HOMETOWN HEALTH CARE HEROES: SALUTING LOCAL HEALTH CARE WORKERS ON THE FRONTLINES FIGHTING COVID-19
We are grateful to our hometown heroes in a way that perhaps we never have been in our lifetime because we know the blood, sweat and tears that these men and women have shed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that has swept through our country, leaving confusion, uncertainly, and blind fear in its wake. As schools, churches, restaurants, hair salons, gyms, movie theaters, shopping malls and other businesses shut down, those on the frontlines never stopped working. In fact, many put in overtime, both physically and mentally, to ensure the safety of their fellow man.

t the inaugural Dye Junior Invitational golf championship, participants and attendees alike will celebrate both the game of golf and two of its greatest advocates and competitors. The national junior invitational tournament, which will be held at Crooked Stick Golf Club, was put together to honor the Crooked Stick course and the legacy of its founders, Pete and Alice Dye. Chris Wirthwein, tournament media director and Crooked Stick historian, says the idea for the event was originally conceived as a way to celebrate Alice, who passed away in February of 2019, and Pete, who passed away in January. “After Alice passed away, those at the club, and past presidents, said that if there’s any golf club in the world that could and should pay tribute to the Dyes, it’s Crooked Stick,” Wirthwein says. “Pete and Alice were both very accomplished junior golfers and that’s how they got started in the game, so the idea came about for a junior tournament.” Wirthwein says additional inspiration for the tournament came from a desire on the part of club leaders to connect young people more directly to the Dye legacy. “There are young players today who have probably heard the Dye name and played on some courses they designed but maybe don’t have a personal identification,” he says. “It became our dream to help young players, who are going to be the PGA Tour stars of tomorrow, understand how important Pete and Alice Dye are to golf and American golf course design.” Born in Urbana, Ohio, Pete became the 1942 Ohio state high school boys champion, and Alice, an Indianapolis native, won many tournaments in Indiana. The two met at Rollins College after World War II, and, after marrying in 1950, went on to become successful amateur golfers as Pete became an insurance salesman in Indianapolis. atCarmel.com / MAY 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 7
“In their time, amateur golf was a really big deal,” says Wirthwein, who authored a 220-page book on Pete and Alice’s lives and legacy. “Alice told me they were like the Tiger Woods of their day.” During a trip overseas in 1963, when Pete competed in the British Amateur Championship, the couple was able to get an up-close look at the Old Course at St. Andrews, considered the oldest golf course in the world, and were inspired to design a golf club in Indianapolis upon their return. Their vision became Crooked Stick Golf Club. “Pete, Alice and four other guys scouted the land, raised the money, put the club structure together and built it,” Wirthwein says. “They referred to it as their first-born. Pete and Alice lived on the golf course for many, many years, and Pete was Crooked Stick’s first club president as well.” The Dyes went on to design both public and private courses all over the country and the world. Over the years, the 18-hole Crooked Stick course has been the site of many national and world championship competitions including the PGA Championship in 1991, won by John Daly, and the U.S, Women’s Open in 1993, at which Lauri Merten was the victor. More recently, the club hosted the 2012 and 2016 BMW championships. The course is consistently included as one of the top 100 golf courses in the country by “Golfweek” and “Golf Magazine.” The three-day Dye Junior Invitational will be held May 25 through 27. The date is tentative and could change depending on new COVID-19 stay-athome orders or updates. It will consist of practice rounds on the first day, followed by 36 holes on Tuesday and a final, 18-hole round on Wednesday. A total of 33 boys and 33 girls will compete, and all participants will be nationally ranked.
The Dye tournament will involve more than one legacy, as John Daly II, an amateur golfer whose father won the PGA Championship at Crooked Stick nearly 30 years ago with a score of 276, is scheduled to compete. Players and attendees at the event will also have the chance to visit exhibits set up by Crooked Stick leaders containing information about the legacy of Pete and Alice Dye. Wirthwein says the hope of tournament organizers is to continue the Dye Junior Invitational for many years to come.
“What’s special about this invitational is that it’s boys and girls competing in the same tournament at the same time, at the same course,” Wirthwein says. “And that’s very fitting to honor both Pete and Alice and their legacy. There’s nothing else like it. Alice and Pete were around for 90-plus years, and I hope their tournament is around for 90-plus years.” For more details on the 2020 Dye Junior Invitational golf championship, including a full listing of participants ad volunteer info, visit dyejuniorinvitational.com.

Remember the days when the notion of shaking hands with a rock-n-roll star or rubbing elbows with an NBA player made your heart aflutter? Remember the way your children watched superhero movies with their eyes wide and their mouths agape as they sat, mesmerized, at the notion of being able to fly, deflect bullets and neutralize the bad guys? Remember the times you had a random encounter with an A-list Hollywood actress at an airport or a legendary musician while vacationing in an exotic location? We remember such encounters because we, as a society, have elevated Hollywood superstars, sports icons, music legends and fictitious comic book characters as heroes in our minds. It wasn’t until this spring when an insidious, highly contagious disease swiftly and jarringly upended our routines, our lives, our
families and our world that our definition of “hero” was sharply redefined. Suddenly we looked to doctors, nurses, hospital staff, first responders and emergency personnel with fresh eyes of gratitude and a renewed sense of awe as we recognized the grand and personal sacrifices they were making, daily, for the sake of their communities.
This strange and surreal experience has brought many lessons, the greatest of which is that we have heroes living among us. And for that, we are all eternally grateful. Therefore, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank these beautiful people for their ceaseless sacrifice, unwavering commitment to serve and boundless love of humankind.
Donetta Gee-Weiler, RN, MBA-MSN, Hospital Administrator and Chief Nursing Officer for Community Heart and Vascular Hospital has worked for Community Health Network for 25 years and says she’s always known it was a special place. The COVID-19 pandemic has proven that point as teamwork has taken on a new meaning.

“Caregivers are moving from areas that are no longer open to help support areas of greater need,” she says. “This means learning new roles, moving to a new site of care and even changing shifts. During such a time of uncertainty, our team is adjusting to make
sure we continue to deliver the best possible care to those in need.” Nevertheless, this is the field these men and women have chosen, and they feel driven to step up and care for humanity just as they always have. “I view the role of the caregiver as something that cannot be replaced,” says Gee-Weiler, noting that they are welcomed into their patients’ lives during the best moments (e.g., the birth of a baby, cure from disease) and worst moments (e.g., terminal diagnosis, loss of a loved one). “We are part of the family’s story as these memories are some they carry with them for the remainder of their life,” Gee-Weiler adds. “Now I think the community is finally seeing just how much these moments also mean to us. We are showing that health care is truly a career of passion to help others, regardless of the need.” Dr. William Harvey, pulmonary critical care specialist and medical director of the intensive care unit (ICU) at IU Health North Hospital, has been practicing critical care medicine for two decades. As medical director of the ICU, he provides calm reassurance to the nursing staff and communicates with administration to ask for and receive the necessary resources to treat patients.
“I VIEW THE ROLE OF THE CAREGIVER AS SOMETHING THAT CANNOT BE REPLACED.” - DONETTA GEE-WEILER -
“Although there is more stress and longer hours than usual, I feel very blessed that I have been trained to do this job and that I have an opportunity to help our citizens,” says Dr. Harvey, who is thankful to residents for their sacrifices. “We will get through this time. It will not last forever. Fortunately, at IU Health we have the resources, the manpower and the will to respond to this crisis and ultimately defeat the virus.” Dr. Raymond V. Ingham, President & CEO of Witham Health Services has marveled at the courage and fortitude of Witham’s employees. “It is amazing how the employees have all come together to do whatever it takes to help keep our community healthy,” he says. “We have people working in positions they never dreamed of before. atCarmel.com / MAY 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 11
Sports Medicine physicians and staff are doing drive through viral health screenings, clinical nurses from all areas of the hospital are covering the Respiratory Fast Track unit and COVID-19 unit that were put in place. Witham employees are working together, supporting each other to meet the needs of our community.” Just as the community appreciates our hometown heroes, they, too, appreciate the love and support they have received in return. “Their support gives us encouragement to keep going,” says MaryBeth Searles, Director Marketing & Public Relations, Witham Health Services. “We have received donations of hand sanitizer, gloves, N95 masks and more from businesses. Community organizations and individuals have brought in food and snacks, sewed homemade masks, donated flowers and chocolates for employees. Encouraging signs have popped up all around the community supporting health care workers. It’s wonderful how the community is supporting us while we support them with their health care needs.”
IT IS AMAZING HOW THE EMPLOYEES HAVE ALL COME TOGETHER TO DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO HELP KEEP OUR COMMUNITY HEALTHY. - DR. RAYMOND V. INGHAM -
“We have seen the community show up in so many ways by sending loving messages via social media, donating meals to feed our busy teams and planning large drive-by parades to show support,” Gee-Weiler adds. “This is such a difficult time in health care, but it will pass. In the end, my hope is that the community continues to remember how important the caregivers are and that we keep an even stronger bond we have built with one another.” When every day brings a new series of harrowing headlines, it can be easy to slip into sadness or flounder in fear. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel thanks to this army of men and women as they are the heartbeat of hope that now, always has, and always will work tirelessly to relieve pain, save lives and restore health. These individuals dedicate their lives to helping us, as a society, live our best lives. Because, as the saying goes, “When you have your health, you have everything. When you do not have your health, nothing else matters.” Thank you to all our local health care heroes for what you do each day! 12 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atCarmel.com

CLASSIC CAKES LAUNCHES NEW PROGRAM TO SPREAD KINDNESS DURING COVID-19 OUTBREAK Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
Classic Cakes was voted Best Bakery in Carmel in 2020, listed in the top 50 Best Wedding Cake Bakeries in America by the Daily Meal, and has won numerous other accolades for their tasty creations, including Couples’ Choice Award on Wedding Wire and Best Weddings on the Knot. But all of that pales in comparison to the love the bakery has received in light of the pandemic that has threatened the existence of local businesses. When government mandates shut down so many things, suddenly all events were canceled, including birthday parties, weddings, graduations, first communions and corporate functions. “Everything was canceled so all of our orders canceled along with them,” says Megan Ritz, Cake Curator and CEO of Classic Cakes. “People weren’t having parties. And that’s really the reason you get a cake.”
Though it was a scary and uncertain time for small businesses, Classic Cakes immediately implemented several new programs to help share kindness with the community. One such program is called the Cake Fairy that enables customers to send a cake to a friend, family member or coworker. “People have jumped on this and customers are ordering them for 10 different people to spread joy and support us as a business,” Ritz says. There is also Cake it Yourself, an at-home decorating kit plus cake that is delivered to your door. In addition, Ritz began doing Facebook Live videos that include a behind-thescenes tour of the shop as well as various tutorials about how to cover a cake in fondant, how to ice a cake and favorite tools they use in decorating a cake. In a week, they had 60,000 people view the videos. The cake deliveries, which go all over Central Indiana, including Plainfield, Greenwood, Zionsville, Westfield, and Noblesville, are a big hit as well. 14 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atCarmel.com
“To deliver those cakes and hear kids inside screaming, ‘It’s here! It’s here!’ makes me smile,” says Ritz, who has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of community support. In a week’s time, they went from having every order canceled to making 75 cakes. Granted, making an 8-inch cake isn’t the same as a 200-serving wedding cake. “We’re working twice as hard to produce a lot of smaller cakes, but seeing the way the community has rallied around us assures me that we’re going to survive this,” Ritz says. “We have brides paying off their December weddings now because they know we need that income now. We have people buying gift cards to give us some cash right now.” Client Terri Towner had Classic Cakes deliver a birthday cake to her niece when her big celebration was canceled. “My niece was so thrilled when Classic Cakes came to the rescue and helped us make her day special with a personalized, pink icing cake,” Towner says.
Even though people have been stuck at home, they still want to find reasons to celebrate. In fact, Ritz has seen an uptick in elaborate cake design orders. “They figure if they can’t do anything else, they are going to have the best cake to make the occasion special,” says Ritz, noting that they’ve done 3D baby Yoda cakes, 3D unicorn cakes, sushi cakes, and they made a special cake for a couple who had to cancel their trip to Paris. “For them, we made a 3D wine bottle with cheese & crackers and grapes all made out of sugar on top,” Ritz says. Jessica Strickland is a loyal customer who is grateful that Classic Cakes has found a way to bless others during this challenging time. “Their Cake Fairy program helps so many regain the joy and celebrations that have been taken away from them during the quarantine,” Strickland says. “Getting a surprise cake from The Cake Fairy has been one of the sweet highlights of our time at home. Plus, they’ve made their classes available online for free so many people can learn their inside secrets about baking and decorating cakes. They are a shining light during a dark and unnerving time.” Classic Cakes also plans to donate 3,000 cupcakes to the staff at Riley Hospital. Though ingredients have been donated by McFarling Foods and General Mills, the containers and labels will cost between $500-$600 so if you’d like to donate towards this cause, visit the Classic Cakes website. “We’ve never done 3,000 cupcakes before,” Ritz says. “We’re used to 200-person weddings. But we’re up for the challenge if it means lifting the spirit of emergency responders and community support workers.” In recent weeks, Classic Cakes has also donated cakes to the staff at area hospitals, police stations, fire stations and senior living communities.
“We’re trying to do what little we can to give them a moment of joy,” Ritz adds. “Everyone is in the same position right now — looking for ways to connect during this very isolating time. For cake to be the thing that’s helping pull people together is pretty awesome.” To place an order with Classic Cakes or to make a donation, call 317-844-6901 or visit ClassicCakesCarmel.com.

Staying Safe With Smart911 DIGITAL SERVICE PROVIDES EMERGENCY WORKERS WITH EXTRA INFORMATION ON 911 CALLS Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by Smart911
With the global COVID-19 pandemic, communities around the world are working through ways to ensure the public safety of individuals and families. In Hamilton County, one way residents can better equip 9-1-1 and first responders with all the information they need is by creating a free account with the Smart911 national safety profile registry. “Participants can self-identify if they are under quarantine, and whether it is self-imposed or directed by a health professional,” says Jeff Schemmer, executive director of Hamilton County Public Safety Communications. “The Smart911 app also allows quarantined individuals to receive
check-in messages on their health status. Individuals who sign up will receive tailored alerts based on their specific needs and geographic location.” Individuals can create a Smart911 Safety Profile for their household at Smart911. com or on the Smart911 App. The signup process is quick and easy, while also giving first responders crucial information on you and your family that they may not otherwise have. “It acts as a database for the public to provide us information that we can utilize in emergency situations,” Schemmer says. “It can be something as simple as descriptions of their home, how many people live in their house or if they have any family members that have medical conditions.” atCarmel.com / MAY 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 17
In many cases, Schemmer explains that an individual’s phone number may not even tell 9-1-1 responders where exactly they’re calling from. This is where Smart911 comes in handy. “80 to 85% of our 9-1-1 calls are cellular,” Schemmer says. “We have no way to pinpoint a phone, so what they can do is link their home address, or even work address, to their cellphone number.” In signing up for a Smart911 account, Hamilton County residents can also ensure they’re receiving any and all public safety announcements from county officials. “We just also added Rave Alert, which is part of the Smart911 suite,” Schemmer adds. “It allows us to push out notifications to

people. So if there are severe weather warnings, we can push that out. And since it’s done over a cellphone, the likelihood of us reaching people with an emergency notification is better than a tornado siren because people don’t necessarily hear those inside or at night.”

“If you go into your profile, you can add additional notes, and that’s what we would see,” Schemmer says. “It gives us a lot of information we can use, and we only have access to it when you call.” All in all, Schemmer hopes to continue getting the word out about this helpful public safety tool. “We’re gradually increasing [the number of sign-ups], but a lot of it is getting the word out and reminding people about it,” Schemmer says. “It will provide the first responders with more information to better serve the citizens of Hamilton County in an emergency.”

When it comes to what information individuals share with Smart911, Schemmer states it’s ultimately up to the individual. Hamilton County citizens can do as much as sharing a photo of their home, or as little as linking their cellphone number to their home address. Regardless, privacy is always ensured.

It is said that there is a silver lining to every cloud. Denisse Jensen, Executive Director of GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Center, has found a way to benefit many families amidst COVID-19 shutdowns. Days after the Indianapolis facility, located at 5909 East 86th Street, closed it doors, Jensen and volunteers converted in-person programming into Gigi’s-At-Home. Now, lesson plans, videos and student handouts plus real-time activities are available via the internet. Gigi’s Playhouse is a nonprofit organization that has 48 locations across the United States and one in Mexico. The Indianapolis site opened in 2015. Today, it serves more than 500 families in Central Indiana as well as some families who travel from Ohio.
Its educational and therapeutic programs for both children and adults with Down Syndrome, are completely free and are funded entirely through grants, corporation partnerships and donations. “The founder, Nancy Gianni, started the first GiGi’s Playhouse in 2003,” Jensen says. “She named it after her daughter, GiGi, who was born with Down Syndrome. After she was turned away from joining playgroups, Gianni realized that there needed to be a place for families like them.” “Everybody desires to have a place where kids are inspired to be their best self. GiGi’s is a place that fosters inclusion and acceptance. We embrace the whole family and offer support all the way from a prebirth diagnosis through adulthood. We feel that limits can’t be put on someone just because of a diagnosis.” 20 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atCarmel.com
In Indianapolis, GiGi’s Playhouse has a staff of two full-time employees plus one who works part-time. Programing is conducted by dedicated volunteers. When it halted its in-person educational sessions in order to comply with COVID-19 mandates, Jensen had to act quickly. She and volunteers converted many programs to accessible online formats and assembled bags full of supplies and lesson plans. “Families who enrolled in Spring Session Two drove by and picked up the bags,” Jensen says. “Families not enrolled can access the program information on our website, using their own supplies. The response has been so great that other GiGi’s locations throughout the nation started using our online model. We have had thousands of views and have gained hundreds of new families. Now, families in locations without a GiGi’s Playhouse can connect with us.”
The development of free online content has removed barriers for participation since it can be accessed whether a family lives in a rural setting or inside a city. Early learners enjoy LMNOP class which is filled with music and teaches sign language. Several programs, which include Touch Math, cooking and art, are available for school-age and teen participants. For adults, there are exercise classes and a volunteer tutorial of making toys for the Humane Society. “When we made the Gigi-At-Home bags, it depleted our supplies, but what good would they have done just sitting there not being used? That’s why our August 29 fundraiser, 3.21 Run in Noblesville’s Forest Park will be critical this year,” Jensen says. “It’s a fun afternoon for family and friends but it is the fundraiser that pays for all our program expenses. “GiGi’s at home is keeping our families purposeful during this difficult time. I’m so proud that we can continue being a part of their lives,” she adds. GiGi’s Playhouse is located at 5909 East 86th Street. Call 317-288-8235 or visit gigisplayhouse.org/indianapolis for more information.
