur’s best interest at heart and all of the clinics are always helpful.
