THE BROKEN BARREL 1162 Keystone Way South Carmel, IN 46032 317-663-8168

Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr

The northside now has a unique, throwback bourbon bar to call its own. Conceptualized and launched by Scott Wolf, owner of five Wolfies Grill restaurant locations and The Italian House on Park in Westfield, the Broken Barrel offers more than 100 bourbon and whiskey varieties, classic and specialty cocktails and a small plates menu amidst a refined, 1940s-style interior. “We’re very happy to be able to offer this to Carmel and the northside,” Wolf says. “It’s something fresh and new that I think people will take to.”

Not long after opening up his Wolfies Carmel location on Keystone Way seven years ago, Wolf began to ponder the possibility of utilizing the retail space that sits next to his establishment if it ever became available. “That spot was a nail salon, and we mentioned to the landlord that we’d be very interested in it if it went vacant,” Wolf says. “We felt the salon didn’t quite fit into the theme of the strip center where we’re located, and I knew we could do something good with it.” Last year Wolf finally got his wish and began discussing possibilities for the space with his wife. An eight-month research and planning phase ensued throughout the 24 / 2019 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE

remainder of 2018, during which all ideas were considered for the space including an expansion of the Wolfies private dining area. Eventually, Wolf hit on what he feels is the perfect concept at the perfect time. “We were asking ourselves what does Carmel need and what’s something that could be really cool that would attract people and give them something that they don’t have anywhere else,” Wolf says. “As we started doing research and traveling around, we started realizing there is a need for a bourbon and mixologist concept on the northside. You might find something like that down on Mass Ave but not up here.” Wolf wasted no time implementing his idea — construction and renovation on

the space ran from early January to early March of this year, and Wolf describes the finished interior as quaint and classy with 1940s-inspired visuals, including black-andwhite movies playing on a mounted TV and a modest 50-seat capacity. “We are excited because it has the feel of an independent establishment, but it’s also neat because you can walk next door to Wolfies and listen to a band and watch the Colts or any other great sporting event,” Wolf says. “And we’ve got a great staff of mixologists and bartenders. These guys are knowledgeable and spent a few weeks getting educated before the opening. I would put them up against anybody as far as knowledge on bourbon.” In addition to a large bourbon, whiskey and wine selection, as well as a signature cocktail menu with some spins on classics like the Manhattan and the Old Fashioned, the bar offers a rotating small plates menu featuring steak fondue, shrimp cocktail, buffalo bourbon meatballs, bourbon rib tips and more. “The small plates are planned to complement whatever you’re having to drink at the bar or lounge area, and the cool thing is you can go right next door and get a steak dinner at Wolfies if you want,” Wolf adds. With seven establishments around Central Indiana to call his own, Wolf says his success comes from priding himself on great service, great atmosphere and a staff he says is like one big family. “I think our success comes from the fact that we don’t turn people over and we’re not always re-training people,” he says. “We’re blessed with being able to keep a good staff. We’re also always trying to stay ahead of the curve and are constantly re-evaluating our menu as times change. Bourbons are starting to get hot right now and people are getting more knowledgeable about food and watching food TV shows, so you have a lot more food connoisseurs out there. You have to stay in touch with all of those things, and our bourbon bar reflects that.” 2019 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE / 25

That last area has seen our giving be 10 to 20 percent above budget since our first worship service four years ago.” Worship services at Legacy Bible Church (2140 Greenfield Ave., Noblesville) are at 9:30 on Sunday mornings. They include a separate children’s message for elementary students during the sermon time. Sermons usually are systematic preaching through one entire book of the Bible at a time. The Lord’s Supper is celebrated weekly. Sunday School classes for all ages, including nursery care, are offered at 11:00, following the worship services. The “power plant” of the church, weekly prayer meetings, comes together each Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. More information is available at LegacyBibleChurchIndiana.org.

CEO Nick Carter

ONLINE FARMERS MARKET OFFERS PRODUCTS FROM MORE THAN 100 LOCAL FARMS & ARTISANS Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Amy Payne

Market Wagon, an online farmers market service, offers products from more than 100 farms, bakeries and artisan businesses. Since its 2016 launch, the company has grown by leaps and bounds in terms of both vendors and customers, but don’t let such a rapid rise in popularity fool you.

According to CEO Nick Carter, it is, and always will be, all about small-scale, local farms and artisans.

products directly to consumers offers a new way to revive the family farm. That’s just what I’ve set out to do.”

“This is a business of personal passion for me,” says Carter, a Russiaville native who grew up on a small family farm that he says was nearly lost in the consolidations that marked America’s era of get-big-or-get-out agribusiness. “Enabling farms to bring their

Co-founded by Carter and COO/CFO Dan Brunner, Market Wagon affords customers the convenience of online shopping as well as the opportunity to directly support family farms and businesses. The company’s concept is relatively simple, and that very simplicity,

along with growing consumer interest in supporting small, local farmers and artisans, is likely why Market Wagon has been able to steadily expand its customer base since launching in January of 2016 in Central Indiana. Not unlike a traditional farmers market, Market Wagon customers choose the products they want, as well as the farms they want to buy from. Each farm lists everything they have available, describes its growing practices and can even respond on the site directly to shoppers’ questions about its products. No minimum orders or subscriptions are required. Once the customer checks out, Market Wagon gathers the items from the farms and artisans and delivers it either to that customer’s home or the nearest pickup location. Carter says currently 40 percent of Market Wagon customers opt for delivery. “We’re not just another online food startup, shipping cardboard and styrofoam with a catchy name and an attractive first-time customer discount,” Carter stresses. “We make it a point to be invested in the communities we serve, designing systems that force us to rely on local food suppliers instead of trucking one farm’s product all over the Midwest.” Market Wagon customers can shop for everything from meats, dairy products and baked goods to produce, sweets, pet treats,

soaps and cosmetics, sauces and condiments and much more. Orders placed on or before Tuesdays are available for delivery or pickup by Thursday of that week. “I think people are responding to this because we’re a tech-based business, but we’re connecting the consumer directly to the farmer that sells the product,” says Ryan Thomas, director of operations and a Westfield resident who joined the company a few months before it launched. “Customers can even go on our website and ask questions directly to the farm if they’re wondering about the product, how to cook it best and things like that.” The company now has five locations

around Indiana and Ohio, currently includes 30 pickup locations around Central Indiana and offers home delivery in 14 counties. A small staff of 10 full-and parttimers, along with about 50 drivers, keeps the company humming along, and Carter feels his biggest challenge so far in expanding Market Wagon’s reach is finding enough suppliers to meet consumer demand. “We are constantly trying to find more farmers, and often it’s brand new farmers just getting into the business who can supply more and more of those products that the customers are clamoring for. It’s not uncommon to have staples like eggs, lettuce and bread sold out by the order deadline Tuesday night,” says Carter, who in 2013 co-founded Husk, a line of locallygrown frozen sweet corn, green beans, peas and other veggies available in groceries year-round. Carter and his partners sold Husk in 2016. “Local food is just a new term given to the age-old practice of eating what your environment produces, knowing your farmer and your butcher and your baker and investing not only in the environment but also the community,” Carter adds. “We want the farmer you’re buying from to be someone that you could actually meet and have a conversation within the course of everyday life. Nobody else could say that.” For additional details including info on becoming a vendor, visit marketwagon.com.

Celebrating Community & Camaraderie In Running Shoes Writer / Lisa Hancock Photos provided by RUN(317)

Entering its fifth year, the 2019 RUN(317) Series is more than just an excuse to log a few miles on Thursday evenings. Jeff Graves, president and founder of Vision Event Management who produces the event, says the series affords participants the opportunity to get re-acquainted with Indy’s unique neighborhoods on a more intimate basis. Since Graves launched the RUN(317) Series in the market five years ago, the event has experienced significant growth. In its inaugural year, more than 900 athletes participated in a single race in Fountain Square to benefit Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. The sophomore year, races in the vibrant districts of Broad Ripple and Mass Ave were added to the calendar. Carmel Arts & Design District and Monument Circle races joined in 2016. Various road work projects precluded a Carmel Arts & Design District course from returning to the 2019 lineup, but Graves announced that The Village of WestClay in Carmel is enthusiastic about being a new host location this year.

Comprising five monthly Thursday evening races in different Indianapolis neighborhoods, the series spans three seasons. Kicking off in May and skipping September, the fifth and final finish line tape falls in October. Participants are encouraged to register early as every race has sold out in advance of race day the past three years. Complementing the 3.17-mile run/walk at each event is an invigorating festival-like atmosphere unique to each respective race community. Neighborhood restaurants, bars and shops are showcased, many of which offer participant specials. A live DJ spins throughout the evening to keep the vibe right and energy high. Yard games like cornhole, jumbo Jenga and giant Connect 4 keep participants engaged during the post party as do various vendors with giveaways and register-to-wins. “RUN(317) is a community of its own,” says Graves, former executive director of the Indy Mini-Marathon and 500 Festival VP of Events. “You’ll see all athletic abilities out on the course, from competitive athletes and recreational runners to first-timers and walkers. 52 / 2019 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE

RUN(317) participants celebrate being active, our communities and each other, unlike any group I have ever witnessed. And they do it all to benefit others.” Since 2014, RUN(317) has raised more than $62,000 for various charities across Indianapolis. Each race has a designated local non-profit. This year’s organizations include Partners in Housing, Energy Krazed, School on Wheels, Kids’ Voice of Indiana, and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. “We’ve offered a substantial selection of free branded premium items and merchandise to purchase over the years so there are a lot of RUN(317) logos on the street,” Graves says. “You’ve heard about Jeep owners having their own wave? It’s like those of us in the RUN(317) inner circle have our own nod. We can’t help but smile, and it’s just the coolest thing to experience.” Registration is open now. Participants can sign up for a single race, the three-race mini-series or the five-race full series. Those registering for the 3 or 5-race series receive a limited-edition, pocketed super soft hoodie, in addition to the individual race perks of a commemorative medal

which triples as a refrigerator magnet and a bottle opener, a coupon valid for a free 6-inch Penn Station sub, a RUN(317) collector sticker and two complimentary craft beers from Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co. for those age 21 or older. Free water and Gatorade are also offered as nonalcoholic alternatives. Scotty’s Brewhouse returns as the event’s title sponsor, with Athletic Annex and Brooks Running offering participants the option to upgrade to the VIP Experience. Graves, a Ball State alum who launched Vision Event Management in 2006 as a firm specializing in the planning and logistics for active lifestyle events of all sizes says it’s critical for promoters to offer events that differentiate themselves from others. Graves adds that establishments along the courses enjoy the patronage of the athletes who often eat, drink and shop post-race. “RUN(317) Thursday night runs support an early physical kick-off to the emotional

‘hurry up weekend and get here’ thoughts we often have,” Graves adds. “Get out, get active and pay it forward in the community. Feeling good about yourself makes it that much easier to contribute at work on Friday. And if you cannot compete for whatever reason, you can always make an impact by volunteering.” This year’s race schedule includes The Circle on May 16, Broad Ripple on June 13, Mass Ave. on July 18, The Village of WestClay in Carmel on Aug. 29 and

Fountain Square race on Oct. 10. There are also side competitions such as “Beat the Clock” and “Fastest Runner,” where participants can challenge themselves to win additional prizes. To register or get complete details on RUN(317), including past year photos, volunteer information, competition rules, VIP upgrade and an archive of race results courtesy of Old National Bank, please visit RUN317.com.

We have been in the lead of using more biology and less chemistry. One of our founders is an Agronomist from Purdue, a soil scientist. He works with the team at TLC and with various manufacturers, distributors and developers of lawn products to find the right products and combinations to build the soil. We are utilizing biology to replace some of the chemistry as we build the soil. Many of the newer lawns have poor soil, a clay-pea gravel mix that leaves a lot to be desired. These soils have low nutrient value as well as they bind up the nutrients that tend to be there. Just using organic fertilizers doesn’t help reduce the amount of nitrogen being put on the lawns, it’s just another form of it. With the use of only organic fertilizers, we still have that whole nitrogen cycle which ends up with ammonification and nitrates into the water system. By using biosolids and a variety of things like kelp, humic and fulvic acids, amino acids, mychorrhizea, micro nutrients and other ingredients we are increasing the microbial activity in the rhizosphere. When we increase the microbial activity we are getting nutrients released from the soil which are then more readily available to the turf plant through its root system. The soil and the root system both have a negative charge, and when we can break off these nutrients with a positive charge from the soil they can then be taken up by the root system. By adding carbon into the soil we increase the surface area where these nutrients can also be stored and not just passed through the soil. Some of these products also cause small microfractures of the soil particles leading to more surface area to hold onto these nutrients as well. We practice IPM, Integrated Pest Management, and with our low pressure, low volume applications we can reduce our pesticides as well. We have a great team. Many of our team members have been with us for more than five years, up to 25. We have seven guys with more than 25 years of experience in the field.
