DECIDING WHEN TO RAISE YOUR PRICES AND BY HOW MUCH Price increases are sometimes unavoidable, and as many businesses are dealing with cost increases, supply chain bottlenecks and labor shortages, wide-scale price increases are in effect. The key to implementing a price hike with minimal loss of customers is timing. It’s hard to be the first one in your industry to raise your prices. If others don’t follow suit, your business could be in the embarrassing position of having to rescind price increases and determine other ways to make ends meet. Here are some key considerations when weighing the pros and cons of increasing your prices.

CUSTOMER LOYALTY The first step is to gauge customer loyalty. Some companies have built a base of loyal customers who are willing to pay a premium for their brands. Others have a customer base that’s made up of bargain hunters who would be willing to switch brands to save a few dollars. How do you know how loyal your customers are? Ideally, you’ve been monitoring their purchasing patterns over the years and watching how they respond if you or a competitor has a “sales event.” Depending on the nature of your business and your ability to monitor customer behavior, you can also gauge loyalty by how long customers have been patronizing your business. If there’s significant customer turnover and you increase prices, your business could be in a vulnerable position.

CONNECT

Another consideration is the nature of what you sell. If it’s a basic necessity and you dominate your market, your customers might have little choice but to accept a price increase. And, even if you sell luxury products and services, you might also be in a

Kerri Walz, Audit Manager

good position to raise prices to the extent that your customers have an abundance of disposable income and aren’t price sensitive. Of course, that wouldn’t hold true for cost-conscious buyers of nonessential products.

FOUR QUESTIONS Once you’ve laid the groundwork for assessing the likely impact of a price increase, you can move to the next round of analysis by answering these four questions:

1. W hich products or services should I raise prices on? 2. How much should prices increase? 3. W hen should the price increases take effect? 4. Should I notify customers about increases, and if so, how do I explain the increases?

These questions must be considered in light of how much you’re being squeezed in the current business environment. The more urgent the situation, of course, the less flexibility you have. In deciding which items to raise prices on, consider the potential cash-flow impact. The most immediate effects will come from increasing prices on high-volume products. However, if you’re selling high-volume, low-priced “loss leader” items to draw in customers who’ll also buy more profitable items and that strategy is working, go easy on raising prices on those bargain items.

Generally, gradual, selective price increases are less noticeable to customers than across-the-board price increases. But in some cases, a one-time “tear-off-the-Band-Aid-quickly” price hike, not to be repeated in the short term, can make sense if accompanied by an explanation that customers can accept. Alternatively, you can refresh your product or service offerings and then charge a premium for new-and-improved versions that cost you about the same as the old ones.

NOW OR LATER The current attention on inflation and other unfavorable external market conditions may provide a good cover for your business to increase its prices, especially if others in your industry are raising prices too. By tying your increases to, say, an increase in the consumer price index, or average gas prices, you can help justify a price increase to your customers - and they’ll likely appreciate your transparency. COMMUNITY FIRST BANK OF INDIANA Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Justin Sicking

Many large banking institutions have been closing branches and moving away from in-person banking services. The opposite is true for Community First Bank of Indiana (CFB). It recently opened a banking center location at 9333 North Meridian Street, Suite 125. This new site enables the northside community to enjoy the outstanding customer service, local decision making, and relationship building at the core of CFB. A grand-opening celebration and ribboncutting ceremony will be held on May 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Held in partnership with the Indy Chamber and OneZone Chamber, which serves businesses in Carmel and Fishers, the event offers a free lunch and free coffee drinks from the local favorite, Java House. In addition, a professional photographer will be on hand to take free LinkedIn headshots for all in attendance. Romhaad Davis will serve the location as the Business Banking Center Manager. With more than 12 years of experience in the financial industry, including six years in banking, his goal is to help his clients succeed by offering flexibility and guidance that larger institutions often cannot. CFB

bankers are known for being invested in the community and giving back. Davis follows suit by volunteering in youth sports, mentoring for the Youth Mentoring Initiative in Hamilton County, and bringing communities together with group fitness workout classes. Davis and the entire commercial lending team of Scott Hammersley, Bonnie Riley, Gavin Fisher, Pete Needler, Greg Gordon, Duane Kamminga and Zack Gabriel, as well as Adrienne Riddle, who focuses on treasury management, look forward to serving customers in the area. In addition to personal banking and lending, CFB offers a full range of business checking and savings accounts, commercial loans, SBAguaranteed loan solutions, and treasury management services. The location has both lobby and drive-through banking, as well as 24/7 ATM access. “While we have great technology, we still believe relationships are built face to face,” says President and CEO Robb Blume. “We are tremendously excited to open our first full-service banking facility in Indianapolis and our fourth new office in the surrounding area since 2019. We look forward to serving the citizens of Marion County and Hamilton County, as an independent community bank, for many years to come.” TownePost.com / APRIL 2022 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 7

THE FUTURE OF

Regenerative Healing 8 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com

Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Linda Oldiges

The goal of The E-Spot Medical Spa, located at 11405 North Pennsylvania Street, Suite 102 is to alleviate pain and get people back to doing the things they love best. The facility uses the FDA-approved laser technology to accelerate healing in teenage athletes through retirees who suffer from geriatric illnesses. This patented technology consists of a high-powered class IV, cold laser system that has the ability of increased penetration over a larger area and, unlike other lasers systems, is safe for all skin colors. The result is faster healing and quicker relief for sports injuries, wound healing after surgery and chronic pain from soft tissue inflammation. While light emitted from a typical light bulb has many wavelengths and spreads all over, laser light is a focused beam with a specific wavelength and a very high intensity. Lasers have been used as medical devices since the late 1960s, and people are familiar with their role in various procedures such as cosmetic, dental, refractive eye and many other surgeries.

THE E-SPOT MEDICAL SPA PROVIDES LASER THERAPY THAT REGENERATES, RESTORES & RELIEVES

TownePost.com / APRIL 2022 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 9

The Thera-Lase System used by The E -Spot Medical Spa represents the latest in breakthroughs for noninvasive medical use in laser technology. Because of its higher energy level, it is able to safely induce photochemical reactions in soft tissues of all color over a larger and deeper area. Staff are highly trained at the E-Spot Spa, headed by Marjorie Beaver and Patrick Cowherd.

swelling is reduced and new cell growth is stimulated. The absorbed light promotes an increase in cellular respiration and other physiological responses which lessen pain and result in healing.

“We have an amazing and experienced team of technicians and medical staff,” Beaver says. “The people from the laser company came to train our staff and clinicians, then we sent our lead technician who has a medical background out to them for more training. Which our lead technician trained everyone further and will continue to do so, including other technicians that we will employ as well as in our future locations.” Although it’s called a cold laser, patients experience a soft, gentle heat emitted from the device. A staff member holds the laser 12 to 14 inches away from the affected area and the skin is never touched. A sweeping or brushing motion is used to extend the treatment area six inches wide and penetrate six inches deep. Unlike lower powered lasers with less optimal wavelengths, the laser system used at E-Spot decreases the rate of absorption of light energy by skin pigment, or melanin. “People of darker melanin can be burned by some cold lasers,” Cowherd says. “If a regular cold laser is used on them, the wattage has to be turned down and then it is not as effective. We can actually use this class IV cold laser on all skin types and also use it as a diagnostic tool because it can be used to pinpoint the source or area of pain. To the patient, it is as warm as a blow dryer, but it feels warmer in the compromised area. It is never uncomfortable. “It can be used for sports injuries such as concussions, sprains, ACL or meniscus tears,” Cowherd adds. “It helps with arthritis, migraines, chronic back pain, COPD, long-haul COVID, bed sores, wounds, chronic/acute pain and more.

Patients have ranged from geriatric to high school athletes and the youngest that there is research on is age four. We can enhance and complement traditional orthopedic surgery. Just like sunlight creates life for plants, the laser light can stimulate new cell growth and clear up scar tissue.” A session is typically 30 minutes long. Because every patient is different, every treatment plan is different. There is no typical patient profile, so every individual is provided a consultation and evaluation based on their particular injury or medical problem. “We have Medicaid and Medicare codes to cover the procedures which is in the planning stages for clients to use, but right now services are paid by check, cash, or credit card,” Beaver says. “Typically, the treatment is less than insurance deductibles. Getting Botox can be more expensive depending on what area you treat.” “It could take as little as two to three treatments for a patient to get pain relief,” Cowherd says. “A third-degree ankle sprain typically takes six to eight weeks to heal. With our system, after six or seven treatments, someone could be back to their sport at a much faster rate.” When asked how the technology could help a condition such as a concussion, Cowherd explained that damaged mitochondria surround the traumatized area of the head. Mitochondria are membrane-bound cell organelles that produce chemical energy needed for cells to work properly. When the light from the class IV cold laser comes into contact with the injured area, internal 10 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com

E-Spot Medical Spa is pleased to be located in Carmel, due to the high concentration of doctor offices and other medical-based businesses in the area. It is important to the staff to give back to the community. Each month a team member selects a local nonprofit or philanthropic organization to donate to and raise awareness of it. Cowherd, Beaver and their incredible team want to get the word out about how E-Spot Medical Spa can improve the life of someone living with pain and discomfort. They both would like to see career centers or trade schools teach students how to use the laser on patients. They are hopeful that someday the spa could partner with a post-secondary institution. E-Spot Spa has plans to open multiple locations not only in Indiana but in 20 other states within the next 1-3 years. “We want everyone to understand what we are doing at E-Spot to help heal folks,” Cowherd adds. “It’s important they realize that there are so many lasers out there, but this is the only laser that can do what we are doing because of its sophisticated technology. “Lots of doctors and organizations are starting to look into partnering with us because of the laser light therapy technology we use at E-Spot Spa. Come in and experience it, then you can see for yourself. Our goal is to help people to be able to resume their sport or get back to the life they want. Our job is to accomplish that quickly with just the number of sessions needed. We want to help people experience life pain-free around the world.” The E-Spot Medical Spa is located at 11405 North Pennsylvania Street, Suite 102 in Carmel. MEET IRINA SMULEVITCH

LOCAL ARTIST AND TEACHER REFLECTS ON HER JOURNEY

Writer / Heather Hunter Photographer / Justin Sicking

To the Village of WestClay, Irina Smulevitch is a treasured friend and multitalented artist who owns Carmel Art Education Studio. But to many of her younger students, she is known simply as Miss Irina. “When I have new students I always introduce this place as my second home,” she says. “Then I tell them, ‘Now it’s your second home too.’ ” Her pride in the students is obvious in the collection of their work that hangs on the walls. She knows the story of each artist intimately - a prosecutor, a Marine, an engineer, and a friend undergoing chemotherapy, among others. “I love when my students see they can achieve something they never thought they could,” she says. “Some artists feel that expressing themselves is all they can do, but for me the satisfaction of teaching sometimes overcomes the need to paint for myself.”

Irina and Jacob Smulevitch

In total, Irina teaches 15 classes including five for children and 10 for adults. The classes are a judgment-free zone where students of all ages can express their creativity in a friendly, diverse environment. However, at one time she couldn’t imagine teaching anyone in English. When she emigrated to Dallas, Texas, from Moscow in 1993, she only knew one English sentence: “Hi, my name is Irina.” 12 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com

Thanks to her master of fine arts degree in fashion from the prestigious Moscow Textile Academy, she entered the American workforce with an artistic background. “It helped me in the beginning, when I was basically speechless, to come back to fine art and express myself in colors,” she says.

and friends, she finally opened Carmel Art Education Studio on February 12, 2018.

Her work led her from Dallas to New York to Frederick, Maryland. Along the way she mastered English through intense practice that included classes and a lot of classic literature, which she thoroughly enjoys. She also had a son, Jacob, with whom she moved to the north side of Indianapolis in 2008.

On her move-in day, 32 of Irina’s students and supporters showed up to help move supplies and build desks. They ordered pizza from Greek’s and coffee from Zing! Cafe. Neighbors stopped by to introduce themselves and learn her story.

At first her family lived in one of Carmel’s neighboring communities. Then, she visited an arts festival in downtown Carmel and fell in love. “The architecture just reminded me of Frederick,” she says. She and Jacob moved to Carmel and never looked back. Irina taught at the Indianapolis Art Center for a decade. Although her students felt like family, she still dreamed of owning her own studio. With the encouragement and support of her students

“I couldn’t have done it without the support, but I also worked very, very hard for this,” she says. “This studio is my dream come true.”

That story inspires many including Jacob, who inherited her incredible drive and passion for teaching. At just 25 years old, he is the head coach for the Charlotte Rush Premier Hockey League team in Charlotte, North Carolina. He calls his mom before and after every game he coaches. “My mom has supported me in every step of my career,” he says. “When I think about all she’s faced and the people she’s impacted, it makes it easy to push through the tough days.”

TownePost.com / APRIL 2022 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 13

From day one, The Village of WestClay has been a blessing to Irina. “Seeing the way they’ve embraced her, it’s everything I’ve known she’s always deserved,” Jacob says. The tight-knit WestClay community is kind to small businesses, since “everybody really knows each other,” Irina explains. “It’s so nice when you’re walking on the street and people greet you by name.” During COVID-19 lockdowns, her students stopped by during their normal class times and waved through the windows of her studio. To support her when classes were impossible, the WestClay president posted a message stating that residents could hire her to draw and paint pictures of their homes. In response, people lined up outside to commission her work. “That support is what helped me keep my school alive,” she says. Now, her neighbors are rallying around her again. Irina was born in Odessa, Ukraine, and still has family in the area. “The support for my motherland from the community has been overwhelming,” she says. In her window hang Ukrainian and American flags printed for her by her neighbor, who owns The Village Barber. “It’s a small gesture but it means so much,” she adds. Carmel Art Education Studio is located at 12749 Meeting House Road, Suite 120 in Carmel. Visit carmelartedstudio.com for the full schedule of art classes, or call 301-693 3827.

TIME FOR TRAINING

PUP CLUB TEACHES DOGS FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

Our little fur-babies sometimes need a little help learning how to be the best. Pup Club is a training program for puppies 10 to 18 weeks old. Puppies attend two half-day sessions per week for six weeks. Owners attend a weekly training session to help reinforce their pup’s new skills. Pup Club teaches puppies 16 different foundational skills utilizing positive reinforcement. During their time at Pup Club, puppies also receive supervised socialization and group play. “We cover the foundations such as potty training and basic commands like sit, down and leave it,” says Derra Mandl, trainer. “We also work on polite greetings, bite inhibition, chewing and leash walking. While the pups are here with us, they’re walked regularly on a leash, so they get used to going outside in any weather condition.” The program’s cost is $150 per week, and participants must commit to the sixweek program. Mandl notes it’s vital for pup parents to attend the weekly training sessions to reinforce skills learned at Pup Club. “We welcome any family member living in the home with the pup at the weekly training session,” Mandl says. “We realize it’s

not always possible for the whole family to come in, but each family member needs to be involved in training.” Pup Club only utilizes positive reinforcement training. Sometimes that can be a treat, and sometimes it involves praise when the puppy completes a task. Mandl is a certified dog trainer through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. She practices positive reinforcement and fear-free training methods. She has been working with animals since 2013, and has been working specifically with behavior and training since 2018.

“Positive reinforcement training helps puppies learn much faster,” Mandl says. “It also helps lifelong learning. I primarily use treats, but as the puppy progresses sometimes I might use praise or play with toys.” Pups can start training at any time from 10 to 18 weeks old, but Mandl says the sooner the better. “A lot of people think when they’re young it’s too early to train, but they’re actually able to learn very, very quickly,” Mandl says. “Also, they haven’t been able to establish many bad-habit behaviors. It’s much easier to mold them.”

DOVETAIL GROUP INTERIOR DESIGN AND HOME REMODELING FIRM Story Provided & Photo by Amy Payne

In 2015, Kayla Stauffer and Liz Curtis formed Dovetail Group after seeing the need in the marketplace for a comprehensive design solution that blended both interior remodeling, as well as furnishings, decor and overall styling of a home. The team has diverse capabilities when it comes to project scope in that they can take on residential remodels, new build construction and fullscale commercial projects. Liz and Kayla met and worked together at a home remodeling firm that focused primarily on kitchens and baths. Early in their careers, both noticed the industry was dominated by remodeling companies that put construction before design and style. Liz, whose background is in finish and fixtures selections and custom home furnishings and décor, started her own firm, while Kayla, whose background is in interior design, space planning and construction management, opened her own firm. “My clients needed help with furniture and décor, and her clients needed help with structural modifications, so we ‘dovetailed’ our companies together. That’s how we came up with the name Dovetail Group,” Kayla explains. Together, Liz and Kayla had a unique idea to disrupt the home remodeling industry in a few very important ways. First, Liz and Kayla wanted to combine forces and form a woman-owned business to appeal to their female customers. They focus on the design

first, finalize all the details and then turn projects over to their trusted independent contractors to perform the construction. Budgeting is of the utmost importance which is why they offer itemized pricing of all of the materials and furnishings that are involved in a design project rather than providing a lump sum price with no detail. These changes allow Dovetail Group to manage the process while adhering to budgets and advocating for their clients throughout the process.

600 East Carmel Dr., Suite 230 Carmel, IN 317-503-7891 dovetailgroupindy.com

“We don’t just create a beautiful space,” Liz says. “We make a beautiful space that fits their budget.” “We found a need in the market for fullservice design, which involves taking a project through not only the remodeling element but also the furnishings and decor,” Kayla adds. “It’s giving people a comprehensive design solution and ensures that whatever we do will go with the rest of the home.” As Dovetail Group grew, Brad Horn joined the group as an architectural designer and has elevated the customer experience by utilizing 3D renderings and detailed construction drawings throughout the design process. “Those 3D renderings of spaces and all the different design options, in combination with seeing all the finishes in person, gives people the reassurance they need to make that investment in their home,” Kayla adds. Elizabeth Stewart joined the team last TownePost.com / APRIL 2022 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 19

CONNECT year as Design Coordinator, to help manage and communicate the ever-changing production timelines caused by COVID-19 supply chain issues. “There are hundreds of items that need to be ordered and managed throughout our process. HOPE AND JOY - DOLCIE DO’S COMMITMENT TO LIFE Dolcie Do always dreamed of a beautiful smile. She knew that smile, she saw that smile in her mind. But she did not see that smile when she looked in the mirror. The hardest part was explaining that smile. Her biggest challenge was getting the many dentists she trusted to see her dream. She started her journey to a better smile in 2005.

Dr. Springhetti and Dolcie reviewing cosmetic enhancements

After many visits to various dentists and many attempts to create that smile she had in her mind, Dolcie contacted Dr. Lesa Allison, a personal friend with a dental practice in Greenwood. Dr. Allison heard of Dr. Springhetti and referred Dolcie to the Springhetti Dentistry Instagram page. Dolcie contacted Erika at the front desk for an appointment. Erika remembered that first call and her first introduction to Dolcie. Obviously, Dolcie came into the clinic enthusiastic and full of hope. She has since become a part of the family because of her hope for a better look and feel. And her passion for a good life. Looking back on her experience at Springhetti Dentistry, Dolcie affirms, “I came to Dr. Springhetti for seven months, and it was worth every minute!” Here’s why. Our previous articles explained Dr. Springhetti’s approach to a healthy, natural and beautiful smile and overall dental health. Although every patient has a unique and personal issue, the steps needed to design the treatment plan and perfect that plan is routine for every patient.

COMMUNICATION THE GOLDEN RULE OF RELATIONSHIPS Dolcie recalls feeling comfortable and hopeful when she first met the clinical staff. Dr. Springhetti took his time to listen carefully to Dolcie’s story and her vision of a smile. This extra time and consideration made her even more comfortable and confident that

Springhetti Dentistry was the right choice for her. Feeling confident is an important motivator for most professionals. Dolcie recalls trusting Dr. Springhetti simply because he was able to show results with other patients and took the time to understand not only her problems but her vision. Dr. Springhetti completed his interview and examination and completed his initial assessment. “Dolcie, I’ll see you in two weeks,” he said. Some patients may think two weeks is too long between consultation and presentation. Not Dolcie. She appreciated and commented that taking this time was reassuring to her because she knew he was doing the research, spending time identifying problems, formulating solutions and identifying the right materials to make her healthy and happy if she made a choice to go forward with the treatment plan.

COMMUNICATION UNDERSTANDING AND SUPPORT The women at Springhetti Dental have a special place in Dolcie’s heart. Dolcie recalls that there was always someone there to re-assure her, support her when necessary and say a kind word or encouragement at the right time. It didn’t take long for the bond between professionals and patients to embrace Dolcie. The ladies and Dr. Springhetti became part of her family. Close and comforting.

CLINICAL STEPS TREATMENT PLAN Two weeks. Appointment time. Greeting from Erika at the front desk. A short wait. Then on to Dr. Springhetti’s office. From discussions with Dolcie, her history and his examination, Dr. Springhetti knew why Dolcie was not happy with her smile. He could see the areas of concern that were causing Dolcie’s discomfort and disappointment with her smile. Dolcie knew something was wrong but could not fully explain the problems that Dr. Springhetti could see or deduce. Dolcie did not have a naturally aesthetic smile. But why? Although Dolcie had seen many dentists since 2005, they were unable to identify the problems she was trying to describe. Sometimes it seemed like she was asking for the impossible. Dolcie noticed a difference at Springhetti Dentistry. Dolcie was pleased that Dr. Springhetti paid attention to her story, her clinical history and she noted that small details were not lost. Dr. Springhetti noted them and considered them in future treatment. After discussion and examination, and as a cosmetic dentist, Dr. Springhetti could see her areas of concern in scientific and cosmetic terms. But he also realized that although he could have resorted to detailed explanations and scientific terms, what was needed to solve this problem was creating trust and confidence with Dolcie. He needed to give Dolcie the confidence to trust his training and his passion for the art of cosmetic dentistry.

While in the treatment chair, Dolcie realized that the team at Springhetti Dentistry was the right choice. The team met all her expectations and she relaxed and trusted Dr. Springhetti. The team made her comfortable and appreciated. Dolcie’s major problem, other than the lack of natural aesthetics, was her bite. And to correct the bite, the first objective was

the removal of the wisdom teeth and a comprehensive bite adjustment. Although Dolcie’s problem was her bite, she also wanted a cosmetic solution, a Smile Makeover. In order to get to that step, Dr. Springhetti and Dolcie reviewed a treatment plan that included: • Gum treatment to correct gum level • Removal of wisdom teeth which were

interfering with her natural bite • Comprehensive Bite Adjustment • Removal of her unaesthetic crowns and • Restoration with new Porcelain Crowns with the correct shape, contour, and color to meet Dolcie’s specifications. Comprehensive care and cosmetic dentistry may require longer treatment times. Springhetti Dentistry takes a patientcentered approach to comprehensive care. By listening to and observing the patient throughout treatment, treatment can proceed at a pace aligned with the patient’s wishes. The staff is quite good at judging and discussing the pace of treatment with their patients. Of course, the kind words from the women in the office helped keep Dolcie’s spirits up. After all, she was committed to finally having the smile she wanted since she began treatment in 2005 with other providers. It was a long journey. Smile makeovers have become increasingly sophisticated over the years. Dr. Springhetti’s lab includes a service where a before and after graphic representation is possible using photoshop. This feature impressed Dolcie

WELL SERVED RAJEEV RAM REFLECTS ON HOMETOWN INFLUENCE, PRO TENNIS CAREER & GIVING BACK Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided

H

aving traveled the country and the world for years as a professional tennis player, Rajeev Ram will always look fondly toward the Hoosier state, and Carmel in particular, for several reasons. “Playing at Carmel, at the high school and the Racquet Club, had a huge positive influence on me,” says Ram, a Carmel High School Hall of Fame inductee. “I’m 36 years old and have been playing pro tennis for 15 years, and I still enjoy it. I feel like if I didn’t have those experiences with great people around me to influence me, I might be burnt out by now. It was really just a glorified hobby for a long time, and those around me let me do that and didn’t push me too much.” Ram’s tennis journey began with casual matches against his father in northern California at their local park. He developed a passion for the game and soon realized he possessed uncommon ability. “I don’t remember life without tennis, more or less,” says Ram, who was born in Colorado, and whose family moved to California when he was one month old. “I was an active kid and enjoyed all sports, and tennis was just something I did a little bit better than any other sport.” In 1996, when Ram was 12 years old, his 24 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com

family moved again, this time to Indiana. He began playing at the Carmel Racquet Club and, as his game continued to improve, thoughts of eventually going pro began to surface. “I was about 16 years old when I felt like I had made some big jumps as far as my skill level and that, if I could continue to make progress, I could make a career out of it,” says Ram, who won two NCAA titles at the University of Illinois. “Before then, I considered it something that was fun and that could be a road to a good education, but by the mid-teen years when I was one of the better players in the world for my age group, I realized I could really keep going with it.” During his two years playing at Carmel High School, Ram became all-state as well as the state singles champion. After his sophomore season, he decided to forego high school tennis in favor of higher-level play.

“I STILL ENJOY PLAYING, I STILL ENJOY PRACTICING - I LOVE IT ALL, AND I THINK A LOT OF THAT COMES FROM PEOPLE AROUND ME AT A YOUNG AGE, INCLUDING IN CARMEL, LETTING ME SET MY OWN PACE AND CONTROL THE AMOUNT THAT I WAS INVOLVED IN TENNIS.” — RAJEEV RAM

“Tennis is a funny sport because with a lot of other sports, you play high school then college, and then on to the pros - but since tennis is so global, it doesn’t work like that,” says Ram, who won the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics with Venus Williams in mixed doubles competition, and made it to the finals of the U.S. Open mixed doubles in 2016. “Kids will play at an international level from a very young age, and you have to look for that sort of competition if you’re going to make a career out of it.” Ram won his first Grand Slam men’s doubles title with Joe Salisbury at the 2020 Australian Open, and tried to find a silver lining in the delay that the coronavirus pandemic forced on the pro tennis world for a while. “There was a lot of momentum from that [Australian Open] win that got stopped,” Ram says. “It was weird not to travel and do what I typically do, but I have a lot of mileage from so many years playing on tour, so I took that time to think about how to preserve my body for a few more years. I didn’t mind the time off, and I spent some good time at home with my wife in Indiana.” In 2010, Ram launched EntouRaj for Kids, a nonprofit organization that generates funds for tennis programs

and scholarships. Throughout the years, the organization’s leaders have put together exhibition matches featuring tennis pros like Andy Roddick, Jennifer Brady and Alison Riske. “High school tennis is such a fond memory of mine, and we try to raise funds to help other high school programs that don’t have the funds for uniforms, rackets, nets, balls or whatever,” Ram says. “The exhibitions have gotten difficult to coordinate and we’ve switched gears more recently, so now people can come to our foundation or make direct donations. In exchange for donations, we offer packages, like a guest package where you can be a guest of mine at the U.S. Open and other big tournaments around the world.” Ram continues to compete in the tennis circuit and still loves the game. “I still enjoy playing, I still enjoy practicing - I love it all, and I think a lot of that comes from people around me at a young age, including in Carmel, letting me set my own pace and control the amount that I was involved in tennis,” Ram says. JUST LOVE COFFEE CAFE COFFEE FRANCHISE PUTS COMMUNITY FIRST

Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Justin Sicking

Just Love Coffee Cafe on Old Meridian Street is a cafe with a heart. Besides serving up delicious beverages and scrumptious food, the recently opened establishment is dedicated to giving back to the Carmel community. The corporate company’s mission to benefit local philanthropies is what attracted Owners Erika and Peter (P.J.) Steele. “Just Love Coffee started out in Nashville as an internet company that sold roasted coffee

beans,” Erika Steele says. “It was founded by Rob Webb as a way to raise money for families shouldering the expense of adopting internationally. People could smell the beans being roasted and began to stop in wanting to buy cups of coffee. So, he put in a cafe and started to franchise. Webb realized that different locations would gravitate to their own nonprofit interests, so he gave the individual franchises the freedom to do that.”

Steele’s goal is to focus on a different local nonprofit each month. She is currently researching organizations and is particularly interested in bringing awareness to those that get overshadowed. In January the O’Connor House was the first to benefit, when friends and family of the staff ordered and ate in exchange for gifts of diapers, gas cards, paper towels and monetary donations.

Steele moved to this area from Houston when her husband was offered a job in Indianapolis. A native of Greenwood, she was excited to come back to Indiana to be close to family. Although she had worked as an engineer in the space industry, she was working for a nonprofit when the family decided to relocate.

Just Love Coffee has locations throughout the south and the Midwest. People who know the brand are excited to pop in to buy the small-batch roasted beans. Besides more than 10 classic espresso drinks such as cappuccinos, the cafe has signature lattes. One of the most popular is the White Chocolate Tiramisu. Also available are drip coffees, cold brews and teas. Barista boxes of coffee that serve 10 to 12, and gallon jugs of cold brew or tea, can be purchased to carry out.

“It felt that moving was the right decision,” Steele says. “I absolutely loved running the nonprofit in Houston. It involved a food pantry, disaster relief, and aided clients to get medical and dental care. I thought I would stay in the nonprofit world, yet my husband comes from an entrepreneurial background. We got connected with Just Love Coffee, and their mission of giving back is who we are.”

The food has an amusing twist - every item, minus the fresh salads, is cooked on a waffle iron. The menu includes lots of specialty waffles served with strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream, but don’t overlook the savory offerings. Many come with unique sauces that were especially

developed to complement each item. The grilled All American BLT is served with jalapeño mayo, and sun-dried tomatoes accompany the Roast Beef and Cheddar Melt. The cozy interior has fun aspects as well. When customers walk in, they immediately notice a huge hanging light fixture in the shape of a waffle. Also noteworthy is the turntable that drinks are served on. Each franchise owner is encouraged to design their lazy Susan with a unique motif that is special to them. Steele’s family members are huge Indy 500 fans. Steele, her sister and her father ran the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon together several times and hope to do so again this year. The logo on the cafe’s turntable reflects this with the phrase “Coffee starts your engine” embossed on it.

PROVEN EXPERTISE for uncertain markets.

“In the future we hope to have events such as bingo and trivia night,” Steele says. “It’s been wonderful already. It’s a real family endeavor. My niece works in the kitchen. We have amazing customers that have already become regulars. Carmel is the perfect place to play and shop. This location checked off all the boxes. It has an amazing patio for warm weather, the floor plan worked and it is close to good parking. I am grateful to our wonderful team members. They have learned our menu items and how to make our craft drinks. They are the secret sauce.” Just Love Coffee Cafe is located at 12525 Old Meridian Street in Carmel. FLAVOR OF ITALY

STACCO HOUSE BY MAMMAMIA FEATURES AUTHENTIC ITALIAN FARE Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Payne

When Lucio Romani came to the United States 25 years ago, he was disappointed that he could never find decent ice cream or gelato without traveling to Little Italy in New York or Chicago. In the back of his mind, he kept thinking he’d open his own gelato establishment. A veteran in the restaurant business, having owned and operated Carmel’s Ristorante Roma, he stayed plenty busy through the years. In the summer of 2016, Romani and his longtime friend from Italy, Stefano Gangitano, set up a small gelato stand in the back of Ristorante Roma on the Monon Trail. They wanted to gauge community interest in such a shop, and it was well received. The city of Carmel embraced their handmade gelato, prompting the pair to open Mammamia Gelato, a brickand-mortar establishment, in the summer of 2017, with Christine Jourdan acting as

manager. Gangitano lives in Italy with his family and typically comes here for a few months every summer. Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, the gelato shop had in-store seating where customers could choose from 16 flavors of handmade, small-batch gelato - eight flavors were water-based and vegan, while eight flavors were milk-based - made in the store daily with a machine that Romani imported from Italy. The shop also had fresh-ground Italian espresso for cappuccinos, mochas, caffe lattes and more. Their pastry case was filled with sweets like Italian cookies and cakes that Jourdan baked in-house.

it reopened, he transitioned to call-ahead and curbside service. When it became clear that the coronavirus wasn’t going away any time soon, he and his staff decided it was an optimal time to transform Mammamia into a new concept, called Stacco House by Mammamia, which will continue to offer gelato, coffee, cookies and pastries, and add Italian food, carry-out wine, and specialty Italian products like olive oils, meats, breads and cheeses.

After selling Ristorante Roma to his niece and her husband, Romani had more time to focus on the gelato shop, and he began to conceive a plan to add more Italian food items to Mammamia.

“I love to cook and wanted to add dishes from my childhood,” says Romani, noting that all the recipes come from his mom. “When choosing menu items, I close my eyes and think back to the dishes she used to make every Sunday like seafood lasagna and lasagna with meat sauce. They are all very simple but extremely tasty. It doesn’t just fill your stomach when you eat it. It fills your heart.”

When COVID-19 hit, Romani had to close the doors to Mammamia Gelato. When

Romani and Jourdan met with Mario Rizzotti, a judge on the Food Network’s

“Iron Chef America” show and owner of Real Italian Gourmet Corner, about including some of his Italian truffle oils, wildflower honey with truffle, and varieties of specialty jams for purchase. “We wanted to create a space where people could create their meals a million different ways each visit, and really experience unique Italian foods as if they were on holiday in Italy,” Jourdan says. The Stacco House concept does not currently include indoor seating, but in the future the staff hopes to have a few tables in the front of the store and also build a front patio. Customers can order takeout and delivery through the eatery’s online ordering system. The menu is filled with 10 different choices of lasagna by the piece, including vegan and vegetarian options. The menu will include salads, eggplant parmesan, suppli (seasoned tomato risotto stuffed with mozzarella and deep-fried), polpette (a meatball in tomato sauce), baked tomato stuffed with seasoned risotto, multiple panini options and more. Gelato, coffee, cookies and pastries are available through the eatery’s online ordering system. “We have some specialty items like affogato (gelato drowned in a shot of espresso), cornetto con gelato (a croissant with a scoop of gelato tucked inside), and our custom-made gelato cakes,” says Jourdan, who makes all of the pastries, unique Italian cookies, gelato and more. Stacco House enables locals to get a taste of Italy without traveling far. The name comes from Romani’s father. It was a nickname of his when he was younger. “My father loved to eat good Italian food my mama used to make,” Romani says. “Plus, Americans can pronounce it.” Stacco House by Mammamia is located at 834 West Main Street in Carmel. “This is the third time that we have used Stacey. She does an AMAZING job. I love how stress-free and simple she makes the home buying process, which can usually be quite stressful and complicated. Stacey never shows you a property that you can’t afford, and she is always looking out for her client’s best interest. She is the best.” -Dave and Nancy
